    During arguably my most questionable style years (aka when I was in high school in the early 2010s), I had a burgundy peplum top that I swear I wore once a week at least. At the time, it was, to me, the perfect shirt, elegant and stylish with just the right level of drama. Even so, when the controversial silhouette was deemed “out” not long after, I shunned it. For years after, whenever I stumbled upon one of the hundreds of digital camera photos I took in it, I shuttered, traumatized by my own style choices.

    It wasn’t until a few months ago that the idea of wearing anything peplum-related even entered my mind. Inspired by two things—the U.K.-based brand Liberowe’s velvet, peplum lady jackets and Proenza Schouler’s hourglass-style peplum offerings from fall/winter 2022—I began to question all the undeserved hate I’d thrown at the peplum trend over the last decade. Modernized and stylized, the new-age versions that the aforementioned brands and more are introducing in recent years are more than worth a second thought, and in turn, a second chance.

    Ecommerce keeps getting more and more relevant to consumers’ day-to-day lives and is an increasingly essential component of corporate growth strategies. By 2026, Shopify predicts, global internet-fueled sales will exceed $8 trillion. That’s a more than 50% bump from 2021 figures, and no one quite knows where the ceiling might be.

    The ongoing planning challenge for businesses is that ecommerce isn’t necessarily the opposite of in-person buying: Plenty of consumers use digital sites and apps to springboard brick-and-mortar purchases. Conversely, it’s common for shoppers to try out products in a store, then buy the merchandise online. But in any case, ecommerce’s relevance and growth are on track to continue indefinitely.

    Here are 2023 trends in this space to consider:

    1. Digital marketers will seek and apply improved attribution models

    Attribution has become a huge sticking point for digital marketers. Let’s say your company’s marketing includes a mix of Facebook, Spotify and Google ads, along with social media posts and YouTube videos. But when a customer buys something from your ecommerce store, can you be certain where to attribute that sale?

    Many e-retailers work with a last-click attribution model that gives all credit to the site where the final click-through occurred. However, that last site might not have actually prompted the sale. It could have been made somewhere earlier in the attribution funnel, such as in a how-to YouTube video. By assigning more significance to the last-click site, it’s possible to wind up spending ad money where it doesn’t belong or worse yet: taking money away from a site that deserves a higher percentage of your overall spend.

    To help get more accurate conversion reporting, many providers now offer alternative options to on-platform attribution modeling. Some platforms can be integrated into your website and send real-time attribution tracking to a dashboard. This would allow you to see the ads, email, or SMS marketing visitors have viewed and track site events through to the point of conversion. This level of detail helps marketers figure out where to most efficiently spend advertising dollars.

    So far, ecommerce sellers have been forced to go through trial-and-error steps to feel good about attributions, and these machinations take time to produce enough information to make final decisions. With newer, all-inclusive attribution platforms coming onto the scene, marketers can focus their attention better.

    2. Providers will improve content quality

    Talks of recession haven’t yet stopped consumers from spending, but there’s increasing worry about them soon pulling back from unnecessary purchases. According to CFO Dive, the second half of 2023 is expected to bring a consumer spending slump as people tap into savings reserves.

    What does this have to do with ecommerce product content? Everything. Consumers habitually research products before making purchases. Exactly how many touch points are needed depends on the product, but without question, content sways their behavior.

    Though you’ll see text content upgrades this year, that form isn’t the only one on marketers’ minds. Expect to see a lot of video content incorporated into ecommerce stock-keeping unit pages and descriptions, too. A recent Wyzowl survey indicates that 73% of potential buyers want to learn through short videos: Accordingly, marketers are delivering it in droves.

    Not sure how to start with in-house video production? Add a personalized touch. You can also ask for and utilize user content on social channels. Ideally, any content should answer the pivotal question, “Why should I buy?”

    3. More ecommerce stores will offer subscriptions

    One way to keep shoppers buying again and again is through subscriptions. Not every store has that ability, but expect to see more of them, and quickly. Kearney research reports nearly half of all people who make weekly purchases online are open to subscriptions, and many already have at least one. Put simply, interest is high enough for digital marketers to take the plunge.

    The beauty of this model is its consistent revenue. Plenty of consumers take a “set it and forget it” approach to their subscriptions — a great opportunity to enjoy a little passive income that can bump up average customer lifetime value.

    To figure out if one could work for your business, study the journeys of frequent customers. Do they tend to buy the same product on a regular basis? If so, that’s a potential place for you to upsell them to a subscription, and adding a special discounted rate (à la Amazon) can sweeten the deal.

    Coined by TikTok as “weird-girl style,” the aesthetic isn’t one to be ashamed of. In fact, it’s one that’s celebrated—fashion ecosystem willing or not. While searches for minimalist designer labels have flourished over the last few years and elevated basics are more shoppable than ever, a newfound crowd has embraced their inner kookiness.

    Relying on intentionally clashing articles of clothing, colorful prints, and elaborate textures, the weird-girl aesthetic is a delectable lesson in personal style. It’s an Icee slime that TikTok can’t stop digging its hands into over and over, each time drawing out more questionable fashion choices that somehow look decent. You can trace the origins back to Harajuku—a student neighborhood in Tokyo bursting with counter-culture movements and subversive style. Although it wasn’t considered weird-girl style then, photographer Shoichi Aoki popularized the community’s eccentric sense of self, culminating in Fruits magazine, a first-of-its-kind street style publication featuring cool people and their cool clothing. The result? A living, breathing movement of dressing oddly just for the sake of it (and eventually cultural-appropriation vibes from Gwen Stefani). 

    Weird-girl clothing doesn’t necessarily need to follow a set list of rules, silhouettes, and cuts to be deemed as such. Both high-cut underwear as pants and two-headed-teddy-bear bags fall under the style umbrella. Like most things, though, you only have to look at Bella Hadid to figure out what all of the hoopla is about. The supermodel is known for her liberal street style, often composing it herself. On her roster are colorful crochet beanies, hiking sneakers, alien-inspired sunglasses, and accessories so bejeweled they would make Paris Hilton do a double take.

    At this point, it’s important to acknowledge the elephant in the room: Is it a ‘fit, or is she just skinny? While the weird-girl aesthetic has nothing to do with race, social class, or body type, it’s undeniable that certain things are heralded as the peak of style on thinner body types and scoffed at when worn by others. Hadid can certainly wear men’s boxers as pants in the middle of winter, but according to some people on the internet, non-white, non-skinny people can’t.

    In the midst of navigating where I’m heading and where I’m off to next during fashion week in New York (I do, in fact, live here, but getting lost remains my specialty), I make it a point every season to scope out the cool items that everyone is wearing, specifically looking for ones that pop up again and again.     Throughout time, there have been debates about the importance of fashion. Some find it ripe with frivolity. Others see it as a pivotal part of the culture woven into society’s fabric. While my own beliefs fall into the latter, I can sometimes understand why others may consider the matter of sartorial choices less than serious. There are, after all, so many new trends that can feel “unnecessary” at a time when so much is happening in the world that requires our attention. And while I’m an ardent believer in the importance of staying informed, I have to admit that one trend is top of mind for me: statement hats. 

    Of course, hats have been around for centuries, and every few seasons, we see a specific style surge in popularity again. Nevertheless, as designers released their spring 2023 collections, it became evidently clear that this trend was demanding our attention. Across the board, over-the-top and often oversize hats that some might even describe as “frivolous” were spotted at various fashion houses. It was, in a way, the greatest indication of the times—with so many things in the world fighting to be noticed, of course, the most attention-seeking accessory trend would emerge.  

    So to chronicle that emergence, I’ve done a deep dive through recent runway collections and Instagram imagery to show how statement hats managed to catch our awareness again. Plus, I’ve identified the six hat styles that will be big this spring. Prepare to embrace your inner drama queen because these hats will demand them to heed.

    And while many business owners feel this trend only applies to energy or high-polluting industries, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Modern consumers are interested in green and ethical sourcing at all levels of the supply chain. From how factories are powered to the treatment of labor to how the final products are packaged, every step in the process could be a potential marketing goldmine (or a PR nightmare).

    3. Employee/employer relationships will continue to change

    Few things in the post-pandemic world changed as dramatically as work. And while corporate leaders see this shift as a major threat to their productivity, smaller enterprises may be able to capitalize on new employment trends.     Deloitte recently published a great article on the true value of the customer experience. It highlights how much has changed regarding what customers look for in a business, product, or service. Indeed, while price point and quality are still very important, modern consumers tend to identify with the brands they use in the same way they might identify with a friend or significant other. For this reason, they crave experiences that bring them and their brand “closer together.”

    This can be as simple as including personalized or exclusive items with your products or streamlining the buying experience. Whatever the case, the goal is to make your customers feel special, boosting loyalty and encouraging them to promote your brand to others. Of course, technology will also play a pivotal role in this process. From recommendation engines and automated after-sales support to 3D dressing room experiences, the more you can offer your customers, the better.

    5. Everything will be affected by economic factors

    The world entered 2023 with a war in Ukraine, an energy crisis in Europe, and record inflation nearly everywhere else. While these might seem like problems “for the big guys,” every single business will be affected by these factors in the coming year. Whether it comes from late supply shipments, increased fuel costs, or overpriced products, we’re all likely to feel some economic pinch.

    Without a crystal ball, the only real solution to this problem is for business owners to map out their entire supply chain and identify any parts that might be at risk. Where is your manufacturing done? Who handles your shipping? Are any of the materials in your products susceptible to supply chain problems? If your business is more service-oriented, will it be affected by inflation, energy prices, or demand decay? The more you know now, the better you can be prepared later.

    Every new year presents new challenges for entrepreneurs and business owners. But in the end, that’s all they are! With a little preparation and a commitment to staying on top of industry news, you can put yourself in a position to weather any storm. As a result, economic growth is stifled, compounding the problem of inflation and the rising cost of living. A transition to 2023’s economy will consistently fulfill these intricately connected components.

    The lasting impact of inflation

    The combination of inflation and a shortage of skilled labor led to a profound economic shock with sharp increases in the cost of utilities, fuel and food. Fortunately, price hikes have begun to settle. For instance, while the cost of shipping a container from China reached a peak of $20,000 during the pandemic, it’s returned to a comfortable $3,000.

    When consumers hear news of these price corrections, it’s reasonable for them to assume a reduction in the cost of goods will soon follow. Unfortunately, as procurement experts know all too well, moves have already set the dominoes in motion. Businesses were still tasked with transporting goods when prices were at an all-time high, meaning the supply chain and the economy continue to feel the impact; however, this is expected to dissipate toward the end of 2023.

    Historically, we’ve seen periods of rigorous negotiation before. The trouble is, it’s not simply an issue of cost this time. We face shortages of critical supplies — like the semiconductors needed by car manufacturers to build vehicles — which changes the game entirely.

    Unlike in years past, entering the new year with a focus on procuring items for the lowest cost isn’t going to be an effective strategy. Supply chain issues and logistical costs compound budgeting issues for procurers.

    After all, a low price means nothing if your purchase orders aren’t consistently fulfilled — instead, the people who thoughtfully balance price with surety and security will come out on top.

    Furthermore, this generation of shoppers favors brands that represent their values, making ESG efforts imperative for today’s businesses.

    Organizations must find ways to respond meaningfully to these macro themes, despite all else that is happening. While it might not seem like a pressing issue to some, committing to ESG is an investment worth making in the coming year.

    Leveraging and automating

    When it comes to efficiency and production, the skills shortage will continue to impact our economies in various ways. However, it’s up to businesses to find ways to ease the burden, which will likely entail the adoption of additional technology. Companies will continue to automate tasks, but at an accelerated rate, allowing them to shift the human labor they do have into areas where their time and talent are better leveraged.

    We already see these changes at scale. For instance, at the airport, you no longer have multiple personnel standing around to check long lines of passengers and passports; now, there’s a designated location to scan them yourself.

    Meanwhile, administrators moved those employees to other critical areas of operation that couldn’t automate. Likewise, more grocery stores are adopting self-checkout so workers can shift from registers to stock rooms. Across industries, this shift is already in motion.

    Retraining and developing

    As more businesses reallocate the human labor available, we also see more significant investment in that workforce. For instance, if a company has a reliable team hired for one job and is now needed to do another, it will require training to develop the necessary skills to perform well in its new role.

    It’s expected that more businesses will retrain their existing workforces in the coming year, which may have a small impact on the current skills shortage. However, European countries with shrinking populations will not solve the labor shortage with corporate training sessions alone.
