A tiny helpless puppy was seen lying on a porch. He was in such distress that he wasn’t moving. A rescuer luckily was called in and when she approached the little pup, she could tell he was critically injured. The porch belonged to an abandoned house. Where did the little guy come from?

The rescuer searched for his mother just in case she needed help too. But his mama was nowhere to be found. She named the little pup Bernard and put him into her car. She kept talking to him and told him over and over it would be okay. He was unresponsive but finally, after a few minutes, he let out a little cry.

Bernard was taken straight to the vet clinic. He had a wound on his back that needed to be treated. Once he was out of the woods, the rescuer could look for a foster home. He stayed at the clinic until he was cleared. The rescuer made some phone calls and found Bernard a foster mom that was willing to take in such a young puppy. He needed to be bottle-fed and Dina was happy to do it.

The tiny pup took to sucking on a pacifier for comfort. Dina gave him a rainbow teddy bear as well hoping it would keep him company. Bernard bonded to the bear right away. As Bernard continued to heal and get bigger, Dina grew confident that he could go on to his forever home. She would miss him but she had to make room for new fosters and Bernard needed to start his new life.

Photographer Anne-Marie Scheepers, 52, took the pictures while visiting Kruger National Park in South Africa.

The photos show a crocodile clamping its teeth down and shaking the smaller croc.

The attack happened over the space of two hours.

Scheepers, from Johannesburg, said she was on an eight-day trip to Skukuza, the main camp in Kruger, where they stayed in the camping area.

She said: ‘As we were on our way from Lower-Sable, passing Sunset Dam, I noticed something strange and asked my friend if he would reverse so I could look again.

‘I saw the crocodile with another crocodile in its mouth and at first, thought it was part of a mating ritual.

‘But when I looked through the lens, I saw the blood on the big croc’s teeth.

‘It became clear to us that this was no mating ritual, but rather an attack.’

She said the big crocodile started to do the death roll in the water, with the small croc ‘still alive fighting bravely’.

‘We could see the small croc opening and slowly closing its mouth while moving its tail,’ Scheepers added.

The big croc then emerged from the water and repeatedly shook the little one every 10 to 15 minutes.

‘It was clear to me that the little one was still alive because he opened and closed his mouth and eyes and was shaking his tail at the end,’ Scheepers said.

The Nile crocodile, which inhabits sub-Saharan Africa, can reach a maximum size of about 20 feet and can weigh up to 1,650 pounds.

Adults eat fish, amphibians and reptiles, but can potentially kill a wide range of large vertebrates, including antelope, buffalo, young hippos and large cats.

Brandi H. Munden, vice president of PR and Communications for the American Kennel Club, says the AKC is a registry body, responsible for tracking the lineage of dogs representing 200 different breeds.

Registering a dog through the AKC includes a one-time registration fee for the lifetime of the dog, says Brandi. Registration is confirmed once the AKC Registration Certificate is issued in the names of the recorded owners and identifying the dog as the offspring of a known sire and dam, and of a recognized breed.

More specifically, the AKC Registration Certificate records you as the official owner on record for the dog and includes the dog’s registered name, registration number, the dog breed, the name of the dog’s sire and dam, the sex, whelp date, the breeder and owner’s name.

“AKC registration means that breeders dealing in AKC-registered or AKC-registrable dogs must open their kennels to AKC inspectors, who review care and conditions to make sure the dogs are bred in a safe and comfortable environment,” Brandi says.

She says when you get a dog represented as AKC-registrable from an AKC-registered litter, you follow this simple two–step process:

1. Request an AKC Dog Registration Application
2. Submit your application with required fees

AKC will process your registration and you will receive an AKC Registration Certificate. But you can also go through the process online at akc.org.

Brandi says for pet parents who have a purebred dog not eligible for AKC registration and want to participate in breed-specific sports, the AKC has a Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) program.

“PAL dogs must be at least six months of age and spayed or neutered,” Brandi says. “Both programs welcome all dogs to our AKC family — because all dogs belong here.”

Garlic is classified as a species of the Allium family. Onions, shallots, leeks, and chives are its other close relatives in the Allium family. Due to the compounds found in them called disulfides and thiosulfates, consuming them is toxic to dogs and cats. Heinz body anemia, methemoglobinemia, and hemolytic anemia are all indications of damage to red blood cells and are brought on by the consumption of garlic. In essence, the components in garlic have the ability to make the red blood cells circulating through the body of your pet extremely fragile and prone to rupture.

Some signs of garlic poisoning in dogs include vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, abdominal pain, weakness, lethargy and panting. 

The amount of garlic that can cause undesirable changes in a dog’s blood is between 15 and 30 grams of garlic per kilogram of body weight.

But be aware that it could take some time for the signs of garlic poisoning to show up. The symptoms may take a few days to appear, so it is best to call the vet right once if you suspect your dog has consumed too much garlic and still acts normal. 

And when you think feeding your dog garlic bread is okay because of the small amount of garlic that can be found in it, you’re wrong. It typically includes considerable amounts of butter, oil, cheese, and herbs in addition to garlic, all of which can cause stomach discomfort in dogs. Additionally, this meal provides your pet with no nutritional benefits and is a source of needless calories and fat.

What is Hemivertebrae?

Hemivertebrae is a congenital spinal malformation where your dog’s vertebrae are deformed. This is also known as the ‘butterfly’ vertebra due to how the vertebral body looks on the X-Ray. Vertebrae usually look like a spool from the side, but a dog with hemivertebrae’s spine will look like a wedge or a triangle. Due to the misalignment of the spinal cord, the nerves can be damaged or become compressed. This can lead to back pain, incontinence issues, and even impact the function of a dog’s back legs with Hemivertebrae. This condition may also be referred to as congenital scoliosis.

Hemivertebrae is most commonly seen in brachycephalic, screw-tailed dog breeds such as French bulldogs (English bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers). In screw tail dogs, the spinal malformation can occur higher up in the spine than other dogs, which can pinch or compress the spinal cord causing central nervous system problems.

How Do I Know If My Dog Has Hemivertebrae?

Hemivertebrae is often diagnosed by chance, and most dogs are never adversely affected by this condition. However, if your dog starts to show symptoms, it will most commonly begin in puppy hood because the vertebrae in the mid back have become affected and can cause symptoms.

Hemivertebrae Symptoms Include:

• Weakness of the hind limbs
• Incontinence
• Pain

Symptoms will worsen until your dog fully matures and the vertebrae stop growing. Dogs with a screw tail typically experience worse symptoms than other breeds. A dog’s Hemivertebrae symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the spinal cord compression. Loss of mobility can range from mild weakness in the back legs to complete loss of function.

Diagnosis and Treatment

A simple spinal x-ray will be able to definitively tell if your pup has hemivertebrae. To treat your dog’s condition, it’s important to know where the spine is compressed and how badly impacted the spinal column is. Both can be determined with spinal imaging.

If your dog is not experiencing symptoms of spinal compression, it will not need any particular treatment. Still, you may want to be cautious of allowing your dog to overly stress its spine as it will be more likely to have a spinal injury.

Should your dog show signs of weakness in their back legs or incontinence, the vet may recommend a surgical procedure called, a hemilaminectomy, which is when the material of the disc that is pressing against the spinal cord is removed. The spine will then be stabilized. With only minor symptoms treating the symptoms conservatively with crate rest anti-inflammatories will likely be recommended.

Does Having Hemivertebrae Mean My Dog Will Be Paralyzed?

Most likely no, the vertebral malformation usually occurs in the dog’s tail and does not affect the spinal cord. However, in a few cases where your dog becomes symptomatic, the hemilaminectomy surgery can help your dog regain the ability to walk.

To create an indoor obstacle course for your dog, begin by gathering items like towels, buckets, cushions and a broom handle. The more often you make up indoor obstacle courses, the more random ideas for new obstacles will come to you.

It can always be different, making it really fun and engaging for both you and your pooch. Here are some ideas to get you building your first indoor obstacle course!

Jumps are one of the most common items you’d find in an agility course, and you can make one (or many in a row) pretty easily in your living room. The most important part to making one is to make sure your jump bar easily falls off its stand. This is so your dog will not trip if their paw knocks the bar. If you find your pup is bumping the bar, lower it until they get the hang of their jump.

Riley also likes a small teeter totter made with a plank and a few rolled towels. Then switched it up and use the plank just as a ‘walk-it’ obstacle.

 

Next, I added a row of buckets for Riley to weave around and a couch cushion where he could do a “down-stay.”

When I was ready to change the course I added a series of rolled towels to create a ladder effect where he can practice paw awareness by stepping cleanly over them.

Towel “Fruit” Roll Up

If you don’t mind getting some fruit juice and colors on your dog towel, you could truly make this a doggie fruit roll up game! For a cleaner game use some dry treats.

To start, lay the towel out flat, place a few treats on one end, roll a bit, and repeat until the towel is fully rolled and full of snacks.

For more difficulty, have your dog sit-stay and watch you fill the towel.

Then release your pup to snuffle out the treats. If you find you need to up the challenge of the game, tie the towel into a knot, or knot it with a second towel.

Keep an eye out to make sure chewing through the towel doesn’t become your dog’s preferred method of getting to the treats. If so, you could opt for playing the game with rolls of newspaper instead, so that shredding is okay!

 

Snuffle Treasure Chest

Snuffle boxes (and mats) are great enrichment games for dogs and a fun way to give your pooch a nose workout and get that tail waggin’! The search for hidden snacks is definitely one of Riley’s favorite activities.

To play this game, start with a cardboard box and some newspaper or brown packing paper that is ready for recycling. Pick a box that is the appropriate size for your dog’s height so he can snuffle all the way to the bottom. Or go for one that is big enough for him to jump right in and root around. (So cute!)

To ease your dog into this game, place treats inside the box with newspaper lightly placed on top.

From there you can begin to increase the difficulty level of the game by adding more and more paper, smaller boxes with treats inside, or bunching up balls of paper with treats in the middle. You can also add their toys, a towel “fruit” roll up, or any other safe, light-weight items you can think of to provide different sensory experiences for your pup.

 

Repurpose Children’s Toys

The pet store isn’t the only place to find a dog toy! The children’s toy aisle of your favorite consignment shop is another opportunity to look for fun for your dog. With a bit of practice your dog could be stacking up rings like this!

 

Bottle Tumbler

For this dog enrichment game you’ll be digging into your recycling bin again for a plastic beverage container. I also chose a sock that was ready for retirement to cover the bottle because I wanted a softer mouth feel for Riley.

Next, cut 1-3 holes in each side of the bottle (more holes to make the game easier). Then, drop a handful of treats into the bottle and replace the cap.

This game can be played two ways. The first is simply to place the bottle on the floor for you dog to boop around.

If your pup isn’t sure what to do at first, show them how treats fall out as you push it. Soon they will be eager to try it themselves!

 

To increase the challenge, string up the bottle to an appropriate nose height for your pooch. This requires more problem solving skills to retrieve the treats. If your pup is up for the challenge, it will be very entertaining for them!

As with all these games, you’ll want to decrease the difficulty if you find your dog is feeling discouraged. Only play the games your dog loves and increase the difficulty as it is appropriate for them.

Tip: Always stay with your dog to monitor how they play any enrichment games you provide. That way you can make any safety adjustments to their playing style.

Bonus – Teach Them To Help You Clean Up

Once the cardboard is shredded and toys are everywhere, continue your pup’s engagement with a clean-up ‘pawrty’. A lot of dogs actually like to have ‘jobs’ like this, so give it a try by teaching your dog to pick up items and place them in a bin.

They’ll love to see how happy their help makes you and be especially proud and confident in themselves for a task well done!

A desperate and hungry leopard which went on a rampage and mauled 15 people has finally been stopped.

Earlier this week, the Daily Star reported how the wild beast struck in the north eastern Indian state of Assam on Monday (December 26), attacking 10 residents at the Rain Forest Research Institute in Chenijan.

It also struck several forest personnel, all because it was starving for food.

Ranjit Konwar, from the institute, told local media: “The leopard attacked two forest officers in the morning,

“The animal has become very aggressive, and we have laid traps inside the campus to capture it – efforts are on to track it.

“Some residents had a close shave as the leopard was roaming in their courtyards.”

It was thought that the animal had come to the campus from the nearby Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, where it roams freely.

One video of the rampaging beast showed it leaping over a high gate, crashing into a car before running away.

Among the others injured were two children and a woman, the Times of India reported.

Many of the injured were bitten and needed hospitalization, but they seem to be out of danger now.

But it has now been stopped – after being found breaking into a family home.

Local reports claim the animal had suffered a leg injury during its rampage and it was, at one point, spotted underneath a car on the campus.

Officials lost track of it, and found it near a residential home on Tuesday (December 27).

It took two tranquillizer darts to subdue it, before being taken for medical examination.

A spokesman said: “We were keeping a constant vigil and monitoring the situation in our efforts to tranquillize the leopard.

“Finally, after unrelenting efforts, our team managed to spot the leopard and tranquillize it by injecting two shots, first in an open area, and then inside a residential quarter of the institute’s campus around 9.30 am today.

“We will take a decision regarding the leopard after the medical examination.”

No update has been given on those injured by the leopard.

Intrigued by the outcome of our incredible discovery a few weeks ago, and following on from a similar story in Camp Dam. Obsessed with this story I couldn’t help but drive past this Spotted Eagle-Owl nest numerous times with each set of guests hoping to notice a change. Staring for what felt like hours through our binoculars trying to spot the slightest movement.

This however was all well worth it when we first spotted the chick! Meaning the eggs have hatched!

Although two eggs were laid, it seems that only one of them successfully hatched as we have only ever seen one chick in the nest.

Spotted eagle owls are highly social animals and form strong bonds with their mates and offspring. Both parents play a role in raising the chicks and ensuring their survival.

The chicks are born blind and completely helpless, so they rely on their parents for everything. The parents will bring them food and keep them warm and protected until they are old enough to start exploring and learning to hunt on their own which occurs from about four to six weeks old. By seven weeks old they are capable of flying confidently.

Parental care for the chicks lasts for about six to eight weeks and they will normally disperse at roughly four months. From about one year old, the fledgeling will reach sexual maturity and will have moved out of its parent’s territory.

After a successful morning game drive, Ray and I decided to stop for the obligatory coffee break in this familiar section of the Tugwaan drainage line as, not only is it beautiful, but also gave us a chance to walk down and check on the nest.

As we approached the nest, out flew two fully grown owls, and Ray with his sharp eyes spotted the movement from this flightless chick.

These beautiful owls are known for their striking appearance and their silent, stealthy hunting skills, but there’s something truly special about seeing this tiny helpless and vulnerable chick.

Viewing the nest through binoculars, we can get the slightest glimpse of the fluffy, downy bodies of the chick, big round eyes fixed on me with a mixture of curiosity and fear. It’s only a few weeks old, but already learning to navigate the world around it, learning to trust and rely on its parents for protection and sustenance.

Life Now from now on

Life for a Spotted Eagle-Owl fledgling (a young, recently fledged bird that is no longer dependent on its parents for food) will be the most challenging stage of its life.

During the fledgling stage, the young owl is learning to hunt and forage for food on its own. This can be a difficult and risky process, as the fledgling is still inexperienced and may not always be successful in catching prey. It may take several weeks or even months for the fledgling to fully develop its hunting skills and become proficient at finding food, during which time it is still semi-dependant on its parents.

With any luck, this young chick will quickly master the art of hunting, and we will continue to catch a glimpse of these owls as they glide past.

 

 

 

Whilst birding the Al Sikak farms near Salwa in southeast Saudi Arabia Phil Roberts hear a Pipit fly over calling. He alerted me to the bird and then relocated it flying over calling again, a single tsip call – similar to me to a Meadow Pipit, before it landed and started feeding in the small allotment type fields. I could see immediately it had very bold streaking with a thick malar stripe. It also had a large white, unbroken eye-ring, bold supercilium, bold breast streaking, strong wing-bars and plain greyish mantle. Most of these features can be seen on the photographs of the bird, although I only managed to get one in focus shot before it flew off and could not be relocated. I suggested to Phil that the bird could be a Buff-bellied Pipit so we tried for some time to relocate the bird. There were very few birds about of any species, but all we could see was a single Water Pipit. We came back again later in the day but again were not able to relocate the bird. Luckily both Phil and I managed to get photos, although not many, and I sent them to Yoav Perlman who has seen the japonicas sub-species in the field in Israel, and confirmed its identification as a Buff-bellied Pipit. This is the first record of Buff-bellied Pipit for Saudi Arabia, but a not unexpected addition as they probably winter in Israel and have occurred elsewhere in the Middle East (see below). The subspecies is sometimes called Siberian Pipit (Anthus (rubescens) japonicas) treated as a separate species from American Buff-bellied Pipit (Anthus rubescens rubescens), as it breeds in eastern Asia and is significantly different in terms of plumage characteristics from the latter which breed entirely within North America and western Greenland.

Buff-bellied Pipit (A. r. japonicas), breeds in central & western Siberia from Tunguska to Kamchatka and south to northern Sakhalin & the Kurile Islands. They winter in eastern & southern China, Honk Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, northern India, northern Myanmar & northern Vietnam with birds being recorded regularly in Israel. Vagrant birds have been seen in Italy and regularly in the Middle East (mainly Israel) during migration and winter. The species status in the Middle East is listed here:

Oman:  Vagrant – 8 records

UAE:  Rare but regular winter visitor, sometimes in small groups, mainly from Dubai northwards with the first record: One Ruwais 26-27 December 1996.

Qatar:  Vagrant – Six (at least) Al Shamal Park 25 December 2014 to 6 February 2015.

Saudi Arabia:  Vagrant – One record Al Sikak farms, near Salwa 23 December 2022.

The polar bear population in Canada’s western Hudson Bay has dropped by 27% in just five years, a report has said.

A government report estimates that 618 animals lived in the area last year, down from 842 in 2016.

It says adult female bears and cubs are particularly affected and that climate change may be a factor in the decline.

The Arctic is now warming faster than the rest of the world, and the sea ice on which bears depend for seal hunting forms later and melts sooner each year.

By 2050, conservation scientists now say, the length of the season during which there is no ice could push bears to the point of starvation.

“The observed declines are consistent with long-standing predictions regarding the demographic effects of climate change on polar bears,” the Canadian government report says.

At the same time, the document cautions against making a direct link between the decline and the loss of sea ice, pointing that four of the past five years have seen good ice conditions.

It suggests that changes in the local seal population could be a contributing factor.

The report also cites the bear’s migration to neighbouring regions.

The mammals – the largest living land carnivorous animals – pass along the western Hudson Bay coast in Manitoba province every autumn as they return to the sea ice.

They are the most studied specimen in the world, and their migration attracts millions of dollars’ worth of tourism to the Manitoban town of Churchill, dubbed “the polar bear capital of the world”.

It is common practice for town residents to leave their car doors unlocked so others have somewhere to run to should they encounter a wandering bear.

As the Arctic warms, concern for the plight of Santa’s favourite sleigh pullers is mounting. But in one small corner of the far flung north – Svalbard – Rudolph and his friends are thriving.

Warmer temperatures are boosting plant growth and giving Svalbard reindeer more time to build up fat reserves; they also appear to be shifting their diets towards “popsicle-like” grasses that poke up through the ice and snow, data suggests.

Smaller and plumper than their Lapplandish cousins, yet boasting impressive antlers nonetheless, Svalbard reindeer inhabit almost all non-glaciated areas of the Svalbard archipelago, which sits just 500 miles (800km) from the North Pole.

Like other Arctic regions, Svalbard has experienced thicker snowfall, and more frequent rain-on-snow events – where rain falls on an existing snowpack and freezes – in recent years, making it harder for reindeer to dig for food.

Reports of mass reindeer starvations in Russia, and declining caribou populations in Canada and Alaska, have also prompted concern for Svalbard’s reindeer. Yet, in the most productive parts of the archipelago, reindeer populations have flourished in recent decades.

To investigate what might be driving the population increase, Tamara Hiltunen, a doctoral student at the University of Oulu in Finland, and her colleagues turned to annual blood samples collected in late winter as part of a long-term monitoring study. By comparing the proportion of carbon and nitrogen isotopes in these samples, they could infer what kinds of plants the reindeer had been eating in preceding weeks.

The research, published in Global Change Biology, suggested that between 1995 and 2012 – a period marked by the normalisation of rain-on-snow events, increased summer temperatures and a growing reindeer population – there was a dietary shift away from low-growing mosses and towards grass-like “graminoid” plants.

“The erect nature of the graminoid stems allows that forage to be available to the animals, even though you might have a centimetre or so of ice,” said Prof Jeffrey Welker at the University of Oulu, who supervised the research. “You have the equivalent of popsicle sticks, which are nutritious enough that those animals can sustain themselves, even during these stressful periods of winter.”

Higher soil temperatures and greater amounts of reindeer droppings and urine falling on the ground are also boosting the growth of graminoids, which may further benefit the Svalbard reindeer.

“This is definitely encouraging news,” said Prof Jaakko Putkonen at the University of North Dakota, whose research previously predicted an increase in Arctic regions affected by rain as the century wears on. “However, nature is an endless web of interdependent variables. Some of the upcoming changes may be good to the reindeer and some may be detrimental.

“For example, from Scandinavia there are reports of rain on snow promoting the growth of fungi (eg toxic moulds) under the snowpack due to warmer conditions which has led the reindeer to avoid those areas. They may be trading one challenge for another one.”

Welker also cautioned that events in Svalbard may not apply to other regions of the Arctic.

“Just as we see signs that a reindeer population on Svalbard might have some ways of adapting and adjusting to these changes, that could allow them to sustain themselves, we’ve got other groups in Alaska, for instance, that are declining.

“It really speaks to the complexity of the Arctic. Events that are happening in one place are not identical to those that are happening in others.”

However, for Svalbard’s reindeer, the future looks bright – and the archipelago a promising recruitment ground should Santa need further helpers. Given their diminutive size, though, he may need to invest in a smaller sleigh.

“I’m sure they could do it, they just might be a little bit obese,” said Hiltunen. “But maybe if they lived with Santa, they wouldn’t need so much fat to keep themselves alive.”
