This past week carried a quiet intensity, the kind that rewards patience and presence in equal measure. From long track and finds that ended high in the branches of jackalberry and marula trees, to perfectly timed golden-lit scenes unfolding effortlessly across open clearings. The bush seemed to move from moments of stillness to sudden action. Apex predators dominated much of Nic and my week, yet it was often the smaller, more subtle moments (an elusive coucal inching closer to our vehicle or the rare spot of a lunar moth) that reminded us of the layered richness of this land. Light, movement and anticipation wove themselves through each sighting, shaping a week that felt both perfectly timed and exciting!

Perfectly timed symmetry between two male giraffes as we watched them necking as a means of determining who is more dominant.
The Shingi Male has been such a highlight of most game drives, being a young and inquisitive leopard he is often doing something that keeps us all entertained for a while.

With him elevated off the ground and out of the long grass, we snapped a nice close-up clean shot of him.
The Shingi Male was peacefully resting on a fallen marula when he spotted a small herd of impala in the distance. He quickly tried to change his pose, tucked himself as low down on the branches as he could, trying to remain hidden and out of view. His body language and movements changed considerably in a matter of seconds.
A different perspective of him on the branch. This was such an awesome sighting that we have included a number of photos of him into this week’s TWIP.
Late afternoon light captured the scene beautifully. Over one hundred White-backed Vultures lined the dead leadwood trees of southwest Londolozi, patiently waiting for their turn to feed, as the lions finished off the remains of a buffalo kill.
One of my favourite lions on Londolozi. The Styx Male roared up and down the road for the better part of two hours, looking for the Kambula Breakaway Lioness he has partnered with for some time now. The two shared a buffalo cow kill and may have been split up when more lions and scavenging hyenas showed up at the carcass.
Hazy, golden-lit sunrises light up a crest full of impala. Even though I didn’t quite capture the impala staring at the camera or in perfect form, nothing quite beats heading out on your morning game drive and this being the first scene of the day!
The Shingi Male paused briefly on an ex-branch of this marula tree to assess his height and landing spot. Moments later, he dropped to the ground and continued his morning wandering through the long, green and luscious grass.

A curious male giraffe lifts his head amidst feeding to stare us down as we drove past. With giraffe’s leathery and prehensile tongues, thick saliva and lips, it protect their mouths from thorns.
The Talamati Male gave us a spectacular show as he showed why ‘yawning’ in cats is a great sign of their restlessness and intent to start moving. Shortly after, he walked through the clearings and headed down to the Sand River for a late afternoon drink. Cheers!
The elusive Burchells Coucal. One of my favourite summer calls in the bush. We were sitting with sleeping lions when we heard this bird’s incessant call coming closer and closer towards our vehicle. It’s always a privilege to be able to be sitting with lions and still appreciating all the smaller creatures of life around them.
The Nkoveni Female leopard poses perfectly at dusk for us. We’d spent an entire afternoon with her while she rested in long grass. Our patience paid off as we stayed with her until she woke up to start her evening patrol.

A hyena sub-adult rests on the airstrip in the early hours of the morning. After consistent rains in the night, he found great refuge on the dry tarmac to catch his breathe after what could only have been another interesting night of scavenging activities.
Silhouettes of any animal are exquisite, however, the natural golden morning light at sunrise matches the majesty of this young male Giraffe. He also paused for a moment to appreciate the breaking of a new day.
A beautiful African Moon Moth, also known as a Lunar Moth! These fascinating moths are a rare find at Londolozi due to their large, pale-green wings and short 7–10 day adult lifespan. These moths do not have functional mouths and do not eat as adults, focusing solely on mating. First time photographing one of them for me!

Helping low-income dog and cat parents access free vet care, food, and support to keep animals and families together.
Approximately 20 million dogs and cats in the US are experiencing poverty with their human families. Millions more are hovering just above the poverty line. A shocking 70% of these animals have never seen a veterinarian, as their families struggle to afford basic necessities.
In early November, Humane World for Animals (formerly the Humane Society of the United States) launched Pets for Life (PFL), a new pet support program for families in poverty. This is in addition to their year-round distribution of pet food and supplies to under-served areas around the country.
PFL addresses the systemic challenges that people and companion animals experiencing poverty face. It addresses inequity and lack of access to resources through door-to-door outreach and support services. PFL provides veterinary care, supplies, services and information at no cost to dog and cat parents living in poverty.
Pets for Life has two core programs in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. It also has over 60 dedicated local partner programs on the ground across the US. To date, they have provided essential veterinary services and resources to nearly 400,000 companion animals. These services include spay/neuter, wellness care, and vaccines, at no cost to the families.
The program has also provided more than $117 million in pet food and supplies, both to its 60+ locations as well as over 300 under-served communities.
“Over the last few years, costs of veterinary care and pet food/supplies have surpassed overall inflation, increasing more than 40% and 20% respectively,” says Amanda Arrington, VP of Access to Care for Humane World for Animals.
“No one should be in the impossible situation of choosing between feeding themselves, their family or their animals. Through Pets for Life we do all we can to support families.”
“During times of economic strain, shelters see an uptick in surrenders and a decrease in adoptions,” adds Lindsay Hamrick, director of shelter outreach and engagement for Humane World for Animals. “It’s heartbreaking for families forced to make these difficult choices. And it creates a challenge for shelters and rescues.
“The best possible outcome is making it possible to keep animals with their families. [Pets for Life does this] by providing resources to ensure veterinary care and food is accessible even during hard times.”

Why This Recall Issue Matters
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause illness in both pets and humans. Dogs that eat contaminated treats may experience gastrointestinal symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea (possibly bloody), vomiting, fever, and decreased appetite. Some infected dogs may not show symptoms but can still spread the bacteria to other animals and people.
People handling contaminated treats or touching surfaces the treats have contacted can also be exposed to Salmonella. This is especially concerning for young children, elderly adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
If your pet shows any signs of illness after eating the recalled product or if you’re worried about exposure, contact your veterinarian.

The Short Wheel Base Leopard
We found him in the northern stretches of Londolozi, draped across the branches of a marula in that calm, heavy-bodied way big male leopards do when they know they rule the place. Stocky, powerful and built like the leopard equivalent of a pitbull, he’s been a remarkably successful male across the Sabi Sands. And on this afternoon, he looked every bit the part. A big, confident cat in his prime framed perfectly for two of the guests who happened to be avid photographers (Rudi and Marion shoutout). In that sense, the sighting felt like a gift.

The Doldrums
Most guides will admit that, after years of working here, you start to quietly “manifest” specific sightings. Not out of entitlement but out of pure love for the place and its possibilities. We daydream about seeing certain leopards in certain trees because every now and then, the bush lines things up so perfectly it almost feels orchestrated. Rain over the past few days had made tracking tricky, add to this that male leopards roam vast territories, and you start to realise that the odds weren’t exactly in our favour! Still, off we went, bouncing between roads he might patrol, reading the landscape for movement, sound, anything. An hour and a half later or so we hit what I can only describe as the doldrums. No tracks. No alarm calls. Nothing. Just the creeping feeling that maybe today wasn’t our day.
Imagination Regurgitation
Which is precisely when I started talking up my favourite marula in the area. The “perfect leopard tree”. Every guide has a few. Height, angles, background, clean branches… the whole checklist. So there I was, painting this grand picture for my guests, fully leaning into the fantasy of finding the Tortoise Pan Male draped over that exact tree, even though I knew the bush rarely listens to our plans.
A Not So Eloquent Moment of Discovery
We continued up a rise, and in mid-sentence, I spotted a shape in the branches ahead. A leopard. I momentarily forgot my own name and yelled something along the lines of “S**t“! So loud I shouted, I nearly sent my guests and Euce into cardiac arrest. As I sped up towards the sighting, the punchline hit. The Tortoise Pan male wasn’t in THE marula. He was in a far less photogenic marula about 40 metres to the east. Quite literally the closest tree to THAT tree.

Bushveld Humour, Never Take Yourself to Seriously
There he lay close enough to feel like he’d heard every word of my enthusiastic build-up but far enough away to remind me that the bushveld has a dry sense of humour. We burst out laughing. The perfect tree stood empty, glowing in the afternoon light like a missed stage cue, while the Tortoise Pan Male himself lounged smugly nearby, clearly unbothered by my grand plans. And honestly? It was perfect anyway. A big male leopard in a marula is a privilege no matter which tree he chooses. That much will forever remain true – a reason this job never gets old!
Moments like these are a reminder to just get out there, enjoy the unpredictability and soak up the magic for whatever it is. Londolozi has a way of meeting you halfway… often with a grin.
The Tortoise Pan male, once again, delivered. Just not quite in the way I’d scripted.
Picture this: A male English Bulldog waddles over to a female in heat, full of confidence and swagger. Then… nothing. His barrel chest, stocky front legs, and low-slung build turn what should be natural into something nearly impossible. This isn’t a failure on his part, but it’s a direct result of the very features we bred into these dogs to make them look the way they do.
That wrinkled face, wide stance, and muscular, boxy body? All breed standards. All reasons why English Bulldogs typically can’t mate without human intervention.
The Physical Problem
A male English Bulldog’s body simply doesn’t work for natural breeding. Those short, strong back legs paired with an extremely broad chest make it physically difficult to successfully mount and mate with a female. While it sometimes can happen naturally with enough time, effort, and luck, most breeders don’t leave it to chance.
Interestingly, female English Bulldogs can breed naturally with other medium to large breeds that have longer legs. So if your female Bulldog is in heat, keep her away from other dogs unless you’re prepared for a litter of mixed puppies.

Why Your Bulldog Puppy Costs Thousands
Artificial insemination by a licensed veterinarian costs several hundred dollars per procedure. But that’s just the beginning.
Pregnant English Bulldogs need C-sections because their puppies’ large skulls often can’t fit through the birth canal. A scheduled C-section runs around $1,000 or more. An emergency C-section? That can exceed $5,000, and if you are working with a breeder, you should confirm that they would not leave a C-section up to chance. This should be scheduled in, as in emergencies, it doesn’t always end well. These aren’t simple procedures. They’re major surgeries to safely remove puppies from the uterus.
When you’re looking at $1,500 to $4,500 for an English Bulldog puppy, you’re not just paying for cuteness. You’re covering the significant medical intervention required to bring that puppy into the world.
The Health Reality Check, Beyond Breeding
The same body structure that makes breeding difficult creates other challenges throughout a Bulldog’s life.
Breathing struggles: That flat, wrinkled face often comes with brachycephalic syndrome, an upper airway abnormality that causes breathing problems and exercise intolerance. These aren’t mild inconveniences; they affect daily quality of life.
Joint problems: English Bulldogs are prone to elbow and hip dysplasia as they grow, due to improper joint development. Over time, this can progress to canine arthritis, severely limiting their mobility.
Skin and eye issues: All that excessive facial skin creates fold-upon-fold where bacteria thrive, leading to skin infections. Drooping eyelids can rub against the eye itself, causing ongoing irritation and problems.
Regular veterinary visits aren’t optional with this breed. They’re essential maintenance.

So… Are They Worth It?
Here’s the honest answer: If you’re hesitating because of the health issues and costs, that hesitation is completely valid.
But here’s the other side: English Bulldogs are packed with personality. They’ve got swagger, quirky attitudes, and an appearance that’s genuinely distinctive. They make wonderful family pets for people who understand what they’re signing up for.
If you can afford the initial $1,500–$4,500 purchase price and you’re prepared for ongoing veterinary care, quality food, and potentially significant medical bills, an English Bulldog can be an amazing companion. Just go in with your eyes open.

Pet health insurance (seriously, get it from day one)
Budget for frequent vet checkups
Immediate veterinary attention when health issues appear—don’t wait
The Bottom Line
English Bulldogs may breed naturally on rare occasions, but their bodies make it exceptionally difficult. The same build that makes them recognizable, stocky, muscular, and low to the ground, is exactly what prevents natural mating and natural birth.
The irony isn’t lost: We bred these dogs to look a specific way, and that specific look created these complications.
If you decide an English Bulldog is right for you, commit to monitoring their health closely and building a relationship with a good veterinarian. These dogs give tremendous love and personality, but they need owners willing to invest in their care from puppyhood through their senior years.

Over the past few days, pet and vet communities have been reeling from the revelation that high levels of heavy metals have been detected in dry dog food. How could this have happened? As we reviewed the findings of this report, we discovered that the headline being repeated across the internet is extremely misleading.
As pet parents, we place a certain amount of faith in the pet food industry when it comes to providing healthy, nutritionally balanced, and, above all else, safe food for our dogs. While the only way we can ever be sure about the integrity and safety of the ingredients we feed our four-legged friends would be to grow, harvest/slaughter, and produce the food ourselves, for most people, this is neither practical or possible. And so, we rely on reputable and recognized brands, AAFCO labeling, and the advice of veterinary professionals like myself to help us make the right choices.
So when a report like the one from Clean Label Project (CLP) declares that there have been “Extremely High Levels of Lead, Mercury, Arsenic, and Cadmium Found in Dry Dog Food”, it’s going to raise some red flags. However, we have discovered that not all is as it seems.
The non-profit organization, whose raison d’êtra is to provide impartial information and transparency about the products we use, consume, and feed to our pets, evaluated 79 of the top-selling dry, air-dried, freeze-dried, and fresh/frozen dog foods. They assessed multiple panels of industrial and environmental contaminants, including heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, mercury, & lead, as well as phthalates, which can disrupt endocrine function, and acrylamide, the carcinogenic compound by-product of high-temperature production.
Understandably, without relocating our lives to a hermetically sealed biodome, we are bound to be exposed to varying levels of these compounds in our everyday lives; in the air we breathe, the water we drink and bathe in, and the food we eat. Although the metabolic system is designed to mop up and eliminate these harmful elements, there is a limit to how much the liver and kidneys can eradicate. Once that threshold is reached, these materials can cause cellular damage, organ dysfunction, cancer, hormonal imbalances, and diseases like diabetes.
In the case of dog food, it is believed that many of these contaminants come from:
Meat by-products: Livers, lungs, kidneys, spleens, etc.
Added vitamin and mineral premix: Specific vitamins and minerals are necessary for dogs.
Seafood and plant-based carbohydrates: Grains, root vegetables, etc.

In the report by the CLP, there is a stark difference between the levels of heavy metals and other contaminants in dry dog food and those of fresh/frozen meals. It is worth noting, however, that whilst most dry kibble contains around 10% moisture, fresh and frozen dog foods are often up to 70% water.
This is a significant consideration when talking about the concentration of nutrients and contaminants, something veterinarian Dr. Joseph Wakshlag, a professor and nutritional specialist at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, New York, was quick to point out in a recent interview with CNN’s Sandee LaMotte.
“You also can’t take those numbers at face value, because a dog has to eat about 3 cups of fresh or frozen dog food to get the same calories and nutrients as 1 cup of dry food,” he said. “Therefore, the dog’s exposure to heavy metals in fresh or frozen foods goes up because it has to eat two to three times as much.”
Based on 50 dry food samples, 11 air/freeze-dried, and 18 fresh/frozen, the results from the analyses are quite an eye-opener.

According to the FDA’s 2019 Report on Heavy Metals in Animal Food, the National Research Council (NRC) and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) recommend the following maximum tolerable levels of arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead in (complete) dog food:

With these figures in mind, the levels reported in the Clean Label Project report may, at first glance, seem highly disturbing. However, the devil is in the details… and decimal places.
When we convert the results above from parts per billion (ppb) to parts per million (ppm), we see that these levels are actually well below the maximum tolerable levels (MTLs) recommended by the FDA.

It is worth noting that the MTLs set by the NRC and AAFCO are largely based on studies that include feed used in farm animal production, and there have been relatively few studies focused entirely on safe levels of these contaminants for cats and dogs.
“How would chronic consumption of these contaminants at really high levels affect a dog? We don’t know,” said Dr Wakshlag. “A solution would be for pet food companies to regularly test their products for toxins and report the results to consumers,” he added. “But extensive analyses take time and money.”
The Clean Label Project report makes reference to the fact that these figures are higher than those found in human food (which is true for some foods but not others), but research has shown that the levels found in dog food – even dry dog food – are considered safe for long-term consumption.1 Not just safe, but at the low end of maximum tolerable levels.
The highest levels in each category are higher than we would like to see in pet food; however, the average figures indicate that the levels of these heavy metals are well within the zone of safety for most of the foods tested. The results for each individual food tested have not been made available. In most cases, the average levels of heavy metals fell below the MTL for human consumption as well.2 Perhaps the title of their report needs to be updated for accuracy: “Safe Levels of Lead, Mercury, Arsenic, and Cadmium Found in Dry Dog Food.” Of course, this would make for decidedly less exciting news.

Within their report, there are startling comparisons made between dry dog food and human consumables. However, it is not made clear which ‘consumables’ are being used as a baseline, and there exists a huge range of heavy metals in human food and drink, depending on the item in question. 3,4 Contaminant risk is something that we should all be aware of, but the claims made in the CLP’s report are diabolical. Perhaps even more worrying is the number of websites, companies, and brands that have been reposting this content without fact-checking the data for themselves.

We do not wish to cast a negative light on the work being done by the Clean Label Project, as pushing for clean practices and transparency is a valiant goal, and something we should all be striving towards. However, it is a goal that should be reached on its own merits, not on the basis of exaggerated and erroneous statements.
Should We Be Worried?
It’s never a bad thing to shine a light on pet food standards, particularly as no federal regulations limit the exposure of dog food products to industrial and environmental chemicals. With new pet food brands popping up all the time, it can be difficult to know which ingredients and recipes are safest for our pets.
Although the dry foods assessed by the Clean Label Project are perfectly safe for canine consumption, that doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best option out there. Fresh/frozen foods are becoming increasingly popular due to their higher-quality ingredients and less intensive production methods. This does not, however, inherently mean they are safer or healthier than other forms of dog food, and we should always cast a critical eye over the ingredients panel. While there may be many reasons to consider moving away from dry kibble – higher levels of carbohydrates, by-products, and lack of enrichment – for now, heavy metal contamination is not one of them.
Based on the research and observations of Dr. Wakshlag’s team, one thing is certain: if you want complete transparency about the ingredients and contaminant levels in your dog’s food, be prepared to pay for it.
“If you want this kind of information, then expect your bag of dog food to go up $3 or $4 a bag, because that’s what it’s going to cost to do these tests.”

Why The “Fake News”?
Given that the figures reported by the CLP report are well within the safe zone for pet food, we can’t help but wonder why the incredibly misleading statement about “Extremely High Levels” of heavy metals was made. A fear tactic? Miscommunication? A misinterpretation of that pesky decimal place? Or perhaps they are hoping to garner support for their clean living initiative.
It goes without saying – or at least it should – that we should always be aiming for as few contaminants as possible, something that the Clean Label Project hopes to foster through the creation of their CLP Clean 16 and CLP Certification. This initiative aims to highlight products across various categories, including protein powder, coffee, snacks, and dog food, with the lowest levels of contaminants, and achieving CLP Purity Status is sure to be a feather in any brand’s cap.
We reached out to the Clean Label Project for clarification and received the following response:
“Our conclusions are derived exclusively from the data itself. The data – when interpreted with even a modest degree of technical literacy – indicates levels so markedly elevated that they would be considered detrimental to virtually any biological organism.”
However, there was no further explanation as to how they arrived at the conclusion that the levels found were “extremely” high, despite being well below the levels of safety for animal – and most human – consumption.
Whilst we agree that there needs to be more research into determining specific MTLs for pet animal species, there is nothing in the current data that indicates any cause for immediate concern. Yes, we need to ensure we are making the best and safest choices for our pets, but don’t forget to do your own research, look beyond the headlines, and don’t believe everything you read.
The Rocky Mountains are breathtaking in winter, but beneath their beauty lies a harsh and unforgiving wilderness that tests every living creature within it. Snow blankets the ground in thick silence, temperatures drop without warning, and survival becomes a daily fight against the cold. For one loyal dog named Rocky, this frozen landscape became an unexpected battleground. Lost and alone, far from home, he faced conditions that would challenge even the strongest animals, beginning a desperate journey that no one saw coming.
Rocky, a Labrador boxer mix with warm eyes and an eager spirit, was never meant to face the Rocky Mountains alone. He and his owner, Steven Ma, were in the middle of a cross-country move from New Jersey to California. It was supposed to be a new beginning. A fresh chapter. Along the way, Steven decided to take a short skiing break in Colorado, trusting that Rocky was safe with a dog walker.
But on December 28th, everything changed.
Somehow, Rocky slipped away near the small mountain town of Montezuma. One moment, he was under care. The next, he was gone, swallowed by a vast landscape of towering pines and deep snow.
43 Days Alone in the Wild
Winter in the Rockies is not gentle. Temperatures plunge. Snow piles high. Food is scarce. For a domestic dog, survival seems almost impossible.
Yet Rocky endured.
For 43 long days, he navigated frozen trails and quiet forests. He likely searched for familiar scents at first. The smell of Steven’s jacket. The sound of a car door closing. The echo of his own name being called. When none of it came, instinct must have taken over.
Experts often say animals are more resilient than we realize. Rocky proved it.
He would have needed to find water beneath layers of ice and snow. Shelter from wind that cuts through fur. Small scraps of food wherever he could. Each night alone must have been filled with unfamiliar sounds. Rustling branches. Distant wildlife. The hollow silence of winter.
Still, he kept going.
A breakthrough came when Rocky appeared on a security camera outside an empty rental property near Montezuma. Thin. Wandering. But alive.
That small glimpse sparked hope.
Members of Summit Lost Pet Rescue quickly mobilized. Volunteers braved the cold, tracking sightings and setting humane traps. They followed every lead. Each blurry image and paw print mattered.
Finally, after weeks of uncertainty, Rocky was found.
When he was safely brought in, the toll of those 43 days was clear. He had lost about 24 pounds. His body showed the strain of survival. But his eyes still held light. He was exhausted, yet unmistakably the same loyal dog who had once set out on a cross-country journey.
The reunion with Steven was filled with relief. After fearing the worst, he was holding his dog again. Rocky’s tail wagged. His body leaned in close. It was the kind of moment that makes everything else fade away.
Today, Rocky is recovering. With warmth, regular meals, and the comfort of home, he is slowly regaining strength. Each pound restored is a reminder of how far he has come.
His story is not just about getting lost. It is about endurance. About instinct. About the quiet strength animals carry within them.
Rocky’s 43 days in the mountains could have ended very differently. Instead, they ended with hope, gratitude, and a reunion that proves just how tough and resourceful our companions can be.

The Amazon River is vast, powerful, and often unforgiving, even to the wildlife that calls it home. One exhausted jaguar learned that the hard way after spending eight grueling hours trapped in its relentless current. Known for their strength and confidence in water, jaguars are natural swimmers who can cross wide rivers with ease. But this was not a routine crossing. This was a desperate fight to survive. When Brazilian authorities finally reached the struggling cat, they quickly realized this was far more than a simple rescue.
When Brazilian authorities reached the exhausted animal, they realized this was no ordinary rescue. The jaguar’s golden eyes were heavy. Its body trembled from fatigue. Every breath seemed labored.
Once safely brought to shore, veterinarians made a heartbreaking discovery. Embedded in the jaguar’s head were 30 lead pellets. Someone had intentionally shot this magnificent creature.
The injuries explained everything. The confusion. The weakness. The desperate hours spent fighting the current. What should have been an easy swim had turned into a life-or-death struggle.
Despite the trauma, the jaguar showed remarkable resilience. Even in pain, it remained alert. Its instincts were still there. Its spirit had not been broken.
At the rehabilitation center, a dedicated team began working carefully and quickly. They treated the wounds. They monitored swelling and infection. They gave the jaguar a quiet, safe place to rest.
Day by day, signs of strength returned. The cat began eating again. Its posture improved. The fierce presence that defines a jaguar slowly resurfaced.
This rescue represents more than one animal’s survival. Jaguars across the Brazilian Amazon face constant threats. Habitat loss and human conflict continue to push them into dangerous situations. Studies estimate that around 300 jaguars are killed or displaced each year in the region and nearby areas.
There is progress, though. Decades ago, before protective laws were enforced, an estimated 15,000 jaguars were hunted. The difference today reflects growing awareness and stronger conservation efforts. Still, each individual life matters deeply.
This particular jaguar’s story is a reminder of both cruelty and compassion. Someone tried to silence a symbol of the rainforest. Instead, a team of rescuers stepped in and gave it another chance.
Soon, once its wounds are fully healed, the jaguar is expected to return to the wild. Back to the dense green canopy. Back to the riverbanks where it belongs.
Its journey from suffering to safety offers hope. Not just for one animal, but for an entire species fighting to survive.

What began as an ordinary autumn stroll through the quiet countryside of Târgu Frumos, Romania, quickly turned into a moment that would change two tiny lives forever. As a woman walked along a familiar rural path near her home, surrounded by open fields and scattered signs of neglect, something unusual caught her attention. A worn cardboard box sat alone in the grass, damp from recent rain and partially sunken into the soft earth. At first, it blended into the landscape of discarded trash. But this box was not empty.
At first glance, it looked like more illegal dumping. Sadly, that was nothing new in the area. But days later, after cold winds and steady rain swept through the fields, the woman passed by again. This time, the box moved.
Inside were two small puppies, their fur damp and clumped together, their bodies trembling as they tried to crawl over the edge. They were barely more than babies. Fragile. Exposed. Alone in the biting cold.
The sight was heartbreaking. The woman immediately contacted ROLDA UK, an organization devoted to rescuing and rehoming Romanian street dogs. She knew these puppies would not survive much longer without help.
Rescuers arrived quickly and gently lifted the tiny sisters from the box. Their little paws were icy. Their bodies felt thin beneath their soaked fur. They were weak, but still quietly clinging to each other for comfort.
“They were extremely small, cold and fragile,” ROLDA UK founder Dana Costin shared. “Once placed indoors, wrapped in warmth and given food, they began to settle. They were exhausted rather than outwardly anxious. Being placed in a quiet room alongside gentle cats helped them calm down and feel secure.”
From Cold and Fear to Comfort and Love
Safe inside, the puppies were given names that suited their delicate spirits: Letti and Lisette.
The first hours were all about warmth. Soft blankets replaced wet cardboard. A heated room replaced the open field. For the first time in days, maybe longer, their tiny bodies could finally relax.
They slept deeply at first, pressed tightly together. It was clear they drew strength from one another. Even in the worst conditions, they had not let go.
Veterinarians examined them carefully. Despite their rough start, they were fighters. With proper nutrition, gentle care, and medical support, their energy slowly returned. Their eyes grew brighter. Their tails began to wag.
As they gained strength, rescuers moved them to a facility where other dogs were recovering and waiting for homes. There, Letti and Lisette learned how to play. They discovered toys. They experienced the simple joy of running across safe ground.
Still, no matter how many new friends they met, they always circled back to each other.
“They are so closely bonded,” Costin said. “They really do adore each other.”
Staff noticed how Letti would check on Lisette if she wandered too far. Lisette, in turn, would curl up beside her sister at every nap. Their bond had been forged in hardship, and it only grew stronger in safety.
Thankfully, they never had to face separation. A family saw their story and understood that these sisters belonged together. They opened their home to both puppies, ensuring they would continue side by side for the rest of their lives.
Now, instead of shivering in a damp box, Letti and Lisette wake up in a warm home filled with soft beds and loving hands. They have stability. They have safety. Most importantly, they have each other.
Their journey from abandonment to belonging is a quiet reminder of how quickly compassion can change a life. What began as a forgotten box in a field became the start of a beautiful new chapter.

If you are like me, you have noticed two things about dog food commercials. One, they all claim to provide complete, balanced nutrition for your dog. Two, they always tell you how rich in protein they are. Some dog foods are up to 30% or more protein nowadays.
First, let’s be real. How can a bag of dog food be complete, balanced nutrition for every dog on the planet? They are all different with different nutritional needs. That would be like saying all humans could eat the same diet and stay healthy.
And then there’s the protein claim. When you watch those commercials, you start to believe protein (and a lot of it!) is the most important thing for your dog. But that is also not true. Some dogs need a lot less protein due to health issues. Others need more. Plus, how do you know that food really has that much protein in it?

How important is protein for your dog?
Protein is an extremely important part of a dog’s diet. The key is…how do you tell how much protein is in a pet food? Labels are misleading.
In my blog, I write about misleading food labels. How do I know what’s really in a food? I read research papers. I pick brands that have actual people willing to talk to me about their products. I find people who have more knowledge on the subject than I do, and I talk to them and attend their classes. Then I pass my education on. (Read the full blog here.)
Proteins provide amino acids, which are the building blocks for cells. They are incorporated into most of the body functions from healing to growth, even thought and mood.
Too much protein can be bad, correct?
Too much of anything can be bad, and some disease processes make excessive protein intake really bad. Our bodies have fail-safes to eliminate excesses, but why would we create a difficult situation by choice?
Same with too little protein?
Too little protein can also really affect the fluid balance in the body. For example, liver failure (the liver is responsible for the production of proteins used by the blood) can cause a decrease in protein levels in the blood, which allows fluids to escape from the circulatory system and cause ascites (abdominal fluid distension). You know the footage that we see of starving children in other countries that have swollen bellies? One reason for that is that they are not getting enough protein because they are starving, and their bodies are not able to maintain the fluids inside the bloodstream, which leaks out into the abdominal space. This can happen with any animal.
So, how do you know how much your dog should be getting?
There have been established numbers for the percentage of protein, and if I remember correctly, it varies by stage of life, etc. I think that the last I heard, the diet should be made up of a minimum of 20%, but again….labels can mislead. The harder question is how you know your dog is getting that much protein. If you have questions, always consult your veterinarian.
Will the amount my dog needs change as he ages?
Yes, this is a good question for your vet. He or she knows your dog and has specific guidelines for her. Older pets might have kidney or liver issues, which can directly affect the protein requirements.
Can dogs really get the protein they need from dry kibble?
I have had many patients who never eat anything but dry kibble and live long, healthy lives. I always recommend choosing a diet that I personally have reviewed the R&D on. I never pick brands that are advertised on big budgets because I think that too much of the R&D budget is clearly being wasted on national TV ad campaigns. I know that it sounds self-serving, but if a diet must market itself for sale in a vet office, it means that the primary consumer is an educated one, and the manufacturer must be more careful about what they offer.
