  • Ina Garten’s 14 Best Hosting Tips of All Time

Ina Garten’s 14 Best Hosting Tips of All Time

    [ad_1]

    10. Master mess-free muffins.

Before you host, your life may feel like a never-ending to-do list. The last thing you want is to repeat a step you previously completed. Avoid any redos in the kitchen by planning ahead with these mess-free muffins. The secret to success is simple: Grease every inch of your muffin pan — including the top. This hack avoids broken or damaged muffins and makes transferring them from pan to plate easy.

    11. Decorate desserts effortlessly.

Ina shared her hacks for mess-free muffins, but what about mess-free cakes? Consider it handled — or at least, with this trick, you’ll have it covered. Before decorating cakes on your cake stand, Ina recommends placing parchment or wax paper on the stand and cutting it into small triangles. As you work around the cake, you’ll see the tiny triangles sticking out; seamlessly pull them out when finished. You’ll have a mess-free cake stand that rivals one from the pros. (This video shows how to do this step-by-step around the 18-minute mark.)

    12. Indulge in boozy beverages (and treats!).

Love alcohol and dessert? Ina is no exception. That’s why, this holiday season, mix the two to create one delicious dessert. Ina’s three-ingredient boozy limoncello desserts earn an automatic green check in our book; they’re easy to make and delicious. Part lemon-flavored alcohol, part ice cream, topped off with garnish and voilà! It’s the elevated ice cream float that’s too decadent to miss.

    13. Perfectly plate portions.

Ina provides another simple hack that will have you whipping up restaurant-style cakes (or muffins) in seconds. Before plating your slice of cake, spread just a couple of spoonfuls of fruit jam in a circle on a small plate (using the back of the spoon), then lay the slice of cake on its side and garnish with a few fresh berries. It’s the tiny details that will make a world of difference.

    14. Serve in style.

Sure, Ina will assemble her table to her liking, but when grabbing food, she leaves that up to her guests. She lets them grab as much or as little as they need, and the way she does so is by planning ahead with the proper serving platters, particularly this one. This Le Creuset oval platter is dense enough to block moisture absorption to prevent cracking, crazing, and ripping, and the nearly nonstick glazed interior easily releases food for a quick cleanup. Plus, it looks so stylish when laid on a table, ready to dive deep into!

  • Great Whiskeys For A Friendsgiving

    Great Whiskeys For A Friendsgiving

    [ad_1]

It’s the time of year where people gather together and enjoy each other’s company, good food and hopefully something delicious to wash it all down. While wine is the general go to for dinner parties, beer, vodka, and bubbles are also in the mix. But what about great whiskeys for a Friendsgiving. Some pair well with the flavors of meats and vegetables and adds an earthiness to the palate.

    RELATED: Rainy Weather Cocktails

Here are time-tested, proven suggestions for crowd-pleasing whiskeys to plunk down on the table after the plates are cleared and before the babysitters need to be relieved.

    Oban 14-Year-Old

Oban 14-Year-Old is quickly climbing the ranks of my favorite all-purpose single malts. It’s the best of both worlds. It has high-toned peat and opulent, vanilla-soaked oak. It’s rich yet nuanced, sweet yet smoky, and interesting without being in the least bit challenging. It also pairs beautifully with chocolate.

    George Dickel Barrel Select

This small batch release from George Dickel is aged between 10 and 12 years, right in the sweet spot for American whiskey. Balanced, mellow, and with signature George Dickel minerality, this is a lovely bottle to share with friends who might not know just how delicious Dickel can be.

    Hibiki Whiskey

Noted Chef Justin Khanna encourages to people to mix it up with this Japanese whiskey. The House of Suntory a this delicate balance of several malt and grain whiskies is meticulously crafted goodness which pairs without overwhelmed savory flavors.

    Basil Hayden’s

Everybody loves bourbon, but not everybody loves the 120+ proof cask strength stuff that’s so popular these days. Basil Hayden’s is a gentler whiskey from Jim Beam and still manages to hang on to all those fruity, spicy characteristics which make American whiskey so enjoyable. Plus, it comes wearing a fun little paper vest.

    Redbreast 12-Year-Old

Most cringe from the word “smooth” used to describe whiskey—what does such a thing mean? Has anybody ever tasted a gritty whiskey?—but once in a while, the adjective does come to mind. Redbreast 12-Year-Old is silky, sweet, supple, and downright seductive, a seamless homage to the mellow flavors of malted barley and integrated oak. Don’t call it “smooth,” but your guests almost certainly will.

Have a great holiday season and venture out with some great whiskeys for Friendsgiving.

  • Tips For Holiday Travel With Weed

Tips For Holiday Travel With Weed

    [ad_1]

It has been reported 55.4 Million Americans are expected to travel this Thanksgiving holiday. This forecast is a 2.3% increase over last year, the third highest since 2000, so be ready for crowds.  Whether near or far, you might want to bring some “treats” to use while away from home, TSA frowns on it, but here are some tips for holiday travel with weed.

If you plan to use while traveling, which we caution, here are a few suggestions. One, forgot flower and vapes, too smelly, too noticeable and too annoying to those who can make traveling difficult.  Gummies are the easiest and least noticeable, especially since airports sell tons of regular candy.  Don’t overindulge, you don’t want to be the subject of some’s viral video or be stopped by TSA, security of the Highway Patrol.

Now about bringing treats with you on your trip.

    By Air

Photo by Ali Abdul Rahman via Unsplash

Wouldn’t it be great to not have to worry about weed when traveling? Sadly, we’re not there yet, far from it, in fact. While some airports are fine with it, others are not. For example, Denver’s airport, which is located in the very legal state of Colorado, forbids cannabis.

RELATED: TSA (Sort of) Allows (Some) Hemp-CBD Products on Flights

As for the Travel Security Administration (TSA), their stance is pretty clear. Since marijuana is federally illegal, passengers will be stopped if they have cannabis on them. Still, it helps to know your rights; don’t interact with police officers unless you have to and, if detained or arrested, let them know you don’t consent to a search and you want a lawyer.

RELATED: What TSA Would Do If You Got Caught With Marijuana

Still, if you’re traveling with a vape pen or some edibles, it’s very unlikely you’ll be stopped. When it comes to flower, especially if it’s large amounts, we’d advise to store your well earned weed in a mason jar and to hide it away from sunlight in some cabinet in your apartment, waiting for you upon your return. If you’re going home for the holidays, use some of your old contacts for weed, or mooch off of some cousin.

    By Land

5 Things You Should Be Aware Of Before Going On A Roadtrip
Photo by Alex Jumper via Unsplash

The rules of traveling by land are similar to those on air; while the states where you’re traveling to and from may be legal, the drug remains illegal on a federal level, making matters complicated.

RELATED: In Possession Of Weed? Here’s What Not To Do If You’re Pulled Over

While there are penalties for traveling with weed, especially if you have large amounts of it, officers are not actively on the lookout for them. This means that if you are driving consciously you likely won’t have trouble mobilizing your weed. Make sure you store your weed in an airtight container or that you prioritize edibles and vapes, since these are more discreet and less likely to be spotted. And make sure you don’t embibe and drive.

    What About Medical Marijuana?

    medical marijuana

If you have a medical marijuana card, you might face less hurdles. Still, it’s not a clear path. Be sure to have your doctor’s certificate, your marijuana medical ID card, and your physician’s number. Ideally, you’d be traveling to a state with medical marijuana reciprocity. Make sure you have the smallest amount possible on you, keeping your weed stored in a convenient place.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been sharing gift guides for everyone on your list. (See our posts on gifts for college students, gifts for girls, parent gifts, white elephant gifts, and stocking stuffers for college students.)

Today, we have a special gift guide for the athlete or fitness fan in your life. These people can be notoriously difficult to shop for if you don’t know the trends in the fitness world.

To help, we’ve compiled a list of the 25 most popular gifts for athletes this year, so you can get them what they really want. Read on for the gift guide!

    25 Gift Ideas For Athletes

    Apple AirPods

You knew this one was coming. If they don’t have a pair of AirPods yet, this is definitely the #1 gift every athlete wants this year. Yes, it’s a splurge, but they will use these daily.

Gone are the days of snagging your headphones on your arm during your workout, sending your phone crashing to the ground. AirPods allow you to listen to your music wirelessly, and the new Pro model comes with special tips for a custom fit for your ears. Plus, the noise cancellation and battery life on these are unmatched!

    Lululemon Align Leggings

Lululemon’s Align leggings have a cult following for a reason — they truly are as “buttery soft” as the brand claims. They’re ultra-flattering, come in the cutest colors, and are THE workout legging every woman wants to own. (AKA they’re basically the best gift ever!)

While I live for my Lulu leggings, for a more budget-friendly alternative, I’m also obsessed with these CRZ Yoga leggings from Amazon. They aren’t quite as soft as the Aligns but they’re extremely similar, plus they’re ultra-comfy and totally squat-proof! Just another great gift option.

    APL Sneakers

These APL sneakers are among the most fashionable running shoes on the market right now. Name a celebrity or fitness influencer, and it’s very likely they’ve been photographed in these shoes.

Yes, APLs are expensive. But if you want a gift that will really wow them, these are a sure winner that they will wear all the time.

    VKTRY Carbon Fiber Performance Insoles

VKTRY gold performance insoles for athletesVKTRY gold performance insoles for athletes

    AD

If you are gifting your athlete a new pair of shoes, you can make that gift 100x better by including some custom insoles for the sport of their choice.

VKTRY insoles are insanely popular because they’re designed to improve athletic performance. This means “faster sprint times, more explosive movement, and fewer injuries.” If your athlete is serious about performance, they’ll be thrilled with this gift!

    An Apple Watch

Another one that your giftee may already have, but a total no-brainer if they don’t. Everyone I know who’s into fitness has an Apple Watch to track their workouts. It’s definitely the must-have fitness tracker of the past few years.

If you want to bring this gift over the top, consider pairing the watch with a replacement band in their favorite color. (This stainless steel bracelet one is my personal fave, and super affordable!)

    New Gym Bag

A gym bag is one of the most classic gift ideas for athletes, and for good reason. Every athlete needs a good bag to carry their gym essentials, and gym bags get gross over time and need to be replaced.

You don’t have to spend a lot to get a great gym bag, either. This awesome bag from Baleine is very affordable and has thousands of five-star reviews, plus special compartments to keep sweaty clothes away from the rest of your stuff.

    Hoka Sneakers

If your giftee is serious about running or walking, Hokas are another one of the hottest workout shoes on the market right now. Trust me: If your giftee works out, they’ve heard of them.

Once again, these are pricey, but for good reason. They are extremely cushiony, perfect for people who run or walk long distances on a regular basis. Get these for your cardio-loving giftee and they’ll love you forever.

    Melissa Wood Health Subscription

    Screenshots from the App Store

This is my personal workout of choice and a fantastic gift for women at any fitness level. I’ve been doing Melissa’s workouts for over a year now, and I’m still not sick of them!

These yoga and pilates-focused workouts are perfect for college students since all you need for most of them is a yoga mat and a pair of ankle weights. They range in length from five minutes to over an hour, so they’re easy to fit into any schedule. In addition, there isn’t a lot of jumping around, so it’s a great workout option for anyone with downstairs neighbors.

Subscriptions are available on Melissa’s website, and you can gift them in intervals from 1 to 12 months.

    Cute Amazon Workout Set

This year, matching sets are definitely the biggest trend in women’s gym wear. So if you know a woman who is into fitness, a matching set makes a fantastic gift idea.

This affordable top and leggings set from Amazon is highly rated for its thick, flattering, and squat-proof fabric. It also comes in 14 different colors, so you’re sure to find her favorite. It looks so much more expensive than it is, and she’ll wear it all the time!

    Body Love” by Kelly LeVeque

Most athletes I know love smoothies and Kelly LeVeque’s Fab Four Smoothies are famous in the fitness influencer world.

Kelly’s book “Body Love” shares all of her recipes for these famous energy-boosting smoothies, plus tons of other tips for healthy living. It’s a fantastic resource for anyone looking to live a healthier lifestyle.

The TikTok-Famous Amazon Sports Bra Top

Here’s another Amazon find made famous by TikTok and Instagram influencers. These crop tops with built-in padding eliminate the need for a bra and are ideal for workouts or just wearing casually.

The fabric is thick and surprisingly supportive, plus it comes in 24 different colors. And the best part is, it’s under $20. 43,000+ reviewers aren’t wrong — this top is a winner!

    Theragun Massager

Here’s a gift that will be appreciated by ANY athlete on your list, guaranteed. The Theragun is a high-tech portable massager that targets muscle aches and pains. It can aid in post-workout recovery and is amazing for anyone who suffers from tight or tense muscles.

A Theragun makes a fantastic gift as it’s something most people wouldn’t buy for themselves. All of their friends will be jealous of this one!

    Bala Bangles Ankle Weights

Ankle weights are a must-have for at-home workouts or just making gym workouts more challenging, and Bala Bangles are the best ankle weights on the market.

I got a pair of these last Christmas, and I use them every time I exercise! They’re so easy to put on and off, and unlike other ones I’ve tried, these don’t randomly leak sand everywhere. Plus, they are SO cute and come in a bunch of different colors.

    “Seeing Serena” Book

Serena Williams is the greatest athlete of all time (fight me), so any athlete will appreciate a copy of this revealing biography.

The book takes readers behind the scenes of Serena’s return to tennis after the birth of her daughter and features interviews with many heavy hitters in the sports industry. It’s a fantastic, inspiring look at a true trailblazer and role model.

    Exercise Dice

I had never heard of exercise dice until recently, but now I’m obsessed!

These $10 dice are perfect for anyone who likes to mix up their workouts. One die features exercises (crunches, push-ups, jumping jacks, etc.), and the other has times and reps (10 reps, 20 reps, 30 seconds, 90 seconds, etc.). You just roll the dice together and follow what they tell you to do.

This is a great way to keep your workouts fresh and exciting, and it makes a fantastic gift idea!

    Cute Yoga Mat

There are a lot of ugly yoga mats out there, so surprise your athlete with a stylish one, like this gray marble print mat.

While your giftee might already have a yoga mat, you can totally still get them a new one. Yoga mats wear out and get grimy over time, so this is very likely a gift they will use right away!

    Adjustable Dumbbells

If you want to splurge on a gift they’ll really love, a set of adjustable dumbbells is an insanely thoughtful — and useful gift for athletes. I would freak out if someone bought me a set of these!

This is a great gift for male or female athletes as it’s completely customizable. The dumbbells adjust from 5 to 52 pounds, so your giftee can increase the weight as they get stronger, or switch the weight for different exercises. This set replaces an entire rack of dumbbells, so it’s perfect for people who mostly work out at home.

    A Good Foam Roller

A total classic gift for athletes, and something that most people wouldn’t think to buy for themselves.

A foam roller is a super easy (and affordable) way to relieve sore muscles after a workout.

Foam rollers come in lots of sizes and colors, but I like this 13″ black grid one as it’s smaller than most foam rollers but still just as effective (perfect for small spaces). In addition, the grid pattern helps it to better target tough-to-reach muscles.

    Iron Flask Water Bottle

I talked about some of my favorite Amazon finds this year, and water bottles always make the list. While I love the plastic bottle I mentioned in that post, for workouts, I prefer the Iron Flask bottle above.

This double-walled, insulated water bottle fits a whopping 32 oz inside to help you stay hydrated and drink your water throughout the day. It’s also pretty much indestructible and comes with three different lids to fit your preference. (I like the straw lid for my workouts!)

Pack of Alani Nu Energy Drinks

Katy Hearn is a major name in the fitness world, and the energy drinks from her brand Alani Nu are 10/10 amazing. They’re sugar-free and only 10 calories each, plus they have 200 mg of caffeine per can for a major pre-workout boost.

All the flavors taste incredible, but my personal favorites are Hawaiian Shaved Ice and Breezeberry. I love buying these in bulk (in fact I’m drinking one as I write this), so I would be psyched to get a bunch of these as a gift!

    The Towel” from Lululemon

This thing is so cool! It’s an ultra-absorbent microfiber towel that attaches to their yoga mat to soak up sweat during their workout. It has a non-slip surface and easily attaches to most mats.

The Towel comes in a bunch of different sizes and colors, too. (Though I’m obsessed with this white and gray marble print!) A total must for any yoga aficionado in your life.

    Anything from Gymshark

Photo of a dark haired woman wearing a Gymshark black zip-up training jacket with green leggings on the bottomPhoto of a dark haired woman wearing a Gymshark black zip-up training jacket with green leggings on the bottom

Gymshark is probably the biggest gym apparel brand on the market right now. If you’re shopping for an athlete, trust me, they’ve heard of it. I see Gymshark gear everywhere!

Gymshark makes a variety of workout clothes and accessories for men and women, so they’re the perfect place to shop for every fitness fan on your list. You can’t go wrong with anything from the brand, but I’m particularly loving this cute and comfy jacket for working out in the winter.

    Anything from Alo Yoga

Like Gymshark, Alo Yoga is another “it” fitness fashion brand, a favorite of celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner. (You’ve definitely seen it on your favorite influencers, too.) Their designs are super chic and fashion-forward.

If you’re shopping for someone who is into fitness and fashion, you can’t go wrong with anything from Alo. While the brand makes amazing matching workout sets, their foxy sherpa jacket, above, is particularly famous and coveted.

    Shiatsu Back and Shoulder Massager

Ever since I saw this shoulder massager on TikTok, I’ve been dying to get one for myself.

Although it looks weird, this back and shoulder massager is supposed to be a game-changer for relieving tension and pain. (Seriously, look it up on social media for tons of rave reviews!) Most people wouldn’t buy this for themselves, so they will definitely thank you if you gift it to them.

    High Protein Fitness Snack Box

This is a great gift for any athlete who lives far away or anyone who is tough to shop for. After all, who doesn’t love snacks?

This awesome high-protein snack box features 20 individually wrapped, nutritious snacks. It has everything from plant-based protein bites to energy bars and protein cookies! Any athlete would absolutely love this gift.

  • AI Santas, Lucky Pets, Eco-Santas, and the New ‘Mall Rats’: Harris Poll Finds Surprising Demographic Trends in This Year’s Holiday Shopping

AI Santas, Lucky Pets, Eco-Santas, and the New ‘Mall Rats’: Harris Poll Finds Surprising Demographic Trends in This Year’s Holiday Shopping

    [ad_1]

A new report from The Harris Poll Thought Leadership and Futures Practice shows Gen Z and Millennial shoppers defying conventional wisdom, but also finding common ground with Gen X and Boomers in this year’s holiday season.

Gen Z and Millennials seem to do everything online – but when it comes to holiday shopping, they’re much more likely to hit the mall or a second-hand shop than their Boomers and Gen X counterparts. Still, most younger shoppers would happily pay $100 for AI to save them the stress of finding the perfect gift – even though they find AI creepy, according to the new research from The Harris Poll Thought Leadership and Futures Practice.

The study shows several clear distinctions across generations, with younger shoppers (Gen Z and Millennials) seeking authenticity and sustainability in their gift-giving – paradoxically, with a willingness to use artificial intelligence.

“We’re seeing a digital savvy young audience doing three things. First, they are shopping online earlier than everyone else; second, they are planning more times in stores surfing for treasures; and third, they are splurging on themselves,” said Libby Rodney, chief strategy officer at The Harris Poll Thought Leadership and Futures Practice. “They expect brands to do the heavy lifting for them to ensure their choices are guilt-free, sustainable and ideally personalized by AI Santas.”

    Among the report’s findings:

The Holiday Dash has already begun. Over six in 10 (62%) Gen Z and Millennials have already started shopping for the holidays, compared to 48% of Gen X and Boomers. Virtually all (95%) of young shoppers plan to buy gifts, versus 91% of older shoppers.

The new generation of Mall Rats is here. While Amazon remains the top choice for most holiday shopping (50% of younger generations, 56% of older generations), young consumers are far more likely to hit the mall (39% of Gen Z, 36% of Gen Z and Millennials combined, 28% of Gen X and Boomers).

Young shoppers seek that Personal Touch. In addition to questing through shopping malls, they’re also more likely to sift for treasures at second-hand stores (18% to 10%) or even to craft a homemade gift (14% to 11%).

Shoppers across generations are trending toward being Eco-Santas, giving sustainable gifts and looking for brands and options that deliver on that goal. Two-thirds (65%) of all Americans – and three-quarters of Gen Z and Millennials – say they shop sustainably, and half (53%) say they will pay more money to do so. Three-quarters (75%) of Gen Z and Millennials expect brands themselves to ensure people are shopping sustainably. All demographics express strong support for measures like skipping gift wrap, using slower delivery methods, using sustainable materials, and reducing packaging.

While shoppers across generations also seem to have similar gift-buying budgets ($860 to $960 range), the amount and share of the budgets going to family as opposed to themselves swings dramatically with age. Expected spending on gifts for family members climbs steadily from $229 for Gen Z to $636 for Boomers. Correspondingly, spending on themselves declines drastically from an expected $338 for Gen Z to just $38 for Boomers.

That’s driven by Merry Me-Time, with six in 10 (61%) of Gen Z and Millennials planning to treat themselves during the holidays – with half of that group planning to spend more than $100 on a self-gift. Just 39% of Gen X and 21% of Boomers plan to treat themselves with a holiday gift. Two-thirds (66%) of Gen Z and Boomers agree that “the holidays offer the perfect excuse to indulge in luxuries I wouldn’t normally buy for myself.”

(Themselves and their furry friends, that is: 57% of Gen Z and Millennials will buy holiday gifts for their Lucky Pets – and over one in 10 plan to spend over $100 on pet gifts.)

Parents, though, are determined to make the holiday season Extra Magical for their children. Three-quarters (77%) agree that they “want to make this holiday season extra magical for my kids after a challenging year”— though more than half (52%) say their children “have high expectations during holidays because of social media.” Parents expect to spend more than four times as much on family as on themselves ($532 vs. $120).

All that spending has its effects. Younger shoppers are far more likely to be Budget Benders when they shop. Six in 10 (62%) of Gen X and Millennials say they are not financially prepared for the upcoming holiday season. Similar percentages say their holiday shopping budget has ballooned, they rarely stick to that budget anyway, and they buy impulsively – and almost half (44%) have gone into debt from holiday shopping.

Still, Gen Z and Millennials are Gift Hunters and strategic spenders, with three-quarters (74%) utilizing discount days like Prime Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, compared to 60% of older generations. Half (54%) say they’d like to start a GoFundMe wish list for holiday shopping so they can afford to buy the gifts they want to give.

Gen Z and Millennials envision AI Santas as a solution to some issues, despite some misgivings. Six in 10 (62%) say they feel anxiety about gift shopping, and 59% say artificial intelligence could help by saving them time and money – so much so that nearly half (46%) would be willing to pay $100 for AI to select all their holiday gifts, as 55% trust AI more than their gift ideas.

Older generations sharply disagree – 34% think AI could reduce their stress level, and just 20% would pay for an AI shopping assist. And regardless of age, two-thirds (68%) of Americans agree that “it’s creepy that gift-giving could come from AI and not actual people.”

The new research from The Harris Poll Thought Leadership and Futures Practice did find areas where virtually everyone agrees, regardless of generation. Asked what aspects of the holiday season they found joyful or dreadful, about eight out of 10 agreed that holiday traditions, family gatherings, holiday music, and holiday decorations all brought joy.

And nearly nine out of 10 agreed that happiness was more than just shopping: Across generations, (87% Gen X and Boomers, 83% Gen Z and Millennials) agree that “This year, I am going to focus on enjoying the little things that come with the holiday season.”

The report, “2023 Holiday Shopping Trends: How Americans Spend This Holiday Season,” is based on a custom online survey conducted within the United States by The Harris Poll from October 13-15 among a nationally representative sample of 2,079 adults across the four major demographic groups; Gen Z (ages 18-25), Millennials (ages 26-41), Gen X (ages 42-57) and Baby Boomers (ages 58 and older).

  • Marijuana May Help Holiday Anxiety And Depression

Marijuana May Help Holiday Anxiety And Depression

    [ad_1]

The holiday season for most people is a fun time of the year filled with turkey, celebrations, and family  and friend gatherings. Media reenforces is a merry good cheer time for everyone. But some some it is a time filled with sadness, self-reflection, loneliness, and anxiety. Marijuana may help holiday anxiety and depression.  During the holidays, 62% of respondents to a study described their stress level as “very or somewhat” elevated during the holidays, while only 10% reported no stress during the season.

There has been research confirming marijuana, in the right doses, can help with anxiety, sadness and depression.  Gummies are the most popular form of marijuana used. A portion are using them in a low-dose form to manage stress, depression and anxiety.

A Washington State study utilized a data-centric approach using human test subjects to reveal marijuana’s efficacy in treating depression, anxiety, and stress found in everyday life. Published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, the study concluded that “[c]annabis reduces perceived symptoms of negative affect in the short-term, but continued use may exacerbate baseline symptoms of depression over time.”

Utilizing information provided by the marijuana app Strainprint, which helps medical users tracks their cannabis doses and strains, researchers were able to examine how subjects used cannabis within the comforts of their home. As lead author on the study Carrie Cutler told Health Europa, that approach is a departure from previous research around mental illness and cannabis.

RELATED: Is New Marijuana Breathalyzer Technology On The Way?

“Existing research on the effects of cannabis on depression, anxiety and stress are very rare and have almost exclusively been done with orally administered THC pills in a laboratory,” Cutler said. “What is unique about our study is that we looked at actual inhaled cannabis by medical marijuana patients who were using it in the comfort of their own homes as opposed to a laboratory.”

Photo by Joanna Kosinska via Unsplash

According to their analysis, the researchers found that marijuana low in THC and high in CBD was most effective at reducing depression symptoms, while high-THC/high-CBD cannabis “was best for reducing perceived symptoms of stress.” Interestingly, the data also showed that women responded with larger decreases in anxiety after marijuana consumption than men.

RELATED: 5 Things To Do If You Often Wake Up Anxious

More specifically, 89,3% of all session saw significant drop-offs with depression symptoms after smoking marijuana. However, 3.2% of sessions had those symptoms exacerbated while 7.5% of session elicited no change. For session tracking anxiety and stress, more than 90% of sessions had significant reduction in those symptoms. Whether marijuana increased symptoms of anxiety and stress, or played no role at all, followed similar statistical patterns as the depression numbers.

“This is to my knowledge one of the first scientific studies to provide guidance on the strains and quantities of cannabis people should be seeking out for reducing stress, anxiety and depression,” Cutler said. “Currently, medical and recreational cannabis users rely on the advice of bud tenders whose recommendations are based off of anecdotal not scientific evidence.”

Anxiety and related disorders are among the most prevalent mental health conditions in the U.S. While antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications can be effective, they also come with significant side effects. As a result, some individuals are turning to alternative treatments, such as cannabis. But using cannabis comes with its own set of risks. “While it can be used as an alternative treatment for certain types of stress and anxiety, cannabis is not a one-size-fits-all solution and may not be suitable for everyone,” says psychiatrist Dr. Amanda Kingston.

  • HAM SLIDERS – The Southern Lady Cooks – Best Ever

HAM SLIDERS – The Southern Lady Cooks – Best Ever

    [ad_1]

These Ham and Swiss Sliders are some of the best you will ever have. I always have to double the recipe because they go so fast!

Ham and Swiss SlidersHam and Swiss Sliders

If you love these sliders you need to check out our Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe Sliders. They are always a hit too.

    ❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

We love these ham and swiss sliders because they are simple to make and the addition of brown sugar with the mustard gives these the best taste. They are wonderful right out of the oven and I can never eat just one. You can buy deli meat, grab some swiss cheese, a few more ingredients and you have a fantastic appetizer.

    🍴KEY INGREDIENTS

    • Sweet Hawaiian rolls or something similar
    • Deli Ham
    • Swiss Cheese
    • Mayonnaise or Miracle Whip
    • Yellow mustard (Could use honey mustard or spicy mustard)
    • Butter
    • Onion flakes
    • Worcestershire sauce
    • Brown sugar
    • Poppy seeds (optional)

    SWAPS

You could always swap out the meat or the cheese in these sliders. Or make half turkey and cheese and half ham and swiss. I do think the sweetness of the ham is what makes these so good!

    🍽️HOW TO MAKE

These sliders are so easy to throw together, the hardest part is just getting the ingredients out. You can throw these together in five minutes.

    COOKING STEPS

    Step 1
Make your sandwiches by splitting the rolls, spreading with mayo, adding a piece of cheese and ham. Add tops and place in a 9X13 baking dish.

    Step 2
Melt the butter in a small bowl in the microwave, add poppy seeds, mustard, onion flakes and Worcestershire sauce.  Whisk together with wire whisk.  Brush the tops of the rolls using all the mixture.  Sprinkle the brown sugar over the tops after brushing with butter.  Note: I didn’t have any poppy seeds when I remade these for photos, so they are not in the picture and they are optional either way.

    Step 3
Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes.  Remove the foil and bake uncovered for about 5 minutes.  Makes 12 sandwiches.

    ⭐TIP

Hawaiian King Rolls now makes slider buns and so does Pepperidge Farm, which I think makes this much easier than having to split the rolls. I suggest buying those if you can find them.

    RECIPE VARIATIONS

If you love sliders, then give these Chili Dog Sliders a try! They are so easy to make and you could easily make those at the same time you make these.

    SERVE THIS WITH

If you are making sliders then you will more than likely need other appetizers. We love these Mexican Sausage Balls, Homemade Fried Dill Pickles and Crock Pot Cranberry Smokies.

Ham and Swiss SlidersHam and Swiss Sliders

    ❓FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Why were my buns soggy?

Once you add the butter mixture, you need to bake them immediately so they won’t be soggy.

Do you have to use the poppy seeds?

No, you can easily leave them out.

    STORING AND REHEATING

We just store these in tupperware in the fridge and reheat in the microwave, unless we are heating the ALL back up we do it in the oven. 350 for a 5-8 minutes should work.

    Fried Potato Cakes

These potato cakes are a wonderful appetizer. Great way to enjoy leftover mashed potatoes.

If you love pickles you will love this cheese ball. It’s so easy to make and a great appetizer.

About 20 Million Americans Work Part-Time During the Holidays. Here’s How You Can Set Them Up For Success. | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

With the holiday season right around the corner, businesses across the economy are already making plans to bring in temporary workers. In many cases, these workers will be completely new to the businesses that hire them. Yet they won’t just be working a few shifts — they’ll also be auditioning for more opportunities, including permanent positions.

That’s because the holidays are a great time to “try before you buy” in the labor market. Businesses that staff up to fill seasonal needs have a unique opportunity to see how candidates perform, not just in an interview but actually in the workplace.

Close to 20 million people will work part-time during the holidays. So how can managers set their new co-workers up for success?

Related: 4 Ways to Avoid Holiday Staffing Blunders

    Step 1: Onboarding

Onboarding is the most critical step toward success with temporary workers, both for getting to know their preferences and for aligning expectations. People who work on a temporary or flexible basis have diverse motivations. Most of them are working to pay for essentials, so earning money is certainly at the top of the list. After that, things get a little more complicated.

Some workers are looking for shifts primarily to fit around their other responsibilities. Whether it’s because of caring for loved ones, education or another job, these workers generally want to work at the same time every week with a reasonable expectation that their shifts won’t be canceled. They still need some flexibility, though, in case something unforeseen comes up, like a child home from school, a big exam or overtime in another workplace.

Other workers are more interested in personal autonomy and growth. They want to set their own schedules, which could be different every week, and they want to pick up new skills to give themselves more options in the labor market. They may want to try out a variety of roles, and they can bring new ideas into the workplace.

The time to find out workers’ preferences is during onboarding. Ask what sort of schedule would work best. Find out whether they want to hone their skills in one position or try out several. See if they can be “on call” to work on demand. Talk about whether a permanent position could be a realistic goal for both sides.

    Step 2: Training

Businesses don’t want to invest a lot of time or money in training if a worker is simply going to move on a couple of weeks later. So it’s crucial to use what you’ve learned during onboarding to assign training in the most efficient way.

If a worker wants to try for a permanent position, then there’s a greater chance they’ll be staying with you and more reason to train them. The same is true if they want to stay with one role during their time in your workplace. By contrast, workers who are just looking for a little extra money may not want to pursue these opportunities. Calibrate your investment according to the expectations that you’ve already set.

    Step 3: Scheduling

When it comes time to set a schedule, the information you collected at onboarding comes front and center again. Even if you’re only looking for extra labor during the holiday season, you probably want consistency in the workers who show up from day to day. It means only having to train people once, as well as higher productivity as they gain experience.

To start, identify the workers who can work on the most consistent basis, and assign them shifts first. Try to place the same workers together as much as possible, so they get used to each other’s rhythms. Assigning the bulk of shifts in this way will also cut down on bureaucracy since the same workers will be involved most of the time.

Workers want consistency, too. One of Instawork’s recent surveys showed that 86% of workers on our platform wanted to work at least two to four shifts per week at the same business, and 55% wanted a whole week of shifts or more. Another one of our surveys suggested that more than 70% of these workers could commit to five days a week of shifts for a month or more.

    Step 4: Retention

Some businesses will want to make permanent hires as soon as the holiday season is over. But in other cases, a few brief and frenetic weeks may not be enough to make a decision. Here it’s important to offer an intermediate stage, like a long-term assignment, to avoid losing the relationship. When employers show commitment, workers are more likely to reciprocate.

Even for businesses that aren’t considering workers for permanent positions, holiday hiring isn’t just a one-shot deal. Most of them will need people in the years to come, and bringing the same people back will save time and money. In these situations, it’s important to offer workers an incentive — a bonus for returning, a promise of more training, a higher-level position, etc. For example, the best front-line workers this year might be your peak-time supervisors next year.

You can keep the relationships with temporary workers alive using small gestures during the year — a photo from the holidays, a birthday card or a reminder that you’ll be hoping to work with them again. These gestures don’t cost much, but they can save you thousands in recruiting and training.

All of these things come in addition to the basics that workers truly appreciate: helpful and upbeat co-workers, a clean, safe workplace and prompt payment for their time. Especially around the holidays, when shifts can be non-stop and intense, keeping a positive attitude and a touch of the festive spirit can go a long way to support morale. Just like in a family, there are some people you might only see for a few days a year — make that time count.

  • ‘Love Actually’ and ‘Elf’ Are Timeless, and Very Rooted in a Specific Era

‘Love Actually’ and ‘Elf’ Are Timeless, and Very Rooted in a Specific Era

    [ad_1]

New York Times critic A.O. Scott was forced to get into the Christmas spirit a little too early in 2003. On November 7—20 years ago today—he published two reviews, one deriding an “indigestible Christmas pudding” and the other celebrating a film with “sticky, gooey good cheer.” (Maybe holiday baking prep also started early that year?)

What Scott and probably nobody else quite realized at the time was that both of these November 7 releases were on their way to becoming Christmas classics, quite possibly the last of their kind. Love Actually and Elf, two movies about modern-day urbanites transformed by the power of Christmas, are not usually thought of in the same breath, as some kind of early millennial Christmas Barbenheimer. But they’re more alike than their individual, outsized reputations might suggest, and more particular to their era than many Christmas classics: specifically, the post-9/11 period in which they were made.

In Love Actually, the connection is obvious from the very start, as Hugh Grant’s prime minister warmly reminds viewers in voiceover: “When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge. They were all messages of love.” It’s wild, in retrospect, that a movie this warm and fuzzy chose to both begin and end at the airport, a place that was then newly synonymous with random security checks and a vague but unshakeable sense of dread. But it also fits with Love Actually’s dogged optimism that in the face of awfulness — the death of a spouse, infidelity, inexplicably being called fat by your loved ones — the human spirit can prevail.

Elf wears its era much more lightly, combining fantasy elements with a kind of twinkling Miracle on 34th Street charm in a way that would feel wildly risky in less capable hands. But this movie was filmed in New York City at the end of 2002—of course 9/11 is there if you look for it. When Will Ferrell’s Buddy the Elf visits the Empire State Building office of his grinchy father (James Caan), there’s an enormous American flag, framed behind glass, near the receptionist’s desk.
