US vs. Iran: The Most Political World Cup Gets Its Most Politically Charged Match

    [ad_1]

By the time he wrapped his press conference in Qatar on Monday, United States men’s national team coach Gregg Berhalter cut the figure of an embattled head of state, not someone trying to stave off elimination from the World Cup. On the eve of a win-or-go-home match, Berhalter and team captain Tyler Adams were grilled by Iranian journalists about US policy on immigration and the country’s military presence in the Persian Gulf. One reporter took Adams to task with a question about discrimination in America, while Berhalter was asked whether inflation might be hindering the team’s support back home.

Berhalter and Adams fielded some questions about the USMNT’s next opponent, but tactical analysis tends to get overshadowed when that opponent is Iran. In a World Cup where it has proven nearly impossible to stick to sports, Tuesday’s match between the United States and Iran is the most politically charged contest yet, the ultimate tempest in an unusually fraught tournament. Given the long-standing hostilities between the two countries, the match was always bound to invite geopolitical story lines, but now it is set against the backdrop of monthslong demonstrations in Iran triggered by the arrest and death of Kurdish Iranian woman Mahsa Amini. The Iranian government’s violent crackdown on its own people has cast a shadow over its national team’s World Cup campaign, creating a red-hot atmosphere in Qatar for both players and fans. The United States Soccer Federation waded into the political upheaval this week when it posted a now deleted graphic on social media of the Iranian flag that did not include the emblem of the Islamic Republic, a gesture meant to show solidarity with the protesters. Iran’s own soccer federation responded by calling for the US to be expelled from the World Cup.

That set the stage for Monday’s strange press conference, where Iranian journalists repeatedly confronted Berhalter and Adams, both of whom tried gamely to steer the questions back to the game itself. “We support Iran’s people and Iran’s team,” Adams said. “But that being said, we’re laser-focused on this match, as they are as well.”

Adams was promptly scolded by a reporter from Press TV, an Iranian government-affiliated outlet, who pointed out that the 23-year-old midfielder was “pronouncing our country’s name wrong.”

“Our country is named eee-ron, not I-ran,” the reporter said, before asking Adams, who is Black, whether he is “okay to be representing a country that has so much discrimination against Black people in his own borders.”

Adams apologized for the mispronunciation. “There’s discrimination everywhere you go,” Adams said. “One thing that I’ve learned, especially from living abroad in the past years, and having to fit in in different cultures is that in the US, we’re continuing to make progress every single day.” Adams said his experience, growing up African American in a white family, made it easier for him to assimilate in different cultures and touted the importance of education in gaining a better understanding of others.

“You just educated me now on the pronunciation of your country,” he continued. “So yeah, it’s a process, I think as long as you see progress, that’s the most important thing.”

Berhalter, meanwhile, stressed that neither he nor his players were aware of the US Soccer Federation’s social media post. “All we can do, on our behalf, is apologize on behalf of the players and the staff,” he said

The Iranian national team hasn’t avoided the fray either, of course. Since September, the country has been roiled by protests inspired by Amini, a 22-year-old who died in Iranian police custody after being arrested for violating the country’s law that requires head coverings for women. The Iranian government has been under international pressure for its brutal response to demonstrators; the United Nations estimates more than 14,000 have been detained for protesting, hundreds have been killed, and more are at risk of being tortured. Before their opening World Cup match against England last week, Iran’s players staged a silent protest by not singing the country’s national anthem. After reportedly receiving “fierce criticism from government officials,” the players participated in the singing of the anthem before their win on Friday against Wales, but the victory was marred by clashes outside the stadium between pro-government Iranian fans and those supporting the protests. One of Iran’s players dedicated his goal against Wales to the “suffering” people of Iran. Last Friday, the Iranian government arrested an outspoken Iranian Kurdish soccer player, who had not made the national team, on charges of “incitement against the regime.”

Even without all the political strife, Tuesday’s match would hardly be short on drama. The final group stage game for both teams, it also offers plenty of enthralling sporting subplots. With a win, the US will advance to the knockout rounds after failing to qualify for the World Cup four years ago. Iran is likewise guaranteed to go through with a victory, but a draw could also be sufficient. The United States will also be searching for its first win against Iran in what will be the third overall meeting between the two countries.

Their first match came at the 1998 World Cup in France, where a 2–1 victory for the Iranians caused the US to crash out of the tournament. That game was just 17 years removed from the Iranian hostage crisis. “The Iranian regime hated America. That’s why that game was such a big game on the world stage, and had so much importance. Equally as much as the football piece was the political piece,” said Steve Sampson, who was US national team coach at the time.

The 1998 match was also preceded by friction between the two camps. Iran’s political leadership had apparently instructed the national team to not shake hands with the US players prior to the match, as is customary at a World Cup, but tournament organizers held firm. “They said if you don’t want to participate in the rules in a tournament, you’re free to go home,” recalled Hank Steinbrecher, then the secretary general of US Soccer.

Adams and his teammates are surely less concerned about that history than the immediate implications of Tuesday’s match. None of the players were alive when the US and Iran severed diplomatic ties in 1980, and few have memories of the 1998 match. “I wasn’t born yet,” Adams said at Monday’s press conference, “so, don’t remember it.”

What is Camel flu? Fifa World Cup fans at risk of catching virus deadlier than Covid: Report

    [ad_1]

FIFA World Cup 2022: Football fans in Qatar are at risk of catching Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) infection, also known as Camel flu, according to World Health Organization (WHO) experts. Fifa is expected to draw nearly 1.2 million people from around the world and this massive gathering could trigger the spread of the virus.

In a study published in the journal ‘New Microbes and New Infections’, scientists have listed Camel flu as an infection risk during the four-week-long sporting event. Camels are known to be the origin of MERS, which is caused by a coronavirus.

Scientists, as per the study, have found that mass gatherings pose a threat of potential infectious disease spreading rapidly. Considered to be a deadlier cousin of the COVID virus, Camel flu has affected dozens in Qatar over the last decade. The virus kills up to a third of everyone who gets infected.

Apart from Camel flu, football fans are also face potential health-threatening diseases such as cutaneous leishmaniasis, malaria, dengue, rabies, measles, hepatitis A and B and travellers’ diarrhoea.

As per WHO, the Camel flu virus could get transferred to humans from infected dromedary camels. Camel flu has been identified in dromedaries in several countries in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. The WHO also claims that human-to-human transmission is also possible.

Since 2012, 27 countries have reported Camel flu cases, which has led to 858 known deaths due to the infection. Symptoms of Camel flu include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Currently, there’s no vaccine or specific treatment is available, but are in development.

After upset win over Germany in World Cup, Japanese players leave dressing room

    [ad_1]

Japan’s 2-1 comeback victory over powerhouse Germany at the Qatar World Cup Wednesday shocked the soccer world, but its win was not the only thing which grabbed some attention.

Following the victory, the Japanese soccer team took the time to clean its dressing room, FIFA reported. A picture shared by FIFA showed the locker room with swept floors and folded towels. Not only did the room appear immaculate, but the team also left behind origami cranes and a thank you note written in Japanese and Arabic.

In its tweet, FIFA described the changing room at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha as “spotless.”

Furthermore, Japan’s fans also took the time to clean up in the stands as well, FIFA added.

“Huge respect to these Japanese fans,” FIFA wrote in a video shared on Twitter which showed a number of fans collecting trash from the stands.

“Supporters stayed behind to help collect plastic bottles and clean up the stadium,” FIFA tweeted

Japan faces Costa Rica Sunday at 5 a.m. EST in its second Group E match. Japan currently sits in second place in Group E behind leaders Spain, both with three points. The top two teams in the group will advance to the knockout round.

Fans at the World Cup said the stadium barred them from entering with shirts and flags protesting the regime in Iran. Inside, security officials were also seen confronting a woman over her jersey, which read Mahsa Amini, whose death in Iranian custody sparked the unrest. Roxana Saberi has the story.

  • Iran Soccer Team Begrudgingly Sings Anthem, Then Plays Their Hearts Out

Iran Soccer Team Begrudgingly Sings Anthem, Then Plays Their Hearts Out

    [ad_1]

Soccer players are often lampooned for their demonstrative reactions during play, in the hopes of inspiring a referee to call a foul. Today, reading their expressions meant a lot more.

    Twitter content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

During the match, there was some tension in the stands, the Associated Press reported. Spectators in support of the Iranian government were said to have been harassing those who were in protest. Fans wearing shirts reading “Woman, Life, Freedom,” received boos. Security guards prevented some from entering the arena with Persian flags representing the time before the Islamic Revolution of the late 1970s. Shouting matches broke out, and at one point, when three different women were speaking to foreign media, they were surrounded by loud men who chanted “The Islamic Republic of Iran!” to disrupt the interviews.

Nevertheless, Iran beat Wales 2-0. They lost their previous game against England 6-2. On Tuesday, they will play The United States.

Elsewhere in Qatar, an unexpected and charming development has blossomed. Many fans report being delighted by the “Singing Street Marshalls” that have popped up around the stadiums. These helpful guides, perched atop lifeguard chairs, have been hired to direct people to public transportation hubs. Most are migrant workers from Ghana and Kenya, and after a few days of boring, repetitious instruction, they have taken to giving their message in song. Given the controversy surrounding which A-list performers would come to Qatar, where a variety of human rights can land someone in prison (see: Rod Stewart turning down a $1 million gig) it’s good to see people at the grassroots filling in the gaps.

  • Iranian soccer star Voria Ghafouri arrested for criticizing government

Iranian soccer star Voria Ghafouri arrested for criticizing government

    [ad_1]

Iran arrested a prominent former member of its national soccer team on Thursday over his criticism of the government as authorities grapple with nationwide protests that have cast a shadow over its competition at the World Cup.

The semiofficial Fars and Tasnim news agencies reported that Voria Ghafouri was arrested for “insulting the national soccer team and propagandizing against the government.”

Ghafouri, who was not chosen to go to the World Cup, has been an outspoken critic of Iranian authorities throughout his career. He objected to a longstanding ban on women spectators at men’s soccer matches as well as Iran’s confrontational foreign policy, which has led to crippling Western sanctions.

More recently, he expressed sympathy for the family of a 22-year-old woman whose death while in the custody of Iran’s morality police ignited the latest protests. In recent days he also called for an end to a violent crackdown on protests in Iran’s western Kurdistan region.

The reports of his arrest came ahead of Friday’s World Cup match between Iran and Wales. At Iran’s opening match, a 6-2 loss to England, the members of the Iranian national team declined to sing along to their national anthem and some fans expressed support for the protests.

Prior to that gesture, the team had lost support from fellow Iranians for its meeting with hardline Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Holly Dagres, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, told CBS News this week.

Dagres said that while the team remaining silent during the anthem “may seem very significant, many Iranians were already disappointed in the team’s behavior during the past week.”

In addition to the meeting with Raisi, Dagres said photos showing the players celebrating their World Cup entry, as “protesters were being slain in the streets by security forces,” left many Iranians to view their team “as not representative of them, but of the clerical establishment.”

The protests were ignited by the Sept. 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman arrested by the morality police in the capital, Tehran. They rapidly escalated into nationwide demonstrations calling for the overthrow of the Islamic Republic. The western Kurdish region of the country, where both Amini and Ghafouri are from, has been the epicenter of the protests. Shops were closed in the region on Thursday following calls for a general strike.

Iranian officials have not said whether Ghafouri’s activism was a factor in not choosing him for the national team. He plays for the Khuzestan Foolad team in the southwestern city of Ahvaz. The club’s chairman, Hamidreza Garshasbi, resigned later on Thursday, the semiofficial ILNA news agency reported, without elaborating.

The protests show no sign of waning, and mark one of the biggest challenges to Iran’s ruling clerics since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that brought them to power. Rights groups say security forces have used unleashed live ammunition and bird shot on the protesters, as well as beating and arresting them, with much of the violence captured on video. Last week, Iran sentenced a person to death for taking part in the protests.

At least 442 protesters have been killed and more than 18,000 detained since the start of the unrest, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran, a group that has been monitoring the protests.

The U.N. Human Rights Council voted Thursday to condemn the crackdown and to create an independent fact-finding mission to investigate alleged abuses, particularly those committed against women and children.

Authorities have blamed the unrest on hostile foreign powers, without providing evidence, and say separatists and other armed groups have attacked security forces. Human Rights Activists in Iran says at least 57 security personnel have been killed, while state media have reported a higher toll.

The protesters say they are fed up after decades of social and political repression, including a strict dress code imposed on women. Young women have played a leading role in the protests, stripping off the mandatory Islamic headscarf to express their rejection of clerical rule.

Some Iranians are actively rooting against their own team at the World Cup, associating it with rulers they view as violent and corrupt. Others insist the national team, which includes players who have spoken out on social media in solidarity with the protests, represents the country’s people.

The team’s star forward, Sardar Azmoun, who has been vocal about the protests online, was on the bench during the opening match. In addition to Ghafouri, two other former soccer stars have been arrested for expressing support for the protests.

Other Iranian athletes have also been drawn into the struggle.

Iranian rock climber Elnaz Rekabi competed without wearing the mandatory headscarf at an international competition in South Korea in October, a move widely seen as expressing support for the protests. She received a hero’s welcome from protesters upon returning to Iran, even as she told state media the move was “unintentional” in an interview that may have been given under duress.

Earlier this month, Iran’s football federation threatened to punish players on its beach soccer team after it defeated Brazil at an international competition in Dubai. One of the players had celebrated after scoring a goal by mimicking a female protester cutting off her hair.

  • EU condemns Qatar over alleged human rights abuses ahead of World Cup

EU condemns Qatar over alleged human rights abuses ahead of World Cup

    [ad_1]

European Parliament has formally condemned Qatar for suspected human rights abuses that are believed to have caused the deaths of migrant workers contracted to build preparations for this year’s World Cup.

In a resolution passed on Thursday, the EU governing body called on FIFA to help Qatar compensate all migrant workers and their families through an expansion of the country’s Worker’s Support and Insurance Fund — which, according to a news release, has already distributed about $320 million to workers who are victims of wage abuse — to include coverage for workers’ deaths and “other human rights abuses.”

The resolution puts pressure on Qatari officials to conduct thorough investigations into all reported incidences where a migrant worker has died on the job, and provide restitution to the families of those whose deaths are determined to have been caused by unsafe working conditions. It comes amid growing accusations that suggest Qatar exploited migrant workers to build the stadiums and structures where the World Cup is currently taking place.

Mustafa Qadri, the founder of the Equidem organization, which investigates labor abuse, told CBS News last week that migrant workers were subjected to forced labor and unsafe physical working conditions, and were expected to work for months at a time without pay. Qadri traveled to Qatar to conduct research into the alleged human rights abuses that he estimated has killed at least hundreds of workers, and told CBS News that he was arrested during his time there.

European Parliament estimates that thousands of migrant workers have died in Qatar as a result of dangerous working conditions leading up to the World Cup, according to Thursday’s news release.

“With the 2022 FIFA World Cup having kicked off in Qatar, Parliament deplores the deaths of thousands of migrant workers ahead of the tournament,” the release said. It acknowledged the controversial, and potentially corrupt, means through which Qatar won the bid to host this year’s matches, and denounced FIFA for its role in the selection process. Members of parliament described corruption within FIFA as “rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted,” according to the release.

Referencing a series of labor reforms passed but not fully applied in Qatar, members of European Parliament also pushed in their resolution for “the full implementation of the adopted reforms.” They also condemned the country’s laws criminalizing same-sex relations and public anti-gay rhetoric, and called for an increase in female representation in the professional sector.

  • Japan fans win praise for stadium cleaning at World Cup 2022

Japan fans win praise for stadium cleaning at World Cup 2022

    [ad_1]

Japan’s stunning victory over Germany left their football fans in a state of joyous disbelief on Wednesday.

Now, supporters of the Samurai Blue are earning praise in Qatar for an off-pitch tradition that appears to be uniquely Japanese: Cleaning up stadiums after other football fans have left.

In what is becoming an increasingly common sight, Japanese fans stayed behind after their team’s win over Germany on Wednesday and helped to clean up the Khalifa International Stadium.

As soon as the stadium started to empty, Japanese supporters could be seen taking out light blue disposable rubbish bags and getting to work.

While the sight of spectators staying back to clean up may be a surprise to many, for the Japanese it is not out of the ordinary.

“What you think is special is actually nothing unusual for us,” Danno, a Japanese fan, told Al Jazeera with a casual shrug.

Danno does not understand why people think the gesture is odd.

“When we use the toilet, we clean it ourselves. When we leave a room, we make sure it’s tidy. That’s the custom,” he explained.

“We can’t leave a place without making it clean. It’s a part of our education, everyday learning.”

Social media posts featuring Japanese football fans with rubbish bags started doing the rounds in the days following the opening game of the tournament, between Qatar and Ecuador at Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday.

In one post, a man is expressing his shock at a Japanese fan cleaning inside the Al Bayt Stadium long after most spectators had left and in a match that did not feature the Japanese side.

Samurai Blue’s supporters have been cleaning up football stadiums for a while; even a defeat does not detract them from this important post-match task.

During the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Japan lost their round-of-16 match against Belgium with an injury-time goal. Japanese fans were heartbroken but that did not detract them from getting out their disposable rubbish bag and going to work.

Saysuka, who spoke to Al Jazeera ahead of the match against Germany, said she is aware people are taking notice of their tradition but noted the fans are not doing it for publicity.

“Cleanliness and tidiness is like religion to us in Japan and we treasure it,” she said, before opening her backpack to show a pack of rubbish bags she will use and distribute to others after the match.

While social media videos of the stadium-cleaning Japanese may be relatively new, tidiness and organisation have deep roots in Japanese culture. These characteristics are gaining a worldwide following through books and television shows.

Japanese organising consultant Marie Kondo is now a global household name thanks to her books and a popular Netflix series on the topic.

Takshi, a Japanese football supporter who lives in the United States but grew up in Japan, says he learned the tradition of tidiness as a child.

“We had to clean our rooms, our bathrooms, our classrooms, and then as we grow up, it becomes a part of our lives,” he said.

After Japan’s victory over Germany, Takshi and his 13-year-old son Kayde stayed behind with their fellow supporter.

With Japan now having three points on the table and two more group matches to go, fans and spectators can expect to be treated to more Japanese aesthetics, on and off the football pitch.

  • Budweiser will send unsold World Cup beer to winning country

Budweiser will send unsold World Cup beer to winning country

    [ad_1]

Cases of Budweiser that were meant to be sold during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar will instead go to fans of whichever country wins the global soccer tournament, the beer brand’s parent company announced this week.

The World Cup kicked off on Sunday with fans cheering on their favorite teams from living room couches, neighborhood bars and in the stadiums — but without booze, as the host county announced a surprise ban on alcohol sales in stadiums. Now Anheuser-Busch InBev said it plans to bring the “celebration from the FIFA World Cup stadiums to the winning country’s fans.”

“We will host the ultimate championship celebration for the winning country,” the Belgium brewer said in a statement, adding that it will provide more details on the beer giveaway as the tournament approaches the December 18 final.

Anheuser-Busch InBev didn’t disclose how many cases would be sent or how the alcohol would be transported.

FIFA officials announced last week that no alcohol will be sold at the eight stadiums in Qatar hosting matches, drawing complaints from visiting fans. The Muslim country is conservative and tightly regulates alcohol sales and usage.

Fans can still purchase Bud Zero, Budweiser’s non-alcoholic beverage, inside stadiums in Qatar, FIFA said.

The announcement upset fans in part because Qatar said in September it would permit ticketed fans to buy alcoholic beer at World Cup matches starting three hours before kickoff and ending one hour after the final whistle.

Since 1986, AB InBev has paid tens of millions of dollars during each World Cup for exclusive rights to sell beer. This year’s sponsorship is worth $112 million, Yahoo Sports reported. Because beer won’t be sold in Qatar, Budweiser plans to ask FIFA for a $48.2 million discount from its 2026 deal, British tabloid The Sun reported.

AB InBev’s renewed its deal with FIFA in 2011, after Qatar was controversially picked as host. The company will pay $170 million in its 2026 deal with FIFA for the next World Cup, which is to be held in jointly in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, Yahoo reported.

Qatar isn’t the first country to face a FIFA-alcohol issue. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the host country was forced to change a law to allow alcohol sales in stadiums.

This year’s tournament continues with four matches on Wednesday. FIFA will air another four matches on Thanksgiving, including Brazil taking on Serbia.

The announcement comes after the 37-year-old forward conducted an explosive interview on the eve of the World Cup, criticising manager Erik ten Hag and the club’s owners.

Cristiano Ronaldo will leave Manchester United “with immediate effect,” the Premier League club said on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old forward conducted an explosive interview on the eve of the World Cup, criticising manager Erik ten Hag and the club’s owners.

Last week, United said it had “initiated appropriate steps” in response to Ronaldo’s comments.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement. “The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.”

Ronaldo said in a statement on Tuesday that he loved the club and the fans. “… That will never ever change,” he added. “However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge. I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future.”

Ecuador’s fans chanted “We want beer!” during their FIFA World Cup’s opening match against host Qatar on Sunday.

Sports journalist Javier Lanza caught the moment at Al Bayt Stadium, where Ecuadorean fans in one of the sections began to chant in Spanish. The rallying cry was in response to Qatar’s abrupt decision to ban beer sales at all venues used for the World Cup tournament.

Still, fans had plenty to celebrate as Ecuador defeated Qatar 2-0 after two goals from striker Enner Valencia.

Ecuador fans erupt in “We want beer” chants during opening match against Qatar

    00:11

On Friday, two days before the game, FIFA announced the last-minute change that would ban alcoholic drinks from the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues. Non-alcoholic beer would still be available for fans at the 64 matches.

Budweiser’s parent company, AB InBev, pays tens of millions of dollars at each World Cup for exclusive rights to sell beer. The company’s partnership with FIFA started at the 1986 tournament.

In addition to its reversal on its alcohol policy, Qatar has faced a litany of criticism since being named host of the World Cup, mainly for not addressing its alleged abuse of migrant workers and LGBTQ community. FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended Qatar’s human rights record on Saturday, saying Europeans should be “apologizing for the next 3,000 years before starting to give moral lessons to people.”

  • Katy Nesbitt, first American woman to ref at World Cup, is living her dream after teaching chemistry:

Katy Nesbitt, first American woman to ref at World Cup, is living her dream after teaching chemistry:

    [ad_1]

Team USA kicks off its first appearance in the World Cup since 2014 on Monday. But another American who qualified for the competition is also grabbing headlines: Katy Nesbitt, the first American woman to officiate at a men’s World Cup.

It’s a role she spent a lifetime preparing for — in some unexpected ways.

“I can honestly say I am living my dream, and this was the biggest dream come true for me,” Nesbitt told CBS News.

“It’s such an honor that I get to do this and to represent female referees in this way, and to represent my country,” she said.

The assistant referee, who already reffed at the 2019 Women’s World Cup and men’s league championships in the U.S., was picked as one of just six women who — for the first time — are joining more than 100 male officials at the World Cup.

“Honestly, this felt like something impossible that could never happen, so it was the most unreal feeling,” she said about being selected.

MLS and World Cup referee Katy Nesbitt
Katy Nesbitt (C) walks out to the pitch for warmups with her fellow referees Timothy Ford (L) and Kevin Lock (R) before the game between Minnesota United FC and LAFC at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota on September 13, 2022.

    Getty Images

The 34-year-old first got involved in refereeing by helping out at her brother’s soccer games. It later turned into something she could make money doing. But she never imagined as a kid that it could become a career.

“Everybody asks why I … stuck with it, and I’m still not really sure sometimes,” she said, laughing.

Nesbitt stuck with it even while competing as a figure skater, and then trying a different experiment: a career in chemistry.

“I started liking chemistry when I was in high school,” she said. “And my high school teacher blew something up and I was like, ‘Well, this could work for me.’”

She earned a PhD studying the brain chemistry of traumatically injured patients and became a chemistry professor at Maryland’s Towson University.

“I had two computers set up in my office, one so I could analyze my data, and the other one so I could have every single World Cup game on,” she said.

But with two passions, she said she felt the strain of not being able to put her best foot forward in either one. She began to pursue refereeing full-time.

Women have held the whistle in major men’s sports for a while. Violet Palmer became the first woman to ref an NBA game a quarter-century ago, and last year, Sarah Thomas made history as the first woman to referee a Super Bowl. She was part of a seven-person crew officiating at Super Bowl LV in Tampa Bay.

But Nesbitt said she didn’t want to stand out.

“I chose to wear my hair in a bun and not in a ponytail because I … wanted to … be seen as just the same as every other referee,” she said.

Though, she admits, that didn’t always happen, including times when she has faced sexism.

“There have been everything from looks to comments made to me,” she said. “It was difficult in the moment, of course. Um, but it kind of also fuels your fire a little bit, too.”

  • John Oliver Exposes The ‘F**king Nuts’ Truth Behind Qatar’s World Cup.

John Oliver Exposes The ‘F**king Nuts’ Truth Behind Qatar’s World Cup.

    [ad_1]

The World Cup kicked off on Sunday with host nation Qatar suffering one of the most humiliating defeats in the history of the event.

But as “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver reported on Sunday, the nation’s poor performance on the pitch is nothing next to what’s going on off of it.

Oliver gave a brief history of how Qatar won the event from FIFA, soccer’s governing organization, which he called “a cartel-like group of scumbugs and assorted criminals who occasionally put on soccer matches.”

The nation’s selection was tainted by scandal and corruption.

“I won’t say that Qatar definitely got the World Cup through bribery,” Oliver said. “But I won’t say that they didn’t, and I will say that they did.”

What happened next, however, is far worse.

Qatar had no facilities to host such an event, and no workers who could build them in a short space of time, so they brought in foreign workers who by most accounts are being horribly mistreated, with thousands dying in the process.

Some were trapped in a system compared to slavery.

“All of the new stadiums and infrastructure were essentially built through modern-day slavery,” Oliver said. “So we should probably introduce a new collective noun to refer to this group of stadiums: a gaggle of geese… a pod of whales… an atrocity of stadiums.”
