    iGaming technology provider Gaming Innovation Group (GiG) has announced a new agreement for its platform to support Goldenpark‘s entry into the regulated online market in Ontario. This expansion builds upon their already existing partnership and marks Goldenpark’s first venture outside of the Iberian peninsula.

    Although the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR) expressed its support towards the approval of the Chamber of Deputies regarding Bill 3626/2023. Moreover, it issued a statement highlighting the need to make some changes in the legislation.

    According to the entity, if the text is approved in its current form, the new law will make it impossible for companies to create competitive and attractive products for players since the prizes will be lower than those offered in the illegal market.

    The project as it is currently presented, according to the IBJR, leads operators to desist from obtaining a state license and paying taxes since they will find themselves in an irregular market where legalized operators will find it impossible to compete.

    Reiterating that their concerns have not been addressed by both the Executive and Legislative Branches, the members of the Institute warn that they are reevaluating possible investments in the country, not only in betting but also in sponsorship, where they are an important source of income for most clubs.

    “For the markets to succeed, maximizing public revenues and protecting the integrity of sports, betting, and the fight against money laundering, Brazil must change course and take the following measures: extend the duration of the operating license, readjust tax rates, adjust inspection fees, adjust licensing, as well as review the calculation of income tax withholding,” the statement reads.

    “Fortunately, there is still time to implement a policy that aligns the interests of the Brazilian society, the government, the consumers, and the companies that make up the national gaming and betting ecosystem”, the entity led by André Gelfi concluded.

    The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board released Thursday its 16th Annual Diversity Report, providing a description of each casino’s activities related to the implementation of their diversity plans and the action taken by the entities to enhance the representation of diverse groups in the gaming industry. 

    The Diversity Report displayed the following key figures:

    • Pennsylvania’s 17 casinos collectively employed 15,461 persons at the close of the state fiscal year of 2022-2023, which is up 4.3% from last year.
    • 41% of those employed are racial minorities while 42% are female.
    • 13,863 of those employees (90%) are residents of Pennsylvania.
    • Casinos spent $838,378,181 in 2022-2023 with other businesses for construction and non-construction expenses.

    Furthermore, the report showed facilities located in Philadelphia metro areas employ more minorities than any other, with Rivers Casino Philadelphia employing 64% minorities, the most of any casino in the state. However, Harrah’s Philadelphia is the only casino that employs more African Americans (40%) than Caucasians (39%). Here’s a breakdown of workforce minorities in the Philadelphia metro area:

    • Rivers Casino Philadelphia: 64%
    • Live! Casino Philadelphia: 63%
    • Harrah’s Philadelphia: 62%
    • Valley Forge Casino: 61%
    • Parx Casino Bensalem: 48%

    Meanwhile, other highlights show Mount Airy Casino and Rivers Casino Pittsburgh showed the most improvement in diversity numbers, increasing their diversity levels by 5% and 4%, respectively.

    For its part, Parx Casino Bensalem, the top-grossing casino in the state, made the most charitable donations to the community, totaling $8.7 million

    The land-based casino industry in Pennsylvania consists of six racetrack (Category 1) casinos, five stand-alone (Category 2) casinos, two resort (Category 3) casinos and four mini-casinos (Category 4).  Pennsylvania casinos and the other types of Board-regulated gaming generated over $2.3 billion in tax revenue during the 2022/2023 State Fiscal Year.

    Chilean Chamber of Deputies continued with the vote in particular of the bill that seeks to regulate the online sector and, in its most recent session, approved that iGaming platforms that have operated illegally in the 12 months prior to the application for the license will not be authorized by the Superintendence of Gaming Casinos (SCJ).

    Such prohibition for the granting of operating licenses for the online sector is outlined in Article 13 (i) of the bill and was included in the proposal of the Chilean Executive. During the session, the directive was supported by the Undersecretary of Finance, Heidi Berner.

    The text reads: “[It will be] cause for rejection to be part of a business group that, through any of its entities, has operated a betting platform without the due operation license, or without the certification that authorizes to operate according to this law, or advertised or offered its services in Chile, in the last 12 months prior to the application”.

    It also adds that “this provision will affect all the platforms that currently operate illegally in the country”.

    The legislative provision warns that “the catalog of conducts or actions to determine that a platform has operated, advertised or offered its services in Chile includes the following:

    • Having allowed the crediting of users’ accounts or the payment of bets in legal tender.
    • Using the media to advertise or promote its services in the national territory, as well as operating under a name that uses references to the country, its territory, and publicly known or historical characters.
    • Sponsoring, endorsing, or having similar contracts with persons, entities, and/or events carried out in the national territory.
    • Operating through a company incorporated in the country.
    • Offering services through a web domain ending in dot cl (.cl).
    • Using the national emblem or the presence of symbols that contain elements intimately linked to the country.
    • To mention or be duly regulated by the Superintendency or authorized by any other Chilean entity.
    • Using any means of payment authorized by the Commission for the Financial Market (CMF) or facilitating transfers and/or national bank deposits as a means of payment.

    Links with other jurisdictions

    Following the debate on Article 13, paragraph h was also approved, which defined that the SCJ will also not grant a license “to operating companies that are related or are part of a business group that operates in other jurisdictions without having authorization from the competent regulatory authority in such places, provided that they require administrative authorization to operate legally”.

    “They will also be rejected when having such authorization, they operate their services using software, equipment, systems, terminals, and instruments, provided by third parties that, in turn, provide these services to platforms that do not have authorization in the respective jurisdictions”, the authorities stated.

    In this context, the text adds, “the Superintendency shall maintain a list of all jurisdictions that require online gambling companies to be authorized to operate, and may request assistance from the agencies that oversee them in their respective countries”.

    Supreme Court Ruling

    During the session, reference was also made to the Supreme Court ruling that ordered an internet provider to block access to 23 online gambling sites, and Berner stated that the bill in question reaffirms that these online gambling platforms are illegal and that is why legislation is being passed to build a regulatory framework. 

    “The online gaming platforms are as illegal today as they were a couple of months ago when we started to process the indications and this is what I have always maintained. In fact, the Internal Revenue Service filed a lawsuit against them for engaging in clandestine trade and when it enabled digital services to pay VAT and these platforms assumed that they had to pay it, precisely because they were illegal, the Internal Revenue Service prevented them from continuing to do so through the simplified platform”, Berner explained.

    In addition, the Undersecretary of Finance said that they share the ruling and that “a law that allows for a more adequate regulation of this activity must be issued, as does Article 13, which has just been approved and which gives the Superintendence of Gaming Casinos the power to deny operating permits”.

    “This is totally consistent and is in line with the Supreme Court’s ruling, as are other norms proposed in this bill”, she concluded.

    The categorization of Young Professionals was based on the number of years they have been in the workforce, either within the range of one to four years or five to eight years. According to Career Companies Sweden, young professionals are individuals aged between 25 and 35 who have completed their academic education within the last one to eight years, marking the beginning of their professional careers.

    In July, the company posted a total revenue of GBP 307.3 million ($396.9 million) for the second quarter of the year, up 29% from the same period last year. However, taking away the earnings made from the Dutch market, the operator recorded a 1% increase, as the Netherlands played an important role in Q2 with revenues of GBP 63.6 million ($82.1 million).

    Crockfords Casino, which claims to be the UK’s oldest gaming venue, is at risk of shutting down. The casino’s owner, Malaysia’s Genting Group, has initiated a 30-day “consultation process” with its staff as it decides on the future of the 80 million pounds ($97 million) property, according to a report by Daily Mail.

    Crockford’s was established in 1828 in Mayfair by a working-class fishmonger William Crockford, who later became one of the wealthiest self-made men in England. As per the report, the casino employs around 100 people who are now facing potential redundancy. The venue, best known for its exclusive clientele of aristocracy and royalty, could be closing its doors for good as London fails to attract high-end tourists.

    Paul Willcock, president of Genting Casinos UK, in a statement to The Mail, said that Crockfords had been negatively impacted by “a combination of factors.” According to Willcock, London is at a “competitive disadvantage” compared with other international markets. He further pointed out that no decision would be made until the views of the casino’s staff members had been heard.

    Willcock said: “We highly value our employees, and we are committed to our duty of care to them. None of our other casinos are affected in any way by this process and we will not be commenting further while this consultation is underway.”

    In recent years, two high-end casinos in London, the Ritz Club and the Clermont, shut down owing to the lack of high rollers visiting the UK. John O’Reilly, the CEO of the UK’s biggest casino group, Grosvenor, in an earnings call last month, said that Middle Eastern high rollers, who have traditionally supplied London’s casinos with a stream of VIP revenues, were now choosing to visit Paris or Milan instead.

    This is partly the result of the British government scrapping the duty-free system for foreign visitors, or ‘tourist tax’, which allowed them to regain the 20% sales tax, known as value-added tax (VAT), on items purchased while in the UK. The system ended in 2021 when the UK officially left the European Union. Additionally, London’s high-end casinos have also been affected by the Gambling Commission’s 2020 decision to ban gambling with credit cards.

    Renderings have now been released for the upcoming Field of Light at Freedom Plaza, a sprawling light installation by designer Bruce Munro that is set to grace the site of a proposed casino in Midtown East.

    The project, financed by the Soloviev Group, owner of the vacant land, will feature 17,000 low-light, fiber-optic stemmed spheres that change colors, creating an enchanting landscape across six acres near the United Nations headquarters. The installation will debut this winter, welcoming the public for a free viewing experience, 6sqft reported.

    Field of Light is scheduled to be on display for a duration of 12 monthsThe Soloviev Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Soloviev Group, has allocated approximately $1.5 million to fund the light installation and oversee its maintenance, as reported by the New York Times. Michael Hershman, CEO of the Soloviev Group, characterized the installation as a “gift to New York.”

    The Soloviev Group is among several developers vying for one of up to three casino licenses to be made available in the New York City area. Earlier this year, the group unveiled plans for Freedom Plaza, a mixed-use development anchored by a partially subterranean casino operated by Mohegan.

    The proposed project also includes a 1,200-room hotel, two residential towers featuring condominium and rental units (with some designated as affordable housing), over four acres of public green space, and a human rights museum housing sections of the Berlin Wall.

    It’s worth noting that the initial proposal mentioned a giant Ferris wheel for the site, but this idea has since been abandoned, as reported by the New York Times.

    As many as a dozen casino operators could ultimately vie for the three downstate casino licenses New York state gaming regulators are set to award. The frontrunners for two of the permits are believed to be Genting and MGM Resorts, operators of Resorts World New York City in Queens and Empire City Casino in Yonkers, respectively. The licenses would allow the properties, currently limited to slot machines only, to expand their gaming offerings.

    Virginia’s tax revenue from sports betting and casinos has outpaced the forecasts made by fiscal analysts four years ago, at the time when the state was considering expanding its range of legalized gambling.

    Virginia Lottery figures indicate that tax revenue from sports betting more than doubled during fiscal year 2023, surging from $27 million in the previous year to an impressive $67 million, The Virginia Mercury reported. In contrast, a state gambling study conducted four years ago had anticipated annual tax revenue of up to $55 million from sports betting once the industry reached full maturity.

    The substantial revenue increase can be largely attributed to a recent tax policy adjustment that disallowed established sports betting companies such as FanDuel and DraftKings from deducting the expenses associated with free bet promotions and wagering bonuses from their state tax obligations. However, the total sports betting volume in Virginia also experienced growth, rising from approximately $4.2 billion in fiscal year 2022 to $5.1 billion in fiscal year 2023.

    Virginia lawmakers endorsed the legalization of sports betting in 2020, with digital sports betting platforms launching in the state early in 2021.

    Meanwhile, Virginia’s nascent casino industry, still in the construction phase, also appears to be outperforming initial expectations, as per Lottery figures. Despite several casinos operating from temporary locations while their larger facilities are under construction, they have demonstrated robust financial performance.

    The temporary Hard Rock Casino in Bristol, which commenced operations in July 2022, reported $157 million in net gambling revenue during its inaugural year, surpassing the $130 million initially projected by the state study for a fully established casino, the report said. This resulted in nearly $26 million in tax revenue, distributed between local governments and a state fund dedicated to school construction and upgrades.

    Rivers Casino Portsmouth, which began operations in January and was initially projected to generate $167 million in annual gambling revenue, had already accrued $120 million in net revenue by the end of June, coinciding with the state’s fiscal year conclusion. The Portsmouth facility contributed approximately $17.9 million in tax revenue.

    The recently inaugurated temporary Caesars casino in Danville recorded $31 million in gambling revenue during May and June alone. In contrast, the 2019 state study had forecasted annual gambling revenue of $190 million for a Danville casino.

    Another casino project is underway in Norfolk, while Richmond is set to vote again this fall on a casino proposal after an initial ballot referendum in 2021 failed to gain approval.

    As gambling opportunities expand in Virginia, policymakers have instituted regulations to allocate a portion of the revenue for assisting individuals dealing with gambling-related problems. In fiscal year 2023, nearly $2.6 million was designated for problem gambling resources, with a significant portion directed toward local community service boards already engaged in addressing addiction and mental health issues.

    During Tuesday’s meeting, Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services Commissioner Nelson Smith estimated that approximately 2% of Virginia’s population could be affected by problem gambling.

Coming full circle, he started his gaming career with Jumer’s Casino & Hotel, which is now Bally’s Quad Cities. He holds an M.B.A. from Georgia State University. 

    For her part, Barlow has over a decade of experience building and managing responsible gaming and corporate social responsibility programs for companies in the gaming industry. She is described by Bally’s as an experienced executive with a demonstrated history of developing responsible gaming and community engagement programs that comply with regulatory requirements and enhance local communities.

    Prior to joining Bally’s, she led the development and execution of Rush Street Interactive’s (RSI) corporate social responsibility strategy, including the continued implementation of the RSI’s responsible gaming initiatives. As part of her role, Barlow worked with C-suite executives and external industry experts to promote the expansion of RSI’s diversity, equity, and inclusion program, as well as its CSR programs, and develop the strategy to create its first community engagement and employee volunteerism program.

    Barlow is the previous co-chairwoman and is now a committee member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for Global Gaming Women, and is currently Chairwoman of the Responsible Gaming Committee for the National Council on Problem Gambling, a Board member of the Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health, and a committee member of African Americans in Gaming. She has an M.B.A from Roosevelt University in Chicago and will be based in Bally’s headquarters in Providence, Rhode Island.

    Luis Heredia, President of the Macau Hotel Association, expressed expectations that hotel occupancy rates in Macau will not only match but surpass pre-pandemic levels during the upcoming National Day Golden Week.

    “We are very optimistic, hoping that all conditions are favorable for travel, and the hotels are ready to welcome tourists and provide quality services,” Heredia said in an interview with Macau News Agency (MNA), as reported by Macau Business.

    Wong Suk Yan, Chair of the association, also provided insights to local media, stating that casino resorts in the Cotai area are poised to achieve full occupancy during the festive period. Hotels situated on the Macau Peninsula are expected to achieve occupancy rates ranging from 60 percent to 70 percent, the report said.

    Regarding hotel room pricing, budget hotels are anticipated to offer rates within the range of MOP1500 ($186.18) to MOP 2000 ($248.24), while larger gaming resorts are expected to have rates ranging from MOP3000 ($372.36) to MOP4,000 ($496.48).

    In a recent report from J.P. Morgan, analysts expressed assurance that local casino resort rooms will experience full bookings once more during the upcoming National Day Golden Week, consistent with historical patterns.

    The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has forecasted a daily average of over 100,000 tourist arrivals in the Special Administrative Region (SAR) for that period.

    Macau experienced a notable surge in visitor arrivals in August, according to data released by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC). The figures revealed that 3,221,691 (3.2 million) visitors arrived during August, marking the highest monthly count since the same month in 2019.

    This development is particularly significant as it represents the first time since December 2019 that Macau has hosted over three million tourists in a single month, before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    An earlier report by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) said Macau casinos’ gross gaming revenue (GGR) increased by more than 686% in August from the previous year to MOP17.2 billion patacas ($2.17 billion). August’s total was also up from the GGR posted in July, which stood at MOP16.7 billion ($2.1 billion).

    The figures represent about 71% of pre-pandemic levels, driven by increased tourism levels during the summer vacation period. The city reported 2.8 million visitor arrivals in July, which has returned to 78% of pre-Covid levels, according to the latest official data.

It was during that time that I dove deep into the intricate relationship between casinos and sports in a company overseeing seven diverse projects. I also spent a certain time consulting traditional offline casinos and betting companies. Furthermore, I gained valuable experience in arbitrage betting.

    This unique background has played a crucial role in our current endeavours at SOFTSWISS, where we are developing a groundbreaking product that is successfully competing with market incumbents.

    What currently poses the greatest challenges for betting operators?

    Within the iGaming industry, two core objectives take centre stage: player attraction and player retention. In this context, two pivotal aspects demand our attention.

    Firstly, if we take a closer look at the strategies and products of B2B companies, it becomes quite evident that many of them grapple with truly understanding what players really need. Secondly, in the world of betting, it’s not just about offering a product, it’s about making sure that product actively engages players.

    Another effective approach to engage players is by introducing tournaments, quests, and jackpots that encourage friendly competition among players. These diverse tools can be harnessed to incentivise players to participate in various activities. For instance, the operator might announce that all bets placed on the International  2023 will contribute to a specific jackpot. This strategy motivates players to actively partake in these actions, enhancing their overall experience.

    The Palazzo casino floor at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas is set to debut a high-limit gaming lounge on September 29th. The gaming area, designed by Wimberly Interiors, will stretch across 15,000 square feet. It will have two distinctive curated spaces, one dedicated to table games and the other to high-end popular slots.

    The gaming lounge will feature sixty-seven of the latest slot cabinets, offering a wide range of games from traditional to video games to single and multi-hand poker, with some games offering jackpots exceeding $2 million. 

    It will also have eighteen table games including blackjack, commission-free Tiger Baccarat, roulette, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, and craps. Additionally, its Ultimate Texas Hold’em games are linked to the resort’s Millionaire Progressive. The Venetian says that the popular side bet has made eleven millionaires since its inception.



    The Palazzo Casino, Las Vegas

    The lounge will house a bar with bar-top machines, cashiers, restrooms, and private casino host access exclusive to the space. The resort’s expert mixologist, Andrew Pollard, will unveil a ‘special cocktail program just for the players in the space.’ 

    The Venetian on its website notes that the mixologist drew inspiration from Italy for the menu. It will give guests the experience of hand-crafted drinks that “embody the artfully designed venue.” Ornate chandeliers, marble details, and curated art accent the lounge. Self-pay will be available on all games for expedited jackpot payments.

    Patrick Nichols, president and chief executive officer of The Venetian Resort Las Vegas, in a press statement, said: “We designed our high-limit lounge with the sole focus of enhancing the player experience. We really wanted this lounge to be an elevated but not exclusive destination for our players and a statement of The Venetian Resort’s commitment to invest in our casino guests continually.”

    He added: “This is the next step forward in the resort’s multi-year transformation and will provide an artfully designed setting that reflects our vision and exceeds the expectations of our casino guests.”

    The new high-limit gaming space is part of The Venetian’s renovation plans, which will see the resort undergo a $1 billion redevelopment.
