    A convicted drug trafficker linked to the Sinaloa cartel who worked for the son of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was gunned down Thursday morning in an industrial stretch of Willowbrook, according to authorities and court records.

    Eduardo Escobedo, 39, was one of two men killed in the 14200 block of Towne Avenue, according to officials from the Los Angeles Medical Examiner-Coroner and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The other victim was Guillermo De Los Angeles Jr., 47.

    Around 8 a.m. Thursday, sheriff’s deputies responded to an industrial area filled with warehouses, including a truck yard, pallet storage facility and a church. Escobedo and De Los Angeles died at the scene. A third man was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

    “It appears that there was some type of gathering or party at the location from last night to early this morning,” Lt. Omar Camacho told KABC-TV Channel 7 at the scene.

    Escobedo, whose nickname, “El Mago,” translates to “The Magician,” served four years and nine months in federal prison for conspiring to distribute more than 10,000 kilograms of marijuana and laundering drug proceeds. He was released in 2018.

    Raised in East Los Angeles, Escobedo rose to become the primary distributor of marijuana in Los Angeles for Guzman’s oldest son, Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar, a prosecutor said at a 2014 detention hearing. He laundered the proceeds in part by buying exotic cars and shipping them to Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa and the cartel’s stronghold.

    Escobedo was also alleged to have ordered the death of a rival trafficker who was gunned down in his Bentley on the 101 Freeway in 2008. While Escobedo was never charged in the murder, his brother and another man were convicted and are serving life sentences.

    Escobedo was born in the United States, his lawyer, Guadalupe Valencia, said at the detention hearing. He attended Garfield High School, where he met his wife, and later graduated from a continuation school, Valencia said.

    In July 2011, Escobedo, then 27, was arrested leaving a stash house where police found a ton of marijuana, Adam Braverman, an assistant U.S. attorney, said at the detention hearing. Torrance police, which served the warrant, said the stash house was in the West Adams neighborhood.

    In October 2013, Escobedo was caught on a wiretap speaking with Guzman Salazar about smuggling more than five tons of marijuana through a tunnel under the U.S.-Mexico border, Braverman said. Authorities seized 2.7 tons of cannabis from a courier working for Escobedo, according to the prosecutor.

    Guzman Salazar remains one of Mexico’s most wanted men. One of his top lieutenants, Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, nicknamed “El Nini,” was captured by the Mexican National Guard earlier this week in Culiacan. Justice Department officials are seeking to extradite Pérez Salas, who is charged in two U.S. jurisdictions with conspiring to traffic methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine; laundering money; retaliating against witnesses; and possessing machine guns.

    Escobedo was also helping Guzman Salazar launder money through the purchase of sports cars that were shipped to Culiacan, Braverman said. Federal agents determined that Escobedo used a false name to buy two Lamborghinis from a dealership in Newport Beach.

    Braverman said Escobedo was stopped by the Irwindale police driving one of the cars, a $175,000-dollar Murcielago. The Lamborghini was purchased with a series of cash deposits just beneath the $10,000 threshold that triggers a bank reporting requirement, according to a warrant for the car’s seizure.

    Agents listened on a wiretap as Guzman Salazar asked Escobedo to purchase a Nissan GTR and make $50,000 in modifications, Braverman said. Mexican authorities seized the Nissan in Culiacan in 2014, as well as a McLaren that Escobedo had bought in California for $175,000, the prosecutor said.

    At the time of his arrest in 2014, Escobedo was living in a sprawling Granada Hills home with a pool and tennis court. Drug Enforcement Administration agents searched Escobedo and found him carrying a large amount of cash, four phones and keys to five different cars.

    A father of four, Escobedo claimed his annual income of about $200,000 came from a business he owned with his wife, International Hair Authority, that imported hair extensions and sold them. Escobedo also reported owning a record label, Magic Records Corporation.

    Braverman said agents suspected Escobedo was using the hair company’s accounts to launder drug money, pointing to a $50,000 wire transfer from a man named Harvinder Singh. Scotland Yard, the London police force, arrested Singh and his associates, who were shipping cocaine from Mexico to London on British Airways flights, Braverman said.

    After pleading guilty to conspiring to distribute marijuana and launder money, Escobedo was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison.

    He was never charged in a murder that sent his younger brother to prison.

    In 2008, police found a bullet-riddled silver Bentley Continental GT crashed on the center median of the 101 freeway in downtown Los Angeles. Jose Luis Macias, 25, was slumped behind the wheel. A bullet had gone through the back of his head.

    Nicknamed “Huerito,” Macias worked for the Arellano Felix organization, a Tijuana-based cartel that rivals the Sinaloans. Macias’ friends often got into fights with Escobedo’s brother, Andy Medrano, at a Pico Rivera nightclub called El Rodeo, according to an appellate decision that summarized the evidence in Medrano’s trial.

    In the early morning hours of Dec. 12, 2008, Macias was at a festival for the Virgin of Guadalupe on Olvera Street when he got into a fight with Medrano and a friend, Michael Aleman, a witness testified. Security guards broke it up.

    Macias was waiting at a red light in his Bentley when two men approached the car on foot, a witness testified. The witness, a stranded motorist waiting for a tow truck, saw muzzle flashes erupt in quick succession, as if from automatic weapons. The Bentley made a U-turn and sped toward the freeway.

    Police suspected Escobedo had ordered the killing. According to a search warrant affidavit reported by The Times in 2009, detectives believed he and Macias were engaged in “a power struggle” over control of trafficking networks.

    At the 2014 detention hearing in federal court, Braverman said Los Angeles detectives suspected Escobedo “ordered the homicide to occur.”

    “Our understanding is that individual was a rival drug trafficker driving in that Bentley,” he said.

    Detectives arrested Escobedo in 2011 and questioned him about the homicide before letting him go. Valencia, his attorney, said Escobedo was subpoenaed to testify, but was told by a prosecutor he wasn’t being called as a witness in the trial. His brother and Aleman were convicted of Macias’ murder and sentenced to life terms.

    After his release from federal prison in 2018, Escobedo opened a chain of restaurants and food trucks called Benihibachi, according to a motion his lawyer submitted to terminate his probation early. The motion included a photograph of Escobedo wearing a shirt with the restaurant’s logo, chopping a tub full of onions.

    His attorney, Ezekiel Cortez, urged the judge to see the good Escobedo had done after leaving prison. “As a society, you recognize that they listened. You recognize people who turned their lives around,” Cortez said at a hearing. “You recognize people who cut their ties, as in this case, with former very bad associations.”

    “Mr. Escobedo proved to the whole word that he cut his ties completely,” Cortez said. “And he acquired some risks.”

    Calling Escobedo “an enormous success,” U.S. District Judge Dana M. Sabraw agreed to terminate his probation early. “Free from these influences,” Sabraw said of Escobedo’s ties to drug traffickers, “you are a very productive, wonderful human being.”

    Still, Escobedo flaunted his opulent lifestyle on social media in recent years. He posed for photographs with Floyd Mayweather and Al Pacino. He wore flashy tracksuits by Dolce and Gabbana and sported a diamond-encrusted Richard Mille watch. One photograph showed Escobedo holding a duffel bag full of money. In another, he embraces a member of the Mexican Mafia while holding a bottle of Dom Perignon champagne.

    In a corrido, or ballad, titled “El Mago,” the group Edicion Especial sang that Escobedo had changed for the better. “A long time ago it was different,” the song goes, but today he has “los gringos” eating at his Japanese restaurants. He thinks often of his brother, “the one who is in prison.”

    Investigators have not disclosed a motive for the killings. Camacho didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

    De Los Angeles had been released from federal prison in December 2022, court records show. A member of the 18th Street gang called “Sad Boy,” he served 10 years for distributing methamphetamine.

    After Escobedo’s death Thursday, the group Enigma Norteno put out a ballad called “El Mago Merlin.” Escobedo still hangs out in East Los Angeles and fears no one, the song goes. He baptized the child of Guzman Salazar, the kingpin’s son, and bought his “compadre” a white Lamborghini Huracan for his birthday.

    “The dream,” the singer says, “has come true.”

    Police on Friday were continuing to investigate why a car crashed into two pedestrians in South Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon, leaving a woman dead and a girl seriously injured.

    Around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, a car was exiting a private property near the intersection of 83rd Street and Western Avenue when it struck a vehicle heading south on Western, said Officer Melissa Ohana, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

    The car that had been struck then collided with two pedestrians on the sidewalk, a 26-year-old woman and an 8-year-old girl, Ohana said. The woman died at the scene. The child was taken to a hospital, where she remained Friday in critical condition. Ohana said the relationship between the two victims wasn’t clear.

    The driver of the car that initiated the chain of collisions, a 58-year-old man, was hospitalized in stable condition. Ohana said it wasn’t clear if alcohol or another intoxicant was a factor in the crash, but she added that detectives will take that into account as part of their investigation.

    The driver of the car that struck the woman and child was not hospitalized, Ohana said.

    Wayne Brady got into a fight over the weekend in Malibu with a driver who hit his car and tried to run away, authorities said. The incident ended with the arrest of the other driver.

    The “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” host was driving along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu near Las Flores Road and Duke’s restaurant around 7:30 p.m. Sunday when another car backed into Brady’s, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept. said in a statement shared with The Times.

    When Brady and the other driver pulled over to exchange information, the driver heard first responders’ sirens and ran away, the statement said. Brady attempted to stop the person, which led to “a minor physical altercation.”

    The driver ran into a nearby neighborhood, where deputies arrested the individual on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, hit and run with damage to property, and battery, the statement said.

    The department declined to release the person’s name, citing an ongoing investigation. Nobody required medical attention.

    Representatives for Brady did not immediately respond to The Times’ requests for comment.

    Brady most recently made headlines when he announced his pansexuality in an interview with People.

    He said he was prompted to start discovering new parts of himself after the 2014 death of Robin Williams, along with his own battle with depression.

    “I did all the therapy I could do,” he said. “I was treated for love addiction. It’s a part of my journey. I had to start examining why I was looking for myself and happiness in a slew of people.”

    Brady has hosted TV shows including “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” and “Let’s Make a Deal” and was a frequent panelist on “Whose Line Is It Anyway,” for which he won a Primetime Emmy. He has also acted in “30 Rock” and “Chappelle’s Show.”

    An accomplished stage actor, Brady also has starred in Broadway hits “Chicago,” “Rent” and “Hamilton.” He performed in a Hollywood Bowl revival of “Kinky Boots” in 2022 and next year will star as the titular character in the touring revival of “The Wiz.”

    You already turn off the lights when you leave a room or turn down the thermostat at night, right? In addition to that, Barry Walker, residential business development manager for efficiencyns.ca, says to check lightbulb packaging for LED wattage: “For example, it may read seven watts LED and say it’s equivalent to 60 watts of an incandescent light. So you’re only using a fraction of the energy to get the same amount of light.” He says that can save you 25% of the cost of lighting on your electricity bill. 

    Other cheap and cheerful ways to save on lighting and other energy costs: Buy motion sensors, smart power bars and electrical timers. “These are small things, but they’re inexpensive and they will pay for themselves very, very quickly.”

    Electricity and hydro savings tip: Consider a heat pump

    The biggest cost on Candians’ electricity bills is home heating, and heat pumps are becoming popular among Canadians because of government incentives to help with the costs. Walker installed a heat pump 20 years ago to replace his oil and electric heating in his 60-plus-year-old home in Halifax. “I’m a good old Scotsman and I kept every bill—my total energy costs dropped 40%,” he says. “I use thermal storage for my backup, and that heat pump is paying for itself three-fold now.” 

    Water savings tip: Get efficient 

    Plus, the heat pump can help save on the second biggest cost on your electricity: hot water. “Your payback will depend largely on the volume of hot water your household uses,” Walker says. “If you’ve got teenagers taking three showers a day, then the payback on that heat pump hot water tank will be fairly quick.” If a heat pump is too big of a commitment, you can opt for a more energy efficient hot water heater (even if you rent yours), says Walker. 

    Also, use cold water detergent to wash clothes and check for leaky taps. If you pay for municipal water, where you pay based on how much you use, that could be a sinkful of money a day going down the drain, he says. 

    How to save on internet and cable bills: Renegotiate service agreements

    Renegotiate or bundle internet and cable services, and examine your home insurance and auto insurance, suggests Scorgie. Also talk about usage, too. You might be in the wrong plan, as things have changed since 2020, and you might not need as much as you did during the lockdowns. Keehn says: “That’s hundreds of dollars a year. People may say, ‘But I’m going to have to sit on hold with the phone company for hours.’ Maybe you will, but just sit on hold while you’re watching Netflix,” she suggests.     How to save on cell phone bills: Check your bill and cut what you don’t need

    Check your phone bill: Has a signup bonus promotion expired because you forgot to renew it, resulting in higher fees? Are you paying for directory listings you don’t use? Also, in your settings, check for the apps that are running in the background, which can eat up a ton of data unknowingly when you’re out and about not connected to wifi.

    Early on the morning of Oct. 12, David Mays woke up in the Chevrolet he had been living in for two years, knowing this day would be different.

    Safe Parking L.A. had been a blessing, providing a covered space in a downtown garage, with on-site security and access to a bathroom. That was better than sleeping on the street with one eye open.

    But Mays had been hobbled by the discomfort of sleeping in the driver’s seat for months on end, and the 69-year-old caregiver had developed health concerns of his own. His legs were stiff, swollen and sore, complicating his hope of returning to work. And he was beginning to doubt promises that his wait for a place of his own would end despite the best efforts of Demi Dominguez, his Safe Parking case manager, to get him indoors.

    And then it happened. Dominguez learned in late summer of a possible slot for Mays at a soon-to-open apartment building in East Hollywood. The Wilcox was to be managed by The People Concern, a homeless services nonprofit, with on-site supportive services for adults 62 or older –- one of the fastest-growing segments of the state’s vast unhoused population.

    Mays drove to the Wilcox on the 12th, sat through an orientation and, finally, was escorted to his new home, a small but comfortable second-floor studio apartment.

    He was not overwhelmed, as one might expect. It was too much to process.

    California is about to be hit by an aging population wave, and Steve Lopez is riding it. His column focuses on the blessings and burdens of advancing age — and how some folks are challenging the stigma associated with older adults.

    “To be honest,” he told me, seated in his dining nook a few weeks after moving in, “I wasn’t aware. I wasn’t feeling it.”

    Mays, who speaks deliberately, turned inward, searching for the right words.

    “I had been taught to be justifiably cynical for so long, that when it finally happened, and it was real, and we’re doing this — this is your apartment — my brain almost kind of took a pause,” Mays said. “And then at some point, I realized — I think when I collapsed on that bed, and it took a couple of days for it to truly sink in –- this was my apartment.

    “I had been out there so long that this was almost the equivalent of a daydream, because I had been so far removed from what I knew to be a normal life before it all went south, “ he said. “And then to come back to some semblance of that, after two years of nothing … it’s a quantum leap.”

    Mays said the experience was “almost a shock wave … I’m lying there in that bed and I’m going, ‘Am I really here?’ I just laid out, and within 14 days, all the massive swelling went away. All of it.”

    Mays’ story is a small victory in a city with roughly 46,000 homeless people, but it’s also a window into a societal collapse and a grinding bureaucracy that has long been a symbol of government failure. Crippling housing and workforce shortages and a fragmented, dysfunctional response — along with entrenched poverty, unchecked mental illness and a raging drug epidemic — have produced a simmering humanitarian crisis visible to one and all.

    “The timeline for housing remains a multi-year process,” said Emily Uyeda Kantrim, who runs Safe Parking L.A. and said Mays was in the housing queue since 2021.

    Mays readily admits to his frustration.

    “I lost faith,” he said, telling me he came to believe that the “system” treats homelessness as a monolithic condition. In fact, it’s 46,000 puzzles, each with a different solution, but key pieces of each puzzle are missing.

    Eventually, he was buoyed by Safe Parking’s continued efforts to make a connection for him. Safe Parking helps its clients — a third of whom are older adults — with car maintenance costs and other expenses while they look for permanent housing.

    “They were with me through the whole process,” Mays said, right up to the time he moved into his new home.

    On Nov. 6, while Mays was in his room, L.A. Mayor Karen Bass was downstairs in the courtyard, presiding over the official grand opening of the Wilcox. Tackling the homelessness crisis was at the top of her agenda when she was elected a year ago, and I recall traveling across the city with her when she was a candidate, as she talked about blowing up the bureaucracy, leveraging her contacts in Washington and Sacramento, working with — rather than at odds with — county supervisors, and lowering the cost of new housing and building it faster.

    All of that remains a work in progress, but she gets high marks from some observers. Bass’ strategy of targeting problematic encampments, cutting through paperwork and leveraging her connections has changed the dynamic, said Miguel Santana, director of the California Community Foundation. Her background as a physician’s assistant has helped, too, he said, because she’s attuned to individual needs.

    “She has placed the priority on the person who is unhoused and tries to advocate for them, not for the system,” Santana said. “She’s pushing against the system.”

    “She has brought … real focus to this issue in a way no other administration has, and I’ve worked with several,” said John Maceri, director of The People Concern. “Her executive orders and directives, in terms of streamlining things, are real, and that has really expedited a lot of projects that had been languishing in the pipeline for a long time.”

    Bass, like me, turned 70 in October. I had told her more than a year ago that while I was thinking it might be time to scale back my output, she was running for what would be the toughest job of her career. She told me she badly wanted the job.

    “It’s been reported that one of the fastest-growing sectors of the unhoused population are our elders, and it is a scourge on society,” Bass told a small audience before doubling down on the need to continue addressing the crisis with a sense of urgency.

    The mayor then wanted to meet some of the residents, and the first one she visited was Mays.

    “How are you?” Mays asked when she stepped into his room, and Bass volleyed the question back at him.

    “I’m disoriented a little bit,” Mays said. “I can’t believe that this is happening.”

    They talked for several minutes about his career and his health, with Bass saying she wanted to make sure he was connected to the help he needed.

    “You brighten up my day,” Bass said. “This is what we’re trying to do. This is the goal.”

    Before the mayor arrived and after she left, Mays talked about his plans, which do not necessarily include a long-term stay at the Wilcox. He worked for years as a private in-home caregiver, with room and board included, but it’s a profession in which clients move on to nursing homes or die, and Mays ended up out of work and homeless.

    Given multiple health challenges, he doesn’t think he can be a live-in caregiver again, but he’d like to work day shifts if he can find the right match. He said the problem is that if he were to make more than $1,000 a month, on top of his Social Security income, he’d no longer be eligible for the apartment he just moved into.

    Mays said he’s got to figure out what to do about all of that, but emphasized that he doesn’t think of his arrival at the Wilcox as the end of his career or his aspirations.

    “I have to work that out,” he said. “This, for me, is another rest stop. And it’s a vast improvement over the last one.”

    Fourteen people were injured after a bus and a car collided with each other and then crashed into a Long Beach restaurant Thursday afternoon, officials said.

    Ten people were taken to nearby hospitals to be treated for injuries, including four who required advanced life support, said Capt. Jack Crabtree of the Long Beach Fire Department.

    The crash was reported at about 3:15 p.m. Thursday after a Long Beach public transit bus and a car crashed near South Street and California Avenue and then smashed into the structure, Crabtree said.

    Firefighters and paramedics arrived to find 14 people injured. They included two people who were in the vehicle. Firefighters had to extract the two passengers from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life. A dozen passengers from the bus also suffered injuries.

    A bus and car crashed into each other and then into a restaurant in Long Beach on Thursday.

    All of the injured appeared to be adults, he said.

    The first floor of the building that was struck was a restaurant, but no one inside the building was injured, he said.

    The second floor of the building is composed of residences. Two people were displaced as a result of damage to the structure, he said. They are receiving assistance from the Red Cross and Long Beach health officials.

    Building and Safety Department officials also responded to the area to assess the structure, Crabtree said.

    Two cars were shot at on the 91 freeway in Corona on Friday night, and the driver of one was hit in the leg by a bullet, law enforcement officials told KTLA.

    The shootings took place around 10:30 p.m. near McKinley St., according to KTLA. A man hit by gunfire was driving east. He was hospitalized and authorities said he was stable. Another car driven by a woman also heading east was hit twice by bullets, but she was not injured, police said.

    No arrests have been made and no information on the shooter has been released, police told KTLA.

Effective Jan. 1, 2024, ABG EVP of the Americas Izzy Martins will assume the role of EVP and CFO, succeeding Brian Choi, who will move to the newly created position of EVP and chief transformation officer.

    Martins has been with Avis Budget for nearly 20 years in various senior roles, including CFO of the Americas and chief accounting officer, according to the company.

    The driver accused of killing four Pepperdine students in a high-speed Malibu crash almost two weeks ago has been released on bond, according to jail records.

    Fraser Michael Bohm, 22, faces four counts of malice murder and four counts of gross vehicular manslaughter, Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. George Gascón said at a recent news conference, adding that the charges stem from Bohm’s “complete disregard for the life of others.”

    Prosecutors say Bohm was speeding along Pacific Coast Highway at 104 mph before the fatal collision.

    Bohm pleaded not guilty to the eight felony charges Wednesday in a Van Nuys courtroom, where his bail was initially set at $8 million but the amount was lowered to $4 million during his arraignment. He was released on bond on Friday.

    Bohm was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence following the Oct. 17 crash, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Maria Navarro said. But he was released hours later.

    In a news release at the time, the Sheriff’s Department said he was “released to allow detectives time to gather the evidence needed to secure the strongest criminal filing and conviction.”

    Bohm was re-arrested on Thursday and booked on suspicion of four counts of murder. In the days between arrests, investigators collected additional evidence — including toxicology test and search warrant results and speed analyses — before submitting the case to the district attorney’s office.

    Not much information about Bohm is available in public records. He attended Chaminade Prep and Oaks Christian, two pricey private schools with annual tuition of more than $20,000.

    The BMW driven in the accident was paid for by his parents, Christopher and Brooke Bohm, who lived in a home in a gated Malibu community that was valued at more than $8.7 million, according to the Daily Mail.

    Brooke Bohm filed for divorce in 2017, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court documents.

    The four people killed — Niamh Rolston, Peyton Stewart, Asha Weir and Deslyn Williams — were sisters in the Alpha Phi sorority and seniors at Pepperdine University. Authorities believe they were standing near several parked vehicles in the 21600 block of Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu when Bohm’s BMW barreled into the cars and then struck the women shortly before 9 p.m. on Oct. 17.

    Investigators said they have determined that Bohm was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, but the onboard computer of his car shows he was traveling at 104 mph before he lost control in the deadly collision, according to law enforcement sources who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly. It was that data, along with statements made by Bohm, saying he was aware of the posted 45-mph speed limit on that stretch of PCH, that led to the charges against him, sources say.

    But Bohm’s attorney, Michael Kraut, says his client was not traveling that fast. He also has forwarded a claim to prosecutors alleging that another vehicle was involved in the crash. Last week, Kraut said his client is the victim of a road-rage incident on the night of the crash.

    “They ignored evidence of a second car,” Kraut told The Times. “My client was getting away from the guy chasing him.”

    Kraut said another driver “came into the lane and clipped him,” and Bohm “hit the brakes.”

    “The evidence turned over showed at max [he was going] 70 mph,” Kraut said, citing the information he has received in the case, and adding that his client has “totally cooperated” with the investigation and passed a field sobriety test.

    L.A. County sheriff’s Sgt. Jim Arens told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday that he had “no evidence” that the crash stemmed from an alleged road rage incident.

    The collision has renewed calls for safety improvements on PCH, particularly in the area of the crash, which some call “Dead Man’s Curve.”

    The Arroyo Seco Parkway was busy in both directions on Sunday morning — without a car in sight.

    For four glorious hours, cyclists and pedestrians had a chance to safely explore six miles of the 110 Freeway between Los Angeles and Pasadena, a stretch of roadway that opened in 1940 and typically carries more 100,000 daily motorists who brave its winding turns and scary entrance ramps.

    Aside from events such as Sunday’s 626 Golden Streets ArroyoFest and other bike celebrations, such as CicLAvia, cycling in L.A. County is not for the faint of heart. The road network was built for automobiles. Bicyclists are often left to vie for space alongside cars on congested, poorly maintained streets. Fatal bike crashes are an intractable problem in the county, and efforts to build dedicated bike lanes have been spotty.

    A recent report from advocacy group BikeLA, found that 85% of L.A.’s bicycle fatalities happened on roads that didn’t have dedicated bike lanes. “Our infrastructure is failing bicyclists” across the county, said Eli Akira Kaufman, executive director of BikeLA.

    This was the reality for the cyclists who joined the crowd of thousands in Northeast L.A. on Sunday. A Times reporter and photographer spoke with bike riders and asked two questions: What do you love about cycling in L.A. and what would you change about it?

    Here’s what they told us.

    In the wake of California withdrawing Cruise’s permit to operate self-driving cars in the state, the company announced that it’s suspending all U.S. robotaxi operations.

    The move comes after the California Department of Motor Vehicles alleged that Cruise withheld from regulators video footage of a Cruise robotaxi dragging a person down a city street.

    The future for the company is uncertain. Its parent company, General Motors, has lost $1.9 billion on Cruise so far this year, including a $732-million loss in the third quarter, according to its latest earnings report. Competitor Ford shut down its Argo robotaxi unit in 2022, concluding that the possibility of far-off profits weren’t worth the enormous cash drain.

    The California DMV gave two reasons for suspending Cruise’s license this week: concerns about safety and claims that the company withheld from regulators video footage that showed a Cruise robotaxi drag an already injured woman 20 feet across street pavement before emergency workers could reach her.

    “The most important thing for us right now is to take steps to rebuild public trust,” Cruise said in a statement online Thursday night. “Part of this involves taking a hard look inwards and at how we do work at Cruise.”

    Cruise vehicles with humans behind the wheel will continue to operate. Until this week, the company had been operating driverless services in San Francisco, Phoenix, Miami, Houston and Austin, Texas.

    Cruise needs to be “extra vigilant when it comes to risk, relentlessly focused on safety” as it rebuilds public trust, a spokeswoman told The Times.

    The incident marks a dark chapter in the emerging history of the automated vehicle industry. Whether Cruise’s actions will harm the industry’s reputation, or only its own, remains to be seen.

    Robotaxi companies claim that autonomous vehicles are already safer than cars driven by humans. Officials in San Francisco say they’re having trouble getting these companies to provide adequate data to prove that. But Cruise is dealing with more than safety in this case — it’s dealing with allegations that it misled regulators and the media in ways that might erode public trust.

    On Oct. 2, a car with a human behind the wheel hit a woman who was crossing at the intersection of 5th and Market streets in San Francisco against a red light. The pedestrian slid over the hood and into the path of a Cruise robotaxi, with no human driver. She became pinned under the car, and was later taken to a hospital.

    Cruise quickly called the crash tragic but said that the robotaxi stopped as it was supposed to and that a human driver couldn’t have reacted as quickly.

    What Cruise did not say, and what the DMV revealed Tuesday, is that after sitting still for an unspecified period of time, the robotaxi began moving forward at about 7 mph, dragging the woman with it for 20 feet.

    Cruise had shown a video of the incident to reporters but barred them from posting it publicly. (Because of that restriction, The Times turned down Cruise’s offer.) The video shown to reporters ended with the robotaxi sitting motionless, but did not include the vehicle dragging the woman.

    The DMV said Cruise showed it the same abbreviated video, and only later did the agency see the full version. The two sides are fighting about that version of events. Cruise told reporters it showed the DMV the full video from the start.

    In response to a request for comment, a spokesperson for the DMV said it stands by the facts outlined in the orders of suspension.

    Controversy has surrounded the company for months, after San Francisco’s fire chief lit into Cruise and another robotaxi company, Waymo, for interfering with firetrucks and emergency workers. Police said robotaxis were getting in their way too.

    Dozens of such incidents have been reported, including robotaxis blocking an ambulance from exiting a firehouse, driving onto fire hoses and parking themselves there, bursting through police tape and getting tangled in downed utility wires. Cruise robotaxis sometimes gather together up to a dozen at a time to block pedestrians and other cars at busy intersections, a phenomenon whose cause remains a mystery, at least to the public.

    Nonetheless, the California Public Utilities Commission, which regulates taxi fares, voted to allow a massive expansion of robotaxi service across San Francisco. Cruise Chief Executive Kyle Vogt soon started talking about big plans for explosive growth, including the introduction next year of a six-passenger pod-like vehicle with no steering wheel called the Origin. “The goal is to get to scale as quickly as we can in terms of the total number of AVs to make this business profitable and sustainable,” he said at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in September.

    Waymo, owned by Google parent Alphabet, is also planning to grow its fleets and move into new cities. It has already launched in Santa Monica and will soon expand to Los Angeles. Los Angeles officials are trying to get a close look at company plans, but are stymied by state law that gives cities little authority over robotaxi operations.

    Other robotaxi companies are also gearing up to expand, including Zoox and Motional. Those companies are likely to draw more scrutiny in the wake of Cruise’s setback, said Bryant Walker Smith, an automated vehicle law expert at the University of South Carolina.

    Alain Kornhauser, who heads the autonomous vehicle engineering program at Princeton, said the dragging incident is indeed tragic but it’s something that can be fixed. “The problem is, I don’t think anybody who’s writing code thought about a person being trapped under the car,” he said. “Now they can do something like mount a camera to make sure there’s no one under the car before it moves.”

    People will be forgiving of odd robotaxi behavior if they trust the companies involved, he said. “But this covering-up business and not being forthright” does long-term damage to public acceptance, he said. “Didn’t we learn from Watergate that the coverup can be worse than the crime? They could be apologetic. They could say, ‘We’re not going to do that again.’”

    In a bizarre crash-turned-robbery, four men in ski masks robbed a luxury car Tuesday afternoon after they intentionally rammed into the car on the 10 Freeway in Los Angeles, according to the California Highway Patrol.

    Multiple nearby witnesses, some driving by the incident, captured the bizarre heist on video, which showed the broad-daylight robbery on the side of the busy freeway.

    A black Dodge caravan, occupied by the four men in black ski masks, intentionally crashed into a black Alfa Romeo, disabling the vehicle around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday on the eastbound 10 Freeway, near Arlington Avenue, CHP investigators said in a news release. Officials said the men were armed with a hammer and a crowbar and jumped into a white Chevrolet Malibu and sped away after the robbery.

    A Ford Mustang was also struck during the crash.

    The suspects all ran out of the Dodge caravan toward the disabled vehicle, which the driver had evacuated, video from the incident showed. The driver was kneeling with his hands in the air as the men first looked in his driver door, then went to his trunk.

    It wasn’t immediately clear what the men took from the vehicle, but a video from the scene sounded like the men yelled something about getting “dope.”

    It appears an air bag went off in the victim’s vehicle.

    CHP officers did not report any injuries from the incident. No one has been arrested, CHP spokesperson Roberto Gomez said Thursday.

    Hospitality businesses in Tauranga’s CBD are “fuming” as 147 waterfront car parks are set to be turned into a green space.

    A bar owner says closing the parking area just before summer will be “the worst thing” for businesses, and a real estate leader says the change will be the “death nail” for the “dying” CBD and his business might move.

    Tauranga City Council says The Strand waterfront car park is closing on Monday for the area to be transformed into a green reserve and playground. It is expected to be under construction until mid-2024.

    The council says redeveloping this “prime waterfront location” is important for Tauranga CBD’s revitalisation and will be a “drawcard” for locals and visitors.

    It says new parks have been added nearby and the number of spots in the city centre will “will largely remain the same” once work on the Spring St parking building ends.

    In under a week, however, more than 1000 people have signed an online petition expressing “concern and opposition” to the closure of “one of the city centre’s most vital car parking spaces”.

    It was started by Mainstreet Tauranga chairwoman and Miss Gee’s Bar and Eatery owner Ashleigh Gee on Friday.

    1. The owner of a 2018 C-HR that experienced a failure at just over 100,000 kilometres and five years received an estimate of $10,000 to replace the transmission with a new one. After he complained, the repair cost was reduced to $4,000, with Toyota Canada and the dealer making up the difference.
    2. Toyota Canada rejected a claim for a transmission failure at 138,000 kilometres on a 2019 C-HR; the Montreal-area dealer estimated the repair at slightly over $10,000.

    An alternative to replacing the transmission: A less expensive repair

    If no help is forthcoming, an alternative may be to find a used transmission from a wrecked C-HR and have it installed, for a final price in the range of $4,000 to $5,000. The risk: a replacement used transmission may well develop the same defect as your original transmission over time—that’s a risky bet if you intend to hang on to your C-HR for many more years.

    A third way to fix a CH-R transmission

    I checked with Alain Groulx, a transmission expert who has helped many members of the APA resolve transmission failures. Here’s his take on the transmission failure in your C-HR:

    “Based on the information provided, it seems to be an issue with defective bearings inside the transmission. It’s a shame that dealers are recommending replacing the entire transmission at the customer’s expense instead of trying to repair it. By replacing a complete transmission, the warranty is carried by the manufacturer, so there is less risk for the dealer, but it comes at a heavy price to the customer.

    “A good transmission rebuilder may be able to open and repair the transmission. We had similar issues with the Jeep Patriot that used a CVT transmission on some models. The differential carrier bearings experienced many failures at low mileages; we were able to source and replace the bearings at a fraction of the cost of a new transmission.

    “If this is a recurring problem, Toyota could make a bearing set available as a recommended repair kit. That has the potential to drop the repair price to about $3,000, if the problem is picked up early before a complete bearing failure ruins other components inside the transmission. Sometimes bearings are available from independent suppliers like General Bearing Service (GBS) or similar suppliers. In order to know if they are available in the aftermarket, the transmission would have to be dismantled to get the part number on the defective bearing. In many cases, the bearing is made exclusively for the manufacturer and is not available unless the automaker offers it as a replacement part independently of a complete transmission.”

    “Broken telephone” effect: Documenting your transmission failure complaint to prepare a claim

    Information sometimes gets lost in translation when a customer reports a problem. In your case, a suggestion to check for “a whine from the engine” may have been enough to throw the technician off the trail. Or the road test conducted during the warranty period was not done at sufficient speed or for enough time to elicit the noise you were hearing.

    Here are some steps you can take during the warranty period to improve the odds that issues with your vehicle will be addressed and avoid the “broken telephone” effect:

    1. Ensure your concerns are recorded accurately. Focus on symptoms over solutions, unless you are already familiar with the problem and its repair.
    2. If possible, identify a location on the vehicle to check more carefully, the speed, road conditions, warm/cold engine and other factors that appear relevant.
    3. Use your cellphone to capture intermittent problems that magically seem to disappear when you take your vehicle in for service. For example, record abnormal sounds that come and go, and take photos of warning lights that come on temporarily.
    4. Obtain copies of repair orders, even for no-charge inspections, and retain them.

    In my experience, helping consumers with resolving complaints, you can go back about a year relatively successfully for a problem that was reported during the warranty period but wasn’t addressed. To do that, having complete service records will improve your chances of a favourable outcome significantly.

    Making your case if your claim is rejected

    A transmission, which is a lifetime component of a vehicle, should last for much more than six years or 110,000 kilometres, as long as it’s maintained and isn’t abused. Almost all the automakers that introduced CVT transmissions eventually extended the warranties on some of them past the original “five-year, 100,000-km” powertrain warranty to address durability concerns.

    If Toyota Canada isn’t forthcoming with assistance, Ontario lawyer Michael Turk says you could sue the manufacturer, basing your claim on the implied warranty of fitness under the province’s Sale of Goods Act:

    You will need to obtain an expert report from a third party, typically a mechanic or transmission expert who will be able to confirm that the bearing is the cause of the failure, and that the failure occurred as a result of a manufacturer’s defect in the transmission. With the expert’s report in hand, your next step is to file a claim in the Small Claims Court for the cost of repair and any additional costs you have incurred as a result of the loss of use of the vehicle arising form the transmission failure. You could also argue that the vehicle exhibited problems with the transmission while it was still under the manufacturer’s original warranty and this was brought to the attention of the dealer at the 88,000-kilometre service while still under warranty. Lastly, when choosing an expert, it is important for the expert to be able to be qualified by the Court as an expert and that your expert is willing to come to court and testify on your behalf. This process has become easier and less disruptive to those who provide expert evidence as the courts have transitioned to a virtual format.

    Given that the complaints received to date are serious, I invite other Toyota C-HR owners with an experience to share about their vehicle’s transmission to contact the APA. This will help the association identify a pattern of failures and determine what actions Toyota Canada is taking to address complaints.

    Today’s happiness and personal-finance gurus have no shortage of advice for living a good life. Meditate daily. Sleep for eight hours a night. Don’t forget to save for retirement. They’re not wrong, but few of these experts will tell you one of the best ways to improve your life: Ditch your car.

    A year ago, my wife and I sold one of our cars and replaced it with an e-bike. As someone who writes about climate change, I knew that I was doing something good for the planet. I knew that passenger vehicles are responsible for much of our greenhouse-gas emissions—16 percent in the U.S., to be exact—and that the pollution spewing from gas-powered cars doesn’t just heat up the planet; it could increase the risk of premature death. I also knew that electric cars were an imperfect fix: Though they’re responsible for less carbon pollution than gas cars, even when powered by today’s dirty electric grid, their supply chain is carbon intensive, and many of the materials needed to produce their batteries are, in some cases, mined via a process that brutally exploits workers and harms ecosystems and sacred Indigenous lands. An e-bike’s comparatively tiny battery means less electricity, fewer emissions, fewer resources. They are clearly better for the planet than cars of any kind.

    I knew all of this. But I also viewed getting rid of my car as a sacrifice—something for the militant and reckless, something that Greenpeace volunteers did to make the world better. I live in Colorado; e-biking would mean freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer. It was the right thing to do, I thought, but it was not going to be fun.

    I was very wrong. The first thing I noticed was the savings. Between car payments, insurance, maintenance, and gas, a car-centered lifestyle is expensive. According to AAA, after fuel, maintenance, insurance, taxes, and the like, owning and driving a new car in America costs $10,728 a year. My e-bike, by comparison, cost $2,000 off the rack and has near-negligible recurring charges. After factoring in maintenance and a few bucks a month in electricity costs, I estimate that we’ll save about $50,000 over the next five years by ditching our car.

    The actual experience of riding to work each day over the past year has been equally surprising. Before selling our car, I worried most about riding in the cold winter months. But I quickly learned that, as the saying goes, there is no bad weather, only bad gear. I wear gloves, warm socks, a balaclava, and a ski jacket when I ride, and am almost never too cold.

    Sara Hastings-Simon is a professor at the University of Calgary, where she studies low-carbon transportation systems. She’s also a native Californian who now bikes to work in a city where temperatures tend to hover around freezing from December through March. She told me that with the right equipment, she’s able to do it on all but the snowiest days—days when she wouldn’t want to be in a car, either. “Those days are honestly a mess even on the roads,” she said.

    And though I, like many would-be cyclists, was worried about arriving at the office sweaty in hotter months, the e-bike solved my problem. Even when it was 90 degrees outside, I didn’t break a sweat, thanks to my bike’s pedal-assist mode. If I’m honest, sometimes I didn’t even pedal; I just used the throttle, sat back, and enjoyed my ride.

    Indeed, a big part of the appeal here is in the e part of the bike: “E-bikes aren’t just a traditional bike with a motor. They are an entirely new technology,” Hastings-Simon told me. Riding them is a radically different experience from riding a normal bike, at least when it comes to the hard parts of cycling. “It’s so much easier to take a bike over a bridge or in a hilly neighborhood,” Laura Fox, the former general manager of New York City’s bike-share program, told me. “I’ve had countless people come up to me and say, ‘I never thought that I could bike to work before, and now that I have an option where you don’t have to show up sweaty, it’s possible.’” (When New York introduced e-bikes to its fleet, ridership tripled, she told me, from 500,000 to 1.5 million people.)

    But biking to work wasn’t just not unpleasant—it was downright enjoyable. It made me feel happier and healthier; I arrived to work a little more buoyant for having spent the morning in fresh air rather than traffic. Study after study shows that people with longer car commutes are more likely to experience poor health outcomes and lower personal well-being—and that cyclists are the happiest commuters. One day, shortly after selling our car, I hopped on my bike after a stressful day at work and rode home down a street edged with changing fall leaves. I felt more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I’d traveled the same route surrounded by metal and glass. I breathed in the air, my muscles relaxed, and I grinned like a giddy schoolchild.

    “E-bikes are like a miracle drug,” David Zipper, a transportation expert and Visiting Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School, told me. “They provide so much upside, not just for the riders, but for the people who are living around them too.”

    Of course, e-bikes aren’t going to replace every car on every trip. In a country where sprawling suburbs and strip malls, not protected bike lanes, are the norm, it’s unrealistic to expect e-bikes to replace cars in the way that the Model T replaced horses. But we don’t need everyone to ride an e-bike to work to make a big dent in our carbon-pollution problem. A recent study found that if 5 percent of commuters were to switch to e-bikes as their mode of transportation, emissions would fall by 4 percent. As an individual, you don’t even need to sell your car to reduce your carbon footprint significantly. In 2021, half of all trips in the United States were less than three miles, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Making those short trips on an e-bike instead of in a car would likely save people money, cut their emissions, and improve their health and happiness.

    E-bikes are such a no-brainer for individuals, and for the collective, that state and local governments are now subsidizing them. In May, I asked Will Toor, the executive director of the Colorado Energy Office, to explain the state’s rationale for a newly passed incentive that offers residents $450 to get an e-bike. He dutifully ticked through the environmental benefits and potential cost savings for low-income people. Then he surprised me: The legislation, he added, was also about “putting more joy into the world.”

    The driver of a BMW plowed through a tobacco shop in Brea on Thursday afternoon, knocking down display shelves and narrowly missing a customer and a shop employee.

    A customer leaning on the counter and an employee behind the register were hit by debris when the black BMW 440i crashed through the front door, according to surveillance camera video obtained by OnSceneTV. No one appeared to be directly hit by the car.

    When the car came to a stop, the female driver can be seen rolling down her window and peering out at the carnage around the vehicle, according to the video. She then appears to try to put the vehicle in reverse.

    Police told OnSceneTV the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and the building was deemed unsafe by a city building inspector. The Brea Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday morning.

    Store employee Ansh Sedh said he believes the driver was trying to pull into a parking spot when she drove into the tobacco shop. He said the car pressed a display into his leg.

    “I tried to step back as much as possible but there’s only two or three feet of space. She pushed everything onto me,” Sedh said outside the shop shortly after the crash. “I didn’t realize I was hurt until the adrenaline went down.”

    Sedh explained that a friend who was in the shop was taken to the hospital with a minor injury to his leg.

    Store owner Kevin Salma was stunned by how quickly it happened.

    “It’s crazy. A car slammed into the shop. Everything happened in a quick second,” Salma told OnSceneTV. “You see this in the movies only.”

    Salma said a customer in the shop was hurt, but he didn’t know if the driver was injured in the crash.

    Five years ago, auto insurance companies in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and the Atlantic provinces paid out $400 million in theft claims. In 2022, that figure ballooned to $1.2 billion, the worst on record. Amanda Dean, interim vice president of Ontario region for the Insurance Bureau of Canada, says the situation isn’t likely to improve for 2023. 

    “As theft rates increase, and along with it claims costs, insurers are certainly worried about what the future could hold,” she says. For drivers, even those with no history of theft or damage, auto insurance is likely to get more expensive so long as theft rates remain high. Fortunately, experts say there are some things drivers can do to minimize their chances of losing their ride.

    Why car theft is on the rise across Canada 

    Joyriders and opportunists aren’t responsible for most Canadian car thefts, according to insurance experts. Organized crime groups, using sophisticated techniques, bear much of the blame for Canada’s billion-dollar-a-year auto theft problem. 

    Bryan Gast is the vice president of investigative services for Équité Association, a national not-for-profit that helps Canadian insurers fight fraud. He says one common technique is a relay attack: intercepting the radio frequency used by a key fob to unlock a car remotely. Another is by using the electronic diagnostic port found under a car’s steering wheel to reprogram the car. 

    Once inside, a thief can drive away with your ride and sell it off. In the most extreme cases, it may end up smuggled through a port—generally on Canada’s eastern seaboard, Gast says—and shipped to West Africa or the Middle East. “We have thousands of vehicles, that have been identified, that we’re working to repatriate back to Canada,” Gast says. 

    Alternatively, a car might be given a false vehicle identification number (VIN) and used as a car by an organized crime group for its operations. Then there are old-fashioned “chop shops,” where stolen cars are stripped down and sold off for parts. “It’s extremely lucrative,” Gast says.

    Experts blame a couple of factors on the rise in auto thefts over the past few years. Dean points to outdated anti-theft standards for Canadian vehicles—the last update, in 2007, was before keyless entry became a common feature on many cars. Then there’s the price of cars themselves. Thanks to persistently-high demand, the average new vehicle cost $66,288 in June 2023, according to Autotrader. 

    The most stolen cars in Canada

    Many of the most-stolen vehicles in Canada aren’t all that flashy. Gast says the models vary by region. In Alberta, for example, pickup trucks are high on the list. According to Équité Association, the most commonly stolen vehicle model in Canada last year was the Honda CR-V. The Ford F-150, Honda Civic and Toyota Highlander—all mainstays of Canadian driveways—made the list of top five most stolen vehicles, as did the Lexus RX, a higher-end model.

    Even if you don’t own one of these vehicles, Dean says you’re still on the hook for the ongoing auto theft epidemic. “Claims made by the few are paid for by the premiums of many—this is one of the basic principles of insurance to ensure that claims can be paid.”

    I am grateful. I am soooo grateful. I have a warm and wonderful home, and a partner to share my life with, and I have a beautiful and healthy little boy who literally makes my heart sing every single day. I was thinking about a church homily I heard once about planning for the future but also finding a balance living in the present as well, and taking stock in what you do have in your life. I try to do that every day, numerous times a day. And I want to teach my son gratitude.

    That entails being observant. When we’re surrounded by his toys and books and things, we often stop to look around us and pause to see how lucky we are that we have so many toys. I want my son to realize how much we have (and it’s too much, really).

    We also look at what’s going on around us, and we talk about how can we help these people in any way possible (we recently gathered loads of clothes and toys for donation). We reflect on our own blessings and, again, how lucky we are to have a roof over our heads, food on the table, etc.

    We acknowledge when we receive gifts by writing thank-you cards or even making artwork for the person. My son is quite popular with the church-goers of my parish, and they would frequently pick up little cars and trucks for him. And we would always go home and make them something for the following Sunday to thank them. We’d talk about how nice it was for that person to stop and take time to think about our bean. And I think he genuinely feels lucky to receive these little gifts.

    We buy for others, together. If we know it’s someone’s birthday, the bean always helps me choose the gift. Yes, I may encounter the requests to buy him something too, but I’m adamant about not doing so, because he has to learn that we do for others. And he’s usually very good about it.

    We stop and thank people. Food vendors and store employees. We hold doors for people. We wave “thank you” when cars let us cross the street. If there’s one way to raise a conscientious, thoughtful child, it’s by teaching gratitude. Every day.
