    Remember The Day Before, the once-hyped game that had such a disastrous early access launch that the Singapore-based studio that developed it, Fntastic, announced its closure just days later? Well, Fntastic appears to be back, and they’re asking for a second chance — and your money.

    In yet another bizarre development to what was already a strange saga, the X/Twitter account for Fntastic resurfaced today, announcing a Kickstarter campaign and asking for “your help again to bring Fntastic back.” The post links to a website which claims to lay out the details for Fntastic’s next moves.

    If your first thought is that this whole thing could be a hoax, you’d be forgiven — and frankly, it very well could be. But if it is, it’s a pretty elaborate troll, as the website is extensive. It includes an FAQ, a PDF detailing its “recovery plan,” contact info, a merch page, and more. It also links to a Discord server which has mods claiming to be Fntastic devs and a bevy of confused onlookers.

    What’s more, the website even includes details and links to a new multiplayer co-op game, Escape Factory. A free demo is currently available via its Steam page, and a Kickstarter page is looking to raise $15,535 to bring the game to fruition. As of press time, the campaign has raised $139 from three backers. The YouTube account for Fntastic, which was scrubbed shortly before The Day Before’s launch, also posted a trailer for Escape Factory.

    According to the FAQ section of the website, if Escape Factory does not reach its Kickstarter goal, the studio won’t be able to return.

    If the whole thing seems a little tone-deaf after the disaster that was The Day Before, the website claiming to be Fntastic at least acknowledges that it might have some trouble regaining consumers’ trust. The website says they “deeply apologize to everyone for The Day Before and take full responsibility for what happened.”

    “After the closure, we reflected on our past mistakes and initiated significant internal changes to drive radical improvement,” the site’s FAQ page reads. “We’ve discontinued the practice of involving external volunteers and are now fully committed to a more professional approach. Honesty, transparency, and community engagement have become our top priorities.”

    In terms of who is apparently on the current team, the website admits that it’s “smaller, but it still consists of the same people who created all of our previous games.” Interestingly, the website makes no mention of Fntastic founders Eduard Gotovtsev and Aisen Gotovtsev, not even in its “About Us” section that chronicles the studio’s history.

    “Honesty, transparency, and community engagement have become our top priorities.”

    The website adds that Fntastic has lost all legal rights to both The Day Before and Propnight, another game developed by the studio before its closure, and elaborates further on some of the things it’s learned from The Day Before debacle.

    “Over time, we’ve analyzed the factors that led to The Day Before’s unsuccessful launch,” the website reads. “These included overly ambitious goals on a low indie budget, a team without AAA tech experience, and embellished marketing, which we deeply regret.”

    The X/Twitter account for Fntastic has been replying to concerned onlookers ever since the first announcement, as many are, understandably, a little hesitant to trust the studio (if this even is the studio).

    Fntastic had a tumultous development cycle for The Day Before leading up to its tumultuous launch. The first trailer debuted back in 2021, gaining traction for what looked to be an exciting post-apocalyptic open world MMO. Hype gave way to skepticism, however, amid controversy over the studio’s use of unpaid volunteers, various delays, a trademark dispute, and a fan revolt that accused the whole thing of being a scam.

    It all led up to The Day Before’s early access launch in December 2023, and once fans were able to finally get their hands on the game, the response was so overwhelmingly negative (even IGN gave it a rare 1/10) that the servers shut down just over a month later. Refunds were distributed to all who purchased The Day Before, with Fntastic telling one player, “This was our first big experience. Sh*t happens.”

    Still, the website saying it’s Fntastic is adamant that the team has learned from its mistakes, stating that its core principles are now “honesty, transparency, and professionalism.”

    IGN has reached out to Eduard Gotovtsev and Aisen Gotovtsev, as well as a previous email address for Fntastic, for clarification on the legitimacy of the website, and has not heard back yet. We’ll update this story if and when we do.

    When you turn on your Xbox Series X, open the Microsoft Store, and buy Farming Simulator 22, you might think you own the game, but you’d be wrong. You actually paid for a license to play the game — not to own it. Companies can revoke the license at any time. It doesn’t happen all too often, but it does happen, especially with older games: Ubisoft made headlines earlier this year when delisted racing game The Crew in December, took its servers offline, then started to pull licenses to the game. Licensing vs. actually owning a game becomes an issue, once again, when you consider where your games go when you die — you can’t technically pass your license along to another person, per many companies’ policies.

    A new California bill (AB 2426), signed into law by governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday, is an attempt to bring transparency to the buying and selling of digital goods like movies, e-books, and, yes, video games. California assemblymember Jacqui Irwin introduced the bill, in part, after hearing about Ubisoft’s move with The Crew. The bill won’t change the fact that we’re all licensing games instead of actually owning them, but it will force companies that operate in California to be more transparent about it. Companies and storefronts that would have to comply include Microsoft with the Microsoft Store, Valve with Steam, Sony with the PlayStation Store, Nintendo with its eShop, and publishers with their own stores, like Ubisoft’s Ubisoft Store.

    Polygon has reached out to all previously listed companies but did not hear back by publication time.

    The law is expected to go into effect on Jan. 1, preventing companies that operate digital storefronts from using words like “purchase” or “buy” unless the company is clear that it’s selling licenses, not “unrestricted ownership interest in the digital good.” This notice will have to be “distinct and separate” from other terms and conditions of the purchase, according to the bill. The law doesn’t apply to subscription-based services, free downloads like demos, or companies that offer “permanent offline download[s]” of digital goods. Companies will be fined for breaking the rules.

    “By sending AB 2426 to Governor Newsom, California is now the first state to recognize that when digital media retailers use terms like ‘buy’ and ‘purchase’ to advertise digital media licenses, they are engaged in false advertising,” University of Michigan professor Aaron Perzanowski said in a news release from Irwin. “Consumers around the world deserve to understand that when they spend money on digital movies, music, books, and games, those so-called ‘purchases’ can disappear without notice. There is still important work to do in securing consumers’ digital rights, but AB 2426 is a crucial step in the right direction.”

    Digital purchasing is already ubiquitous, as physical media becomes less easy to find. Stores like Best Buy have stopped selling physical movies as a whole, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see more retailers follow. Physical video games use the disc as a license, and that disk is yours. But a company could still take servers offline, for instance — access still isn’t guaranteed.

    Everyone saw this coming but it was still disappointing to see. Fans were salivating over the 30th Anniversary PlayStation 5 collection, a one-two punch of nostalgia and neat aesthetics, when it was revealed earlier this month. Today many of them stared blankly at PlayStation Direct pre-order screens as they watched them sellout while they waited in confusing online queues and battled glitched website buttons.

    The 30th Anniversary collection went up for pre-order earlier today and it turns out the limited edition PS5 Pro bundle, only 12,300 of which were manufactured, wasn’t the only thing that felt impossible to get. Pre-orders for the PS1-style PS5 slim bundle, PS Portal, and DualSense controller also disappeared almost immediately, begging the eternal question of why Sony doesn’t just manufacture as many of these items as people want.

    Panic began overnight when anecdotes began pouring in from Australia and the UK that pre-orders, which became available at 10:00 a.m. local time in each region, began to immediately disappear followed by reseller listings popping up on eBay for anywhere from five to 10 times the suggested retail price. As the 30th Anniversary pre-order hour approached in the U.S., people tried to load the PlayStation Direct page early only to be thrown into a queue with estimated wait times of over an hour.

    The initial confusion was compounded by the fact that Sony never really gave fans a clear idea of what to expect from the pre-order process. After unveiling the 30th Anniversary PS5 collection it just said they would be available to buy starting September 26 with no advance notice of an official start time or even the prices. Essentially how it worked is that people who tried to order from PlayStation Direct were put in a waiting room to get a random spot in line at which point they could order whatever was still left, which for most people, including myself, seemed to be nothing.

    Was that because I didn’t get into the waiting room sooner? Or did I just get a bad place in the queue? Was there a better way to go about this whole thing? There were anecdotal reports of people getting to the store only to be tossed back into the waiting room. Once they were in the store, it was still confusing trying to buy stuff. Even items that didn’t show as sold out, like the PS1 DualSense controller, couldn’t be purchased when clicking “add to cart.”

    It seems like people who just wanted the $80 controller actually had more luck going through retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and GameStop, whose pre-orders for the PS5 controllers when up at the same time as PlayStation Direct. Those sold out fairly quickly as well, however. It’s possible that additional stock will be released in waves, as Sony did when demand blew supply out of the water with the original launch of the PS5. But I’m also not sure why Sony doesn’t just try to sell as many of the PS1-style controllers as possible, at least for those who order in the next couple of months.

    It’s the cheapest option for fans wanting to be a part of the anniversary hype, or just really love the idea of channeling all those nights they spent in front of their original PS1 in the modern era. Maybe Sony was just testing the initial demand and will come back later with a bottomless Santa Claus bag of 30th Anniversary PS5 stuff come the holiday. If not, 30th Anniversary PS5 DualSense controllers are already going for up to $200 on eBay.

    It’s been a little while since Fallout: London last got a fresh patch, but Team FOLON’s now offered an update explaining what it’s been working on with regards to Patch 1.02. Long story short, some extra help’s been drafted in to help improve how it performs, and you shoudn’t have to wait too much longer to check the fixes out in-game.

    If you’ve not already, Fallout: London is well worth checking out for its fun take on post-apocalyptic British culture, as well as the fact it’s a damn good Fallout game in its own right, when it’s playing ball bug-wise.

    “For those eagerly awaiting news about the upcoming patch, we’re happy to share that it should be out before [London MCM] Comic Con,” project manager Dean ‘Prilladog’ Carter, wrote in a fresh post on Fallout: London’s Discord server.

    “We know we said it’d be soon and yes it’s taken a little longer than expected, but it’s for a good reason – we’ve brought in some external help to improve performance, facegen data, and LOD and it took awhile to get them up to speed, but *wow* the difference,” he continued, “This update (and accompanying video) will offer HUGE improvements and we’re glad we held off to ensure all these enhancements are included in one patch!”

    If you want a sneak peek of the coming changes, the team also provided a link a Google speadsheet you can check out that details the stuff it’s been and still is working on.

    The headlines include some changes to LOD clip volumes that should help limit save file corruption issues for those visiting Islington or St Paul’s Cathedral, and some precombine regeneration that should “fix various random/repeatable crashes”. There are also a absolute ton of fixes for quests, including one that should stop you being unable to find the calling card during ‘Lay of the Land’, one of the issues I had to console command my way around during my Fallout: London review playthrough.

    Gameplay tweaks are also plentiful, including one that’ll stop you from accidentally ending up in the Bank of England prior to discovering it due to sleepwalker trait, and one that’ll make the messages you get about the afflictions you end up with at the start of the game use accurate percentages. Thewre are a whole bunch of item and NPC tweaks too, including one that’ll mean you can no longer eat Atkins robots due to being a cannibal. To be fair they probably don’t taste nice.

    With London MCM Comic Con – which Team FOLON’ll be attending – set to kick off on October 25, if the modders are able to stick to their current plans, you shoudn’t have to wait that much longer for this patch to drop.

    When it comes to realizing the ultimate power fantasy, nothing quite comes close to the 1v1,000 combat that the Dynasty Warriors series delivers. Take your pick of a general, get onto the battlefield, and eliminate all that stand in your way – it’s always a satisfying ride. However, the series has undergone some recent changes, and going into a hands-on session of Dynasty Warriors: Origins at Tokyo Game Show 2024, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect.

    What Omega Force and Koei Tecmo have put together is a refreshed formula that retains that classic feel of the series, but infused with new but meaningful changes to help enhance your enjoyment on the battlefield. As part of the demo, it was time to take on the Battle of Sishui Gate against the forces of Dong Zhuo, and taking down his leading generals, Li Jue and Hua Xiong, meaning I was in for a tough fight.

    Playing as the Wanderer, whose place in the overall narrative is still something to be discovered by players, you have the freedom to choose from all sorts of weapons that suit your play style. Depending on your chosen companion, the starting positions will differ, too.

    Satisfied with my choices, it was time to let loose the dogs of war. While seeing swarms of enemies on screen is a common sight, Dynasty Warriors: Origins has upped the ante in both number and visual fidelity. It is no Space Marine 2, but it is still the most impressive showing for the series yet.

    Plenty of enemy soldiers fell as I got to grips with the more familiar combo system of differing button presses, while more powerful Battle Arts moves can be unleashed once you have built up enough of your special meter, further adding more power to your attacks.

    This comes in handy the most when facing the more formidable generals, who have gotten an upgrade as well even on the easier difficulties. While they used to be trampled with ease, players need to take in mind the new Fortitude system, which acts as their additional layer of defense against your attacks. Only with smart timing and perfect parries will you be effective in reducing their Fortitude, opening them up for sustained punishment. These generals can unleash special attacks of their own, so knowing when to counter or dodge will ensure you live to fight another day.

    Between smashing the countless soldiers and engaging in tougher fights against enemy generals, it is clear that the moment-to-moment gameplay is more engaging than ever before. Furthermore, there are tactical elements at play as well, with the Wanderer’s personal guard capable of carrying out specific orders like charging, shooting volleys of arrows, or encircling an enemy when you call for it.

    This was prominently displayed as the final battle drew near, with Hua Xiong and Li Jue making their last stand at Sishui Gate. As the allies charged down toward their foes, so did my guards and the Wanderer, allowing for more visceral combat and the use of the aforementioned tactics. It can be very overwhelming to the uninitiated, but for a fan, this is truly the peak of the series thus far.

    It doesn’t take long for the enemies to feel the sharp blade of our forces, and Hua Xiong challenges the Wanderer to a duel, showcasing another new feature in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. A solo fight between an immensely powerful foe, it becomes a more daunting affair as both sides look on. Knowing when to press the advantage or to back off, timing your blocks and dodges, it is all key to coming out on top. That sense of triumph when dealing that finishing blow is something that I hope to relive over and over again in the story, which is always a good sign.

    As victory drew near, the enemy tried to turn the tide with one final push, and together with my companion Guan Yu, it was time to finally witness the sheer power of the Musou moves. Just like everything else, this showstopping move remains a sight to behold, made even better with this new iteration as tons of enemies get decimated in an instant, and those close-up, slo-mo shots of your heroes only add to the excitement.

    Just as I thought things were over, cue the arrival of everyone’s favorite adversary, Lu Bu. Many have tried and failed, and given that he possessed a large pool of Fortitude, this was certainly not the time and place to snatch victory from the demon. Yet, I very much look forward to the rematch in just a few months, and any fans of the Dynasty Warriors series should as well.

    Dynasty Warriors: Origins will be released on January 17, 2025, on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.

    The Like a Dragon series has never shied away from the ridiculous, even in its early days, but not even the most ardent of fans would have expected something like Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. A spin-off starring Goro Majima that takes place after Infinite Wealth, players will be diving into high-sea shenanigans and trying to help the anti-hero get back on his feet again after losing his memory.

    While the details of that narrative will be something that will take the spotlight when the game is out in the wild, the time I had with the game at Tokyo Game Show was all about showing off the various activities and areas that will likely suck up all your time once more.

    After getting our hands dirty learning about Majima’s Sea Dog and Mad Dog fighting styles, which are even crazier than before, I had 30 minutes to do whatever I wanted as a new pirate captain. That meant belting out a few tunes in karaoke, dishing out food with Crazy Delivery, or racing Mario Kart-style with Dragon Kart. Using the Segway is still hilarious, especially with the young Noah having his own mini version, and the random battles and Most Wanted encounters give you plenty of opportunities to show off your combat skills.

    It is vintage Like a Dragon, but with a distinctly Majima flavor, and that is a good thing as fans have been clamoring for more of the character with each new entry. While this may not be a full-fledged mainline adventure, it is still something to treasure and behold, simply because Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio continues to be very good at what they do.

    This is obvious when looking at Madlantis, a true pirate playground similar to the Castle in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, but with more emphasis on the piracy theme. With the shiny lights and the very fact it’s built into a shipwreck, one can already imagine the sheer breadth of things that can be done during your time here. Although it wasn’t possible to fully explore what this place has to offer, the teases show plenty of promise for Majima in this particular adventure, with combat rightfully being the main attraction.

    Gone is the turn-based formula of recent times, and it’s back to the fast-moving combo sequences that typified early Like a Dragon games. In Mad Dog style, it is always entertaining to see Majima go to town on his foes and build up that Madness Gauge, before summoning his doppelgangers to finish the fight with a flashy spinning attack. Yet, the new Sea Dog style is no slouch either, letting players utilize cutlasses, guns, and his new grappling hook to good measure. By timing your combos well and employing Heat actions, it almost feels like the action-heavy combat never went away.

    That said, it is not to say that Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is reverting back to the classic formula. Instead, it feels like a natural evolution of the modern foundations of the series through the distinct, colorful lens of Goro Majima. It is pure chaos and fun, serving as a companion piece rather than the main event, but with the team’s track record, it is likely to be a substantial offering that will keep fans wanting more. It’s time to set sail.

    Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will be released on February 28, 2025, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

    League of Legends (LoL) Worlds Songs Tier List

    S Tier LoL Worlds Anthems

    RISE – Worlds 2018

    RISE might just be the best and most epic League of Legends Worlds song to date. Plus, its animation is absolutely wild, featuring the greatest players in the world at that time, such as Ambition, Uzi, Perkz, and Faker.

    Warriors – Worlds 2014

    Warriors is probably the most famous of all of LoL’s Worlds anthems. Its legendary animation and lyrics can send the chills down the spines of both veteran and new players, and it’s one of the few songs that you will never get tired of listening to between games.

    GODS – Worlds 2023

    I’m not as big of a fan of NewJeans as Keria, but GODS is the reason I wanted to hear more of their stuff. It was the first Worlds song in years that could come close to the epicness of RISE, both in its video and audio, and it still remains one of the most viewed New Worlds anthems.

    Legends Never Die – Worlds 2017

    2017 was special not only because it was the year Bronze Scrapes was created but because it had one of the most hype Worlds anthems ever, Legends Never Die. However, it falls a bit short of RISE and Warriors.

    A Tier LoL Worlds Anthems

    Burn It All Down – Worlds 2021

    Burn It All Down sounds like a rougher version of Phoenix, with lyrics that are much more memorable and the animation to match it. At the time of its release, it was arguably the best Worlds anthem animation-wise.

    Take Over – Worlds 2020

    Take Over tried to match the vibe of Warriors and RISE, but it came just short. Still, it came really close and is still among the better new anthems. Plus, its exquisite music video made plenty of us rewatch it multiple times.

    Phoenix – Worlds 2019

    When I think of Phoenix, I remember the pre-game screen right before a game between prime FPX and prime Invictus Gaming, with elimination from Worlds on the line. It wasn’t as hype as the songs before it, but it still remains one of the most loved anthems to date.

    Heavy Is The Crown – Worlds 2024

    Heavy Is The Crown is as epic as Worlds anthems go, though, unlike RISE and Warriors, it takes a more alternative rock route, which is natural considering that Linkin Park made it. The only thing that bothers me is that, for some reason, Linkin Park almost gets more screen time than the players. Faker’s exit from his castle does make up for it, though.

    B Tier LoL Worlds Anthems

    Ignite – Worlds 2016

    Ignite was quite a bit different from the songs before it and those that came right after it in the sense that it lacked epicness and hype. For that reason, it still remains one of the least favorite Worlds songs among fans. Nevertheless, it seems to be a perfect background track for those late-night solo queue grinds.

    Worlds Collide – Worlds 2015

    If you were to play Worlds Collide to ten LoL fans, chances are that at least half of them wouldn’t even know that it was a Worlds anthem. It’s fairly bland and repetitive, and it can hardly hype you up for the next game the way Warriors or RISE can.

    C Tier LoL Worlds Anthems

    STAR WALKIN – Worlds 2022

    STAR WALKIN seems to be the only song on this list that just doesn’t feel like a Worlds anthem. Instead, it sounds like something you’d listen to while working or as part of a sports game’s soundtrack. I don’t know; maybe Riot programmed us to expect a RISE-tier song every year, and now we’ll just be disappointed each time we don’t get one.

    Over 25 years after the first Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver launched, Crystal Dynamics has announced a remaster package collecting the first and second games in the series. The HD ports are the work of Aspyr, the studio responsible for the well-received remasters of the first three Tomb Raider games. The package was unveiled at Sony’s State of Play yesterday, but they’ve now been confirmed for PC.

    Until recently the original versions of these games were available on Steam; they’ve since been removed, presumably to be replaced by their modernised versions. The trailer below shows what to expect: both games still look very much like late ’90s 3D action games, though they’ll enjoy sharper textures, smoother framerates, and upgraded models and visual effects.

    Monster Hunter Wilds: hands-on with the opening missions

    Monster Hunter Wilds, the next entry in the popular hunting action game series is set to release on February 28 on PS5. I had an opportunity to play the Story Quest at the Tokyo Game Show 2024, where I immersed myself in the gameplay from the introduction of the new story to the intense battle against a frog-like amphibian monster, the Chatacabra. 

    Monster chase in Windward Plains

    The Story Quest kicked off with the enjoyable process of creating my character. I had the freedom to customize every detail of the hunter’s appearance and even that of the hunter’s trusted partner, Palico.

    As the story began, I found myself traversing Windward Plains in a sand ship with the Forbidden Lands Research Commission. Through flashbacks you’ll learn how your character became a part of the commission. Suddenly, the scene cut to a nerve-racking chase, where a herd of desert-dwelling Balaharas are in hot pursuit of a girl riding a Seikret. Without a moment of hesitation, I leaped onto a Seikret and gave chase to rescue the girl.

    During this chase scene my Seikret was on autopilot to catch up to the girl. However, with some freedom to control the camera view and my ridable partner, I immersed myself in the action as I jumped over boulders and slalomed through the air to close the distance.

    When I finally caught up to the girl, it was my turn to be pursued by the hordes of formidable Balaharas in a heart-pounding chase. They were relentless, closing in on us from every possible direction as I dashed through the desert, attacking them with my slinger to fire sonic bombs.

    Seikret joy ride

    Upon discovering that the young girl was separated from her brother, the hunter decided to find him. To gain more insight before embarking on the mission, I sought the advice of the Handler, Alma. She gave me a valuable recommendation on which one of all 14 available weapons I should take on the journey.

    Luckily, the girl’s Seikret remembered the scent of her missing brother so it knew exactly where to go. Though I was guided to the location automatically, having complete control over the Seikret’s movements was liberating. I could accelerate and decelerate using the R1 and R2, respectively, while holding them made it dash forward or come to a quick stop. With the left stick, as expected, I guided my mount in the direction I wanted it to go. From time-to-time, I made detours, stopping off at places that grabbed my attention. I even took advantage of the hands-free ride to gather hunting items, materials, and wield my weapon.

    New wound system and SOS flare in the Chatacabra hunt

    Soon after arriving at the locale, a simple mission of searching for the brother quickly escalated to a hunt for a formidable foe as I found the girl’s brother in imminent danger from a Chatacabra’s attack. Leveraging the new wound system, I attacked the same weak point persistently to inflict significant damage. Also new to Monster Hunter Wilds, Focus mode is activated by holding down L2 to display a reticle on the screen for guidance on where to attack, and a red highlight on the monster’s wounds for easier aiming. The ability to change the target point, even during the attack motion, allowed me to effectively attack the weak point despite using a weighty, slow-motion weapon like the Great Sword.

    By pressing R1 in Focus mode, I uncovered the strategic Focus Strike. This special attack works by connecting with a wound or weak point, and it proved to deal massive damage and stun the foe. Undoubtedly one of the most satisfying moments in the game was when I managed to destroy multiple wounds with a single Focus Attack.

    During hunting, you can summon your Siekret by pressing the directional key for swift mounting. Once mounted, I strategically drank a healing potion to restore my health and used a whetstone to sharpen my weapon.

    Another unique feature is the SOS Flare, a tool that calls in aid from NPC support hunters. The monster’s rage is likely to be redirected when other hunters join the fray. This is an excellent way for novice players of this series to divert damage. Although this feature wasn’t available during the offline single-player demo, I learned that you can recruit other players while summoning support hunters while online.

    New stories unfold in the Forbidden Lands

    After defeating the Chatacabra, I hurried back to the camp with the rescued brother. The main mission in the first chapter concluded with the newly reunited siblings sharing tales to catch up.

    The Story Quest was rich in content, from the gripping Balahara chase scene to leveraging the wound system and Focus mode in the challenging hunt for the elusive Chatacabra. As players step into the main mission, I’m convinced new hunters and those about to uncover the series for the first time will find themselves mesmerized by the world that unfolds when Monster Hunter Wilds launches February 28 on PS5.

    All right, everyone. We have made it to Phoenix, Arizona, first time ever. And the current temperature is a brisk 104 degrees Fahrenheit. I am already sweating, and I just stepped out of the terminal. But you know, it’s OK, because I’m going to get to play Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. I cannot wait.

    All right. So we are getting ready to load into the Humvees, as you can see right here, for a tour around the Grand Canyon. It is going to be an amazing day. I cannot wait. Let’s go, baby, let’s go.

    What is going on, everybody? It is Malik Prince, and welcome back to the official Xbox Podcast, a very special edition, as you can tell, because we are not in the studio. We are at the stunningly beautiful Grand Canyon. On November 19, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will arrive. It’s being developed by a team that’s not only giving you a map to fly around in– they’re giving you the entire world, literally, with the most sophisticated, immersive, and awe-inspiring flight simulator of all time.

    Unreal fidelity, improved tech, and of course, the ability to step into the role in a number of aviation careers, such as search and rescue or aerial firefighting or, what I’m most excited about, aerial advertising. You know the little planes that fly over with the signs? I’m excited to do that. So sit back and relax, because with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the sky is not the limit. And we’re going to show you just that.

    All right. So we have stopped again here at the Grand Canyon, just for another vista. You might be able to see a bunch of creators and people in the press who are taking pictures, making videos. Be sure to check out the content that’s out now as well from them.

    The really cool thing about Microsoft Flight Simulator is in the game, the team has done such a great job of providing added detail to the game that you can now land your plane and actually get out and take photos.

    Let’s talk about it. Photo mode is going to go so crazy in this game. It’s like a photo mode of your dreams. So if you’ve ever wanted to do that, you can do that in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

    MALIK PRINCE (VOICEOVER): And then we ran into a rather common inhabitant of the Grand Canyon, an adorable elk.

    – All right. So we got the tour of the Grand Canyon. Now we are in the gameplay session room, where tons of creators and press are getting to play the game for the first time, the first people outside of the devs who have played the game, and the impressions and the reactions to how good it looks.

    Take a look at this incredible box art for the premium deluxe edition. Just really showcases all of what you’re going to be able to do. And you get a double-wide steelbook with that, which is pretty cool.

    I’m here with the man of the hour, the man representing the hard work of so many talented folks. It is the head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, Jorg Neumann. Jorg, how’s it going?

    – Good to see you.

    – Good to see you as well. So two months before release. How are you feeling? Anxious, excited? What’s going through your body–

    – Both.

    – Both?

    – You know, I would say I’ve been in gaming for 30 years. This is, by far, the biggest project I’ve ever had anything to do with. 10 weeks to go, which means there’s a massive amount of work left, but what we have is awesome.

    MALIK PRINCE: I wanted to start with something that’s probably near and dear to your heart, which is the history of the franchise that you’re working on. Right to your right here, we have some kind of display that showcases that history. Can you tell us a little bit about what we’re seeing before we go into the future?

    – So this is actually my personal collection, Flight Simulator. This comes from– I typically have that standing right behind me on my desk. So these are the first Microsoft Flight Simulators. This one’s actually the first one that came out in 1982. Then this is ’83. This is another version.

    And then it evolved. Here’s Microsoft Home, So at the very beginning of Microsoft Home. If you go back in the history of Microsoft gaming, Flight Simulator is actually at the very beginning. In fact, it is Microsoft’s longest-supported franchise.

    – Good little fact.

    – And as I keep telling–

    – Yeah, it’s a good one, though.

    – –it predates Windows and Office. So it is something that the company is super proud of. It actually has the Microsoft name in it. And we’re now at the 12th new version.

    MALIK PRINCE: Yeah. I mean, so much history. It’s got to feel incredible to know that you’re working on essentially what is the next generation of Microsoft Flight Simulator because this is a whole new release.

    JORG NEUMANN: A whole new release. It’s a totally different version of the engine. We– basically, it got so big– we launched Flight Simulator in 2020. There’s add-ons from what we call third parties, basically creators. 5,000 add-ons. We’re now a 2-terabyte download, so we had to re-architect the entire sim.

    We added an incredible amount of detail to the planet, which we call the digital twin. We more than doubled the aircraft. There’s now an activity system or a career system that we introduced because the community were asking for more things to do. So it’s a totally new product, a new shape of product. It’s kind of unprecedented in flight simming, so I think people are super excited.

    MALIK PRINCE: Yeah, I mean, it’s very obvious. Like I mentioned, we’re at this creator space, and we’ve been watching creators play, and it’s been interesting seeing where they decide to go in the map. Because to your point digital twin– I got to fly over my high school. I flew over what we experienced today here and what you’re going to see in the podcast, which is here at the Grand Canyon, which is such a great experience. We got in a helicopter. We got– you’ll see it all in the video. But it’s just really cool.

    So what are some of the other things that maybe people may not think about that you and the team kind of set and improve on in this game?

    JORG NEUMANN: The planet, the surface of the planet, is 4,000 times the resolution that it was before.

    MALIK PRINCE: Mind blowing.

    JORG NEUMANN: I mean, basically, our wireframe looks like it’s now a textured environment. It’s so detailed. Basically, think about every rock, every pebble on Earth is going to be in this sim. Every tree, every bush, everything. It’s incredible. Like, you can literally land anywhere, and it is a very close to real-life type of experience.

    We added new things, like animals are now roaming the Earth. Interesting. We populate the oceans with ships. We basically– transponder signals of every ship on Earth. And we are drawing every ship on Earth. We’re also drawing every plane in the air. So it’s an unprecedented level of content. Nothing ever like this has been done before.

    And it all is brought together by this activity system, where you can basically launch your aviation career. You can pursue your aviation career. And you can start anywhere you want on the planet, somewhere in the middle of Western Australia, or wherever your pursuit really takes you. And then you can pick what pilot you want to become. You want to become a search and rescue pilot or a passenger airplane pilot? There’s tons of careers that you can pursue. And I think people are going to have a blast. If you like aviation at all–

    – Literally no stone left unturned. And I got to say about the aviation activities– that’s what I’m so excited about. But even beyond that– because, of course, how much in-depth you can go. But what I would say– there are so many people who may– this is the most realistic sim that I’ve ever seen, personally. That’s my personal opinion. It looks incredible.

    But even just getting in a Cessna– it’s super simple. Like, you literally take off the parking brake, and you hit the throttle, and you’re up in the air. So for anyone who may be thinking, oh, I don’t know if I can– you absolutely can. There’s a bunch of approachable ways to tackle this sim, but there’s also some really in-depth stuff.

    So I’m going to ask you, actually, to pick your favorite child here. What’s your favorite feature or what you’re most looking forward to in this game?

    – I think what I look forward most to is you can– you’ve now become a person. So flight sim traditionally was– you’re just picking planes from a hangar. Now you’re picking a person at the beginning.

    MALIK PRINCE: Yeah, that’s right.

    JORG NEUMANN: We actually took great care to represent mankind correctly because this is a product– there’s very few products like this or games like this that is the entire planet. You can go anywhere on the planet. And we took great care. We worked with the UN. How do we represent mankind? So you get to pick yourself.

    Then there’s a feature that we haven’t talked about much at all. It’s called player voice. You record your own voice, and that is the voice with which you communicate throughout the entire experience. So other people will hear it. It’s awesome. And it sounds super authentic. So you embed yourself in this world of aviation.

    And if you love– I believe aviation and the dream of flying is a human– a fundamental human dream. And I think we’re really unlocking this in a way that has never been done before, more accessible than ever before, broader than ever before. So if you’re interested even a little bit, try it.

    MALIK PRINCE: Incredible incredible. All right, Jorg, as we wrap things up, any final words for the community? And also, preorders are open today. When’s the game release?

    – Final words for the community is thank you. We’ve been in this collaboration with the community. As a matter of fact, we say now we’re making this for the community, with the community. This is no longer just one development team. We’ve embraced them. There’s lots of creators out there that are awesome what they do. So we’re making this with about 25 teams. And that really takes us to the next level. And as far as when is it coming out– November 19–

    – 19.

    – I’m loving it so far. Compared to– as great as 2020 was, this feels like the overhaul that Flight Sim needed for 2024. This is fantastic. I am right now flying over my neighborhood in Southern California, and it’s amazing. It’s like a one-to-one reproduction. The ground-level graphics– amazing.

    – Well said. And with the best voice in gaming, of course.

    – [LAUGHS]

    – Again, we’ve seen so many people–

    – As I crash.

    – Yeah. I almost made him crash. We don’t want that to happen. But we’ve seen so many people decide to go to their neighborhoods and fly over and notice, hey, that’s the local grocery store where I buy eggs and milk and all that good stuff. Is this SnowBikeMike?

    – Hey, what’s up, Team Xbox? It is SnowBikeMike from Kinda Funny Games. How are y’all?

    – We’re doing well. Oh, and I feel like I made– almost made you crash. Thoughts on the sim so far?

    – Yeah, I’m having so much fun here on the sims. As you can see, I’m out in the plains of Africa, currently looking to find a giraffe. There’s wildlife in the game now, just so you know. And I’m going to take an awesome photo of some giraffes. But first, I got to fly this plane.

    – Yeah, and I got to make sure he doesn’t crash. I’m going to go over to my gaming station, and we’re going to get a hands-on with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. And I’m going to kick you all out, OK? So it’s been great talking to you. We’re going to talk to a few other people who made the game. I’m going to do my thing, OK? Peace.

    All right. So we are making this turn. Look at that beautiful mountain in the background. That is incredible. This is so cool. This is–

    PILOT: Well, welcome aboard, everyone. I’m going to get going here with some preflight checks.

    MALIK PRINCE (VOICEOVER): You all can tell the helicopter to take off because Malik Prince will not be on the helicopter.

    – I’m in the helicopter.

    MALIK PRINCE (VOICEOVER): Now, I’ve always said that I would never, ever get in a helicopter, but in the name of Flight Sim 2024, it was time to face my fears.

    – All right, I did it. I did it. I faced my fear. I got in the helicopter. And I lived. Don’t get me wrong. I am happy to be back on Earth, on the ground. If you want to experience that, can’t get out to some place like this, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. You can do the same, exact thing we just did because it is the entire world at your fingertips.

    All right. Now we’re going to check out the career mode in the game. Again, the team talked a lot about how they wanted to take feedback from the community, and one of the things the community was asking was for the ability to have more goals and challenges in the game. And part of that– they didn’t just do that. They built an entire career mode.

    All right. What’s up, everyone? I am back here. And this time I’m with David from Asobo. How is it going today?

    – Very good. Thank you. Very excited.

    – Very excited. Yeah, I mean, I think I’m feeling that excitement. So we’ve been talking about the presentation that you’ve given to the creators and a lot of the press out there. One of the things that I think was really impressive and the thing that I’m most looking forward to are the aviation activities. Can you talk about what the main buckets of the aviation activities are?

    – Obviously, I would say the big thing is the career, where basically, you can– what we have worked hard on is to make it as good for an early beginner, but also for our customers. Basically, you start as a rookie, and you meet the mentor. This mentor will explain you how to manage your career, basically. And the more you progress in your career, the more money you will earn, and the more exam you will going to be able to pass.

    And at one point, you will have enough money to actually buy your– because you were an employee at this stage. And suddenly, you have enough money to buy your own plane. And maybe you will start with a second-hand plane, which is mid, which is not new, which means that it has been used, which means that the maintenance– it’s maybe not as expensive when you buy it, but the maintenance fee is not the same.

    And it’s another step in the understanding of how aviation works because so far, you didn’t had to even take this into account. But now suddenly, on top of all the other mechanisms, which is the scoring of the mission, your expertise– sorry, your level, your experience, and your reputation– on top of this, suddenly, you have to manage your plane.

    And if you do come back to the skydive game mode– I mean, missions– if you land too hard too many times, your plane will start to be damaged. And then you will have to do the maintenance and et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. And that’s so important. You will maybe become rich enough– [LAUGHS] to actually buy a new one and expand your fleet and suddenly expand the fleet in another domain. And step by step, maybe one day, you will be able to buy an airliner.

    MALIK PRINCE: And I think that’s what I was so taken aback by and what so many creators were taken aback by when you all were presenting it. It would be one thing if you all just kind of added careers and it was like, hey, let me check this off. OK, I’m getting a grade for it.

    But you all went further. You went into making it so that essentially, you’re becoming– starting as a mentee, and then you could potentially be an entrepreneur of your own business. And I love the little added touch, I got to say, of the consequence where it is your plane that you purchase, and so if you know that there’s a potential for you to damage it, you’re more likely to take it more seriously.

    DAVID DEDEINE: But at this stage of the career, as you just mentioned, it’s– suddenly, it’s your plane. And if you crash it, you lose it. And it’s– the money is gone.

    And I guarantee that when you will fly your first person– I mean, own plane, you will realize that, oh my gosh, this is mine. And you want to take care of it. And everything seems suddenly much more real, just because of that.

    – David, this has been awesome. Thank you so much. We cannot wait to jump in. Thank you for chatting with me.

    – Thank you very much. It was a pleasure.

    – Yeah. Did you know that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 presents massive technology improvements, such as much quicker launch times and takes up just a fraction of the space required from the previous release? And when you do launch, world updates are already streamed and available. And that includes handcrafted airports. Every free aircraft, airport, and point of interest is directly available.

    Speaking of improved tech, I got to sit down with a few folks who know all about it. I’m here with Brandon and Chris, who are actually partnering with Microsoft and with Asobo to make Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 as awesome as can be. Brandon, can you tell me, one, who you are and what team you’re on, and then we’ll get into a little bit of the questioning?

    – Yeah. And thank you for being here for the interview. So my name is Brandon Yeager, probably better known in the flight simulation community as Jonks. I’m the founder of Got Friends. And we’re a small team of aircraft developers, so we’re really excited to be part of 2024 and bring what we are doing primarily, which is bush aircraft and gliders, to the new sim. And just really excited to be here for that.

    – All right. So I just got to chat with Seb, and we were talking about the improved tech and how detailed they went. For you, what does that added effort of the detail that they’re putting into this game– how does that change how you partnered with the team?

    BRANDON YAEGER: Bush aircraft and gliders, like I was mentioning, is primarily what we’re going for 2024, and the ground-level detail– it’s incredible, right? So everything they’ve been able to add, whether that is the new– just the grass physics, landing and grass, hitting a twig, there’s trees laying everywhere, the amount of depth they put into the water and everything.

    And so we’re really excited because, I mean, we’re making those low, slow aircraft, and gliding is going to be an absolute pleasure to look down at the ground. And bush aircraft– that’s going to be extremely fun. I think you heard in the presentation you’re going to be able to need to make a pass at where you’re going to land first, so you’re not coming down and damaging your aircraft or doing something to your gear.

    MALIK PRINCE: Now, Chris, I wanted to go to you. Introduce yourself and the team that you’re working on.

    – Sure. I’m Chris Burnett. I’m the manager I’m one of the founders of Working Title Simulations. And we work on avionics and detailed aircraft systems. And for 2024, we’ve been working on a lot of flight plan work in addition to the avionics packages and then a handful of aircraft as well.

    MALIK PRINCE: Yeah. I mean, you kind of mentioned that your goal is to make Flight Simulator 2024 the most realistic piloting experience possible. I want to ask you how you’re doing this, but I want to set it up in the sense that I watch so many people on YouTube who actually go further than what the flight sim experience is. And part of what you’re bringing to the sim is all of those things that maybe happen before a pilot even takes off, the preflight checklists and stuff like that. Can you talk a little bit about what else players can expect when they jump in?

    CHRISTOPHER BURNETT: Sure, yeah. There’s two big things that we’re adding to this experience for flight simmers. And you mentioned a lot of hard core simmers use other tools and things that they do outside the sim before they even jump into the sim. And we’re just trying to bring more of that experience into the sim’s ecosystem.

    So the couple things that are really cool are, one, being able to plan and brief your flight in advance. And then the other thing that David talked about in the presentation was that preflight activities themselves, so being able to walk around the plane, check all the control surfaces. All the things that a real pilot would do in their course of activity, we get to do that in the sim now. And it’s really cool.

    – What’s it been like transitioning from just huge fans to getting to work on the title?

    – We all started out in the community. And now we’re working deep inside the sim, bringing some really cool features together. And I think it’s really awesome that Microsoft and Jorg and the whole leadership team are taking guidance from us, from all of our teams, in terms of what the community really wants to see and what things we can do to improve the sims.

    Our team is kind of interesting. We’re about half people that came with a simming background, so people who have been simming since FS4, FS5, like myself, and then a bunch of people who hadn’t simmed before but got the bug because of how cool Flight Sim 2020 was. So it’s actually kind of a fun juxtaposition to look at those different sets of people in our team.

    – All right. So Brandon and Chris, thank you so much, adding even more realism to a sim that had it all. Just finding new ways to make it even more realistic for the players. I love it. Thank you so much for chatting with me.

    – Thank you.

    – Thank you.

    – Yeah. I’m here with Seb from Asobo. Seb, how’s it going?

    – Great.

    – All right. So we’re doing this little hand back and forth mic thing, but we’re making it work because we’re here. The presentation that you gave– it went into such detail. There were literally gasps from the creators and the press from how much you went into detail. Can you give me a quick overview of how you’ve changed and improved the tech from Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 to 2024?

    SEBASTIAN WLOCH: There’s a ton of improvements here. I mean, there’s a lot more detail, closer to the ground. You see tons of more detail, 4,000 times more detail, actually. We improved the lighting. We improved the general rendering.

    – Now, when you say 4,000 times the detail, how are they going to experience what that 4,000 times detail means as far as gameplay goes?

    – Yeah. So there’s two examples. One is– so we showed a wireframe picture in 2020. You see a triangle, which is the ground geometry, and with the aircraft, when you drive– I mean, when you take off, the wheels are rolling over it. That’s the level of detail you get. So each triangle is going to be about this big. And so the bumps cannot be smaller than this, right?

    With 4,000 times more detail, the bumps are this big, right? So we have rocks, stones, mud. This is all simulated. And you see it in 3D. You can see it. You can see it from far away. You can fly over and say, oh, no, I’m not going to land here. There’s rocks. Let’s pick another field. And when you land on it, you need to change the way you fly, actually, too, to take the bumps. And so that’s one of the big, big impacts.

    – Another thing that I really thought was impressive from the demos you all showed was the actual changes to how the wake turbulence behind the plane and/or helicopter has been improved, the tech behind that. Can you go through that a little bit?

    SEBASTIAN WLOCH: Yes, yes. So we have now four components which simulate air and aerodynamics in the sim. And so one which has been added is– it’s added to the CFD, so it’s the computational fluid dynamics, which was already present around the aircraft, but it stopped at around– like, you take the wingspan of the aircraft or the size of the blades, and you double that, and that’s where it stopped. It’s what we needed to make the aircraft fly realistically.

    But you fly in an area– for example, with a helicopter, you go where you come back, it was clean air. And now there’s this wake turbulence simulation. It’s another computational fluid dynamics simulation, but it’s a different scale. It has actually– it has six layers which cascade from very small to very big. And this allows us to basically keep it there for up to six minutes.

    So actually, there is no time limit. It’s just that when all the energy is gone, when all the turbulence is gone, we delete that area. And the maximum we’ve had was six minutes, which is what’s actually happening realistic with a very heavy airliner. But the helicopter is going to leave easily one or two minutes behind of turbulence.

    And very important for pilots. This is dangerous. On a real airport, you always wait, depending on the– they will say heavy, for example, on ATC, depending on the aircraft which takes off. I personally once was on final with a very, very small, light aircraft. And a helicopter from a helicopter school just crossed the runway without any ATC, nothing, just like that. And so it was a small airport. There’s no tower, right? So people do more crazy stuff.

    And so, yeah, we didn’t even– interrupted the final. We immediately went up. And you don’t even want to go through this because you– I mean, there’s videos on the internet and accidents and stuff. It just flips your aircraft faster than you can count on the aileron. And so that’s very important simulation aspect that we added.

    – Well, again, there are so many updates to what you all did as far as tech wise that we can’t even cover them all. But I’m excited for all– everyone– all the players out there to check out this sim when it releases. Seb, you and the team have done a great job. Thank you so much for chatting with me.

    – Thank you.

    Meta has unveiled a new entry-level mixed reality headset, the Meta Quest 3S, which starts at $299.99 for the 128 GB model and $399.99 for 256 GB. Pre-orders are live at Meta’s website and will ship Oct. 15 along with a copy of Batman: Arkham Shadow. The Verge was able to get a hands-on demo with the new Quest 3S and notes that it is “bringing a lot of what you can get on the Quest 3 to a much more affordable VR headset.”

    As part of the unveiling, Meta has also announced that both the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro are being sunsetted, streamlining the lineup to these two Quest 3S models as well as the 512 GB Meta Quest 3 for $499.99.

    While Meta has been pushing virtual reality for many years now — I still have vivid memories of trying out a very early Oculus Rift prototype more than 12 year ago — one of the key turning points was the release of the entry-level Meta Quest 2. It was this headset that eschewed the need to set up multiple external cameras or long cords tethering you to a gaming PC, opting instead for a self-contained experience both in terms of hardware and software, all at a more palpable (though ever-fluctuating) price point. By all accounts, the new Quest 3S will be Meta’s new entry-level model for years to come.

    Ubisoft has delayed Assassin’s Creed Shadows by three months.

    The open-world adventure game was due out November 12, 2024. It now launches February 14, 2025.

    In a statement, Ubisoft said it needs more time “to polish and refine the experience, pushing further some of our key features.”

    Meanwhile, Ubisoft confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will release on Steam day-one, unlike the PC version of the company’s previous major release, Star Wars Outlaws. Preorders will be refunded, and Ubisoft is departing from the traditional season pass model, with all future preorders granted the first expansion for free.

    In a note to the investment community, Ubisoft said that while Assassin’s Creed Shadows was “feature complete”, the “learnings” from the release of Star Wars Outlaws “led us to provide additional time to further polish the title.” Star Wars Outlaws had a “softer than expected launch,” Ubisoft said.

    “This will enable the biggest entry in the franchise to fully deliver on its ambition, notably by fulfilling the promise of our dual protagonist adventure, with Naoe and Yasuke bringing two very different gameplay

    styles,” Ubisoft contined.

    The Assassin’s Creed Shadows delay comes amid a troubling time for Ubisoft that has seen its share price collapse following the release of Star Wars Outlaws. Earlier this month, a minority investor in Ubisoft issued a strongly worded open letter to Ubisoft’s board of directors, including its CEO Yves Guillemot, as well as fellow investor Tencent, that expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the company and its current share price.

    Unless you had a CRT TV or a Sinden light gun, Time Crisis has been largely out of reach for most fans of the arcade shoot-’em-up classic. That’s all set to change, as Dashine Electronics has announced GAIME, a new device that comes with an “AI-powered” light gun that the company claims can work on modern-day LCD TVs and comes preloaded with Time Crisis.

    Pricing starts at $90 for the base unit and $120 for a deluxe version that adds in a pedal controller, but there is no release date yet for the launch of the GAIME. Dashine Electronics plans to showcase it at the Tokyo Game Show this week, and on its official website, the company says that the GAIME uses “state-of-the-art” AI technology to create a seamless plug-and-play experience.

    “The AI Gun is engineered to self-calibrate by intelligently detecting your screen, offering unparalleled accuracy and ease of use. It works from various angles and distances, supports all kinds of common screen sizes, [and] can be tilted to shoot–it is designed with the casual gamer in mind.”

    For rail-shooter fans, this could be an affordable way to play Time Crisis or any other games if they’re ported to the GAIME. There are other solutions–like Arcade 1Up’s Time Crisis cabinet if you can spare $750–or the Sinden light gun, from which the Time Crisis cabinet gets its technology.

    This is sold at a similar price to the GAIME and works primarily for PC, while PS1 and PS2 consoles are supported via a physical mod.

    During September 24’s Sony State of Play, Sucker Punch revealed the long-awaited first trailer for its Ghost of Tsushima sequel. And boy howdy, it sure does look pretty.

    Ghost of Yōtei is the name of the newly revealed sequel and it’s set in a different part of Japan, a few hundred years after the events of the first game, and stars a new character, Atsu. We don’t know much more about the story, but Sucker Punch did make it clear in a blog post published after the reveal that it “wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend.” The setting, according to the blog post, is the year 1603, in “the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei” in the region of Japan that today is known as Hokkaido. That’s all we really know about the story and world of this sequel.

    Looking at the new 4K trailer posted by Sony, it really feels like Ghost of Yōtei was designed not only to showcase the power of the PS5, but also to show off the newly announced $700 PS5 Pro. It’s shocking to me that Sony didn’t include this game in the PS5 Pro announcement, even as a tiny teaser, to show off something totally new and amazing looking, running on the pricey console.

    According to Sucker Punch, this is the first game they’ve built from “the ground up” for PS5. And I expect Ghost of Yōtei will take full advantage of the PS5 Pro. Here’s what Sucker Punch had to say about working on the PS5.

    This is also Sucker Punch’s first game built from the ground up for PlayStation 5, and we’re excited to build on the visual foundation we established in Ghost of Tsushima by making the world feel even more real. We have massive sightlines that let you look far across the environment, whole new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable movement from wind on grass and vegetation, and more improvements we’ll share in the future.     How do you finish a State of Play show? Will in the case of today’s September 24 broadcast from Playstation, the answer is by revealing Ghost of Yotei, a follow-up to Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima.

    It’s set to arrive in 2025, and got an initial cinematic trailer for the game, featuring a female ronin protagonist for the first time in the series’ short history. One who’s seemingly got a thing for wolves in the same kinda way Jin Sakai couldn’t stop messing about with foxes.

    The trailer’s blurb offers some info on the plot, reading as follows: “In 1603, a new Ghost named Atsu sets out on a journey in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, an area filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers. Ghost of Yōtei comes to PS5 in 2025.”

    “When we set out to make a new Ghost game,” Sucker Punch communications manager Andrew Goldfarb wrote in the PS blog about the announcement, “we wanted to maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world.

    “We also wanted to continue to innovate. To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story and the island of Tsushima, and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost instead. At Sucker Punch we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.”

    Goldfarb also added that this is “Sucker Punch’s first game built from the ground up for PlayStation 5”. “We have massive sightlines that let you look far across the environment, whole new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable movement from wind on grass and vegetation, and more improvements we’ll share in the future,” he wrote, “Our new setting also gives us the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons.”

    Notably, Mount Yōtei is in real world Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan known for its, well, snow. Odds are you won’t be doing any snowboarding in this game, but to be fair, you never know. Expect Sucker Punch to reveal more details about Ghost of Yotei “in the months ahead”.

    September’s PlayStation State of Play featured 20 new games for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2, including some of the most anticipated titles and some big announcements. Here’s everything we saw in September’s State of Play, as it happened.

    Astrobot

    The cutesy platformer that took the world by storm last month opened up the stream with the announcement of a new free DLC with five new online levels with speedrunning capabilities and ten new bots to rescue. The DLC drops later this year, with more on the way.

    The Midnight Walk

    This new game doesn’t just *look* like claymation, it actually *is* claymation. Ambitious? Yes. Burtonesque? Absolutely. The Midnight Walk is coming to PS5 and PSVR2.

    Hell is Us

    This one definitely looks interesting. Not much to go in in terms of storyline, but it appears to be some form of horror soulslike with fantasy elements set following some form of otherworldly war. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

    Metro Awakening VR

    The award winning post-apocalyptic franchise goes VR, with plenty of otherworldly threats as you search for a missing girl. Metro Awakening VR drops in November, so be prepared to scream yourself stupid.

    Archeage Chronicles

    A fantasy hack and slash that seems to take influence from a variety of sources. THere are characters who wouldn’t look out of place in Assassin’s Creed fighting alongside wizards, pirates, and classic barbarians. Archeage Chronicles drops in 2025.

    Palworld

    Palworld is coming to PS5! While it’s no secret that the game is making the journey, we can’t wait to see how the game will play on PS5 – and it launches today! Get ready to explore a whole new world of monsters and mischief.

    Lunar Remastered Collection

    Lunar Remastered Collection brings two classic PS1 RPG’s – Lunar: The Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete – the the PS5 with enhanced graphics, widescreen mode, and more. Expect plenty of classic turn-based action when the game launches in Spring 2025.

    TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge

    The classic arcade game came to PS5 some time ago, but there’s more to be excited for. THe Radical Reptiles DLC brings Mondo Gecko and Mona Lisa to the game as playable characters, while the soundtrack has been remixed by guest composers. Both updates will be up later today.

    Sonic X: Shadow Generations

    Ahead of the release of the next Sonic the Hedgehog movie, a new update will bring movie star Keanu Reeves into the game as Shadow, reprising his role from the third Sonic the Hedgehog movie and reenacting scenes from the movie. This update to the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack arrives on December 12th, but don’t forget you can play the Movie Pack on October 25.

    Fantasian Neo Dimension

    THis one looks beautiful. It’s a turn-based RPG with handmade dioramas and a score by JRPG legend Nobuo Uematsu. There’s influence from a few different classic RPGs, so if you’re a fan of the genre this is definitely one to ask Santa for ahead of the December 5 release date.

    Dragon Age: The Veilguard

    The latest Dragon Age game drops on Halloween, and wouldn’t you know it? It looks awesome. Fans of the franchise know what to expect, but has the franchised ever looked this good? Well, considering the last entry was available on the PS5, no. This is definitely one we want our haptics for.

    Alan Wake 2: The lake House

    Alan Wake 2 is getting its physical release next month, but we have more to look forward to, namely the Lake House DLC. This new campaign puts players in the shoes of Control heroine Jesse as she explores the Lake House, an FBC facility in Bright Falls.

    Hitman: World of Assassination

    Assassination games scratch a sadistic itch in us. Maybe it’s the fact that we get to create the most over the top and contrived kills possible, or just shoot our way through the crowd if we want to. We just know that dropping a chandelier on our enemies never gets old. World of Assassination brings the action to the PSVR2 this December.

    Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered

    Ooooh well isn’t this a pleasant surprise! Longtime gamers may well remember the Legacy of Kain series, particularly Soul Reaver – a post-apocalyptic vampire-themed game with fiendish puzzles and a world-shifting mechanic. Soul Reaver stars Raziel, a vampire/wraith combo out for revenge against his old friends and master. Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered drops on December 10.

    Last week EA finally set the record straight on The Sims 5: There is no Sims 5. There’s just The Sims 4—forever. EA plans for The Sims 4 to be the “foundation of our future growth strategy,” but this game needs a serious overhaul before it can be the foundation for anything.

    The multiplayer Sims game currently in development under the name Project Rene is still in the works, and EA plans for it to live beside The Sims 4. They’ll share creator tools, a gallery, a marketplace, and some kind of social network. Instead of winding down The Sims 4 and rolling out The Sims 5, EA says it’s “disrupting the sequel model” by continuing to invest in the current game with years of more DLCs and updates.
