Super Bowl Live Updates | 49ers get field goal with 1:53 left, lead 19-16

    [ad_1]

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Live updates from the Super Bowl in Las Vegas:

Moody makes amends with go-ahead kick

Jake Moody became the first kicker to make two 50-plus field goals in a Super Bowl –- and this one might be enough to give the 49ers the Super Bowl.

His 53-yarder with 1:53 left gave San Francisco a 19-16 lead. Moody made up for a missed extra point.

But Patrick Mahomes will get the ball. He’s shown what he can do in 13 seconds. Mahomes will have a lot more time now.

Chiefs stall in red zone, settle for tying field goal in 4th

    Big stop for the 49ers.

They kept the Chiefs out of the end zone even though they had first-and-goal at the 4, forcing a tying field goal with 5:46 left.

Both teams have missed opportunities, so in that way, it’s kind of evened out.

Now Brock Purdy can shed the quarterback-manager label or Patrick Mahomes will add to his extraordinary legacy.

    Stay tuned.

Brock Purdy’s TD pass puts 49ers ahead 16-13 in 4th quarter

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan went for it.

All Niners fans probably couldn’t believe it when he eschewed a field goal on fourth-and-3 early in the fourth quarter and converted it. San Francisco scored a touchdown to take a 16-13 lead.

    16-13?

The extra point was blocked, keeping the Chiefs within three. Could be huge.

San Francisco’s Jauan Jennings joined Nick Foles as the only players to throw a touchdown pass and catch one in a Super Bowl. Foles did it six years ago for the Eagles against the Patriots.

Brock Purdy needs another comeback win

49ers QB Brock Purdy is hoping to pull off his third playoff victory in a row while trailing in the second half.

He led the Niners on a late touchdown drive to beat the Packers and then erased a 24-7 halftime deficit to beat the Lions in the NFC championship.

The 49ers enter the fourth quarter against the Chiefs down 13-10, but are at Kansas City’s 42.

49ers have believers in the ‘books

The 49ers entered the fourth quarter trailing 13-10, but sportsbooks still believe in them. FanDuel Sportsbook made the Niners 1 1/2-point favorites after the end of the third quarter.

Mahomes, Chiefs finally connect, take 13-10 lead

One play after the 49ers had a punt bounce off one of their players and get recovered by Kansas City, Patrick Mahomes lofted a 16-yard pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the end zone to give the Chiefs a 13-10 lead in the Super Bowl.

Valdes-Scantling was almost universally loathed by Chiefs fans for much of the season. He dropped several passes at crucial moments, including one that may have cost them a game. And considering he was the highest-paid wide receiver on a group that struggled all season, he became an easy target for failing to live up to his contract.

But he had a big catch against Baltimore to help put away the AFC title game, and now has an even bigger one in the Super Bowl.

    San Francisco regretting missed chances

The 49ers had their chances to put away the Chiefs.

They might soon really regret it.

A punt bounced off the Niners’ Darrell Luter’s leg, and Kansas City’s Jaylen Watson recovered at San Francisco’s 16.

One play later, the Chiefs took their first lead of the game.

You can’t hand any team, but especially a Super Bowl champion, those kinds of breaks.

KC’s defense locks down in third quarter

Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are the headliners, but the Chiefs are in the Super Bowl largely because of their defense.

And did it show up in the third quarter.

They forced three 49ers three-and-outs, holding San Francisco to 3 yards.

Quarterback Brock Purdy is 4 for 12 for 17 yards since the start of the second quarter. Those game-management criticisms aren’t going away.

One bit of good news for SF: Deebo Samuel is back after limping earlier with a hamstring issue.

Chiefs make record 57-yard field goal, trail 49ers 10-6

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker made a 57-yard field goal with 5:01 left in the third quarter, breaking a Super Bowl record from… two quarters ago.

Jake Moody’s 55-yarder to open the scoring had been the longest in Super Bowl history, topping a 54-yarder by Buffalo’s Steve Christie.

The kick came moments after a shirtless fan ran onto the field during a third-and-11.

Beyoncé teases new music in Super Bowl ad

    Beyoncé is…. Back?

After a Verizon commercial starring Beyoncé aired during the Super Bowl ended with the superstar saying “They ready, drop the new music,” the question became — was she serious?

Later, a cryptic Instagram video with country iconography appeared on her page, teasing “act ii” on March 29. Beyoncé’s 2022 album “Renassiance” is frequently referred to as “Act I: Renaissance.”

49ers’ Samuel limps off with hamstring injury

49ers receiver Deebo Samuel limped off the field early in the third quarter of the Super Bowl.

San Francisco said it was a left hamstring injury and his return is questionable.

The Niners’ do-everything receiver went down on a third-down pass on San Francisco’s second drive of the third quarter. Trainers came out to attend to him before walking off under his own power. He went briefly to the injury tent.

The 49ers have struggled this season when Samuel has been hurt. They lost three straight games in October when he hurt his shoulder and struggled for most of a divisional round win against Green Bay after he hurt his other shoulder on the opening drive.

After Usher thrills, 49ers-Chiefs a slog in second half

Well, there was Usher. And Alicia Keys.

But not so much to see after halftime.

The Super Bowl is the NFL’s premier event, but the 49ers and Chiefs are playing like it’s the second game of the preseason. Penalties, punts and turnovers. Not exactly what the league wanted for the first big game in Las Vegas.

At least there were the multiple cutaways on the stadium screens to Taylor Swift.

Review: Usher delivers timeless, well-known hits

Usher emerged at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium for the 2024 Super Bowl halftime show seated on a throne, joined by a marching band and a trove of Vegas performers — but stayed its center.

It was an immediate confirmation of his position as the ideal halftime performer: one with timeless, well-known hits, masterful choreography, and a devoted audience, AP’s Music Writer Maria Sherman writes in her review.

What’s it like performing at halftime?

Suwasit Ritthiphon, clad in silver and black, was one of hundreds of people partying on the field during the halftime show. A longtime fan of Usher, Ritthiphon, 43, said he couldn’t believe his luck when his application for a spot on the field was accepted.

“My heart was beating. It was exciting,” he said, flashing a smile. He described the experience of running through the tunnel and onto the field as “an opportunity of a lifetime.”

Usher rocks Vegas with help from Lil Jon, Ludacris

A steady stream of stars joined Usher during his 13-minute halftime show. H.E.R. took the field with a guitar solo, and he made a costume change into a purple and black sparkling suit with roller skates, which he used to glide in circles around the stage.

Lil Jon joined, starting with a rousing snippet of his “Turn Down for What” before Usher’s biggest, hit, “Yeah,” began blaring on the stadium speakers.

Lil Jon and Ludacris – with shoulder pads and big afro – recreated their roles on Usher’s 2004 recording of the song from the midfield stage as the R&B star danced amid a bedazzled crowd to close the show.

Alicia Keys, H.E.R. join Usher for halftime show

Alicia Keys joined Usher as a surprise guest during his halftime show, singing her “If I Ain’t Got You” while standing at a midfield piano that looked like a red hunk of abstract sculpture.

She then stood up and entangled with Usher as they sang their duet “My Boo,” with her dressed in sparkling red and in contrast with his sparkling white. The singer shed his shirt soon after.

Usher was also joined by a marching band on the field as he raced through both dance and slow jams including “U Don’t Have to Call.”

Usher opens halftime show in Vegas style

Usher has kicked off his halftime show in Vegas style – surrounded by a field full of showgirls and other showy dancers, he shed an extravagant feather cape as he stepped from a stage onto the field while singing his 2004 hit “Caught.”

It’s the first song in a medley of many from the R&B star as he tries to squeeze highlights from a 30-year career into 13 minutes.

Patrick Mahomes, the king of comebacks

Be careful about betting against Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

He is 7-1 in playoff games over the past five seasons after trailing by at least seven points.

All other QBs? They are 12-55.

The Chiefs are 4 1/2-point underdogs going into the second half, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

    No turf drama

One story of the first half was a nonstory.

Players didn’t slide around on the field as if it was ice like they did in last season’s Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.

Of course, that was before halftime when hundreds of fans danced on the turf as Usher performed.

Chiefs trail 49ers 10-3 at halftime, but comebacks are a specialty

This is why the Chiefs deferred after winning the coin toss.

KC trails 10-3 but will get the ball first to start the second half, giving them a chance to double up after finally getting on the scoreboard late in the second quarter with Harrison Butker’s 28-yarder.

The Chiefs are quite comfortable coming from behind. They have rallied from double-digit deficits to win two Super Bowls, including against San Francisco four years ago.

Patrick Mahomes has trailed in all four Super Bowls by double digits, yet he is 2-1.

The 49ers were the better team for most of the first half, but the combination of the Chiefs mounting a scoring drive and San Francisco blowing earlier opportunities to score has made this a game.

Andra Day all smiles after pregame performance

After Andra Day finished her Super Bowl pregame performance, the soul singer’s nerves are still getting the best of her.

The Grammy winner was all smiles after she performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing” ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers championship game Sunday at Allegiant Stadium.

“I’m excited but still feeling some nervousness,” said Day, who was a pregame performer along with Reba McEntire and Post Malone. McEntire sung the national anthem and Malone performed “America the Beautiful.”

Day said she’s happy with her performance, and relieved it’s over. She said her experience on the field was a “blur.”

“The trick is not to look at people’s faces,” she said. “I just see this one big blur. If I was to see faces, I would flip out.”

KC lucky to be within a score

The Chiefs are fortunate to be trailing 10-3 at halftime of the Super Bowl after making the same silly mistakes that caused them to lose five of eight games midway through the season.

The AFC champions were penalized five times for 50 yards. They fumbled three times but were lucky to lose only one of them. Justin Watson dropped a long pass for the team that led the NFL in drops this season. And there have been so many blown assignments up front that Patrick Mahomes, who is rarely sacked, has been brought down twice already.

The Chiefs get the ball to start the second half after winning the coin toss and deferring, and Andy Reid is one of the best coaches in the NFL at making halftime adjustments. But unless his players start to execute, nothing that Reid says or does in the locker room will matter.

Chiefs get field goal, but frustration mounting

The Chiefs are on the board with a 28-yard field goal from Harrison Butker with 20 seconds left before halftime.

The 49ers have done a nice job on Travis Kelce so far — even in the red zone, where he and the Chiefs are often so effective.

Kelce only has one catch for 1 yard on the day. On that last third down from the San Francisco 9, he lined up in the slot and was covered by safety Ji’Ayir Brown. Kelce appeared to swing an arm in frustration when Patrick Mahomes was taken down before being able to throw.

49ers get TD off trick play, lead 10-0

The San Francisco 49ers got tricky for the first touchdown of the Super Bowl.

Coach Kyle Shanahan dialed up a rare trick play that led to a TD pass from receiver Jauan Jennings to running back Christian McCaffrey.

Brock Purdy started the play with a lateral to the left side to Jennings, who immediately threw it back to the other side to McCaffrey, who had a convoy of blockers and ran in for a 21-yard TD to put San Francisco up 10-0.

McCaffrey has tied an NFL record with his seventh straight playoff game with at least 50 yards from scrimmage and a TD.

San Francisco has moved to a 7 1/2-point favorite on FanDuel’s live line after the spread was a good bit closer at the start of the game.

Taylor Swift chugs a drink, draws big applause

There has been plenty of Taylor Swift on the big screens of Allegiant Stadium, and during the last timeout, cameras caught her in a race to chug what appeared to be a beer in her suite.

Swift was the first to finish, and she triumphantly slammed the cup down as the video cut away to other fans. But not before an appreciative roar rippled through the stadium.

If only the Chiefs were able to move the ball as successfully as she downed her drink. Their offense has gone nowhere in the first half of their Super Bowl showdown with the 49ers.

‘Bennifer’ is back for Super Bowl ad

“Bennifer” has teamed up with Dunkin for a second Super Bowl in a row.

In an ad for the Massachusetts-based chain, Ben Affleck enlists Matt Damon, Tom Brady and more to visit Jennifer Lopez at work and give a “DunKings” performance full of Boston pride. Rappers Jack Harlow and Fat Joe also make an appearance in the celebrity-filled commercial.

49ers’ Dre Greenlaw injures Achilles tendon running onto field

49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was carted to the locker room midway through the second quarter after injuring his left Achilles tendon in a bizarre moment.

He began to sprint onto the field for the start of a defensive possession when he stumbled, fell and needed medical attention.

Greenlaw already had made an impact in this game with three tackles when he went out.

Travis Kelce bumps into, yells at Andy Reid

Travis Kelce bumped into coach Andy Reid and yelled at him after teammate Isiah Pacheco’s red-zone fumble in the second quarter. Frustration is clearly building for KC, which still trails 3-0.

From SNL to Super Bowl Sunday

In an ad for Hellmann’s, Kate McKinnon makes an unusual discovery: her cat can talk. Well, sort of. Her furry friend can say one word, “may-ow” — which skyrockets her to celebrity status and causes a mayonnaise-buying frenzy. The “Mayo Cat” becomes so famous that she even dates (and soon dumps) Pete Davidson.

49ers-Chiefs a defensive struggle so far

For all the talk of stars Patrick Mahomes, Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey and Travis Kelce, it’s defenses that have had the edge early in the Super Bowl. The teams have combined for one score on the first six drives.

Kansas City looked to be on the verge of a breakthrough when Mahomes connected on a 53-yard pass to Mecole Hardman to get the Chiefs to the 9. But Isiah Pacheco lost a fumble on the next play with Javon Hargrave recovering.

Kansas City had gained only 16 yards in the first quarter and now has gone nine straight possessions in the postseason without a point, dating to the AFC title game.

San Francisco has had its own issues with McCaffrey losing a fumble on the opening drive and Trent Williams committing two penalties to stall the second possession.

    49ers’ Moody kicks record 55-yard f

    ield goal, SF leads 3-0

Jake Moody made a Super Bowl-record 55-yard field goal just 12 seconds into the second quarter to put the San Francisco 49ers on top 3-0.

Buffalo’s Steve Christie held the record with a 54-yarder against Dallas in Super Bowl 28.

This could be a confidence booster for Moody, who missed field goals in the past two playoff games.

49ers getting in their own way

The 49ers are their own worst enemies midway through the first quarter. Christian McCaffrey fumbled on their first drive, and then San Francisco lost yardage on three consecutive plays — two penalties and a run by Deebo Samuel.

Then as the 49ers were about to punt, they were penalized another 5 yards because of a false start.

That kept the game scoreless even though the Niners have outgained the Kansas City Chiefs 84-6 in yardage.

49ers’ strong opening drive spoiled by McCaffrey fumble

San Francisco opened the game with an impressive drive but wasted the opportunity to score when Christian McCaffrey fumbled at Kansas City’s 27-yard line.

Leo Chenal knocked the ball out of McCaffrey’s hands, and fellow Chief George Karlaftis recovered.

The Chiefs had a turnover ratio of minus-11 in the regular season, among the NFL’s worst.

This is the fourth time since 2000 that the game’s opening drive ended in a turnover.

The Chiefs didn’t do anything with the turnover, going three-and-out. That ended a streak of eight straight playoff games in which Kansas City scored on its opening possession, an NFL record.

‘He Gets Us,’ Dove and M&M’s among early ads

“He Gets Us” returned to the Super Bowl again this year. The campaign, which is backed by a group of wealthy Christian donors, aired an ad with the message, “Jesus didn’t teach hate. He washed feet,” in the first quarter of the game.

    Other early ads:

Dove’s ad begins seemingly whimsically showing young girls having mishaps playing sports to the tune of “It’s a Hard Knock Life.” But the ad cuts starkly to a girl looking self-consciously in the mirror. The message: low body-confidence leads to girls quitting sports, not the mishaps.

Hall of Famers Dan Marino, Bruce Smith and Terrell Owens never got a Super Bowl ring, but M&M’s and Scarlett Johansson present them with “Almost Champions” rings in a Super Bowl ad.

    Gronk misses wide-right

In a pregame promotion for gambling site FanDuel, NFL legend Rob Gronkowski missed a 25-yard field goal for a second year in a row.

That means fans who bet against Gronkowski are set to win a share of $10 million in FanDuel Bonus Bets.

    Chiefs win the toss

A huge roar went up when Kansas City won the toss. Either Chiefs fans felt that was unusually crucial in this game — or a lot of people had bet on heads.

KC deferred its choice to the second half, meaning the 49ers get the ball first.

    Reba sails through national anthem

Reba McEntire made quick but majestic work of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The “Queen of Country” sang the national anthem moments before kickoff, backed by a recorded track of a country band with a horn section. Flag-bearing service members stood behind her, a huge U.S. flag covered most of the field, and military jets flew over Allegiant Stadium as she sang.

She got through the song in about 1 minute 40 seconds. That’s a good 10 seconds longer than the over-under from oddsmakers, but still the quickest version of the anthem at the Super Bowl since Kelly Clarkson sang it 12 years ago.

  • Woman who walked inside Lakewood Church with gun shot, killed by off-duty officers, Chief Finner says

Woman who walked inside Lakewood Church with gun shot, killed by off-duty officers, Chief Finner says

    [ad_1]

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said initial reports indicated shots were fired near Lakewood Church on Sunday.

HOUSTON — A woman who walked inside Lakewood Church on Sunday with a long rifle and began shooting was shot and killed by two off-duty officers, according to Houston Police Department Chief Troy Finner.

The woman had a child with her, who Finner said was either 4 or 5 years old. The child was shot in the exchange of gunfire between the woman and the off-duty officers, Finner said. The child was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The relationship between the child and the woman is unknown.

A man in his 50s, who Finner described as an innocent bystander, was shot in his leg.

    What happened

Finner said the woman, who appeared to be between 30 to 35 years old, entered Lakewood Church with the child from the west side of the parking lot at about 1:53 p.m. She was wearing a trench coat and a backpack and armed with a long rifle, Finner said.

“Once she entered, at some point, she began to fire,” Finner said.

The two off-duty officers who were working an extra job at Lakewood Church spotted the woman and shot back, killing her, Finner said. One of the off-duty officers is a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission agent who is 38 years old with four years of service. The other off-duty officer is an HPD officer who is 28 years old with two years of service.

Finner said he couldn’t confirm if the child and the man were shot by the off-duty officers or the woman.

“I don’t want to speculate on that, but what I would say is if it was, unfortunately, and that female, that suspect put that baby in danger, I’m going to put that blame on her,” Finner said.

Finner said before the woman died, she mentioned she had a bomb. A bomb squad searched the church along with her vehicle and backpack and found no evidence of explosives.

Finner said she also sprayed some substance. A HAZMAT team, decontamination team and rescue team checked the property to make sure there was no risk to the public.

“We’re going to take our time to ensure any issue, any risk we see is properly vetted,” Houston Fire Department Chief Sam Peña said. “Right now, I can safely say we have not found anything that is of concern to our community or to this location, but we’re going to take our time to ensure that we look at every aspect.”

This entire incident happened in between the English and Spanish services at Lakewood Church.

Pastor Joel Osteen stood beside Mayor John Whitmire, Finner and Peña as they updated the public about what happened at his church, and when it was his time to speak, he said he was devastated.

“We don’t understand why things happen,” Osteen said. “It could have been a lot worse.”

The Southwest Freeway service road near Lakewood Church was shut down for several hours while law enforcement investigated and made sure people who were inside the church were safe.

A reunification center was set up at a nearby Life Time Fitness for people who couldn’t find their loved ones.

The motive for the shooting is unknown.

The off-duty officers will be placed on administrative leave while an investigation into the shooting takes place.

    Witnesses reactions

A woman said she and others were escorted out of the church by several law enforcement agencies — including the FBI.

She said she was leaving the service and pastor Joel Osteen was greeting people on the second floor when she heard the shots. That’s when she said people started running.

As she was trying to get out, she said she saw a person pointing a gun while standing near the entrance to the church and that’s when she knew she needed to get away.

“I turned around and started running with the rest of the people,” she said. “We hid about 10 adults in a closet and there was one child in there.”

A woman from Florida said it was her first time at the church. She said lost her phone during the melee but was able to stay calm until she got it back.

A young boy who was with his dance group describes running to a nearby bathroom during the shooting.

Texas leaders release statements on Lakewood Church shooting

After hearing the news of the shooting at Lakewood Church, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott released the following statement:

“Our hearts are with those impacted by today’s tragic shooting and the entire Lakewood Church community in Houston. Places of worship are sacred. I have been in contact with Mayor Whitmire and offered the full support and resources of the State of Texas, including Department of Public Safety officers and Texas Rangers, to help this community and help bring swift justice to the criminal who committed this heinous act. Join Cecilia and me in praying for this community during this difficult time and for the brave men and women in blue who acted quickly to respond to this tragedy.”

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo released a statement saying, “My heart goes out to the congregation and all affected, and I am angered at the fact that the alleged shooter seems to have brought a young child with her who now has terrible injuries.

Live updates from the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.

The eyes of the nation are on Las Vegas as the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the San Francisco 49ers.

Take a look at some big moments, excitement and headlines being made as the teams gear up to play.

McKinnon, Moore active for Chiefs, but Toney sits

Running back Jerick McKinnon and wide receiver Skyy Moore were active for the Kansas City Chiefs for the first time in nearly two months for their Super Bowl showdown with the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

McKinnon and Moore, who both played a crucial role in the Chiefs’ win over the Eagles in the Super Bowl last year, have not played since Dec. 17 in New England. McKinnon had surgery for a core injury in early January and was considered questionable to play against the 49ers, while Moore spent a stint on injured reserve with a lingering knee injury.

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who also had a TD against the Eagles, was not active on Sunday.

Taylor Swift greeted at Super Bowl by Roger Goodell, Jason Kelce

Taylor Swift’s arrival at Allegiant Stadium even drew the interest of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who visited her in a luxury suite before the game.

Goodell spoke glowingly Monday about the pop star’s effect on the NFL.

“Taylor is obviously a dynamo,” he said. “Everything she touches, there are people following. We count ourselves fortunate, and we welcome it.”

Kelce’s brother, Jason, hugged Swift in the suite, and Swift introduced him to Ice Spice. Jason Kelce plays for the Philadelphia Eagles but has fully supported his brother during the playoffs. The two faced each other in last year’s Super Bowl.

Kristin Juszczyk arrives in self-made style

Kristin Juszczyk arrived at the Super Bowl in a snazzy jacket that includes her husband Kyle’s 49ers jersey and his Harvard shield. Kyle is a fullback out of Harvard who plays for San Francisco.

Kristin has become a star after designing a coat worn by Taylor Swift that looked like a jersey of her boyfriend, Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce.

    Taylor Swift has arrived

Taylor Swift finished her epic trek from the Tokyo Dome to Allegiant Stadium for the Super Bowl on Sunday. She arrived with Blake Lively and a few others wearing a black top with black pants and a red jacket slung over her shoulder.

Swift is on hand to watch Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, whom she has been dating since the first couple of weeks of the season. She performed in Japan on Saturday night before a flight across nine time zones and the international date line to reach the U.S.

No mixed loyalty this year for Donna Kelce

The mother of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce arrived for the game wearing a jacket with “SUPER BOWL LVIII” and “MAMA KELCE” on the back. In last season’s Super Bowl, Travis Kelce’s Chiefs defeated his brother Jason Kelce’s team, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Instead of a matchup between two brothers, the Kelce family is in the spotlight this year because of Travis’ relationship with pop star Taylor Swift. Donna Kelce has appeared in a suite alongside Swift this season.

49ers enter the Super Bowl as 2 ½-point favorites

The San Francisco 49ers are 2 ½-point favorites against the Kansas City Chiefs ahead of their Super Bowl matchup, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

The 49ers are -134 favorites to win the game, while the over/under sat at 46.5 points.

Despite being the underdog, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the favorite to win Super Bowl MVP at +150, followed by 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy at +210.

Jason Kelce ready to root on brother Travis, Chiefs

Travis Kelce played against Jason Kelce last year, when the Chiefs beat his big brothers’ Eagles in the Super Bowl in Arizona. But Jason was fully behind the Chiefs on Sunday, wearing red and yellow plaid overalls over a T-shirt that read, “Big Yeti,” his nickname for Travis.

The brothers host “New Heights,” one of the hottest podcasts in the country. And once the Eagles were knocked from the playoffs, Jason began following the Chiefs. He famously took off his shirt during a celebration in Buffalo, and he watched the Chiefs win the AFC title in Baltimore.

Reba arrives, set to perform national anthem

Reba McEntire walked into Allegiant Stadium for the Super Bowl about 3 1/2 hours before kickoff Sunday wearing a puffy, gray faux fur coat and holding hands with her partner, Rex Linn.

McEntire is due to perform the national anthem before the Kansas City Chiefs play the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch of the Super Bowl four years ago in Miami. She will have a lot to live up to after Chris Stapleton’s performance last year in Arizona received high praise.

Some NFL fans pass on expensive tickets and just have ‘a good time’ in Vegas

Super Bowl ticket prices remain out of reach for many fans who made travel reservations months ago to come to Las Vegas this week, so they’ll likely be watching on TV like millions of others.

To buy tickets days before the game can be costly. This year they’re going for roughly $7,700 — though that is about $2,000 less than they were two weeks ago.

Carl Bray, a Cincinnati fan, booked his trip to the Super Bowl two months ago and came even though the Bengals didn’t make it.

“I don’t have tickets yet, but I got the hotel, flight, and I thought ‘Welp, if I lock into something, I’ll go,’” Bray said. “If not, I’ll just go to MGM or someplace and watch it.”

Patrick Mahomes looks ready for business in Super Bowl arrival

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes paid homage to the team that calls Allegiant Stadium home when he showed up for the Super Bowl on Sunday wearing a jet-black suit and silver tie that made him look like a fan of the AFC West-rival Las Vegas Raiders.

Mahomes appeared to be all business behind his black shades as he wheeled along his matching black Louis Vuitton luggage through the corridors of the stadium. He is trying to move into a tie for fourth behind Tom Brady, Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw by picking up his third Super Bowl ring.

“I’m only seeing good signs today,” Tony Chiosso said.

Will Taylor Swift make it to the big game in time? Intrepid flight trackers online seem to think so.

On social media, fans of Taylor Swift and aviation journalists believe they’ve identified Swift’s private jet, labeled “The Football Era.”

It arrived from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to Los Angeles’ LAX airport just after 3:30 p.m. local time Saturday.

Her transportation plans onward to Las Vegas, where her boyfriend, NFL star tight end Travis Kelce, will play in Sunday’s Super Bowl, have yet to be revealed.

Why will the Chiefs win the SuperBowl? Their vast experience

If the Chiefs beat the 49ers for their third Super Bowl title in four trips over the past five years, it will be for one simple reason: experience.

The Chiefs can lean on what they learned and endured over a dominant six-year run with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback. In fact, when the Chiefs beat the 49ers in Miami for their first title during this run, San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and many others were still in college.

Throw in the fact that Chiefs coach Andy Reid will be in his fifth Super Bowl, the third most in NFL history, and has a chance to win a third ring, and the knowledge on the Kansas City sideline will be an advantage too big for the 49ers to overcome.

The 49ers had Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs on the ropes four years ago in the Super Bowl before everything fell apart, leading to a 31-20 loss that still stings today.

The difference when the teams meet in the rematch on Sunday? This time, the 49ers will have a quarterback in Brock Purdy who is capable of making a big play down the stretch.

Taylor Swift’s connections to sports go back to her early days performing the national anthem

Before Taylor Swift grew into a global superstar and the talk of this Super Bowl, she got her singing career started by performing the national anthem at sporting events as a young child and teenager.

She sang the anthem before 45,900 fans at Game 3 of the 2008 World Series. The U.S. Open. NASCAR. The World Series. Yes, even the Double-A Reading Phillies.

Swift was an unsigned artist who looked for any kind of break by belting out the song about the land of the free and the home of the brave in front of as many packed crowds as she could find.

For Native American activists, the Kansas City Chiefs have it all wrong

Dozens of Indigenous activists have traveled to Las Vegas to gather outside the Super Bowl and demand the Kansas City Chiefs change their name and ditch their logo and gametime rituals.

Rhonda LeValdo founded and leads a group called Not In Our Honor that is calling for the changes. The Acoma Pueblo journalist and faculty member at Haskell Indian Nations University has been in the Kansas City area for more than two decades.

Everyone hopes the Chiefs-49ers Super Bowl won’t come down to an officiating call

One of the biggest fears when it comes to football’s biggest games is that a high-profile officiating mistake will play a role in the result.

So the seven on-field officials will get plenty of screen time when the Kansas City Chiefs face the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

The referee in charge of the crew in black-and-white unforms will be Bill Vinovich. He was also the referee when the Chiefs beat the 49ers in the Super Bowl four years ago — and when the Rams beat the Saints in the 2019 NFC championship game after an infamous missed call.

Here’s what you can expect from Super Bowl commercials this Sunday

Advertisers will be pulling out all the stops on Super Bowl Sunday — enlisting the biggest actors, investing in the most dazzling special effects and, they hope, going for laughs as they seek to win over viewers.

Most companies appear to be doubling down on flights of fantasy or light humor, often with a dose of nostalgia and a lot of mini-reunions of TV characters.

Big names like Jennifer Anniston, Christopher Walken, Arnold Schwarzenneger, Ice Spice, Jenna Ortega, Lionel Messi, Tom Brady, “Judge Judy” Judy Sheindlin, Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner Usher and more will appear during game breaks. And as always, there will still be some gameday surprises.

The game. The ads. The music. The puppies. Here’s why millions are excited for Super Bowl Sunday

Millions of Americans will find something to be excited about when it comes to Super Bowl Sunday. That’s before even factoring in the influence of Taylor Swift.

Four in 10 U.S. adults are extremely or very excited for at least one part of the Super Bowl day’s festivities. That could be the game, commercials, halftime show or the Puppy Bowl, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

49ers All-Pro offensive tackle Trent Williams savors his first Super Bowl trip in his 14th season

Trent Williams’ accomplishments are already worthy of a Hall of Fame career with 11 Pro Bowl bids, three first-team All-Pro selections and near universal recognition as the best left tackle of his generation.

All that was missing for the San Francisco 49ers star was something he never envisioned would be possible as he spent the first decade of his career mired in the dysfunction and ineptitude in Washington.

Williams has gotten that missing piece with his first chance to play in the Super Bowl this week against Kansas City.

High school football gave hope after deadly Maui wildfire. Team captains will be at the Super Bowl

Captains of a Hawaii high school football team whose town was destroyed by a deadly wildfire are at the Super Bowl as guests of the NFL.

The four students and three of their coaches are serving as honorary coin toss captains before the game.

A little more than two months after the Aug. 8 fire, tickets for the Lahainaluna High School homecoming game sold out in minutes. That was an indication of how badly Lahaina residents needed a glimmer of hope amid a tragedy that claimed at least 100 lives.

Quadball tournament held in Roseville, bringing more than 200 athletes to city

    [ad_1]

“It’s like Ultimate Frisbee meets rugby, while a game of dodgeball is going on,” said Lindsey Simpson, captain of the Lost Boys Quadball Club.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. — The West Coast National Qualifiers of Quadball, formerly known as Quidditch from Harry Potter, were in Roseville’s Maidu Regional Park Saturday.

The game is straight from the Harry Potter book series and combines dodgeball, rugby and tag on a field while athletes must carry a plastic pipe between their legs (as if they’re riding a broomstick.)

There are only a few differences between what folks saw in Roseville Saturday versus what’s in the book series.

“First and foremost, we don’t fly. So I think that’s like the biggest, most obvious difference,” said Lindsey Simpson, captain of the Lost Boys Quadball Club. “It’s like Ultimate Frisbee meets rugby, while a game of dodgeball is going on.”

She came up from Los Angeles to compete against teams from across the country this weekend.

“It’s full contact, we are like a mixed gender sport, just like you would see in Harry Potter. I play with people of varying genders and shapes and sizes,” said Simpson. “I’ve been playing forever, and I think it’s the bee’s knees, honestly.”

More than a dozen teams, including more than 200 athletes, came from as far away as New Jersey and Wisconsin for the tournament.

“I think the community is like the greatest thing in the world… Quadball is the most unique, beautiful sport in the world in my opinion,” said Simpson. “So definitely come join us and see what it’s all about ’cause it’s really cool.”

Tickets are $5 per day in advance and available online and $10 per day when the tournament starts. Games start at 8 a.m. both days.

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – San Francisco residents Corey and Paul Frentsos are San Francisco 49ers fanatics and they have the “fan cave” to prove it.

Behind sliding doors is a collection of 49ers gear that only a Niners faithful could dream of. These items include rugs, blankets, countless pins, and autographed flags.

“They call me ‘Captian Faithful’ for a reason,” said Corey.

Corey Frentsos in the “fan cave”

Corey says the fan cave came together four years ago upon moving into their home. Once Corey’s husband Paul agreed to his idea of a room dedicated to the 49ers, Corey held nothing back.

The elaborate room is even insured.

This decked-out room was built to represent everything that the Niners stand for — family and friends, community, love, and respect. The room also memorializes the memories the couples made with the Niners community and team.

The couple has enough jerseys for the entire team but is ready to always add more.

The Frentsos are certain the 49ers have the apparatus to win the Super Bowl on Sunday.

“We have the team, the coach, the QB, all the weapons that we need to finally make it over that hump,” said Corey.

Super Bowl Sunday with a chilly start in the 30s, then sunshine and warming day time highs near 60.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Super Bowl Sunday, seeing cold morning lows in the upper 30s and low 40s.. Another dry and mild day is ahead with highs near 60° under sunny skies. A few high clouds are possible, but nothing much more than that.

This weekend is really the beginning of a drier and warmer stretch of weather.

High pressure will be present for much of the next several days. This will close the storm door and send temps a few degrees above average for the time of year. Valentine’s Day looks particularly nice, with highs in the middle 60s. Some clouds are possible during the midweek period but we stay dry.

The dry and mild pattern doesn’t last too long.

High pressure breaks down after Valentine’s Day, reopening the storm door and putting rain chances back in the forecast starting on Thursday. The 8-14 day precipitation outlook from the Climate Prediction Center sums up what all of the weather models are showing: a high chance of flipping back to a wet pattern by the Presidents’ Day weekend.

Thursday is the first day with scattered shower chances, but more than likely we stay dry until Friday. That’s when more widespread showers are likely, ahead of a bigger storm over the weekend.

It’s still about a week away and as we know, a week is a long ways away in the weather world. So we aren’t going to talk details here, but we can say that heavy rain, heavy snow, and strong winds are all possible and even likely with the storm next weekend. Generally expecting a few inches of rain and a few feet of Sierra snow. The other thing we’re watching for is the potential for strong wind gusts, although likely not like what we saw last week.

In the meantime, enjoy the mild and dry stretch of weather and keep checking back for the latest on the next storm.

TONIGHT: Clear skies and cold temps in the upper 30s for the valley. Lake Tahoe temps in the teens.

TOMORROW: Sunny to mostly sunny with highs in the upper 50s. Lake Tahoe highs in the low 40s.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny with highs near 60°. Lake Tahoe highs in the 40s.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny with highs in the low 60s. Lake Tahoe highs in the 40s.

VALENTINE’S DAY: Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid-60s. Lake Tahoe highs in the 40s.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy skies. Highs in the mid-60s. Lake Tahoe highs in the 40s.

FRIDAY: Cloudy with shower chances. Highs in the low to mid-60s. Lake Tahoe highs in the mid 40s.

SATURDAY: Rain. Highs in the mid-50s. Lake Tahoe highs in the 30s with snow.

SUNDAY: Rain. Highs in the mid-50s. Lake Tahoe highs in the 30s with snow.

Usher promises surprises in his Super Bowl performance

    [ad_1]

FRESNO, Calif. (KGPE) – As we get set for Super Bowl 58 on Sunday, it’s not all just about the game. People watching at home are also interested in the commercials, and they’re interested in the high-profile musical performances.

The halftime entertainment this Sunday is an Usher. He is an R&B legend, who recently wrapped up a Las Vegas residency in December.

In a news conference on Thursday, the R&B legend says this set is going to have some surprises. It’s his 101st show in Las Vegas. He’s been doing a residency here and will now embark on a world tour.

When it comes to the Super Bowl, Usher says he’s talked to past halftime performers about how to handle the mini-concert. Generally, a Super Bowl halftime show goes about 12 to 15 minutes, but with his catalog of hits, it might not be that easy to pick a setlist.

“I want to put on a show that I felt would represent my idea of creativity what I’ve been able to do is bring a great deal of Atlanta and the melting pot that it is musically, and culturally to Las Vegas. You know, that is the source that has been fueling me for these years creatively,” said Usher.

Usher, an eight-time Grammy winner, is not new to the Super Bowl. He was a guest in 2011 during the Black-Eyed Peas’ performance. Usher also has an upcoming nationwide tour in August and a new album coming out Friday.

‘Utter disbelief’: Missing dog named Patches found nearly four years after wandering away

    [ad_1]

NEARLY 600 MILES AND FOUR YEARS LATER, A MISSING DOG IS RESCUED JUST MINUTES AWAY FROM THE MEXICO BORDER. GOOD EVENING. I’M QUANECIA FRASER PATCHES IS NOW. ALMOST TEN YEARS OLD. HER OWNER SAYS SHE WANDERED AWAY FROM A FAMILY FRIEND’S HOUSE IN COLORADO IN 2020. BUT LAST WEEK SHE WAS FOUND BY A SHELTER IN NEW MEXICO. KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S MADDIE AUGUSTINE SAT DOWN WITH PATCH’S OWNER IN THIS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW, QUANECIA BENJAMIN BAXTER TELLS ME HE NEVER THOUGHT HE WOULD SEE PATCHES AGAIN, BUT LAST WEEK HIS WIFE CALLED WHILE HE WAS ON HIS LUNCH BREAK WITH THE NEWS. PATCHES MAY BE ALIVE THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE THAT DAY WAS JUST UTTER DISBELIEF. DISBELIEF THAT AFTER NEARLY FOUR YEARS, BENJAMIN BAXTER’S CHILDHOOD DOG PATCHES IS STILL ALIVE AND SAFE. THEY HAD PUT A LOST OR A FOUND A ADD UP FOR HER. AND I’M LOOKING AT THIS PICTURE. I’M JUST LIKE, THERE’S NO WAY BENJAMIN SAYS HE FIRST BROUGHT PATCHES HOME TEN YEARS AGO WHEN SHE WAS ONLY SIX WEEKS OLD, AND THEY WERE INSTANT BEST FRIENDS. I WOULD BE HUNTING OR, UH, ROCK CLIMBING OR WHATEVER, AND SHE’D BE RIGHT THERE. AND SHE WAS THE ONLY DOG I’VE EVER BEEN AROUND TO THAT ACTUALLY LOVED ROCK CLIMBING. BUT SHE’D ALWAYS HAD THIS BIG OLD GOOFY GRIN ON HER FACE THE WHOLE TIME WE WERE OUT. BUT IN 2020, BENJAMIN HAD TO LEAVE PATCHES WITH A FAMILY FRIEND IN CALHAN, COLORADO. AFTER MOVING TO NEBRASKA BECAUSE HIS APARTMENT DIDN’T ALLOW PETS, SHE DECIDED THAT SHE WOULD TAKE PATCHES FROM ME UNTIL I COULD FIND ANOTHER PLACE WHERE I COULD HAVE A DOG WITH ME. BUT JUST A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER, IN APRIL 2020, PATCHES ESCAPED HER KENNEL AND WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. BY DAY SEVEN, I STARTED REALIZING THAT WE WEREN’T GOING TO FIND THIS DOG AND I WAS DEVASTATED UNTIL THIS YEAR. ON JANUARY 31ST, BENJAMIN’S WIFE, ELIZABETH BAXTER, GOT A CALL FROM BENJAMIN’S MOM. SHE’D BEEN GETTING MISSED CALLS FROM AN AREA CODE IN NEW MEXICO, UM, SAYING THAT THEY HAD PATCHES, AND SHE WAS LIKE, IS THIS A SCAM? IS THIS NOT I DON’T KNOW, PATCHES HAD BEEN FOUND AS A STRAY IN LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO. ALL IN ALL, LIKE CONSIDERING THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF HER BEING FOUND ON THE STREET AS A STRAY. YEAH, LIKE SHE LOOKS VERY, VERY GOOD. BENJAMIN SAYS MULTIPLE SHELTERS WORK TO BRING PATCHES BACK TO COLORADO TO HIS FAMILY FRIEND. OVER THE LAST WEEK. NOW HE’S JUST HOURS AWAY FROM BEING REUNITED. WE’VE GOT LOTS OF TIME TO MAKE UP FOR, AND I JUST WANT TO GIVE HER A PLACE WHERE SHE CAN BE AT PEACE AND BE AT REST. AND THESE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS THAT WE’RE GOING TO GET TOGETHER. BUT BENJAMIN SAYS HE EXPECTS TO DRIVE TO COLORADO AND REUNITE WITH PATCHES BY NEXT WEEK. THEY’VE ALSO SET UP A DONATION FUND TO HELP THANK THE SHELTERS THAT BROUGHT PATCHES HOME SAFE. ‘Utter disbelief’: Missing dog named Patches found nearly four years after wandering away

Nearly 600 miles and four years later, a missing dog is rescued just minutes away from the Mexico border. Benjamin Baxter told sister station KETV that he never thought he would see Patches again after she wandered away from a family friend’s house in Colorado in 2020, but last week, she was found by a shelter in New Mexico. “The best way to describe that day was just utter disbelief,” Baxter said. Disbelief that after nearly four years, his childhood dog, Patches, is still alive and safe. “They had put a lost or a found ad up for her, and I’m looking at this picture, and I’m just like, there’s no way, right?” Baxter said. “I haven’t seen this dog in four years, and there’s just no way my brain literally could not comprehend that I was seeing a picture of my dog as she is now.”Baxter said he first brought Patches home 10 years ago when he was just 13 years old and Patches, was just 6 weeks old. He says they were instant best friends. “I traveled all over the country, state to state and bounced around here, there and pretty much everywhere, and she was there by my side through everything,” Baxter said. “I would be hunting, rock climbing or whatever, and she’d be right there. She was the only dog I’ve ever been around that actually loved rock climbing, but she’d always have this big, goofy grin on her face the whole time.”But in 2020, Baxter made a difficult decision after his new living situation didn’t allow dogs. He had to leave Patches with a family friend in Calhan, Colorado, while he moved to Nebraska for a new job. “She decided that she would take Patches from me until I could find another place where I could have a dog with me,” Baxter said. But just a couple of months later, in April 2020, Patches escaped her kennel and was nowhere to be found.”I thought, OK, you know, like this isn’t a big deal,” Baxter said. “And like I said, she’s a Houdini, so she loves wandering and we’ll get her back fast. But, the days go by, weeks go by. Nothing, I mean, absolutely nothing. Nobody ever responded to any of our lost posters or ads or whatever. By day seven, I started realizing that we weren’t going to find this dog, and I was devastated.”Patches was missing. Until this year.On Jan. 31, Elizabeth Baxter, Benjamin’s wife, got a call from Benjamin’s mom. “She’d been getting missed calls from an area code in New Mexico saying that they had Patches, and she’s like is this a scam?” Elizabeth said. “Is this not? I don’t know.”After several phone calls and emails containing Patches’ past medical records, photos and documentation, it was clear this was, in fact, not a scam.”They’re like, If you want her back, she’s yours,” Elizabeth said. “And I was like, for sure, we want this dog back because I knew how much it would mean to him to have her back.”A day Benjamin never thought would happen. He said at this point, he thought Patches had either found a new home, was eaten by predators, or had simply passed from old age. But, Patches had been found as a stray in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Hundreds of miles away from her home. “All in all, like, considering the circumstance of her being found on the street as a stray, like, she looks very, very good,” Elizabeth said. And with the help of multiple shelters and volunteers, Patches is on her way home. Over the last week, Patches has traveled from New Mexico back to Benjamin’s family friend’s house in Colorado. “I’m just excited to get my dog back,” Benjamin said. “We’ve got lots of time to make up for, and I just want to give her a place where she can be at peace and be at rest in these last couple of years that we’re going to get together.”Reuniting with his long-lost best friend, Benjamin said he plans to drive to Colorado by next week to bring Patches home for good. “If only an animal could tell you stories, because I would love to find out how the heck she can just disappear and where she was, who she was with, how she ended up so close to Mexico,” Benjamin said. Both Elizabeth and Benjamin are grateful to the shelters and family that have helped bring Patches home safely.”We’re just really grateful,” Elizabeth said. “We feel like, we’re really strong believers, and we feel as though God has really just guided and directed this.”The Baxters have set up a donation fund to help thank those shelters and volunteers, if you would like to donate, click here.

Homeless camps in Sacramento cleared for Leonardo DiCaprio movie filming

    [ad_1]

(FOX40.COM) — Parts of Downtown Sacramento look clearer than usual as officials remove homeless camps from Cesar Chavez Park amid scheduled filming for a new movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Teyana Taylor.

Over the past few weeks, Warner Bros film crew has been spotted throughout the area working on a movie referred to as the “BC Project.” Although “Notice of Filming” signs were plastered throughout Downtown Sacramento in advance, the area has not been fully camera-ready.

Homeless camps are prevalent near Cesar Chavez Park, where some movie-filming is being done. The City of Sacramento officials took action for the film crew and placed notices on tents on Friday that advised campers they have to pack up and leave within 24 hours.

“Six tents were noticed in the filming area,” said City of Sacramento spokesperson, Tim Watson. “Through outreach and engagement from city resource coordinators, people in the area were offered connection to services and placement at the city’s Roseville Road campus.”

Watson said that four campers accepted the city’s offer.

Sacramento Homeless Union President Crystal Sanchez said the city’s latest move is just another instance of the City of Sacramento discriminating against the unhoused population. She addressed the producers of the film in a prepared statement:

“We hope they take a minute and understand the crisis of homelessness and that the film has notably harmed some folks trying to survive this homeless crisis. We ask that the producers are cognizant of the City of Sacramento’s harmful action and would hope they address it with them.”

  • Super Bowl… Saturday? The big reason it’ll probably never happen

Super Bowl… Saturday? The big reason it’ll probably never happen

    [ad_1]

If there is one constant in life, it’s that the Super Bowl will always be on a Sunday and people will always talk about how they wish it was on Saturday.

Not only is it a big day for television, it’s also reportedly the second-largest day for food consumption in the U.S., behind Thanksgiving Day.

Why is the Super Bowl on a Sunday?

Ever since the championship game’s inception on Jan. 15, 1967, the Super Bowl has always been played on Sundays.

For years, fans of the sporting event have signed online petitions to move the Super Bowl to Saturday.

One of the more recent attempts to try and convince the league to change the big game was a Florida high school senior’s petition, which received over 144,000 signatures on Change.org.

Mondays after the Super Bowl are notorious for the number of employees calling out of work.

In 2023, a survey by the Workforce Institute found 18.1 million employees said they planned to miss work the day after the Super Bowl. More than 3 million admitted they planned to call in sick even though they weren’t actually feeling ill.

Additionally, 4.7 million workers admitted that they planned to “ghost” their employers and skip work without notice on that Monday.

One reason the National Football League is adamant about keeping the Super Bowl on Sundays is due to TV ratings, according to past comments from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

During a 2018 interview on “The Kyle Brandt Football Experience,” Goodell said it really comes down to TV ratings.

“The reason we haven’t done it in the past is simply just from an audience standpoint. The audiences on Sunday night are so much larger,” Goodell said in 2018. “Fans want to have the best opportunity to be able to see the game and we want to give that to them, so Sunday night is a better night.”

Last year’s Super Bowl, LVII, had 115 million viewers, making it not only the most watched Super Bowl in history, but also the most popular TV program of all-time in the U.S.

A report from Sportsbook Review found the U.S. will experience over $5 billion drop in workforce productivity in the week of and day after the Super Bowl. But it also found moving the game back one day could lead to a decrease in consumer spending between 20 and 45%.

    When is the Super Bowl?

Super Bowl LVIII (which stands for Super Bowl 58) kicks off on Sunday, Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, around 6:30 p.m. Eastern (5:30 p.m. Central Time, 4:30 p.m. Mountain Time and 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time).

Teen escorted in limo by Galt police to ‘Night to Shine’ prom

    [ad_1]

Angel Renteria was seriously injured after being hit by a car while walking her dog in Galt in 2022. Tonight was her night to shine on the red carpet and more.

GALT, Calif. — The official start of prom season isn’t until spring, but some students got a head start around the country celebrating a ‘Night to Shine.’

The annual event is hosted to give the full prom experience to those with special needs or have experienced life altering events. It was created by the Tim Tebow Foundation and Galt’s event was locally executed by the Horizon Community Church in Lodi.

“This year, we have 46 plus people that never experienced it before. So that’s awesome,” said senior pastor Time Stevenson.

This is the Lodi/Galt area’s seventh year hosting the event. The first tim they hosted it, there were about 75 honorary guests — this year it’s double.

“This is one night that we can celebrate not only the kids, but the parents because it’s an age from 14 to there’s no limit on time,” said Stevenson.

Angel Renteria was seriously injured after being hit by a car while walking her dog in Galt. The accident caused her serious brain and body injuries.

She spent weeks in the ICU, then five months in the hospital before returning home, no longer able to walk or talk.

“The journey has been long and hard and raw,” said Kelly Carr, Angel’s mother. “It’s has changed our lives completely up, as like, uprooted our whole life.”

Angel was escorted from home in a limo by Galt Police Department officers who also walked her down the red carpet.

“I think she loves the spotlight. I think it makes her feel really happy to know that everyone’s here supporting her,” said Jadelyn Crost, Angel’s friend.

Her escort was organized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving who helped solve her case and led officials to make an arrest using DNA evidence.

“This was a life altering situation for Angel. She does not attend regular mainstream school anymore, her whole entire life is different,” said Rhonda Campbell with MADD. “But tonight, she got to walk the red carpet, she got to be crowned prom queen and she got to attend a prom”

The event was free for guests and their families to have a night they won’t forget.

‘We ended up losing everything’: Woodland home hit twice by falling trees during storms

The family was still rebuilding from a tree that hit their home in December 2022.

IT’S HARD NOT TO HAVE THE THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU. IT’S HARD TO LOSE YOUR FAMILY MEMENTOS. DECEMBER 31ST OF 2022 IS A DAY STACY MOUNCE SAYS HER FAMILY LOST EVERYTHING WHEN WE DROVE UP AND THERE WAS A 40 TON CEDAR THAT WAS ON THE HOUSE AND THEY HAD JUST MOVED INTO THE WOODLAND HOME. THEY HAD ONLY LIVED THERE FOR 36 HOURS WHEN A TREE DESTROYED IT DURING A WINTER STORM. IT CRUSHED THE WHOLE CEILING. THE LIVING ROOM, THE DINING ROOM NOT ONLY THAT, IT EXPOSED ASBESTOS IN THE WALLS AND ROOF THAT NIGHT, MOUNCE WALKED AWAY FROM HER HOME WITH ONLY TWO BACKPACKS FOR HER KIDS. WE ENDED UP LOSING EVERYTHING IN THE HOUSE AND THE HOUSE, AND IT’S BEEN, YOU KNOW, PROCESS SINCE THEN. AFTER A YEAR OF CHALLENGES, THEY GOT A CITY PERMIT TO REBUILD LAST JULY, AND THE FAMILY HOPED TO FINALLY ENJOY THEIR NEW HOME THIS COMING APRIL. BUT THEN CAME AN UNEXPECTED CALL FROM THEIR NEIGHBOR THIS PAST SUNDAY. SHE CALLED ME AND SAID, YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU, BUT. BUT I HAVE SOME BAD NEWS FOR YOU. A TREE FELL ON YOUR HOUSE AGAIN AND I WAS LIKE, NO WAY. THE NEWS SEEMED UNREAL. TWO TREES LANDING ON HER HOME IN JUST OVER A YEAR, THEY WERE GETTING READY TO PUT A NEW ROOF ON, AND SO NOW IT KIND OF PAUSES THINGS, MOUNCE TELLS KCRA THREE. REBUILDING HER HOME WAS ALREADY A LONG PROCESS. ONCE YOU COME UP WITH A PLAN FOR HOW TO FIX IT, THEN IT’S THE LONG WAITING GAME FOR THE PERMITS. THIS BRINGS MORE UNCERTAINTY ABOUT WHAT OTHER PERMITS SHE MIGHT NEED AND HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE HER INSURANCE COMPANY TO PROCESS HER NEW CLAIM FOR THE INSURANCE PEOPLE. LIKE, WE’RE JUST LIKE A NUMBER, RIGHT? AND I’M LIKE, YEAH, LIKE, THIS IS MY LIFE. LIKE, THIS IS MY CHILDREN’S WHERE WE LIVE, AND IT’S ALL OF MY CHILDREN’S THINGS. AND IT’S, YOU KNOW, IT’S HARD TO FEEL LIKE YOU’RE JUST A NUMBER TO SOMEBODY ELSE WHEN YOU’RE GOING THROUGH SOMETHING THAT IS SUCH A, LIKE, TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE. MOUNCE DOESN’T KNOW WHEN HER FAMILY WILL FINALLY BE ABLE TO GO BACK HOME. BUT THROUGH IT ALL, SHE STILL FINDS REASONS TO BE GRATEFUL. I TRY TO HAVE A GOOD ATTITUDE ABOUT IT AND FEEL BLESSED IN THE FACT THAT, YOU KNOW, MY KIDS ARE SAFE AND WE’RE NOT HURT, AND WE’RE GOING TO EVENTUALLY BE ABLE TO LIVE HERE, BUT IT’S CERTAINLY HAS. BEEN A CHALLENGING THING DURING THE COURSE OF THE YEAR. MOUNCE IS STILL WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM THE CITY ABOUT THE PROCESS SHE NEEDS TO FOLLOW TO GET PERMITS TO REPAIR THE NEW DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE TREE. IN THE MEANTIME, THEY’RE STILL RENTING A PLACE TO LIVE WHILE FIGURING EVERYTHING OUT. CAROLINA. WE JUST FEEL FOR THIS FAMILY. HOW LONG DOES IT TYPICALLY TAKE FOR WOODLAND TO THE CITY TO ISSUE A PERMIT? EDIE, THE CITY OF WOODLAND TELLS ME IN TOTAL, IT COULD TAKE UP TO 20 WORKING DAYS SINCE THEY DO TWO BUILDING PLAN REVIEWS. HOWEVER, MINOR PROJECTS LIKE A KITCHEN OR A BATHROOM REMODEL CAN BE APPROVED IN LESS THAN FIVE DAYS. BUT IT’S ALL GOING TO DEPEND ON HOW DETAILED AND COMPLETE THE PLANS THE RESIDENT SUBMITS ARE. THEY HAVE ALREADY BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH

Stacey Mounce remembers Dec. 31, 2022, as the day her family lost everything. Mounce and her family had just moved into their new home in Woodland. They had only lived there for 26 hours when a giant cedar tree destroyed it during a winter storm. Not only did the tree damage the ceiling, living room, dining room, but it exposed asbestos in the walls and roof. That night, she walked away from her home with only two backpacks for her kids. “We ended up losing everything in the house and the house. It’s been a process since then,” Mounce said. After a year of challenges, they got a permit to rebuild last July, and the family finally hoped to enjoy their new home this coming April. Until they got a call from a neighbor telling them another tree fell on their home last Sunday. “They were getting ready to put a new roof on so now it pauses things,” Mounce said. Rebuilding her home was already a long process, and this brought more uncertainty about what other permits she might need, and how long it will take her insurance company to process her new claim. “For the insurance people, we are just like a number and I’m like, This is my life. It’s where we live.’ It’s hard to feel like a number when you go through such a traumatic experience, ” Mounce said. How long does it take to get a building permit from Woodland? The city of Woodland told KCRA 3 that a building plan review usually takes 15 working days for the first review and five additional working days for resubmittals. • State lawmaker proposes publicly owned ‘CalCompute’ for AI innovation

State lawmaker proposes publicly owned ‘CalCompute’ for AI innovation

    [ad_1]

A state legislator proposed a bill that could create a public cloud computing cluster called CalCompute to make computer power for AI innovation more accessible.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Developments this week on the state and national level aim to protect against risks of artificial intelligence (AI) while spurring innovation.

Some say AI has potential for great good, including advancements in healthcare and transportation. It also has the potential for great harm, such as misinformation and cyber attacks.

The U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo announced Thursday the creation of the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium, bringing together more than 200 companies and organizations to create best practices for “the development and deployment of safe and trustworthy artificial intelligence.”

Members include Alphabet’s Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook’s parent company Meta, Apple and OpenAI — the creator of ChatGPT.

Here in Sacramento, state lawmakers are taking up AI as well.

“California is at the heart of AI innovation and we want to keep it that way,” said Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco).

He introduced Senate Bill 1047 Wednesday. If passed as currently written, it would task the California Department of Technology with creating a public cloud computing cluster called CalCompute.

“There are already some great, what we call, compute clusters, because AI development requires a lot of computing power and it can be very expensive,” said Wiener. “There are cloud compute clusters that really focus on research and academics, which is great, but we want to create a cluster that can be accessible for entrepreneurs, for startups, and make it really low-cost or free for them to be able to innovate.”

This would give powerful cloud-computing access to people who might not otherwise be able to afford that access, he said.

“It’ll increase access for small companies, startups, entrepreneurs, people who are just trying to innovate… because that can lead to the next great discovery,” said Wiener.

One of Wiener’s co-sponsors on the legislation is an organization called Economic Security California.

“Our mission is to build an economy where everyone has the freedom and stability to thrive,” said director Teri Olle.

CalCompute would put the power of AI innovation into more hands, she said.

“The vast majority of computing power in the large models are all being run and decided by for-profit commercial companies,” she said. “That corporate concentration really drives what we’re seeing in the world, in terms of innovation and research. CalCompute would be a publicly owned-and-operated cloud computing cluster that would keep a space for research, innovation and development of cutting-edge AI technology in the public interest and that is there for the public good.”

But as Wiener noted, cloud computing and data storage are expensive.

Susan Shelley with the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association worries about the cost of what SB 1047 is proposing, especially as the state is facing a budget deficit.

“It could certainly become one more budget item that every year is more expensive than they thought it was. Another bullet train in the sky kind of thing,” said Shelley.

She points out the California Department of Technology has been on the State Auditor’s High-Risk list for years, “for its inability to secure information and for its lack of oversight on technology projects throughout the California government.”

“To create CalCompute, that just sounds breathtakingly ambitious and very dangerous if the information was not secure,” said Shelley.

ABC10 took these concerns to Wiener.

“There are times when agencies are not perfect and there are times when mistakes are made. But, if we’re able to get this passed, we’re going to make sure that it’s implemented well,” said Wiener. “There will be a lot of people involved in helping make sure that it’s a success.”

Because the bill was just proposed, it does not yet have an exact price-tag attached to it. However, Wiener says he believes the cost will be worth the investment.

“There’s a long history in technology of public investments that lead to huge societal benefits and private benefits,” he said. “Public investment was a critical start to the internet as we know it. It started with the Department of Defense, and that changed the world.”

SB 1047 would also create some guardrails for AI, requiring developers of large AI models to pressure test those models before rolling them out to the public. The law would require companies to develop and follow extensive safety protocols.

Shelley of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association wonders why this is something California needs to take up.

Wiener said while he’s pleased to see the Biden Administration create the consortium for AI safety, he believes there need to be laws on the books. He sees a better chance of those passing at the state level than in our divided Congress right now.

‘Wrong place at the wrong time’: Man caught in massive Stockton sideshow bust says he was wrongfully arrested at gunpoint

    [ad_1]

(FOX40.COM) — Nearly 90 vehicles were recently towed at a massive sideshow bust in Stockton, and one man said he was at the wrong place at the wrong time when he was held at gunpoint by law enforcement and his vehicle seized.
•Video Above: Sheriff who seized 88 vehicles at sideshow says he’s waiting for approval of search warrants

It was about 10 p.m. on Feb. 3 when 25-year-old Merced resident, Isaac Cervantes, who was only in town for a night, said he left his hotel to fill up his gas tank before work. He said he works as a mechanic for a non-profit organization that helps low-income families with SMOG repairs. Still in his work uniform, he said he headed to the gas station located seven minutes from his hotel.

“I had to be at work at 5 a.m. I was prioritizing everything, so I decided to get gas the night before to have more time in the morning,” Cervantes told FOX40.com.

After leaving the station Cervantes said he was stopped by the sight of smoke coming from the nearby intersection.

“I thought there was an accident and that something was on fire because of all the smoke. I thought maybe someone needed help,” Cervantes said. “As a mechanic, it’s in my nature to help people in need. If I see someone with a flat tire or a car overheating, I’m going to stop and see if I can help.”

Cervantes said his work-assigned trip to Stockton was his first visit to the city.

“I never really heard of sideshows. I saw some stuff online, but I didn’t know that people had them in the middle of streets and neighborhoods,” Cervantes said.

Cervantes said that as he got closer to the sideshow scene, he realized there was no fire and that something else was going on. It was the sideshow. He said he attempted to drive away from the area, but it was too late. Before he could leave, he said he was stopped in the middle of an intersection by flashing lights and the San Joaquin Sheriff’s Office deputies with their guns drawn and pointed at him.

“They ordered me to stop and get out of the vehicle. They had guns pointed at me with their dogs barking,” Cervantes said. “I remained calm and followed their instructions. I assured myself that I’d show them my work stuff, my hotel information, and my work email that showed I was only there on business and then everything would be okay.”

But Cervantes said that’s not what happened. They would not look at the information on his phone or direct him to the sheriff in charge of the operation.

“They wouldn’t hear me out. They put me in handcuffs for two hours and then took my work truck,” Cervantes said. “Everything was so unorganized and chaotic. Nothing was investigated properly.”

Cervantes said he was not aware that sideshows were an issue in that area since he isn’t a local resident. After learning about the problem, he said it’s good that law enforcement is trying to crack down on them, but there needs to be “due diligence.”

“My rights were violated. I was arrested for two hours and not even given a citation,” Cervantes said. “I feel robbed. I feel like I’m facing punishment for someone else’s actions.”

He added, “I would have been okay if I was cited so that I can show up to court and talk to a judge. But the sheriff’s office hasn’t given any information. I don’t know what I’m being charged with, who to talk to, or what the next steps are. My rights were taken from me. They should reconsider their approach.”

Cervantes said that besides being a mechanic, he’s also a college student. Since the incident, he’s had to find alternate transportation to work and school and has not been given access to his tools, books, and laptop that we were in his work vehicle at the time of the tow.

“They looked at me in my mechanic’s uniform and accused me of making repairs to the cars in the show,” Cervantes said. “They judged me because of how I look and took my livelihood. Would it have been different if I were in a suit and tie?”

Cervantes said that this was his first time in Stockton and hopefully the last. He said he told his boss, who picked him up from the scene, that he had no desire to accept future work in the city because of how he was treated by law enforcement.

He said he is currently working on securing legal representation.

“I really don’t want to go down this legal rabbit hole,” Cervantes said. “I want the sheriff’s office to apologize and give me my way of like back.”

Since the incident, San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow said to “stop calling” because no one is getting their vehicles back anytime soon.

“Those vehicles will be held until their court cases have been settled with the district attorney’s office,” Withrow said. “They won’t be released anytime soon unless the DA (District Attorney) has settled your case. No need to keep calling. Your vehicles will stay with us. Therefore, they can’t be used in any more public nuisance or sideshows.”

As of Feb. 9, the sheriff said the vehicles are being “held as evidence” and that he’s waiting on a local judge to sign off on 88 search warrants in attempts to find illegal items inside the vehicles. Charges have yet to be filed.

FOX40 reached out to San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office for comment but has yet to receive a response.
