    fabdullahi@star-telegram.com

Two people were taken to a hospital after a Jeep crashed into a Fort Worth home on Sunday night.

Police said the vehicle was rear-ended by another car and then drove into the house in the 3700 block of East Berry Street. A resident and the driver of the Jeep were taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.

The red Jeep crashed through a window of the home and pushed a man out of his bedroom, according to neighbors.

One of the neighbors, Shanequa Jones, told Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV that the Jeep came across her parents’ lawn before hitting the neighbor’s house.

“All I heard was a boom, boom, boom as you see a car coming up through my mom’s yard and actually go inside those people’s window,” Jones told WFAA.

The driver of the dark-colored sedan that hit the Jeep and caused the accident didn’t stop, police said. Officers were still searching Tuesday for that hit-and-run driver.

“I was just thinking, oh my gosh this could have been us, this could have been anybody,” Jones said.

  • Aurora driver sentenced to five years in prison for hit-and-run that killed man, dog

    [ad_1]

A judge in Arapahoe County’s 18th Judicial District court sentenced an Aurora driver to five years in prison, followed by five years of mandatory parole, for the fatal killing of a 65-year-old man and his dog.

On the night of April 3, Michael Graham-Hyde, 73, killed Rafael Alberto Buitrago and his dog, Nova, while they were on a walk near East Wesley Drive and East Caspian Circle.

Graham-Hyde told police he had been awake for 38 hours after returning from an overseas trip when he fell asleep at the wheel and hit Buitrago and Nova, according to an arrest affidavit.

He got out of his SUV, saw Buitrago and “panicked,” choosing to drive away when he saw another car coming because he thought the other driver would stop and help, police wrote in the affidavit.

Graham-Hyde stood before Arapahoe County District Court Judge LaQunya Baker at Monday afternoon’s sentencing hearing and expressed deep remorse for crashing into Buitrago and fleeing the scene, a decision he said fills him with shame that he will carry for the rest of his life.

Watch: Scene of Berkeley pedestrian hit-and-run suspect vehicle recovered

    01:14

A hit-and-run driver in Berkeley injured multiple pedestrians on Tuesday in different locations, allegedly driving onto a sidewalk and later attempting to carjack another person before eventually being arrested, authorities said.

The Berkeley Police Department said dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting pedestrians hit on Belrose Avenue between Claremont Boulevard and Derby Street just south of the UC Berkeley campus. Callers reported that the vehicle drove onto the sidewalk and hit two people, police said.

While officers were responding, dispatchers updated that the suspect had fled west on Derby Street, and the suspect vehicle, a gray BMW sedan, was found abandoned in the area of Garber Street and Piedmont Avenue next to Emerson Elementary School. Police said the suspect attempted to carjack another vehicle at that location before running away. The unidentified suspect was quickly located and arrested two blocks west on College Avenue.

Officers found a third victim on Derby Street, who, along with the two other pedestrians, was taken to a hospital for medical treatment. All the victims are adults, and their conditions were not disclosed. Police said there were five separate crime scenes under investigation.

A spokesperson for Berkeley Public Schools said there was no impact to operations at Emerson Elementary as the suspect car was abandoned outside the school before the start of the school day.

Police said officers were still in the field interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence, and additional information would be released as it becomes available.

Anyone with information or video footage was asked to contact the Berkeley Police Department.

  • Cyclist fatally struck by speeding driver in hit-and-run crash in West Philly

    [ad_1]

A bicyclist was struck and killed by a speeding driver in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday morning in West Philadelphia, police said.

The crash happened around 9:50 a.m. on the 1600 block of Belmont Avenue, a section of Fairmount Park near the Please Touch Museum and the Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center.

MORE: SEPTA to refund bus riders who were overcharged on Monday

A black Dodge Charger and a black Chrysler were both speeding along Belmont Avenue as they approached Avenue of the Republic, where the cyclist was traveling east when he was struck by one of the vehicles, police said. The cyclist was thrown from his bike and later taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. He has not been identified.

On the way to the scene, investigators spotted the Dodge Charger parked on the side of the 3200 block of Sedgley Avenue. Police said they observed a group of men who appeared to be inspecting the front end of the car for damage. Officers stopped to investigate and seized the vehicle. Authorities did not provide details on the whereabouts of the Chrysler and whether the driver of that car is sought in the investigation.

No arrests have been made, police said.

The crash marks the fourth time this year that a cyclist has been killed in a collision with a car in the city. There were three cyclists killed in crashes in Philadelphia last year, down from 10 in 2023. Earlier this year, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia reported that traffic deaths in the city have plateaued in recent years after spiking at 158 in 2020. There were 124 traffic deaths last year and 64 this year, including Tuesday morning’s crash.

In this year’s budget, Philadelphia made a $30 million investment over the next six years in the city’s Vision Zero initiative to improve traffic safety. The increase in funding came a year after Mayor Cherelle Parker had made cuts to the Vision Zero program. The city saw an uptick in activism among cyclists after 30-year-old Barbara Friedes, a doctor at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, was fatally struck by a drunk driver in Rittenhouse in July 2024. The driver in that case was sentenced to spend between six and 20 years in prison.

Police said anyone with information about Tuesday’s hit-and-run crash can call the department’s tip line at 215-686-8477 or submit an anonymous tip online.

Colorado Supreme Court building to reopen after break-in, fire caused $35 million in damage

    [ad_1]

After nearly 10 months of extensive repairs and cleaning, the Colorado Supreme Court building will reopen its doors to the public on Tuesday.

“The Ralph L. Carr Judicial Center is an important symbol in our legal community — it is the hub of activity for a number of agencies critical to our judicial system,” Chief Justice Monica M. Márquez said in a news release. “Its partial reopening marks a significant milestone in the recovery process from the devasting events that severely damaged the tower complex earlier this year.”

Brandon Olsen, 45, allegedly shot through a window and broke into the court building in the early morning of Jan. 2 while fleeing from a car crash at 13th Avenue and Lincoln Street, police said.

The 45-year-old faces charges of arson, robbery and criminal mischief in connection with the incident, according to court records. He is accused of holding a security guard at gunpoint and starting a fire on the seventh floor of the building.

The seventh-floor fire was extinguished by the building’s sprinklers, which ran for a couple of hours and caused significant water damage. In total, the break-in caused $35 million in damages and left four floors unusable, court officials said.

Floors 3 through 7 are currently being rebuilt from scratch and are expected to reopen next summer, building officials said.

During the building’s initial reopening next week, the public will have access to floors 1 and 2 of the office tower between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Access to floors 8 through 12 will be available by appointment only.
