    888 Holdings clocks 165% H1 2023 revenue surge, but reports $42 million after-tax loss | Yogonet International

    [ad_1]

British bookmaker 888 Holdings has reported a 165% growth in revenue for the first half of 2023, amounting to £882 million ($1.12 billion) and Adjusted EBITDA surged by an impressive 211%, reaching £155.6 million (about $198 million). Despite its impressive revenue growth, the group reported an after-tax loss of £33 million ($41.9 million) for the period compared to profit-after-tax of £12 million (approximately $15 million) in H1-22.

Although there was a growth of 6% in retail revenue, this increase was overshadowed by an 11% reduction in online revenue. The losses were attributed to elevated interest costs, along with amortization and specific one-time expenses associated with the acquisition of William Hill.

The pro forma group revenue experienced a 7% decrease, primarily influenced by regulatory changes in dotcom markets, as well as a more targeted marketing strategy and market orientation. The company said it took proactive measures to adjust its business composition, resulting in a substantial 95% of Q2 2023 revenue originating from markets subject to local regulations and taxation. Meanwhile, pro forma group Adjusted EBITDA increased by 9%, and pro forma Adjusted EBITDA margin expanded by 2.6 percentage points to reach 17.7%. This growth was driven by the successful execution of synergies and a targeted strategy, the company said.

“We made very strong progress with the execution of our integration plan and we now expect to realise the full £150 million of synergies in 2024, a year earlier than the original plan. Our strong cash discipline and higher profits also enabled a 0.5x reduction in our leverage. We have successfully delivered against our focused market strategy, changing the mix of our revenue and creating a more profitable and sustainable platform for future growth,” Lord Mendelsohn, Executive Chair of 888, said.

The company expedited the realization of synergies, achieving £66 million in cash synergies during the first half of 2023.

As per the company, the anticipated Adjusted EBITDA for the fiscal year 2023 is expected to show substantial year-on-year growth on a pro forma basis. The projected Adjusted EBITDA margin for the full year is set to be at least 20%, a notable increase from 16.8% in 2022. Additionally, the year-end leverage is projected to be slightly below 5x.

In July, the company announced the appointment of Per Widerström as its new CEO. Widerström will assume the role from 16 October, 2023 and Mendelsohn will return to the role of non-executive Chair.  Widerström has over 17 years of experience in the online gaming industry and is the former CEO of Europe-focused Fortuna Entertainment Group.

“Over the coming weeks, I will be working closely with Per to ensure a smooth handover and I am highly confident in his ability to lead the team to realize the full potential of this business. The strategic progress made during the year to date has created a fundamentally stronger business with higher profit margins and we remain on track to deliver against expectations for the full year,” Mendelsohn said.

  • Atlantic City casino smoking ban advocates praise Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods for smoke-free policies | Yogonet International

Atlantic City casino smoking ban advocates praise Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods for smoke-free policies | Yogonet International

    [ad_1]

Casino Employees Against Smoking’s Effects (CEASE), a group based in Atlantic City, N.J. aiming to permanently ban smoking in casinos, has praised Connecticut casinos Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino for their smoke-free policies, which have remained in place since the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to an article and subsequent statements made by the top executives of the southeastern Connecticut casinos, CEASE issued a statement praising their smoke-free policies on Tuesday. The casinos’ management had dismissed an industry analyst’s suggestion that their policies had contributed to a slight decrease in slot-machine revenues during the 2023 fiscal year that concluded on June 30.

Spectrum Gaming Group had raised the question of whether the casinos’ decisions to remain smoke-free after the pandemic reopenings had influenced casino players who smoke to try digital gaming, which was legalized in Connecticut in October 2021.

During the 12-month period that ended in June, the combined slot win of the casinos, the wagers retained after prize payouts, amounted to $848 million, a 1.5% reduction from the $861 million retained in the previous 12 months. Meanwhile, gross gaming revenue from online gaming nearly doubled in the same period.

Jeff Hamilton, President and General Manager of Mohegan Sun, and Jason Guyot, President and CEO of Foxwoods, both expressed skepticism regarding the notion that the continuation of smoking bans had negatively impacted their brick-and-mortar casino businesses.

Jeff Hamilton, President and General Manager of Mohegan Sun

Both casinos, like many others across the country, had implemented smoking bans when they reopened after temporary closures due to the pandemic. CEASE’s statement voiced support for Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods’ decision to maintain the polcy, arguing that the traditional understanding of smoking in casinos is undergoing a significant shift.

“We’ve seen report after report bought and paid for by some in the gaming industry that have no basis in fact ― and this recent claim about casinos in Connecticut is now being shot down by Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods,” CEASE said in its statement.

“We applaud these two casinos for making the decision many months ago to protect employees and guests from dangerous secondhand smoke. The old conventional wisdom about smoking in casinos no longer applies, and we’re seeing example after example of this new reality playing out across the country.”

The group further highlighted the proposed change in Atlantic City that aims to close the casino smoking loophole, which CEASE says aligns with a broader trend toward healthier and smoke-free environments in casinos.

In New Jersey, a state law enacted in 2006 prohibited smoking in all workplaces except casinos. Although temporarily banned during the pandemic-induced shutdowns, smoking was reinstated on July 4, 2021, with restrictions allowing smoking on 25% of each casino’s gaming floor.

The CEASE group, boasting a membership that includes thousands of casino dealers and frontline gaming workers, also has active chapters in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Kansas, and Virginia.

CEASE’s advocacy for extending workplace bans to casinos has gained momentum in recent legislative sessions, and the group is expected to continue its lobbying efforts in the upcoming fall session.

The Malta Gaming Authority announced on Thursday that it has canceled the authorization awarded to EGMIT Elite Limited, which runs the Elite24bet brand, based on specific breaches of the Gaming Compliance and Enforcement Regulations.

According to MGA, the operator breached specific terms of Regulation 9 of the Gaming Licence Fees Regulations, including failure to comply with an order issued by the authority, as well as failing to adhere to certain regulations and laws.

The regulator further pointed out breaches related to a failure to discharge financial commitments for its operations; failure to meet commitments to players promptly; and failure to pay fees promptly

“The Authority, in its sole discretion, has determined that there is material and sufficient reason for suspending the authorization,” said the regulator. “One of the grounds for suspension envisaged in regulation 9 arises and the Authority, in its sole discretion, determines that cancellation of the authorization is the most appropriate measure.”

  • SPiCE Sri Lanka: Regulatory bill sparks international interest in country’s gambling industry | Yogonet International

SPiCE Sri Lanka: Regulatory bill sparks international interest in country’s gambling industry | Yogonet International

    [ad_1]

In a major move for the local sector, Sri Lanka’s gambling industry is gearing up for massive transformation as the government greenlights a long-awaited bill to establish a regulatory authority for lawful gambling. The decision has sent shockwaves across the region, sparking interest from international gaming firms eyeing the island nation’s promising market.

Industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and gaming industry enthusiasts gathered at the SPiCE Sri Lanka conference in Colombo earlier this month, brought together by the country’s potential growth prospects and eager to explore the untapped opportunities in this new landscape.

Jade Entertainment and Gaming Founder and CEO Joe Pisano; PM International’s Chief Commercial Officer Dmitry Belianin; and Pari Consultants’ Consultant Gaming Parimalam Suppiah shared their insights and experiences during a panel conversation held within the framework of the conference.

Suppiah expressed his strong interest in the Sri Lankan market, echoed by the other speakers: “We have strong interest now to come to this market. We are actually from Central Asia. We are also looking at sports betting, and many opportunities.”

The pivotal moment that has brought together gaming enthusiasts and industry professionals alike is the cabinet’s approval to draft a bill that will establish a regulatory authority for lawful gambling in Sri Lanka. This regulatory body will be responsible not only for governing gambling operations but also for addressing responsible gambling practices.

As Pisano pointed out: “In any jurisdiction, one of the most important things is to bring in industry professionals to help draft that bill. Hopefully, the government here will reach out to industry leaders to bring in the investment into the country.”

The enactment of a robust regulatory framework is crucial in attracting international gaming companies to invest in Sri Lanka. With initiatives like the Port City development project, Sri Lanka is poised to become an attractive destination for global operators, noted the experts. Pisano added, “There is a 15-hectare lot [in Port City] and let’s say, to attract a Nevada-based operator, you need to have those regulations in place.”

Besides creating favorable business conditions, industry leaders stressed the importance of establishing a gambling ads framework to strike the right balance between regulation and growth. Belianin added: “I think bringing the proper advertising regulations will allow the industry to grow, allow the operators to invest more money into the sports and into marketing.”

As the industry gears up for a potential influx of gaming operators, concerns were raised about the competition from gray market operators who have long targeted Sri Lankan players unchecked. However, it was unanimously agreed that proper regulations would provide a level playing field for both new entrants and existing operators.

Pisano remarked, “With regulation in place, moving from gray would be step one for gray market players. I see a big future in Sri Lanka.” The growth potential of Sri Lanka’s gaming industry is nothing short of promising, especially with its high smartphone and internet penetration rates, Suppiah added.

Suppiah highlighted: “The development opportunities in the country right now are massive due to the internet penetration, the passion for sports and also the passion for games. The percentage of internet penetration in the country is one of the highest in the region as well.”
