‘The Way Home’ (2023 – Present)
The setup for The Way Home should sound familiar to romantic drama fans. A newly single mother, Kat Dhawan (Chyler Leigh), has to take her teenage daughter, Ali (Sadie Laflamme-Snow), back to their hometown, Port Haven, so they can rebuild their lives. Kat also has to reconcile with her mother, Del Landry (Andie MacDowell), after being estranged from her for two decades.
Here’s where things veer off into fantasy. Ali discovers a pond that can take her back and forth across time. This allows her to meet her mother as a teenager and explore the family secrets that have kept Del and Kat apart for decades. Eventually, all three generations of the family become aware of the pond and what it can do. Season 3 was added to Netflix this month, and it’s the penultimate chapter ahead of the show’s fourth and final season.
Unfamiliar is a German spy thriller about Meret (Susanne Wolff) and Simon Schäfer (Felix Kramer). Nearly two decades ago, this couple worked as undercover agents for the German Foreign Intelligence Service, or BND. Now, to the outside world, they’re just the parents of a teenage girl named Nina (Maja Bons).
Simon and Meret aren’t entirely removed from the spy business, and that oversight may come back to bite them. While hiding a new client who claims to be an injured BND operative, Meret and Simon realize that they’ve been targeted. They also discover that they’ve been keeping some big secrets from each other that harm their mutual trust at the moment they need it the most. As for Nina, she may find out about the family business long before she’s ready to absorb the truth about her parents.
If you remember reading Robert Louis Stevenson‘s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, then you’ll recall that the story’s Victorian setting didn’t include cars. The Jekyll and Hyde series can get away with that because this show is jumping two generations ahead to the 1930s and centering on Dr. Robert Jekyll (Tom Bateman), the grandson of the infamous Dr. Henry Jekyll.
After being summoned to London to deal with his grandfather’s estate, Robert is drawn into the dark secrets of his family. He also discovers that he has a Hyde of his own, and this split personality has its own ideas about how to live. As Robert struggles with his alter ego, he uncovers new info about his parentage and enemies who want his family’s genetic powers for themselves. To survive, Robert may have to turn to his darker half and let Hyde run wild.

With still no arrest made, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) is relentless in seeking justice for her daughter, Angela, who was sexually assaulted and killed seven months ago. In a powerful statement of rage and defiance, Mildred has three provocative billboard signs erected outside of her small town of Ebbing, Missouri to urge the chief of police (Woody Harrelson) to take action. Despite attempting to reopen the case, the chief’s violent deputy (Sam Rockwell) doesn’t take Mildred’s billboards in stride — and neither do the townspeople. But Mildred pays no mind to gossip and scrutiny; she’s ready to burn the whole place down.
Martin McDonagh‘s Best Picture-nominated Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is an exceptional black comedy that weaves in biting, timely social commentary. No actress could have better played Mildred than McDormand, and for her searing performance, she received a well-deserved third Oscar for Best Actress. In addition to McDormand, Harrelson and Rockwell, the film features a fantastic ensemble cast that includes Caleb Landry-Jones, Lucas Hedges, Peter Dinklage and Samara Weaving.
‘The Spectacular Now’ (2013)
Popular high school party boy Sutter (Miles Teller) meets the introverted Aimee (Shailene Woodley) in an unusual way: after getting blackout drunk and ending up on someone else’s front lawn, where Aimee finds him the next day. The two unexpectedly hit it off despite the vast differences in their personalities, and Sutter asks Aimee to tutor him in geometry. As their relationship grows, it goes from friendship and mentor/mentee to genuine romance. As Sutter deals with the problems in his home life and Aimee prepares for her life beyond high school, their love grows stronger — but will it survive past graduation?
Then-newcomers Woodley and Teller showed off their acting talents in The Spectacular Now, a sweet and charming high school coming-of-age drama. The film does a terrific job at avoiding typical high school movie tropes and clichés, instead crafting a nuanced portrait of teenage problems that feels authentic. Not only do Teller and Woodley look the part, they feel it too, and it’s in the film’s very refreshing ordinariness that it manages to become extraordinary.

What is The A Word about?
Set against the idyllic backdrop of the Lake District, the series centres around the Hughes family, whose youngest son is diagnosed with autism and they “don’t feel like every other family anymore”.
The synopsis continues: “They realise that if their son is ever going to communicate, they are going to have to learn how to communicate themselves. It’s a funny and thought-provoking series about parenthood and childhood.”
Writer Peter described the series as “full of ideas about parenthood, about disability, about communication, about community”.
“We have the opportunity here to make something funny, tough, realistic and inventive about contemporary family life and autism,” he said in a statement ahead of the show’s release. “In a society where imperfection increasingly comes with blame attached, it seems timely to look at how autism is regarded both within a family and the wider community – and to give some insight into how that experience might be for the child on the autism spectrum.”

‘Love & Basketball’ (2000)
Love & Basketball is an aptly named movie because the passion that Quincy McCall (Omar Epps) and Monica Wright (Sanaa Lathan) have for the game is what brings them together in the first place. It’s also their shared passion that may drive them apart when their fortunes in the sport go off in different directions.
Writer and director Gina Prince-Bythewood structures this film like a four-quarter basketball game. The first quarter chronicles the way that Quincy and Monica meet as children, while the remaining quarters follow them through high school, college and into pro sports. There’s definitely a strong bond of love between Quincy and Monica that takes shape over the years, but it just may not be enough to make them last as a couple.
Saturday Night Live spinoff movies are becoming an endangered species in cinemas, largely because most of them can’t sustain their comedic momentum for the length of a film. For his latest case, Father Gabriel is teamed with a younger priest, Father Esquibel (Daniel Zovatto), as they face a demon that possesses a young boy named Henry Vasquez (Peter DeSouza-Feighoney). The demon’s reach extends to Henry’s sister, Amy Vasquez (Laurel Marsden), and the investigation by the two priests uncovers some secrets that the Catholic Church would probably wish to remain hidden.

‘Minx’ (2022-2023)
Joyce Prigger (Ophelia Lovibond) has big dreams for how to use her liberal arts degree, seeking to launch a feminist magazine in 1970s LA. But when no publisher will take her seriously, Joyce finds backing from an unconventional source: the adult entertainment industry. Joyce ends up joining forces with the sleazy Doug Renetti (Jake Johnson) to kickstart a porn magazine that’s geared towards women, by blending feminist writing with smut and full-frontal images of nude men.
Despite having the kind of nudity scenes that would give Game of Thrones a run for its money, Minx nevertheless was cut short by HBO before being saved by STARZ — and then canned for good. Thankfully, you can still watch the series in its entirety on Netflix, with two seasons worth of some fantastic writing, great character development and genuinely touching moments. At the end of the day, it’s the chemistry between Lovibond and Johnson that is truly what makes Minx sing.
‘Documentary Now!’ (2015-2022)
SNL alums Fred Armisen, Bill Hader andSeth Meyers take their love of iconic non-fiction films and lampoon them in this hilarious series. Each episode features a parody of a different documentary: from Grey Gardens and its portrait of the eccentric Kennedy family outcasts Big Edie and Little Edie, to The Talking Heads’ legendary concert film Stop Making Sense and the Netflix true crime doc Wild Wild Country, everything is fair game on Documentary Now! Hosted by the great Helen Mirren, guest performers include John Mulaney, John Slattery, Maya Rudolph and Anne Hathaway.
You may not understand every niche film reference in this sharp mockumentary series, but regardless of your cinephile credentials, it’s guaranteed that you won’t be able to resist the hilarious cameos and sharp writing of Documentary Now! Far from taunting jabs, the parodies in the show could only be done by artists who feel deep affection for their subjects, and each mini-documentary excels in laugh-out-loud humor and genuinely impressive production value.

‘Search Party’ (2016-2022)
This black comedy series stars Alia Shawkat as Dory, a rich housewife’s assistant living in Brooklyn who leads the charge on a search party for a missing acquaintance from college, Chantal Winterbottom (Clare McNulty). Joining Dory are Elliott (John Early), a flamboyant narcissist, chatty actress Portia (Meredith Hanger), doofy but sweet Drew (John Reynolds) and Dory’s blunt, cynical ex-boyfriend Julian (Brandon Micheal Hall), who also happens to be a journalist. Ultimately, each wacky friend possesses a unique quality that may help solve Chantal’s disappearance.
Search Party is first and foremost a true showcase for Shawkat’s acting talents. But it’s also an absorbing mystery series that is carried by its equally fantastic supporting cast, who portray eccentric, self-obsessed characters that manage to be both unlikable and likable at the same time. Basically, you can’t help but be compelled to keep watching Search Party, which works its way to a wild ending while providing a humorous send-up of selfish twentysomething New Yorkers.
Viewers who tuned into the latest episode of The Apprentice on Thursday night took to social media after noticing a change to the show’s format.
The long-running BBC series, which debuted its 20th season in January, sees 20 candidates compete for a chance to secure Lord Sugar’s £250,000 investment in their business plan, as well as his mentorship.
Viewers noticed that the winning teams have not been rewarded
Over the course of the series, the candidates are split into teams and set weekly tasks, all designed to test their skills in negotiation, sales, marketing and leadership. The losing team faces Lord Sugar and his formidable advisors Baroness Karren Brady and Tim Campbell, who have been keeping a watchful eye over the teams and making notes on their performance during the tasks. At the end of the episode, one or more of the candidates is fired.
Usually, Lord Sugar rewards the winning team with a prize, such as a spa trip. However, viewers have noticed the winning teams of the latest season have yet to be treated so far.

What have viewers said about the latest episode?
Taking to social media, viewers questioned why the winning team hadn’t received a reward. One person wrote: “Just thinking – no reward for winning a task this series,” while another asked: “Why doesn’t the winning team get a reward anymore?”

A third viewer penned: “Wait the winning team doesn’t get a reward anymore?! #TheApprentice,” while another asked: “#TheApprentice Why aren’t the winners getting a prize experience this year?”
At the end of episode one, Lord Sugar didn’t explicitly tell the winning team that he was withdrawing their reward, but he did call their performance a “disgrace”.

One of the most notable instances took place in 2011, when Lord Sugar provided the two teams with a pallet carrying 250 pounds’ worth of wholesale goods and tasked them with reinvesting in the best-selling products.

While the winning team made a profit of £751, Lord Sugar was still disappointed with the performance of the group, who were fined for ignoring the rules about reinvestment. Subsequently, Lord Sugar cancelled their reward, which would have been a helicopter trip to the sporting estate Goodwood and riding in vintage cars.

‘Influencer’ (2023)
Influencer is a thriller that plays with the idea of identity theft as a horror story. An influencer named Madison (Emily Tennant) finds herself at the center of this tale when she goes to Thailand by herself. Another woman, CW (Cassandra Naud), takes advantage of Madison’s solitude to earn her trust before stealing her life and leaving her for dead.
CW spreads an even deeper web of lies as she takes over Madison’s social media accounts. But she didn’t count on Madison’s boyfriend, Ryan Evans (Rory J. Saper), being able to expose her. If CW wants to hang on to her stolen lifestyle, then she’ll have to get her hands dirty.
Nearly three decades ago, Sylvester Stallone‘s Oscar hopes were pinned on Cop Land. An Academy Award nomination for Best Actor may have eluded Stallone, but his turn as Sheriff Freddy Heflin is easily one of his best performances. Because Freddy was injured years ago, he could never join the NYPD. But as the sheriff of a small town called Garrison, Freddy gets to live alongside members of New York’s police force, including Lieutenant Ray Donlan (Harvey Keitel).
Freddy has also turned a blind eye to the corruption that comes with Donlan and his men. However, Donlan’s nephew, Officer Murray Babitch (Michael Rapaport), and his colleague, Officer Gary Figgis (Ray Liotta), inadvertently expose the criminal underside of these dirty cops. As Freddy learns the truth, he has to decide whether to continue backing Donlan or if he’ll dare to stand against him.
Before he passed away in 2011, director Sidney Lumet had one last great crime thriller in him, which turned out to be Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. Lumet stages the story in a non-linear fashion, so you’ll have to pay close attention to catch all of the details. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke lead the cast as brothers Andy and Hank Hanson, respectively.
Andy and Hank are both at desperate moments in their lives, and one of the brothers has already betrayed the other. Regardless, they embark on a dangerous plan to rob their family-owned jewelry store, which is run by their parents, Charles (Albert Finney) and Nanette Hanson (Rosemary Harris). The brothers were foolish to believe that such a plan could go off without a hitch, and now the entire family will pay the price for their actions.

‘Open Water’ (2003)
If you’ve ever gone on a scuba trip in the ocean, then Open Water may seem like a horror story rather than a thriller. It’s inspired by the real-life tragic tale of Tom and Eileen Lonergan, a couple who were accidentally abandoned by their tour boat.
The film renames the couple Daniel Kintner (Daniel Travis) and Susan Watkins (Blanchard Ryan), and it doesn’t strictly follow what really happened. But it stays close enough to that nightmarish premise as Daniel and Susan find themselves alone in the water, with only sharks and other hungry sea creatures to keep them company as they desperately try to stay alive.
Director Spike Lee outdid himself with Inside Man, a sharp crime thriller and one of the best movies Lee has ever made. A few decades before the word “multiverse” became common in the cinematic lexicon, Sliding Doors presented a look at two parallel timelines that revolved around a young woman named Helen Quilley (Gwyneth Paltrow). If Helen makes her train on time, she’ll discover that her boyfriend, Gerry (John Lynch), is seeing Lydia (Jeanne Tripplehorn) on the side. She may even get to reinvent herself and live the life she always wanted.
But if Helen misses her train, Gerry gets away with his cheating, and she may never meet James Hammerton (John Hannah), the man she loves in the other timeline. Some events mirror each other in the possible worlds for Helen, but there are also certain things she can’t avoid in either timeline.
One of the best films of 2024, Flow is an Oscar-winning animated movie from Latvia with no dialogue, nameless animal characters and barely any plot. A black cat barely survives a stampede of wild dogs when a giant flood engulfs his home … and eventually, most of the land. Desperate to survive, the cat finds a floating sailboat with a capybara as its sole occupant. Eventually, a dog, a secretary bird, and a lemur join them, and together, they navigate the dangers of rising tides, an epic storm and other wild animals as they try to find dry land free of danger.
On paper, Flow seems intimidatingly basic, but the movie’s pleasures are in simply experiencing its gorgeous visuals and spellbinding score. The director, Gints Zilbalodis, wrote the screenplay and composed the music, and his passion shines through in every frame and musical chord. Most modern animated movies, with their celebrity voiceovers and assembly-line pop tunes, play it safe to appeal to everyone, but Flow takes risks by marching to its own beat. It pays off, and it’s an instant classic.
From gut-busting comedies and mockumentaries to engrossing character studies and arthouse indies, there’s a little something for everyone on the popular streamer.

Powerfully understated and flanked by additional standout performance from Turkington and The Bear’sJeremy Allen White, Fremont will sneak up on you with its lingering meditations on love and human connection.
Does Borat really need any introduction? If you’ve been living under a rock for the past twenty years, Borat is a mockumentary-style film starring comedian Sacha Baron Cohen as the titular mischief-making Kazakhstani reporter who travels to the United States to make a film about what makes America such a great place. There, he manages to offend just about everyone, become unhealthily obsessed with Pamela Anderson, and at the end of the day, learns exactly who Americans are.
It’s got its healthy share of controversies, but Borat ultimately endures to this day as a top-notch takedown of American prejudices, as Borat’s backwards, uncomfortable behaviors expose the simmering xenophobia and hypocrisies that persist in much of the country. In addition to being a surprisingly effective social satire, Borat is also just hilarious, full of memorable line readings like “My wife!” that have become forever cemented in pop culture.
Criminal Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) lives and dies by one credo: “Don’t get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner.” That all changes when McCauley meets Eady (Amy Brenneman), and the pair bonds over their mutual feelings of isolation from society. However, McCauley’s newfound love is complicated by Lieutenant Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), a cop who will stop at nothing to put McCauley away, and McCauley’s own dangerously rogue crewmember, Waingro (Kevin Gage).

‘America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys’ (2025)
Who made the Dallas Cowboys into America’s team? Not Jerry Jones, the man who purchased the organization in 1989. But he has become synonymous with the franchise and its three Super Bowl wins in the ’90s. America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys is a multi-episode documentary that chronicles Jones’ tenure as owner of the team, which began with the controversial firing of Coach Tom Landry and the hiring of Jones’ college teammate, Jimmy Johnson, to replace him.
This show largely lets Jones shape the narrative over the earliest years running the team, as well as his falling out with Johnson despite winning two Super Bowls together. The series isn’t exactly objective, but it’s still fun to watch footage that Cowboys team in action with Hall of Fame legends like Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin. Say what you will about the organization, but that ’90s team was something special.

You should consider SEC Football: Any Given Saturday as a primer for college football, rather than a complete look at what it entails. 30 for 30’s three-part documentary series, Celtics/Lakers: The Best of Enemies, adds an interesting wrinkle by having Donnie Wahlberg narrate the Boston side and Ice Cube handling the Lakers’ story while trading a few barbs at each other. Most of this series explores the famous battles between Larry Bird‘s Celtics and Magic Johnson‘s Lakers, but the history between them goes beyond any particular players. These two teams arguably set the tone for the last 40 years of basketball, and they’re still hated rivals to this day.

‘The Last Dance’ (2020)
The Chicago Bulls of the late ’90s had a collection of larger-than-life characters that most movies could only dream about. Coach Phil Jackson, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman and the incomparably iconic Michael Jordan ruled basketball courts like few other teams ever had. This group even had a personal nemesis in Bulls General Manager Jerry Krause, who declared that the 1997–98 season would be their final run together.
The Last Dance primarily focuses on the Bulls’ final championship campaign, with frequent flashbacks to the history of Jordan, Pippen, Rodman and other players and coaches associated with the team. It’s mesmerizing viewing, especially if you loved watching Jordan put on a show. There may never be another team as riveting as these Chicago Bulls, and their story still resonates three decades later.

‘This Was the XFL’ (2016)
Almost any wrestling fan can tell you that former WWE owner Vince McMahon has never succeeded in any venture outside of sports entertainment. But in 2001, McMahon and NBC — which had recently been jilted by the NFL — teamed up to take on America’s favorite pastime with the XFL, a football league that incorporated some of WWE’s over-the-top elements.
This was the XFL chronicles the disaster that followed, and the XFL’s subsequent demise after only a single season of play. Because this documentary was made in 2016, it doesn’t touch upon McMahon’s second XFL launch in 2020, which was an even bigger bust than the original one. But the story was far more interesting the first time.
If you’ve ever wondered if soccer has an answer to Michael Jordan, it’s Pelé. Few fans in America knew Edson Arantes do Nascimento by his given name, but Pelé achieved international fame for the skills that made him a three-time World Cup winner for his native Brazil.
Pelé takes on the daunting task of attempting to convey just how important its subject is to soccer. It covers a wide period of Pelé’s life, including his childhood and the last chapter of his career working with the New York Cosmos MLS team. Pelé wasn’t just a soccer player; he was an ambassador for the game who transcended sports. If you’ve never seen Pelé handle a ball or score, then you’re in for a treat. The archival footage of his games is a blast.
Before Shaquille O’Neal came to the Los Angeles Lakers to win three out of his four NBA championships, he was drafted by the Orlando Magic and nearly started a dynasty on the East Coast. In 1993, Shaq was paired with Penny Hardaway, a gifted player who seemed destined for superstar status. Together, they made the Magic one of the most exciting teams of the mid-’90s.
This Magic Moment takes a look back at Shaq and Hardaway’s time together as teammates and explores the high hopes that everyone had for their shared success. The documentary also revisits the way their partnership dissolved and how the Magic’s dream of a dominant NBA championship run never came to pass.
For romance readers, male/male ice hockey stories are nothing new, thanks to huge successes like Icebreaker by Hannah Grace and Him by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy. But it’s Rachel Reid’s 2019 Game Changer series – and namely its second instalment, Heated Rivalry – that’s bringing the genre to a whole new audience.
Brought to life by Jacob Tierney and Canadian streamer Crave, it’s also one of the best book adaptations I’ve had the pleasure of bingeing (more than once, I admit).

Heated Rivalry begins in 2008 and follows two rookie ice hockey players, “Ottawa’s own” Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Russia’s Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie), competing in the National Hockey League. Shane plays for the Montreal Metros while Ilya plays for their rival team, the Boston Raiders.
Both are formidable on the ice – Shane is unsociable, obsessively disciplined and has the highest hockey IQ in the game, while Ilya is cocky, a strong skater and knows just how to get under his opponents’ skin.

But it’s off the rink where Heated Rivalry truly comes alive. What begins as a lust-fuelled hook-up between sworn rivals gradually evolves into an emotionally charged, eight-year relationship that sears your heart and leaves you clamouring for more.
“Do I make you curious?” a steely Ilya asks Shane during one of their earliest encounters – and it’s a line that perfectly encapsulates the series. Enemies-to-lovers is a familiar trope, but Heated Rivalry offers something refreshing that even the most cynical romance viewer can’t resist.
Meeting up in secret after games, Shane and Ilya initially connect through sex – and there’s plenty of it, particularly in the first episode – but intimacy soon becomes their shared language when words and feelings feel out of reach.
Beyond hiding their attraction to the outside world – no active player in the NHL, both fictional or real, is openly out as gay – both men grapple with personal demons. For Ilya, it’s the crushing expectations of his Russian family, while Shane fights to maintain his Asian-Canadian role model image while slowly coming to terms with his sexuality. The result is a beautifully frustrating push-and-pull, fuelled by desire, fear and a whole lot of yearning.

Yes, the sex scenes are a major talking point, but it’s the quieter, more tender moments that linger the longest – like when Shane cradles Ilya’s jacket like it’s the most precious thing in the world, or when Ilya strokes a hesitant hand to Shane’s bruised cheek. Even at its most explicit, the series handles intimacy with care – from the thoughtful choreography and lighting to Ilya’s constant verbal check-ins around consent.
Several scenes have gone viral, from Ilya’s Russian monologue (kudos to Connor Storrie’s accent) to an infamous club sequence accompanied by the now-viral song All the Things She Said by t.A.T.u. And that’s all before the widely discussed cottage-set finale, which has since inspired “I’m coming to the cottage” merch hats.
Fans of the book will be pleased to know that the show follows the dialogue closely, with just a few welcome tweaks to chivvy the plot along and flesh out some of the supporting characters like Svetlana and Rose. The overall production – from script to costume (shoutout to Ilya’s tiger shirt) and soundtrack – feels slick, lived-in and sophisticated despite the modest budget and mere 37-day run of filming.

Much has been made of the show’s overwhelmingly female fanbase and what that reveals about what audiences actually crave from the romance genre. Perhaps it’s a portrayal of masculinity that feels softer, safer and more emotionally accessible – or the ease with which viewers can recognise themselves in both Shane and Ilya without complication.
Heated Rivalry has undeniably struck a chord, even inspiring people to focus on their fitness and reflect on their own romantic relationships. It’s giving viewers something they feel they haven’t seen before, and it’s utterly addictive. With seasons two and three already greenlit, all that’s left to say is: I guess I’ll see you next season.

The Mighty Nein is based on the second campaign of the popular Dungeons & Dragons web series, Critical Role. This might sound too niche, but the show manages to succeed as a terrific adult animated fantasy show for a wider audience. The Might Nein is set in the fantasy world of Exandria, as we follow a ragtag team of outcasts and fugitives. Together, this group has to save the realm from the power of a dark and ancient relic.
Although you might need to get acquainted with the preceding show, The Legend of Vox, in order to enjoy The Might Nein, that’s not a bad thing. The fantastic animation style, compelling story and emotional character drama of both shows are great to dig into for fans of fantasy, animation, Dungeons & Dragons and Critical Role.
Netflix viewers who tuned into Run Away, the eight-part mystery thriller starring Gavin & Stacey‘s Ruth Jones and Midsomer Murders‘ Annette Badland, are hooked after all eight episodes landed on the streamer on New Year’s Day.
The new series, which is based on Harlan Coben’s 2019 novel, follows a father called Simon, whose world turns upside down when his eldest daughter Paige (Ellie de Lange) runs away from home.
You know you’re in for a treat when a project comes from Harlan Coben, whose novels have inspired major on-screen hits like Netflix’s Fool Me Once and The Stranger, as well as Prime Video’s Lazarus.
Having seen the first two episodes ahead of launch, I can say that fans of twisty mystery thrillers with a clever sleuth will find plenty to enjoy. The show fits neatly into Netflix’s growing catalogue of Coben thrillers, which tend to favour twisty narratives and morally complex characters. Plus, with a cast including James Nesbitt, Ruth Jones, Minnie Driver and Alfred Enoch, how can you resist?

The show has gone down a treat with viewers, who have hailed it as “excellent” and are bingeing multiple episodes in one go in true Harlan Coben style.
“Going on to episode 6, it’s brilliant!!” penned one viewer on Instagram, while another wrote: “We’re on episode two and we’re hooked.” A third added: “Watched three episodes so far… so gripping.”
While it’s still early days, the show is currently sitting at an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In its four-star review, The Standard wrote: “James Nesbitt just about manages to hang onto our sympathies as Simon, and the sheer amount of camp melodrama we get delivered will go down nicely with a glass of Pepto-Bismol. Ahh… remember to keep those eyelids open.”
Meanwhile, Variety wrote: “Full of shocking twists and turns and gruesome violence, which are par for the course with all of Coben’s works, the show is an entertaining maze from its opening scene until the close.”
The series follows multiple interconnecting plotlines, but first centres on Simon, who was living a perfect life before his eldest daughter Paige ran away and everything fell apart.
The synopsis continues: “So now when he finds her, vulnerable and strung out on drugs in a city park, he finally has the chance to bring his little girl home. But it turns out she’s not alone, and an argument escalates into shocking violence.
“In the aftermath, Simon loses his daughter all over again, and his search to find her will take him into a dangerous underworld, revealing deep secrets that could tear his family apart forever.”
Speaking to press ahead of its release, James Nesbitt said: “To play this part, and the relentlessness of it, was a privilege, but also to then have the relationship that Simon has with Elena [Ruth Jones’s character] was very important. And it kind of came, I think, at a good time for both of us, not only in terms of finding the parts that you were playing, but also because you just need to have a bit of enjoyment in it.”
When asked what it was like to work with James, Ruth added: “I hadn’t worked with Jimmy before and I was a little trepidatious about it because I’ve always been a big admirer of his work and think he’s a brilliant actor and I felt slightly fraudulent.
“But instantly we just seemed to click and I think it’s a really lovely on-screen relationship because, spoiler alert, it’s not a romance, but I think that’s quite refreshing.”

AJ is best known for hosting ITV’s Big Brother, Celebrity Big Brother and Channel 4’s Married at First Sight: Afters.
Reflecting on her experience, AJ summed it up in one word: “Magical,” she said. “Truly magical. Going to Lapland is a bucket-list experience for so many people, and I got to tick it off while being part of something that gives back. To combine that sense of fun, adventure, and teamwork with raising money for such an important charity, it doesn’t get better than that.”
The Irish presenter is known for her turn on Strictly Come Dancing in 2023, co-hosting the Get A Grip podcast with Vicky Pattison and presenting shows including The One Show and Robot Wars.
Speaking about her experience on the festive special, Angela told the BBC: “[It was] absolute chaos from beginning to end, but the most joyful chaos I have had in my life in a while, just brilliant. Honestly, I felt like I was back at school doing some sort of weird transition year project, which we were all ill-equipped for, but you know, no less committed. So yeah, brilliant. Absolutely loved it! Now go and buy our biscuit!”
Charlie is part of the BBC Radio 1 trio Rickie, Melvin and Charlie and has also presented Dance Anthems on Radio 1 Dance.
Explaining the “once in a lifetime experience”, Charlie said: “I’m so grateful to have been asked to do this for Children in Need. I cannot tell you how grateful I am. I feel blessed that I was a part of the experience and also just to have an insight into The Apprentice. As a viewer, I watch the show and it’s just mesmerising. So it was amazing to watch what goes on behind the scenes and how everyone works. And actually I think the production team needs a massive big-up because they’re some of the very best people I’ve ever worked with.”
Fresh from the jungle on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, Eddie is also a stand-up comedian and presenter on BBC Radio 1Xtra.
Eddie called his stint on The Celebrity Apprentice “one of the best moments of my career”, before adding: “I certainly didn’t expect the hospitality, the way we were looked after, the fun that we had. Karren, Mike and Lord Sugar were so kind. For me, it’s something I will hold dear because I made some really, really good friends out of it as well. Which is what is it is all about.”
Best known as Max Branning on EastEnders, Jake also co-hosts the boxing podcast Pound For Pound with Spencer Oliver.
“I’ve met Lord Sugar a couple of times before, so I felt at an advantage really,” said Jake. “So I wasn’t as intimidated as some of the others, I would maybe say. But of course going into that boardroom is iconic and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to be sat there with the whole team and to go through the full process that they actually go through on the show, and to get an insight into the reality of designing a product and the packaging and the name and the jingle in the TV advert, to do all of those things was amazing.”
Best known as one quarter of the boy band JLS, JB first found fame on The X Factor back in 2008, before the band split in 2013. Now, he enjoys life on a farm in Kent and has presented Down on the Farm (2015) and Songs of Praise (2017).
Reflecting on his approach to the festive special, JB said: “I can’t say I was scared of Lord Sugar himself, but I had no idea what to expect. His reputation precedes him. But I ultimately wanted to get the best product or complete the task in the best fashion. So it was all very much an open book, let me go in there, see what it is, do what I do best, and be myself, and then we’ll see what happens.”
Kadeena is a successful parasport athlete, having won two gold medals at the 2016 Summer Paralympics for C4-5 cycling and T38 sprint. In 2021, she braved the jungle on ITV’s I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! and became the winner of the sixteenth series of BBC’s Celebrity MasterChef.
Speaking about when she received the news that she’d be on Celebrity Apprentice, Kadeena said she felt “predominantly excited because it was for Children in Need, which is such a massive charity and something I celebrate every year and try to be a part of that.”
She continued: “Plus, the show is amazing, it’s so well known. And honestly, a part of me just wanted to be fired by Lord Sugar. I wanted the finger pointed at me!”
Matt, who operates as Legend on the BBC’s Gladiators, is a bodybuilder and fitness coach, best known for his over-confident alter-ego on the endurance sports game show.
His trademark confidence seems to have carried over into his game plan for the boardroom, as he said: “The Apprentice is an iconic show and ultimately I knew I’d be good at it, so it felt like the perfect opportunity to showcase my entrepreneurial ability. The fact it’s for Children in Need was a huge bonus. To have a great time, win a competition and raise a lot of money for such a great cause is pretty incredible.”
TV star and barrister Rob is best known for fronting Judge Rinder, as well as co-hosting BBC’s travel show Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour alongside Rylan Clark.
When asked why he chose to go on Celebrity Apprentice, Rob revealed: “Because normally I’m the one doing the firing or at least the sentencing. I thought it was time to sit on the other side of the table, where the worst that can happen is Lord Sugar’s withering pronouncement that ‘you’re fired,’ not ten years at Her Majesty’s pleasure.”
Miranda actress and chummy Sarah is best known for starring opposite Miranda Hart on the hit sitcom, as well as competing on Strictly in 2024 with her professional dance partner Vito Coppola.
Sarah admitted she was nervous going into the process, explaining: “At one point Tom [Skinner] said, ‘We’re all businesspeople here,’ and I thought, ‘I’m not! Please don’t ask me what business I have’. Nothing, the business of show, Lord Sugar! It’s definitely not my comfort zone, my instinct is to make things funny. I did barrel in on the first day and said, ‘Hello!’. All three of them looked at me like I was mad. Quite quickly you realise you have got to have serious answers.”
Shazia is a British comedian, actress and writer, best known for being a panellist on Channel 5’s The Wright Stuff and appearing on Channel 4’s Celebrity The Island with Bear Grylls and SAS: Who Dares Wins.
A long-time fan of the show, Shazia explained why she said yes: “Because it was for Children in Need, so it was for charity and I wanted to do that. And also I’ve watched the show for a very, very, very long time and I’ve always found it very funny. So I thought, I think this could be a really funny thing to do.”
From the Strictly ballroom to Lord Sugar’s boardroom, Tom first appeared on the civilian version of The Apprentice back in 2019, and recently appeared on Strictly Come Dancing with his professional partner Amy Dowden.
Speaking on his return, Tom said: “Look, I absolutely loved going on The Apprentice. The process, the first time I went on it back in 2019, it changed my life, completely changed my life. I got married since, I’ve got three beautiful children, and I’ve got so much to thank the show and the producers and everyone from that experience, and it’s just an honour to be able to come back and this time have a bit of fun and raise some money for Children in Need.”

What more can be said about Sinners? A big box office hit, it’s also one of the most acclaimed movies of the year. That makes sense as the movie works as both an extremely entertaining vampire flick and a subtle commentary about racism and immigration in America. Director Ryan Coogler is a real virtuoso filmmaker — every shot serves a purpose, and almost every line of dialogue matters. A visual treat and a bloody good time, Sinners will make you believe in vampires again — and that studios can still make great big-budget genre movies.
Sometime in the near future, AI has decimated a large part of the United States and, as a result, is banned throughout most of the world. New Asia, however, continues to use it to sustain their society, which puts it at odds with an increasingly aggressive U.S.-led resistance. Enter Sergeant Joshua Taylor (John David Washington), who is tasked by the U.S. military to locate a weapon that could destroy their defenses.
It doesn’t take Josh long to find the weapon, but, much to his surprise, the weapon takes the form of a young girl, Alphie (Madeleine Yuna), who has the power to control all technology. Because Alphie is an innocent bystander in all of this, Taylor is faced with a dilemma — can he kill an innocent for the greater good? And can anyone really “kill” Alphie, who isn’t really alive?
The Creator tackles classic sci-fi themes like humanity vs. technology, but places them in a slick package that utilizes every tool in the filmmaking toolbox to create its futuristic world. The visual effects were nominated for an Academy Award, and it’s the true star of The Creator. From the look of New Asia to a thrilling third act set in outer space, the special effects will make you believe in a future ruled by computers and minimalist aesthetics.
Rom-coms have long been a successful genre since the 1930s, but very few of them have been nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. One of the few exceptions was Four Weddings and a Funeral, which was nominated alongside such classics as Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption. Seen today, it fully deserved its nomination as it remains one of the funniest — and most romantic — movies ever made.

Charles (Hugh Grant) is a terminally single Londoner who is cursed with attending one wedding after another involving people he barely knows. His fortunes change when he meets Carrie (Andie MacDowell), a free-spirited American who reciprocates his advances. They fall quickly in lust and maybe love, but there’s just one small problem — Carrie is already engaged. As Charles moves from one wedding to another and then to an unplanned funeral, he’s forced to question why he can’t quite meet his perfect match.
The earth is being threatened by an extremely dangerous natural phenomenon that mankind could, theoretically, stop. Yet somehow, it seems like no one in power is doing anything about it. This is the premise of Don’t Look Up, a climate change allegory from Anchorman director Adam McKay. Leonardo DiCaprioand Jennifer Lawrence play Dr. Randall Mindy and Kate Dibiasky, two astronomers who discover a cataclysmic, “planet-killer” comet hurtling towards Earth. They try to sound the alarm, only to find that getting the government to take action to protect its citizens is shockingly difficult.
The cast of Don’t Look Up is a laundry list of A-listers, from Meryl Streep as a clueless president to Timothée Chalamet as a young shoplifter who befriends Kate. As the crisis nears, Dr. Mindy becomes a celebrity while Dibiasky becomes a target for hate and derision. The more people talk about the comet, the further they seem to get away from doing anything about it. The whole story feels simultaneously fantastical, funny, and all too real.
During the COVID-19 years, many films were released that entirely flew under the radar, and as a result, ended up flopping at the box office.
One such film was Hugh Jackman’sReminiscence, in which he stars in alongside Rebecca Ferguson and Thandiwe Newton. However, the film has since found new life after being added to streaming services, including Apple TV+, and fans have been singing its praises.
A synopsis for the film read: “Nick Bannister, a private investigator of the mind, navigates the darkly alluring world of the past by helping his clients access lost memories. Living on the fringes of the sunken Miami coast, his life is forever changed as he uncovers a violent conspiracy while trying to solve the mystery behind a client who disappeared.”
However, with a confusing release schedule, the film was pushed back on several occasions to avoid competing with other major releases, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the film barely registered at the box office. It had been estimated by Variety that the film needed $110 million to break even, however, it only made $16.4 million.
Fan response
Viewers have been receptive to the 2021 film, with one writing on social media: “Reminiscence – a beautiful movie that deserved the attention of moviegoers. Too bad WB chose to experiment with their release policy for this one. A memorable portrayal from Hugh Jackman – action cum romance cum drama!”
A second added: “I genuinely thought Reminiscence was going to be a big hit with Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Ferguson especially with the trailer,” while a third commented: “Reminiscence never fails to make me sad. I need Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Ferguson to get a third movie where they both end up together and happy at the end,” and a fourth posted: “Someday, Reminiscence will have the renaissance that it deserves.“
However, film critics were less than complimentary about the movie. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film only has a 37% rating, with its consensus reading: “Although Reminiscence isn’t lacking narrative ambition, its uncertain blend of sci-fi action and noir thriller mostly provokes memories of better films.“
The Guardian’s Simran Hans only gave the film a two-star rating, calling it a “sci-fi noir you may want to forget”. Meanwhile, in a separate two-star review, Outtake Magazine’s Stanyo Zhelev said: “It has its moments and you probably won’t regret watching it – but it’s incredibly frustrating to see, it has all the ingredients of something truly special, yet never really pulls it off.”
Some critics, including in the Chicago Sun-Times, unfavourably compared the film to hits like The Maltese Falcon, Inception and Vanilla Sky.
Who stars in Reminiscence?
Reminiscence has an A-list cast, with its leads being played by Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Rebecca Ferguson (Dune) and Thandiwe Newton (Line of Duty). It marked the second time that Hugh and Rebecca had acted opposite one another, following 2017’s The Greatest Showman.
The film also stars Cliff Curtis (The Meg), Marina de Tavira (Roma), Daniel Wu (Into the Badlands), Mojean Aria (The Enforcer), Brett Cullen (The West Wing), Natalie Martinez (Ordinary Joe) and Angela Sarafyan (Westworld).
Alongside its incredible cast, the film was also the directorial debut for Lisa Joy, who had previously directed Westworld, while also writing for the likes of Pushing Daisies and Burn Notice. Since 2024, she has been the executive producer for Prime Video’s smash hit, Fallout.
