For decades, Sean “Diddy” Combs was a powerful force in the music industry as a performer a record executive/producer.

As Puff Daddy and P. Diddy, Combs was a superstar. Diddy had his run-ins with the law before, but none as serious as his 2024 arrest and subsequent federal trial and conviction.

Now, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is set to debut his Diddy documentary, Sean Combs: The Reckoning, on Netflix.

The premiere of this four-episode docuseries is just days away, and Watch With Us is sharing everything you need to know about Sean Combs: The Reckoning.

When Will ‘Sean Combs: The Reckoning’ Stream on Netflix?

Netflix has set a December 2 premiere date for Sean Combs: The Reckoning, and all four episodes will be released on that day. Jackson is executive producing the documentary alongside its director, Stacy Scripter. The documentary will touch upon Diddy’s rise in the music industry as the founder of Bad Boy Entertainment, as well as his role in discovering talents like Mary J. Blige, Jodeci and Danity Kane.

The documentary will feature testimonials and interviews with Combs’ childhood friends, ex-associates, former employees and artists he was associated with who paint a darker picture of his musical ascent. It will also focus on the allegations made against Diddy and how the latest case against him has caused the music empire he built to crumble and fall around him. It’s been a fall from grace that’s happened in full view of the public. But there are still plenty of details that haven’t emerged yet, and the documentary’s team may shed more light on the subject.

What Crimes Was Diddy Convicted of?

Diddy was on trial between May 5 and July 2 of this year, where he faced charges of federal sex trafficking, transportation to engage in prostitution and racketeering. The jury found him not guilty on the two most serious charges, racketeering and sex trafficking.

However, that was the extent of any good news for Diddy that came out of the trial. The jury found him guilty of transportation to engage in prostitution, and Diddy was subsequently sentenced to 50 months in prison, not counting time already served. Barring a Presidential pardon, that’s where Diddy will be staying for the immediate future.

Is There a Personal Feud Between 50 Cent and Diddy?

It certainly seems personal, doesn’t it? The animosity between the two goes back nearly two decades, when 50 Cent’s 2006 diss track, “The Bomb,” leveled the explosive allegation that Diddy was involved with the murder of Notorious B.I.G. in 1997. For the record, Diddy denied those charges. 50 Cent also says that he’s been talking about Diddy’s sexual misconduct for a decade, and he couldn’t resist trolling him during the trial.

For now, it’s unclear if 50 Cent actively participated on-camera for the documentary, or if he simply executive-produced the show and remained behind the scenes. Either way, with Diddy incarcerated, 50 Cent will essentially get the last word in through the show.

Amazon Prime Video tapped into some of its classic movies for November, and its lineup is unusually strong.

There aren’t many months when the lowest film in a list of five movies has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93 percent.

5. ‘Vertigo’ (1958)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93 percent

Alfred Hitchcock thrillers are some of the best movies you’ll ever see, and Vertigo is no exception. Hollywood icon James Stewart stars as John “Scottie” Ferguson, a police detective who develops a crippling sense of acrophobia after a harrowing rooftop chase. When Scottie retires to become a private detective, his fears come back to haunt him when he’s hired to follow a woman, Madeleine Elster (Kim Novak), whose husband claims she’s possessed.

Scottie is also thrown off his game by Judy Barton (Novak), a woman who is so similar to Madeleine that he’s almost convinced that he’s imagining the similarities between them. Almost. If Scottie’s going to uncover the connection between Madeleine and Judy, he’ll have to face his fears head-on.

4. ‘In the Heat of the Night’ (1967)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 96 percent

In the Heat of the Night was released during the Civil Rights movement, and Detective Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) was a fierce Black hero who broke new ground on the big screen. Tibbs didn’t bother to hide his intelligence, and his response to the racism he encountered in Sparta, Mississippi, was refreshingly frank. Tibbs wasn’t even supposed to be there, as he was on his way back to Philadelphia.

Tibbs is convinced to stay in town to help Police Chief Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger) solve a murder that’s rocked Sparta. When Tibbs angers some of the town’s residents, it puts his own life in jeopardy. Yet he won’t leave until he’s seen this case through to the end.

3. ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ (1947)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 96 percent

Yes, it’s a little early for Christmas movies that aren’t named Die Hard. But Miracle on 34th Street represents the very best of the Christmas movies. In the holiday season, Macy’s employee Doris Walker (Maureen O’Hara) has inadvertently found Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn), the best Santa actor the store has ever had.

Doris should be happy, but she’s also disturbed that Kris genuinely believes he is Santa Claus, and he’s also convinced her young daughter, Susan Walker (Natalie Wood). When Kris refuses to back down from his assertion, he faces imprisonment in a sanitarium unless Doris’ love interest, Fred Gailey (John Payne), can prove in a court of law that Kris Kringle is the one and only Santa.

Miracle on 34th Street is streaming on Prime Video.

2. ‘Double Indemnity’ (1944)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 97 percent

If you’ve ever wanted to see a prime example of film noir, Double Indemnity set the standard just over eight decades ago. Fred MacMurray stars as Walter Neff, an insurance salesman who plots with his client, Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck), to murder her husband, Mr. Dietrichson (Tom Powers), and make his death appear to be a suicide.

Neff’s coworker, Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson), is immediately suspicious of Phyllis, but he has a blind spot for his best friend. The real threat to Neff may be Phyllis herself, and she appears to be far more manipulative than he gave her credit for. They’ve already charted their path to Hell, so what’s one or two more bodies along the way?

1. ‘Good Will Hunting’ (1997)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 97 percent

If the acting thing hadn’t taken off for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, they could have fallen back on their careers as screenwriters. The pair starred in Good Will Hunting, which they also wrote, and it gave them Oscar gold for Best Original Screenplay. Robin Williams also won his only Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, thanks to his moving performance as a therapist, Sean Maguire.

Damon plays Will Hunting, an ex-con turned janitor at MIT whose mind can handle complex mathematics that even the college’s best students can’t grasp. Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgård) sees potential greatness in Will, who is ordered to attend sessions with Sean to overcome his anger issues. Affleck and Minnie Driver costar as Will’s friend, Chuckie Sullivan, and his lover, Skylar, respectively. They’re the people rooting for Will to get his life together, but he has to take some important steps by himself.

Good Will Hunting is streaming on Prime Video.

Netflix does a lot of things well, but it especially excels at keeping subscribers happy with a lot of shows to watch.

Rather than riding out the rest of 2025 on its own coattails, Netflix is bringing back two of its original shows for new seasons in November.

Both of those comedy series are among the three underrated Netflix shows you need to watch in November, as chosen by the Watch With Us team.

Our final selection is a recent arrival from a rival streamer that’s already become a breakout hit.

‘The Vince Staples Show’ (2024 – Present)

If you can picture a version of Curb Your Enthusiasm that’s even more surreal with some hilarious action scenes, you might get something close to The Vince Staples Show. In the tradition of Curb, Vince Staples plays a version of himself who lives in a very exaggerated take on our reality. It’s just close enough to be recognizable as our world, but it veers off into some unexpected comedic territory.

The recently premiered season 2 finds Staples mourning his Uncle James (Beau Billingslea), but the circumstances surrounding the latter’s will reading and funeral become increasingly bizarre. Staples also has to keep the peace between his mother, Anita Staples (Vanessa Bell Calloway), and his sister, Bri (Naté Jones), neither of whom is particularly interested in playing nice with each other. But some of the things Staples encounters this season make his warring family members seem tame by comparison.

‘Absentia’ (2017 – 2020)

Like Sneaky Pete before it, Absentia is a former Prime Video original series that’s been sent to a new home where it can become a lot more popular than it ever was on Amazon. It’s already cracked Netflix’s top 10 series, and reminded fans that Stana Katic is capable of doing a lot more than just lighthearted rom-com mysteries like Castle. In this series, Katic plays FBI Special Agent Emily Byrne, a woman who was declared dead in absentia, since she disappeared without a trace and her body was never found.

Six years later, Emily turns up alive without any memory of where she’s been or the man who abducted her. The world moved on without her, and so did Emily’s husband, Special Agent Nick Durand (Patrick Heusinger). When Nick believed that he brought Emily’s killer to justice, he moved on and married another woman. Now that Emily is back in his life, there are more questions than answers, especially after she’s framed for murder and forced to go on the run.

Absentia is streaming on Netflix.

‘A Man on the Inside’ (2024 – Present)

Four decades of starring in TV sitcoms have given Ted Danson the chance to do it all over again in A Man on the Inside. Danson plays Charles Nieuwendyk, a widowed man who finds a new purpose in life when a private detective, Julie Kovalenko  (Lilah Richcreek Estrada), hires him to go undercover in a retirement community to locate an extremely valuable ruby necklace.

Season 2 of the show is premiering on November 20, and it kicks off a new story for Charlie. His investigation at the Pacific View Retirement Community is over, but some of the friends he made there remain in his life as he’s drawn into another mystery. Danson’s real-life wife, Mary Steenburgen, is joining the cast this season as Charles’ new love interest, Mona Margadoff. Charles is understandably smitten with her, but her potential link to his new investigation may get their romance off on the wrong foot.

A Man on the Inside is streaming on Netflix.

Sports documentaries are nothing new on Amazon Prime Video, but the streamer has been getting a lot more of these.

Prime Video may not have as robust a selection of sports documentaries as its streaming rivals, but it does feature some of the biggest names in sports in their own documentaries.

This month, NFL running back Saquon Barkley and NBA legend Allen Iverson are both featured in fresh Prime Video documentaries.

‘Saquon’ (2025)

If you’ve ever seen the incredible footage of the Philadelphia Eagles player jumping over another player while facing the other way, that was running back Saquon Barkley. He’s made a name for himself in the NFL as one of the best in the game. But there was a time when it looked like his career was over.

Barkley tore his ACL five years ago, and his recovery was a real question mark. Saquon is essentially Barkley’s video diary during one of the most tumultuous times in his life as he left the New York Giants and found the glory he was looking for as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. And if you thought that his story couldn’t get any more extraordinary, the documentary even covers Barkley’s appearance in the 2025 Super Bowl, which happened to take place on his birthday.

‘Allen Iverson’ (2025)

During his playing days, Allen Iverson was unquestionably one of the best players in the NBA. He had a natural talent for basketball that few could match. But despite winning glory on the basketball court, Iverson suffered off the court, including a conviction for fighting that could have seen him spend five years behind bars, with his sentence was overturned.

 

The Allen Iverson documentary series gives its subject the time to reflect on his life and his impact on the game. Iverson may not have won an NBA championship, but he left a very big impact on the culture of the game.

‘Bye Bye Barry’ (2023)

During his NFL career, Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders was one of the best players in the game. Records seemed poised to fall as he consistently turned in outstanding numbers. At least until 1998, when Sanders abruptly retired without fanfare, and just before he would have hit big milestones.

Bye Bye Barry is a biographical documentary that lets Sanders fully explain where he was coming from when he made that decision. At the time, football fans in Detroit were less than forgiving about Sanders’ choices. But over time, his legacy has been secured.

‘Game 7: Cubs vs. Indians 2016’ (2025)

Game 7 is a loose connection of standalone films chronicling some of the most memorable playoff series in the history of baseball, hockey and basketball. All three of those sports use a playoff structure that can end in a decisive winner-takes-all game 7.

Cubs vs. Indians 2016 stands out from the rest as one of the greatest MLB playoff games in history. The contest had enough drama for a Hollywood movie, as it began with a home run and ended with a rain delay before heading into a decisive 10th inning. Going into the game, neither the Chicago Cubs nor the Cleveland Indians had won a World Series title in decades. By the end, one of those long losing streaks was broken.

‘One Man and His Shoes’ (2021)

Marketing endorsements have become a major part of sports in the last five decades, but none could match the meteoric rise depicted in One Man and His Shoes. Even now, we scarcely have to tell you that the one man is Michael Jordan, or that his Air Jordan shoes redefined sneakers for decades.

This could have just been a documentary about Nike blowing its own horn and enjoying its good fortune. Except this film wasn’t made with Nike’s participation, and it goes to some places that the shoemaker would probably like to forget. The company created such a demand for these shoes that some people have been killed for them. Getting robbed for a pair of Air Jordan shoes is a problem that persisted for decades, and some of the victims’ families get a chance to speak about that in this film.

‘Hugo Sánchez, the Goal and the Glory’ (2022)

Hugo Sánchez, the Goal and the Glory is a Spanish language documentary that explores the career of Hugo Sánchez, one of the greatest soccer players to emerge from Mexico, who is also widely considered to be among the best who ever played international football.

The documentary touches on most of the stops during Sanchez’s 20-plus years as a professional, including his stint with the prestigious Real Madrid team, where he cemented his reputation with a high number of goals each season.

‘The Identity Theft of Mitch Mustain’ (2015)

The title of The Identity Theft of Mitch Mustain is a bit misleading, since there isn’t any actual identity theft in it. Director Matthew Wolfe apparently chose it as a cheeky title while sharing the story of former college football quarterback Mitch Mustain.

At one point, Mustain was ranked the No. 1 high school quarterback in America, and he went undefeated during his initial college stop at Arkansas. But once Mustain transferred to USC, he never regained the same form or success he had earlier. This isn’t a story about a fall from grace, but it is an exploration of what can happen when the gulf between a player’s dreams and his reality is too far to bridge.

The Identity Theft of Mitch Mustain is streaming on Prime Video.

Nick Evans (Damon Wayans Jr.) is looking for love in all the wrong places. He subscribed to an online dating website called Love, Guaranteed to find companionship, and despite going on over 1,000 dates he’s still single and lonely. Fed up, he hires lawyer Susan Whitaker (Rachel Leigh Cook) to sue them for false advertising, but as the two work on the case they fall for each other. Is love guaranteed for Nick if he pursues Susan? 

Like most 2020 movies, Love, Guaranteed was overshadowed by COVID and lockdown drama. It deserves some love, though, due to its charming leads and unique plot. Everyone can relate to Nick’s frustrations with online dating, and the movie uses that as a way to bring its two reluctant lovebirds together. Love, Guaranteed also gives Wayans Jr. a rare lead role to show off his amazing comedic skills, which most fans of the cult TV show Happy Endings are already acutely aware of and appreciate. 

In the earliest years of his career, no other filmmaker had more consistent success with sci-fi movies than Steven Spielberg.

Since the mid-’90s, Spielberg has largely turned to more serious films. But in 2018, the director returned to his science fiction roots with Ready Player One.

The film is adapted from Ernest Cline‘s 2011 novel of the same name, and it may end up being the last sci-fi movie Spielberg ever helms.

Now that the film is back on Netflix, Watch With Us is sharing the three reasons you should watch Ready Player One in November.

The Young Cast Is Charming

Ready Player One is not the kind of movie that’s an actor’s showcase, especially since many of the performances are rendered as CGI animation. The film’s critics knocked the characters as underdeveloped, and they’re not wrong. Ready Player One‘s characters aren’t as compelling as the ones in some of Spielberg’s other movies. Ben Mendelsohn‘s villainous Nolan Sorrento is particularly one-dimensional, even though Mendelsohn himself is a great actor.

The film’s saving grace is its young leads, Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke, the latter of whom went on to star in HBO’s House of the Dragon. Sheridan plays Wade Watts, who goes by Parzival when he enters the virtual reality world called OASIS. Wade is a gifted player and the first one to discover how to advance in a contest that could determine who controls OASIS. Cooke portrays Samantha Cook/Art3mis, one of the players who joins forces with Wade to take down the IOI corporation and return the OASIS to the people. There are not really enough scenes of the pair together in the real world, but they do bring some life to the movie.

The OASIS Is Visually Stunning

The CGI look of the OASIS takes some getting used to, but it’s one of the film’s primary attractions. Parzival, Art3mis and the rest of their High Five team spend a lot of time there trying to decipher the clues left by the late co-creator of the OASIS, James Halliday (Mark Rylance). That leads to some visually dazzling scenes, including the racing sequence in the video above. Parzival uses the DeLorean from Back to the Future for his ride, and it’s a blast to see that car again.

Sometimes, the CGI in Ready Player One actually serves a more human purpose. Late in the movie, Rylance portrays Halliday’s digital avatar, who has the chance to share his regrets from beyond the grave. Rylance’s performance is so good in that scene that it gives the finale some unexpectedly poignant moments of humanity.

It’s an Overload of ’80s and ’90s Nostalgia

If you grew up during the ’80s or the ’90s, then you’re going to recognize a lot of the background details in Ready Player One. Cline’s novel piled on the references even more than the movie does, but Spielberg was limited to the characters he could get permission to use. In that sense, it echoes Who Framed Roger Rabbit with its sheer number of cameos, including the Iron Giant and a lot of video game characters.

We’re not going to spoil the specific details about the horror movie and the classic video game that factor into the film’s plot. But the former felt like this movie stepped back in time to another era, while the latter gave the game a more interesting look than it ever had on a gaming console. Ready Player One embraces nostalgia to a greater degree than most films. Not everyone enjoys that, but we found it fun to revisit the past. We just wouldn’t want to live there.

A new month means a new crop of shows that you can’t miss on streaming.

For this month, Watch With Us wants to highlight three Netflix shows that we think deserve your time, and all three of them just dropped new seasons last month.

The first show is the romantic comedy Nobody Wants This starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. We’ve also got the Keri Russell political drama The Diplomat, along with The Witcher, whose new season is the first since star Henry Cavill’s exit.

Read on for the lowdown on each show, and why you’d be wise to start bingeing them.

‘Nobody Wants This’ (2024-Present)

In this touching dramedy, Kristen Bell stars as Joanne — a sex positive agnostic who co-hosts a podcast about sex and dating with her sister Morgan (Succession‘s Justine Lupe). Joanne unexpectedly falls for Noah Roklov (Adam Brody), a rabbi whom she’s introduced to through friends. Despite the culture clash of their dueling beliefs, Joanne and Noah try to make their relationship work despite vastly different lives and families.

Nobody Wants This was highly praised by critics for its tackling of interfaith relationships in addition to its humor and fantastic chemistry between Bell and Brody. Season 2, which was just released on Netflix on October 23, also received positive reviews. It still manages to be sharp, insightful and emotionally resonant.

‘The Diplomat’ (2023-Present)

The initial premise of The Diplomat centers on career United States diplomat Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), who has just been appointed the US ambassador to the United Kingdom. Immediately plunged into the midst of an international crisis she has to defuse, Kate must balance strategic alliances while she adjusts to her new high-profile job. At the same time, her marriage to fellow diplomat Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) flounders as he struggles with a lack of posting while his wife takes the spotlight.

While The Diplomat initially received generally positive reviews for its first and second seasons, many critics have felt that the recent third season has been the show’s best. Amping up the political intrigue, character chemistry, emotional stakes and top-notch performances, The Diplomat’s third season establishes it as a wildly entertaining slice of melodrama.

‘The Witcher’ (2019-Present)

Based on the novel series of the same name, The Witcher follows three characters whose separate storylines eventually overlap within the medieval world known as the Continent. Geralt of Rivia (Liam Hemsworth) is a mutated monster hunter known as a “witcher,” Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalota) is a part-elf sorceress and Princess Ciri of Cintra (Freya Allan), who is linked by fate to Geralt.

Praised for its blend of compelling drama and fantasy fun, the third season of The Witcher arrives after the departure of Henry Cavill from the series due to “creative differences.” Hemsworth takes on the lead role of Geralt, and critics have felt that he does a great job of filling Cavill’s shoes. In addition to great action and a sharper narrative, Chalota was praised in particular for her performance as Yennefer this season, as the character becomes more satisfyingly fleshed out.

The Back to the Future franchise is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and the original movie is back in theaters this weekend.

Although Eric Stoltz was initially cast in Back to the Future, we can’t picture that movie without Michael J. Fox in the lead.

Fox made that film work, and it made him into a movie star.

5. ‘The Frighteners’ (1996)

Before The Lord of the Rings trilogy, director Peter Jackson teamed up with Fox for The Frighteners, a supernatural horror comedy. The film starts out as a riff on Ghostbusters, as Frank Bannister (Fox) presents himself as an exorcist who can keep ghosts from haunting a house. But it’s just a con Frank came up with alongside three ghosts he befriended: Stuart (Jim Fyfe), Cyrus (Chi McBride) and The Judge (John Astin).

Frank gained these powers after the unexplained death of his wife years earlier. That event ties into the present when Frank sees something that terrifies him. There’s a ghost dressed as a grim reaper who can kill both the living and the dead. The reaper’s next target is Frank’s latest client, Lucy Lynske (Trini Alvarado), and he can’t let her meet the same fate as his wife.

The Frighteners is streaming on Tubi.

4. ‘The Secret of My Success’ (1987)

By 1987, Fox had refined his comedic persona, and he put that to good use in The Secret of My Success. As a recent college graduate, Brantley Foster (Fox) can’t get a good job to save his life. So the only gig he can get is in the mail room of a company run by his uncle, Howard Prescott (Richard Jordan).

However, Brantley is too sharp to stay in the mail room forever, especially after he realizes that Howard is deliberately tanking the company. To secure his own future, Brantley passes himself off as a new company executive, Carlton Whitfield, and immediately makes an impact. Brantley’s faking it until he makes it, and he’s so charming that even Howard’s spy/mistress, Christy Wills (Helen Slater), is falling for him.

3. ‘Casualties of War’ (1989)

Drama isn’t necessarily Fox’s strong suit, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t spotlight one of the best performances of his career in Casualties of War. The film is based on a true story of an atrocity that occurred during the Vietnam War, and Fox plays Private First Class Max Eriksson, the one man in his unit who tried to stop it.

Max’s commanding officer, Sergeant Tony Meserve (Sean Penn), gives his men the order to find and kidnap a young woman, Tran Thi Oanh (Thuy Thu Le), so they can force themselves on her. Much to Max’s shock, no one else will speak up about the war crime in progress, leaving him ostracized from his fellow troops. But he won’t stop trying to do the right thing, even if it means betraying his unit, to help Tran escape and return to her family.

Casualties of War is streaming on Tubi.

2. ‘Doc Hollywood’ (1991)

Pixar’s Cars shamelessly lifted most of its plot from Fox’s comedy, Doc Hollywood. But we enjoyed the story more the first time. After completing his residency in Washington, D.C., Dr. Benjamin “Ben” Stone (Fox) is ready to take a high-paying gig as a plastic surgeon in Los Angeles. Or he was, before Ben gets sidetracked in a small town called Grady and is sentenced to community service.

Mayor Nick Nicholson (David Ogden Stiers) has high hopes that Ben will stick around and become the new town doctor. But if there’s anything or anyone who can change his mind, it’s Lou (Julie Warner), a single mom who immediately catches Ben’s eye. Ben’s from a small town, so it wouldn’t be a culture shock if he stayed. But it would mean giving up on his dreams of becoming a wealthy surgeon.

1. ‘Back to the Future’ Trilogy (1985 – 1990)

Let’s be honest: If we had separated the Back to the Future movies, then they would have taken up three spots on this list. The first film would be No. 1, of course. It’s better to just group them because these are the best movies of Fox’s career, and it’s not even close.

Across three films, Fox plays Marty McFly, a teenager who finds himself stuck 30 years in the past. After reuniting with his friend, Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown (Christopher Lloyd), Marty has to find a way back home to 1985 without jeopardizing his own existence. The two sequels added further complications to Marty and Doc’s misadventures in the history and future of Hill Valley.

Marty and Doc get a satisfying ending in Back to the Future Part III that always felt like the right place to leave things. Director Robert Zemeckis and screenwriter Bob Gale have steadfastly refused to reboot the franchise or go for another sequel. In Hollywood, that’s a very rare thing, and we appreciate their commitment to the trilogy.

Case in point — the new Danish thriller series The Asset, which surrounds a female police officer who becomes an undercover operative tasked with bringing down a vast criminal network by befriending the girlfriend of a powerful mob boss.

It’s an Incredibly Tense, Fast-Paced Thrill-Ride

The Asset follows Tea (Clara Dessau), a recovering addict who comes from a difficult background, attempting to turn her life around by joining the police force. But Denmark’s Security and Intelligence Service wants her as an undercover agent to topple a powerful crime lord and get close to his inner circle — thereby plunging Tea right back into the world she struggled to leave behind.

With high emotional stakes and intense drama, The Asset moves along at a brisk, exciting clip. It takes a familiar formula and creates something incredibly sharp and entertaining. At only six episodes, the series has to move quickly, and it not only does so with style and impact, but it also feels perfectly well-executed within these runtime confines. The Asset isn’t likely to make any new espionage thriller converts, but fans of the genre will find something new within the old.

The Characters Are Both Morally Complex and Well-Acted

The Asset isn’t interested in characters that are good or bad, but rather ones who live in the grey area between the two. For example, the criminal whom Tea is assigned to cozy up to, Miran (Afshin Firouzi), is not only a criminal but an abuser as well, yet the audience feels some empathy towards the affections he shows for his brother and daughter. So, too is Miran’s brother, Bambi (Arian Kashef), a complicated figure, boxed in by the devotion he feels for Miran.

Additionally, Tea’s government handlers walk a line that blurs justice and exploitation, as their dogged efforts to take down a bad guy seem to supersede Tea’s safety. Dessau does excellent work within this push and pull, as she finds her dual identities beginning to bleed together, tormenting her and threatening her life.

‘The Asset’ Focuses on the Emotional Consequences of Undercover Work

Tea is chosen for her assignment not because of her talent or skills, but because of her vulnerability to the circumstances. Her government handlers view her as weak due to her status as a recovering drug addict from a troubled upbringing, and therefore, she is easily replaceable if need be. Ultimately, her character becomes an example of how the state exploits methods of justice by using people as its own weapons.

Thus, The Asset is interested in the material effects of intelligence work on agents, depicting the psychological and emotional consequences of forcing someone to live behind an identity that is not their own. When the main objective seems to be control as opposed to equity, the victims are not just those of criminals but those who are being abused by their government. The Asset forces viewers to question the extent to which justice should be sought and the sacrifices made in its name.

The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White plays Springsteen at a pivotal point in the musician’s career, and this film is already generating awards buzz.

Surprisingly, all but one of our picks were made in the 21st century, even though music biopics have been around for decades. But each of these films rightly earned its place on this list.

5. ‘Elvis’ (2022)

Director and cowriter Baz Luhrmann spared no expense with Elvis, a lavish retelling of the life of Elvis Presley. Austin Butler was Oscar-nominated for his transformative performance as the King, and the film tracks his life from the beginning of his career all the way to the end. Butler is so good in the role that it’s hard to picture anyone else playing Elvis afterwards.

Tom Hanks also has a large role in the film as Colonel Tom Parker, the man who guided Elvis on the path to stardom. Parker doesn’t always have Elvis’ best interests at heart, but nothing could stop Presley from marrying the love of his life, Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge), even though she was underage when they first met. The drama of his life is intriguing, but it’s the music of Elvis that remains timeless.

4. ‘A Complete Unknown’ (2024)

Like Butler, Timothée Chalamet is overdue for an Oscar after only securing a Best Actor nomination for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. This film had eight nominations from the Academy Awards, and it didn’t win a single one. But it’s still one of the best music biopics we’ve ever seen.

The story only follows Dylan through his earliest years as a recording artist, as he chaffed against the expectations of the industry and his fans. Dylan also becomes close to music icons Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro) and Johnny Cash (Boyd Holbrook) while neglecting his bond with his girlfriend, Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning). Dylan’s not a perfect guy, and he makes some bad choices, but the music he made in this period shaped his legend for decades to come.

A Complete Unknown is streaming on Hulu.

3. ‘La Bamba’ (1987)

Have you ever heard of the day the music died? Don McLean coined the phrase in his song, “American Pie,” in reference to the 1959 plane crash that claimed the lives of Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and J. P. Richardson, aka “The Big Bopper.”

La Bamba touches on that incident, but it’s also a joyous account of the life of Valens (Lou Diamond Phillips), who was only 17 when he died. The film revisits Valens’ rise to fame as well as his occasionally complex relationship with his half-brother, Roberto “Bob” Morales (Esai Morales). It also tells the story of Valens and the great love of his life, Donna Ludwig (Danielle von Zerneck), whose first name was immortalized in one of his hit songs.

2. ‘Walk the Line’ (2005)

Director James Mangold helmed two of the films on this list: A Complete Unknown and Walk the Line. Both are great movies, but the latter is elevated by the Oscar-nominated performance of Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash and the Oscar-winning performance of Reese Witherspoon as June Carter. More impressively, both Phoenix and Witherspoon actually sang the songs featured in the film.

Cash’s legend unfolds in front of the audience as the film revisits the tragedies of his life, his rise to fame and his debilitating addictions that destroyed his first marriage to Vivian Cash (Ginnifer Goodwin). Carter was Cash’s second wife, and arguably the one who saved him from his demons.

1. ‘Straight Outta Compton’ (2015)

Straight Outta Compton is one of the rare contemporary music biopics to become a massive box office hit. Director F. Gary Gray cast O’Shea Jackson Jr. — the son of Ice Cube — to play his father in the story of the N.W.A.’s rise and fall as one of the most important hip-hop groups in the history of the genre.

In the ’90s, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins) and Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell) defy all expectations when the N.W.A becomes incredibly popular. However, the group is splintered by betrayals and hurt feelings that lead to heated rivalries even as their collective star power continues to increase. Without the N.W.A. to pave the way, many of the biggest names in hip-hop and rap may never have had the chance to shine.

Is ‘No One Saw Us Leave’ Based on a True Story?

Yes. No One Saw Us Leave is based on author Tamara Trottner‘s 2020 autobiography of the same name. It details the ordeal she experienced as a child in her wealthy Jewish-Mexican family, when she and her brother were taken from their mother by their father. The first line of the book is as follows: “I have just turned five. This is the last day of my childhood.”

The autobiography details this parental kidnapping, in which her father relocated them multiple times to different countries around the world over the span of three years, all to keep them from their mother. No One Saw Us Leave chronicles a crime, yes, but it isn’t exactly what you’d called “true crime.” It’s a little more complicated than that, a bit more nuanced. It’s a human, character-driven story.

‘No One Saw Us Leave’ Explores Several Complex Themes

No One Saw Us Leave isn’t just thrills and child abduction for the macabre fascination of it all — it’s also a deeply complicated look at several themes about motherhood, memory, class dynamics and patriarchal power. When Valeria Goldberg (Tessa Ia) missteps in her marriage, her husband Leo (Emiliano Zurita) begins scheming to get his children away from her. The son of an influential businessman, Leo’s family wants nothing more than to ruin his wife’s reputation and ostracize her from her community.

It’s an interesting look at a wealthy woman’s place during the 1960s, and how societal pressures, expectations, desire to be the perfect mother and fear of stigma ultimately lead Valeria to do what she does and instantly fall out of favor among her elite, insular community. One false move, one faltering in the facade of perfection, and the rich will instantly cannibalize each other.

The Plot is a Globe-Trotting Thrill Ride

When Leo takes his children away from Valeria, they move to numerous countries around the globe over the span of multiple years — and so Valeria follows suit. Alongside the characters, viewers are transported to several countries like South Africa, France and Israel as Leo stays on the move and Valeria follows him.

Shortly after Valeria realizes that her children are gone, she hires a former Mossad agent and current private investigator named Elías to help her track them down. Thus, we travel the world with Valeria, Leo and the kids in a tragic game of cat-and-mouse. In the meantime, Valeria also battles with Leo’s family back in Mexico, who are doing everything they can to destroy their daughter-in-law’s reputation.

The Five-Episode Arc Keeps Things Tight and Concise

Sometimes, limited true crime series can suffer from going overboard on the episodes, stretching out a relatively short plot longer than it needs to be, padding out overwrought character moments and contrived storytelling. And while No One Saw Us Leave adds some shoehorned melodrama to make a real story even better suited for the screen, the restrained nature of the season length makes for a taut, tight narrative.

The episodes don’t just feature the present chase between Valeria and Leo, but include numerous flashbacks to uncover the fraught couple’s arranged marriage and its slow unraveling. Context is needed for the series’ predicament to hold the necessary amount of complexity and emotional weight, but No One Saw Us Leave never overdoes it. Doling out just the right amount of information, stakes and suspense to keep the plotting at just the right pace, all leading to an immensely satisfying conclusion.

The Old Guard is a superhero story meets covert ops and military, but without any capes or costumes. The superpowered beings at the heart of the film are a mysterious group of immortal beings, led by Andromache or “Andy” (Charlize Theron), who have secretly protected humanity for millennia. As they struggle to maintain their anonymity, they must also contend with the emergence of a new immortal, Nile (KiKi Layne). Together, the team faces both modern threats and age-old enemies in their quest to preserve secrecy about their identities and ensure security for the future.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who previously created much quieter movies like The Secret Life of Bees and Beyond the Lights, The Old Guard has an emotional depth that you might not expect from a superhero action film. The themes of sacrifice and guilt are grounded by Theron’s stellar performance, as well as those of Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli and Chiwetel Ejiofor. With its blend of thought-provoking elements and adrenaline-pumping action, The Old Guard offers a refreshing take on the genre, providing both entertainment and substance for viewers. A sequel is now streaming, so now is the perfect time to watch the original.
