    Press Release

    updated: May 31, 2017

Ocrolus, the emerging leader in bank statement review automation, today announced its partnership with Senior Planning Services, a nationally recognized Medicaid application processor. The partnership will enable Senior Planning Services (SPS) to more efficiently conduct bank statement reviews for large nursing home chain clients and others. Medicaid-Genius, a software product powered by Ocrolus, will now be an embedded part of the SPS workflow.

The Medicaid application process can be daunting for families who have loved ones in need of long-term care. Senior Planning Services streamlines and simplifies this process from A-Z, offering a turnkey solution to healthcare facilities, elder law attorneys and families. The eligibility process includes a federally mandated “five-year lookback” in which hundreds or thousands of pages of bank statements must be reviewed for each applicant. With Ocrolus providing 99+% accurate, automated bank statement analysis, SPS will be able to scale more efficiently.

“Senior Planning Services is a pioneer in the Medicaid world, providing a one-stop shop for anyone who wishes to have their Medicaid applications completed professionally and quickly at an affordable rate,” said Victoria Meakin, President and Co-founder of Ocrolus. “We are excited to accelerate the application process for SPS, which will in turn enable families in need to be awarded healthcare benefits sooner.”

The partnership with Senior Planning Services is another step forward for Ocrolus in the Medicaid space, as Medicaid-Genius has already been employed by elder law attorneys and government entities who process applications. In tandem with SPS, Ocrolus will now help nursing homes streamline Medicaid reimbursement cycles through automation.

“Ocrolus technology will help us scale to new heights,” said Ben Mandelbaum, COO and Managing Partner of Senior Planning Services. “With Ocrolus automating the most laborious part of the financial review process, our team will be able to complete more applications than ever before.”

  • Control Releases Square Integration

    Control Releases Square Integration

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: May 25, 2017

Control, a leading transaction analytics and alerts platform for SaaS, subscription and eCommerce businesses, has added an integration with Square.

As the first standalone analytics and reporting tool to integrate with Square, Control now offers merchants that accept payments online and offline the efficiency of seeing all their analytics on one dashboard, rather than having disjointed data that will require manual calculation.

“We are excited to be working together with Square. Square changed the way businesses accept payments, removing the friction that came with acquiring and setting up antiquated POS systems. The future of commerce for smaller businesses is a blend of online and offline. Teaming up with Square ensures that these operators have the analytics and business intelligence they need to grow their company.”

Kathryn Loewen, Founder and CEO of Control

“We are excited to be working together with Square,” says Kathryn Loewen, Founder and CEO of Control. “Square changed the way businesses accept payments, removing the friction that came with acquiring and setting up antiquated POS systems. The future of commerce for smaller businesses is a blend of online and offline. Teaming up with Square ensures that these operators have the analytics and business intelligence they need to grow their company.”

A 2015 study conducted by IDC found that a shopper who buys on both online and offline channels has 30% higher lifetime value than those who only participate on one channel. Monitoring the spending habits of customers is not only crucial for big companies, but for smaller ones too. However, smaller businesses don’t have access to all-in-one enterprise tools. They are restricted by price and size of staff. They use different softwares stacks to accomplish various tasks such as payment — arguably the most important task for any business of any size.

Through its integration with Square, Control becomes the cost-effective, time-saving solution for small to medium-sized business, doing business online and offline, needing critical data in real-time.

“Access to real-time data and insights is critical for any business, whether it’s learning more about your customers or tracking sales performance,” said Pankaj Bengani, Square’s Partnerships Lead. “We’re excited to give sellers more tools to run their business and take payments with Square.”

In addition to Square, Control also added John J. McDonnell, COO of Deep Labs — a transaction processing and risk management platform — to the board of directors. McDonnell has been in the FinTech sector for over 20 years. After McDonnell earned his B.A. degree with honors from Stanford University and his J.D. from UCLA law school, he held executive roles at Visa, CyberSource, Paymo (now BOKU), PaylinX and TNS.

Nevada to become 20th state to combat the BDS movement as bill heads to governor for signature

    Press Release

    updated: May 25, 2017

Organized by the Israeli-American Coalition for Action (IAC for Action), the Israeli-American community in Nevada successfully led a grassroots effort advocating against discriminatory economic boycotts of Israel. On Wednesday, the Nevada Assembly voted to pass SB 26, introduced by Lt. Governor Mark Hutchison, which declares that the State of Nevada may not contract with, or invest in, companies that boycott, divest and sanction (BDS) Israel for discriminatory or political purposes. The measure also applies to local governments in Nevada, including Las Vegas.

“Nevadans of all backgrounds made it clear that we reject BDS and its discriminatory practices,” said Neville Pokroy, Chair of IAC for Action Government Affairs Committee in Nevada. “Thanks to the leadership of Lt. Governor Hutchison, Assemblywoman Ellen Spiegel, and with support from our friends across the state in the Filipino, Hispanic, African American, and Christian communities, we told our legislators that this is not just an Israeli-American issue, it’s a Nevada issue,” he added.

“The BDS movement focuses on discriminating against businesses, organizations, and institutions simply for exercising their right to freely associate with Israel, or for being of Jewish or Israeli heritage. Nevada has strong economic ties with companies targeted by BDS in sectors like water sustainability, alternative energy, and cyber security. Allowing BDS to infiltrate this state would greatly disenfranchise Nevadans and harm our long-term economic interests.”

Dillon Hosier, National Director of State Government Affairs at IAC for Action

IAC for Action supporters personally visited legislators, sent thousands of letters, and made hundreds of calls expressing their growing concerns with international efforts to boycott Israel, one of Nevada’s major economic trading partners.

“The BDS movement focuses on discriminating against businesses, organizations, and institutions simply for exercising their right to freely associate with Israel, or for being of Jewish or Israeli heritage. Nevada has strong economic ties with companies targeted by BDS in sectors like water sustainability, alternative energy, and cyber-security. Allowing BDS to infiltrate this state would greatly disenfranchise Nevadans and harm our long-term economic interests,” said Dillon Hosier, National Director of State Government Affairs at IAC for Action.

The bill now moves to the desk of Nevada’s Governor, Brian Sandoval, for signature. Once the bill becomes law, Nevada will be the 20th state to pass anti-BDS legislation.

    • Since 2003, Israeli firms have invested $1.7 billion and created over 6,500 jobs in Nevada.

    • Several Israeli water tech companies are currently working in Nevada to secure the state’s water supply.

    • In 2013, Governor Sandoval led a delegation to Israel focused on strengthening economic ties with Nevada.

    • Governor Sandoval was a keynote speaker at Israel’s WATEC — world’s largest water tech conference.

Scott Garrett an Outside-the-Box Choice to Head the Export-Import Bank

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: May 24, 2017

Let Freedom Ring’s President, Colin Hanna, applauds President Trump’s nomination of former Congressman Scott Garrett to be president of the Export-Import Bank. As a proponent of limited government, LFR believes that it is healthy for all sub-cabinet agencies to be headed by someone who will honestly explore whether or not their agency is a necessary and proper component of the federal government.

As a seven-term former Member of Congress, he is familiar with the Ex-Im Bank through his experience on the House Financial Services Committee, which has oversight responsibilities for the agency.  While in Congress, Garrett was a frequent critic of the bank, calling it an example of “crony capitalism.” In a House floor speech only a year and a half ago, he said: “It turns the economy into a biased actor that uses your taxpayer dollars to tilt the scales in favor of its friends.”

As a proponent of limited government, Let Freedom Ring believes that it is healthy for all sub-cabinet agencies to be headed by someone who will honestly explore whether or not their agency is a necessary and proper component of the federal government.

    Colin Hanna, President

Yet the Ex-Im Bank may be uniquely useful to President Trump in implementing his international trade policies and in reversing some of the policies of the bank in the prior administration. “Without Ex-Im, you’re putting U.S. exporters at a competitive disadvantage, which make no sense when one of the top goals of the Trump administration is to increase exports,” said Bill Lane, retired global government affair director for Caterpillar.

Putting former Ex-Im critic Scott Garrett at the top of this institution in the Trump administration ensures that the bank’s actions are taken within the context of both sound economics and the principles of limited government.

Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Providers Cindy Whitaker and Mickey Geisler of Cortez, CO featured by National CACFP Sponsors Association.

    Press Release

    updated: May 23, 2017

When one door closes another one opens. Cindy and Mickey took that expression to heart when they opened their own child care center after the large center where they were co-workers decided to close their doors. Twenty-three years later, they are still working together as co-teachers, co-owners of ‘Lil Rascals Child Care. At ‘Lil Rascals they strive to create a love of learning the children can take wherever they go.

In the search for the right fit for their group of students, Mickey and Cindy have discovered a nutritional program through the state of Colorado that works alongside CACFP to be beneficial. With the Food Friend Program, they encourage every child to try a new food and vegetable each week. Even Cindy has tried new foods she is not accustomed to! They further their nutrition education by planting a garden and going to a nearby apple orchard.

“Every group of kids is different. We have to find what works for them and us as teachers to make everyone comfortable and able to learn.”

Mickey Geisler, Home Child Care Provider

Cindy and Mickey also use the Mighty Moves program for teaching physical education and understanding the important role it plays in a healthy lifestyle. The kids are encouraged to be outside as much as possible. This ranges from playing on a sledding hill in the winter to swimming in the summer. The kids have a climbing area, a place to ride bikes and play sports like soccer and basketball.

At Lil Rascals,  it is important the children have a healthy, happy day. Cindy and Mickey use puppets to teach social emotional skills such as how to deal with frustrations and finding a solution for problems. With expectations increasing every year in school, children need to be well-rounded and prepared beyond academics. With all of the learning taking place each day, Cindy and Mickey feel accomplished and at the same time honored that parents entrust the children to their care.

CACFP is an indicator of quality child care. When children are cared for by providers who are part of the CACFP program they are receiving the best nutrition available. Learn more about other CACFP providers featured in our Member Showcase at our website, www.cacfp.org.

Since 1986, the National CACFP Sponsors Association (NCA) is the leading national organization for sponsors who administer the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Ending Prohibition in NY State: Can It Be Done by Constitutional Convention?

Cannabis industry leaders gathered in Washington consider a novel tactic to legalize adult-use marijuana in NY.

    Press Release

    updated: May 15, 2017

As cannabis industry leaders gather in Washington, DC, to lobby the nation’s congressmen to relax federal laws prohibiting the sale and use of cannabis, medical marijuana and hemp, one group proposes a novel tactic to bypass the NY State legislature and legalize adult-use marijuana by a direct vote of the people in New York. Restrict & Regulate in NY State 2019 (RRNY) is holding a private briefing to explain the periodic mandatory vote in NY State on whether to hold a constitutional convention, or “ConCon.”

Not to be confused with a federal constitutional convention, New York is one of 15 states whose state constitutions require a periodic popular vote on holding a state constitutional convention. Thus on November 7, 2017, a sleepy off-year election, New Yorkers will go to the polls to find, buried at the bottom of the ballot, the question “Shall there be a convention to revise the constitution and amend the same?” If they say “no,” the process will end. If they say “yes,” a two-year process will be triggered, culminating in a popular vote on changes to the NY state constitution proposed by a convention to be held in April 2019.

“Our government, both in Washington and in Albany, is dysfunctional and unpopular, and in NY it is corrupt as well. The electoral college elected Trump but the people elected Clinton, and many inside and outside of our movement believe that establishment insiders rigged the primary system to deny Bernie Sanders an opportunity to run for President. The level of anger is palpable. The vote this November 7 in New York will be an early bellwether of what will come in 2018.”

Josh Alper, Events and Communications Committee Chairman

The last time NY voted yes on this question was 1967. Voters rejected this call in 1977 and 1997, but RRNY believes 2017 will be different. “The political and technological landscape is completely different today than it was 20 years ago,” said Josh Alper, one of the organizers of the briefing. “We live in an age of cellphones and social media, live-streaming and fake news. In 1997, the internet was only just taking off. In 1967, cellphones were barely imaginable.

“At the same time, use of cannabis has become mainstream. 56% of Americans say the use of marijuana is socially acceptable. Support for medical marijuana and hemp is through the roof. Our industry ran ballot initiatives in 9 states in 2016 and won 89% of them, and we bring millennials out to vote, largely because they find it shameful to keep people locked up and destroy their lives for doing something or possessing something that they see as harmless and commonplace. RRNY believes it is crystal clear that New Yorkers will turn out in much higher numbers than usual and they will vote to override the NY legislature on a number of issues, including cannabis, marijuana and hemp, by voting to have a state constitutional convention on November 7.”

The briefing will be led by Dr. Peter Galie, renowned scholar and author on the NY constitution, and followed by Ben Tulchin, pollster for Bernie Sanders in 2016. Dr. Galie will speak on the NYS Constitution, its history, the history of this mandatory ballot question in NY State and the results of previous NYS ConCons, while Tulchin will talk about how to shape campaign strategy using data-driven polling and social media.

The event is being held at The Phoenix Park Hotel in Washington, DC, on May 17, 2017. Seating is limited to 75. The event will be followed by Earl Blumenauer’s DC Comedy Night fundraiser (unrelated event, separate RSVP needed), featuring the Congressman and six of the Most Talented Members of Congress. Testing the outcome of a three-year-long national dialogue among 107 political parties and movements in the East African country of Sudan has begun with possible shocks to the political system

    Press Release

    updated: May 15, 2017

Ongoing political reforms in the East African country of Sudan are set to shift the political landscape of the region in historic proportions, even as analysts caution that the country could slide into a one-party rule with potential consequences of groupthink and absence of opposition.

In separate interviews with visiting American journalists in Khartoum, the Vice President, Engr. Ibrahim M. Hamid, and Foreign Affairs Minister, Prof. Ibrahim Ghandour, outlined measures to change the political environment in a country eager to warm up its relationship with Washington after 20 years of economic sanctions set to end in July.

“I think this is the largest inclusivity in the history of Sudan and largest government formation in the country.”

Prof. Ibrahim Ghandour, Foreign Affairs Minister

Apparently acknowledging the historic nature of this reform, Hamid remarked that the ruling party approved a two-term limit for office holders as part of the change to rewrite the political future of a region notorious for seat-tight leaders where political figures are forced out of office either by death or uprising. It is believed that the political reforms taking place in a region that witnessed the Arab Spring could be a strategic move to broaden the political space for more participation and transparency.

Engr. Hamid maintained that, going forward, at least 50% of its leadership must be composed of new leaders at all times, thereby paving the way for youths and women to join the political process. “Now we have 60% new leaders and at least 30% are women. Even in the parliament, 30% are women in the central government in Khartoum and in all 18 States of the country,” he stated.

Foreign Minister Ghandour described the current political experiment in Sudan as unprecedented and the most ambitious participatory government in the region. “One of the ways that have been used properly is inclusion, and this is why the national dialogue came into existence almost 3 years ago by the decision of the president in 2014 involving 107 political parties and movements talking to each other for almost two years and agreeing on recommendations that ceded 900 accommodations of issues of concern from politics to economy to governance to foreign policy,” the top diplomat stated.

He spoke of the nexus between a country’s domestic policy and foreign policy, stressing that the Bashir administration in Khartoum was determined to forge peace within the country and also with South Sudan government in what he phrased as the “price of peace.”

In the words of Sudan’s top diplomat “… for the price of peace, it has been too high to have part of the country to be lost and part of the people created a new country, and we continue talking to the rebels, including the people of Darfur,” as exemplified in the Abuja, Doha, and Addis Ababa rounds of talks.

Ghandour, who displayed apparent mastery of his job, spoke of the strategic importance of Sudan in the restoration of peace and security in the region and emphasized the shared bond among countries in the horn of Africa.

Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Provider Darlene Abraham of Baltimore, MD featured by National CACFP Sponsors Association.

    Press Release

    updated: May 15, 2017

Few people can say that they truly love what they do each day and could not imagine doing anything else. Darlene Abraham is fortunate to be one of these lucky few. Since 2001, she has operated her own home child care and started in the profession simply because she loves children and wanted to be around them. Enjoying the smallest of life’s milestones and striving to be a positive influence on the children in her care keeps her going day to day.

Part of being a positive influence is helping the children experience and try new ideas. Darlene takes this to heart when introducing the children to different cultures. For one month out of the year, they “travel” around the world to places like Poland, France, Spain and Australia. Through their travels, they learn about animals, music, games, and read various books about the culture. At each location, their passport is stamped and they’re ready to continue their journey. They extend their cultural studies by incorporating nutrition as well.

“When introducing a new food, try not to go too far from what they know and like. Find something similar that will help to broaden their palate.”

Darlene Abraham, Home Child Care Provider

At family style meals, Darlene encourages the children to pick out something they have not eaten before. When making a healthy pizza, the children must choose two new veggies to try and a new variety of cheese. Salads go beyond spinach and often include arugula or spring mix. Darlene even shops at different cultural grocery stores to try variations on products the children are already familiar with.

Learning about cultures starts within the community. The children walk around their neighborhood meeting neighbors and investigating their surroundings. Community events are emphasized and encouraged. By exposing the children to community and cultures, Darlene hopes the children learn about the world around them and develop skills to take with them as they grow.

Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Providers Michael and Faith Alexander of Baltimore, MD, featured by National CACFP Sponsors Association

    Press Release

    updated: May 11, 2017

While going to work in the medical field, Faith Alexander dropped her children off at a home child care. Almost every day, she would play with all the children, and soon came to realize she was in the wrong profession. Twenty-eight years ago, she created her own home child care center. Today, she and her husband, Michael, work together to create a family atmosphere and “one big happy family.”

Faith and Michael create this atmosphere through open communication and by welcoming parents into any and all activities. The intent is to create a partnership where everyone works together with children as the focus. A calendar is given at a parent orientation meeting that contains a majority of activities and a timeline for lessons. Faith makes sure to keep everyone up-to-date with reminders and enjoys sending out photos of the children throughout the day.

“We bring everyone into this home out of love. We not only nurture the children, but also try to nurture the parents and the family. If we do that, we help to create a well-rounded child.”

Faith Alexander, Home Child Care Provider

Poppy and Grandma, as they are known to the kids, encourage everything to be a learning experience. Nature walks to the park, trips to the zoo and story time all include counting, phonics, and shapes that the kids are constantly working on. They even try to incorporate each of the children’s interests into what they do, share those with the parents, and then are excited about seeing where it takes them.

Faith and Michael know they have succeeded in creating a loving atmosphere when the children they have cared for return to visit. As professionals and adults, they are excited to share accomplishments, successes, and even their own children. Providing a family environment for children truly gives Michael and Faith a purpose for each day and a feeling that their lives are blessed because of the opportunity.

Little-Known VA Program Saves Veterans Money on Energy Bills – Free VA Education Summit in Phoenix

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: May 10, 2017

The federal government has a little-known VA program that can save all veterans, reservists and active military money on their expensive summer energy bills, according to the not-for-profit veterans organization, VAREP.

Many Valley residents don’t know about the VA energy efficient program that can help anyone who served in the military convert their existing home into an energy efficient home, says  G-II Varrato – director of Government Affairs for Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals (VAREP).

“I speak to veterans and realtors all the time. They’ve never heard of this energy efficient program that can save Valley veterans, reservists and active military hundreds of dollars on their electric bills. Our VA Housing Summit on May 20th will educate potential home buyers and current home owners on how they can take advantage of this VA program.”

G-II Varrato , VAREP – Director of Government Affairs

“I speak to veterans and realtors all the time. They’ve never heard of this energy efficient program that can save Valley veterans, reservists and active military hundreds of dollars on their electric bills,” said Varrato. “Our VA Housing Summit on May 20th will educate potential home buyers and current home owners on how they can take advantage of this VA program that will save them money on their expensive electric bills.”

For the average 2,000 square foot home in the Valley, this energy conversion can save veterans roughly $300 a month on their AC bill from May-September, says Varrato.

How the Energy Efficient VA Program Works

The government created this energy efficient VA program as a way to help veterans and military families upgrade their homes so they are more energy efficient. Most homes built in Arizona before the year 2000 cost more money to cool throughout the scorching summers.

Older homes typically have single pane windows that contain gas inside the glass. Over time, the gas leaks from the windows, allowing the heat and sun’s UV rays to penetrate the home and incur higher energy costs. The VA program can also help with other home energy conservation changes, such as solar cooling and heating systems,  updated thermostats, caulking and weather stripping, which can keep the heat out during the summer.

For new home buyers, this VA energy efficient program can be added to their mortgage, allowing them to convert their home to a more energy efficient home before they move in. Existing home owners who served in the military can also benefit from the VA program by refinancing.

Free Veterans Housing Summit – Educates Valley Veterans on Energy Efficient VA Program

On Saturday, May 20th the Phoenix chapter of the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals (VAREP) is hosting a  Veterans Housing Summit  at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix.

Veterans will have the opportunity learn about this energy efficient program and other VA programs that can get them into a home – in many cases – for less than they currently pay in rent. Veterans, mortgage experts and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions regarding the VA Program and everything it offers.

    About VAREP

The Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing sustainable home ownership, financial-literacy education, VA loan awareness, and economic opportunity for the active-military and veteran communities.

ThaarTechnologies Introduces a New #ThaarJustice to Enforce Law, Justice and Human Rights

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: May 10, 2017

#ThaarJustice is a non-profit campaign aimed at raising awareness among people from all countries in the area of human rights, law and justice. It aims to help everyone who is subjected to injustice of any kind through social media participation. Per #ThaarJustice, published before 1/7/2017 (and if you follow @thaar on Twitter and @faristaie on Facebook), comments will be republished through all the social networking sites dedicated to this campaign to get more influence in the world public opinion.

Writing a simple sentence in the #thaarjustice will greatly benefit the support of justice, as it will be shared with us and their friends. It is an easy way to educate and raise awareness about injustice in the world, which will reduce crime, including terrorism, as the exchange of these messages on a large scale will force governments, including Iraq and its judicial systems to apply the principles and laws of justice in their countries and will force the countries to implement the law properly.

Over the last 30 days, London, St. Petersburg, Paris, Germany and many other cities around the world have been exposed to terrorism. This is the result of injustice and lawlessness in many countries. This calls for a serious and firm stand by respected journalists to push governments and judicial authorities around the world to act in accordance with the law and to apply law, justice and humanitarian regulations properly and in a complementary manner.

    Thaar Al-Taiey, Owner

Our goal is to involve society and encourage everyone to think about the important ideals of justice,” Thaar Al-Taiey said. If we succeed in activating #thaarjustice, we will publish a new website that seamlessly integrates social media tools into rich and effective social media pages and links them with international human rights organizations, UN organizations and human rights organizations to our community in a single location to promote digital communications to the community in new and innovative ways, and we hope that this will attract partners who may never have heard of “#thaarjustice” or who may not know what we are doing to our communities and allow us to communicate our message better to our current supporters.

Thaar said the idea of the campaign came after several countries were exposed to terrorist operations and after the outbreak of crime and non-accountability in many countries. The spread of crime and acts of terrorism in the world are all the result of injustice and the failure to apply law and justice correctly and the failure to apply the rules and regulations of human rights.

This will help greatly in preventing the spread of crime Including terrorism in many countries of the world. We may not in the twenty-first century tolerate such a violation of human rights and justice.

The injustice and lack of applying the law by the Iraqi courts or in any other country are fundamental to the spread of crime, including the terror crimes in all countries of the world. Standing with the right applying of the law will reflect positively on all countries of the world. This is the real responsibility of the respected media by standing with truth, justice, human rights and humanity.

Thaar added that those who have been subjected to injustice do not leave the matter; “There is no right to be lost if the successor demands.” The oppressed must try once and twice and insist on their demands until they get their rights and publish them in newspapers and international satellite channels and social media.

  • IEEE-USA TX Delegation Call on Congress to Support Investments in Research and Development

IEEE-USA TX Delegation Call on Congress to Support Investments in Research and Development

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: May 8, 2017

An IEEE-USA delegation from Texas traveled to Washington, D.C. to express the importance of research and development activities to the nation’s economic growth, competitiveness and national security.

The IEEE-USA TX delegation which included the current president of IEEE-USA Karen Pederson, president-elect Sandra Robinson, and current chair of the R&D policy committee Brendan Godfrey, joined with more than 150 scientists, engineers and business leaders who made visits on Capitol Hill as part of the Twentieth “Congressional Visits Day”, an annual event by the Science-Engineering-Technology Work Group on April 25 and 26.

“It’s demonstrably true that the United States owes a great deal of its remarkable economic success, to its people’s audacious spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as basic scientific research, which stood as a key enabler for the American industrial might and its lead in technological innovation.”

Mina J Hanna, Senior Application Consultant, Synopsys Inc.

The visit came only a week before Congress released the FY17 spending bill which includes funding levels for key federal science agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense Office of Science and Technology, the National Institutes of Health and NASA. All of which received increased funding above the FY16 level.

While visiting congressional offices, the IEEE-USA TX delegation discussed the importance of the nation’s broad portfolio of federal investments in science, engineering and technology to promoting our country’s prosperity and innovation. Most importantly, they provided a constituent perspective on the local and national impact of these programs and their significance to the Austin, Houston and Dallas metropolitan areas. Moreover, they spoke about the IEEE-USA legislative priorities that include taking active measures to strengthen America’s K-12 STEM education programs and improving America’s patenting and copyright system to keep it accessible to entrepreneurs and small businesses in the U.S.

More than 50 percent of all industrial innovation and growth in the United States since World War II can be attributed to advances pioneered through scientific research, with publicly funded R&D constituting the vital foundation for today’s scientific and technological progress. Achievements from federally funded science, engineering and technology include global environmental monitoring, lasers, liquid crystal displays, the Internet, among many other scientific and technical advances.

The federal government supports a unique research and education enterprise that fuels the American economy. This enterprise provides the underpinning of high-technology industries and expands the frontiers of knowledge in every field of science. Much of this research is carried out at academic institutions in Texas including The University of Texas system, Texas A&M, Rice University and The University of Houston and many other institutions across the country, ensuring knowledge transfer to future generations of scientists, engineers, mathematicians, physicians and teachers. Additionally, technology transfer from academic research adds billions of dollars to the economy each year and supports tens of thousands of jobs.

Supporting the innovative scientific enterprise of the United States has consistently enjoyed bipartisan support. CVD was a valuable opportunity for the IEEE-USA delegation to reiterate the paramount importance of our lawmakers continuing their support for federally funded fundamental research despite tight fiscal constraints and the current tumultuous political climate. “It’s demonstrably true that the United States owes a great deal of its remarkable economic success, to its people’s audacious spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as basic scientific research which stood as a key enabler for the American industrial might and its lead in technological innovation.” said Mina J Hanna, a member of the delegation. He added “I am very pleased to see Congress making science a priority in the FY17 appropriations bill and I look forward for a similar prioritization in the FY18 bill.”

During the visit, U.S. Senators Cory Gardner (CO) and Gary Peters (MI) were awarded the George E. Brown Award for outstanding leadership in support of Federal R&D. They were recognized for their outstanding efforts to advance and promote science, engineering and technology on Capitol Hill.

The Science-Engineering-Technology Work Group is an information network comprising professional, scientific and engineering societies, institutions of higher learning, and trade associations. The sponsors represent more than one million researchers and professions in science and engineering. The Work Group is concerned about the future vitality of the U.S. science, mathematics, and engineering enterprise.

Traylor; co-founder of the National Organization for Women and the first African-American woman ordained an Episcopal priest Anna Pauline Murray; and Howard University alumna and U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris.

“These remarkable honorees embody the spirit and aspiration that guides Howard’s mission of excellence in truth and service.”

Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick, Howard University President

“These remarkable honorees embody the spirit and aspiration that guides Howard’s mission of excellence in truth and service,” said Howard University President Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick. “We are pleased to honor for the first time a distinguished panel comprised of all women.  As we celebrate our Sesquicentennial, we also embrace and recognize the sterling contributions of women all over the world and certainly here at Howard University. These women dedicated their talents and lives to improving the world and all lives.”

    This year’s honorees include:

Senator Kamala D. Harris who will receive the President’s Medal of Achievement, having received the honorary Doctor of Laws in 2012. A lifelong public servant and civil rights leader, U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris was the first African-American and first woman to serve as Attorney General of California and the second African-American woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate in history. Harris served two terms as district attorney of San Francisco. Defeating a two-term incumbent, she was first elected DA in 2003 and was overwhelmingly re-elected to a second term in November 2007.

Maureen Bunyan will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Bunyan is an award-winning journalist and news anchor who is a founder and board member of the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), and a founder of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). Anna Pauline “Pauli” Murray will be posthumously recognized with an honorary Doctor of Laws. Murray, a 1944 Howard University School of Law graduate, was a quiet force behind some of the most iconic civil rights and social justice events of the 20th century.  Thurgood Marshall regarded her book, States’ Laws on Race and Color, as the “bible” in crafting his arguments for Brown vs. Board of Education. Along with Betty Friedan and 30 others, Dr. Murray was a founding member of the National Organization for Women. One of the last achievements of her remarkable life was to be the first African-American woman ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1977.

Eleanor W. Traylor will receive an honorary Doctor of Letters. Traylor is a graduate professor of English and acclaimed scholar and critic in African-American literature and criticism. Dr. Traylor obtained a B.A. from Spelman College; an M.A. from Atlanta University; and a Ph.D. from Catholic University, where she pursued her interests in African-American literature and mythology concentrating this focus in a dissertation on Richard Wright. She later received a Merrill Scholarship to the Stuttgarter Hochschule in West Germany and a research fellowship to study at the Institute of African Studies in Ghana and Nigeria.

Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Provider Belinda Mercer of Baltimore, MD featured by National CACFP Sponsors Association

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 13, 2017

Belinda Mercer took an interesting path that led her to home child care. After 25 years in training adults in the banking industry, she decided she wanted to ‘train’ preschool children. Her desire was to set up a home child care where children are loved and respected so Belinda opened Postive Images of Love. This is not just a name, but also a philosphy. Belinda is teaching the children how to love, care and be respectful of the people around them, in addition to learning basic preschool skills.

In every aspect of her home child care, Belinda tries to maintain that positive image, including food and nutrition. She believes that a healthy diet can work “miracles” in children—changing them not only physically, but mentally and academically as well. The children read books, see videos, and review nutrition daily. Her strategy is simple as she tries to relate food to items or ideas that kids are already familiar with such as a color or shape they are studying. When learning about foods, she always tries to get them to take it one step further by asking what foods they could make with a specific fruit or vegetable. CACFP is an indicator of quality child care.

“If you give up on getting the children to taste new food, they will too. I don’t give up.”

Belinda Mercer, Home Child Care Provider

At times, successes in asking children to taste new things can be few. Children are very good at telling you what they do not like, but Belinda does not give up. She asks that everyone at least take a bite and cooks the food in various ways to give the children different experiences. With older children as role models, she encourages younger children to taste new dishes with a positive conversation about the food.

Realizing the cost of food, Belinda joined the food program to achieve her goal of feeding the children healthy meals. She truly feels that without the food program she would not be able to provide the children with nutritious meals. Belinda considers it a privilege to be a part of CACFP which helps her better the lives of the children in her care.

CACFP is an indicator of quality child care. When children are cared for by providers who are part of the CACFP program they are receiving the best nutrition available. Learn more about other CACFP providers featured in our Member Showcase at our website, www.cacfp.org.

Innova Research to Speak on China’s Innovation Ecosystem at CSITF

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 11, 2017

Innova Research has been invited to deliver a keynote speech on China’s innovation ecosystem at China International Technology Fair, which will be held on 20th – 22th April at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition Center.  The fair and conference, jointly organized by the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Science & Technology, and Shanghai Municipal government, is one of the leading events to showcase newest technology innovations from companies, leading universities and research institutes, among others, in China.

An innovation ecosystem includes key innovators such as universities and research institutes, innovative companies, high-tech industry parks and university science parks, as well as other key players such as IP agents and investors. In China, government plays an important role in the innovation ecosystem as it holds large research funds, policies, and other resources, and all leading Chinese universities and research institutes are state-owned.

One of the main issues with China’s innovation ecosystem is the low commercialization rates of the IPs. In order to push up the IP commercialization rates, the Chinese government has been encouraging university graduates, overseas returned scholars, professors and other researchers to start their own businesses.  It also introduced substantial financial and policies to support these start-ups, which resulted in a wave of startups and a boom of incubators across the country. Nevertheless, the commercialization rate is still low compared with a large number of IPs generated in China each year. This phenomenon is more pronounced in universities and research institutes where commercialization of the IPs remains at a low single-digit percentage.

Richard Jun Li, Vice President of Innova Research and the speaker commented:” One of the main reasons for the low commercialization rates of the IPs among Chinese universities and research institutes is that the performance of the researchers in these institutes are mainly measured on papers they publish, not on the commercialization of the IPs. As a result, research topics are not selected on market needs, and the IPs receive less interest from industry players and investors. Innova Research has conducted multiple consulting projects for Shanghai government to improve the innovation ecosystem in the city, to help the city to achieve its goal to become a world innovation center. “
