HOUSTON – Takeoff wasn’t from the Houston community, but it’s clear that he was loved by Houstonians.
Some of the mementos fans brought to a growing memorial could be found near the shooting scene as many offered condolences and called for peace.
The deadly incident appears to have started off as a heated exchange of words.
In the video sent to us by TMZ, rapper Quavo of the internationally known hip-hop group Migos can be seen speaking intensely outside of 810 Billards and Bowling on San Jacinto Street in downtown Houston, as a man said to be Takeoff stands nearby.
Around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning gunfire started blasting off. At least three people were shot, but Houston police confirm 28-year-old Kirshnik Khari Ball, better known as Takeoff, was the one person killed.
“Migos in general changed the whole music industry,” one fan said.
He was one of several who came together at the memorial in honor of the Atlanta area native.
“It’s just really sad to see,” he added.
“Another one, almost like DJ Khaled man… another one. It’s just senseless,” another fan said.
“I’m at a loss for words because I feel like I’m at this moment in time like why now why him?” another fan asked.
Meanwhile, community leaders reiterate what’s become an all too familiar call for change.
“He represented our future, and to lose your life due to gun violence is absolutely absurd. We can not continue to allow this to happen in a community like ours,” said Bishop James Dixon, Pastor of the Community of Faith Church and president of Houston NAACP.
Houston police said security guards who were at the event before the shooting heard the gunfire but reportedly did not see who did it. They are reviewing surveillance footage and asking anyone with information to come forward.

An autopsy has determined that rapper Takeoff died from gunshot wounds to the head and torso following a shooting early Tuesday morning outside a private party at a downtown Houston bowling alley, authorities said Wednesday.
The announcement — following an autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences — comes as police are still seeking the public’s help in tracking down the person or persons responsible for the rapper’s death.
Takeoff’s primary cause of death was listed as “penetrating gunshot wounds of head and torso into arm,” and his manner of death was called homicide.
Takeoff, whose off-stage name was Kirsnick Khari Ball, formed one-third of the Grammy Award-nominated rap trio Migos with uncle Quavo and cousin Offset from suburban Atlanta.
The 28-year-old rapper was killed around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday when gunfire erupted outside of 810 Billiards & Bowling following a private party.
Investigators are looking to speak with the 40 people who attended the party and fled after the gunfire, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said in a news briefing Tuesday.
At least two people discharged firearms, according to Finner. Two others were hit by gunfire but had non-life-threatening wounds and went to hospitals in private vehicles, he said.
Finner said Takeoff was “well respected,” and there was “no reason to believe he was involved in anything criminal at the time.”
Migos’ record label, Quality Control, mourned Takeoff’s death in a statement posted on Instagram. The statement said senseless violence “has taken another life from this world and we are devastated.”
The bowling alley is in a three-story Houston retail complex with high-end restaurants and a House of Blues, and is near a Four Seasons hotel.
Fans had created a memorial with roses, candles and a teddy bear on the first floor of the retail complex.
Takeoff’s killing came as Houston was in the spotlight, with the Astros baseball team mounting the most-viewed World Series run since 2019. Also, crime has emerged as a major political issue in this year’s midterm elections.
In Houston, the mayor and police chief acknowledged such concerns while noting some violent crime rates are down from last year. Finner said he wants to meet with other hip-hop artists to talk about violence, although he did not say Takeoff’s killing had anything to do with his work in music.
Migos first broke through with the massive hit “Versace” in 2013. They had four Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, though Takeoff was not on their multi-week No. 1 hit “Bad and Boujee,” featuring Lil Uzi Vert. They put out a trilogy of albums called “Culture,” “Culture II” and “Culture III,” with the first two hitting No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
Offset, who is married to Cardi B, released a solo album in 2019, while Takeoff and Quavo released the joint album “Only Built for Infinity Links” last month.

Police said they have few leads in the fatal shooting of rapper Takeoff outside a private party at a downtown Houston bowling alley.

Most of the 40 people who attended the party at 810 Billiards & Bowling fled when the gunshots rang out, Finner said. That left police asking people to come forward and give statements and videos to investigators on what they saw and heard, even if anonymously, Mayor Sylvester Turner said.
At least two people discharged firearms, according to Finner. The two others who were struck by gunfire had non-life-threatening wounds and went to hospitals in private vehicles, he said.
“Let me just ask … that anyone who has information on the shooter or shooters to provide that information to HPD and let us solve this situation,” Turner said at a news conference Tuesday. “Let us bring justice to this family.”
Finner said Takeoff was “well respected,” and there was “no reason to believe he was involved in anything criminal at the time.”
Migos’ record label, Quality Control, mourned Takeoff’s death in a statement posted on Instragram.
“Senseless violence and a stray bullet has taken another life from this world and we are devastated,” the statement said, though police have said nothing about the gunshot being a stray. “Please respect his family and friends as we all continue to process this monumental loss.”
The bowling alley is in a three-story Houston retail complex with high-end restaurants and a House of Blues, and is near a Four Seasons hotel. Takeoff was pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:30 a.m. shooting. An Associated Press reporter observed a body loaded into a medical examiner’s van around 10 a.m., more than seven hours after the shooting.
Security guards in the area heard the shooting but did not see who did it, a police spokesperson said. A spokesperson for 810 Billiards & Bowling said the shooting took place after the alley closed and said the business is cooperating with investigators.
Several fans gathered across the street from the bowling alley. Isaiah Lopez, 24, said he rushed from his home in the Houston suburb of Humble after hearing Takeoff had been killed.
“He was one of our favorites, mine and my brother’s. It’s all we would listen to,” Lopez said as he carried a dozen roses he hoped to place near the site of the shooting. “As soon as my brother called me and said, ‘Takeoff is gone,’ I had to come over here and pay my respects.”
Thomas Moreno, 30, lives about five minutes from the bowling alley. He said he met Takeoff at an event at a Houston bar and restaurant in June and called him “a real nice guy.”
“I feel it’s just another good person gone too soon,” Moreno said. “This happens every day, but it hurts even more when it’s somebody so talented and so young.”

Quavo posted links Monday on his Instagram to his and Takeoff’s Halloween-themed music video, “Messy,” along with a video of him and his friends driving around Houston.

The rapper Takeoff, of the popular rap trio Migos, was shot and killed after attending a party in Houston, Texas, early Tuesday morning, his attorney and police confirmed. He was 28.
“Along with my firm, I am devastated by the tragic death of Kirshnik Ball, known to his fans as Takeoff,” said Drew Findling, the attorney, in a statement. “Takeoff was not only a brilliant musical artist with unlimited talent but also a uniquely kind and gentle soul. He will be greatly missed now and always.”
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner confirmed during a Tuesday afternoon press conference that Takeoff had been killed in the shooting. He urged any witnesses to come forward with information about what happened.

The shooting occurred around 2:30 a.m. local time at the end of private party that was being held at 810 Billiards and Bowling, police said. Police said that shortly after the party ended, an argument broke out that led to the shooting.
When officers arrived, they found Takeoff dead just outside the entrance to the bowling alley, which is located on the third floor of a larger complex, police said.
Two others, a 23-year-old male and a 24-year-old female, were wounded and hospitalized, according to police. They were able to secure private transportation to the hospital and both suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said. They remained hospitalized as of Tuesday afternoon, police said.

No suspects are in custody and police did not indicate any had been identified. An investigation into the shooting is underway and still in its early stages, and police have asked the public to report relevant tips as detectives review surveillance footage at the Houston venue along with video and photos from social media and party attendees.
At least two firearms were used in the shooting, according to Finner. About 40 or 50 guests attended the private party, according to police, and investigators believe the shooter or shooters had been in attendance.
Finner said that, while he did not want to speculate, there was no indication that Takeoff had been involved in “anything criminal” at the time of the shooting. Finner could not say whether or not Takeoff was the intended target of the shooting, or how many times he was struck.
Takeoff’s uncle and fellow Migos member, Quavo, 31, also appeared to have been in attendance at the party, but police would not confirm Tuesday afternoon if he was there.
Finner said he had spoken with Takeoff’s mother, who flew in from out of town, prior to the Tuesday afternoon press conference.

2 New Jersey police officers shot serving a warrant; gunman at large, law enforcement sources say

Two police officers were shot while attempting to serve a warrant in Newark, New Jersey, a law enforcement source told CBS News. The shooter, who remains at large, fired a rifle from either the roof or a window of an apartment complex, the source said.
The shooter fired a rifle from the rooftop or window of an apartment building, shooting one officer in the neck and the other in the leg, the source said.
The two officers were transported to a local hospital. The injuries to the two officers are not considered life threatening, CBS New York reported.
A SWAT team is currently at the scene, law enforcement told CBS News. The FBI is assisting in the investigation, sources told CBS New York.
The shooting occurred around 2 p.m. ET in an area roughly three miles form the center of the center.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy tweeted that he was aware and “monitoring” the incident as it unfolds.
“I am in touch with local authorities and the State is providing resources as requested,” he added. “We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe.”

Six people were injured in a shooting outside of a Pittsburgh church where a funeral was being held for a 20-year-old man who had recently been shot and killed, Pittsburgh Police Commander Richard Ford said. Two people, including one teenager, have been charged with attempted murder in connection with Friday’s shooting, authorities announced Saturday.
All six of the victims were in stable condition after the attack that Ford called a “targeted shooting.”
Ford initially reported that six people were shot. However, the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department later clarified that only five people suffered gunshot wounds, and the sixth person was wounded while trying to escape the scene.
Just after 12 p.m. Friday, police received a ShotSpotter tip that five shots were fired in the area of the Destiny of Faith Church, Ford said. Another alert came in shortly after about an additional 15 shots fired.
Police responded to the church, where a funeral was ongoing for John Hornezes, who was one of the three killed in a shooting in the city on Oct. 15, according to CBS Pittsburgh. The Friday shooting happened outside of the church, Ford said.
Four victims self-transported to the hospital, according to Ford. One person was transported from the scene in critical condition. A sixth victim had left the scene and was then transported to the hospital. One victim was taken to Pittsburgh’s Children’s Hospital while the others went to Allegheny General Hospital, Ford said. Their ages were not released.
The victim who was in critical condition was upgraded to stable condition, police said later Friday afternoon.
Police do not yet have a motive for the shooting, but Ford said “there’s reason to believe there was obviously specific people targeted.”
Ford added that there were “multiple” suspects and that police had “good video” of the incident.
Late Friday night, Pittsburgh Public Safety reported that two people of interest had been detained. On Saturday, the department announced that 19-year-old Shawn Davis and a 16-year-old boy had been arrested in connection with the shooting on charges of criminal attempted homicide, criminal conspiracy, aggravated assault and firearms charges.
“This is probably, in my pastoral ministry that I have been doing over 30 years, this has been one of the most devastating days of my life, I would say,” Rev. Brenda Gregg, the pastor at the Destiny of Faith Church, said during a Friday afternoon press conference.
The investigation is ongoing.

A 10-year-old boy was playing with a shotgun when it discharged, killing his younger brother, authorities in Houston, Texas, said on Monday.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at a press conference that they responded to an “awful incident” inside a Houston apartment complex, where they found an 8-year-old boy who had been shot in the upper torso. His older brother had been playing with a shotgun in the apartment’s only bedroom when it discharged just after 3 p.m. on Monday, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The 8-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
The siblings’ 13-year-old brother was also in the apartment at the time of the shooting but was not injured, Gonzalez said. The three brothers were alone at the time of the incident.
The sheriff did not rule out possible charges, but said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
He stressed the importance of responsible gun ownership.
“We’ve talked in the past about the importance of safe storage, of securing weapons, responsible gun ownership,” Gonzalez said. “This appears to be a tragic situation of what could happen when that doesn’t occur.”
It is not clear who owned the shotgun.
The sheriff also offered his condolences to the family.
“We know they’re extremely devastated by what was occurred out here this afternoon,” he said during the press conference.
The incident is part of a growing trend of tragic shootings in the U.S involving children.
According to data analyzed by advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, there have been at least 232 unintentional shootings by children in the U.S., resulting in 102 deaths and 142 injuries, in 2022.

Toddler expected to survive after being shot in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis police say a toddler was injured in a shooting Saturday night, but she is expected to survive.
Just after 10 p.m., police responded to reports of shots fired outside a residence in the 2200 block of Fifth Avenue North.

Police found the injured toddler inside a home and EMS transported her to a hospital. According to police, the victim is 3 years old and her injuries only required her to be held for observation at the hospital.
Neighbors on the scene say it’s a sight all too common for their area.
“It just needs to stop,” said Rahim Clark Saturday night. “People need to find better ways to solve problems instead of picking up a gun with switches on them, thinking you’re a man and running around out here shooting at people’s houses. There’s kids out here. I’m tired of seeing kids die every day behind y’all’s violence.”
Clark told WCCO-TV he heard more than a dozen shots.
“Sixteen to 20 shots,” he said. “You’ve got people firing at people’s houses. There’s kids in the house. That’s unacceptable.”
Police said homicide detectives came to the scene because of the potential seriousness of the injuries given the age of the victim.
“I’m frustrated,” said neighbor Jillain Woyee. “I’m frustrated that a child that didn’t deserve that was caught in the middle of what’s going on.”
Police have not reported any arrests.
Half an hour earlier, and about three miles away on the 3300 block of Colfax Avenue North, two teenagers were injured in a shooting. Both are expected to survive. Police did not say the two shootings were connected.

Students injured in shooting at St. Louis high school

At least two students were injured Monday morning in a shooting inside a St. Louis high school, authorities said. The shooting was reported just after 9 a.m. at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School, prompting hundreds of students to leave the building, many of them running.
St. Louis Public Schools said on Twitter that the shooter was “quickly stopped” by police. No further details about the shooter were immediately released.
The FBI said in a statement later Monday morning that there was no longer an “immediate threat” at the school. The district said the injured students were on the way to a hospital, but did not indicate how badly they were injured.
One student, 16-year-old Taniya Gholston, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch she was in a room when the shooter entered.
“All I heard was two shots and he came in there with a gun,” Gholston said. “And I was trying to run and I couldn’t run. Me and him made eye contact but I made it out because his gun got jammed. But we saw blood on the floor.”
TV reports said officers entered the area with guns drawn shortly after 9 a.m. Crime tape was placed around the school and some parents arrived to pick up kids and check on their safety.
Parents were urged to pick up their children at Gateway STEM High School.
Central Visual and Performing Arts High School is a magnet school specializing in visual art, musical art and performing art. The district website says the school’s “educational program is designed to create a nurturing environment where students receive a quality academic and artistic education that prepares them to compete successfully at the post-secondary level or perform competently in the world of work.”

I didn’t know if he was with the police. I didn’t know if he needed help. I didn’t know what was going on. So I slow down,” McKinney said.The decision to slow down led to one of the scariest moments of McKinney’s life. “He approaches my vehicle with a gaze of all ‘hey man I was wondering if you can give me a ride’ and then I see the gun,” McKinney said. “He enters the driver-side back seat door and immediately gets in.”The Pickens County coroner would eventually identify this person to be Thomas Christopher Wheeler.When Wheeler got in the car, McKinney said a gun was pointed at him. “And then he says put it in reverse and drive. Put it in reverse and drive or I’ll shoot you,” McKinney said.Mckinney said after that it was a blur. “It was at that point my children’s faces flashed before my eyes and I knew I wasn’t going with him and so I got out,” McKinney said. “I wasn’t gonna let him take me as a hostage. 8 people shot, wounded near Virginia’s James Madison University; suspect arrested

A suspect is in custody, authorities said, after a shooting near the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in the early morning hours Sunday left eight people wounded. All are expected to survive.
At approximately 2:20 a.m., multiple gunshots were fired into a crowd at an outdoor gathering near the JMU campus, Harrisonburg police said in a statement. Eight people, ages 18 to 27, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
On Sunday afternoon, police announced they had arrested a suspect, identified as 20-year-old Tyreaf Isaiah Fleming, on charges of attempted murder, aggravated malicious wounding, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, the city of Harrisonburg tweeted Sunday.
In a statement, James Madison University Police Chief Anthony Matos said the victims “are not students currently enrolled,” but that regardless, “it is important to keep them in your thoughts as they recover.”
There was no word on the circumstances that precipitated the shooting or a possible motive. Police said they are continuing to investigate the shooting to determine if any additional suspects were involved.

The Bogalusa Police Department said a 15-year-old was shot and killed outside of a football game on Friday night. Officers report that approximately 18 to 20 shots were fired and that there were three people exchanging gunfire. One of them was the victim. The shooting happened outside of the Bogalusa football stadium during a matchup between Bogalusa High School and Jewel Sumner High School.The police chief told WDSU the victim was initially taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died. According to a post on the City of Bogalusa’s Facebook page, the situation was quickly under control because of the strong police presence at the game.This is a developing story.
