Human Rights Education Brings Hope to Haiti Children

    [ad_1]

Understanding human rights is the first step to gaining these rights for oneself and others.

    Press Release

    Jul 21, 2016

According to the Human Rights Watch World Report, a form of human trafficking is still widespread in Haiti:

Use of child domestic workers—known as restavèks—continues. Restavèks, the majority of whom are girls, are sent from low-income households to live with wealthier families in the hope that they will be schooled and cared for in exchange for performing light chores.

Though difficult to calculate, some estimates suggest that 225,000 children work as restavèks.These children are often unpaid, denied education, and physically or sexually abused.

In the Human Development Index of the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Report, Haiti is listed at 163 of 188 nations and ranks lowest of all Western Hemisphere countries.

Youth for Human Rights International believes education, and specifically human rights education, is key in turning this scene around. The group not only provided a full set of educational materials to a Haitian charity that is teaching children their rights, they also sent the school a laptop, camera and projector so they can deliver the full program to youngsters in that country.

The first step to securing human rights is gaining an understanding of the 30 articles of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the world’s premier human rights document.

The Church of Scientology supports Youth for Human Rights. Scientologists on six continents engage in collaborative efforts with government agencies and nongovernmental organizations to bring about broad-scale awareness and implementation of the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the world’s premier human rights document.

  • Mvix Launches Digital Docket Display System for Courthouses

Mvix Launches Digital Docket Display System for Courthouses

    [ad_1]

Mvix launches a dynamic Docket Display System for courthouses that shows real-time case information such as case & room numbers, time, etc.

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 7, 2020

The Mvix Docket Display Systems are driven by their simple yet innovative Court Docket app. The app pulls case information from a docket database (in CSV, XML or JSON files) or case management system, arranges the data in a format that is attractive and easy to read, then displays the information on a digital screen. Updates made to the docket are automatically reflected on the digital displays.

Designed to empower court clerks, the intuitive docket displays can get very granular in the case information they display. In addition to names, case numbers, courtrooms and time, the docket displays can also show a description of the hearing, attorney information, building/floor, and the presiding judge. Clerks can even display custom information that’s specific to their court e.g. police officer names in traffic court.

With the digital docket displays, courts can enjoy faster throughput and more effective outcomes. The digital case information displays will reduce overall operating costs by eliminating the consumption of paper and printer supplies.

They will also increase the efficiency of court clerks by cutting down on the time and effort required to display case information. Real-time information can be rendered across a bank of docket displays, all from a centralized location. The displays can be configured to show different information relative to their location. For example, a display in the courthouse lobby can show the docket of all judges, while a display in the hallway outside a courtroom can show the docket for that specific judge.

The docket displays will also improve the court experience. When visitors can quickly find the information they need, congestion and crowding in high traffic areas will be eliminated. The digital real estate provided by the displays enables clerks to display multiple content at the same time e.g. show the docket alongside weather, news, court announcements, etc. Screens at the exit/entrance can also show traffic information. Displaying such relevant information will further improve the court experience.

One of the unique features of the Mvix Docket Display System is its versatility. In the event of an emergency, the displays can be used as emergency messaging solutions. Emergency alerts, including CAP alerts from local and national sources, can take over the displays and override current content to provide information about the emergency and instructions on what to do.

“The Docket Display System does an excellent job of improving court performance through improved coordination and communication,” said A. Jay, the Mvix Senior Director of Business Relations. “This is a cost effective tool that every court needs especially in this digital age. It meets the needs of court personnel and visitors, and executes impeccably.”

Homelessness a State of Emergency in “YHomeless?” Documentary Film

    [ad_1]

Last year, homelessness was declared a state of emergency in nine U.S. jurisdictions. This upward trend in “the new homeless” in post-Recession America is the focus of “YHomeless”, a feature length documentary directed by Glen Dunzweiler, released by Cinema Libre Studio on DVD and Video on Demand this month.

    Press Release

    Jul 14, 2016

Last year, homelessness was declared a state of emergency in nine U.S. jurisdictions in California, Washington, Oregon and the State of Hawaii. In New York City, the Coalition for the Homeless released statistics showing how homelessness for New Yorkers rose at an astonishing rate from 2011 through 2014, cresting at a record 60,939 men, women and children bedding down each evening in municipal shelters. This upward trend in “the new homeless” in post-Recession America is the focus of “YHomeless?”, a feature length documentary directed by Glen Dunzweiler, released by Cinema Libre Studio on DVD and Video on Demand this month.

When faced with the possibility of losing his home, Dunzweiler used money earmarked for the bank, and went on the road to thirteen American cities interviewing homeless people and service providers to find out what it is like to be homeless in America. Intrigued by statistics on “the new homeless,” defined as people who lost their homes due to a job loss or the economic downturn, Dunzweiler-who approached this project as a first-time filmmaker-was on the road for four months, living out of and sleeping in his car (or on friends’ couches) and taking showers at a local branch of his gym while handling all aspects of interviewing and digitally filming by himself.  He quickly learned that his perceptions about the homeless were incorrect. As Dunzweiler confesses, “To be homeless I thought you had to be addicted to drugs or mentally ill.”

“To be homeless I thought you had to be addicted to drugs or mentally ill.”

    Glen Dunzweiler, Documentary film director

Through interviews with people living on the streets [in Santa Monica (CA), Riverside (CA), Sacramento (CA), Los Angeles (CA), San Francisco (CA), Las Vegas (NV), Portland (OR), Denver (CO), Kansas City (MO), Washington (DC), Memphis (TN) and Springfield (MA)] and service providers the 87-minute film addresses many of the misconceptions about the homeless:

    1)      That it’s a matter of “will,” i.e. that people “choose” to be homeless.

    2)      That panhandling is a viable way to make a living or that those who do it make “good money.”

    3)      That people living on the streets are either drug addicts or mentally ill

    4)      Although men seem to be more visible on the streets, there are many families, women and children without homes

    5)      Our veterans are taken care of. In some cities, 1 in 4 people on the streets are military veterans

Of the 50 homeless people and 25 advocates interviewed, one of the main reasons cited for living on the streets is lack of permanent affordable housing and declining incomes.

    SYNOPSIS:

Facing possible foreclosure on his home, director Glen Dunzweiler decides to find out why people in the homeless communities of America ended up on the streets. Traveling to 13 cities and eliciting personal accounts from people of different races, genders, and ages, he offers a platform to those in our society whose circumstances are quite often misunderstood, all while living out of his car in an attempt to learn what it’s like to be homeless himself.

Medill Justice Project Podcast Provides Rare Behind-the-Scenes Look at Investigation of Death Row Inmate’s Case

    [ad_1]

Seven-episode series follows MJP staff and students who spent 10 weeks examining Tommy Zeigler’s conviction. Listen to class strategy sessions, extended cuts of interviews with key subjects and students’ reactions as they search for the truth.

    Press Release

    Jul 13, 2016

For the first time, The Medill Justice Project releases a podcast series offering listeners exclusive access to its investigation of a potentially wrongful conviction.

Over 10 weeks this spring, a team of Northwestern University undergraduate and graduate students examined a 40-year-old murder case, discovering significant details overlooked and ballistics evidence that points away from Tommy Zeigler, who was convicted of the crime.

The students investigated the case as part of a journalism class MJP supports at the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications.

“The Medill Justice Project is a unique program,” said Northwestern University Prof. Alec Klein, MJP’s director. “There’s no other known program like it in the world where students at a university, as part of a class, investigate a real murder case where the accused says that he or she has been wrongfully convicted or charged and then we publish our findings for the world.”

The podcast is available as at http://www.medilljusticeproject.org/mjp-radio/.

In June, MJP published its investigation of the case, shedding light on two witnesses who call into question Zeigler’s guilt but whose accounts never made it into the trial. Prosecutors argued Zeigler shot himself in the lower torso to make it appear he was the victim of a robbery. But experts say it is practically unheard of for someone to shoot themselves in such a critical place, risking death, to cover up a crime. And the two key witnesses against Zeigler offered accounts of the night of the crime that have changed over the years while details have disappeared.

    About The Medill Justice Project

The Medill Justice Project, founded at Northwestern University in 1999, is an award-winning national investigative journalism center that examines potentially wrongful convictions, probes national systemic criminal justice issues and conducts groundbreaking research. As journalists, MJP advocates only for the truth.

15 Months Later, Nepal Still in Urgent Need of Help

    [ad_1]

Scientology Volunteer Ministers continue their work in Nepal, helping the country recover from the 2015 earthquakes.

    Press Release

    Jul 6, 2016

A permanent Scientology Volunteer Ministers center in Kathmandu is the center of a movement that continues to bring help to those left devastated by the 2015 Nepal earthquakes.

The center coordinates the work of thousands of volunteers working in villages throughout the country. And with more than 2 million still homeless because of the earthquakes, many of these teams of volunteers specialize in construction.

This past week nearly 1,000 Volunteer Ministers worked on construction projects, demolishing condemned structures, clearing out rubble and building houses in 17 districts including Kahtmandu, Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot, Laliptur and Tanahu.

But Nepal was struggling even before the earthquakes. The country already ranked near the bottom of the United Nations Development Human Development Index. And in 2011, according to the national living standards survey, more than 30 per cent of Nepalese subsisted on less than $14 each month. Increasing the standard of living and moving to a technology-based culture requires skills that are baulked by illiteracy and the quality of schooling in the country.

To help create a better future, Volunteer Ministers are working with schools to ensure youth learn the study skills they need to survive in today’s world. Each week they train hundreds of children and youth on the study technology developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard.

The Kathmandu Volunteer Ministers Center itself is a dynamic and lively activity, training volunteers from districts throughout the country on the 19 Volunteer Ministers courses so they can return to their homes and help their communities.

Whether serving at home or on the other side of the world, the motto of the Scientology Volunteer Minister is “Something can be done about it.” The program, created in the mid 1970s by L. Ron Hubbard and sponsored by the Church of Scientology International as a religious social service, constitutes one of the world’s largest international independent relief forces.

  • With Orlando Massacre, Premiere of New Amazon Series Conveys Powerful Message of Acceptance

With Orlando Massacre, Premiere of New Amazon Series Conveys Powerful Message of Acceptance

    [ad_1]

After the deadliest mass shooting in history, the premiere of the new show ‘Back Stabber’ has come at the perfect time, bringing a powerful message surrounding acceptance, anti-bullying and embracing who you are.

    Press Release

    Jun 27, 2016

With its successful premiere this past Friday, the highly anticipated new series on Amazon has come at the right time, bringing a message of accepting everyone for who they are. Created and written by openly gay actor Ryan Zamo, the show is loosely based on his real life experiences, he said, “I came out 11 years ago when I was just 16-years-old, and at the time I was really young to do so. And sadly, I faced a lot of bullying because of it. I grew up in a town where no one else had come out yet, and since I didn’t know better, I tried everything to mold myself into what they wanted. It took a while for me to be okay with who I am…so I wanted to bring the message of accepting everyone, because the world needs to see that we are all just human.”

A recent and very public campaign, which targeted the 27-year-old’s orientation hit national headlines this past December. The news spread quickly after Westboro Church attacked Zamo and his fiancé via social media. However, also owning an organic cosmetics company, the wild antics of Westboro back fired, driving sales through the roof for his company Z Skin Cosmetics. He said, “This is just one example of why we wanted to get the show out there, we want people to accept everyone for who they are, regardless of age, race, orientation, religion etc.”

The main characters in ‘Back Stabber’ provide a powerful message of unconditional love and friendship, regardless of one’s background. The show touches on taboo subjects including; teen pregnancy, being a single parent, recovery from addiction, acceptance, adultery, bullying, embezzlement, and many other sensitive subjects in today’s society.

Individually, each of the storylines in ‘Back Stabber’ carry multiple messages. Two of the main characters, Sam and Isaiah, are faced with the challenges of coming out and being bullied, as well as being accepted by their family. Isaiah, eccentric and vibrant to say the least, lives in fear of telling his parents he’s gay. Zamo commented, “I based his back story on some of the real events my friends have gone through. I think the show will open people’s minds because the situations the characters are faced with are all based off of real life stories, so hopefully viewers will sympathize.”

However, with major blows and setbacks over the past year, ‘Back Stabber’ almost never came to be. The show was created over 7 years ago, but had no interest from Hollywood producers. Zamo said, “I wrote the first episode in film school as a final project, which I happened to get a C on, but the message behind this story was something I’ve always fought for. Nothing was going to stop me from seeing it through, and finally last year, I decided I would just produce it myself.” With no financial backers, sponsors or Hollywood interest, season 1 was fully produced for under $2,000. The young creator said, “I used my own equipment, and spent weeks watching video tutorials on how they edit blockbuster movies. The show looks like a multi-million-dollar project because I was able to do everything myself, including CGI, special FX, sound mastering, color correcting, soundscaping, marketing, website development and everything else. I knew I had to get this message out there, so I poured my soul into it, I sucked it up and for the past 365 days I’ve done non-stop work on this show.”

Among other things, the show also incorporates cyber bullying, teen bullying and standing up for yourself. The 27-year-old creator said, “I wrote the show making Isaiah and Sam the ‘cool kids’, hoping to show people that it’s okay to have gay friends, because we’re actually pretty cool. Also in the clique of friends are testosterone driven straight men, and despite the drama that takes place throughout the season, they still stand up for the two gay guys when needed.”

At the June 23rd red carpet premiere for the new Amazon series, the event hosted raffles for high-end luxury items, which they donated the proceeds to anti-bullying organizations. With celebrity teen ambassadors for other organizations that take a stand against bullying, the event drove home its message of acceptance and trying to make a change in the world.

Following the recent tragic events in Orlando, the new Amazon series ‘Back Stabber‘ has the potential to create a shift in today’s society, creating a positive impact on embracing everyone for who they are. With many activists now trying to put a stop to the violence and bullying both online and off, the new show’s success will hopefully start a positive movement with its messages of love and acceptance for all.

Season 1 of Back Stabber is now available on Amazon Video, and free with amazon prime, visit:

World Refugee Day Message for a World in Crisis

    [ad_1]

Wars and persecution have driven more people from their homes than at any time since United Nations Refugee Agency began recording these statistics, according to a new report released today.

    Press Release

    Jun 20, 2016

Los Angeles, California, June 20, 2016 (Newswire) –The United Nations Refugee Agency defines a refugee as someone “who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence.”

In his World Refugee Day message,  UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon said, “Our responses to refugees must be grounded in our shared values of responsibility sharing, non-discrimination, and human rights and in international refugee law, including the principle of non-refoulement [the forcible return of refugees or asylum seekers to a country where they are liable to be subjected to persecution].”

Our responses to refugees must be grounded in our shared values of responsibility sharing, non-discrimination, and human rights and in international refugee law, including the principle of non-refoulement.

    Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General

According to the United Nations, “every minute eight people leave everything behind to escape war, persecution or terror.” The magnitude of this situation calls for cooperation between government agencies, religious groups, civil society and caring individuals everywhere.

Scientology Churches and Scientologists advocate for the rights of refugees as an intrinsic element of their human rights initiative. For example:

Throughout the year, Churches of Scientology and their parishioners from Pasadena to Pretoria, Tampa to Taiwan, Mexico City to Manhattan and Plymouth to St. Petersburg promote human rights awareness through petition drives, educational programs and forums.

Scientologists on six continents engage in collaborative efforts with government agencies and nongovernmental organizations to bring about broad-scale awareness and implementation of the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the world’s premier human rights document.

Worldview Publications will release Jeremy R. Hammond’s new book, Obstacle to Peace: The US Role in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict on July 9, 2016.

In a meticulously documented account, Jeremy R. Hammond deconstructs standard mainstream narratives about the conflict, shattering popular myths and navigating the maze of conflicting information to reveal a clear direction forward.

“Obstacle to Peace is a call to action. To achieve peace, there needs to be a proper understanding about the true nature of the conflict. The book’s purpose is to empower readers with knowledge to effect the necessary paradigm shift.”

Jeremy R. Hammond, Author of Obstacle to Peace

The publication date coincides with the anniversary of the International Court of Justice’s 2004 advisory opinion finding that Israel’s settlements and separation wall in the occupied West Bank are violations of international law.

The Court’s ruling underscores the legal foundations of the two-state solution to the conflict, which include the requirement of international law that Israel fully withdraw from the Palestinian territories it occupied during the June 1967 “Six Day War”.

As Obstacle to Peace details, the framework for negotiations under the US-led “peace process” is one that rejects the applicability of international law. Far from being designed to produce a peaceful settlement, the so-called “peace process” is the process by which Israel and the US block implementation of the two-state solution.

The book sets out to demonstrate that US policy is itself a primary impediment to a peaceful solution and constitutes a rejection of the right of the Palestinians to self-determination. The book also closely examines the role of the mainstream media in manufacturing consent for the US’s rejectionist policy.

Obstacle to Peace is a call to action,” says author Jeremy R. Hammond. “To achieve peace, there needs to be a proper understanding about the true nature of the conflict. The book’s purpose is to empower readers with knowledge to effect the necessary paradigm shift.”

Obstacle to Peace will be available on July 9 from Amazon.com and other fine retailers, in both hardcover and paperback editions, with electronic editions later to be announced.

Review copies are available, and the author is available for interviews. View the media kit at:

    Press Release

    Jun 17, 2016

Melbourne-based Eikonic R&D Pty Ltd, “Eikonic” yesterday announced that it is the winner of $100K in a global competition initiated by a partnership between the Queensland Government and Johnson & Johnson Innovation. The competition was seeking novel and  disruptive human healthcare innovations to address unmet medical needs. The funding will assist EIKONIC in the development and commercialisation of its nanotechnology-inspired, preventive topical application for the treatment of gum disease.

At least half of the world’s population experiences some form of gum disease, a disease with links to many chronic non-communicable diseases, for example: diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. It is a huge market problem that hasn’t been solved. It affects the supporting structures around the teeth and, when not treated, can result in tooth loss. It affects quality of life as people can’t eat properly and may suffer from physical, psychological, and social disability.

Oral health is a basic human right and we believe we have a solution for the prevention of gum disease; a solution, which may positively impact other chronic diseases and significantly reduce dental and medical costs worldwide. Every man, woman and child should have access to these products.

Ingrid Rodriguez, Founder & Managing Director

Eikonic’s Founder and MD Ingrid Rodriguez said, “We are extremely grateful to the Queensland Government and Johnson & Johnson Innovation for their commitment to human healthcare innovation and support of our company. Oral health is a basic human right and we believe we have a solution for the prevention of gum disease; a solution, which may positively impact other chronic diseases and significantly reduce dental and medical costs worldwide. Every man, woman and child should have access to these products. This funding will help us deliver on our objective of an easy to use, daily applied, topical application, avoiding the need for conventional complex, costly and invasive procedures. As a state and country, we need to focus on innovation through research and development in order to ensure that Australian research and innovation remains at the forefront of global health solutions. This funding reflects a public and private partnership approach to supporting research and development.”

This latest funding represents a significant milestone for this social enterprise company headquartered in Melbourne, Australia.

Eikonic will work with a number of Queensland-based academic partners and contract research organisations to help further validate the technology. This work will accelerate the development of the technology, thus bringing it closer to the patients that need it the most.

    About EIKONIC R&D PTY LTD

EIKONIC R&D PTY LTD is a Melbourne-based company developing nanotechnology-based compounds for the prevention of oral diseases, in particular gum disease and tooth decay. The company’s vision is to benefit human wellbeing through oral healthcare by driving improvements through the delivery of innovative oral healthcare products.

    About Gum Disease

Gum disease impacts fifty to ninety percent of global population and prevalence increases with age. Current treatments take the form of physically scraping the tooth and root surface as well as surgery, which are mostly invasive, painful and expensive. Therapeutics exist in the form of gels, rinses, paste and antibiotics, but they don’t solve the problem. The global treatment market for gum disease is approximately worth USD $2B. It’s a treatment market that doesn’t address prevention.

Ballistics Evidence Points Away From Prisoner Tommy Zeigler, Experts Say. Zeigler’s fate is in play as he seeks new DNA testing in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down Florida’s death penalty.

    Press Release

    Jun 13, 2016

In an investigation of a 40-year-old Florida murder case, a team of Northwestern University undergraduate and graduate students has discovered significant details overlooked in the case and ballistics evidence that points away from Tommy Zeigler, who was convicted of the crime. The students’ investigation (www.medilljusticeproject.org) also found conflicting accounts from key eyewitnesses that raise questions about what happened when four people were killed in a bloody massacre in a furniture store in Winter Garden, near Orlando, Florida.

“What the students have uncovered is remarkable and significantly challenges the conviction of a man who faces the death penalty,” said Northwestern University Prof. Alec Klein, director of The Medill Justice Project, who oversaw the 10 students’ work as part of a class he teaches.

“What the students have uncovered is remarkable and significantly challenge the conviction of a man who faces the death penalty.”

Alec Klein, Northwestern University Professor and Director of The Medill Justice Project

Among The Medill Justice Project’s findings:

    • Two witnesses call into question Zeigler’s guilt but their accounts never made it into the trial. Those witnesses, Ken and Linda Roach, heard 12 to 15 gun shots within four seconds as they were driving by the furniture store where the murders took place. The Roaches said authorities were not interested in hearing their story and wouldn’t provide information for them to contact the defense attorneys. Ballistics experts interviewed for this story say it would be virtually impossible for a single person to fire a non-automatic weapon so quickly.

    • Zeigler, who has always maintained his innocence, was discovered at the crime scene with a bullet hole through his lower torso. At trial, the prosecution argued Zeigler shot himself to make it appear he was the victim of a robbery. But experts interviewed for this story say it is practically unheard of for someone to shoot themselves in such a critical place, risking death, to cover up a crime. The experts also note the angle of the bullet, as it passed through his body, would have required him to use his non-dominant left hand to fire the weapon. And based on ballistics evidence, Zeigler would have had to shoot himself with the gun positioned away from his body, depriving him of the ability to stabilize the gun’s muzzle against his body.

    • The two key witnesses against Zeigler offered accounts of the night of the crime that have changed over the years while details have disappeared, according to interviews with sources, police records, trial transcripts and other court documents as well as investigative reports.

Renowned Speaker Helps Narconon Suncoast Clients Identify Keys to Successful Sobriety

    [ad_1]

Narconon Suncoast rehabilitation center hosted international educator, author and life skills expert, Bernard Percy on Sunday, June 5th. Mr Percy spoke about identifying talents and purposes essential to finding satisfying and rewarding work and activites in their new sober lives. Clients discovered how successful addiction recovery depends on knowing their unique strengths, increasing their personal responsiblity level and applying effective life skills to solve everyday problems.

The Narconon Suncoast drug and alcohol rehabilitation center hosted international educator, author and life skills expert Bernard Percy on Sunday, June 5th. Mr. Percy spoke to clients of the Narconon program about creating a successful life after rehab, helping them focus on their own talents and purposes. In this way, each individual will be able to find the most satisfying and rewarding work and activities in their new sober lives.

“My purpose is to help people raise their understanding and awareness of themselves and the roles they play in life and to also inspire them to action,” explained Mr. Percy. “When someone knows what they are good at and love to do, it’s almost impossible to sit around and be unproductive. Identifying and strengthening their talents is key to helping those in rehab start to build powerful and productive post-rehab lives.”

“When someone knows what they are good at and love to do, it’s almost impossible to sit around and be unproductive. Identifying and strengthening their talents is key to helping those in addiction treatment start to build powerful and productive post-rehab lives.”

Bernard Percy, Narconon Suncoast Guest Speaker

Mr. Percy went on to describe the value of the Life Skills Courses that are a vital part of the Narconon rehabilitation program. “The coursework on this program teaches clients to identify the type of people they benefit from having in their lives. As they identify destructive people in their pasts, it’s easy for them to see why certain situations didn’t work out. They learn tools to improve any situation and deal with what life throws at them. I added a little icing on the cake by helping them discover their own talents and how they can best put those to work helping others. It’s fantastic to see them realize they can be successful. That’s really important to a person recovering from addiction who has usually left all his fulfilling activities behind!”

Narconon Suncoast’s two-year graduate follow-up program further helps each graduate implement these new life skills as he (or she) constructs a productive, enjoyable and sober life for himself. It’s important for each aftercare plan to utilize each individual’s strengths, talents, abilities, resources and inherent values. Mr. Percy’s presentation integrated perfectly with each student’s plan for maintaining future sobriety.

One of Sunday’s participants commented on how he felt about his future after Mr. Percy’s workshop: “I had been pretty nervous about even thinking about what I wanted to do after rehab because I have failed so many times before. After looking at my personality and what I was doing before, I see why I wasn’t successful. I was always faking it! Now I can look for a job or business where I can just be me and not have that stress of pretending to be someone else.”

Another participant said, “I’d like to thank Mr. Percy for helping me remember that I did do some really good things in life that made me proud. I had forgotten that I used to do good things before drugs changed me. Seeing that made me realize I can do that again!”

The Foundations of Brilliance program that Mr. Percy teaches around the world is designed to help people discover and develop their unique strengths.  As these Narconon students identified their own innate talents, they became more capable of drawing on those strengths to overcome life’s challenges. That adds up to being able to maintain productive, drug-free lives.

Narconon Suncoast rehabilitation center is located on seven and a half tropical acres in sunny Clearwater, Florida.  The newly opened state-of- the-art facility is fully licensed as a residential addiction treatment center by the Florida Department of Children and Families and accepts those who are ready to leave their lives of addiction behind and build drug-free lives.  If you know someone who is struggling with drug or alcohol addiction or for admissions information call (877) 841-5509.  All calls are confidential.

New York Nonprofit receives $1,500 grant from the New Yankee Stadium Community Benefits Fund.

    Press Release

    Jun 6, 2016

Special Citizens Futures Unlimited was awarded a $1,500 grant from the New Yankee Stadium Community Benefits Fund, Inc. The purpose of this fund is to improve the quality of life in the Bronx by addressing civic, socioeconomic and/educational needs and providing social arts, health, cultural, and recreational opportunities.

Special Citizens received this grant thanks to the help of Tatiana O’Connor, Community Habilitation Supervisor. This grant will go towards recreational activities for all Special Citizens program participants.

“We are very thrilled about the many recreational possibilities this grant can provide to the individuals we serve. We see it as an opportunity to integrate all the individuals we serve by providing them with a diversity of recreational and social activities.”

    Tatiana O’Connor, Community Habilitation Supervisor

“We are very thrilled about the many recreational possibilities this grant can provide to the individuals we serve. We see it as an opportunity to integrate all the individuals we serve by providing them with a diversity of recreational and social activities,” said O’Connor.

In March 2016, Special Citizens received a $50,000 from the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). This grant has been used to strengthen Special Citizens technology infrastructure. “I decided to search for grants related to our programs, and I came across this grant. I was happy when requirements of this grant suited the mission of the Community Habilitation Program,” said O’Connor.

Although O’Connor spearheaded this project, she mentioned those who assisted her in this process. “Yes, Jessica Zufall, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer and Crystal DeLeon, Community Habilitation Coordinator were very enthusiastic and helpful and they made the application process super smooth.”

Adults with developmental disabilities often have difficulty finding social and recreational activities to participate within their community.

“Enabling them to have access to their community and building significant relationships with others can be extremely rewarding. Meaningful activities can expose these deserving men and women to new and exciting experiences, alleviate stress, and promote happier and healthier lifestyles. Lastly this can help them gain confidence and promote independence,” said O’Connor.

The Board of Directors of Crossroads Community Ministries is pleased to announce the selection of Tony Johns as its next Executive Director. Currently Chief Operating Officer of City of Refuge, Johns takes up his duties with Crossroads Community Ministries on July 1st.

“We are simply thrilled with this appointment,” noted Crossroads Board Chair, Wayne Vason, senior counsel with Troutman Sanders. “Over the past 16 years,” continued Vason, “Stan Dawson and his team built a gratifying reputation for combining compassion, accountability and dignity in service to the homeless among us. Tony Johns’s record with one of our key partners, the City of Refuge, along with his lifelong pattern of service to others have prepared him superbly for this opportunity.”

“I have experienced first-hand the impact of Crossroads’ work with some of the most vulnerable people in our community. I am humbled by the board’s vote of confidence and look forward to working with the committed staff and volunteers as together we collaborate with others in service to people in need.”

Noted Johns, “I have experienced first-hand the impact of Crossroads’ work with some of the most vulnerable people in our community. I am humbled by the board’s vote of confidence and look forward to working with the committed staff and volunteers as together we collaborate with others in service to people in need.”

Originally a service of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in downtown Atlanta, Crossroads Community Ministries is today an independent nonprofit with broad support from many stakeholders. In 2015 alone, Crossroads:

    ·         Served over 4,200 homeless persons, almost half of whom were women and children

    ·         Provided 60,000 meals from Clyde’s Kitchen, open six days a week

    ·         Secured 6,500 MARTA passes for employment and emergency medical purposes

    ·         Provided mailing addresses and state I.D.s or birth certificates to nearly 3,500 guests.

The search for Crossroads’ Executive Director encompassed over 100 area leaders, many with direct experience serving the disadvantaged. Noted Board Chair Vason, “After several rounds of interviews with a number of highly interesting candidates, the eight-person search committee unanimously concluded that Tony Johns combined just the right blend of experience, passion and ministerial grounding to help lead our organization to even greater impact in service to our guests and to the larger community.” Johns joins Crossroads with significant experience in operations, fundraising and program management gained within a variety of nonprofit and faith-based organizations in Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, California and Utah, many of which serve the needs of the homeless. Over the past seven years with City of Refuge in northwest Atlanta, Johns has been Director of Community Involvement, Chief Development Officer and, most recently, Chief Operating Officer.

An active volunteer himself, Tony Johns currently serves on the Board of Directors of Bright Futures Atlanta. Previous roles include his chairmanship of The Refuge Community Centre in Cleveland, TN, service on The Employment Council for the United Way Regional Commission on Homelessness in metro Atlanta, and his participation on the Advisory Board of “Smart & Secure Children Parenting for Parent Leaders” for the Satcher Health Leadership Institute of Morehouse School of Medicine. In 2011 he was honored as the alumnus of the year by his alma mater, Pentecostal Theological Seminary.

A native of Cleveland, Tennessee, Johns is an ordained minister with the Church of God. He, his wife Angela and their two children reside in Douglasville.

Johns succeeds Crossroads’ long-time Executive Director, Stan Dawson, who retired in December 2015 after over 16 years of service to the mission.

The Homeless in Florida Defy All Odds

    [ad_1]

It has been a long and rugged road, but the homeless proved that they could help each other since 2008. They have helped pioneer many new methods that are working. The numbers in rural America continue to increase. The Mission in Citrus has helped lead the way in innovative projects that work to reduce the numbers. They have just reached a 73% employment rate , which is unheard of for shelters in the US. After deducting children in the women’s house, the rate is 90%. They have reason to be proud.

    Press Release

    May 25, 2016

Many said that it could not be done, but they have shown that it could be done, when given the proper resources. They have come a long way in the past eight years, from over 60 tents to the three shelters that are operated today. Including a Veteran’s shelter that opened in 2010. There were no high paid staff or administration expenses, other than the office supplies, leases, and other bills that were needed to operate. They have received awards from Great Nonprofits, the Guide Star Seal for transparency and many others over the past three years, and have more positive reviews than many other charities around the United States.

Thousands have been helped by learning to stretch a dime into a dollar. The foundation for the Mission in Citrus and the rules and regulations that they still follow, were set up by their homeless founder and six other homeless people. It has been a long struggle, but their faith in God helped them to make it through many tough times. While they live by faith, no one is forced to pray or go to church. Most of them do on their own. Veteran’s fought for that right. The Mission in Citrus Inc. was founded in 2008, after their founder became homeless himself, and found that traditional shelters were not working, or addressing the needs of Veterans.Veterans fought for the rights of all, including themselves. The Founder felt that no one should lose those rights by becoming homeless.

The Homeless are helping each other when given the proper resources.

    James M Sleighter, Founder

They have been pioneers since the start, and have shown that most of the homeless Veteran’s problem can be greatly reduced. Thanks to a state grant, they now have three paid staff. But there is far more to be done. They are only limited by funding. Grants are used for specific projects and cannot be used towards operational costs. The huge increase in homeless Veterans has strained their resources. They are hoping Congress will quickly act as many are disabled and in need of additional help. While they are trying to help more Veterans, they forget about the shelters that keep them off the streets and keep them safe.

The Mission in Citrus has a very high success rate, due to offering a hand up and not a handout. And who better to help the homeless, then those who been there and have the knowledge to help others succeed. There have been many imitators, but the Mission in Citrus is the real deal…

The Mission in Citrus is pushing on harder to reduce homelessness. They would like to thank all that have made it possible.

Harvest Snaps and Table for Two Reunite to Fight Obesity and Hunger With Students – Snappy Idea for Giving Back

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    May 12, 2016

Harvest Snaps and TABLE FOR TWO (TFT) are rejoining their efforts to address both obesity and hunger. From April through November, over 100 elementary, middle and high schools nationwide are expected to participate in this unique program that provides a healthy bite for all involved. Students will receive better-for-you snacks of Harvest Snaps Snapea Crisps donated by Harvest Snaps, and for each snack distributed Harvest Snaps will donate an additional 25 cents to TFT to provide healthy school meals for children in need in East Africa and our local communities. With a simple act of snacking on Harvest Snaps Snapea Crisps students enable another child to receive a vitally important and nutritious school meal.

Harvest Snaps and TFT aim to elevate awareness of children’s obesity and hunger in their “Snappy Idea for Giving Back” campaign. One of the participating schools, Community School of Naples in Florida, has over 800 children excited to participate in the program. During a school assembly, their students gave a presentation about world hunger and obesity issues, how the Giving Back program works and what kind of school meals can be provided to children in Africa.

“As one of the participating schools, we are extremely thrilled to provide a great educational opportunity to our students. They can learn about world critical issues and most importantly, they can take a step towards the solution in a very creative and fun way.”

Parthena Draggett, World Language Department Chair, Community School of Naples

“As one of the participating schools, we are extremely thrilled to provide a great educational opportunity to our students. They can learn about world critical issues and most importantly, they can take a step towards the solution in a very creative and fun way,” said Parthena Draggett, World Language Department Chair of Community School of Naples.

In addition, Harvest Snaps and TFT aim to raise enough donated funds to provide over 80,000 school meals to African children in Rwanda, Tanzania and Ethiopia and simultaneously to local communities in the US. In Africa, the 25 cents from the program funds one school meal to each child, and in the US it facilitates school meal upgrades for healthier options in low-income neighborhood districts.

“We are very excited about launching our Giving Back campaign again this year. Over 50 participating schools last year gave really positive feedback, so we decided to expand the program to enable more schools to be part of it. Thanks to Harvest Snaps, students can make a difference by doing good for themselves and eating a healthier snack” said Mayumi Uejima-Carr, Co-President of TFT. “Among seven billion people in the world, one billion suffer from hunger, while one billion people are overweight or obese. What better way to learn than to take action toward these critical issues.”

Harvest Snaps provides snack enthusiasts with a tasty, crunchy, green pea snack that offers necessary nutrients to help growing bodies and minds like plant-based protein, fiber, vitamin B, calcium, iron, and potassium. “We are proud to continue working on the obesity and hunger issues stateside and internationally,” said Angelica Lasley, Harvest Snaps Brand Marketing Manager. “We specifically choose to work with TFT because of their unique method of educating and empowering local children to make healthier snacking choices while making a positive difference in a needy child’s life both in the US and in Africa. ”

TABLE FOR TWO USA (TFT-USA) is a 501(C)(3) organization that addresses the opposite issues of hunger and obesity through a unique meal-sharing program. TFT-USA partners with corporations, restaurants, schools and other food establishments to serve healthy, low-calorie, TFT- branded meals. For each one of these healthy meals served, $0.25 is donated to provide one school lunch for a student in need. It is in this way that TFT-USA has served healthy meals to both sides of the “table” and helped to right the global food imbalance. For more information about TFT-USA, visit usa.tablefor2.org
