things you can say to encourage a child

    by TeachThought Staff

There are many ways to encourage a child, but for students of any age, honest, authentic, and persistent messages from adults that have credibility in their eyes are among the most powerful.

The National Center on Quality Teaching and Learning has put together the following list, 50 Ways To Encourage A Child. It was designed for younger students (head start/kindergarten), but with the exception of 4, 17, 21, and maybe 40, they’re actually useful for K-12 in general. It all depends on your tone, the situation, and who else is listening.

In addition, they’ve got a couple of other useful documents under their tips for fostering teacher connections series you can check out as well.

Justin Trudeau on Stephen Colbert: It’s a ‘tough time’ for Canadians – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wants Americans to know Canada has more to offer than just “maple syrup and mountains.”

During a Monday night appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the Canadian political leader got laughs from the audience as he tried to set Canada apart from the U.S. and boast about what makes the northern nation successful on the world stage.

There were also several more sombre moments from Trudeau’s appearance, with the prime minister noting it’s a “tough time” for many Canadians. Part of the night’s conversation focused on far-right nationalism and growing political division among people in both Canada and the U.S.

Colbert said Trudeau’s main political opponent, Conservative Party of Canada Leader Pierre Poilievre, has been called “the Trump of Canada.”

In response, Trudeau said Canada is not exempt from extremist rhetoric or xenophobia. He did not cite any specific examples.

“We’re not some magical place of unicorns and rainbows all the time,” he said. “The things that we’ve managed to do, we’ve had to work really, really hard at.”

Trudeau mentioned universal health care, ongoing efforts against climate change and dental care for low-income Canadians as policies that “we have to fight for” continually.

“There’s a big argument right now about whether dental care even exists,” Trudeau said. “We’ve delivered it to 700,000 people across the country and my opponent is gaslighting us and saying, ‘Dental care doesn’t even exist yet.’”

Earlier this month, Conservative MP Stephen Ellis said the government has failed in the delivery of subsidized dental care and claimed most Canadians don’t qualify for coverage or must still pay out of pocket for services.

    Story continues below advertisement

The Canada Dental Care Plan is accepting applications from people over the age of 65, for children under the age of 18 and those who receive the Disability Tax Credit. Applicants need to be confirmed, and then will be enrolled with Sun Life which manages the means-tested plan, which is open to those whose adjusted family net income is less than $90,000 per year and who don’t have access to dental care programs through employer plans, private coverage, or student or pension benefits.

Trudeau’s appearance comes as he is set to face a vote on a non-confidence motion in the House of Commons, put forward by the Conservatives on Tuesday and coming to a vote on Wednesday. If the vote is lost, Canada could see a snap election, but the NDP and Bloc Quebecois have indicated they will support the Liberals in defeating the motion.

“It’s a really tough time for people in Canada right now,” Trudeau said. “People are hurting. People are having trouble paying for groceries, paying for rent, filling up the tank.”

“People are frustrated and the idea that maybe they want an election now is something that my opponents are trying to bank on because people are taking a lot out on me, for understandable reasons,” he said. “I’ve been here, and I’ve been steering us through all these things and people are sometimes looking at change.”

    Story continues below advertisement

The prime minister said he will “keep fighting” to support Canadians and added that “Canada’s the best country in the world.”

Trudeau described the country’s “beautiful” wilderness and scenery, but maintained “Canada is about the people.”

“It’s a range of people from every possible background who come together and — a little different from the melting pot in the United States where everyone gets to be American — we try to celebrate differences, and people keep their cultures and keep their languages.”

Trudeau tells Colbert: ‘Canada’s the best country in the world’

Colbert, while noting that Canada is America’s “closest ally,” asked Trudeau what the two nations fight about.

The prime minister said there are many “small issues that matter” between both countries, but claimed the U.S. pays too much in tariffs on softwood lumber.

    Story continues below advertisement

This summer, the U.S. announced a 14.54 per cent duty rate on Canadian softwood lumber imports — an increase from the former 8.05 per cent tariff.

Colbert half-joked that many Americans also cross the U.S.-Canada border to buy cheaper drugs outside of the country.

“We’re happy to try and help you out, but it would be a lot easier if you guys had universal health care,” Trudeau said, earning cheers from the in-studio audience.

In lighter moments from Trudeau’s Late Show appearance, he joked Canadians, despite the stereotype for always saying “sorry,” would not apologize for the nominal differences between bacon and back bacon (or as Americans call it, Canadian bacon).

Trudeau has been Canada’s prime minister since 2015. This week, he travelled to New York City ahead of the 79th United Nations General Assembly. This year marks the UN’s first-ever Summit of the Future, which gathers world leaders to discuss themes including peace and security, sustainable development, climate change and human rights.

Trudeau said attending the General Assembly makes him feel both more and less hopeful about the future.

“You have to be fundamentally hopeful in this job, and particularly in this time where challenges are monumental,” he said of politicians. “But if you don’t believe you can actually work with others and make a positive difference, then you’re not in the right line of work.”

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs: Feds share details of ‘freak offs,’ AR-15s, baby oil – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

NOTE: The following article contains disturbing content. Please read at your own discretion.

Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs was arrested Monday night and indicted on federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges that accuse him of hitting and abusing women for over a decade and presiding over an empire of sexual crimes.

In a federal indictment unsealed Tuesday, Combs was charged with racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. The charges are tied to so-called “freak offs,” coerced sex acts that Combs allegedly orchestrated and recorded.

Standing to speak, after listening to the allegations while showing little reaction, his uncuffed hands folded in his lap, Combs pleaded not guilty.

The judge denied Combs bail and ordered he be sent to jail while awaiting trail.

In deciding to deny Combs bail, Judge Robyn F. Tarnofsky said she has “very significant concerns” about Combs’ substance abuse and “what appears to be anger issues.”

    Story continues below advertisement

Tarnofsky said she considered alternatives but doesn’t think it’s sufficient because so much of what’s alleged happened behind closed doors.

Earlier, Combs offered to post a US$50 million bond to be released from custody and also offered to wear a GPS monitor while limiting travel to New York City and Miami, according to a proposed bail package filed by his defence team.

Detailing allegations dating back to 2009, the indictment accuses him of abusing, threatening and coercing women for years “to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct.”

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, whose office is bringing the case, spoke about the allegations against Combs at a news conference Tuesday morning, mentioning the “freak offs” at least five times in under 20 minutes.

“Combs allegedly planned and controlled the sex performances, which he called ‘freak offs’ and he often electronically recorded them,” Williams told reporters, saying that federal prosecutors claimed they seized more than 1,000 bottles of personal lubricant and baby oil from Combs’ property and that these were used in the sex acts.

    Story continues below advertisement

“The ‘freak offs’ sometimes lasted days at a time, involved multiple commercial sex workers, and often involved a variety of narcotics such as ketamine, ecstasy and GHB, which Combs distributed to the victims to keep them obedient and compliant,” Williams explained.

Combs is also accused of hitting, kicking and throwing objects at victims, causing injuries that often took weeks to heal. It’s also alleged that he choked his victims, dragged them by their hair and threw people around.

Standing in front of a display board, Williams also shared images of some of the items authorities say were recovered in the searches, including AR-15s and a drum magazine containing dozens of rounds of ammunition.

Williams said two of the three AR-15s were taken from Combs’ bedroom closet in his Miami home, and had been broken down into parts. He said the serial numbers on the guns had been obscured.

    Story continues below advertisement

“To carry out this conduct, Sean Combs led and participated in a racketeering conspiracy that used the business empire he controlled to carry out criminal activity, including sex trafficking, forced labour, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and the obstruction of justice,” Williams said in remarks that echoed the three-count indictment.

The indictment alleges that, unbeknownst to his victims, Combs would sometimes keep videos he filmed of the women engaging in sex acts. Combs used the recordings “as collateral to ensure the continued obedience and silence of the victims,” the indictment said.

As the threat of criminal charges loomed, Combs and his associates also pressured witnesses and victims to stay silent by attempting to bribe them and providing them with a false narrative of events, according to the indictment.

Prosecutors also said that Combs’ employees and associates were witness to the violence and depraved acts, but often worked with the rap star to help cover up his crimes, including preventing victims from leaving, or tracking down those that attempted to flee.

    Story continues below advertisement

They also allege that Combs’ employees helped their boss pull off the “freak offs” by booking hotel rooms, arranging travel and stocking the rooms with lubricants, linens and lighting, IV fluids and illicit drugs. Prosecutors said employees would clean the rooms when the sex acts, which could last days, were finished.

Christian Combs, son of Sean Combs, arrives at U.S. District Court on September 17, 2024 in New York City. Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs was arrested in Manhattan on September 16 in a sex trafficking probe following a federal indictment.

    John Lamparski/Getty Images

In one such 2012 incident, held inside a Manhattan hotel, Combs had to pay more than “$46,000 to cover damages to a penthouse room following a freak off,” the prosecution said.

Combs’ lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, addressed the indictment and arrest of his client earlier Tuesday, telling reporters that Combs would not plead guilty and insisted upon his innocence.

“Obviously, he’s going to fight this with all of his energy and all of his might and the full confidence of his lawyers,” said Agnifilo. “And I expect a long battle with a good result for Mr. Combs.”

    Story continues below advertisement

Over the past year, Combs has been sued by multiple people who say he subjected them to physical or sexual abuse.

New Linkin Park singer faces allegations of ties to Scientology, Danny Masterson – National | Globalnews.ca

Linkin Park announced that a new singer and drummer has joined the band as they prepares to release their first new album in over seven years since the death of frontman Chester Bennington.

Vocalist Emily Armstrong and drummer Colin Brittain performed on stage with returning bandmates Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Phoenix and Joe Hahn during a livestreamed concert on Thursday to showcase the new lineup. The band played hits from its discography and debuted their new single The Emptiness Machine, off forthcoming album From Zero.

A globe-hopping arena tour has been announced to support the album release, slated for Nov. 15. The band will perform six shows in Los Angeles, New York, Hamburg, London, Seoul, and Bogota, all before the album drops publicly.

Critics and fans alike were impressed by Armstrong’s vocal chops during Thursday’s show, praising her ability to “recall Bennington without attempting parody,” as AP music reporter Maria Sherman put it.

    Story continues below advertisement

Armstrong’s Instagram page has been flooded with comments from enthused Linkin Park fans, welcoming her to the band. The former Dead Sara lead singer will be a co-vocalist for Linkin Park alongside Shinoda.

But for some fans, the excitement quickly soured after allegations resurfaced that Armstrong supported That 70’s Show actor and convicted rapist Danny Masterson during his trial.

The allegations stem from fellow musician, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, who claims that Armstrong intimidated Masterson’s victims during a preliminary hearing. Masterson is a high-profile member of the Church of Scientology and Bixler-Zavala claims Armstrong is also a prominent Scientologist.

“Do your fans know about your friend Danny Masterson? Your rapist friend,” wrote Bixler-Zavala last year in a comment on Dead Sara’s Instagram page.

“Remember how your fellow scientologist goon squad surrounded one of the Jane Doe’s when she was trying to leave the elevators? The court sherriffs had to escort her away from your awful cult.”

Bixler-Zavala shared a screenshot of this comment on his Instagram story after it was announced that Armstrong was joining Linkin Park, Rolling Stone reports, though the story has since been deleted.

Bixler-Zavala is a former member of the Church of Scientology and a Getty Images photo is circulating showing him and Armstrong together at a Scientology event in 2013.

There do not appear to be photos of Armstrong at Masterson’s trials, but journalist Tony Ortega reported in 2020 that Armstrong showed up to an arraignment with Masterson as part of a large entourage of “longtime friends.”

Bixler-Zavala’s wife, Chrissie Carnell-Bixler, is also a former Scientologist and she was one of the women that accused Masterson of sexual assault. Masterson was convicted of raping two Jane Doe’s, women whose names were not made public, though he was never convicted on charges tied to Carnell-Bixler’s allegations, the Rolling Stone reports.

Leah Remini and Angelo Pagán announce divorce after 21 years of marriage – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

After 21 years of marriage, Leah Remini and Angelo Pagán are doing what’s best for them — filing for divorce.

The former couple posted a joint statement to social media on Thursday. Though Remini, 54, and Pagán, 56, have been together for nearly three decades, the decision to end their relationship came “after a lot of thought and care,” they said.

“As hard as divorce is, we are approaching this with a positive outlook because we know it’s what’s best for us,” the pair wrote. “We are proud of how we have worked through this together.”

The lengthy statement acknowledged that both Remini and Pagán are “sad” about the end of their marriage but will “continue to move forward into our new normal—together still in many ways, and apart in some new ones.”

Remini and Pagán, who share a 20-year-old daughter, said they will continue to spend holidays together, watch their favourite TV shows together and will still gather as a family.

    Story continues below advertisement

“To put it simply, we both changed, as people do, and we got used to playing roles that didn’t fit us anymore,” the soon-to-be ex-spouses wrote. “Our bond is still strong—it’s just evolved into something different.”

Remini and Pagán celebrated their marriage and called it a “huge success.”

They said they decided to issue the candid statement about their divorce because they’ve shared much of their relationship publicly in various TV specials, including Leah Remini: It’s All Relative, which ran for two seasons on TLC.

“We would love for everyone to have more access to different kinds of relationship stories and not feel so isolated in navigating the changes that millions of couples make every year,” Remini and Pagán continued. “We hope our journey can inspire others to see that relationships—whether they change or end—aren’t failures.”

    Story continues below advertisement

The ex-couple said they would continue to share “snippets” of their lives as they navigate the divorce and new paths forward.

Remini, who is best known for her longstanding role on King of Queens, shares daughter Sofia Bella with Pagán. He also has three other children from a previous relationship.

The pair met in 1996, then tied the knot in a Las Vegas ceremony in 2003.

When Remini left the Church of Scientology in 2013, after 30 years in the faith, Pagán also defected.

In the years since, Remini has been a vocal critic of Scientology, and has accused the religious organization and its founder David Miscavige of serious abuses of power.

Remini is currently in a legal battle with the church over allegations that religious leaders have for years retaliated against her with a campaign of “continued, aggressive harassment” and “mob-style operations and attacks.” The Church of Scientology has denied all allegations and maintains Remini is “spreading falsehoods and hate speech.”

In 2016, she released the documentary series Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, which she produced and co-created. The series won three Emmy Awards.

‘What Not to Wear’ reboot (sorta): Stacy London, Clinton Kelly to reunite – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

The reality TV favourite What Not to Wear is back with a new and modern spin: Wear Whatever the F You Want.

Former co-hosts Stacy London and Clinton Kelly are reuniting to give their expert fashion advice to those in need, but this time, the duo will let their onscreen clients take charge in deciding their personal style.

In Wear Whatever the F You Want, the newly announced eight-part series produced by Amazon Prime Video, London and Kelly will help style-challenged people fine-tune how they dress while maintaining the quirks of their already established looks.

“The world has changed a lot since the run of ‘What Not to Wear,’ and, thankfully, so have we,” London and Kelly said in a press release. “These days, we have zero interest in telling people what to do, based on society’s norms— because there are no more norms!”

    Story continues below advertisement

Like the original, Wear Whatever the F You Want is a makeover show that encourages participants to dress more stylishly, while offering audiences at home fun tips and tricks for their own wardrobes. The only difference: the new iteration supposedly won’t tear down the episode’s client before offering help.

“Style is still an important form of communication, and we’re excited to show new clients how to align their personal messaging with their life goals,” London and Kelly, both 55, promised. “It’s time to celebrate individual style, not prescribe it.”

A description of the show says London and Kelly “will empower each client to live out their fashion fantasy and find their style truth in the journey of a lifetime.”

The immensely popular What Not to Wear aired on TLC starting in 2003, and lasted for 10 seasons before ending in 2013.

After the series concluded, London and Kelly feuded publicly throughout the years.

The hosting duo quashed their arguing in 2023. At the time, they told the Today show they’d both grown tired of seeing discourse online about their strained relationship and decided to talk it out.

“After seeing the same clickbait story over and over and over on Instagram about how much we hated each other, I was like, ‘I can’t take this anymore.’ Because we don’t really hate each other,” Kelly said. “We love each other, as a matter of fact.”

Kelly told the outlet he and London have always had “very strong feelings toward each other.” In a collection of essays from 2017, Kelly wrote he either “adored” or “despised” London throughout their working relationship.

The pair had “an emotional conversation” during the COVID-19 pandemic and put their feud behind them, Kelly said.

“One thing I’ll say about forgiveness is if you don’t let go of it, the famous line is, it’s like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die,” London said. “So do not hold onto grudges. Don’t do it. Find a way through.”

London and Kelly are both listed as executive producers for Wear Whatever the F You Want. As of this writing, there is no premiere date and Canadian programming information is not yet available.

Ronda Rousey apologizes for sharing Sandy Hook conspiracy video – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Eleven years after she shared a video that touted conspiracy theories about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, former UFC champion Ronda Rousey has issued an apology.

In a lengthy statement shared to X early Friday morning, Rousey said she’s regretted the post “every day of my life.”

In January 2013, about a month after a gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and killed 20 children and six staffers, Rousey shared a YouTube video to X (then Twitter) that cast doubt on the shooting. Rousey posted a link to the video and wrote, “Extremely interesting, and must-watch.”

“I didn’t even believe it, but was so horrified at the truth that I was grasping for an alternative fiction to cling to instead,” Rousey said in her apology. “I quickly realized my mistake and took it down, but the damage was done.”

    Story continues below advertisement

The 37-year-old pro wrestler said she’s drafted the apology several times over the last decade, but has never had the courage to speak out until now. One such attempt to apologize was in her recent memoir, Our Fight, but Rousey said her publisher “begged” to remove it, “saying it would overshadow everything else and do more harm than good.”

Rousey’s hesitancy to apologize was also in part due to fear that calling attention to the video would increase the reach of the conspiracy theories, and would “selfishly, inform even more people I was ignorant, self absorbed and tone deaf enough to share one in the first place.”

“But honestly, I deserve to be hated, labeled, detested, resented and worse for it,” Rousey wrote. “I deserve to lose out on every opportunity, I should have been canceled, I would have deserved it. I still do.”

    Story continues below advertisement

In bolded text, Rousey continued: “I apologize that this came 11 years too late, but to those affected by the Sandy Hook massacre, from the bottom of my heart and depth of my soul I am so so sorry for the hurt I caused. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain you’ve endured and words cannot describe how thoroughly remorseful and ashamed I am of myself for contributing it.”

Rousey then addressed others who may believe conspiracy theories, or as she said, people who have “fallen down the black hole of bulls—.”

“It doesn’t make you edgy, or an independent thinker, you’re not doing your due diligence entertaining every possibility by digesting these conspiracies,” Rousey wrote. “They will only make you feel powerless, afraid, miserable and isolated. You’re doing nothing but hurting others and yourself.”

She concluded, “Regardless of how many bridges you’ve burned over it, stop digging yourself a deeper hole, don’t get wrapped up in the sunk cost fallacy, no matter how long you’ve gone down the wrong road, you should still turn back.”

In the days after she shared the YouTube conspiracy video in 2013, Rousey did issue a brief apology.

“I never meant to insult or hurt anyone, sorry if anyone was offended,” the wrestler wrote on social media. “It was not my intention in the least.”

    Story continues below advertisement

She did not make mention of the post again after that.

Rousey’s most recent apology was met with general positivity online, with many commenting the statement was “better late than never.”

“Never been a Ronda fan, but I can respect this. If you cannot hold yourself accountable, how can anybody expect to grow,” one user wrote on X.

“This is so clearly heartfelt that it’s hard to imagine anyone questioning it,” another commented. “People make mistakes. You clearly did. You realized yours quickly and not because of backlash.”

Other social media users speculated Rousey’s apology was triggered by a recent AMA, or “Ask Me Anything” session, on Reddit that saw the athlete inundated with questions about her initial posting of the video.

    Story continues below advertisement

The Dec. 14, 2012, Sandy Hook school shooting is the second-deadliest school shooting to ever occur in the U.S., behind the 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech.

Unfounded conspiracy theories about the Sandy Hook massacre have circulated since it happened, often championed by controversial public figures like Infowars host Alex Jones.

Jones, who for years told his audience the shooting was a hoax, was sued by the family members of Sandy Hook victims and ordered to pay US$1.5 billion in 2022 for his false claims. The trial saw harrowing testimony from family members, who said they still dealt with intense harassment from conspiracy theorists.

A federal judge ordered the liquidation of Jones’ personal assets in June, but dismissed his company’s separate bankruptcy case.

Jones has since acknowledged that the Sandy Hook shooting did happen. Despite that, he’s continually said Democrats and the “deep state” are conspiring to shut down his companies and eliminate his right to free speech.

Chick-fil-A plans to launch streaming service with original shows, reports say – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Fast food giant Chick-fil-A has ruffled feathers over new reports claiming the company is working to expand its chicken sandwich and waffle fry empire into the entertainment space.

Chick-fil-A is apparently moving quickly to create its very own streaming platform with a slate of original and licensed content, Variety and Deadline reported Wednesday.

The service won’t just be chick flicks, either. The company has reportedly been in talks with various Hollywood production companies to create “family-friendly, mostly unscripted original shows.”

Variety reported Chick-fil-A has already secured a game show from Glassman Media (creators of The Wall) and a 10-episode series by the talent company Sugar23, whose CEO Michael Sugar produced the movie Spotlight and the show 13 Reasons Why.

Reports of the Chick-fil-A streaming platform came as an unexpected bombshell to many skeptics on social media.

    Story continues below advertisement

“I like some of the Chick-Fil-A sandwiches, wtf do they know about streaming,” one doubter posted on X.

    Story continues below advertisement

Some joked the Chick-fil-A streaming platform would not function on Sundays, since the restaurant has historically closed on the day because the company’s Christian founder observes the Sabbath, which maintains Sunday is for rest and worship.

    Story continues below advertisement

Many other critics pointed to Chick-fil-A’s past donations to anti-LGBTQ2 organizations and speculated whether or not the brand’s streaming platform would also be centred around Christianity. (Chick-fil-A in 2019 said it would cease donations to the Salvation Army and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, both of which have condemned homosexuality.)

    Story continues below advertisement

The entertainment space — particularly streaming — is incredibly competitive, but Chick-fil-A isn’t the only familiar food brand to venture into content creation as a means of advertising and revenue.

Companies including Starbucks and Coca-Cola have already made the leap. In June, the coffee giant announced its Starbucks Studio project to create content, while Coca-Cola has already released Christmas films for Amazon Prime Video, one of which stars Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer.

Beyond food, Lyft last year released a seven-episode YouTube trivia game show, entitled Lucky Lyfthosted by Bob the Drag Queen.

Even Chick-fil-A has already dipped its toes (or rather, wings) into content creation. The company has released animated short films on its social media accounts, with the most recent uploaded only a month ago. The short, titled Rocky Road, sees three animated cows infiltrate a truck shipment of rocky road ice cream.

    Story continues below advertisement

Chick-fil-A is one of the biggest fast-food chains in the U.S., and last year earned over US$21 billion (C$28.55 billion).

The company is in the midst of a larger rollout to Canada, where only a few locations exist in major cities across the country. In February, Chick-fil-A said it has plans to open 20 restaurants in Alberta alone by 2030.

Danielle Fishel of ‘Boy Meets World’ reveals breast cancer diagnosis – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Danielle Fishel, who shot to fame in the ’90s for her role in coming-of-age sitcom Boy Meets World, has revealed she has breast cancer and is urging everyone to book regular cancer screenings.

Fishel, 43, shared the diagnosis on the Pod Meets World podcast, hosted alongside her former co-stars Rider Strong and Will Friedle. Fishel played Topanga Lawerence on the long-running ABC show.

“I would like to share something with our listeners,” Fishel said at the start of Monday’s podcast. “I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a form of breast cancer.”

“It is very, very, very early. It’s technically stage zero,” Fishel said, adding that her specific diagnosis was “high grade DCIS with micro invasion.”

DCIS is sometimes called “pre-cancer” or “stage zero” breast cancer because the cancer cells are only found in the milk ducts of the breast and haven’t spread into the surrounding breast tissue or beyond, according to the University Health Network in Toronto.

    Story continues below advertisement

Milk ducts do cover a large area of the breast, however, so DCIS treatment sometimes involves treating the entire breast.

“I’m going to be fine, I’m having surgery to remove it,” Fishel reassured listeners, adding that she will also undergo “follow-up treatment.”

Surgery is the main treatment for DCIS. Many people also undergo radiation therapy after surgery to lower the risk that the cancer will return, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.

‘Pod Meets World’ hosts Will Friedle, Danielle Fishel, and Rider Strong attend the 2023 iHeartRadio Music Festival at T-Mobile Arena on September 22, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Boy Meets World star revealed that the “only reason” doctors were able to catch her diagnosis so early is because “the day I got my text message that my yearly mammogram had come up, I made the appointment.”

There were many reasons to delay the appointment, Fishel noted, including work and family commitments, but she recognized the importance of regular screenings and acted quickly.

    Story continues below advertisement

“I want to share this because I hope it will encourage anyone to get in there” and do a cancer screening, Fishel said.

There are still a lot of “big decisions ahead,” but one important choice that’s already behind Fishel is her decision to speak publicly about her diagnosis.

“For some reason I had always thought [if I were diagnosed with cancer] I would suffer in silence,” she said. “I would tell only my small group and then I would just suck it up. And then when I’m on the other side of it then I would tell people.”

But after sharing her diagnosis with close friends and family, she realized that “the more people I talked to, the more people had their own experiences, either themselves being diagnosed with cancer or a family member.”

There is so much more to learn by sharing one’s experiences, she found, especially at the “very beginning of a story or in the very messy middle of a story.”

Fishel has “high grade” DCIS, which means that there is a higher chance her cancer will become invasive, and spread into other areas of the breast. A cancer’s “grade” describes how the cancer cells look and how quickly they grow compared to normal cells, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.

    Story continues below advertisement

Fishel doctor’s also noticed a “micro invasion” of cancer cells, which means that her cancer has spread no more than one millimetre into adjacent tissue.

DCIS is considered the most common form of non-invasive breast cancer. If cancer cells do spread to other parts of the breast, a patient may be diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma — the most common form of invasive breast cancer.

While it’s certainly a positive that Fishel’s cancer was detected early, an early diagnosis doesn’t necessarily mean better health outcomes for patients. Nearly 30 per cent of women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer will develop metastatic breast cancer, in which the cancer spreads beyond the breast to other parts of the body.

According to the Government of Canada, one in eight women are expected to develop breast cancer at some point in their lifetime.

At least 1 arrest made in connection with Matthew Perry’s death: reports – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

At least one arrest has been made in connection with the accidental overdose death of beloved actor Matthew Perry, police sources have confirmed to multiple news outlets.

Citing law enforcement sources, NBC News reports that one person has been arrested. ABC News, also citing police sources, claims that multiple arrests happened in an early morning operation Thursday.

The charges are expected to be announced at a news briefing later on Thursday.

Perry died from the acute effects of the anesthetic ketamine last October at the age of 54. He was found drowned in the heated end of a pool at his Southern California home on Oct. 28, 2023.

In May, Los Angeles police said they were working with federal authorities to figure out the source of the ketamine, an anesthetic with psychedelic properties, Perry had consumed.

    Story continues below advertisement

His death was deemed an accident with no foul play suspected.

People close to Perry told investigators that he was undergoing ketamine infusion therapy, an experimental treatment used to treat depression and anxiety. But the medical examiner said the levels of ketamine in Perry’s body were in the range used for general anesthesia during surgery, and that his last treatment one and a half weeks earlier wouldn’t explain those levels. The drug is typically metabolized in a matter of hours.

The report said coronary artery disease and buprenorphine, which is used to treat opioid use disorder, also contributed.

The actor had taken drugs in the past but had been “reportedly clean for 19 months,” according to the report.

Perry had played pickleball earlier in the day, the report said, and his assistant, who lives with him, found him face down in the pool after returning from errands.

    Story continues below advertisement

The assistant told investigators Perry had not been sick, had not made any health complaints, and had not shown evidence of recent alcohol or drug use.

Ketamine, a decades-old drug commonly used in surgery, has seen wider use in recent years, used as a treatment for anxiety, depression and pain.

Perry’s 10 seasons on Friends made him one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actors, starring opposite Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow and David Schwimmer as a friend group in New York.

As Chandler, he played a sarcastic yet insecure and neurotic roommate of Joey and Ross, played by LeBlanc and Schwimmer, respectively. By the series’ end, Chandler is married to Cox’s Monica and they have a family, reflecting the journey of the core cast from single New Yorkers to those who are married and starting families.

The series was one of television’s biggest hits and has taken on a new life — and found surprising popularity with younger fans — in recent years on streaming services.

Rachael Lillis, ‘Pokémon’ star who voiced Misty and Jessie, dies at 46 – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Rachael Lillis, a voice actor who brought to life many of Pokémon‘s most beloved characters, has died at the age of 46.

Lillis was diagnosed with breast cancer in May. Her sister announced her death in an update to a GoFundMe page supporting Lillis’s medical treatment.

“With a heavy heart, I regret to say that Rachael has passed away. She passed peacefully Saturday night, without pain, and for that we are grateful,” Laurie Orr wrote.

Lillis is best known for voicing the character of Misty in the English version of the Pokémon anime series. Misty was the main female protagonist of the series’ first five seasons, travelling alongside Ash Ketchum and Brock on a series of adventures before returning to her original job as leader of the Cerulean Gym. Her spot in the main trio was taken over by characters May and later Dawn.

    Story continues below advertisement

Lillis also brought to life one of the show’s main antagonists, Jessie, a member of Team Rocket along with James and a talking Pokémon, Meowth. Team Rocket would devise hare-brained schemes to steal Pokémon, often involving over-the-top mechanical robots, only to be thwarted by the trio of heroes.

Beyond Misty and Jessie, Lillis also voiced Jigglypuff, a pink singing Pokémon.

The voice actor of Ash Ketchum paid tribute to Lillis on X, formerly Twitter, calling her an “extraordinary talent” and a “truly special” friend.

“We all know Rachael Lillis from the many wonderful roles she played. She filled our Saturday mornings and before/after school hours with her beautiful voice, her terrific comic timing, and her remarkable acting skills,” Veronica Taylor wrote.

Taylor lamented how Lillis “burned bright and vanished too soon.”

“I was lucky enough to know Rachael as a friend. She had unlimited kindness and compassion, even until the very end. She had a great sense of humor, was wonderful to be with, incredibly intelligent, and had such a memory. She worked hard and cared deeply,” Taylor wrote.

“I am not sure how this very dark void will be filled now that her light no longer shines in it,” Taylor added. “She will live on in our memories for eternity.”

Lillis began voice acting in the 1990s and appeared in hundreds of TV shows, movies and video games throughout her decades-long career.

    Story continues below advertisement

Apart from Pokémon, she starred in the beloved Italian American cartoon Winx Club and the critically acclaimed animes Your Lie in April and Hunter x Hunter. Lillis often appeared at anime conventions where she met fans from around the world.

Despite her death, donations to Lillis’s GoFundMe are still flowing in. Her sister says the remaining donations will go towards ongoing medical bills and a memorial service for her. The leftover money will be donated to cancer causes.

One fan, Angela Tan, donated money after Lillis’s death and wrote that the actor “made my Saturday mornings so much more exciting growing up.”

“(T)hank you for being a huge part of my childhood and shaping who I am today! I will continue to rewatch Pokemon in your memory.”

Another fan, Robel Loul, wrote that they “wouldn’t be who I am today without amazing voice actors such as Rachael bringing life to the characters who gave me motivation, strength, taught me never to give up and just overall blessed me with an amazing childhood.”

“She’ll outlive us all with the amazing characters she brought to life. A form of eternal life if you will. And that makes me truly happy,” Loul wrote.

Defiant Swifties sing their hearts out in Vienna after foiled terror plot – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Taylor Swift fans took to the streets of Austria’s capital to sing, hug and cry their hearts out after three of Swift’s concerts were cancelled following a foiled terrorist plot.

The defiant Swifties gathered in central Vienna on Corneliusgasse, a street name that echoes Cornelia Street, the title of one of Swift’s tracks on the 2019 album Lover. The song refers to a street in New York City’s Greenwich Village, where Swift rented a luxury apartment in 2016 and fans now visit to take selfies.

The small thoroughfare played host to hundreds of fans who gathered together to commiserate about the Eras Tour cancellations, trade friendship bracelets and sing their favourite Swift tunes. Video of the impromptu gathering was posted to social media, showing throngs of fans standing together, raising their voices in harmony.

    Story continues below advertisement

Photos taken of the gathering showed dozens of homemade friendship bracelets, bearing lyrics and titles of Swift songs, hanging from trees. One police officer had his uniform decorated with bracelets.

Up to 65,000 fans were expected to attend Swift’s sold-out concerts at Ernst Happel Stadium each night, with as many as 30,000 non-ticket-holders expected to congregate outside the venue. The shows were supposed to take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

    Story continues below advertisement

Concert organizers abruptly cancelled all three shows on Wednesday after Austrian authorities foiled a planned terrorist attack believed to be inspired by the Islamic State and al-Qaeda. A 19-year-old and a 17-year-old were arrested Wednesday in connection with the attack. An 18-year-old was arrested Thursday after allegedly being in contact with one of the suspects.

One of the suspects confessed to planning to “kill as many people as possible outside the concert venue.” Chemicals and bomb-making materials were found at one of the suspects’ homes, authorities said.

As it started to rain on Thursday, some of the fans who gathered on Corneliusgasse dispersed. Swifties took to the streets again on Friday.

One fan who flew to Vienna from the U.K. told the BBC that the atmosphere of Thursday’s gathering was “sombre but also excited.”

“It’s a really strange situation and I think the ultimate thing we feel is just grateful that we’re safe and that everyone else is safe,” she said. “A bit of a mixed bag of emotions.”

But it wasn’t just Corneliusgasse that played host to the resilient Swifties; numerous establishments across Vienna opened their doors to despondent fans, including local museums that offered free admission and restaurants and coffee shops offering free food and drinks.

Kristi Hovington, an educator and school librarian from Barcelona, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that a local church played Swift songs throughout the day to give Swifties a place to gather.

    Story continues below advertisement

Hovington told Variety that her daughter “heard a Taylor Swift song playing in the street, and she just stopped.”

“There was this sign outside of this building. We didn’t realize it was a church, but there was a sign that said, ‘Dear Swifties, we sympathize with you. You’re welcome to come and sing your sadness away.’”

When they walked in, Hovington saw the church pews “were filled with people crying and singing,” while the Eras Tour setlist blasted from the church speakers.

“Everybody had their arms around each other,” she continued. “It was just this really beautiful communal moment, just recognizing that we were all obviously sad that we can’t see Taylor and so sad that this horrific thing happened, targeting mostly women and girls at a concert. But the Swifties are very resilient, and people just got on about their day and were kind and swapping friendship bracelets and singing songs anyway.”

Swift has yet to comment on the foiled plot targeting her Eras Tour, but she said in a 2019 interview with Elle magazine that an attack at one of her concerts was “her biggest fear.”

    Story continues below advertisement

“After the Manchester Arena bombing and the Vegas concert shooting, I was completely terrified to go on tour this time because I didn’t know how we were going to keep three million fans safe over seven months,” she said at the time.

“There was a tremendous amount of planning, expense, and effort put into keeping my fans safe.”

BTS member Suga fined, ‘deeply sorry’ for driving scooter while drunk – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Suga, of world-famous K-pop group BTS, had his South Korean driver’s licence revoked after he was caught riding an electric scooter while intoxicated. The singer (real name Min Yoon-gi) issued a public apology on Wednesday and said he was “deeply sorry” to bring the “disappointing news” to his fanbase.

Suga, 31, said he was riding his electric scooter home from a dinner where he’d been drinking alcohol.

“I thought it was a short distance and didn’t realize that you can’t ride an electric scooter while intoxicated, so I violated the road traffic laws,” he wrote in Korean.

He said he “fell over” while parking the scooter in front of his home, located in Seoul. A nearby police officer witnessed the star’s tumble from his e-scooter and had Suga complete a breathalyzer test.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said police revealed Suga’s blood alcohol concentration was at least 0.08 per cent, the legal benchmark for revoking a person’s licence.

Suga admitted to the licensure cancellation and said he also received a fine.

Suga was brought to the Yongsan Police Station for questioning. He was charged with violating the South Korean Road Traffic Act.

The singer was released after police questioning.

“No one was harmed or any facilities were damaged in the process, but this is my responsibility and I have no excuses, so I bow my head and apologize to everyone,” Suga wrote in his statement.

“I apologize to everyone who was hurt by my careless and wrong actions, and I will be more careful in my actions to avoid this from happening again.”

Suga is not an active member of BTS, which announced a hiatus in 2022. The break has allowed for the BTS members to pursue solo projects and to perform their mandatory military service, which Suga is currently completing.

The superstar is employed as a social service agent, an alternative form of military service that does not require someone to perform duties as a traditional soldier. Suga was assigned work as a social service agent after he was ruled unfit for regular combat duty, with local media speculating it’s because of a past shoulder injury.

Bighit, the record label that represents BTS, also issued a “sincere apology” for Suga’s behaviour. The label said Suga was wearing a helmet and travelled about 500 metres on his electric scooter.

“As a social service agent during his military service, he is prepared to accept any disciplinary actions from his place of work for causing a social disturbance,” the company wrote. “We will take greater care to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future.”

Suga’s military conscription is expected to end next June.

BTS is expected to reunite in 2025.

In Canada, it is also against the law to operate an electric scooter while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Driving any kind of motorized vehicle — including e-bikes and e-scooters — while intoxicated is considered illegal and could potentially lead to charges.

Justin Timberlake’s licence suspended as he pleads not guilty to DWI – National | Globalnews.ca

Justin Timberlake’s driving privileges were taken away in court Friday as he pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence.

The singer, 43, appeared in Long Island court virtually from Belgium, where he is currently on tour. The court appearance stems from his June 18 arrest when police said he ran a stop sign and veered out of his lane in the posh beach town of Sag Harbor, N.Y.

Court documents say the pop star was driving a BMW around 12:30 a.m. when an officer stopped him and determined he was intoxicated.

“His eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests,” the court papers said.

In documents released by police the day after his arrest, it’s written that Timberlake apparently refused the breath test once they arrived at the station.

Dressed in a black collared shirt, the former NSYNC singer said little during the remote arraignment as Sag Harbor Village Justice Carl Irace suspended his licence.

His attorney, Edward Burke Jr., has maintained that Timberlake was not drunk and that the case should be dropped.

“The facts remain he was not intoxicated,” Burke said Friday, according to Newsday. “I’ll say it again: Justin Timberlake was not intoxicated and we’re very confident that charge, that criminal charge, will be dismissed.”

At the time of his arrest, the SexyBack singer told authorities he drank only one martini and that he’d been following some friends home in his car.

Irace set a next court date for Aug. 9.

The case was delayed after Burke said the original charging document lacked a sergeant’s signature and should be thrown out.

Assistant District Attorney Ashley Cangro said new documents were filed July 2 that should address that flaw.

  • Improving The Relationship Between Schools And Communities

Improving The Relationship Between Schools And Communities

    [ad_1]

    by Terry Heick

Education is a series of learning experiences informed by policy, and actuated by teachers.

Policy, by its very nature, is sweeping and ambitious. It is designed to work on various scales, is well-intentioned, and often difficult to fault on paper. The teachers aren’t really much different. They are ambitious, designed to work on various scales, and are commissioned (quite literally) to enact the policies that govern the institutions (schools) they work in.

The wrinkles arise however as teachers strive to realize a vision for education that is, as things are, entirely impossible: For every student to master every academic standard.

No matter the starting literacy level, emotional intelligence, goals in life, family history, socioeconomic background, learning and thinking habits, or academic ambition, the same result is expected of all students–and increasingly troublesome word stuffed full of connotation and implication.

    Proficiency.

And perhaps worst of all, this inclusive scale of proficiency is regarded not as a necessary evil, but the noblest of goals–equality manifest as democracy itself.

    Equality In Learning

Equality in learning can mean anything. Same spending. Same resources–or rather, same fulfillment of relative needs. Same expectations.

Fair doesn’t always mean equal, as many will correctly reason, but as we seek to democratize the learning process, we end up with scripted responses to unscripted circumstances, and as a result the homogenization of something that has no business being homogenized.

    Learning
But equality in learning is a dangerous chase to give, full of dead-ends, rhetoric, and, at times, waste.

Learning is messy and personal–messy because it’s personal, in fact. And it’s wasteful for many of the same reasons. Not because people learn differently, but because education often tries to impose ‘sameness’ on it all. And when that approach doesn’t work, gobs (and gobs) of resources are spent troubleshooting, ‘remediating,’ and erstwhile tail-chasing.

Learning can be frustrating for the same reasons it’s compelling–because it’s instinctive and primal. It starts out as play, and then quickly turns more formal as self-directed experimentation turns into sterile academia. Schools–well-intentioned–care so much for the learning that they pull out every stop: sirens, meters, and relief valves to let us know what’s going on at all times.

This, however, is a (small) part of the problem, like checking a rubric and data during your first date to see how things are going. That doesn’t mean there is no place for data and rubrics, but it just might be that, in pursuit of proficiency we’ve found dull edges.

And in pursuit of excellence we’ve found mediocrity.

Not An Argument For Learning Models

At this point, this is usually where the conversation turns to learning models–entrepreneurial learning, self-directed learning, mobile learning, play-based learning, project-based learning, inquiry-based learning, blended learning.

    And so on.

And this is all pertinent and felicitous–all screaming for thinking, integration, and revision. But instead, a more immediate focus of our scope might be the way teachers and teacher systems push back on one another in the vast majority of public schools today.

    The Systems

    So what are these ‘systems’?

    District walkthroughs and their ‘non-negotiables.’

    Professional growth plans.

    Professional learning communities.

    Data teams.

    District and school-sponsored professional development.

News media publishing of test scores.

Actually, let’s stop and look at that one for a moment.

    Public Reporting Of Test Scores

The publishing of test scores isn’t the problem–it’s the void of context most people have for internalizing those data. The public sees in more binary terms–failing school and performing school. Maybe improving school. That’s it.

Never failing test, performing attention to literacy, or on the rise community support. Schools are not seen as completely interdependent with society, but rather widget factories, and are thus judged by their widgets. And perhaps worst of all, these widgets are children.

Why this is a problem has to do with connotation and loaded language–old-guard advertising tricks to get people to care. A widget is cold, but a child is a living, breathing, blinking thing that deserves the best possible future–and the best from us today to help make that happen.

    And of course that’s true.

    Vague & Emotionally Loaded Language

So when we talk, our language can be empty and generalized. We talk about the future, the learning, of our collective and unyielding intent to ‘do right by these kids.’ We make decisions that ‘are best for the kids,’ rather than the adults, because what adult would propose the opposite?

But it’s exactly through this selfless ambition and pathos-based grandstanding that we get ourselves in trouble. We simply cannot consistently fulfill what we promise, and, puzzled, turn to professional development to solve our woes.

If school is an analogue of post-modern industrialism–and it shouldn’t be but it currently operates as exactly that–then teachers and administrators are the ones that operate the levers and the presses. We create the molds, fill the conveyors with widgets, fill the pallets, operate the forklifts, and take very serious notes on our clipboards as we watch with equally serious eyes.

But it’s the teachers and administrators, tirelessly planning and revising while the entire operation teeters, that are wheezing and chuffing. We promise and swear in both creed and policy to help every single child meet their potential as human beings. The pressure–and hubris–of that promise!

We add empowering signatures on our email, ‘Failure is not an option,’ or ‘Preparing children for the future,’ and then ‘recharge our batteries’ during weekends and holidays so that on Monday afternoons we can sit erect in two hour staff meetings that rob us of any bit of innovative spirit we had managed to restore.

We invite the parents into school every quarter with the promise of bake sales or a school play and other extracurricular events, pretending not to notice how awkward it all is—how we both are raising different parts of their children but barely know one another.

How we stubbornly continue to teach children as an industry produces goods.

How we fail to connect organizations with families and schools and universities and cultural programs and community centers in any compelling way because, as schools, we insist on going alone, only opening the doors on our schedule and our terms to help us do what we want to do because we wrote the book on what needs to be done.

We use language and processes of education that are completely alien to most families. And in the process, we create a completely unsustainable–and morbidly private–system of learning that reduces the capacity of families and communities while we toil away in proud martyrdom, never realizing that our ambition is costing us everything.

If schools serve students, and students are deeply embedded in the fabric of communities, how can we serve those students without knowing those communities? And without those communities knowing us?

Maybe we open our school and classroom doors for meaningful interaction with families and communities on equal terms not at an extracurricular level, but a curricular level.

That’s much easier said than done, but conversations about school improvement could do worse than start there.

Space Journey X alongside an extraterrestrial female deep space explorer whose ship he unintentionally destroyed, our human hero is launched throughout space. Our hero must make his wealth and set off on the arduous voyage home with the help of an overconfident drone and an enigmatic passenger, all the while navigating alien women, insane sex-bots, and adventures in his route.I usually avoid sandbox games since I would rather follow a continuous plot or tale. But for some unknown reason, I really adore this one. With everything going on, it maintains my interest and is really nicely balanced. It is extremely grindy, but just in the beginning when you have to accumulate money in order to advance in the game. After that, all it takes to stay afloat or in flight is sound management.

It’s a fantastic game, but there are a few things to consider. There is a ton of content in the shape of well-mixed tasks; the progression has been well considered. Once you master the basics, combat is rather easy, but it gives you a sense of accomplishment when you advance and take out the ships that were previously crushing you. I think there is room for improvement in the sexual side. starting with groping scenes, nudity, through services such as blowjobs, handjobs, to end in scenes of full vaginal and anal penetration, both with humans and monsters. The monster scenes are the ones that bring the most fetishes to the game, such as: tentacles, bestiality, slime, lactation, creampie, non-consensual sex, group sex among others.

    Features and System Requirements:

    • Explore a vast, procedurally generated universe with countless star systems, planets, and moons, each with unique environments, resources, and challenges.
    • Extensive spaceship customization options, allowing players to upgrade and modify their ships’ appearance, weapons, shields, engines, and more.

Taylor Swift ‘in shock’ after 3 kids die in stabbing at Swift-themed dance class – National | Globalnews.ca

A stabbing attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class in England has claimed the life of another child after a nine-year-old girl died from her injuries Tuesday, bringing the death toll up to three.

Eight other children and two adults are still in the hospital, with several of them in critical condition. The two other children who died were girls ages six and seven, Merseyside Police said.

Police are questioning a 17-year-old suspect who was arrested minutes after the Monday attack in Southport.

Taylor Swift wrote in an Instagram story Tuesday that she was “completely in shock” at the “horror of yesterday’s attack.”

“These were just little kids at a dance class. I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families,” she wrote.

Witnesses described scenes “from a horror movie” as bloodied children ran from the attack just before noon on Monday.

“They were in the road, running from the nursery,” said Bare Varathan, who owns a shop nearby. “They had been stabbed, here, here, here, everywhere,” he said, indicating the neck, back and chest.

Jonathan Hayes, a local businessman, was stabbed in the leg after he heard screams from his office and ran into the dance studio to protect the children, the Telegraph reports.

“Our office is in the same building as the dance studio. He heard screams and went outside, saw the attacker, saw that he had hurt a child and tried to take the knife off him and got stabbed in the leg,” Haye’s wife Helen told the paper.

“He’s very upset that he wasn’t able to be more help. Physically he will be OK, mentally I don’t know,” she added.

It is the latest shocking attack in a country where a recent rise in knife crime has stoked anxieties and led to calls for the government to do more to clamp down on bladed weapons, which are by far the most commonly used instruments in U.K. homicides.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack “horrendous and deeply shocking.”

    Story continues below advertisement

King Charles III sent his “condolences, prayers and deepest sympathies” to those affected by the “utterly horrific incident.”

Prince William and his wife Catherine said Monday that “as parents, we cannot begin to imagine what the families, friends and loved ones of those killed and injured in Southport today are going through.”

Colin Parry, who owns a nearby auto body shop, told The Guardian that the suspect arrived by taxi.

“He came down our driveway in a taxi and didn’t pay for the taxi, so I confronted him at that point,” Parry was quoted as saying. “He was quite aggressive, he said, ‘What are you gonna do about it?’”

Parry said most of the victims appeared to be young girls.

“The mothers are coming here now and screaming,” Parry said. “It is like a scene from a horror movie. … It’s like something from America, not like sunny Southport.”

Britain’s worst attack on children occurred in 1996, when 43-year-old Thomas Hamilton shot 16 kindergarteners and their teacher dead in a school gymnasium in Dunblane, Scotland. The U.K. subsequently banned the private ownership of almost all handguns.

    Story continues below advertisement

Mass shootings and killings with firearms are rare in Britain, where knives were used in about 40 per cent of homicides in the year to March 2023.

Although mass stabbings are also rare, several in recent years have generated fear and outrage and received a tremendous amount of attention.

In April, a man with a sword killed a 14-year-old boy walking to school in London and seriously injured four other people, including two police officers.

In Nottingham in central England in June 2022, a paranoid schizophrenic man fatally stabbed two college students walking home from celebrating the end of the school year and then killed a 65-year-old man, stole his van and used it to hit three pedestrians.

In Reading, west of London, in June 2020, a failed Libyan asylum seeker fatally stabbed three men and wounded three others.

Grimes’ mother says Elon Musk is ‘withholding’ their children from family – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

The mother of the musician Grimes has accused Elon Musk of “withholding” her three grandchildren and blocking them from visiting their dying great-grandmother in Canada.

Sandy Garossino on Saturday posted the plea to X, the social networking site owned by Musk, and claimed she has no other way to contact the billionaire.

Garossino, a columnist with the National Observer, said her 93-year-old mother is in an end-of-life palliative care facility and “yearns to see and hold Claire’s children one last time.”

Grimes (real name Claire Elise Boucher) shares three children with Musk, four-year-old X Æ A-Xii (known as X), two-year-old Exa Dark Sideræl and Techno (Tau) Mechanicus.

The couple, who dated on and off for many years, are currently battling for legal custody of their children, with Grimes telling the court last year that Musk would not give her access to one of their children.

    Story continues below advertisement

Garossino began her thread to Musk by saying it was “nice” to see him on Father’s Day in June.

“I hope you got the card that I helped X make. He was so proud of it,” she wrote.

Garossino said her ailing mother, who has not yet met the youngest of Grimes’ three children, was “thrilled for the kids’ planned visit to celebrate her birthday” on Saturday.

According to Garossino, the trip was cancelled and her mother’s hopes of seeing her great-grandchildren were “crushed.”

“I am alarmed to learn that the children cannot come as you are withholding them and their needed passport documents from Claire,” Garossino continued. “It was even more troubling to see you and X on television at the Olympics in Paris yesterday, after your DC trip earlier in the week.”

    Story continues below advertisement

Garossino questioned where the other two children were during the visit to Paris, and who was watching them.

“They are scheduled to be with their mother,” she wrote. “They were expected here in Canada.”

“I write with a grandmother’s plea, asking you to honour your agreement, return the children, and provide the documents they need to see their great grandmother before she passes,” she appealed. “Some moments in life last forever, and we get no second chances. Family is priceless.”

Garossino ended the thread by begging Musk to bring the children to Canada.

“This is so painful for my mother, and concerning for the kids. Time is of the essence now,” she concluded.

Musk did not reply to Garossino on X and has not commented publicly on the situation.

Grimes was born and raised in Vancouver and is best known for her experimental electropop music, including the popular songs Genesis and 4ÆM.

Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, has 12 known children. The birth of his 12th child, his third with Neuralink Corp. director Shivon Zilis, was revealed in June.

He has also had six children with Canadian author Justine Wilson, to whom he was married from 2000 to 2008. Musk’s first child, Nevada, died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in 2002 when he was only 10 weeks old.

Musk and Wilson have twins, named Griffin and Vivian, born in 2004. Two years later, the couple had triplets, Kai, Saxon and Damian.

News of tensions between Musk and Grimes’ family comes about a week after Musk’s daughter Vivian, who is transgender, said Musk is an absent father who harassed her for being queer and exhibiting feminine traits in childhood. Vivian spoke to the press after Musk said on social media Vivian is “not a girl” and was figuratively “dead” because she’s been “killed by the woke mind virus.”

On Thursday, Grimes expressed support for Vivian on X, writing, “I love and am forever endlessly proud of Vivian.”
