    Pathways for Prosperity: Commission on Technology and Inclusive Development was launched in Nairobi to discuss the need for a global conversation on the role of technology in driving progress and inclusion in developing countries.

    The new commission will provide evidence and analysis, along with concrete policy recommendations, to help developing country governments navigate this rapidly evolving landscape and will be led by the Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University.

    The new technologies include the use of artificial intelligence (AI), automation, robotics, nanotechnology among others, which will be used to spur inclusive growth and effective governance. The new commission will find what technology can do for jobs and economic opportunities in developing countries. The commission will also investigate how emerging technologies can be harnessed for use in the poorest countries to tackle problems and enhance economic opportunities.

    The commission will examine how emerging technologies like automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence will disrupt job creation, the geography of value chains, and economic growth. The hope is the $5 million study will foster inclusivity and provide recommendations to governments to spur innovation and help reduce the fear around digitation and machine learning.

    In addition to their standard, two-day UAVs for Public Safety training class, 2018 will bring five new training courses to Skyfire’s industry-leading catalog. These courses include Basic UAV Maintenance and Repair, in-depth scenario-based training, focused seminars on the ins and outs of UAV apps, thermal imaging, and accident reconstruction.

    Skyfire will debut much of this new training at the second annual Skyfire Conference, taking place Feb. 28 – March 2 at Canyon of the Eagles Resort, and the Reveille Peak Ranch in Burnet, Texas.

    The conference offers both the two-day drone basics class for agencies who need initial training, and an intensive three-day, scenario-based training class, centered around live fire burns, accident reconstruction scenarios, and search and rescue missions.

    Indigenous Dayak palm oil farmers in Sarawak state of Malaysia launched a photo campaign today to tell their side of the story on palm oil. The campaign was created to present the facts on palm oil from the indigenous farmers perspective. The organizers of the campaign, Dayak Oil Palm Planters Association of Sarawak (DOPPA) is a unique entity globally as it is the only organized group to represent the interests of indigenous small holders in the palm oil industry.

    DOPPA, hopes the project will clarify once and for all, that not all palm oil causes environmental destruction and human rights abuses. Speaking in reference to a call by 174 scientists against the use of palm oil in bio-fuels which argued that palm oil causes socio-environmental disasters without exception, Vice-President of DOPPA, Rita Insol, stated:

    But today we speak for ourselves as we have noticed other NGOs who are threatening our livelihoods when they attack palm oil which we rely on heavily as a cash crop to enable us to enjoy the same standards of living as these NGOs.

    “We are small farmers. We work on lands passed down to us by our forefathers who have cultivated these lands for decades. Some of us have lost our lands which we used for shifting cultivation. So as we enter the 21st century, we recognize the need to create stable and permanent farms from which we hope to better our livelihoods and provide a better future for the coming generations of indigenous people in Sarawak.

    ”For years, we have noticed the conflicting news on palm oil. It was a source of amusement to see ‘experts’ arguing about our rights as indigenous peoples as if we could not speak ourselves. This is not true. We, as indigenous peoples of Borneo have fought for our rights for a long time already. You may not have heard about our struggles to have our rights as indigenous peoples recognized and for that, we are grateful to the NGOs for speaking on our behalf here and there. But today we speak for ourselves as we have noticed other NGOs who are threatening our livelihoods when they attack palm oil which we rely on heavily as a cash crop to enable us to enjoy the same standards of living as these NGOs.

    ”Our parents fought alongside the Australian and British soldiers to protect our lands. We remain always grateful to these countries for helping us to preserve our lands. We remain especially grateful to the United Kingdom for their guidance of the development of Sarawak. The palm oil tree which was introduced to Sarawak by the British government in the 1960s as a pathway towards self-sustenance has proven itself.

    ”As indigenous peoples of Borneo and farmers in the 21st century, we are now finally able to fend for ourselves on the lands our parents fought to protect alongside the Australian and British soldiers. Many of us grow rice, fruits and vegetables on our indigenous lands for survival and depend on the cash sales from palm oil fruits to buy what we cannot grow. Our palm oil trees empower us as indigenous peoples.

    ”We hope with this campaign, to deliver a message to those that are against palm oil, to tell these people that we are indigenous peoples and your discrimination against palm oil is hurting us.”

    Note to Editors. DOPPA is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2015 to represent the indigenous palm oil farmers in Sarawak state, Malaysia. Based on data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) which issues licenses and regulates to all palm oil production in Malaysia, there are 28,000 indigenous palm oil farmers out of the total of 36,000 registered smallholders in Sarawak state. Estimated acreage of palm oil farms cultivated by indigenous peoples in Sarawak state is under 100,000 hectares. Their harvests are an integral supply to the Malaysian palm oil production which is working towards national sustainability certification by 2020 under the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) scheme. The MPOB has allocated funds to assist smallholders by paying fully towards the costs of upgrading their farms to meet certification criteria.

    DOPPA expects to register all Dayak smallholders and have them certified under the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil scheme (MSPO) by 2020. The driving force for the certification of all smallholders under the MSPO is the MSPO requirement to be certified or lose their license to grow palm oil. Palm oil production in Malaysia is heavily regulated by state and federal laws from all aspects including the planting of high yielding species to the employment standards of workers. These practices have been in place but is only now being documented to meet the demands for sustainability and traceability by buyer countries especially those from developed countries.

    Photos included show Dayak palm oil farmers from Sarawak, Malaysia. These belong to the Iban tribes which form the majority of lowland tribes in Sarawak. The word “ak” in between names is the traditional way of naming Ibans to keep their lineage. Example: Ludai ak Manggat means Ludai, child of Manggat.

    The two crops have been produced on land taken from illegal coca plantations in the valleys of the Amazon and Sierra del Peru.

    “This is a success story,” said Peru’s ambassador to the United States Carlos Pareja. “It’s a battle where the cocoa is defeating coca, where coffee is pushing back the illegal coca crops.”

    According to the Peruvian diplomat, the policy of crop substitution undertaken by the government of Peru, within the framework of Peruvian cooperation in the fight against illicit drug trafficking, “is paying off” thanks to a strategic alliance of cooperation between USAID, DEVIDA and the local governments of the coca-growing areas.

    For her part, the Minister of Women and Vulnerable Populations Ana Maria Choquehuanca, who is in Washington, D.C., to participate in a special session of the Permanent Council of the OAS, said that the substitution of crops demonstrates the government’s commitment to advance in the eradication of drug trafficking, on the eve of the bicentennial of the independence of Peru.

    “We are accompanied by seven mayors and an alderman from the regions of Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Junín, Huánuco, Pasco and Piura, and all of them have come to testify that it is possible to defeat drug trafficking by promoting effective policies to replace crops that restore their dignity to the affected populations and that improve their income levels,” said Alfonso Velásquez, executive president of Sierra y Selva Exportadora del Perú.

    The Peruvian coffee and chocolate tasting event was attended by a dozen prominent U.S. Congressmen, many of them members of the U.S. Congressional Caucus on Peru, an association of U.S. legislators aimed at promoting bilateral relations between the peoples of the United States and Peru, as well as between their respective governments.

    “From the U.S. Congress, we can help Peruvian farmers grow coffee and cocoa instead of coca,” said Utah Republican Representative Chris Stewart. “We are going to promote all our efforts so that it continues to be a success story.”  

    For his part, Congressman Gregory Meeks, Democratic Representative for New York, invited attendees to demand in the U.S. supermarkets “coffee and chocolates from Peru,” because they are part of the excellent tradition of Peruvian cuisine. “Some of the best restaurants in the world are in Peru,” he explained. Meeks once again invited attendees to visit Peru “where there are wonderful places to explore.” 

    Congressman Paul Cook (R-CA), president of the Western Hemisphere subcommittee of the Foreign Relations Committee; Albio Sires (D-NJ), leader of the Democratic minority in the Western Hemisphere’s subcommittee of the Foreign Relations Committee; as well as Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), David Price (D-NC) and Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD) of the Appropriations Committee, also attended the event.

    Also present were Robin Kelly (D-IL), member of the Foreign Relations Committee, as well as Congressman Tim Walberg (R-MI), Congresswoman Grace Napolitano (D-CA) and former Congressman Baron Hill.

    The “Coffee and Cacao Day in the United States Congress” was organized by the Peruvian Embassy in the United States and Sierra y Selva Exportadora del Perú. The purpose of the event was to demonstrate the success of the policy of replacing crops to eradicate the illegal production of coca leaf in Peru and also to find new export markets for both products.

    ​For nearly four years, the only option for over 13,000 Vinton County residents to buy fresh produce, meat, dairy and other healthy foods was to travel many miles to another county.  That obstacle has been remedied by yesterday morning’s long-awaited grand opening of Campbell’s Market, a new full-service grocery store located at 630 W. Main Street in McArthur, Ohio.

    The new store is the result of a collaborative effort among many partners, including local community members,  the Campbell family, Finance Fund Capital Corporation (FCAP) and representatives from local, state, and federal governments.  FCAP, a statewide community development financing institution, provided funding for the project through its Healthy Food for Ohio (HFFO) program.  The HFFO program is Ohio’s first ever statewide healthy food financing program and provides flexible financing to eligible rural and urban healthy food retail projects in low-income, underserved areas throughout the state. Through this program, Campbell’s Market received nearly $1.6 million to build the 12,000 sq. ft. full-service grocery store. The store has already attracted additional businesses, created over 30 jobs for local residents and is improving the quality of life for this community.  

    Today, we get to declare the food desert in Vinton County over!

    “Since your last seminar on honesty, church attendance has doubled,” wrote a Pentecostal pastor to Daniel, a Scientology Volunteer Minister from Western Kenya. “There were no absentees at the Sunday service, which was a trend before the seminar.”

    The seminar he describes was in conflict resolution, presented to parishioners of the pastor’s church in the village of Seme. One parishioner told the pastor that he used what he learned to help him restore harmony with family members and neighbors.

    These are the kind of stories that keep Daniel traveling from village to village throughout Kenya, sharing the Volunteer Minister technology developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard.

    In an article published in Freedom Magazine, Daniel shared how he became a Volunteer Minister. Personal hardships in his childhood awakened him to the benevolence of others. A fire at the milling company where his father worked destroyed nearly 20 homes. “I was affected by the help my family and others received when this happened from good Samaritans and volunteers,” he said.

    After completing his studies, Daniel took on managing a business school, but he became discouraged by some of his students’ inability to learn.

    At the same time, he and his wife Margaret were having trouble in their marriage. “We differed on almost every subject, from family finance to parenting,” he said.

    When he discovered the Scientology website, he became fascinated by Study Technology developed by Mr. Hubbard and took the online course in the subject. “I wanted to save my students and improve myself as well as my business and marriage by knowing how to know,” Daniel says.

    The magazine describes how he was so impressed by the free course on that subject that he completed all 19 online courses, each on a different aspect life. These courses form the basis of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers (VM) program. His wife completed the courses too and they both share this information with anyone who wants to learn to improve their lives.

    The week after his “Honesty and Integrity” seminar at the Pentecostal church in Seme, 90 people showed up for Sunday service to attend church and take part in the next seminar. Every seat in the church was filled and 15 people stood outside, straining to hear. Local residents were surprised to see four widows among the crowd. It seems that in the culture of the Luo people, a prominent ethnic group in the region, when a woman loses her husband, she also loses her rights. She is not permitted to attend to her farm, greet anyone with a handshake or participate in the life of the village. What these women learned at the first seminar gave them the courage to resolve to overcome suppression and be active members of the church.

    Daniel has also taken on training other Volunteer Ministers, one of whom presented a seminar to a group of people with disabilities in the village of Yiro. Life for a disabled person is hard in the region. Most of them live in poverty, have to be carried wherever they go as they don’t possess wheelchairs, and depend on begging to survive. The chairman of the group is a banana farmer who now wants to use the technology of the Volunteer Ministers Targets and Goals Course to make his farm prosper so he can help raise the standard of living for himself and his fellow group members.

    Daniel intends to continue his work and expand it to more villages in the region. “I have come to enjoy working as a Volunteer Minister and restoring spiritual values to my fellow human beings,” he says.

    What we are looking to study and why

    The MigraineBuds community is interested and keen to participate in clinical research that will help to demonstrate the efficacy of cannabis in the treatment of migraine. The proposed study will also examine the effect cannabis may have on MOH.

    The Canadian Institute for Medical Advancement, a research organization, has agreed to help conduct the study. Accordingly, Dr. Sana-Ara Ahmed, a clinical Anesthesiologist & Chronic Pain Specialist, has agreed to participate in the research study. Dr. Ahmed is an advocate for chronic migraine pain patients and treats numerous patients at her clinic The Health Boutique™. Dr. Ahmed is a specialist and educator in the use of medical cannabis for chronic pain, including migraines, and advocates the use of cannabis as an effective method of treatment.

    The probability of a messy Brexit has increased but is not enough to prevent the Bank of England from hiking rates for the first time in 10 years. According to a survey by Shanghai, China- based wealth management firm, Harvey Blackwood, economists believe that a rate increase would be a grave mistake.

    According to economists, there is now a 30 percent chance that the UK will exit the EU without any trade deal when negotiations spanning two-years reach their conclusion in March of 2019. This figure is up 5 percent from a survey of economists conducted by Harvey Blackwood in September.

    Economists at Harvey Blackwood believe that it is in the interests of all parties to come to an agreement regarding the terms of Brexit by 2019.

    Theresa May, Britain’s Prime Minister, gained some traction last week when EU officials indicated that they were ready to push forward with discussion in the coming months.

    According to the vast majority of economists surveyed by Harvey Blackwood, the most probable result of the Brexit negotiations is still a free trade agreement with a possible transitional deal.

    If this is not the case, economists believe the second option is that Britain will likely depart without a deal and will revert back to trading under the basic rules of the World Trade Organization.

    The third option would be that Britain would pay a fee to continue to enjoy unrestricted access to the European Union’s single market but would have no right to contribute to its structural policies.

    The most unlikely option was that the UK would change its choice to depart from the European Union.
