    Press Release

    updated: Feb 4, 2019

First3Years, a Texas-based nonprofit whose mission is to educate, advocate, and collaborate to advance the healthy development of infants and toddlers, will be hosting the first ever Baby Day™. Baby Day, taking place on February 8, 2019, will celebrate the first three years of a child’s life, acknowledging this incredible period of growth and brain development in infants and toddlers.

“Baby Day is the opportunity for us to emphasize and bring attention to the critical period of growth that infants and toddlers undergo in their first three years of life,” said First3Years Board Chair, Hilary Lynch. “It’s a chance for us to highlight how impactful everyday interactions are to this development and showcase the rewards of supporting young children, their caretakers, and the communities that play a role in their education.”

On Baby Day, First3Years will welcome more than 1,500 families across the State to celebrate and delight in how incredible the first three years of life are for laying a strong foundation for brain development, learning, and social-emotional well-being. A key partner of Baby Day is museums. We’ll be hosting Baby Day at:

    ·       Children’s Museum of Houston (Houston)

    ·       Perot Museum of Nature and Science (Dallas)

    ·       Botanical Research Institute of Texas (Fort Worth) – Mayor Betsy Price to welcome families

    ·       McKenna Children’s Museum (New Braunfels)

    ·       Thinkery (Austin)

Working with community partners such as Yoga n da Hood and UTDallas’ Center for Children and families, First3Years has created a day designed for bonding and meaningful play for babies, toddlers, and their parents. Baby Day is part of a larger movement to bring increased awareness and resources to the first three years of a child’s life when investments have been shown to have the greatest social return, and early brains are wired for learning. Families will be invited to continue their engagement throughout the year through the Baby Day website which features additional interactive learning activities, videos, and developmental science that parents can use in their daily play with the baby. For more information, please visit https://babyday.us/special-events.

The Future Looks Brighter: Youth-Led Nonprofit Organization Helps Thousands of Colorado’s Homeless

    [ad_1]

Don’t give up on the next generation. Student-run nonprofit is working to serve Colorado’s homeless while still in high school.

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 4, 2019

Helping the Homeless Colorado is a Denver-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those individuals within the community who face homelessness. The organization was founded by high school students, Alyssa Gorkin, Matine Khalighi, and Ali Ginsburg in 2016. Inspired to bring together their community, this group of youth looked towards its members who were left behind. Built firmly on a foundation rooted in advocacy and education, Helping the Homeless Colorado works to create a comprehensive structural solution to tackle this issue at its core and putting forward relieving efforts. Taking this one step further, the group works to educate and empower other youth to take a personal stake in the community’s future.

The first pillar of action addresses advocacy. This pillar is fundamental in bringing to light policies that will engage our community in proactive and supportive activities that bring awareness to a system filled with missing policies. Many times, there is a lack of policy governing certain socioeconomic groups. By nature, this allows for the recognition of people as less than or unimportant in our communities.

Education, the second pillar, plays a vital role in reshaping the public view on homelessness. By educating the public on the aspects of the issues that surround the homeless community, the group is able to peel back stereotypical perceptions of the homeless and focus on moving forward with effective social change initiatives within the community. Helping the Homeless Colorado puts a large emphasis on youth involvement in social change.

Lastly, Helping the Homeless Colorado’s overall goal is to alleviate those in the community struggling with homelessness. This is accomplished by dedicating efforts toward accessible resources and youth involvement in the group’s initiatives. The organization sets “outreach days” in which they pass out hygiene products, food, and winter clothing to the homeless. Also, in this pillar, the main objective is to help those youth who face homelessness in our communities. Through initiatives such as the Scholarship Program, this group has been able to help high school seniors make strides towards higher education, ensuring a more stable future.

Homelessness continues to be one of this country’s most intractable social issues. However, Alyssa Gorkin, Matine Khalighi, and Ali Ginsburg, as well as a constantly growing community of interested supporters, believe that it is up to them to reach out a helping hand to those in need. The organization is firmly rooted in the principle that this is their community and, as such, their responsibility. They believe that together we will be able to make tremendous strides towards a brighter future for our homeless population.

To find out more and get involved visit: www.helpingthehomelesscolorado.org. Email them at info@helpingthehomelessco.org. Follow them on Facebook, Instagram (@helpingthehomelesscolorado), Twitter (@_HTH_CO). Their mission is to create a comprehensive structural solution to homelessness that addresses the issue at its core and to empower our youth to be the basis of this change.

  • Out at the Fair® Expands to Five Fairs, Starts 2019 Tour Campaign

Out at the Fair® Expands to Five Fairs, Starts 2019 Tour Campaign

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Dec 3, 2018

Out at the Fair®, the Fair industry’s official LGBTQ+ festival, expanded to five Fairs in two states during 2018 and has initiated plans for its 2019 season. In addition to the San Diego County Fair – where it was originally launched – the festival is also now held at the California State Fair (Sacramento), Marin County Fair (San Rafael), and Santa Clara County Fair (San Jose) in California, plus the New Mexico State Fair (Albuquerque) in New Mexico.

In October, the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation became Out at the Fair’s fiscal sponsor, granting the festival non-profit status. The Foundation is one of the largest LGBTQ+ foundations in the country, and the sole community foundation in San Diego dedicated to the benefit of LGBTQ+ people. Companies and organizations interested in reaching the LGBTQ+ community in a family-friendly setting are invited and encouraged to show support of Out at the Fair® through a tax-deductible sponsorship or donation.

During their 2018 convention in Reno, Nevada, the Western Fairs Association, a leading trade organization serving the Fair industry in the western United States and Canada, presented Out at the Fair® – with its prestigious Barham Award, which recognizes innovation, quality, and leadership in the field of service.

According to “Out at the Fair” by Albert H. Fulcher of Gay San Diego, Out at the Fair “…has now turned into the largest “Out” gathering in Southern California region.”

“Out at the Fair has definitely become one of the highlights of summer in San Diego” – Sen. Toni Atkins President pro Tempore of the California State Senate

    About Out at the Fair®

In 2013, the “Unofficial Gay Day at the Fair” was held at the San Diego County Fair as a family-friendly celebration of the LGBTQ+ community; the festival was a success and quickly embraced by fairgoers and the community. One year later, it became an official Fair festival and renamed “Out at the Fair®” (“OATF”). During the following four years, the festival grew considerably in scope and breadth, garnering praise from community leaders and awards from trade associations, as well as expanding to two other fairs. What started as an outing by a group of friends in 2011 – as a simple Facebook check-in – is now the only official LGBTQ+ event in the Fair industry.

Through the years, OATF has gained the support of local LGBTQ+ community organizations, as well as local elected officials and businesses, at the various Fairs where the festival is held.

OATF includes a full day of entertainment featuring local LGBTQ+ performers, non-profit organizations exhibiting, the Newly Married Game, Diva Drop, Dunk a Hunk, Family Fun Hour, Eat a Gay Bug, flags representing the various LGBTQ+ sub-groups, and all-gender restrooms, and national talent, such as American Idol finalists David Hernandez and Keith London, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Chad Michaels, pop singers Pepper MaShay and Ricky Rebel.

In July 2017, after five years of increased success, OATF made the jump to the California State Fair in partnership with the Sacramento LGBT Center – as part of an expansion plan that intends to spread a message of diversity and inclusiveness to Fairs nationwide and abroad. In September 2017, OATF crossed state borders and welcomed fairgoers from Albuquerque and surrounding areas to the New Mexico State Fair, in partnership with Albuquerque Pride. In July 2018, the Marin County Fair in San Rafael was added to the roster. In August, the Santa Clara County Fair located in San Jose was added; in both cases, partnering with local Pride and LGBTQ+ organizations.

Dog Lodge Sanctuary, a Unique Concept for Providing a Life-Long Home for Senior/Special Needs Dogs Opens Its Doors: A Labor of Love Realized.

    Press Release

    updated: Nov 14, 2018

Dog Lodge Sanctuary is a Texas-based 501(c)(3) organization located on 60 acres in Hempstead, Tx. dedicated to providing a permanent home for senior and/or special needs dogs that otherwise might face a very bleak future but in the right environment can still lead a quality life. We are focused on providing a safe, loving, healthy and stable environment for our dogs so that they may know peace and dignity for the rest of their lives. The primary function of Dog Lodge is to come to the rescue of dogs that are, for all intents and purposes, considered “unadoptable” because of advanced age or because they have chronic illness or physical disabilities. The Sanctuary is an alternative to life on the streets, abuse, neglect, fighting, and euthanasia. Here is an opportunity for those dogs to be in a place where they can belong; where they can be happy, where all their special needs can be met – where they can love and be loved.

Dog Lodge Sanctuary is now open and operational. Founders Rick Laminack and Elaine Rosen have turned their passion into reality and have made a significant financial investment to open Phase 1 which consists of two buildings.  The first building holds the grooming room, laundry room, sanctuary office, food prep and storage area, and a 26’ x 80’combined training/therapy/exercise room.  The dog accommodations are in the second building along with a large living room for the dogs, a volunteer break room, and a private vet clinic for the convenience of our visiting veterinarians.

Recently quoted in Houston’s Pet Talk Magazine Rick and Elaine stated, “Our investigation ultimately helped us to identify our mission. On the surface, the “system” for handling homeless dogs that is in place not only in Houston but all over the country seems like it could work; meaning ideally, that homeless dogs are brought into a shelter or rescue and then rehomed.  But, as everyone knows, it’s not that simple.  The number of dogs that need rehoming is staggering so even if the system were able to run without a hitch; it would certainly be strained. What happens, for example, when a dog enters the system, and it is difficult or even impossible to rehome or, at least rehome in a timely manner?  The system backs up, fills up and slows down. Dogs that might otherwise come into the system and be adopted relatively easily can’t even get to that point because there’s no room. So we decided to build a sanctuary – a dog sanctuary that would take in some of the very dogs that are so problematic for rescues and shelters.”

Dog Lodge Sanctuary also has an educational component to its mission with the newly developed Dog Lodge Radio: Animal Issues That Matter, an internet radio/podcast show that will have in-studio guests and various segments dealing with various animal welfare issues and topics. In addition, Rick and Elaine are happy to share their experience of building and establishing Dog Lodge with anyone who might be considering a similar venture.

Please visit our website at www.doglodge.org to learn about holiday donations to help support this impactful sanctuary, become a volunteer, watch and listen to Dog Lodge Radio and learn more about this labor of love and how you can get involved. Dog Lodge can also be contacted via Facebook at Doglodgetx (don’t forget to follow us) or by emailing info@doglodge.org

NOTE: Private tours of Dog Lodge Sanctuary can be arranged. All media inquiries are welcome, and we encourage site visits, interviews with our founders, and feature stories to help us create awareness of the impact of such sanctuaries. Becoming ZebraStrong: Ehlers-Danlos Society Launches International Patient Empowerment and EDS Awareness Tour

    [ad_1]

Patient Advocate and International Executive Director Lara Bloom to screen inspiring documentary, “Issues with my Tissues,” to empower patients, families, and raise awareness for EDS and associated disorders

The Ehlers-Danlos Society is proud to announce its first International Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD), awareness tour, “Becoming Zebra Strong,” featuring Lara Bloom, International Executive Director of The Ehlers-Danlos Society. Hosted by local affiliates from Northern California to South East England, event includes public screenings of Bloom’s 2015 documentary,“Issues With My Tissues.”

The acclaimed documentary follows Lara’s seemingly unthinkable journey to raise awareness and funding for EDS research by achieving what her doctors believe to be the impossible—becoming the first known person living with EDS to complete the London Marathon.

Becoming #ZebraStrong in the face of adversity and chronic pain

Affected by numerous multisystemi cchallenges for nearly three decades, Bloom’s diagnosis of hypermobile EDS (hEDS) serves as a catalyst for nothing less than a total metamorphosis.

Driven to reconstruct her life, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, Bloom embarks on a journey of total transformation.

Despite rarely walking more than a few miles at any point in her life, the film documents Bloom’s training, her pain, her endurance—including her heroic drive to complete the final thirteen miles on a fractured foot—and her ultimate triumph, as Bloom pushes herself to successfully finish the entire 2011 marathon, in just eight hours and 18 minutes.

To get across the finish line, Bloom seeks out the advice of renowned medical professionals and numerous families and individuals whose suffering has been compounded by years of misdiagnosis, uneven treatment, and the heart-wrenching challenges of life with EDS.

Following each screening, Bloom will answer questions and discuss how people can become “ZebraStrong” in the face of EDS, HSD, and the numerous related symptoms and associated conditions, which confront those living with these disorders.

    ABOUT THE EHLERS-DANLOS SOCIETY

The Ehlers-Danlos Society is a global community of patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals and supporters dedicated to saving and improving the lives of those affected by the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, hypermobility spectrum disorders, and related conditions.

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with offices in the U.S. and the U.K., we support collaborative research, education, advocacy, community-building and care for people with EDS and HSD.

The Ehlers-Danlos Society seeks to grow worldwide awareness — and a better quality of life for all who suffer from these conditions. Research is at the center of what we do so that one day we will have a cure.

ABOUT THE EHLERS-DANLOS SYNDROMES AND HYPERMOBILITY SPECTRUM DISORDERS

The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of 14 heritable connective tissue gene disorders that produce a spectrum of complex problems across multiple systems of the body. The physical characteristics that are common to all types of EDS include hypermobile joints, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility. EDS is known to affect more than one in 5,000 men and women of every race and ethnicity.

Each person’s case of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is unique. Severity may range dramatically, even within families. Prognosis depends on the type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and the individual.

    Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS)

Hypermobile EDS (hEDS) typically begins with extreme joint hypermobility, joints which can stretch beyond normal limits; a propensity for sprains, strains, subluxations and dislocations; pain, often in lower limbs, and with fine motor or repetitive tasks; and easy fatigability.

Although each person with hEDS faces their own set of problems out of the wide range of possible effects, hEDS generally evolves. The initial “hypermobility” phase may involve the ability to hyperextend various body parts to extremes normally attributed to contortionists, gymnasts or elite dancers. Over time, the extreme hypermobility and connective tissue instability of hypermobile EDS may lead to permanent injuries. The “pain” phase involves widespread and worsening pain and headache; pelvic pain in women; and worsened fatigue. The “stiffness” phase seen in some adults and in the elderly results in general reduction in joint hypermobility; significant losses in functionality because of disabling pain and fatigue; and increased limitations, due to reduced muscle mass and weakness, prior injuries and arthritis.

While certain features of hypermobile EDS are not yet in the diagnostic criteria — as more research is needed to prove causation and the relationships between the hEDS and potential comorbidities — clinical descriptions of hEDS have expanded beyond joint hypermobility to include: chronic pain and fatigue, gastrointestinal disorders, neurological issues, dysautonomia, and anxiety. As of this time, hypermobile EDS has no identified distinctive cause.

    Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD)

The hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) describe patients with symptomatic joint hypermobility not corresponding to other known conditions. The spectrum of HSD ranges from secondary musculoskeletal manifestations and a simplified categorization of genetic syndromes featuring joint hypermobility.

    Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (vEDS)

Life expectancy can be significantly shortened for those with the Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS) due to the potential for organ and/or blood vessel rupture. While significantly diminished life expectancy is not usually a factor in the other types, quality of life can be severely affected by chronic pain, disability, and myriad comorbidities. There are no cures for the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, but there are treatments which address many symptoms and preventative measures that may help slow their progression.

How a Texas-Based Nonprofit Changes Hundreds of Young Lives in Africa Daily

    [ad_1]

An Idea of Donating Books Turns into a World of Schools, Education, Meals, Safe Homes and Thriving Youth

How does a small Fort Worth, Texas nonprofit reach out to over 1,000 donors, including the most visible Major League Baseball player in America, and start construction on a 700-student school in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia?

It all began when Alissa Rosebrough (who was Alissa Hollimon at the time) graduated from Texas A&M with a communications degree and began working as an assistant photographer for the San Antonio Spurs. This launched her freelance photography career with the National Basketball Association, and she was also working for a large construction company as their in-house photographer. During the basketball offseason, Alissa began taking photos for various aid organizations around the world, particularly in Africa.

Our original intent was to hold one annual fundraiser and buy books. As we invited friends to join us in supporting these children, many of them began committing $30, $50 and even more every month to educate them.

Alissa Rosebrough , Executive Director, Arise Africa

From 2007 to 2014, Alissa photographed in America and traveled around Africa, documenting the progress being made – and not being made – in governmental and aid organizations. After spending an extended amount of time in Zambia in 2008 and 2009, she felt a calling to do more than just chronicle the nation’s plight through her photos. She wanted to make a difference on a much deeper level.

Alissa met fellow American John Rosacker on that trip to Zambia, and they hatched the idea of doing something for Zambian children. John didn’t mince words with his offer: “I’ll pay if you do the work to start a nonprofit.” Alissa immediately accepted.

Alissa and John established Arise Africa as a 501(c)(3) based in Dallas in 2010, but what began as collecting and donating books once a year has grown into a much larger mission. The big change came three years later, when Alissa met her soon-to-be husband, Asher Rosebrough. She moved the organization’s office to Fort Worth in 2015 and retired from her photography career to dedicate her full efforts to the burgeoning organization.

“Our original intent was to hold one annual fundraiser and buy books,” says Alissa. “As we invited friends to join us in supporting these children, many of them began committing $30, $50 and even more every month to educate them.” That initial group of 15 friends has grown to over 700 people with a monthly commitment. One of Arise Africa’s annual fundraisers – the Crawfish Boil – took place on April 22 at 809 at Vickery. The event attracted 250 attendees and raised more than $150,000 over a four-day period thanks to a donor match campaign.

Today, Arise Africa has generated some impressive metrics: 450 students are in a child sponsorship program where they are educated, given medical care, clothed and fed by the organization. The children are being led by 15 local Zambians hired by Arise Africa, and the student-to-discipleship ratio is 30:1. Arise also operates two orphanages, the Arise Homes, where 18 children live in full-time care. The children in the homes were abandoned, living on the streets or in the city dump, and some were on the verge of death due to illnesses. The organization has a paid staff of 45, including the teachers, administrators, cooks and support staff. Of this number, three are in Fort Worth and 42 are Zambian nationals. “Our teaching can only be as good as the proficiency of the educators,” Alissa adds. “We recently hired a Zambian headmaster and he is outstanding. He is helping educate our teachers, which elevates the quality of what they can teach the children.”

Arise Africa’s programs include serving a hot meal each day, teaching students to read, write and perform math, daily Bible study and, of course, play time – every child needs to have a release for pent-up energy.

Alissa was approached by her friends Clayton and Ellen Kershaw, who wanted to help through their foundation, Kershaw’s Challenge. Alissa attended college with Ellen’s older sister, which led to the connection. Clayton, the two-time Cy Young Award winner for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Ellen have traveled to Africa multiple times with Arise and volunteered. This all began when Ellen reached out after learning about the mission trips to Zambia and asked if she and Clayton could join the volunteers.

They also announced that Kershaw’s Challenge is providing $1 million to build a school where 700 Zambian students will learn to read, write and develop critical thinking skills. The school will also provide evening classes to help educate the community’s adults in hopes of elevating the quality of life for the entire immediate area.

The major project is the new school, which will eventually accommodate 700 students. Due to Zambia’s fragile economy, the federal government has imposed new fees for zoning and construction permits. The approval process is slow, but it has been expedited somewhat because Arise Africa utilizes Zambian contractors and buys materials locally whenever possible.

The organization has already received the first $250,000 installment and will begin construction of phase one this August, which should accommodate over 150 students starting in January 2019.

Arise Africa has already built two homes and a central headquarters called The Complex. The two homes, called the Arise Homes, house 18 children from ages 5 to 18 that are in Arise’s full-time care. The students retain their own given names, which range such African names as Mukonda, Armon and Shadrack, to more Americanized names like Fred and Mary. Many of the Africanized names refer to the season of life when the children were born, such as joy, pain, blessings and trouble.

According to Alissa, The Complex, which can sleep 30, is self-sustaining. When not housing Arise mission trippers, children or staff, organizations such as USAid rent the bedrooms at $40/night for doctors to stay during their missionary trips. Some larger nonprofits rent out the entire complex for a week at a time to accommodate their mission groups as well. The Complex is constructed from repurposed metal shipping containers that have been converted with windows and doors.

The next step? “Advancing some of our best and brightest kids to great universities in America and elsewhere in the world,” continues Alissa. “We already have one student whose SAT score qualifies for TCU. As we can find scholarship money for these children, we’ll be able to make enormous changes in the trajectory of their lives. The goal is not for them to live in America – the goal is to build and grow leaders for Zambia.”

In the meantime, Arise Africa is preparing to ship more than 500 Christmas swag bags to Zambia. Even though North Texas is experiencing 100-degree weather, shipping these Christmas gifts to Zambia is least expensive now. The bags will travel across the ocean on a container ship.

Cote Foundation Begins Live ‘Rest in Christ’ Bible Study Series

    [ad_1]

Along with bringing clean white socks and food to the homeless, Cote Foundation will now nurture via online ministry.

    Press Release

    updated: May 17, 2018

The Cote Foundation, a nonprofit organization, is adding a weekly live bible study to their ministry.

The live “Rest in Christ” Bible Study series starts May 18 in the Cote Foundation private Facebook group and will run indefinitely on Fridays at 10 a.m. EST.

We know good deeds alone will not change the spiritual bankruptcy of the lost, but by our service we will reveal a living faith, motivated by Christ’s love, empowered by the Spirit, and submitted to our Father’s plan.

    Tim Cote, CEO

Started by four brothers in 2016, the Cote Foundation desired to spread Jesus Christ’s love and message by meeting the immediate needs of those looking for help and support.

They accomplished this is by providing food, aid, and new clean socks to the homeless.

When someone comes seeking help they are not met with questions of religious affiliation or spoken to with voices filled with pity. Instead, they are greeted with love, respect, and the offer to rest in a judgment-free environment.

“We know good deeds alone will not change the spiritual bankruptcy of the lost, but by our service we will reveal a living faith, motivated by Christ’s love, empowered by the Spirit, and submitted to our Father’s plan.”

    | Cote Foundation |

The Struggles, The Hardships, The Calling

What the Cote Foundation desires to do is meet people where they are; to meet their most immediate need so that they may earn the right to be heard on a national platform.

Tim and his three brothers, co-founders of the Cote Foundation, grew up a little rough around the edges. Like lost sheep, the brothers eventually found their path back to salvation. They knew that if their lives were going to continue to be blessed they needed to share God’s love.

With a deep calling to meet the immediate needs of the suffering, the brothers served the homeless with food, clothing, and most importantly hope. Like a new pair of soft, simple white socks the Cote Foundation demonstrates a whole-hearted approach, and the founders continue to gain fellowship and trust on a daily basis.

“As Jesus served compassionately, without compromise, we are serving our neighbors, meeting their needs as the Lord leads through sharing our faith, time, and resources as we are led.”

Digital Signage Engages Families at Massachusetts Boys & Girls Club

    [ad_1]

The goal of the digital signage network is to engage parents and club members to increase participation in club events and activities

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 30, 2018

Mvix has been selected by The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holyoke, one of the oldest affiliates of the greater Boys & Girls Clubs of America, to power their digital signage network. The goal of the display network is to engage parents and club members to increase participation in club events and activities.

The Holyoke Club serves more than 350 youths daily and operates 3 satellite branches, including a teen mentorship program. The Club runs childcare services and several academic and recreational after-school programs for kindergarten through high school students.

The ease of use and features of the Mvix digital signage software were very compelling. It made it easy to update and add content on our own.

Victor Rojas, IT Director, The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holyoke

    The Challenge

The staff at Holyoke Boys & Girls Club pinned announcements on cork boards but saw very little engagement from parents and kids.

The Club also lacked a way to physically showcase multimedia content that the kids were creating. The content included video projects, photography, and digital art.

The goal of the digital signage project was to further expand the technological capacities of the club, while simultaneously creating a better engagement channel with parents and the children they served.

    The Solution

The club identified areas with a lot of foot traffic and high dwell times and installed networked digital signs powered by the Mvix digital signage software.

    The software offered:

    • multimedia integrations – the club displayed branded videos and student projects
    • event integrations – automated event listings were easily displayed in real-time
    • remote management – the IT Director can instantly update content from the main office

    The Results

The Holyoke Boys & Girls Club staff has reported:

    • parents have quick access to club schedules and get a view of what their children are accomplishing
    • parents also show increased engagement in volunteer activities and chaperoned events
    • club members show greater interest in activities and projects that are showcased on the displays

“The ease of use and features of the Mvix digital signage software were very compelling,” said Victor Rojas, the IT Director at The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holyoke. “It made it easy to update and add content on our own.”

The club also shared curated content via the Mvix platform. With the 2018 Winter Olympics feed, the club displayed medal counts as well as news and fun tidbits from the games.

“We’re thrilled that the Boys & Girls Club has been able to take full advantage of our digital signage content integrations,” said A. Jay, Senior Director of Business Relations at Mvix. “Their organization is already very tech savvy, and adding digital signage to their repertoire gives them another powerful tool to engage their club members and parents.”

Arise Africa Receives $1 Million Donation From Kershaw’s Challenge

    [ad_1]

Ongoing Partnership Will Fund Construction of New School in Lusaka, Zambia.

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 30, 2018

Arise Africa has announced that they are partnering with Kershaw’s Challenge to build a million dollar school throughout the next few years in Lusaka, Zambia, Africa. The new school will be named the Arise Christian School (ACS.) ACS is part of Arise Africa, a ministry based in Fort Worth, Texas dedicated to serving children in Zambia through Education, Feeding, Shelter, Health and Religious services.

Kershaw’s Challenge is a faith-based, others-focused organization, founded by three-time Cy Young Award Winner and Los Angeles Dodgers Pitcher Clayton Kershaw, and his wife Ellen. Kershaw’s Challenge exists to encourage people to use whatever God-given passion or talent they have to make a difference and give back to people in need. They empower people to use their spheres of influence to impact communities positively and to expand God’s Kingdom. Kershaw’s Challenge believes that God can transform at-risk children and neighborhoods through the benevolence and impact of others.

Kershaw’s Challenge began with our work in Africa and specifically through our friendship with Arise Africa. We are proud of all that has been accomplished so far and look forward to this next stage of work with Arise Africa. This new school beautifully represents our mission and dedication to making life better for children living in Lusaka.

Clayton and Ellen Kershaw, Kershaw Challenge Founders

“Kershaw’s Challenge began with our work in Africa and specifically through our friendship with Arise Africa,” Clayton and Ellen Kershaw said in a statement. “We are proud of all that has been accomplished so far and look forward to this next stage of work with Arise Africa. This new school beautifully represents our mission and dedication to making life better for children living in Lusaka.”

Arise Africa’s partnership with Kershaw’s Challenge began in 2011. During a trip to Zambia, Clayton and Ellen Kershaw met a little girl named Hope who had a very evident need in her life. She was a vulnerable orphan, accustomed to surviving on the street. Ellen and Clayton sponsored Hope in order to provide for her basic needs, but it was clear that she needed more. She needed a safe place to call home. Every year, Kershaw’s Challenge partners with various non-profits around the world to work alongside them on specific projects to improve the lives of thousands of at-risk children. Since 2011, Kershaw’s Challenge has partnered with Arise Africa to purchase land and build two homes, which house sixteen children in our full-time custody. These homes have radically changed the lives of these children, enabling them to have a place to call home and a forever family.

“The Arise Africa family in Texas and Africa are so grateful for the commitment and generosity of Clayton and Ellen Kershaw and the partnership with Kershaw’s Challenge,” said Alissa Rosebrough, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Arise Africa. “The new school will have a massive impact on the children and entire community we serve in Zambia.”

In 2016, Kershaw’s Challenge worked together with Arise Africa and purchased land in Ngombe Compound for ACS. The school is located in the heart of a community that Arise is serving. Currently, 150 students in Arise Africa’s Child Sponsorship Program learn in a house that came with the property. Once the new school is finished, this number will turn to over 600.

Construction on the new facilities at ACS will be starting soon. The first phase of building will be focused on the foundations: properly building the land with plumbing and electricity, as well as setting the large water storage stands. Additionally, the first phase will include the building of six classrooms and one toilet block.

Arise Africa is a 501c3 nonprofit Ministry headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. Founded in 2010, Arise Africa currently has 500 children in a child sponsorship program. They also have two homes where children live in Arise’s full-time custody. updated: Aug 25, 2017

The not-for-profit lending organization, Provident Loan Society of New York, is giving away back-to-school supplies at every NYC loan office throughout the month of September.

Back-to-school time can add some serious expenses to the monthly family budget. A survey from Deloitte found that households throughout New York spend an average of $513 on back-to-school supplies like pens and notebooks.

“We know many families in our community face financial challenges when it comes to getting school supplies for their children. We see it in our loan offices – parents asking if they can have extra pens or calculators to give to their kids for school. We’re all in this together. This is one of the ways we can help our community.”

Bellefit Maternity Partners With Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center to Aid in Women’s Rehabilitation Efforts

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Mar 23, 2017

Bellefit Maternity is no stranger to the challenges many women face. Its line of postpartum girdles is just one way the company has been making a positive impact in the lives of new moms. Launched in 2008, Bellefit girdles have helped thousands of women around the world not only find comfort after having a baby but discover happiness and enjoy more confidence in their bodies.

The family-owned company has expanded its outreach even further through a new partnership with the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center in Pembroke Pines, Fla. The SBA Center has been providing rehabilitation from substance abuse to expectant mothers and women with children since 1995. One of only a few full-service recovery centers in the United States, the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center provides residential and outpatient treatment in a loving, structured environment, where a woman can receive the support she needs while living with and caring for her children.

Our hope for women at the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center is that they continue to find the courage, strength & support to improve the quality of their lives, so they can give the best of themselves to their children.

    Cynthia Suarez, Bellefit Founder

On March 3, Bellefit Maternity began an ongoing initiative to donate Postpartum Recovery Girdles to Women at the SBA Recovery Center who are expecting a baby or have recently given birth. The company’s general manager, Andy Suarez, and public relations manager, Carolina Suarez-Garcia, met with the residents and shared Bellefit’s story and provided education about the postpartum benefits of using a Bellefit girdle.

Additionally, Bellefit donated $1000 to the SBA Recovery Center’s ‘Room to Grow’ Program. This program is raising funds to build a new room & board wing at the SBA Recovery Center which will increase the number of women who can be admitted to the Center.

Bellefit founder Cynthia Suarez recalled how much her own daughter struggled after having children, so she developed the product to alleviate the discomfort of an incision from a C-section and also provide a much-needed boost of confidence to recovering moms.

“Being a mom of four and a grandmother of seven, I know, first-hand, how challenging motherhood can be,” Suarez said.

It was through the Center’s partnership with The Rotary Club of Weston that Suarez’s son, Andy, a Rotarian, met Whitney Hughson, associate director of marketing at the SBARC. When Hughson shared the stories of moms who struggle with addiction while trying to raise their children and how the Center helps women lead healthier, more productive lives, Suarez knew Bellefit needed to get involved.

“Bellefit Girdles are known to make moms’ lives easier after childbirth and give them a boost of confidence during a time when women are focused on their baby and usually feel guilty about caring for themselves,” Suarez said.

Helping to reduce uterus swelling by safely supporting and compressing the abdominal and lumbar regions, the girdles provide a faster and more comfortable postpartum recovery for those who have undergone a C-section or natural childbirth, or for those experiencing diastasis recti or pain.

Suarez called the partnership a perfect match.

“Our hope for women at the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center is that they continue to find the courage, strength and support to improve the quality of their lives, so they can give the best of themselves to their children,” she said. With housing for approximately 60 women at any given time during rehabilitation and an outpatient program that extends far beyond that, the Center is certain to see positive benefits from the generous Bellefit partnership.

Information to Donate time, money or items the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center can be found at www.susanbanthonycenter.org or by calling (866) 641-8986.

The 30th Annual Golf tournament will be held at the Weston Hills Country Club on April 3, 2017 and the 20th Annual Run for Tomorrow will be held at Cypress Bay High School on December 10th, 2017.  All proceeds from these events will continue to help continue Rotary’s mission and raise funds for community and international projects.

“The moment we saw the billboards and story behind The Joy Team we knew we wanted to be part of it,” said Patti Hughes, Founder/CEO/Creative Officer of Natural Life.  “We love to make the world a better place and inspire people to live happy. We, too, believe that words can change the world. One kind word can change someone’s entire day!”

“Think happy. Be happy.”   “Something wonderful is about to happen.”  “Stop. Smile. Breathe. Life is beautiful.”  “You make a difference.”  “Do more of what makes you happy.”  These are just some of the messages that will inspire and uplift people across the nation. A complete list of the smile cities and pdfs of the positive messages can be found at SmileAcrossAmerica.com

    Why positive messages?

Positive messages influence our thoughts. Our thoughts affect our beliefs, the words we speak and the actions we take; which shape the circumstances and events of our lives.  Happier, more optimistic thoughts lead to happier, more optimistic people.  Why does happiness matter?  Not only does research show the health benefits are huge; but it also shows happiness leads to success in nearly every domain of our lives; including marriage, friendship, community involvement, creativity and, in particular, our jobs, careers and businesses.

    Why billboards?

Billboard advertising works. You can’t turn it off, fast forward it or mute it. If you drive by it, you see it. Most people can’t help reading something they see, it’s automatic.  Want to share a happy thought?  A billboard is an excellent way to do it.

    About The Joy Team

Daley Plaza Announced as Official Location for Spark Chicago’s Discovery Day

Hundreds of CPS Middle School Youth and Spark Mentors to Showcase Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship at Inaugural Citywide Celebration

Spark today announced its inaugural citywide Discovery Day event will take place on Daley Plaza on June 10, 2016 to celebrate hundreds of Chicago middle school youth who are participating in workplace-based apprenticeships with Spark mentors at companies like Google, KPMG, Tyson Foods, West Monroe Partners, and more.  The event will showcase the talents of over 300 students through hands-on projects like making films, creating websites and video games, pitching new businesses, building mobile applications, robots, and more.

Discovery Day is sponsored by leading Chicago companies and is hosted by the Spark Chicago Board of Directors.  The event committee includes Charles Calloway of Chapman and Cutler LLP, Jim Evans of Entertainment Cruises, Kyla Kelly of Google, Ashley Lavin of Northern Trust, Robin Lavin of the Osa Foundation, David Leiter of KPMG, Neil Mann of Chapman and Cutler LLP, Kristina Oderinde of KPMG, Gordana Radmilovic of West Monroe Partners, and Marta Stein of McGuireWoods LLP.

“I am working with my Spark mentor Jordan on a project to make Chicago a better city for all of us,” said Armon, Spark student from North Lawndale. “I want to thank the City of Chicago for allowing Discovery Day to take place on Daley Plaza. I hope a lot of people will visit my booth to hear my ideas for our city.”

Since the launching of the Chicago program in 2011, Spark has served over 1,000 Chicago Public School (CPS) students. Through dynamic apprenticeships, Chicago’s youth are exploring career fields including entrepreneurship, STEM, law, architecture, and more. These workplace experiences empower students to dream big and envision themselves working in some of the nation’s top industries and companies.

Discovery Day is the culminating event of a yearlong program in which 7th and 8th graders work with volunteer mentors at the workplace.  The event will feature Spark students engaging the entire City of Chicago through interactive displays and presentations showcasing their skills in technology, business, design, and beyond.

In 2004, Spark was founded by two educators who saw early intervention as a tool to help under-resourced youth build the confidence, skills and career awareness to thrive in school and in the workforce.  Spark successfully gets students on track in key areas of attendance, behavior, and grades. What’s more, Spark students transition to high school at rates higher than their counterparts. Evidence shows that by combining project-based learning with engaging mentors in the workplace and a 21st century skill-building curriculum, Spark students enter high school engaged, on-track, and ready for success.

“Investing in Spark is a commitment to the future,” said Kathleen St. Louis Caliento, Ph.D., Executive Director of Spark Chicago. “Spark students represent the promise of tomorrow, and with the support of our partners and the Chicago community we are hopeful that we can reach even more students in the years to come.”

Spark’s leading investors in Chicago include CEB, Deloitte, Finnegan Family Foundation, Google, KPMG, Osa Foundation, Paul M. Angell Family Foundation, Polk Bros. Foundation, Pritzker Foundation, Steans Family Foundation, Tyson Foods, United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, West Monroe Partners, and Zell Family Foundation.  Starcom MediaVest Group is Spark’s media sponsor.  Spark is a proud partner of Chicago Public Schools, the City of Chicago, and Department of Family and Support Services.

Spark is grateful for support of the program and the Discovery Day event.  Individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations interested in supporting and contributing to Spark and Discovery Day can visit DiscoverSparkChicago.org.  Follow Spark on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @SparkProgramCHI and use #DiscoverSpark to follow the Discovery Day excitement.
