I Think These Elevated Basics Are Peak Cool, and You Can Get Them for Under $100

Basics are essential items to any wardrobe, mostly because they’re so versatile. They can be paired with other items (including statement pieces and other basics) no matter your personal style. If you find yourself scrambling to put outfits together even though you own a wardrobe full of clothes, it may be time to invest in some reliable basics such as tank tops, shirts, and dress pants. Owning some of these staples is also essential if you are looking to build a capsule wardrobe, a tightly edited selection of clothing that will last and can be worn for any occasion.

Just because they are called basics doesn’t mean these items have to be boring. A simple tank top can be designed in a variety of cuts, styles, and colorways. I selected essential pieces that will elevate any outfit, from black body-con dresses to blazers and slip skirts. And as it just so happens, there are a lot of options to choose from under the $100 price mark. Scroll down to find my top picks.

Calling It: Every Chic Item French Girls Will Wear on Repeat Next Year

If you’re anything like me, these winter months (and The White Lotus) have you dreaming of a European summer. Posting up in the Marais, washing down pistachio gelato with an ice-cold Sancerre, and hitting those legendary French soldes all sound like good enough reason to peruse Expedia. But whether or not Europe is in the cards next year, French dressing can still be within reach.

The key to shopping like the French? Balancing practicality with style while leaving room for a little flair. French women have mastered the art of eschewing trends for more timeless pieces, meaning these purchases will serve you well beyond the year ahead. Read on for all the items our cross-Atlantic counterparts will be stocking their closets with. (Trust me—it’ll be cheaper than that Air France ticket.)

H&M Pulls Justin Bieber Merch After He Tells Fans Not to Buy It

After Justin Bieber slammed H&M on social media for releasing a collection allegedly “without [his] permission and approval,” the retailer announced it was pulling the products from its website and in stores.

Earlier this week, the pop star posted on his Instagram Stories: “I didn’t approve any of the merch collection that they put up at H&M… all without my permission and approval…SMH I wouldn’t buy it if I were you.” In a second slide, he added, “The H&M merch they made of me is trash and I didn’t approve it don’t buy it.”

  • Chloë Sevigny Says There Will Always Be It Girls

Chloë Sevigny Says There Will Always Be It Girls

Imagine you are hopped up on cough syrup awaiting the results of a Covid test. (It will be negative, but you don’t know that yet.) You are swaddled in a blur of plaid wool blankets; your throat is happily numb from a slather of Vicks VapoRub. Then your phone rings and it’s Chloë Sevigny.

She is at a raging H&M party in Brooklyn, which might as well be Mars because you’re not going anywhere anytime soon. And as you drift between the waking world and the cherry-flavored sludge of “get well soon” vibes, you realize even if you were face-to-face with Sevigny, who’s a brand ambassador for the retailer, it wouldn’t entirely matter. That’s because although she is a very real human, she’s also a kind of fever dream—a full (and wonderful) human who is also a looming avatar of cool, a Gen X icon who appears on Gen Z vision boards. She’s also a meme, because: 2022.

Here’s what Sevigny has to say about the plight of an It Girl, the sex appeal of cardigans, and the infomercial that saved her Miu Miu shirt.

What’s the oldest H&M piece you have in your closet?

Well, when Humberto (Leon) and Carol (Lim) did their Kenzo collaboration, I still have the blue dress I wore from that campaign, and a lot of stuff from them. Oh! I also have the Margiela stuff from 2012. Remember that? I feel like that collection really put H&M on a different level, because who can just call up Margiela, you know?

One of the arguments against fast fashion is that it’s not built to last. But you just name-checked H&M pieces from 10 years ago. What are your tips for making clothes—all clothes, not just expensive ones—last longer?

First, you’ve got to hand-wash things and hang them dry whenever you can. I know it takes longer, and I know not everyone can make that kind of time. But if you can, and you have the patience available, you’ve got to do it. It’s cheaper than dry cleaning, anyway! And then think about your detergent. Because I have a small child, I’ve been using this fragrance-free wash from Seventh Generation on everything. And if you need to get a stain out from a piece—when I have to do that on my very old Miu Miu pieces they gave me when I modeled for them? I use OXY on those.

The curtain cleaner from the infomercial?

Yep. I just dip them in and it makes them bright white again. I’ve been doing that forever.

A lot of the clothes you mentioned are gifts. What’s the best fashion present you’ve ever received?

You know, I just dug something out of storage. It’s a hand-knit cardigan sweater with my name sewn onto the front that Harmony Korine’s mother made for me. It’s so DIY and the care that went into it is pretty special. Patrick O’Dell photographed me in it [in 2005], but I’ve started wearing it again and it is still so good.

I feel like JW Anderson is gonna make you another version. It’ll be the new Harry Styles cardigan.

Wait, speaking of JW, I also have these things I call “Cinderella Dresses,” which are the clothes you wear once and have to give back to the designer. But every once in a while—not that often!—you get to keep them. So I have the JW dress that I wore to the Met Gala, and a Valentino dress from the Golden Globes, and they’re getting stored properly by Julie Ann Clauss—she’s The Digital Archivist on Instagram—so they don’t get messed up. There’s also an older dress from [Alexander] McQueen that is very, very special.

It’s been 28 years since Jay McInerney profiled you in The New Yorker and named you the It Girl of the ‘90s. Do you think New York It Girls can still exist now, or has the internet made it impossible for someone like Julia Fox to attain that kind of cultural aura?

I think there will always be It Girls, because there’s always going to be someone on the scene who’s extra spectacular. Whether it’s because of their natural style or presence or intellect—in many ways, it’s mostly intellect that sets you apart and lets you rise above the rest! Julia [Fox] sure, and also Paloma [Elsesser] and Hailey Benton Gates; they’ve all got that mix. They can light up a room, but they also can understand and calibrate the mood in those rooms.

  • Justin Bieber asks fans not to buy ‘trash’ merchandise from H&M – National | Globalnews.ca

Justin Bieber asks fans not to buy ‘trash’ merchandise from H&M – National | Globalnews.ca

Justin Bieber is upset that H&M is selling clothing featuring his likeness and lyrics, saying that the fast fashion giant didn’t ask for his approval to put his face on their clothes.

The Canadian pop star used his Instagram story to call out the retailer on Monday, calling the clothing “trash.”

“The H&M merch they made of me is trash and I didn’t approve it,” Bieber wrote, encouraging his 270 million followers to avoid purchasing it.

Justin Bieber says fashion giant H&M didn’t ask for his approval to use his face and lyrics on their clothing.

“I didn’t approve any of the merch collection that they put up at H&M,” he wrote in another slide. “All without my permission and approval.”

Clothes in the Hennes & Mauritz AB collection include T-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies featuring Bieber’s face, branding and lyrics, reports Bloomberg.

A representative for H&M disputed Bieber’s claims, telling CNN “as with all other licensed products and partnerships, H&M followed proper approval procedures.”

However, H&M said separately that it had removed the Bieber-related products from sale and they no longer appeared available in its online stores.

Bieber had previously partnered with the world’s second-biggest fashion retailer, allowing them to sell merchandise from his 2017 Purpose tour, as well as a follow-up collection in the same year.

It’s not the first time the brand’s faced backlash from a Canadian music celebrity. In 2018 Toronto’s The Weeknd said he would no longer work with H&M after they used a photo on their website of a young Black boy wearing a hoodie that said “Coolest monkey in the jungle.”

  • I Get Compliments Every Single Time I Wear These 3 Under-$100 Items

I Get Compliments Every Single Time I Wear These 3 Under-$100 Items

We all own that one piece of clothing we can’t get enough of, whether it’s a pair of jeans you can always rely on for a flattering outfit or the winter essentials you can’t live without as soon as the temperature drops. Some items just have that special quality that make them essentials and also compliment magnets from friends or strangers. And let’s be real: Getting complimented on an outfit or a piece of clothing feels amazing, especially when you’ve put effort into a specific look.

I zeroed in on three pieces of clothing I’ve been complimented on frequently, which have now become go-tos when putting outfits together. Faux leather is one of them. There’s something inherently sleek and fashionable when it comes to faux leather. We often think of pants or jackets, but there are so many options to choose from. Such versatility can also be found in knitwear (which has become a personal favorite in recent months). A good knit, whether it’s a maxi dress or a bustier top, makes any outfit stand out while keeping you cozy. You’ll also find various options when it comes to denim. It’s versatile and timeless, and I am convinced there’s a style of denim for everyone.

19 Pretty H&M Gems to Order While the Entire Site Is Still 30% Off

Like everyone else, I’m on the hunt for the very best deals this Cyber Monday, and as far as fashion sales go, H&M is one of the most cost-effective places to shop today. • I Searched High and Low for the Best Teddy Coats, and Here They Are

I Searched High and Low for the Best Teddy Coats, and Here They Are

It’s been a mild 60° across both coasts, but in case there was any doubt, as soon as the slightest hint of chill touches my skin, I’m slipping on a teddy coat. Teddy coats are soft, cozy, and quite literally the next best thing to wearing a blanket in public, so there really isn’t a con to owning one. Less stuffy than a sharp wool coat and more polished than a bulky puffer, it’s that nice middle ground between the outerwear extremes. It’s a quintessential winter piece that can be styled with jeans or tailored trousers.

While the finest of the bunch (aka Max Mara’s beloved Teddy Bear Icon Coat) can definitely enter splurge territory, plenty of quality options exist that won’t require a whole rent check. Thankfully, I found the best the internet has to offer—from under-$100 coats to sumptuous luxe options. • My Mom Is 62, and I’m 34—These Are the J.Crew, Nordstrom, and H&M Items We Love

My Mom Is 62, and I’m 34—These Are the J.Crew, Nordstrom, and H&M Items We Love

My mother and I actually have pretty similar tastes when it comes to clothes. Yes, this is despite our age difference. (I’m 34, and she’s 62.) As age has nothing to do with what you should or shouldn’t wear, it can easily make sense that we share similar sartorial sensibilities. On that note, three stores we happen to both like are J.Crew, Nordstrom, and H&M. On one of her recent visits, we actually scrolled through the websites of each of the retailers because she wanted a bit of shopping inspiration

To give you some inspo if that’s of interest, I thought it could be fun to highlight the specific pieces from the trio of retailers that both my mom and I love for the season. Given that we’re heading deeper into the colder months and toward the holiday season, we both gravitated to those cozy knits, gorgeous outerwear moments (like the J.Crew stunner above), and pieces that could be great for gifting. • 2022 Winter Basics So You’ll Always Have An Outfit

2022 Winter Basics So You’ll Always Have An Outfit

Global warming sure has made dressing for this weather impossible. One day, it’s sunny and 75 in November. The next it’s 40 with a chance of snow. I genuinely can’t win.

I’m addicted to the thought of having a closet full of essentials. One filled with endless options from merely twelve staple pieces. The sheer thought of waking up in the morning and knowing I have an outfit to wear gives me peace of mind.

But in the age of fast fashion, it’s difficult to find clothes that even last a full season. We’re all obsessed with buying discounted trendy pieces that cycle out of style in less than four months. And that makes for an over-cluttered and underwhelming closet.

@sydneynicolegiff winter fashion basics 🫶🏼 on my ‘in my cart’ amazon storefront list 🌲🖤☁️ the perfect winter essentials from amazon #winterfashiontrends #amazonfashionfinds2022 #amazoncart #winteressentials #wardrobeessential ♬ Down In Atlanta – Pharrell Williams & Travis Scott

I’ve purchased one too many statement pieces and now have a wardrobe with zero consistency. While I’m a fan of a mega-colorful print, the smart – and on trend – choice is to opt for neutrals this winter.

And honestly, thank God. I like to wear more muted colors as I am translucent pale in the winter, and bright colors wash me out even further. You could liken me to a ghost when hot pink hits my skin.

    @jolielynea @H&M i love u #clothinghaul #winterbasics #staplepieces #fashion #model ♬ Munch (Feelin’ U) – Ice Spice

I am a firm believer that winter is the easiest season to dress for. Throw on a basic long sleeve and a pair of flare knit pants and call it a day. Add a shacket around the house when I’m cold and that’s my winter uniform.

This 2022 winter season, I’m looking for the ultimate capsule closet. I want to sleep peacefully knowing I have an outfit in my closet at all times, for all events.

And lo and behold, I’ve found a few. Here are my picks:

    An Oversized Sweater

I couldn’t start this article without a trusty soft sweater. Wear it to work, to dinner, on a date, around the house, really wherever. Aerie’s version feels luxurious and is guaranteed high quality.

You only need two or three solid sweaters to get you through a winter season, anyway. Even if you want to purchase every single one.

    Long Sleeve Bodysuit

Once upon a time, I was a fan of the $12 bodysuit from a fast fashion website that accommodated my weak budget. However, said bodysuits would last three washes before falling apart.

Abercrombie has elevated their line of basics in recent years, making them my top pick for a long sleeve bodysuit. It flatters your curves and is double lined which gives you a bit more warmth and structure.

    Cozy Joggers

More often than not, I’m wearing loungewear in the winter. A solid pair of joggers that are soft and durable while keeping me warm are all I really need. And what better brand than Kim K’s fave blanket?

Barefoot Dreams joggers have changed my life. The coastal grandmother brand has stolen hearts for their plush blankets, but they also make clothing in the same beloved material.

    Leather Blazer

When hitting the town, I need a jacket. But I hate wearing jackets in the bar. A leather blazer keeps me warm without making me feel claustrophobic and goes with most any outfit.

Wearing a jacket doesn’t have to ruin your outfit like it once did! A blazer will look great draped over your shoulders when out on the weekends.

    Flare Jeans

Everyone has been loving the shapeless mom jean look lately, but let me remind you of the equally amazing flare jean. A little bit of shape but with a retro kick.

In the spirit of capsule closets, let it be known that you don’t need tons of jeans to get you through a season. In fact, I often only have one pair of mom jeans, one flare, one white, and one black.

By starting with the basics, you have endless options for an easy winter outfit. Remember that quality clothing items will last longer, saving you money in the long run.

Rihanna Just Wore the Legging Trend I Found at H&M for $13

On the one hand, it seems like we’ve all been wearing leggings for three years straight. On the other hand, Rihanna just stepped out wearing flared leggings and is serving serious outfit inspo. The singer was spotted on her way to dinner with Gigi Hadid in NYC wearing a sleek black button-down with split-hem flared leggings, Balenciaga knife boots, and killer shades. Simple, but statement-making.

Suddenly, this look is all we want to wear anywhere. And you don’t have to be a Rihanna-level style star to pull it off. We’ve found a bunch of flared leggings that can be dressed up a la Rih for a night out or dressed down if you’re living that work-from-home life. • This Puffer Trend Is So 2018, But These Ones Are So Right Now

This Puffer Trend Is So 2018, But These Ones Are So Right Now

In 2018, it seemed like all anyone wore, talked about, or posted was really big puffer jackets. It was almost as if the puffier your jacket was, the more street cred you had. Influencers, celebrities, and fashion girls alike took to the trend with ease and excitement as they proudly walked down the street, nearly knocking everyone over in the process. This extra-large puffer trend emerged at the peak when trends felt more like a shock factor than a way of dressing. I mean, back in 2018, this look was probably styled with micro sunglasses and chunky Balenciaga Triple S sneakers, and that was something we considered normal?

Luckily (depending on who you ask), the fashion industry has shifted away from all the frills and gimmicks toward a more stylized and wearable set of collections and trends that won’t get you weird stares as you walk around outside. But to bring it back to puffers—an extremely relevant topic considering we are now entering the coldest time of the year—if the oversized puffer was 2018, the tonal plain puffer you can wear with literally anything is so right now.

We aren’t even that far into winter, and already the fashion set is whipping out simple puffers and styling them in ways that are actually approachable. Complete with warm color palettes of creams, tans, browns, and more, all of those crazy-colored, patterned puffers that fit in no closet I’ve ever seen suddenly feel obsolete. This new wave of puffers also includes puffer vests, which I personally feel will be a fresh update to my all too often repetitive winter wardrobe.

Ahead, see exactly what this new wave of puffer dressing and styling is all about, and shop 18 of the best ones on the market should you want to buy into the trend.
