Although this would be a great title for a sequel to a 1996 Western starring Clint Eastwood, it in fact describes three different groups of animals that can be seen on Safari in Africa. One would be surprised at the conversations that flow during game drives between myself, tracker Trevor and our guests. We often have the privilege of meeting and getting to know people from all over the world, who we didn’t know from a bar of soap before, as we spend countless hours out in the bush on safari. Whilst on a recent game drive we all got chatting about these three groupings of animals, and one more…
The Xinkhova Female walks past a large breeding herd of elephants in an open clearing. The biggest and the smallest members of the infamous big five.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with these groupings, here is a quick summary:
Contrary to what many people believe, these are not the biggest five African mammals. Many years ago when people mostly hunted animals instead of viewing them (either for subsistence or recreational purposes), these five animals were grouped together as the most dangerous to hunt. In no particular order, the Elephant, Rhino, African buffalo, Leopard and Lion make up the big 5.
The Big Five!
The ‘Little’ Five:
This is a group of smaller animals that can be seen on safari, all of which bear the names of each of the above-mentioned big five animals. They are the Elephant Shrew, Rhino beetle, Red-billed buffalo Weaver, Leopard tortoise and Antlion.
The Little Five!
The ‘Ugly’ Five:
In my opinion, no animal is ‘ugly’, except maybe a naked mole rat… but this is a group of not-so-good-looking animals that can be seen whilst on Safari. Even though they may not have the most attractive features, they form very important roles in the ecosystem. Again, in no particular order, they are the Warthog, the Wildebeest, the Spotted Hyena, Vultures and the Marabou Stork.
The Ugly Five!
The ‘Fierce’ Five
As I mentioned earlier, conversations tend to flow in all different directions whilst on a game drive and this particular conversation leant towards a new grouping of animals, the ‘fierce’ five, for animals that punch above their weight (physically and literally). Here are the finalists, along with a brief reasoning as to why we decided to include them:
The Honey Badger:
This was a no-brainer and was the first animal that came to mind when compiling the list. Known for their ferocious nature and cunning behaviour, honey badgers are not to be messed with! Even the most fearsome predators such as lions and leopards have to think twice before engaging with a honey badger. They use their sharp teeth and claws to aggressively defend, and sometimes even attack these much larger predators, often going for the most sensitive of organs between the attackers back legs to scare them away… Click here for a quick throw back to one particular individual standing its ground against two rangers.
Revered by many, the honey badger is notorious for having a fiery personality.
Honey badgers are able to survive against the strongest of snake venoms, namely that of the black mamba. They have been witnessed being bitten, passing out for an hour or so, waking up (with a huge headache no doubt), shaking their head and continuing to go about their business.
The Fork-tailed drongo:
A fairly common bird of the African Savanna, the fork-tailed drongo was put forward as a nominee for its unrelenting attempts to chase away any potential threat. The most commonly seen example of this is when the drongo dive-bombs an eagle sitting at the top of a tree or in mid-flight. Even though there is a chance of the bird being caught, especially in the case of a Wahlberg’s eagle, a third of which’s diet consists of birds.
Fork-tailed drongos will often dive-bomb large eagles, such as this brown-snake eagle, in an attempt to force it elsewhere.
The spider-hunting wasp:
One of the more interesting ways in which an insect reproduces is by laying eggs inside another arthropod. That’s exactly what this species of wasp does. They house a powerful sting which paralyses an array of spider species, in this area the most common being the baboon spider which itself has a nasty bite!
A spider-hunting wasp drags its victim to a nearby burrow after paralysing it.
Upon stinging the victim, the female wasp will drag the spider to a burrow that is usually pre-prepared and lay an egg inside its abdomen. The larva will then hatch after roughly 10 days and feed on the spider (that is likely still alive, but just paralysed), and then wrap itself in a cocoon until conditions are conducive to emerge as an adult.
The Shrike family:
Shrikes are in general pretty badass. They are mostly insect-eating birds but are unique in that they often kill their prey by continuously slamming it onto thorns, spines or other sharp objects. Not only does this kill their prey, but they will impale their food onto these sharp objects for later feeding or, in the case of males, for impressing females.
I will always respect the tenacity of magpie shrikes after witnessing an individual impale a bushveld gerbil (small rodent) onto the spine of a vachellia tree. Quite a feat if you ask me!
Termites:
The fungus-growing termites that we are familiar with at Londolozi have been a hot topic of late as the reproductive alates have been emerging from mounds in an effort to create new colonies. It isn’t, however, these winged termites that are fierce, more so the caste of soldier termites that safeguards them as well as the rest of the colony.
The soldier termites are easily identifiable with much larger heads and mandibles that can inflict a painful bite, if threatened.
The termites’ main threat is other insects. More specifically ants, and these soldier termites will be called to the task to defend their colony against an invasion of thousands of ants. Their main form of defence is to either secrete a sticky substance, and in doing so trap various intruders, or inflict a painful bite with their enlarged mandibles.
It’s a fairly subjective topic and whilst writing this I had input from various different people who all had their own opinions on which species should be included in this elite grouping. Feel free to add your comments below on any mammals, birds, insects or other animals you feel should be given more publicity for punching above their weight!
I recently visited the Salwa area in the hope I may be able to get better photographs of Grey Francolin. This is a scarce breeding resident in Saudi Arabia with the first known record at Safwa on 18 November 1991 since when records were reported locally from Dhahran to Jubail in coastal areas with one in coastal sand dunes at Jubail from at least 12 September to 16 October 2000 and another at Sabkha al-Fasl 19 January 2004. Range expansion was mapped and thought likely to occur to the north of Jubail and east of Dhahran by Jennings 2010, but records actually declined sharply as it apparently failed to establish a self-sustaining population with the only record known since 2004, a sighting 12 March 2019 just outside Berri Gas Plant, Jubail. A thriving population was found in spring 2021 near Salwa, close to the Qatar border and have been seen again on each of my visits to the area. The birds are very timid and generally stay under, or in, the trees where they are occasionally flushed or seen in flight and call loudly. This time Phil noticed a bird in a set of allotments at relatively close range allowing the below photos to be taken. The records from the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia were probably introduced, but possibly occurred as an overspill from birds introduced and established in Bahrain in 1981, where it is now common. The subspecies isFrancolinus pondicerianus mecranensis known as Baluchistan Grey Francolin that occurs in arid south-eastern Iran and southern Pakistan. They are resident from eastern Arabia and Iran, throughout India to Sri Lanka where they occur near sea level in areas with trees, bushes and shrubs, including plantations, large parks, cultivated areas, or dry open woodland.

Things To Consider Before Buying The Best Dog Beds for Your Great Pyrenees
All the products we reviewed are great choices, but to find the perfect one, you’ll want to consider these things:
1. Size
The size often has the biggest impact on how comfortable your Great Pyrenees is. Your pet should be able to lie down on the bed with its limbs fully extended.
For small dogs, it’s usually okay to use a larger breed bed as long as they can jump into it without any problem, but small beds aren’t suitable for large dogs.
2. Cushioning And Support
A Great Pyrenees’ comfort level is generally determined by its size, mobility, and overall health. Yet, the amount of cushioning in their bed also plays a role.
A small puppy won’t require as much cushion as a large, arthritic Great Pyrenees. Typically, less mobile dogs need thicker, sturdier foam to support their bodies comfortably.
3. Insulation Level
Depending on your climate and your dog’s breed, the insulation level of your pet’s bed can be crucial. It shouldn’t make your Great Pyrenees feel too hot or too cold.
It’s important to provide warmth to a thin and small breed with no undercoat in cold northern climates. However, in a tropical climate, it is crucial to provide a cooling bed to fluffy breeds.
4. Durability And Design
Various materials can be used to make dog beds, ranging from soft polyester to durable and hard-wearing fabrics. If your Great Pyrenees likes to tear apart stuffed toys, a fluffy fleece bed won’t last very long, so you should spend your money on something sturdier.

Things To Consider Before Buying The Best Dog Beds for Your Havanese
All the products we reviewed are great choices, but to find the perfect one, you’ll want to consider these things:
1. Size
The size often has the biggest impact on how comfortable your Havanese is. Your pet should be able to lie down on the bed with its limbs fully extended.
For small dogs, it’s usually okay to use a larger breed bed as long as they can jump into it without any problem, but small beds aren’t suitable for large dogs.
2. Cushioning And Support
A Havanese’s comfort level is generally determined by its size, mobility, and overall health. Yet, the amount of cushioning in their bed also plays a role.
A small puppy won’t require as much cushion as a large, arthritic Havanese. Typically, less mobile dogs need thicker, sturdier foam to support their bodies comfortably.
3. Insulation Level
Depending on your climate and your dog’s breed, the insulation level of your pet’s bed can be crucial. It shouldn’t make your Havanese feel too hot or too cold.
If your Havanese likes to tear apart stuffed toys, a fluffy fleece bed won’t last very long, so you should spend your money on something sturdier.

Things To Consider Before Buying The Best Dog Beds for Your Jack Russell
All the products we reviewed are great choices, but to find the perfect one, you’ll want to consider these things:
1. Size
The size often has the biggest impact on how comfortable your Jack Russell is. Your pet should be able to lie down on the bed with its limbs fully extended.
For small dogs, it’s usually okay to use a larger breed bed as long as they can jump into it without any problem, but small beds aren’t suitable for large dogs.
2. Cushioning And Support
A Jack Russell‘s comfort level is generally determined by its size, mobility, and overall health. Yet, the amount of cushioning in their bed also plays a role.
A small puppy won’t require as much cushion as a large, arthritic Jack Russell. Typically, less mobile dogs need thicker, sturdier foam to support their bodies comfortably.
3. Insulation Level
Depending on your climate and your dog’s breed, the insulation level of your pet’s bed can be crucial. It shouldn’t make your Jack Russell feel too hot or too cold.
If your Jack Russell likes to tear apart stuffed toys, a fluffy fleece bed won’t last very long, so you should spend your money on something sturdier.

We are SO excited to share great news with you: we have adopted a new puppy!
Since we lost Tiki in November, we’ve been searching for just the right companion for Barli. He’s very gentle but Barli is a fearful dog and easily intimidated by other dogs…so we knew we had to find just the right match.
We’d originally planned to adopt an older dog or at least an older puppy. After an unsuccessful foster-to-adopt attempt, we saw that Barli needed a companion that would come in smaller than him (even if the new dog grows much larger than Barli) and, at least in the initial weeks, would be submissive to Barli so he doesn’t feel nervous.
The answer: a little puppy.
In Texas with our temperate winters, puppies are certainly born year around–but the Christmas rush made finding a young puppy more difficult than I anticipated. We searched Petfinder for shelters from Waco to Corpus Christi.
Then Last Friday I saw this listing on the Texas Humane Heroes website:
Honestly, I’d been avoiding the Texas Humane Heroes listings a bit–because nearly 15 years ago that’s where we adopted Tiki. I thought it just might be too depressing to revisit the shelter and remember that wonderful day.
But then I decided that maybe it wouldn’t hurt to just swing by and have a look.
And I fell in love.
“Scruffs” was part of a litter of seven puppies that had been arrived in the Killeen shelter in early December at 3-4 weeks old then, two weeks later, been sent to the Leander shelter. The shelter did not have the mother, so she’s a mystery.
I observed the litter to see which one was a calmer puppy yet still outgoing–and decided to visit with the seven-pound blonde girl–who I guess reminded me of the blonde girl we adopted over 14 years ago just a few yards away:
I spent about an hour playing with her and Facetiming John–and then the decision was made!
Soon she was on her way home! John brought Barli out of the yard on leash to meet his new little sister:
Barli’s first reaction was a bit of fear–marked by sudden drooling. After a day of getting to know her through the ex-pen, though, Barli soon warmed up and now they’re doing zoomies around and around the yard. Barli was so ecstatic to see his new little sister returning home from her first vet visit yesterday–yep, she’s here to stay, Barli!
It’s anyone’s guess what her breed mix is; her hair is super soft although it’s hard to know how that will change as she grows. Weighing seven pounds at 8 weeks old, the shelter guessed she’d be a medium-sized dog, maybe somewhere in the 40-50 pound range.
Her new name is Isla, a fun reminder of our years writing guidebooks to the islands–and to the many visits we hope to make with her and Barli to Mustang Island on the Texas coast.
She’s still got about seven weeks to go before her immunity kicks in and she can walk our trails (which are shared with many coyotes and foxes, so there’s a real danger before she finishes her shot series) but I’ll be socializing her with a lot of visits to dog-friendly stores in the coming weeks.
I’m so happy that I visited Texas Humane Heroes last Friday. It did bring back a lot of memories of Tiki’s adoption day–and there’s really no better way to honor her memory than to bring a new dog into our hearts. Isla’s already brought so much joy into our lives and into Barli’s.
Mountain lions are getting bolder and hungrier, as demonstrated by some unusual behavior in recent months. The apex predators are known for hunting and eating meat, but they are frequently in the news of late for their forays into populated areas in search of an easy meal. This should come as a surprise to no one as humans continue to encroach on their habitats.

Rocky Mountain High
According to The Colorado Sun, mountain lions have killed 15 dogs in 30 days in or near the town of Nederland, 17 miles from Boulder, Colorado. Additional information supplied reports that cougars attacked 23 canines between April 4 and December 9, 2022. Locals estimate that between one and five cougars are responsible for the recent spate of deaths, but officials have been unable to identify any culprits specifically linked to the matter.
“It’s gotten sort of out of hand and it needs to be addressed,” Nederland resident Peter James told the Denver Post. “It kind of feels like, is the community responsible for maintaining this kind of safety?”

Stalked By a Puma
Frequently referred to as pumas or cougars, mountain lions have been known to stalk hikers but seldom are they accused of lying in wait outside of residences for a quick snack. That appears to be changing.
The Sun reported that a local by the name of Pam Rose texted a Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) official on the evening of December 9 to say that she’d started to fear for her 11-year-old daughter’s wellbeing due to two mountain lions that seemed to be “casing her home” that day.
She noted that since early November, she’s been dealing with the predators, which she believed had “actively stalking” her mini horse and daughter’s pony. This was backed by her tenant, Sarah Bennett, who had also encountered the animals on early-morning runs with her dog, Bagel.
The pumas had been lurking in the distance for weeks, as Rose had seen them watching the horses she boards from a nearby hillside situated on her land in the Roosevelt National Forest. Between reports of cougars attacking dogs in her neighborhood and their sudden interest in her livestock, it had put her nervous system into “overdrive,” as she put it.
The night she alerted CPW was a tipping point for her. A mountain lion had planted itself outside of Bennett’s garden-level door, seemingly biding its time until she brought Bagel out for a potty break. Bennett caught sight of it not 25 feet away and hurried Bagel back inside. “I felt like it knew our patterns,” Rose nervously admitted. “It knew Bagel lived there, and it was waiting to attack,” she continued.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife
While locals are understandably up in arms about the situation, there’s not much you can do when you live in a wild animal’s backyard but learn to adapt or go on a killing spree of your own. CPW has outlined some ideas about ways to try to peacefully coexist with the big cats, but it’s likely of little comfort to dog owners in the area — especially those that have lost a beloved pet.

There’s no better time to reassess your pet’s overall health and
wellness than the start of a new year. We’ve put together a list of our best
pet parent tips for 2023 to help make sure you’re starting your pet’s year off
right.
Schedule their annual
veterinary appointment
Pets are notoriously good at hiding signs of illness, so it’s
not uncommon for pet parents to be unaware something is wrong until it becomes
serious. This is why our best pet parent tip for 2023 is to schedule an annual
vet appointment at the start of each year.
At these annual appointments, your veterinarian will:
Perform a physical examination
Update any vaccinations
Conduct annual blood work or other tests
Completing these on an annual basis will give your vet a good
understanding of your pet’s baseline health, which will make it easier to see
when something changes. After the age of seven, your vet will likely recommend
coming in for these appointments every six months so they can more closely
monitor changes as your pet enters its senior years.
Refresh your pet’s diet
If one of your pet parent goals for 2023 is to improve your
pet’s diet, consider switching to fresh food. The food your pet eats plays a
huge role in their health and there’s no better option than fresh. That’s
because unlike kibble, which uses powdered meat, artificial colors, and
preservatives, fresh pet food – like Freshpet – uses ingredients that are much
closer to their natural state. By making the switch to Freshpet, your pet will
benefit from recipes that are:
Made from 100% natural farm-raised proteins,
fiber-packed garden veggies, and antioxidant-rich fruits
Gently steamed at lower temperatures to retain
nutrients
Tailored to life stage, size, and special
dietary requirements
For a full overview of the different Freshpet recipes, take a look at our product page for dogs and cats.
Encourage them to drink
more water
Water is crucial to your pet’s overall health, helping to keep
their body functionally normally. Most notably, water plays a role in:
Regulating their body temperature
Digestion
Nutrient absorption
Expelling waste and toxins
Unfortunately, making sure that your pet gets enough water can
be an ongoing battle – especially for cat parents. The good news is that we
know a number of tricks you can try to pique your pet’s interest in drinking
water, including:
Adding a splash
of flavor: If your pet isn’t interested in plain water, liquids such as
carrot juice and sodium-free chicken broth or pieces of fruit are quick – and
pet safe – ways to add a splash of flavor.
Use a water
fountain: Cats, in particular, prefer to drink running water, so swapping
their bowl for a water fountain that offers free-flowing water is enough to
convince them to increase their water intake.
Offer it in ice form: Offering icy treats is another fun way to encourage them to “drink” – especially during the summer. Products like this Pupsicle maker make it easy for you to make icy treats at home so you always have them on hand.
For more reasons why you should be watching your pet’s water intake, take a look at this blog written by our Freshpet vet, Dr. Aziza.
Reassess their exercise
routine
Dogs benefit greatly from having a regular exercise routine.
Dogs that have the opportunity to exercise daily benefit from:
Lower blood pressure
Stronger muscles and bones
Decreased stressed
Less destructive behaviors
We know that finding the time to set an exercise schedule for
your pet can feel daunting, especially for pet parents with busy schedules. This
is why it’s a great idea to find a way for them to join activities you already
do, such as running, hiking, or even long-distance walks.
But physical activity isn’t the only form of exercise that your
pet should engage in – keeping their mind active is just as important! Keeping
your pet’s mind busy can help curb feelings of boredom, stress, and anxiety –
all of which can lead to destructive behaviors.
Use puzzle
feeders: Puzzle feeders keep pets both mentally and physically engaged as
they work out how to get to their food. They come in several different formats,
such as bricks, balls, and snuffle mats, so you can see which your pet enjoys
most.
Find toys they can play with independently: Toys that keep their mind busy are especially useful when your pet has to spend time alone. Similar to puzzle feeders, toys by brands such as Kong and Doc & Phoebe allow you to hide treats inside them and your pet will have to work out how to get them.
Improve their oral
health
Over 80% of pets have some stage have dental disease, which, if
left untreated, can contribute to oral pain, bad breath, and even unintended
weight loss. So if you really want to make sure you’re starting your pet’s year
off right, look for ways to improve their oral health.
Get the necessary supplies: There are many different types of toothbrushes, including those with multiple bristle heads, angled brushes, and even those that fit on your fingertips – choose the one that you’re most comfortable using. For toothpaste, look for products that are designed specifically for pets as they’re made with pet-safe ingredients and come in tasty flavors like beef and poultry.
Stick to a brushing schedule: In a perfect world, your pet’s teeth would be brushed twice a day. However, we know this is a hard ask so even twice a week is a great start! If this is the first time you’re brushing your pet’s teeth, take a look at our guide for brushing your pet’s teeth at home
Schedule dental
check-ups: Just because your dog’s teeth appear normal doesn’t necessarily
mean that they are healthy – even if the visible part of the tooth is healthy
it doesn’t mean the same can be said about the roots. Your vet will be able to
perform dental radiographs to get a full picture of your pet’s oral health.
We hope that our list of best pet parent tips for 2023 helps you
make sure you’re starting your pet’s year off right!
You love your puppy. Spending time with him is so much fun. But you must work outside the home. After all, you want to provide the best life you can for him and the cost of food, treats, vet bills, training and grooming can add up. So, you wonder: How long can your puppy be left alone?
It comes down to his age, socialization, training and exercise needs
Number of hours a puppy can be left alone for bathroom needs
A puppy needs to potty often and can hold his bladder only so long. So when determining how long your precious puppy can be left alone, take into consideration his need to go to the bathroom. Puppies can “hold it” for the following periods of time:
Under 10 weeks old, a puppy can hold it for one hour
10 to 12 weeks old, a puppy can hold it for two hours
3 months old, a puppy can hold it for three hours
4 months old, a puppy can hold it for four hours
5 months old, a puppy can hold it for five hours
6 months old, a puppy can hold it for six hours
Over 6 months old, a puppy can hold it for six to eight hours
This chart is a guideline. You never want your puppy to be uncomfortable or have an avoidable accident. My advice: Err on the side of caution and arrange for someone to take your puppy — even at 5 months old — out to potty every 4 hours. And before you leave the house, make sure that he’s gone out.
How long a puppy can be left alone socialization wise
In addition to his bathroom needs, your puppy still requires time to bond with you. Feed him, play with him, train him and socialize him; he will understand that great things happen when you’re around.
Puppies under 14 weeks old are in a sensitive, crucial socialization period. They benefit from a lot of appropriate exposure to what they’ll face in everyday life. This includes people, animals, noises, smells and sights. Being isolated can damage a puppy’s development.
Puppy socialization guidelines
Puppies should be slowly exposed to different stimuli every day and throughout the day. After your puppy has had a sufficient number of vaccines, take him on walks, visits with friends and to dog-friendly stores.
Dogs are social creatures. And being alone too long can lead to behavior problems because a puppy can become distressed.
Get help instead of leaving a puppy alone for 8 hours
If you can’t meet the above potty schedule, enlist the help of others, such as a reliable friend or family member to potty your pup as well as play with, feed and exercise him. Or hire a reliable pet sitter or dog walker to perform these tasks. Puppies sleep most of the day — up to 20 hours. Of course, no one is a substitute for your care.
How to leave a puppy alone in a safe area
Puppies want to investigate the world. This can be very dangerous if the area isn’t puppy-proofed.
Train your puppy to be in an appropriately-sized crate. Alternatively, leave your puppy in an exercise pen, complete with a play area, a sleeping area with a bed and a potty pad. Or you can leave your pup in a safe room that’s been puppy-proofed.
When determining how long your puppy can be left alone, consider his age because he needs to potty on a regular schedule. But also take into account his need for socialization, training, exercise and companionship too. After all, dogs are social creatures. And you want to spend as much time as you can watching him bloom into the best version of himself.

Once you get beyond the “ick” factor, lab-grown meat may have profound ethical and environmental advantages. But will it be good for our dogs and cats (and us) and should it be used in pet food?
Lab-grown meat? It sounds like something out of a science fiction story, but it’s a concept being explored by a growing number of companies. This article takes a closer look at lab-grown meat and how it’s made – and more importantly, whether or not it should be used in pet foods.
How Is Lab-Grown Meat Made?
Also known as cultivated meat, clean meat, and cultured meat, it’s made primarily with muscle cells that (with one exception) have attached themselves to a framework known as “scaffolding.” Companies are also looking at ways to incorporate fat and connective tissue into the process, to make the result look, feel, and taste more like the meat that comes straight from an animal.
In the U.S., companies are concentrating on lab-grown beef for humans, and one is using rabbit tissue for dogs and mouse tissue for cats.
Fast fact: One company has included animal muscle genes in a strain of yeast to make it produce amino acids, and is marketing it as “animal protein”; however, this is a GMO process, and does not follow the procedures used for lab-grown meat.
Stem Cells Are Used
You can’t grow muscle from just any muscle cells. Mature muscle cells die if they are separated from a body. The only kind of muscle cell that will grow in a lab is a muscle stem cell, which forms new muscle cells in the body as well as in the lab setting. One stem cell can potentially create a trillion new cells. Mature muscle cells can get larger or smaller, but they can’t multiply to make new cells.
Stem cells can live in a petri dish, and will multiply for a very long time to make many single immature muscle cells that continue multiplying. Under the right conditions, those cells will change into mature elongated muscle cells that look like those in meat.
Originally, beef muscle stem cells were fed with fetal calf serum. Now, companies are growing cells using various combinations of nutrients to create an ideal formula that will let them grow and thrive without having to rely on other animal products. After enough cells have grown into a small lump, they are mixed with small tubes, called “scaffolding”, that will help change them from single round cells to the long muscle fibers seen in mature muscle. Scaffolding was originally made from gelatin, another animal product, but companies are increasingly using plant products instead. Scaffolding makes lab-grown meat feel more like meat when it is in your mouth, which is important for products made for humans.
Because dogs and cats aren’t as picky about meat texture as people are, developing cultured meat for animals can be done without the scaffolding, especially for use in pet treats. In fact, one treat company, which is working to create lab-grown meat for animals, skips the scaffolding.
Fast fact: The final growth process is done in a “bioreactor”—a large stainless steel structure similar to those used for brewing beer.
If lab-grown meat actually becomes the nutritional equivalent of pasture-grown meat, then the ethical and environmental advantages are enormous. If everything except the meat stem cells can come from plants, millions of animal lives would be saved. Additionally, if companies can be trusted to use healthy amounts of all necessary vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, in their natural forms and proper proportions, and forget about hormones to make cells grow bigger and faster, the end product could benefit people, dogs and cats, as well as the environment. We’re currently a long way from that, but time will tell if lab-grown meat will ever become an acceptable alternative to regular meat.
A family from Tennessee spent a memorable New Year’s Eve traveling for 11 hours to New Jersey where they finally reunited with their dog, Daisy.
According to the Ocean County Health Department, Daisy, a bloodhound, was overjoyed to see her family for the first time in two years.
OCHD and the Brick Police Department were able to locate Daisy’s family in Tennessee due to the Price family’s efforts to keep Daisy’s microchip on and updated.
The dog was one of over 180 animals discovered at a New Jersey residence last month after Brick Township Police were notified that the home’s residents were operating a puppy mill. Due to the unclean conditions, responding cops were compelled to bring in a hazmat team.
“The home was full of animal waste and the animals were living in horrible and inhumane conditions,” police said in a statement. “At least two animals removed were deceased – both were dogs. “
The Price family was reportedly shocked when Daisy was discovered all the way in New Jersey, according to OCHD. It is unknown when or how Daisy lost contact with her family, or how she got to New Jersey.

I have had very good luck with a base kibble for dachshunds from Royal Canine. I add frozen green beans. Breakfast includes tiki dog taste of the world, dinner includes a raw chicken neck. My girls are almost 13, slim, strong and high energy.

The best food is to make your own! Very lean ground beef browned with vegetables and chicken breasts baked or boiled with vegetables. You can add a little bit of brown or white rice. Knowing your pet is getting fresh healthy food without preservatives or additives is always best.

I love Blue Buffalo. My understanding from my vet is it’s not so much about the brand of dog food it’s about the ingredients. Apparently corn product is the worst thing for dogs to have. So I am just trying to stay away from any food that has corn in it. We lost her, she had a tumor and I didn’t know about the corn until she was about 8 years old. In that specific breed corn tends to progress tumors. You might research ingredients for your dog’s breed
I have been owned by seven dachshunds over the past 30 years and each of them was fed Hills Science Diet appropriate for their age. My dogs were healthy and had beautiful coats. No table scraps. Dry food unless it was a day or two after dental.
I made my puppy’s food. As she got older allergies to chicken/poultry (common allergy for puppers) started to rear it’s ugly head. Lean Ground beef, veggies, & a bit of a carb. I’d make big batches, serving sizes in bags, & freeze. It is trial & error at times, as well as their systems change as they age. She lived a long full happy life & passed May 1st ,2020. I scoured the internet constantly for her needs & it worked for us. Good luck! Best breed ever & will bring you hours of joy & laughter. Remember… They’re considered the clowns of the dog world for a reason.

I always trusted Purina. Just regular dry, and you can mix some canned in with it. My dogs all lived to be 15. And my Doxie Lilly lived to be 18. Great products been around for decades. None of my dogs liked duck. Ya know the ones that cost $25 for a small bag. Not necessary I say good ole PURINA is the way to go.

I am a breeder and use purina puppy chow mixed with purina pro plan puppy canned food. It seems most of my customers don’t keep their puppies on this food but switch to a more expensive food. I’m not really sure why this is. All of my adults thrive on purina.

Look at the ingredients. Stay away from foods that list by-products at the top of the list and stay away form foods that don’t say what source the by-products are from. I’ve seen several decent foods people recommend here, but you have to pick what’s best for your dog and your budget, there’s lots of good options. Personally I feed Taste of the wild. I love how the top ingredients are protein based meats and not by-products, it’s grain free and has probiotics in it, and my dogs look great on it. I also recommend zignature and Fromm to my customers. Zignature has a small bite that would be great for little dogs. Fromm is high end and the price tag is big but it’s so clean and the ingredients are so good that humans can eat too, but it probably wouldn’t taste very good to us.

20 Best Foods for a German Shepherd Puppy
I always used Science Diet hard and soft. Would switch the flavors out so didn’t get bored. My shepherd lived to be almost 16 years old with no health issues at all. She got the occasional plain piece of chicken, dog friendly veggies and fruits here and there. She just got old. Very important to use elevated dishes also.

Blue Buffalo is what my dog loves and seems to be good for her. Good luck. A vet will always say Iams or something like that but my dog wouldn’t eat it.
I used Hills Science Diet Large Breed Puppy for my dog. He is a show champion and a Hunt Test dog. It kept his coat great and he grew and filled out well. Now I have him on Purina Pro Plan Performance for the extra protein in the field and weather. Just make sure you don’t use a grain free diet. Dogs are developing heart disease using grain free. I am a Vet Tech and we see a lot of it because of the grain free fad going around.
Choosing dog food is extremely complex. As a police dog handler and trainer (retired) I’ve been to several schools on dog food and learned that the first rule is no canned food, it’s mostly water. Unless it’s a working dog careful of protein content. Don’t buy cheap food! Your vet knows best. No one has the exact answers, all dogs have a preference to additives, grain free, etc. dogs have allergies, stomach problems etc. best advice is from a vet.

I fed my working dog Royal Cannin…buy the German Shepherd food. He and I were LEO partners for 7.5 yrs. The food served him well. Feed 4 to 5 cups daily from 1 yr old until and if he starts getting chunky….then cut back to 3 to 3.5 cups daily to manage his weight. The kibble is large enough to use as a food reward in training. I would measure his food in 1 gallon zip loc bags….use that bag to ensure he eats only his daily ration. Feeding by hand in training…on the ground to reward tracking or article search… or in his bowl at the end of the day….feed him only his daily ration. This will prevent over feeding. My boy passed away 3 months ago….he was great at his job and I miss the old boy.

I’m not a raw feeder, basically because I can’t afford it; but if you can afford it, get a complete raw food, GSD tend to have sensitive stomachs and can have food allergies. Most people I know who raw feed and who’s dogs have had allergies have found it has helped reduce any Allergies the dogs have had. As I said if money wasn’t so tight I would definitely have my boy on raw.

We love GSDs and on our third one. Ours live to 11½ and more. Our long time vet suggests French-cut green beans mixed in dry food to keep weight down. Our present GSD rescue came with skin allergies and the vet suggested Salmon or Duck dry dog food…we went to Tractor Supply to buy it. The manager gave us two free small bags of each to let dog make a choice…Salmon was the choice. Skin allergies cleared right away.

The USDA’s Wildlife Services new assault on Migratory Birds at Brackenridge Park along with the City of San Antonio Parks turned violent in 2022! The USDA using a Depredation permit for lethal take (killing) from the Fish & Wildlife Service included Black Vultures and other species.
I have observed Migratory Egrets and Herons for the last five years during breeding season in Brackenridge Park. The waterbirds migrate from the Gulf of Mexico coastline, Mexico, Central or South America and include three species listed on the State’s Wildlife Action Plan or TCAP as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN). One species, the Little Blue Heron is listed as a “Species of High Concern” by the US Fish and Wildlife Service since 2021. Texas Species of Greatest Conservation Need.
Each spring a new cycle of life begins. Every animal and plant species has its own specific life cycle, all life cycles follow the same pattern. A new organism is born, it grows, matures, and eventually reproduces to create a new life cycle of animals. Each year nature regulates itself with the natural loss of chicks with Black Vultures providing their ecosystem services.
Vulture” comes from the Latin “vulturus”, meaning “tearer,” a reference to the way this bird eats. Vultures are part of nature’s clean-up crew. They rid the landscape of deteriorating carcasses and help curb the spread of dangerous diseases and bacteria, according to the Wildlife Center of Virginia.
According to an article by Vulture Conservation, “The work of vultures is what is referred to as an ecosystem service. And the importance of these magnificent birds is only truly felt when they suddenly disappear from an ecosystem.” How do vultures contribute to our environment?
We place blame on the USDA’s Wildlife Service and City of San Antonio for the missing Black Vultures as a result of the Ecosystem Disruption:
Aerial Assault on the Black Vultures.
The city began vegetation removal in December of 2021, and into January 2022. Trees that had been nested in were over-pruned. Crape Murder of trees that are beautiful when in bloom had half their branches removed that have now left them without much vegetation and flowers.
An ecosystem is a level of biological organization that refers to living organisms and their surrounding environment. Disruptions, or disturbances, in ecosystems are events that result in major changes to an ecosystem.
According to the US Fish & Wildlife Service, “quality habitat is extremely important during breeding season, when many birds nest in trees, shrubs, on the ground, or on rocks and rely on nearby resources to raise healthy young.
If that habitat is destroyed or disturbed during the breeding season, nests may be lost or abandoned or productivity may be reduced. Loss and degradation of quality bird habitats can lead to population declines at a local and national scale.”

According to an article featured by the David Suzuki Foundation, “Although biodiversity has the ability to reassert itself after mass extinctions, we can’t turn away from our own predicament. This ongoing mass extinction is the only one caused by a single species — us.”
According to David Stroud, former Senior Ornithologist at the UK’s Joint Nature Conservation Committee: “The ecological effects of a changing climate are already having significant consequences for the conservation of migratory waterbirds – changing distributions and influencing populations.
Egret and Heron chicks that fell out of nest into the San Antonio River-part of the effects of the ecosystem disturbance by humans. Destruction of habitat by humans is their biggest threat.
As they undertake their annual migrations, these migrants use sites in many countries. Changes to any of these may jeopardize their ability to complete their migration and influence populations. The implications of climate change on waterbirds are well established, across all continents, and need urgent attention from decision makers.”

A wild polar bear cub was captured and moved to Alaska Zoo in a rare decision that officials said was the best course of action.
Wildlife officials saw the cub roaming around the Prudhoe Bay area of Alaska alone and witnessed how comfortable the bear was around humans.
According to a press release from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the decision to move the cub to a zoo was made by polar bear program biologists and an Alaska Zoo veterinarian who feared for the welfare of the cub.
The male cub was orphaned and estimated to be around 11 months old and a little underweight.
The cub raised concerns particularly because of the potential for human-bear conflicts, as he was very comfortable around them.
The zoo said that the cub will not be on public display until he is in full health and they deem it appropriate.
“The decision to remove this bear from the wild was not made lightly,” David Gustine of the polar bear program that reviewed the cub’s situation said.
“Removing a bear is not a good outcome for the individual or the wild population, but we felt it was the best course of action in this situation.”
An orphaned polar bear cub was brought to the Alaska Zoo for his welfare by USFWS polar bear team biologists. Just a reminder that he is not yet in public view on zoo grounds. There is no mistaking that there were a number of global highs and extreme lows the world over in the year 2022. But for me, 2022 will be remembered as a year of perspective, self-belief, gratitude and community.

SEIZE THE MOMENT
At the start of January, I got a nostalgic feeling of where I was this time last year… unemployed, uncertain and a little apprehensive. Having recently resigned from my previous job, and with no guarantee of my next (as I had not yet begun Londolozi’s Ranger Program), it is easy to look back now and see how easy it was for a lot of self-doubts to creep in during times of change.
If there was only one lesson learned from 2022, it would be to seize the moment.
I’ve learned that you have to not only grab the opportunities that come your way with both hands but also create your own. It is never too late to strive for something better; something different. If it means getting some dutch courage to step into the unknown, do it!
STILLNESS
We often speak about the importance of mindfulness at Londolozi, and its benefits both mentally and physically.
One conversation I seem to have had frequently with a number of guests is about how surprised they are by their fatigue after their first few game drives. This year I’ve learned that being still, fully present and aware can be exhausting when you are out of practice.
When you are on safari, out in the open vehicles, you are consciously alert and engaged. The safari experience invites guests to be fully present for at least seven-eight hours a day. No distractions; just total cohesion amidst the vehicle with a shared goal or intention for each drive.
In the society and world we live in today, it is often tough to find a mere 20 minutes per day to ourselves. So amidst the hustle and bustle of city life, this wilderness area encourages us to slow down and be still. To draw our attention to some of the finer details of our surroundings.
I’ve learned that we could all do with some more daily stillness.

PATIENCE
I’ve learned to always stay with sleeping animals for an extra five minutes.
Some of my most memorable moments in the bush occurred after thinking that the leopard/lion was going to remain settled up. By practising a little more patience, we were often rewarded with a change in behaviour or activity that made the sightings even more special.
I’ve learned that patience is always rewarded.
FOLLOW THE SUN
This goes without saying – waking up at sunrise every day is a guaranteed ‘first win’ for the day.
As a guide, there are many variables in our job that are not in our control, and we constantly have to adapt (e.g. weather, animal behavior). In addition, it is inevitable that lion dynamics will change, leopard territories will shift, water resources ebb and flow, and seasons change. The bush has a remarkable way of reminding the team of guides and trackers to never get too comfortable in any given season and to expect the unexpected.
This past year I’ve learned to forgo expectations and embrace unpredictability.
RIGHT PLACE; RIGHT TIME
Here at Londolozi, and those familiar with African wilderness areas will be familiar with the phrase “right place; right time”. We often speak about moments where had we taken an extra minute to leave camp or decided not to stop and watch the impala lambs run around we would have missed the moment of spotting the leopard crossing the road ahead of our vehicle.
And these moments happen over and over again out on safari. As a guide and tracker team, we can do our best to plan our drive, follow up on tracks or respond to any signs in the bush – but sometimes it comes down to simply being in the right place at the right time.
I’ve learned that everything happens for a reason and you are right where you are meant to be.
The Flat Rock Male popped out into a small clearing of boulders providing us with a remarkable sighting in the northern part of our reserve opposite camps.
A dominant male leopard over the majority of the north. He originally took over the 4:4 Male’s territory when he died.
