In a Stanley cup daze? Woman wheels $2,500 in cups out of store without paying, police say

    [ad_1]

Stanley cup mania landed one Sacramento woman in handcuffs last week after she wheeled a shopping cart full of the reusable water bottles out of a store without paying, authorities said.

On Jan. 17, Roseville police responded to a shoplifting call north of Sacramento in the 6000 block of Stanford Ranch Road.

Retail workers reported seeing the suspect leave with dozens of Stanley cups in her cart. She ignored their calls to stop and stuffed the merchandise into her car before leaving, police said.

Officers stopped the woman just as she pulled onto a local highway.

Police say a woman filled her car with Stanley water bottles, ignoring employees’ calls for her to stop.

    (Roseville Police Department)

After searching her car, 65 Stanley cups worth about $2,500 were recovered, according to police. The woman, who hasn’t been identified, was arrested on suspicion of grand theft.

Fueled by influencers, the craze over the Stanley bottles, which are popular for keeping drinks chilled for hours, has led to fights and shouting matches as exclusive colors and collaborations fly off the shelves.

Retailers on eBay are currently selling a coveted pink Starbucks Stanley cup for as much as $5,000.

Law enforcement agencies have warned consumers to be on the lookout for scams related to counterfeit cups and credit card theft.

Roseville police cautioned against trying to cash in on the craze by way of retail theft.

“While Stanley Quenchers are all the rage,” the police department wrote on Facebook, “we strongly advise against turning to crime to fulfill your hydration habits.”

Pacoima pedestrian dies after being struck by 3 cars. None of them stopped

    [ad_1]

Police are searching for the drivers of three vehicles who failed to stop after striking — one after another — a pedestrian in Pacoima late Friday night.

At around 11:45 p.m., a man was crossing mid-block on San Fernando Road south of Montague Street in the San Fernando Valley community when he was struck by a wrong-way driver, the Los Angeles Police Department said. The light-colored pickup truck was traveling northbound in southbound lanes.

The man, described as Latino and in his late 20s or early 30s, fell to the ground and was trying to get back up when he was hit by a second car, a light-colored full-size SUV, in the northbound lane.

“The force of the second collision threw the pedestrian onto southbound lanes, where he was run over by a third vehicle,” the LAPD said in a news release. That car was described as a dark-colored midsize SUV.

All three drivers failed to stop, render aid and remain at the scene, which is required by law, police said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending identification and notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

As of Sunday evening, no suspects had been taken into custody, according to LAPD Officer Tony Im, and the drivers remained at large.

The city is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of the drivers. The LAPD is asking anyone with information to contact the department’s Valley Traffic Division at (818) 644-8022.

  • Hertz to Sell 20K EVs from U.S. Fleet, Replace with Gas-Powered Cars

Hertz to Sell 20K EVs from U.S. Fleet, Replace with Gas-Powered Cars

    [ad_1]

After leading the car rental industry with purchases of
electric vehicles, and partnerships to develop charging stations, Hertz has
decided to sell about 20,000 EVs from its U.S. fleet and use part of the
proceeds to replace them with gas-powered vehicles “to meet customer
demand,” according to a Thursday U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission
filing. The sell-off represents approximately one-third of its EV fleet
    globally.

Hertz cited higher expenses related to collision and damage as
one motivation for the move. During an October third-quarter earnings call,
Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr noted that the company was “continuing to take
steps to rectify the issue of elevated EV damage costs broadly,” and that
“collision and damage repairs on an EV can often run about twice that
associated with a comparable combustion engine vehicle.”

During the same call, Scherr also said that during the third
quarter the company made productivity gains across most categories of its
direct vehicle and operating expenses—with the exception for vehicle damage
costs, “particularly those on our EVs, which we are addressing in a very
    targeted way.”

    Scherr on a second-quarter
    2023 earnings call
noted that corporate customers were strong candidates
for EV usage as they “want to satisfy their own carbon-footprint
objectives, so they are compelling employees to get into EVs.” He added
that EVs earn a premium of between $30 to $35 in excess of comparable average
    rates.

    Hertz expects a fourth-quarter 2023 incremental net
depreciation expense related to the sale of approximately $245 million,
according to the SEC filing. Further, the company anticipates this action will
better balance supply against expected demand of EVs.

The company plans to continue to execute its strategy around
EVs “and offer customers a wide selection of vehicles.” Hertz also
will continue to expand EV charging infrastructure, grow relations with EV
manufacturers, and continue to implement policies and educations tools “to
help enhance the EV experience for customers.”

Vehicle sales were initiated in December 2023 and are
expected to continue through 2024, according to the company.

Hertz in September 2022 announced plans
to purchase up to 175,000 GM EVs
over the next five years. The company also
    made Tesla
    and Polestar
    EV purchases. In addition, BP
last February announced a $1 billion investment
    to install EV charging
stations across the United States to help Hertz meet EV rental demand.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for
    comment.

Footage newly released by the Los Angeles Police Department shows how a police cruiser fatally struck 26-year-old Luis Espinoza in Watts in the gathering twilight on Dec. 8.

According to the department, the incident occurred on East Century Boulevard around 5 p.m. City fire paramedics transported Espinoza to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Footage from stationary cameras facing East Century Boulevard shows the police SUV rapidly traveling eastbound on the street with its emergency lights flashing. A slow-motion rendition of the video shows a blurred image of Espinoza running across the street about 75 feet away west of the light at McKinley Avenue, which was green for the cruiser.

There, the cruiser struck Espinoza so violently that his body flew and tumbled into the intersection, crossing the junction and rolling at least 50 more feet, the slow-motion footage shows.

On an audio recording released by the department, a female officer can be heard calling for help after the collision. Another video from a stationary camera shows an officer attending to Espinoza about a minute after the collision, appearing to administer chest compressions.

Police have not released the name of the officer driving the cruiser. According to sources familiar with the investigation, the officer was part of the department’s community safety partnership bureau, which seeks to improve relationships between police and the communities they serve across the city. At the time of the collision, they said, she was running an errand for a member of a youth sports team affiliated with the department.

The 7-plus-minute video released by the LAPD is a combination of dashboard camera footage and clips from stationary locations.

A department spokesperson would not confirm the source of the non-dashboard footage and said there was no further information involving the investigation.

LAPD Capt. Kelly Muniz said in a community briefing Sunday that the investigation into the incident was handled by the department’s multidisciplinary collision investigation team.

She said that the investigation was “still in the early stages” and that a resolution may not happen for months. However, she said the case has been “presented to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office for filing consideration.”

“We also do not draw any conclusions about whether the officers acted consistent with our policies in the law until all the facts are known and the investigation is complete,” she said.

Last month, LAPD Chief Michel Moore said he had “very serious concerns regarding the officer’s driving leading up to the collision.” He also said a separate internal affairs investigation was being conducted.

    [ad_1]

A 63-year-old woman died Tuesday after an Amtrak train struck her vehicle in Camarillo.

The incident was reported just after 10:35 a.m. at the railroad crossing near the intersection of Upland and Somis roads.

An Amtrak Surfliner headed northbound crashed into a four-door passenger vehicle with one female occupant, the Ventura County Fire Department said.

The vehicle had been traveling west on Upland Road when it stopped on the railroad tracks, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Tuesday.

The engineer saw the vehicle and applied the emergency brakes but was not able to stop the train.

The locomotive struck the vehicle, pushing it into the crossing arm control box, authorities said.

The woman was pulled from the vehicle in critical condition and flown by helicopter to a trauma center, where she later died. Her name has not been released.

Video posted to X, formerly Twitter, by the Fire Department showed the crumpled remains of the vehicle lying near the stopped train.

The collision did not cause the train to derail, and no injuries were reported on board. The crash remains under investigation.

Father and son arrested after 10-year-old shoots another boy with stolen gun, police say

    [ad_1]

A 53-year-old man and his 10-year-old son were arrested Saturday in Sacramento County after the boy fatally shot another child using a stolen gun he had found in his dad’s car, law enforcement officials said.

Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a shooting in the 4700 block of Greenholm Drive in Foothill Farms, an unincorporated community about 20 minutes outside downtown Sacramento, just after 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Deputies found a 10-year-old boy who was unresponsive lying in the middle of a parking lot bleeding from his head and neck. The boy, whom police did not publicly identify, later died at a hospital, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses identified those involved in the shooting and directed deputies to a nearby apartment, where they found Arkete Davis and two children, one of whom was his son.

Authorities said the boy, whom they did not identify by name, had grabbed the gun from his dad’s car while he was retrieving his father’s cigarettes from the vehicle. The boy had “bragged that his father had a gun” before he shot the other child, the sheriff’s office wrote in a news release. It is not clear whether the two children knew each other.

Detectives found a firearm that had been reported stolen in 2017 in a nearby trashcan where authorities allege Davis attempted to dispose of it. The boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility, authorities said.

Davis was arrested on suspicion of carrying a stolen loaded firearm in a vehicle, endangering the life of a child, illegally possessing a firearm as a felon, accessory after the fact and criminal storage of a firearm, all felonies, according to law enforcement and jail records. He is being held on $500,000 bail and is expected to appear in court Wednesday, according to jail records.

Suspect in killing of 27-year-old Lancaster-area teacher arrested

    [ad_1]

Los Angeles County sheriff‘s deputies have arrested a 37-year-old man suspected of murder after a woman’s body was found this week stuffed inside the trunk of a car at his home and set on fire.

Veronica Aguilar, 27, had been living in a home owned by the suspect, Matthew Switalski, in the Quartz Hill neighborhood near Lancaster. The UCLA graduate taught at a nearby elementary school and was beloved by the families she worked with and her friends.

Aguilar’s body was found by Los Angeles County firefighters responding to a garage fire Wednesday.

“Her story is all over the news of her brutal death,” her brother Juan Aguilar wrote on a GoFundMe page meant to raise money for a funeral. “Things will never be the same ever again. We miss her so much. She had the best spirit she always had a smile. My family is heartbroken.”

“She was the sweetest teacher in the world,” one parent of a student wrote on the website. “We were blessed to have her in our lives. My daughter loved her so much.”

Switalski is a former Northrop Grumman employee, and KABC-TV reported that he worked at the defense company until May. He was, according to LinkedIn, a program, cost and schedule controller and had worked for the company since 2010.

In the spring, court records show, Switalski was arrested and charged with several counts of rape and sexual misconduct with a romantic partner. After being arraigned in June, he was released on $600,000 bail, according to court records.

After the fire was extinguished at the Quartz Hill home Wednesday morning, authorities quickly identified Switalski as a suspect. Crews had searched the garage and discovered the woman’s body inside the trunk of the car.

He was arrested Thursday in Kern County, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He’s being held at the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station on a $10-million bond and has been charged with a felony, according to the department’s inmate locator.

  • It's not a drive-thru, but a motorist still plowed through a smoke shop in Fullerton

It's not a drive-thru, but a motorist still plowed through a smoke shop in Fullerton

    [ad_1]

Surveillance video caught a driver crash straight through a smoke shop in Fullerton on Wednesday morning in an accident that police say was due to the motorist driving under the influence.

About 3 a.m., a white Mercedes-Benz pulled into the parking lot in front of Cobra Smoke Shop & Vape Store on Euclid Street. The driver seems to lose control of the vehicle as it accelerates into the glass storefront, through the store, and out the back, according to the video footage. Two individuals — the owner in the back of the store and a part-time worker at the cashier — were in the store at the time of the incident but were not injured, according to Fullerton police.

“In the video, you can see it seemed like she stopped and then she put her hands up and then the car just accelerated,” Seja Karim, 22, the manager of the family-owned smoke shop, said when describing the footage shot by a closed-circuit security camera. “I think she hit the gas instead of the brake and ran into the whole store.”

The owner came out from the back of the store, thinking the car crash was part of a robbery scheme and someone from the car would start stealing inventory, Karim said.

Fullerton police identified the sole occupant of the car as a 22-year-old woman from Santa Ana. Sgt. Ryan O’Neil, a Fullerton Police spokesperson, said the woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and taken to the Fullerton Police Department, where she was cited and released.

“The message we want to send is that during the holiday times, be safe and make good decisions when you go out drinking,” O’Neil said. “Line up a sober ride so you can get home safe to your family.”

As one of the few smoke shops in the area open 24/7, the shop is popular among customers even around midnight, Karim said. She said it was fortunate that no customers were in the store at the time of the car crash.

“Around that time, it gets pretty crowded, but thankfully, there was no one here at this store,” she said.

The car cleared the shelving cases but plowed into the “cigar room” where the shop keeps all of its cigars, some of which sell for $80 each, and a humidifier used to maintain a certain humidity level in the room. Karim estimates the loss to be over $100,000 from the cigar room alone.

Before workers had the chance to fix the gaping hole in the storefront, customers trickled into the smoke shop that same morning, stepping into the open-faced store to get their nicotine fix.

“We never closed,” she said. “We just cleaned up the area and got right back to business.”

  • Buying your first car in Canada: Insider tips from a salesperson – MoneySense

Buying your first car in Canada: Insider tips from a salesperson – MoneySense

    [ad_1]

Can you negotiate interest rates on car loans?

If a car is in stock, and you have a good credit score, you might be able to negotiate a good interest rate for your loan—the salesperson may be more willing to make a deal to sell a car already on the lot. On the other hand, dealerships can also mark up the prices of cars, and buyers may be willing to pay more for the convenience of getting one sooner. Doing your research is the only way to know if you’re paying a fair price.

Pay off your car loan faster

Whenever you come into extra money, such as birthday gifts or work bonuses, consider paying off your car faster. Many car loans are open loans, allowing you to make additional payments or settle the loan in full anytime without penalties or fees. (Confirm with your lender.)

Common car sales tactics to watch for

    Upselling

The salesperson might attempt to upsell you on additional features and accessories. If you’re financing or leasing the car, they’ll likely focus on the monthly or bi-weekly payment increase rather than the total cost. They might say, for example, that adding features X and Y will increase your bi-weekly payment by just $15—about the cost of a Big Mac combo. (I’ve used this line myself, and yes, it worked.) Doesn’t sound like much, right? But consider whether the upgrade will fit your budget. Let’s say you’re fully financing a $30,000 vehicle in Ontario. The cost with 13% HST would be $3,390. If you signed a six-year loan with an interest rate of 7.48% and made bi-weekly payments, the total interest would be $8,222.21. If you added a feature or an upgrade that cost another $15 per bi-weekly payment, that would add $2,340 to the cost of the car, plus $641.33 in interest over the life of the loan.

    Skip the unwanted add-ons

Evaluate the necessity of extra offerings like extended warranties or upgrades, especially if you have a strict budget. Request an itemized list of all charges and look for unexpected costs.

    “Good cop, bad cop”

While many salespeople are genuinely helpful, informative and valuable in the car-buying process, that doesn’t mean they won’t use psychological tactics to persuade you to buy. During test drives, I’d tell customers a little bit about the car and then focus on personal lifestyle questions that I could bring up later in the sales pitch. For example, if I found out that they commuted to work, I’d say something like “If you’re here, that means you don’t want to spend hours a day taking the bus to work and back, right? Let’s work together and write a deal today.”

Sales tactics might involve a coordinated strategy. For example, when negotiating with a customer, my sales manager and I employed a “good cop, bad cop” tactic where he would assume an aggressive attitude, while I had an understanding, sympathetic demeanour. My goal was to build rapport and gain the person’s trust, in contrast to my manager’s near-hostility. This was a technique I was taught by someone with more than 20 years of industry experience—and most of the time, it worked.

    Don’t bend under pressure

A salesperson might try to rush or pressure you into buying. This may be amplified if car inventory is low, but stand your ground and remain calm.

What can you negotiate besides price?

As part of your deal, you can ask about perks you want, such as complimentary oil changes for a year, car accessories, winter tires, window tints or all-weather floor mats. But if you want to attempt this, research the costs of these add-ons before you visit the dealership. (Read further tips on planning for a financial negotiation.)

    Get it in writing

If a salesperson makes generous offers like free oil changes or extended warranties, get them in writing. Documenting all promises can help avoid misunderstandings.

It may be hard to trust your instincts during negotiations, as emotions and high-pressure sales tactics can cloud your judgment. However, thorough preparation can help you tell if a deal is too good to be true—or not good at all. Don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion. Above all, stay calm and confident, and be willing to walk away if you’re not comfortable with the terms of the deal.

Key questions to ask before signing a car deal

    • What is the final out-the-door price, including all fees and charges?
    • Are there additional warranties or protection plans added to the deal? Can I opt out?
    • Can I see a breakdown of the financing terms and monthly payments?
    • Are there prepayment penalties if I decide to pay off the loan early?
    • Can I review all the documents and contracts before signing?

    Check for hidden fees

Look for hidden or tacked-on fees not previously discussed during negotiations, such as excessively high administrative charges. Carefully review all documents, question unfamiliar charges, and don’t hesitate to call off the deal if you’re uneasy.

The best first car to buy

Buying your first car in Canada is an exciting milestone. By following these insider tips and navigating the car market with caution, you can make informed decisions and find the best first car to buy for your needs, preferences and budget.

If you have a particular car in mind and you’re not in a hurry, it’s worth thinking ahead by up to a year, if not more. And if you’re open to variations in colour, model or trim, this flexibility can work to your advantage.

Ferrari believed to be registered to actor Michael B. Jordan involved in collision in Hollywood

    [ad_1]

Last summer, “Creed” and “Black Panther” star Michael B. Jordan posted a video on Instagram showing him testing out a Ferrari 296 GTB at a racetrack. Jordan can be seen enjoying the rush of taking the car through tight turns at high speeds.

Now the actor and Los Angeles resident will probably be in the market for a new luxury sports car after a similar Italian vehicle linked to him was involved in a collision Saturday night in Hollywood.

Los Angeles police declined to say who was part of the crash, confirming only that there was an incident about 11:30 p.m. at Sunset Boulevard and North Beachwood Drive. No one was arrested after the incident.

Several news outlets showed video of a light blue Ferrari 812 Superfast with one of its wheels and side bumpers sheared off. The video also showed a nearby Kia Niro SUV that was badly damaged. Car & Driver reports the Ferrari goes for nearly $430,000.

KABC7-TV, citing DMV records, reported that the vehicle was registered to Jordan— though it was not known if he was driving it. TMZ reported Jordan was at the crash scene.

Representatives for the actor didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

  • Teen found dead 49 years ago in O.C. identified as alleged victim of ‘Scorecard Killer’

Teen found dead 49 years ago in O.C. identified as alleged victim of ‘Scorecard Killer’

    [ad_1]

After nearly half a century, authorities have identified the remains of a man who is believed to have been killed by Randy Kraft, California’s notorious “Scorecard Killer” who targeted young men in the 1970s and ‘80s.

Michael Ray Schlicht, who died when he was 17 in 1974, was identified Tuesday by investigators with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department using investigative genetic genealogy.

The Iowa native was found dead on Sept. 14, 1974, on the side of a trail in what is now Aliso Viejo. He had been dead for three to five days, according to authorities, and died of alcohol and diazepam intoxication. His death was initially determined to be accidental.

Michael Ray Schlicht, a John Doe homicide victim in 1974, was identified through investigative genetic genealogy.

    (Orange County Sheriff’s Department)

Homicide investigators with the Sheriff’s Department realized in 1980 that there were other young men who had died of the same intoxication, and those deaths were classified as homicides, the department said.

“Over the years, multiple young men were found deceased throughout Orange County and Southern California, including several within a few miles of where [Schlicht’s] remains were discovered,” the department said in a news release.

It was not until 1983 when two California Highway Patrol officers pulled over Kraft, a 38-year-old computer technician from Long Beach, and discovered a dead Marine in the front seat that authorities began to piece together the homicides. Kraft’s deadly trail took investigators to Oregon and Michigan, and numerous bodies were also found in Orange County.

The officers discovered photos of other young male victims, apparently dead, under the floor mat of the car. Kraft was convicted of 16 murders in 1989, though he is suspected in dozens more. Eight of the men he killed had diazepam — commonly known as Valium — in their system, like Schlicht, prosecutors said.

Kraft’s nickname came from the list police found in the back of his car. It was a list of “notations” that prosecutors at Kraft’s trial said was a “death list,” showing each person he had killed. Prosecutors dubbed him the “Scorecard Killer.”

Kraft, 78, is still being held on death row at San Quentin State Prison.

After 49 years of not knowing Schlicht’s identity, Sheriff’s Department investigators said they were able to generate a DNA profile for their John Doe victim by submitting tissue samples to a forensic biotechnology company.

Once they had the profile, sheriff’s investigators uploaded the DNA to a “law enforcement-approved genealogy database” and began building a family tree of the victim.

After months of researching, investigators connected the man’s DNA to people believed to be his grandparents. When they contacted a granddaughter of the potential grandparents, the woman told investigators she had not seen her brother since 1974 — the year the man was killed.

Close to their answer, investigators then received a DNA sample from a woman they believed to be their victim’s mother. It was a match and they were able to identify the dead 17-year-old as Schlicht.

A relative of Schlicht declined to comment to The Times on his identification.

The added storage of the front-mounted “frunk” is a key draw, along with a strong technology and safety package. The Mach-E has tempted many electric-curious shoppers to buy their first electric car.

In today’s used market, shoppers can expect to find plenty of selection for lightly used EVs, with many vehicles offering winter-ready all-wheel drive (AWD) and priced around $50,000. With many Canadian shoppers considering AWD a mandatory feature these days, a used Ford Mustang Mach-E puts a persuasive AWD-equipped pick into the same pricing ballpark as a brand-new front-drive competitor.

With an eight-year factory battery warranty, available Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) perks and virtually no ongoing maintenance, a used Mustang Mach-E gives shoppers a strong taste of modern electric motoring without the waiting lists and pre-delivery inspection (PDI) charges. (For more recommendations for pre-owned vehicles, read my picks for the best used cars in Canada.)

    Fun fact

The Mustang Mach-E is available with BlueCruise, a hands-free driver support system that enables extended periods of hands-free driving on pre-qualified divided highways. When entering a compatible stretch of highway (called a Blue Zone), drivers can engage BlueCruise with a click and experience hands-free driving while they keep their eyes on the road.

Best EV at the Canadian Car of the Year awards

There’s a more important reason for calling the Mach-E a top pick for a used EV: it’s an award-winner when it comes to the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s 2022 Canadian Car of the Year testing data. When the Mach-E was originally tested by this panel of Canadian experts, it took the top score in the category, leaving both the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV trailing behind by a considerable margin.

After dozens of judges submitted their scores, the Ford Mustang Mach-E came away with top marks virtually across the board—including for cargo, refinement, throttle response, ride comfort and features. This impressive showing in its first year of testing strongly indicates that Ford got the Mustang Mach-E just right, right out of the gate.

How much interior space will the VW ID. Buzz have?

The real reason the ID. Buzz is on our list as the best EV for space and size comes down to the numbers. When space matters, this one’s going to be hard to beat. The VW ID. Ford F-150 Lightning: The best electric pickup truck in Canada for 2024 – MoneySense

    [ad_1]

With various battery and motor combinations targeting a range of shoppers after a tech-savvy and fuel-free pickup truck experience, the F-150 Lightning comes packed with the latest in connectivity, safety and convenience tech—not to mention fully digital instrumentation, standard 4×4 and available range of over 480 kilometres.

Is the Ford F-150 Lightning a good truck?

Yes, and it’s every bit as tough and hardworking as other F-150s. All models get 775 lb.-ft of torque, with up to 563 horsepower available. The F-150 Lightning supports both AC and DC fast-charging. With a 150-kW DC fast charger, it can charge from 15% to 80% in about 41 minutes, though most owners simply recharge overnight in their parking spaces or driveways. A 15.5-inch touchscreen display doubles as a high-resolution backup camera, too.

With its spacious cabin, functional box with power outlets, and a unique “frunk,” the F-150 Lightning makes camping a breeze in several ways. First, the frunk provides a secondary large storage area that’s covered, lockable and weather-sealed. With no need for an engine, cooling system or transmission, the Lightning’s engineers repurposed the area for functional storage—complete with an easy-to-clean surface, built-in lighting and numerous high-output power outlets.

With rugged 4×4 traction and pickup construction, the F-150 Lightning is tough enough to access even remote camping locations, packing plenty of space, functionality and exportable power along for the trip. Few EVs on the road today are as handy for active families and outdoor enthusiasts, making this pickup truck an easy pick for our best EV for camping. Best of all, Ford F-150 Lightning owners are fully backed up by the support of the Ford dealer network, coast to coast.

    Fun fact

The F-150 Lightning can provide electricity to your home during a power outage—think of it as a big four-wheel-drive power bank. It’s great for powering tools and gear at work sites and camp sites, too. When camping, some Lightning drivers rent an RV site with a power outlet, so they can recharge their truck.

What is the price of the Ford F-150 Lightning in Canada?

The cost of the F-150 Lightning starts at $59,995. Ford has four models to choose from—the most expensive one starts at $117,395. (Beyond your budget? See our other picks for the best EVs in Canada, including the best affordable EV.)

Here’s what the F-150 Lightning does to your electricity (and fuel) bill

How much can you save on gas by switching to an electric pickup truck?

Suppose you currently drive a Ford F-150 with a 5-litre V8 engine and four-wheel drive. In this configuration, based on Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) fuel economy ratings, your truck uses about 13 litres of gas to drive 100 kilometres on average at room temperature. Assuming fuel costs $1.55 per litre, driving 100 kilometres in this truck costs you about $20. If you drive 22,000 kilometres per year, that’s an annual fuel cost of about $4,430, or approximately $370 per month.

To drive the same 100 kilometres in an F-150 Lightning at room temperature, you’ll need about 29 kWh of electricity. Using the off-peak charging rates in Sudbury, Ont., where I live (7.4 cents per kWh), driving 100 kilometres in the F-150 Lightning costs about $2.21. That’s a fuel cost of about $485 per year (about $40 per month), assuming you charge exclusively at home during off-peak hours.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD: The best EV in Canada for access to charging stations in 2024 – MoneySense

    [ad_1]

With the highest driving range among vehicles in our list of top EVs—576 kilometres—the Model 3 is road-trip ready, even in the dead of an icy winter. Tesla’s charging network adds even further confidence on long-distance voyages, with generous availability even along more remote routes, and charging stations with numerous plugs to reduce the likelihood of wait times or broken equipment.

What is the price of the Tesla Model 3 Long Range in Canada?

The Tesla Model 3 Long Range price in Canada manages to come in under $60,000 after government EV incentives, with a $64,990 starting price that undercuts the incentive cut-off by 10 bucks. Dollar for dollar, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range matches our other “range-for-the-buck” value leader, the Hyundai Ioniq 6, delivering a 12% increase in total range for an equal 12% increase in price. (Read about the Ioniq 6 and our other picks for the best EVs in Canada.)

    Fun fact

The fuss-free charging experience adds confidence on the move, and the Model 3’s state-of-the-art safety features add confidence all around. With top marks in testing by both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Model 3 is among the very safest cars on the road today.

    Tesla’s charging network in Canada

Access to Tesla’s charging network is included, and it’s the best in the business. According to Electric Autonomy Canada, a news site focused on EVs, Tesla operated nearly 1,500 fast-charging stations and 2,100 level 2 charging stations in Canada as of November 2022. CNN has reported that figure outnumbers the CCS chargers used by other automakers two to one. As of this writing, no less than a dozen other automakers have announced plans to switch to Tesla’s NACS-style charging connection as soon as 2024, enabling access to Tesla’s charging network in the process.

Best of all, the Model 3 can pre-condition its battery for even faster top-offs at a supercharger stop, saving you time. All of that with no cards, accounts or sign-ins—just drive up, plug in and drive away.

Tesla’s interfaces, charging experience and remote vehicle apps give owners access to a cutting-edge experience fitting of a modern and connected car, alongside a seamless and straightforward charging experience. This makes it a top choice as an EV that delivers the experience EV drivers want.

Body of Long Beach woman found in car submerged in Irvine lake

    [ad_1]

Authorities in Orange County are investigating the death of a woman whose car plunged into a manmade lake in Irvine on Thanksgiving Day.

Irvine police and firefighters responded about 10 p.m. Thursday to reports of a vehicle driving into the lake south of Irvine Center Drive, where West Yale Loop and East Yale Loop meet, according to the Irvine Police Department.

A witness told authorities that the female driver was traveling south on Yale Loop when her car, a silver Mercedes four-door sedan, continued over the curb and into the lake.

Fire officials found the car submerged about 30 yards from the water’s edge.

“The water was thick and murky so it took some time to locate the car,” said Capt. Thanh Nguyen, of the Orange County Fire Authority. Two swift-water rescue teams, as well as rescue trucks and several helicopters were dispatched to assist with the search and removal of the body, he said.

The woman, who was alone, was recovered from inside the car and pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. She was identified as Camilla Megan Mendoza, 30, of Long Beach.

Irvine police are investigating the cause of the crash. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Det. Christopher Ostrowski at (949) 724-7047 or email costrowski@cityofirvine.org.
