  • Worker dies after Rome’s medieval Torre dei Conti tower partially collapses during renovation work

Rome — Firefighters late Monday finally managed to extract a worker from beneath rubble inside a medieval tower that partially collapsed during renovation work in the heart of Italy’s capital, but the joy of that rescue proved short-lived.

The man didn’t withstand the trauma he suffered and died soon thereafter.

“I express deep sorrow and condolences, on behalf of myself and the government, for the tragic loss of Octay Stroici, the worker who was killed in the collapse of the Torre dei Conti in Rome,” Italy’s Premier Giorgia Meloni said in a statement after midnight. “We are close to his family and colleagues at this time of unspeakable suffering.”

Images broadcast on local television had shown a trio of rescuers loading the man onto a telescopic aerial ladder, then descending and wheeling him on a stretcher into an ambulance. His state wasn’t immediately clear, but Adriano De Acutis, chief commander of Rome’s firefighters, said on state television channel RAI that he was conscious.

“Since the conditions seem serious, they will now evaluate him and he was immediately taken to the hospital,” Lamberto Giannini, prefect of Rome, told reporters at the time.

Rescuers had faced a complex task as they tried to use a first-floor window to get near the trapped worker. But they were forced to retreat in a cloud of debris as the structure continued to give way. Another approach on two ladders was also aborted, and a drone sent up in their stead.

As dusk approached, firefighters lifted on a crane used giant tubes to suck rubble out of the second-floor window. They continued the work late into the night.

“The operation lasted a long time because every time a part of the body was freed, there was additional rubble that covered it,” Giannini said.

Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri had told reporters earlier that the worker was speaking to rescuers and using an oxygen mask. He added that rescuers were working with extreme caution in “a very delicate extraction operation” to avoid further collapses.

Three workers were rescued unharmed after the initial midday incident, said firefighter spokesperson Luca Cari. Another worker, age 64, was hospitalized in critical condition; RAI reported he was conscious and had suffered a broken nose.

No firefighters were injured in the ensuing operation.

The Torre dei Conti was built in the 13th century by Pope Innocent III as a residence for his family. The tower was damaged in a 1349 earthquake and suffered subsequent collapses in the 17th century.

Hundreds of tourists had gathered to watch as firefighters used a mobile ladder to bring a stretcher to the upper level of the Torre dei Conti during the first rescue attempt. Suddenly, another part of the structure crumbled, sending up a cloud of debris and forcing firefighters to quickly descend.

The first collapse struck the central buttress of the structure’s southern side, and caused an underlying sloped base to fall. The second damaged part of the stairwell and roof, cultural heritage officials said in a statement.

Queen Paglinawan, 27, was attending to a client in a gelato parlor next door when the tower first started coming apart.

“I was working and then I heard something falling, and then I saw the tower collapse in a diagonal way,″ Paglinawan, 27, told The Associated Press as yet more rubble crashed down.

The tower, which has been closed since 2007, is undergoing a 6.9 million euro (nearly $8 million) restoration that includes conservation work, the installation of electrical, lighting and water systems and a new museum installation dedicated to the most recent phases of the Roman Imperial Forum, officials said.

Before the latest phase was started in June, structural surveys and load tests were carried out “to verify the stability of the structure, which confirmed the safety conditions necessary” to proceed with work, including asbestos removal, officials said. The current work, carried out at a cost of 400,000 euros ($460,000), was just about complete.

Italian prosecutors arrived at the scene as the rescue operation was underway, and were investigating possible charges for negligent disaster and negligent injuries, Italian media reported. It is common in Italy for investigations to begin while an event is ongoing and before possible suspects are identified.

German student Viktoria Braeu had just finished a tour at the nearby Colosseum and was passing by the scene during the firefighters’ initial rescue attempt.

“And then we were like, ‘It’s probably not long until it’s going to go down,’ and then it just started erupting,’” said Braeu, 18.

Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Meloni had shared her hopes for a successful rescue.

“My thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to the person currently fighting for his life under the rubble and to his family, for whom I sincerely hope that this tragedy will have a positive outcome,” Meloni said in a statement.

“I would like to thank all the law enforcement officers, firefighters, and rescue workers who are intervening with courage, professionalism, and dedication in this extremely difficult situation.”

  • Several hurt after apartment balcony collapses in Cincinnati

At least 10 people were injured when the wooden balcony of a third-floor apartment collapsed Friday evening in Cincinnati, Ohio, officials said.

Cincinnati Fire Chief Frank McKinley told reporters that the balcony collapsed at an apartment complex in the Corryville neighborhood, located just off the campus of the University of Cincinnati.

McKinley said 10 people were rushed to local hospitals, at least one of whom sustained life-threatening injuries. The exact conditions of the victims were not immediately provided.

The circumstances leading up to the collapse were still unknown.

“From what we’re being told, it was a gathering, many of these individuals were students,” McKinley said. “We don’t have the detailed information of what was actually being celebrated.”

The fire chief also said it was unclear how many people were on the balcony when it collapsed. He said the situation is under investigation and the university has been notified.

  • Indonesia school collapse kills at least 3, sparks race to find dozens of survivors under rubble

Sidoarjo, Indonesia — Indonesian rescue workers were racing against the clock Wednesday to try to find survivors from a school collapse in the province of East Java. At least 91 students were still unaccounted for, three were confirmed dead and about 100 others injured.

The Islamic boarding school, which authorities said was undergoing an unauthorized expansion to add two new stories, collapsed during afternoon prayers on Monday, sending slabs of concrete and other heavy debris crashing onto the students below.

Most rescues typically happen within 24 hours after such a disaster, with chances of survival decreasing each day after that, and more than 300 workers continued to work desperately at the scene to try and reach people still thought to be alive and trapped below.

“We hope that we can complete this operation soon,” Mohammad Syafii, head of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency, told reporters. “We are currently racing against time because it is possible that we can still save lives of those we have detected within the golden hours.”

Of the approximately 100 injured, 26 were still hospitalized Wednesday and many were said to have suffered head injuries and broken bones, authorities said.

Syafii’s agency said at least six children were believed to be alive under the rubble, but the search was complicated, with the slabs of concrete and other parts of the building remaining unstable. Heavy equipment was available but was not being used due to concerns it could cause further collapse.

Rescuers have been running oxygen, water and food through narrow gaps in the rubble to those still trapped under the debris to keep them alive.

Search teams have also used detectors and thermal drones to detect potential survivors who could be rescued.

The structure fell on top of hundreds of people at about 2:30 p.m. local time on Monday in a prayer hall at the century-old al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, on the eastern side of Indonesia’s Java island.

The students were mostly boys in grades seven to 12, between ages 12 and 18. Female students were praying in another part of the building and managed to escape, survivors said.

The prayer hall was two stories high but two more were being added without a permit, according to authorities. Police said the old building’s foundation was apparently unable to support two floors of concrete and collapsed during the pouring process.

Authorities initially had said only 38 people were missing but revised that upward to 91 late Tuesday after consulting attendance lists and talking with families.

“In the early stages there will inevitably be some confusion about the data,” said Suharyanto, the head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, who only goes by one name as is common in Indonesia.

  • Satellite images show aftermath of devastating Afghanistan earthquake

The United Nations Satellite Center (UNOSAT) has released satellite images showing the aftermath of a 6.0 magnitude earthquake with a death toll that has surpassed 1,400 and which left more than 3,000 injured, according to The Associated Press on Tuesday.

    Why It Matters

The earthquake is Afghanistan’s deadliest since the October 2023 Herat quakes that claimed over 2,400 lives, and the third major earthquake since the Taliban came to power in 2021.

Civil defense workers and soldiers clear rubble in Mazar Dara in Afghanistan on September 2, 2025 as they search for survivors after a powerful earthquake struck the east of the country on August 31.

Many mountainous and remote villages were cut off by massive rockfalls, complicating rescue efforts and highlighting the country’s vulnerability to natural catastrophes. Under Taliban rule, Afghanistan continues to grapple with limited resources, economic sanctions and reduced international aid, making timely relief and recovery efforts even more challenging.

    What To Know

Satellite imagery captured on Tuesday confirmed widespread structural damage across multiple districts in Nangarhar province, UNOSAT said.

Numerous buildings have collapsed or have been damaged in Jalalabad, Goshta and Kama.

The earthquake rocked eastern Afghanistan late on Sunday, striking Kunar province, 16 miles east of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, near the border with Pakistan.

According to The Associated Press, Tuesday’s death toll figures provided by government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid were just for the province of Kunar. The Taliban government has appealed for international humanitarian assistance and several countries and organizations have pledged aid.

    What People Are Saying

Charity organization Save The Children said: “Children and their families were fast asleep in their homes—homes that are not built to withstand tremors of this magnitude…Roads have been blocked by rocks, cutting off villages and hampering rescue operations…The true scale of the devastation is still emerging, but we know that children are always the most vulnerable in the aftermath of a disaster.”

Sharafat Zaman, a spokesperson for the health ministry in Kabul, called for international aid, according to The Guardian on Tuesday: “We need it because here lots of people lost their lives and houses.”

    What Happens Next

Casualty figures are expected to rise further, the U.N. has warned.

  • Hope for South Africa building collapse survivors fuels massive search and rescue operation

Hope for South Africa building collapse survivors fuels massive search and rescue operation

Cape Town, South Africa — Rescue teams searching for dozens of construction workers missing after an apartment complex collapsed in South Africa brought out more survivors Tuesday as they entered a second night of desperate work to find anyone alive in the wreckage. At least seven people have been confirmed dead.

Authorities said 26 workers had been rescued from the site where the five-story building collapsed Monday while under construction in George, about 250 miles east of Cape Town on South Africa’s south coast. An additional 42 people were still believed to be buried in the debris of concrete and metal scaffolding.

Rescuers were hopeful of more people being found alive after saying earlier that they had made contact with at least 11 workers trapped in the rubble and were communicating with them.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many of those had been rescued, but five survivors were brought out on Tuesday, adding to the 21 found on Monday, according to a count provided by city authorities. There were 75 construction workers on the site when the building collapsed.

Rescuers erupted in applause as one of the survivors was brought to the surface. They yelled at the man to “stay with us!” as he was pulled out of a gap in the wreckage and put on a stretcher. They then shouted to him, “you are outside now!”

Authorities haven’t given updated details on the extent of the injuries but said in the first few hours after the collapse that at least 11 of the workers rescued had severe injuries.

Colin Deiner, head of the provincial Western Cape disaster management services, said the search-and-rescue operation would likely take at least three days. He said it would take at least the rest of Tuesday to bring out all 11 of the survivors they had located, which included a group of four workers trapped in what was the basement of the building.

Some of those workers had limbs under concrete slabs and couldn’t move, Deiner said.

“We are going to give it the absolute maximum time to see how many people we can rescue,” Deiner said at a news conference. “It is very, very difficult if you are working with concrete breakers and drillers close to people.”

“Our big concern is entrapment for many hours, when a person’s body parts are compressed. So, you need to get medical help to them. We got our medics in as soon as we possibly could.”

Deiner said it was possible that there were more survivors deeper in the wreckage and a process of removing layers of concrete would begin in time.

More than 100 emergency services and other personnel had been working on the site in shifts. Rescuers were using sniffer dogs to try to locate workers. Large cranes and other heavy lifting equipment was brought in to help and tall spotlights were erected to allow the rescuers to work in the dark.

Deiner said a critical part of the rescue operation came when they had ordered everyone to remain quiet and shut off machinery so they could listen for any survivors. That’s when they located some of them, he said.

“We were actually hearing people through the rubble,” Deiner said.

Several local hospitals were making space in their trauma units in anticipation that more people might be brought out alive. More than 50 emergency responders had also been brought in from other towns and cities to help, including a specialized team that deals with rescue operations in collapsed structures.

Family and friends of the workers had gathered at the nearby municipal offices and were being supported by social workers, the George municipality said.

Authorities were starting investigations into what caused the tragedy and a criminal case was opened by police, but there was no immediate information on why the building collapsed. CCTV footage from a nearby home showed the concrete structure and metal scaffolding suddenly collapsing, causing a plume of dust to rise over the neighborhood.

People came streaming out of other buildings after the collapse, with some of them screaming and shouting.

Alan Winde, the premier of the Western Cape province, said there would be investigations by both the provincial government and the police.

Authorities said that under city law the private construction company’s engineers were responsible for the safety of the building site until its completion, when it would be handed over to the city to check and clear.

Winde said the priority was the rescue effort and investigations would unfold after that.

“At the moment, officials are focused on saving lives. This is our top priority at this stage,” Winde said.

The national government was being briefed on the rescue operation, Winde said. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa released a statement offering his condolences to families of the victims and also called for investigations into the cause of the collapse.

About a dozen people hurt in hangar collapse on grounds of Boise airport: officials

BOISE, Idaho — A hanger under construction on the grounds of the airport in Boise, Idaho, collapsed Wednesday, injuring about a dozen people, officials said.

Authorities responded at about 5 p.m. to a private business located at the Boise Airport for a steel framed hangar that collapsed, Boise Fire Department Operations Chief Aaron Hummel said during a news briefing.

Everyone who had been at the site had been accounted for as of Wednesday evening, he said. Hummel wouldn’t comment on the condition of those injured or say whether anyone had died. He said officials were first working to contact family members.

“It was a very chaotic scene,” Hummel said, describing the incident as a “large-scale collapse” of the framework of the building.

“I don’t know what caused it, but I can tell you it was a pretty global collapse,” he said, calling it “catastrophic.”

Boise Airport operations were not impacted, officials said.

Terra Furman was driving on Interstate 84 about a quarter mile (400 meters) from the airport at about 5:30 p.m. when she spotted at least 20 police cars, ambulances and firetrucks around what she described as a crane folded in half and a building in the shape of an ‘M.’

“The walls were still up at a point and the middle collapsed in on either side,” she said.

Hummel said some of the victims were on a hoist or other elevated platform at the time the structure fell, and that required some specialized rescue efforts. He said a crane also collapsed in the incident.

Leticia Ramirez, a spokesperson for Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, said emergency and trauma teams were working with first responders to treat patients who arrived from the scene.

Authorities are investigating what caused the collapse.

  • Collapse of building basement walls prompts evacuation of apartment building in New Jersey

Collapse of building basement walls prompts evacuation of apartment building in New Jersey

HAWTHORNE, New Jersey (WABC) — The walls of a basement collapsed in a New Jersey apartment building Sunday morning, forcing the evacuation of residents.

The walls caved in shortly after 9 a.m. at the Hawthorne Gardens apartment complex at 100 Rock Road in Hawthorne, affecting a two-story building that houses about 20 families, according to Hawthorne Mayor John Lane.

The mayor says half of the basement and the building are now considered unsafe.

Officials originally evacuated four units that were compromised, but further investigation found a stress crack on another section of the building, which prompted officials to evacuate the entire building.

Donna Petrillo was inside around 9 a.m. when everything started shaking.

“I heard the loudest bang ever and then I noticed one of my pictures was off the wall and then I heard a cracking nose. Kept hearing a cracking noise,” Petrillo said,

What she and others felt was a partial collapse in the basement, Officials believe the heavy rain is to blame an the ground right now is saturated like a sponge. They say the problem was likely slowly unfolding, but Sunday was the breaking point.

“The foundation underneath the building is collapsed into the basement, which is now dragging the first floor into the basement and landed on nine boilers that were affecting other buildings,” said Hawthorne Fire Chief Joe Speranza.

vacate orders were placed for Building E, where nine adults, three dogs, and three cats live.

“It’s very disturbing mentally. I was worried about my girls’ safety,” said Michael Barchetto.

The problem is not just isolated to Building E — the heavily damaged boilers in the basement service other apartments in the complex. Three additional buildings do not have heat and gas.

People were given a brief window to go and grab what they could. Engineers will be determining next steps.

Building partially collapses in the Bronx

NEW YORK — Emergency responders were on the scene of a partial building collapse in the Bronx on Monday evening.

The collapse happened around 3:30 p.m. at a seven-story apartment building on West Burnside Avenue and Phelan Place in Morris Heights. The first floor of the building houses businesses. The rest of the building is residential.

The building was evacuated. The stability of the building remains in question.

Stunning video captured people running for their lives as the building collapsed just feet away.

FDNY members were on the scene 1 minute, 36 seconds after the call came in, OEM Commissioner Zach Iscol said.

“All of our specialized training and resources that we have for an incident like this have gone to work. We have our drone up, surveying the area, seeing if we can find additional information about potential patients and areas of potential instability. We have our K9 unit here, helping us search for potential victims. And we have all of our specially trained firefighters, tactical units, collapse units, and our EMTs and rescue medics who are trained specifically to treat someone in a collapse,” FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said.

The FDNY gave the address as 1915 Billingsley Terrace. The portion of the building which collapsed, however, is located on West Burnside Avenue, and the address was initially given as 172 West Burnside Ave.

There are several open violations at the building, CBS New York’s Tim McNicholas reported.

A witness described to CBS New York’s Alice Gainer what he saw and heard as the corner of the building came down.

The man works in a bodega across the street from the collapse site.

He said in the three months he’s worked at that location, the building has been under construction.

“We heard something, like, some people screaming across the street. So we go out to see what’s going on. We see this construction stuff start cracking. There was two guys doing some construction up there. We see, like, big rocks start falling down. And then the whole building just fell down in, like, a second,” he said.

    Intense search of area

The FDNY said there have been no reports of injuries thus far, but it is continuing to search the area. The FDNY is using drones and dogs to search the area.

“We will presume, with an occupied building, that there could be someone there until we eliminate that possibility,” Kavanagh told CBS New York’s Maurice DuBois and Kristine Johnson. “We are doing everything in our power to make sure we can find them if they’re there, or to eliminate the possibility.”

FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh on Bronx building collapse

    03:55

“Given that this is an active building, a building with commercial space and residential space, we’re going to presume that their could be someone there, and we’re going to operate like there is,” Kavanagh said.

What caused the partial building collapse?

Kavanagh said there was no immediate word on what caused the collapse, but that will be part of the investigation.

All utilities have been shut off at the building.

The FDNY, NYPD and Department of Buildings were among the emergency responders at the scene. The Red Cross was assisting residents.

Metro-North Hudson Line service was suspended in both directions between Grand Central and Spuyten Duyvil because of the collapse.

    What happens next?

The majority of the apartment building is still standing. The corner of the building collapsed, all the way from the roof down to the street. Several rooms within the building are now exposed to the street.

Personal items, such as a hanging shoe organizer loaded with shoes, could be seen from the street below. A bed appeared to be crushed in one of the crushed rooms. A small jacket could be seen hanging on the wall of one of the rooms.

The base of the building has a sidewalk shed on it. The shed is now partially surrounded by an extensive pile of rubble.

Residents of the building were being directed to a service center at P.S. 390, which is nearby. The MTA also brought in four buses to keep residents warm.

“Any residents that need a place tonight, please go to P.S. 390. We will have teams there to help find you a place to stay for the duration of this event,” Iscol said.

There was no immediate word of the number of people who are displaced as a result of the collapse.

  • Church roof collapses in Mexico, Catholic officials say at least 1 dead

Church roof collapses in Mexico, Catholic officials say at least 1 dead

The roof of a church collapsed in northern Mexico during a Mass on Sunday, killing an undetermined number of people among approximately 30 parishioners believed trapped in the rubble, authorities said.

Rescuers probed beneath the fallen roof into the night, and officials brought in dogs to help search for possible survivors.

The Tamaulipas state police said that about 100 people were in the church at the time of the collapse and that about 30 were thought to have been trapped.

Civil officials gave no information on any casualties. But the Mexican Council of Bishops issued a statement early in the evening saying that “we join in prayer at the tragic loss of life and those injured,” though it did not say how many had died.

Bishop José Armando Alvarez of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tampico said the roof caved in while parishioners were receiving communion at the Santa Cruz church in the Gulf coast city of Ciudad Madero, next to the port city of Tampico.

“From underneath the rubble, thanks to Divine Providence and the work of the rescue teams, people have been pulled out alive!” Alvarez’s diocese wrote in a statement posted on it social media accounts. “Let’s keep praying!”

He also called on anyone who had wood to donate to bring it to the church, apparently to shore up the roof while rescue teams crawled inside.

Tamaulipas state police said units of the National Guard, the state police and state civil defense office and the Red Cross were at the scene seeking to rescue victims.

Photos published by local media showed what appeared to be a concrete and brick structure, with parts of the roof fallen almost to the ground. Security camera footage from about a block away showed the unusual, gabled roof simply collapsed downward.

Walls did not appear to have been blown outward, nor was there any indication of an explosion, or anything other than simple structural failure.

The roof appeared to be made of relatively thin poured concrete, and photos distributed by state authorities showed the roof slab resting on the top of pews in some parts of the church. That left open the possibility there were air spaces for any survivors.

“At this time, the necessary work is being performed to extract the people who are still under the ruble,” Alvarez said in a taped message. “Today we are living through a very difficult moment.”

Video distributed by the state civil defense office showed the outer edges of the roof proppws up up by short wooden blocks.

It also showed initial efforts to lift off parts of the collapsed roof closer to the ground, in the center of the church, with a crane. But the office said the efforts to lift roof sections were abandoned because of the danger that a chunk of the now-crumbling slab might fall back and endanger any survivors.

The video described how officials were reverting to manual rescue efforts, apparently sending rescuers under the slab with wood props or hydraulic jacks to reach those trapped underneath the slab. Specially trained dogs also were being sent into the rubble to detect survivors.

Building collapses are common in Mexico during earthquakes, but the National Seismological Service did not report any seismic activity strong enough to cause such damage at the time of the collapse. Nor was there any immediate indication of an explosion.

Ciudad Madero is about 310 miles (500 kilometers) south of Brownsville, Texas. Tamaulipas is known for drug cartel violence, but Ciudad Madero is in the southern part of the state near neighboring Veracruz state and has been less touched by the violence.

  • Officials Now Say There May Be 2 People In Partially Collapsed Iowa Building

Officials Now Say There May Be 2 People In Partially Collapsed Iowa Building

A day after stating there were no known people trapped in a partially collapsed apartment building in the eastern Iowa town of Davenport, officials said Tuesday there were five people unaccounted for, two of whom they believe are still in the building.

The situation puts city officials in a tight spot, forcing them to choose between sending rescue crews into a six-story apartment building could come crashing down at any moment or demolishing the building knowing it’s possible there are survivors inside.

Following the rescue of eight people after the building partially collapsed Sunday, officials were set to demolish the building Tuesday morning. But a ninth survivor, 52-year-old Lisa Brooks, managed to call for help once her phone started working again, and rescue crews retrieved her.

A worker walks by the six-story Davenport, Iowa, apartment building after it collapsed.

“The immediate question I know people are asking is, how did she get there? And why wasn’t she found earlier? I am totally transparent with you ― I do not know, we do not know, but understand, please, that I and the city is committed to finding out why,” Davenport Mayor Mike Matson said at a Tuesday news conference.

Officials added that in evaluating the building for survivors, they used specially trained service animals, drones and thermal imaging to determine that no viable signs of life were in the building before Brooks was found.

“We’re very sympathetic to the possibility that there’s two people … ,” Davenport Fire Marshal Jim Morris said before pausing to wipe tears from his eyes “… that there’s two people still left inside.”

“We need to evaluate what we see between the structural engineer, our technical rescue teams and formulate the best possible way to strategically go in there,” he continued.

Some present at the news conference shouted over Morris, calling for rescue efforts to continue. Others have gathered outside the damaged building holding signs reading: “Find them first” and “Demo = murder.”

Ryan Hitchcock is among those unaccounted for. His cousin, Amy Anderson, spoke at Tuesday’s news conference in support of demolishing the building.

“Ryan wouldn’t want anyone else to put their lives at risk to unfortunately [find] somebody who probably has not survived,” Anderson said. “I don’t discount that he could be trapped under there miraculously. We’ve seen some miraculous things, and our God is good, but we don’t want to see any more families lose their lives or anybody else be injured.”

She added that she was “mortified” by the protests calling for the search to continue.

“I plead with our community just to let the city do their job right now. It is an absolute no-win situation, but this is the best plan of attack,” she said.

Officials have not yet determined what caused the building’s partial collapse.
