SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) – The Natomas Nighthawks are moving into the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Boys Division IV playoffs thanks to a strong second half, where they outscored the Colfax Falcons 45-24 in the half, en route to a 61-39 victory on Tuesday night in Sacramento.
With the win, Natomas (21-8) will advance to the next round where they will host the Sutter Huskies (19-10) on Thursday night.

A Sacramento freeway crash involving two children standing outside of their vehicle left one dead and another seriously injured, officials said Tuesday.The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened Sunday around 4:35 p.m. on westbound Highway 50 east of 65th Street. Officers got word of a disabled black Toyota blocking the fast lane at that location. While they were heading to that area, CHP said it learned that a crash happened there involving passengers of the Toyota.CHP said a 30-year-old man driving a Ford vehicle was traveling westbound on the fast lane at an unknown speed. That man tried slowing down to avoid hitting the Toyota but instead went into the center median.That stretch of Hwy. 50 has concrete K-rails that allow construction workers to enter the center median. CHP said an 8-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl were standing in that center medianWhile trying to avoid the Toyota, CHP said the Ford driver hit both kids. The Grammy award-winning soul singer and pianist will perform in a concert titled “An Evening With John Legend” on Aug. 16.
Legend is known for hits such as the Grammy-winning single “Ordinary People,” “Used to Love U” and “All of Me.”
“We are thrilled to welcome the extraordinary John Legend to The Venue,” Thunder Valley general manager Dawn Clayton said in a statement. “Our commitment to delivering the very best in entertainment remains unwavering, and with each addition to our 2024 lineup, we continue to raise the bar, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all who visit The Venue at Thunder Valley.”
Tickets for the concert go on sale to the public on Friday online or at the Thunder Valley Rewards Center Box Office.

According to Thunder Valley’s website, tickets range from $119.95 to $194.95. Guests must be 21 or older to attend. Guests between the ages of 13 to 20 are required to be accompanied at all times by an adult who is 21 or older.

The jury found 39-year-old Charles Barrett guilty after evidence and multiple testimonies from victims, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A popular rock climber working and living at Yosemite National Park was convicted Tuesday of sexual abuse and abusive sexual contact.
The jury found 39-year-old Charles Barrett guilty after multiple women testified he sexually assaulted them and evidence was brought to trial of a woman who was assaulted multiple times while in the area for the weekend, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of California.
U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert says Barrett threatened his victims in the lead-up to the trial.
Barrett was charged for the assault of one woman because the other assaults are “outside federal jurisdiction,” according to the attorney’s office.
“This defendant used his renown and physical presence as a rock climber to lure and intimidate victims who were part of the rock-climbing community,” said Talbert. “Today, the defendant has been held accountable for his crimes.”
Barrett is scheduled for sentencing May 21 and faces a maximum of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.

(FOX40.COM) — A person suspected of being armed during a traffic stop was shot by officers in Modesto on Tuesday morning, according to the Modesto Police Department.
The shooting took place just before 1 a.m. in the area of Paradise Road and S. Martin Luther King Driver and involved two officers.
The suspect was shot and is currently in stable condition at a Modesto area hospital, according to police.
Officers say they located a firearm at the scene of the shooting.

MODESTO, Calif — A person was injured in a shooting involving two Modesto police officers Tuesday.
The shooting happened just before 1 a.m. near Paradise Road and Martin Luther King Drive, according to the Modesto Police Department.
It’s unclear how the shooting happened. Police said a person was armed during a traffic stop and a firearm was recovered in the area. A person was shot and taken to a hospital in stable condition, the police department said. Neither officer was injured in the shooting.

SAN FRANCISCO (KSEE) – Senate candidate Steve Garvey says minimum wage is “where it is and should be,” citing California’s recent move to increase the minimum wage for some fast food workers to $20 an hour in April.
Executives at McDonald’s and Chipotle Mexican Grill have already indicated menu price hikes are coming, and at least two major Pizza Hut franchise operators in California announced that they would be laying off all in-house delivery drivers as a result of the new law.
“Minimum wage is where it is and should be,” said Steve Garvey during the debate Monday evening. “If you look at what California has done to fast food franchises right now, increasing the minimum wage to $20. Then what’s going to happen? That’s going to increase costs for hard-working Californians to go to a franchise.”
It’s at that point the bell is rung to indicate time has run out. However, Garvey continued.
“Instead of a Big Mac for $9, it’s going to be $15.”

Police and paramedics responded to the residence in the 500 block of Roger Avenue for a report of an unresponsive person, a South Lake Tahoe city spokesperson said. Paramedics told responding officers that two people were dead and they performed CPR on two other people. (FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento River Cats are partnering with Sutter Health and West Sacramento city officials to make upgrades for a sports complex used by youth baseball and softball programs in the area.
According to the River Cats, the team and Sutter Health donated funds to renovate the Alyce Norman Parks and Sports Fields complex in West Sacramento.

The renovation includes structural repairs to the backstop of field No. 4 at the complex’s softball fields, which are located in the city’s Bryte neighborhood.
Included in the renovation is the complete removal of the old backstops that were put in place before new posts installed.
“We are thrilled to team with our partners at Sutter Health to support our local community right here in West Sacramento,” River Cats president and COO Chip Maxson said in a statement. “Recreation spaces are crucial in promoting a healthy community, and we could not be more excited to ensure that all people in the West Sacramento area will have an outdoor space that supports activity of all kinds, especially softball.”
Alyce Norman Park is considered one of the oldest and most used parks in the city. The 17-acre park includes four softball fields, three little league diamonds, football facilities a playground and picnic area.
“The Parks and Recreation department is extremely grateful for the generous donation from Sutter Health and the Sacramento River Cats,” said West Sacramento parks and recreation director Kate Smith. “Access to parks, recreation, and leisure is foundational when looking at the health of a community, which is why our mission is ‘Parks Make Life Better.’ We look forward to a continued partnership that will support our efforts in building a healthy, thriving community for City of West Sacramento.”

Usher had a packed weekend with a halftime show performance, an album release and a surprise wedding.
WASHINGTON — Usher had plenty to celebrate over Super Bowl weekend.
Not only did the 45-year-old artist deliver a spectacular performance full of surprise guests at the Super Bowl halftime show, but the Grammy-winning R&B singer also reportedly got married, according to People.
People reported Monday that multiple sources confirmed Usher tied the knot in a Las Vegas wedding ceremony over the weekend with his longtime girlfriend Jennifer “Jenn” Goicoechea. Following the NFL championship game, Usher was spotted with Goicoechea in Las Vegas wearing a gold wedding band on his left ring finger.
The R&B singer was seen with a white fur coat over his black tuxedo while the 40-year-old music executive and former manager was seen in an all-white pantsuit.
Usher, whose real name is Usher Raymond IV, and the music executive obtained a marriage license in Clark County, Nevada, three days before the NFL championship game, People reported on Sunday.
It’s unclear whether the reported marriage happened before or after he headlined the Super Bowl halftime show.
The couple made their first public appearance in 2019 and have since welcomed two children together. Their daughter, Sovereign Bo, was born in 2020 and their son, Sire Castrello, was born in 2021.
“We’ve obviously made a commitment to life, for life together because of our children,” Usher said in his interview with People last week. “It wouldn’t be odd for us to get married. We already did here. You know what I’m saying?”
Usher’s halftime show performance and wedding ceremony comes just days after he released his first album in eight years. “Coming Home” dropped Friday, and the singer announced a U.S. tour in support of the album, with tickets going on sale Monday.

(FOX40.COM) — Former Sacramento City Council Member Sean Loloee is appearing in court on Monday.
It’s Loloee’s first court appearance since his arraignment in December regarding charges against him related to unfair labor practices at the Viva Supermarket grocery stores he owns.
Loloee resigned from his District 2 city council seat on Jan. 4, weeks after he was indicted on 25 federal charges.
The former councilman and the general manager of his stores, Karla Montoya, are facing charges including conspiracy to defraud the U.S. Department of Labor, obstruction of agency proceedings and possession and use of false immigration documents.
Loloee is facing additional charges of falsification of records, wire fraud and pandemic relief fraud.
In late October, Loloee’s grocery stores were searched by agents from federal and state agencies.
The December indictment lists Loloee as a Granite Bay resident and a judge directed him to live at a Granite Bay house owned by his wife since he is also barred from speaking with Montoya, whom Loloee said on previous occasions lives in a North Sacramento home where he also claimed to live during his time as a council member.

A total solar eclipse will briefly darken the skies over parts of North America on April 8, 2024. We VERIFY four ways to protect your eyes during this rare event.
A total solar eclipse will sweep across parts of the United States, Canada and Mexico on Monday, April 8, 2024, plunging millions of people into midday darkness.
There are four different types of solar eclipses, according to NASA: total, annular, partial and hybrid. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, completely blocking the sun.
If you miss this year’s spectacle, you’ll have to wait 20 years until the U.S. is in the path of the next one. But that total eclipse will only be visible in Montana and the Dakotas.
While it’s exciting to watch these rare events, looking directly into the sun can damage your eyes. We’re VERIFYING four ways to safely watch the total solar eclipse.
All of our sources say the only safe way to look directly at the sun during a total solar eclipse is through special-purpose solar filters, like eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers.
Be sure to always inspect your eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewer before use. If torn, scratched, punctured or otherwise damaged, NASA and the American Astronomical Society both say to discard the device. Also, be mindful that eclipse glasses are not the same as regular sunglasses.
“No matter how dark, regular sunglasses are not safe for viewing the sun,” NASA says.
If you normally wear eyeglasses, the American Astronomical Society says you can keep them on during the solar eclipse and put your eclipse glasses over top of them.
During the eclipse, the American Astronomical Society says to stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewer before looking up at the bright sun. After looking at the sun, you should turn away before removing your eclipse glasses or solar viewer — do not remove them while looking at the sun.
Reputable eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers should comply with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. Filters that are ISO 12312-2 compliant not only reduce visible sunlight to safe and comfortable levels but also block all but a tiny fraction of solar ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation.
The National Park Service says all solar filters that are ISO 12312-2 certified should have the manufacturer’s name and address printed somewhere on the product. However, scammers may copy this label so the American Astronomical Society says the best thing to do is purchase one from a reputable vendor. The Exploratorium recommends that you do not buy eclipse glasses on Amazon or other third-party sites.
“Unscrupulous people have been selling glasses that do not meet the international standard for filters that allow for direct viewing of the sun (even though they are sometimes marked as such). These counterfeit glasses could damage your eyes,” the Exploratorium says.
Visit the American Astronomical Society website for a list of reputable solar eclipse viewer and filter vendors.
It is never safe to look directly at the sun with the naked eye, according to the Exploratorium, because excess UV radiation from the sun can damage the eyes. That’s why it’s necessary to use special-purpose solar filters to watch a solar eclipse.
However, the National Park Service says a total solar eclipse is the only type of solar eclipse where viewers can momentarily remove their solar filters for the brief period of time when the moon completely blocks the sun and it gets dark, which is known as the total phase.
But the American Astronomical Society says this only happens if you’re inside the narrow path of totality. Click here to see if you’ll be in the path of totality on April 8.
“You can view the eclipse directly without proper eye protection only when the moon completely obscures the sun’s bright face – during the brief and spectacular period known as totality,” NASA says. “You’ll know it’s safe when you can no longer see any part of the sun through eclipse glasses or a solar viewer.”
The total phase only lasts two to four minutes, depending on your location in the viewing path, according to the National Park Service. As soon as the bright sun begins to reappear, the federal agency says you should reapply your eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewer to watch the remaining partial phases of the eclipse.
Also, if you are watching an entire eclipse outside, you may be in direct sunlight for hours. NASA recommends wearing sunscreen, a hat and protective clothing to prevent skin damage because the sun will be very bright.
NASA and the National Park Service say to never look at the sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars or other optical device. That’s because these devices require different types of solar filters that must be attached to the front of the device in order to safely watch a solar eclipse.
“Viewing any part of the sun through a camera lens, binoculars or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury,” NASA says.
So long as the camera, telescope or other optical device is equipped with a proper solar filter, you don’t need to wear eclipse glasses or use a handheld solar viewer while looking at the solar eclipse. NASA says these solar filters do the same job as the eclipse glasses to protect your eyes.
NASA recommends seeking expert advice from an astronomer before using a solar filter with any of these optical devices.
If you don’t have eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer to watch the total solar eclipse, NASA recommends using an indirect viewing method, such as a pinhole projector. A pinhole projector is an object with a small opening that projects an image of the sun onto a nearby surface.
Pinhole projectors can be made using several household items, such as a cardboard box or an index card with a hole punched into it. You could also use a pasta colander, a straw hat or anything else with a bunch of small holes in it, according to the American Astronomical Society.
Hin Cheung, Ph.D., a clinical assistant professor at the Indiana University School of Optometry, suggests forming a waffle pattern with your fingers to make your own pinhole projector.
“With your back toward the sun; the small holes between your fingers form a pinhole effect, and that projects an image of the sun on the ground. As the eclipse occurs, you’ll see the projected image of the sun going from round to a crescent shape,” Cheung says.
NASA notes to make sure you do not look directly at the sun through the pinhole. The Exploratorium shares more tips on how to make other do-it-yourself pinhole projectors on its website.

Employees at Tom’s Watch Bar were expecting around 400 people to watch the game.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers fell short of winning Super Bowl 58, but local fans and businesses are thankful for the exposure the 49ers playoff run provided.
Fans packed Tom’s Watch Bar in downtown Sacramento to watch the Kansas City Chiefs and 49ers battle it out.
Employees at Tom’s Watch Bar were expecting around 400 people to watch the game.
“Turnout is great,” said Joe Ortiz, who is the operating manager at Tom’s Watch Bar.
The venue opened October 2023. Ortiz said they have been looking forward to this Super Bowl Sunday for two weeks.
“Business is great. We are expecting today will be one of the busiest days since we have opened, and it delivered for sure,” said Ortiz.
Over at Barwest near J and 28th streets, they expected around more than 200 fans coming and going throughout the game.
“We are selling a lot of food and drinks,” said Ryan Gearing, who is the assistant manager at Barwest. “There is not really a price tag that you can put on it. It is just good to have everybody out here and get exposure for Barwest.”

LAS VEGAS (AP) — With the run she’s having, how could Taylor Swift be on anything other than the winning side?
She embraced her boyfriend Travis Kelce and the couple locked lips on the field at Allegiant Stadium after his Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in the Super Bowl.
Moments earlier, Swift smiled with her eyes looking misty from tears as she stood next to Kelce’s mother while he held aloft the Lombardi Trophy, shouting “Chiefs nation!” and bellowing a chorus of “Viva Las Vegas.”
Minutes before that, she was smothered by celebrity suite mates, who at various points included Blake Lively, Ice Spice and Lana Del Rey, when the Chiefs scored the winning touchdown in overtime, set up by a key reception by Kelce for a first down.
It was the second straight Super Bowl win for the Chiefs, but the first since Swift became fan-in-chief. She and Kelce began dating shortly before the season started.
It completes an epic stretch for Swift, who won album of the year a week earlier for a record fourth time at the Grammys, where she also announced a new album dropping in April before jetting off to Japan for a series of stadium shows.
Soon after flying halfway around the world to get to the game, she strolled through security to enter the stadium along with Lively, Ice Spice and her mom, Andrea Swift. She cuddled with Lively during Post Malone’s performance of “America the Beautiful” and won what appeared to be a beer chugging contest, slamming her cup down to an appreciative roar from the fans.
She was spotted talking to Kelce’s brother, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in one of the private boxes that reportedly cost more than $1 million. Del Rey joined the celeb-packed suite in time to catch Usher’s halftime show.
Swift flew on a private plane across nine time zones and the international date line from the last of four shows at the Tokyo Dome to arrive about two hours before kickoff. The time change allowed her to land in Los Angeles and make the final hop to Las Vegas.
The 14-time Grammy winner walked in wearing a black outfit with a red jacket slung over her shoulder, apparently getting the memo from Kelce and many of the Chiefs. He wore a shimmering black suit, quarterback Patrick Mahomes wore a sharp black suit of his own, and even Chiefs coach Andy Reid wore a black blazer as the Chiefs leaned into the role of the villains.
“Anti-Hero” also happens to be the lead single from Swift’s Grammy-winning album, “Midnights.”
“She’s unbelievable. She’s rewriting the history books herself,” Kelce said a day after the Grammys. “I told her I’ll have to hold up my end of the bargain and come home with hardware, too.”
Swift began dating Kelce after he said on his “New Heights” podcast that he had tried and failed to give her a friendship bracelet during her performance at Arrowhead Stadium. Kelce then invited her to watch him perform at the home of the Chiefs, and she surprisingly showed up for their Week 2 game against Chicago.
Swift soon became a regular at games, both home and away, frequently sitting with Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Swift occasionally brought along friends, including Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds.
“Having Taylor as a new Chiefs fan is very unique,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said during Super Bowl week. “I don’t ever do an interview without someone asking me about it. I think a lot of players and coaches on the team are in the same boat. The most important thing is we’re happy for the two of them that they have found each other and have such a special relationship.”
There was plenty of star power besides Swift for the NFL’s marquee night. Usher’s halftime show included guest performers Alicia Keys, Ludacris and Lil Jon. Reba McEntire sang the national anthem. Beyoncé, who was also at the game, appeared in a commercial and dropped a pair of new songs in the second half.
Few were under a brighter spotlight than Swift, though. Her dash from Tokyo, where she promised fans that “we’re all gonna go on a great adventure,” had Swifties around the world watching online flight trackers, while her boyfriend seemed to get as many questions about his relationship as the game during the run-up to kickoff.
Asked to explain the intense interest, Kelce replied: “I think the values we stand for and just who we are as people — we love to shine light on others, shine light on the people that help and support us, and on top of that, I think we both just love life.”
Kelce and Swift won’t have a whole lot of time together to celebrate. She is due back across the Pacific later this week. The international leg of her Eras Tour resumes Friday night in Australia with the first of three shows at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
“This week is truly the best kind of chaos,” she posted Wednesday on Instagram.

It’s also worth noting that if this extra point kick was not blocked, the fourth quarter likely could have ended with a 20-19 win for the Niners.Instead, Butker’s 27-yard field goal helped keep the Chiefs alive.Jennings joined Nick Foles as the only player to throw a touchdown pass and catch one in a Super Bowl.
