    Nothing allows you to visualize just how much stuff you own quite like a move, something I happened to do last weekend. As expected, I was shocked to see the pure quantity of pieces I’d somehow stored in my 400-square-foot apartment when I went to pack up my belongings, most of which are fashion related in some way. But the most mind-boggling of all was my shoe collection. Knowing I can’t exactly bring 50+ pairs of sandals, boots, flats, sneakers, and more to my new space, I set out on a closet cleanout of epic proportions, and I didn’t do it alone.

    To help me get into the right mindset for the job at hand, I asked a few of my fellow Who What Wear editors to share the outdated shoe trends they are preparing to part ways with this season.     A few weeks ago, I found myself hanging out with fellow fashion editors after work. For most, any after-hours activity with colleagues may be conducted over cocktails, but for us, it was spent doing what we know best—shopping. We spent the evening shuffling through the sparkling marble floors of Nordstrom’s flagship store in New York City. While I hate to be biased because there are so many good Nordstrom locations worldwide, I have to say there’s something particularly magical about the Manhattan store. Maybe it’s because it has seven floors and six restaurants, or maybe it’s because there’s an entire floor dedicated to what I love most: designer shoes. 

    Arriving on this floor in Nordstrom for a shoe fanatic is akin to arriving in paradise. Everywhere you look, there’s something divine—just so many pairs of Fendi, Gucci, Prada, and Christian Louboutin shoes. While I only managed to stare at the shoes that evening, I did convince myself that I had to return and actually try on a few. So I decided to reach out to Nordstrom’s team to ask them if I could document trying on some of the buzziest designer shoes of the moment in-store, and luckily for me, they obliged.     I am what you might call a shoe person. I love shoes. I find them to be not only one of the most quintessential pieces in outfit building but also the most fun thing to shop for. But we’re not here to talk about heels or my supernatural ability to walk in them; we are here to talk about flats. I’ll admit I’ve never really liked flats. I’ve always thought they were safe and boring, and that is the last thing I want my style to be described as. But lately, I’ve opened up my very closed mind and started spotting flat shoe trends that we’re so chic even I had to try them myself.     Have you ever been scrolling through social media and suddenly realized that everyone on your timeline is wearing the same trend?     I should preface this by saying that, on an intellectual level, I was cognizant of the prevalence of metallics in fall/winter 2022 collections. Since their debut last season, they’ve not had continued prevalence in S/S 23, but they’ve strutted off the runway and into major city streets. And while it’s not hard to miss the rise in popularity this footwear has had (because they’re so shiny), it might be hard to get why.
