The Age of Elegance: How Opulent Fashion Is Set to Define 2024

    [ad_1]

In 2023, restrained minimalism was a major theme—the much-discussed quiet luxury trend defined by simple silhouettes, few logos, and “if you know, you know” pieces. While those pared-back looks are timeless and will always be in style, it’s clear that we’re starting to pivot away from restrained dressing. Instead, we saw a shift toward hyper-elegant fashion in the spring summer 2024 ready-to-wear and spring 2024 couture collections.

Altuzarra sent models down the runway in heavy satin evening coats, A-line circle skirts, and refined scoop-neck midi dresses that took inspiration from the 1968 film Rosemary’s Baby. Dior reimagined its iconic hourglass-shaped bar jacket, originally designed in 1947, aptly named for its intended use during afternoon cocktail hour. Hermès brought the Plume bag back to the runway—one of the fashion house’s earliest handbag designs from the 1960s. Prada debuted frothy pastel organza dresses with dramatic trains that walked the runway to the soundtrack from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 film Vertigo.

There is a sense of looking back to the way people used to dress in a bygone time that is really sticking on and off the runways. The timing is interesting, too, from a cultural standpoint. The much-anticipated show Feud: Capote vs. The Swans was just released, chronicling Truman Capote and the glamorous socialites of ’50s and ’60s New York. As Rachel Tashjian puts it in the Washington Post, “Ladies who lunch have become 2024’s unexpected fashion icons,” as lust for the glamour of a previous era has returned.

Simply put, we’re entering the age of elegance, and 2024 is marking the return of fashion that is opulent and refined and may just make us want to get dressed up again. Ahead, read more on how elegant fashion will impact what we’re wearing.

32 Things to Shop Now, According to the Most Influential Fashion Newsletters

    [ad_1]

The Newsletter: Line Sheet by Lauren Sherman

Line Sheet is a must-read newsletter with an insider’s view of the fashion industry written by the ultimate insider, Lauren Sherman—a former editor at Business of Fashion. “I’m probably unique in this crew, in that my newsletter is one small part of a much bigger, incredibly ambitious publication that covers wealth, power, and influence across the culture,” Sherman explains. “I started reading Puck almost as soon as it launched in 2021 and thought my reporting style and voice were a good match. Lucky for me, they thought so too.”

Each edition takes a look at breaking fashion industry news sprinkled with rumors, personal thoughts, and links worth clicking on. “I cover the industry from the inside, but in a way that people who claim to have zero interest in fashion still enjoy,” Sherman shares. “My readers are a mix of legitimate fashion insiders—CEOs, designers, marketers, editors—people who touch fashion but aren’t in it, and those who have nothing to do with it but find it irresistible. Some readers love the high-fashion intrigue. Some love the DTC drama. Others are just there, really, for my link roundup. It’s a lot of fun.”

As Puck describes it, “Lauren Sherman’s Line Sheet is like going to a great, gossipy dinner and then reading a gratifying piece of journalism.” It’s entertaining and wildly attention grabbing.

31 Pretty Date-Night Tops You Can Actually Wear in the Winter

    [ad_1]

Dressing for date night can be quite the conundrum under normal circumstances, but that increases tenfold in the winter. You want to feel polished and elegant while still remaining comfortable (but also effortless)—it’s a tall order. When you factor in frigid temperatures, the outfit puzzle suddenly feels impossible.

Enter the pretty top. It’s a classic for a reason, as it pairs well with everything from maxi skirts to tailored trousers. But not just any top will work when you consider the low temperatures and layers of outerwear. I have a system for gauging if a top will work well for those winter nights out: Either it has sleeves, or it has a material or neckline that looks nice under a jacket. As long as it meets one of those criteria, I can rest assured I’ll be comfortable for wherever the evening takes me. Since we’re still in peak winter and approaching Valentine’s Day, I’m highlighting 31 cute winter tops perfect for date night.

  • The 4 Best Balmain Bags, Period

The 4 Best Balmain Bags, Period

    [ad_1]

    Photo:

Launchmetrics Spotlight; PICTURED: Balmain Pre-Fall 24 Collection; Olivier Rousteing at F/W 23 Show; Balmain S/S 24 Collection

Much like the late Balmain, Rousteing’s challenging journey has led him to create some of the most captivating clothing of our time. Born as an orphan, Rousteing, from a young age, felt compelled to design. He studied at Ecole Supérieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode before landing roles working under Roberto Cavalli and then Christophe Decarnin. His later role, under Decarnin, led the protégé to eventually become the creative successor of Balmain at the age of 24, making him the youngest Black designer to be appointed to a luxury fashion house. In hindsight, his appointment marked the shift for Balmain and the broader fashion industry. Remember that long before there was any collective reckoning about the lack of diversity within the fashion industry, there was Rousteing.

For so long, positions of power in the high echelons of society and high fashion have been associated with whiteness. Therefore, the mere fact that Rousteing has existed within that space for well over a decade is revolutionary in and of itself. But it’s not just that he’s occupied that space; he’s succeeded in it. By bringing back the brand’s couture, menswear, and leather goods, he’s successfully increased Balmain’s bottom line by millions of dollars. In many ways, Rousteing has managed to bridge the gap between haute couture and current culture, which is no easy feat. In part, how he’s been able to do that is his ability to notice what’s next.

If you pull the receipts, you can see that Rousteing has always been ahead of the curve; reference the brand’s early social media campaigns or even his recent collaboration collection with Beyoncé for her recent album, Renaissance. He’s been out here doing the work, okay! The grind that he’s put in has subsequently allowed a new generation, or what Rousteing refers to as the “Balmain Army,” to see luxury in a new light. No longer is it something out of reach, but it resonates with them; it can also be a part of their lives. That shift is most evident in the popularity of the brand’s handbag collections. For so many, Balmain’s bags are the entry point into a space they may have never felt they belonged. But what exact Balmain bags are beloved by this generation? Keep reading to find out.

  • According To Scientific Facts, These Types of Sweaters Are The Warmest

According To Scientific Facts, These Types of Sweaters Are The Warmest

    [ad_1]

While every type of sweater is priced differently thanks to the materials, labor, and knitting process that goes into it, if you’re willing to splurge on a good quality sweater, opt for a high-quality, thick cashmere sweater— the higher the percentage of cashmere in it, the better. But, as always, there’s layers to the type of cashmere you can get.

According to Stockholm-based Chinese designer Lisa Yang, the determining factor in how soft cashmere sweaters can be lay in a few key details: the weather conditions of where the goats are from and the craftsmanship that goes into spinning the yarn to make the sweater. Yang specifically sources her cashmere from Inner Mongolia, given the region’s history and livestock.

“There are very different standards and grades of cashmere, just like you see with many other materials. At Lisa Yang, we always source grade A fibers for our yarn production,” the designer tells Who What Wear. “To explain in a bit more detail, grade A fibers are the highest quality cashmere you can get, the longest and the finest. The diameter of each fiber can be as small as 14-15.5 microns, with a length of 34- 36mm.”

“However, it is not only down to the quality of the natural fiber but is also due to the experience of the cashmere producers in this region — they have worked with this yarn, spinning and knitting cashmere, for centuries. No-one has a better understanding of the craft of cashmere production than my longtime friends and producers in Inner Mongolia who we have worked with for over a decade – they are like part of our family.” Yang says.

4 Cozy Accessories I’m Wearing on Repeat This Winter

    [ad_1]

I grew up in Southern California, so dressing for winter doesn’t exactly come naturally to me. As an avid skier, I’ve learned through trial and error which are the essential pieces when temperatures are low, and those pieces are accessories. We all know that accessories make an outfit, but in the winter, that rings especially true. Yes, the coat and layers underneath are important, but adding key accessories to prevent exposed skin will make or break your day.

This winter has been particularly brutal for much of the U.S., so I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been living in their coziest items. I’ve hyperfixated on four accessories that have become my official winter uniform—I would truly freeze without them. From oversize scarves to shearling-lined shoes, these are the hero pieces that have been keeping me warm all season. Below, I’m highlighting the cozy accessories I can’t do winter without.

Copenhagen Fashion Week Brands Are Prioritizing These 5 Trends for Fall 2024

    [ad_1]

You’d typically find me galivanting around Copenhagen this time of year. However, as I write this, I’m snuggled up in bed in Los Angeles instead of attending the Danish capital city’s fashion week. Talk about FOMO. However, I’ve been studiously following along from afar, taking notes on all the recurring themes on the runways. (And already planning my outfits for next season!)

For starters, a quartet of brands were on the same page when it came to the best denim trend of the season. Munthe, Gestuz, Marimekko, and Helmstedt all showed different interpretations of what I’m simply calling “fun jeans.” Translation: denim adorned with sequins, crystals, floral prints, or patchwork detailing. My Ferrari-Red Shopping List for Anyone Following Lewis Hamilton to His New Team

    [ad_1]

Whether you’re a Formula One fan or somehow only realized today that you follow a lot of drivers on social media, then you’ve probably already seen some of the thousands of graphics and memes about Lewis Hamilton’s decision to leave his team of 11 years in Mercedes at the end of 2024 and join Scuderia Ferrari, F1’s most successful team and the one with the scarlet-red car.

Suffice it to say, there have been tears—both happy ones and not-so-happy ones—on all sides of the move, which was announced on Thursday. Hamilton’s fans are nothing if not loyal and aplenty—the driver, fashion designer, musician, and more has amassed over 35 million Instagram followers. Come 2025, Ferrari should expect a massive influx of fans, all of whom will be expected to wear the team’s iconic color. With that in mind, I thought I’d use some of my pent-up energy to, instead of refreshing F1 Twitter every five seconds, do what I do best: shop. Ahead, find 24 chic and Ferrari-red items that any fashion-minded Hamilton fans who are planning to shift their loyalties over to the storied Italian team should buy ASAP (or at least before 2025).

The countdown is on. The 66th annual Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 4. In anticipation of the sure-to-be-amazing looks, I decided to take a walk down memory lane and revisit iconic outfits by one of the event’s most dominant red carpet designers: Versace.

You probably don’t need reminding, but Jennifer Lopez‘s cut-down-to-there Versace dress went hugely viral in 2000—before going viral was even a thing. In 2021, Doja Cat wore her own version of the dress, donning a belly-button-exposing plunging gown festooned with feathers. The New Pants Trend Fashion People Are Overlooking Jeans For

    [ad_1]

We’re just a month into 2024, but we already have the intel on the denim alternative that fashion people are setting aside their jeans for. It takes a lot, but every so often something comes along that makes us completely overlook our beloved denim. In the past that’s looked like a glorious skirt trend or a chic pair of trousers, but no matter what form a jeans alt comes in, it has some large shoes to fill. Right now, it’s none other than corduroy pants that are going head-to-head with our go-to jeans, and once you see the level of effortlessness and chill they bring, you might just find yourself reaching for a pair, too.

In fact, there’s never been a better time to swap your blues for some cords—denim brands have started released corduroy versions of their most popular jean silhouettes, from The Row and their viral Eglitta Jeans to Levi’s popular Baggy Dad Jeans and plenty more options in between. On the 2024 runways, we’ve spotted standout corduroy pant looks in Loewe’s and Fendi’s menswear collections, providing even more styling inspiration for the look. Up ahead, discover the corduroy pants trend that fashion people are replacing their jeans with and, as always, shop the most popular pairs on the market.

3 Spring Trends to Try Before They Become Too Popular

    [ad_1]

I’m far from a fashion trailblazer, but I’ll admit that over-saturated trends tend to be a bit off-putting to me. If a trend has its own TikTok terminology, it’s probably not something I want to spend my money on. One thing I do to stay ahead of the curve is try out seasonal trends early. I have a not-so-secret advantage: I live in Los Angeles, where I can easily test-drive spring and summer trends in the middle of winter. I know that not everyone enjoys this privilege, but with some strategic layering, anything is possible!

Below, I rounded up some spring/summer 2024 trends straight from the runways that I predict will explode once April arrives. Valentino, Victoria Beckham, and Ganni are just a few of our reader-favorite brands I’ve included, along with shoppable selections from H&M, Mango, and more.

This Cult-Loved Brand Just Dropped a Damage-Erasing Conditioner, So I Tried It

    [ad_1]

Although my skin type and hair texture don’t always allow for it, I love to try new beauty products on a weekly basis. Granted, some products don’t always work out, but I’m on an endless quest to find what I truly love—the products that make me swear off all others. As a part of this quest, I was curious about biomimetic haircare brand K18. I talk to a lot of stylists and it’s one of the brands that they consistently recommend.

I initially didn’t give it a second thought because it seemed like a brand exclusively for fine, thinner hair types or folks who bleach their hair. I’m also always a bit skeptical when it comes to products that claim to be for “all hair types.” If having thick, coarse, 3c curls has taught me anything, it’s that not all formulas are going to gel with your hair (cheers to learning this the hard way!). While K18 does say it is for all hair types and textures, I decided to give a few of the brand’s products a go to see how they’d work for my curls. A few star products I tried included the brand’s new Damage Shield Protective Conditioner ($36) along with the accompanying Damage Shield Protective Shampoo ($36). Keep scrolling for my honest thoughts.

  • Makeup Artists Compliment My Makeup Whenever I Wear This Underrated Product

Makeup Artists Compliment My Makeup Whenever I Wear This Underrated Product

    [ad_1]

Don’t get me wrong—makeup-related compliments from anyone at any time are wonderful, but there’s something about receiving a compliment from, um, an actual makeup artist that just kind of transcends all others. Makeup artistry is their profession, after all.

Now, I don’t score this particular kind of coveted remark often, but I have noticed an interesting pattern. Any time a makeup artist has openly admired my makeup, it’s always been on my shimmery shadow MO. And since I pretty much abhor powder and cream formulas, their compliment always befalls whichever liquid eye shadow I happen to be wearing on that blessed day. (Spoiler: I have lots of liquid eye shadows I collect and adore equally.)

As someone who is rather inept when it comes to eye makeup (for years, I strictly wore mascara and maybe a quick flick of liquid liner), my obsession with liquid eye shadow makes sense. While it may sound counterintuitive (liquid equals mess, right?), these types of formulas usually involve way less mess and fallout, they’re easier for me to blend, they’re faster to apply, and they don’t move once they dry. For someone who adores the look of ethereally glimmering eyelids (Hi! Me!), there couldn’t be a better medium. Therefore, I pretty much exclusively wear liquid eye shadows in lieu of the powder options most makeup artists seem to prefer.

Because all of the best liquid eye shadows have scored me loads of compliments over the years and because summer is approaching and ’tis the season for a fuss-free liquid formula to shine, I’m sharing nine of my all-time-favorite liquid eye shadows below. Plus, some game-changing makeup products to pair them with because why would you stop at your lids when compliments are on the table? Keep scrolling.
