    In a striking demonstration of growth and commitment to financial inclusivity, the country’s six digital banks have reported impressive growth, outperforming traditional banking institutions in expanding access to financial services. 

    From September 2023 to December 2023, the digital banking sector experienced a 27% growth in their depositor base, significantly higher than the overall banking system’s growth of 4%. This has elevated the total digital banking depositor base to 5.9 million as of the end of December 2023. 

    “Digital banks are changing the game for financial inclusion in the country beyond access. This kind of growth in such a short amount of time is unprecedented in terms of onboarding the unbanked and underserved,” said Angelo Madrid, president of the Digital Bank Association of the Philippines (DiBA PH) and president of Maya Bank.

    This outstanding growth involves the country’s only six licensed digital banks: GoTyme Bank, Maya Bank, Overseas Filipino Bank, Tonik Bank, UnionDigital Bank, and UNO Digital Bank. These organizations are the founding members of the industry association DiBA PH. 

    Robust growth trajectory 

    Since the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) introduced the digital banking category in 2021, the sector has evolved rapidly, setting the stage for all six banks to go live by 2023. 

    Despite their recent entry into the market, these banks have reported a near doubling of deposits from over 35 billion to 69 billion from 2022 to 2023, with gross total loan portfolio increasing from over 11 billion to nearly 25 billion for the same period. 

    These milestones were achieved despite considerable infrastructural challenges, including the rollout of the national ID system and limited coverage by the national credit bureau. 

    Growing Financial Inclusion 

    According to the BSP Financial Inclusion Survey for 2021, only 23% of the 56% of the adult population with financial accounts have bank accounts. The number of savers is much less with

    31% of the adults with savings putting their money in banks. Only 4% of adults with loans get their credit from banks. 

    Since their introduction, digital banks have transcended infrastructural limitations to significantly boost financial inclusion, offering deposit accounts and credit to populations that traditional banks have typically overlooked. 

    “This democratization of financial services is a testament to the potential of technology-driven banking solutions to foster economic empowerment and inclusivity,” added Manish Bhai, DiBA trustee and founder-CEO at UNO Digital Bank. 

    “The growth of digital banks highlights the sustained shift in consumer demands towards accessible, responsive, and user-friendly financial services. We are pleased with the digital banking sector’s trajectory and its rippling effect towards a larger banking trend of optimizing technology in providing financial services. We now keenly anticipate the next wave of innovative and bespoke services that will address the needs of the banking public.” said BSP deputy governor Chuchi Fonacier.

    Looking ahead, the industry’s stability is a priority, as outlined by Long Pineda, vice president of DiBA PH and chairperson of Tonik Digital Bank, Inc. “The next three years are pivotal for reinforcing the digital banking sector’s foundations, scaling lending operations, and solidifying confidence among investors and customers alike,” Pineda emphasized, highlighting the sector’s ambition for sustainable growth and broader financial inclusivity.

    To help combat misinformation with the rise of generative AI in content creation, YouTube is launching an important content-labeling disclosure tool within Creator Studio aimed at fostering greater transparency and trust between creators and their audiences.

    The new tool, integrated into Creator Studio, requires creators to disclose when realistic content, which viewers could easily mistake for real, is produced using altered or synthetic media, including generative AI. 

    Some examples of content that require disclosure include: 

    • Using the realistic likeness of a person: Digitally altering content to replace the face of one individual with another’s or synthetically generating a person’s voice to narrate a video.
    • Altering footage of real events or places: Making things look different from how they are or happened, such as making it appear as if a real building caught fire, or altering a real cityscape.
    • Generating realistic scenes: Showing a realistic depiction of fictional major events, like a tornado moving toward a real town.

    Labels indicating the use of altered or synthetic media will appear in both the expanded description and, for sensitive topics like health or news, prominently within the video player itself. These labels will gradually roll out across all YouTube platforms in the coming weeks, ensuring consistency and clarity for viewers.

    Google and YouTube recognize the growing need for viewers to discern between altered or synthetic content and authentic material, and this initiative underscores the company’s commitment to responsible AI innovation, building upon the disclosure requirements and labels first announced in November 2023.

    However, Google also acknowledges that generative AI serves various legitimate purposes in the creative process, such as generating scripts or enhancing productivity. In these cases, disclosure is not required.

    In collaboration with industry partners, Google remains committed to increasing transparency surrounding digital content. As a steering member of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), Google actively contributes to initiatives promoting trust and accountability in online content.

    In addition to this, Google is working towards an updated privacy process to address requests for the removal of AI-generated or synthetic content that simulates identifiable individuals. This global initiative underscores Google’s dedication to safeguarding user privacy and maintaining the integrity of its platforms.

    With its commitment to creating and maintaining a safer internet experience for people all over the world, the 2023 Ads Safety Report by Google discussed its boosted and AI-enhanced efforts to protect everyone against malicious and misleading online ads.

    The biggest of Google’s key wins was the removal and blocking of over 5.5 billion “bad” ads in 2023, up from 2022, and an initiative that was optimized by the power of generative AI. Gen AI was able to make safety enforcement easier by providing a better way to train already-existing AI systems to detect malicious ads before internet users ever see them in their browsing.

    The other steps Google took were:

    Limited unfamiliar advertisers: In November 2023, Google launched its new Limited Ads Serving policy, which is designed to protect users by limiting the reach of “unfamiliar” advertisers. It implemented a “get-to-know-you” period for advertisers who don’t yet have an established track record of good behavior, during which impressions for their ads might be limited in certain circumstances—such as when there is an unclear relationship between the advertiser and a brand they are referencing. 

    Quickly adapted to new trends: Toward the end of 2023 and into 2024, Google saw a targeted campaign of ads featuring the likeness of public figures to scam users, often through the use of deepfakes. The company immediately created a dedicated team to respond, pinpointing patterns in the bad actors’ behavior, training its automated enforcement models to detect similar ads, and beginning to remove them at scale. Google also updated its misrepresentation policy to more quickly suspend the accounts of bad actors.

    Prevented the use of synthetic content in election ads: In 2023, Google was the first tech company to launch a new disclosure requirement for election ads containing synthetic content. It also continued to enforce its policies against misleading claims in election-related ads.

    Launched the Ads Transparency Center: Last year, Google also launched the Ads Transparency Center, a searchable hub of all ads from verified advertisers, which helps people quickly and easily learn more about the ads they see on Search, YouTube, and Display.

    Added more customization and optimization features: The company also updated its suitability controls to make it simpler and quicker for advertisers to exclude topics that they wish to avoid across YouTube and Display inventory. In total, Google made 31 updates to its Ads and Publisher policies.

    Heading into the rest of 2024, Google rides the momentum of its 2023 results and the developments in the field of AI to look ahead to an equally promising year keeping people safe online.

    Only one percent of organizations in the Philippines have the ‘Mature’ level of readiness needed to be resilient against modern cybersecurity risks, according to Cisco’s 2024 Cybersecurity Readiness Index.  

    The 2024 Cisco Cybersecurity Readiness Index was developed in an era defined by hyperconnectivity and a rapidly evolving threat landscape. Companies today continue to be targeted with a variety of techniques that range from phishing and ransomware to supply chain and social engineering attacks. And while they are building defenses against these attacks, they still struggle to defend against them, slowed down by their own overly complex security postures that are dominated by multiple-point solutions. 

    These challenges are compounded in today’s distributed working environments, where data can be spread across limitless services, devices, applications, and users. However, 78% of companies still feel moderately to very confident in their ability to defend against a cyberattack with their current infrastructure — this disparity between confidence and readiness suggests that companies may have misplaced confidence in their ability to navigate the threat landscape and may not be properly assessing the true scale of the challenges they face.

    2024 Cisco Cybersecurity Readiness Index: Underprepared and Overconfident Companies Tackle an Evolving Threat Landscape

    The Index assesses the readiness of companies on five key pillars: Identity Intelligence, Network Resilience, Machine Trustworthiness, Cloud Reinforcement, and AI Fortification, which are comprised of 31 corresponding solutions and capabilities. It is based on a double-blind survey of more than 8,000 private sector security and business leaders across 30 global markets conducted by an independent third party. The respondents were asked to indicate which of these solutions and capabilities they had deployed and the stage of deployment. Companies were then classified into four stages of increasing readiness: Beginner, Formative, Progressive, and Mature.

    “We cannot underestimate the threat posed by our own overconfidence,” said Jeetu Patel, executive vice president and general manager of Security and Collaboration at Cisco. “Today’s organizations need to prioritize investments in integrated platforms and lean into AI in order to operate at machine scale and finally tip the scales in the favor of defenders.”

    Findings

    Overall, the study found that only one percent of companies in the Philippines are ready to tackle today’s threats, with 64% of organizations falling into the Beginner or Formative stages of readiness. Globally, 3% of companies are at a Mature stage. Further:

    • Future Cyber Incidents Expected: 67% of respondents said they expect a cybersecurity incident to disrupt their business in the next 12 to 24 months. The cost of being unprepared can be substantial, as 59% of respondents said they experienced a cybersecurity incident in the last 12 months, and 36% of those affected said it cost them at least USD300,000. 
    • Point Solution Overload: The traditional approach of adopting multiple cybersecurity point solutions has not delivered effective results, as 76% of respondents admitted that having multiple point solutions slowed down their team’s ability to detect, respond, and recover from incidents. This raises significant concerns as 66% of organizations said they have deployed ten or more point solutions in their security stacks, while 24% said they have 30 or more.​ 
    • Unsecure and Unmanaged Devices Add Complexity: 85% of companies said their employees access company platforms from unmanaged devices​, and 38% of those spend one-fifth (20%) of their time logged onto company networks from unmanaged devices. ​Additionally, 34% reported that their employees hop between at least six networks over a week.
    • The Cyber Talent Gap Persists: Progress is being further hampered by critical talent shortages, with 91% of companies highlighting it as an issue. In fact, 36% of companies said they had more than ten roles related to cybersecurity unfilled in their organization at the time of the survey.
    • Future Cyber Investments Ramping Up: Companies are aware of the challenge and are ramping up their defenses with over half (68%) planning to significantly upgrade their IT infrastructure in the next 12 to 24 months. This is a marked increase from half (54%) who planned to do so last year. Most prominently, organizations plan to upgrade existing solutions (70%), deploy new solutions (51%), and invest in AI-driven technologies (39%). Further, almost all (99%) companies surveyed expect to increase their cybersecurity budget in the next 12 months, and 92% of respondents say their budgets will increase by 10% or more.

    To overcome the challenges of today’s threat landscape, companies must accelerate meaningful investments in security, including the adoption of innovative security measures and a security platform approach, strengthen their network resilience, establish meaningful use of generative AI, and ramp up recruitment to bridge the cybersecurity skills gap.

    “The threat landscape today is more complicated than ever and organizations globally including those in the Philippines continue to lag in their cyber resilience. Companies need to adopt a platform approach that will provide a simple, secure, single pane of glass view into their entire architecture to strengthen their security posture and best take advantage of the opportunities that come with emerging technologies,” said Zaza Soriano-Nicart, managing director, Cisco Philippines.

    In its mission to promote road safety awareness and prevent road-related incidents, NLEX Corporation launched a picture book at the National Library of the Philippines entitled “Ang Bida ng Kalsada” to educate kids on the importance of responsible road usage through a creative story and illustrations.

    “The ‘Ang Bida ng Kalsada Picture Book’ is our modest contribution and response to UNICEF’s call to action to protect our children who use the road as pedestrians, as passengers, and as responsible members of the community. The story of Danny and Dexter, the main characters in the book, is rich with invaluable road safety lessons that children can easily connect with,” said NLEX Corporation president and general manager, J. Luigi L. Bautista

    This full-colored book written in Filipino and English helps children appreciate road safety by understanding the context behind different traffic rules and regulations in a story covering a child’s journey from the house. The book will be distributed to Grades 3-6 public school students in 20 schools within NLEX, SCTEX, and NLEX Connector’s host communities.

    Director Marilyn Siao of DepEd’s Bureau of Learning and Delivery extended her gratitude towards NLEX, as the book not only teaches safe road practices but also good values. 

    “In the pages of this beautifully illustrated book that we launched today, children embarked on a journey filled with important lessons about being responsible pedestrians, about being conscientious passengers, and active members of the community. Through captivating storytelling and vibrant imagery, they not only learn the rules of the road, but also embrace values of caution, obedience, compassion, and cooperation,” she said.

    In November 2021, the Metro Pacific Tollway Corporation, the mother company of NLEX Corporation, entered a multi-year agreement with UNICEF, pledging support for its Child Road Safety Program under the United Nations’ Second Decade of Action for Road Safety. Under the partnership, NLEX has committed to assisting 100 schools in identified high-risk areas.

    “It is our hope that initiatives like these will contribute to the reduction of road accidents. As parents who trust our children to venture beyond the safety of our homes, and as teachers who bid farewell to students at day’s end, we hold onto the hope of seeing our children become responsible road users. We also hope this picture book can bring about positive change in the lives of children, parents, and teachers alike,” said Bautista. 

    ‘Ang Bida ng Kalsada’ is just one of NLEX’s efforts to contribute to UNICEF’s goal to reduce road traffic fatalities by fifty percent (50%) by the year 2030. Dr. Angel Umali, UNICEF Philippines’s Health and Nutrition Officer thanked NLEX for its commitment to the advocacy and urged the tollway company to continue its efforts in organizing and implementing programs that will enhance children’s welfare.

    “Sa lahat ng ating mga proyekto at gawain, kailangan nating tignan ang kapakanan ng mga kabataan sapagkat kapag ginawa nating ligtas ang ating mga kalsada para sa mga bata, ito ay ligtas na rin para sa lahat,” Dr. Umali said.

    Prior to the agreement with UNICEF, NLEX has already been at the forefront of promoting road safety through various initiatives like Kaligtasan sa Daan (KalSaDa), Biyahero Road Safety Caravan, and Usapang Drayber. All of these aim to instill the value of road safety and responsible road usage.

    Aside from these road safety awareness initiatives, NLEX recently established a Road Traffic Safety Hub and Park in Mabalacat, Pampanga. The said park facility provides an educational avenue for its stakeholders, including children, to be exposed to and educated on safe road practices.

    With the success of the opening of the RTS Hub and park and the recent launch of the ‘Ang Bida ng Kalsada’ child road safety picture book, NLEX pledges to continuously work with different organizations and government agencies in initiating programs that will benefit young road users.

(Smart) is driving wider eSIM adoption among Filipinos as it now enables prepaid subscribers to conveniently switch their physical SIM to an eSIM without changing their number — the first service of its kind for prepaid customers in the Philippines.

    The digital version of the physical SIM, embedded SIM, or eSIM offers a quick and easy way for mobile users to enjoy data, call, and text services without inserting a physical SIM card into their device.     “This groundbreaking service for prepaid customers builds on Smart’s existing capability to enable fast and convenient eSIM upgrades for postpaid subscribers. Now, it’s easier than ever to port into the Smart network and get your eSIM – whether you’re on postpaid or prepaid,” said Shing N. Dimagiba, head of Postpaid at Smart.

    Smart Signature subscribers and Smart Infinity members may upgrade to an eSIM by simply heading to any Smart Store. On the other hand, non-Smart postpaid customers may switch to a Smart Postpaid eSIM by obtaining their Unique Subscriber Code from their current network provider and then submitting the required documents to the nearest Smart Store.

    Making eSIM accessible to all Filipinos

    By being able to upgrade their physical SIM to an eSIM while keeping their number, mobile users avoid the usual hassles that come with having a new number — bellfrom tediously informing their contacts to painstakingly updating apps and online accounts linked to their number.
