Ex-NFLer Rashad Jennings fumbles hard on easy ‘Wheel of Fortune’ puzzle – National | Globalnews.ca

File this under one of the biggest Wheel of Fortune fumbles you will ever see.

Former NFL running back Rashad Jennings dropped the ball so hard on episode of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune this week that he can’t help but laugh at himself.

Attempting to solve a puzzle in the “Rhyme Time” category, the 38-year-old was left with just one letter to guess — a letter “Q” to solve the puzzle, “Driving to Reno with Quentin Tarantino.”

Jennings, after posting a $600 spin, confidently announced his guess of the letter “P.”

    Story continues below advertisement

“No, I’m sorry, no,” longtime host Pat Sajak said with disappointment as the audience began to groan and laugh.

Jennings was playing for his organization The Rashad Jennings Foundation, which helps kids with health, leadership, mentorship and reading.

Clearly aware that his fumble is going to make him the target of teasing, Jennings poked a bit of fun at himself on Instagram.

“You will definitely get some laughs,” he wrote.

Although Sajak did not post about the blunder on social media, as he occasionally does, in the past he’s been quick to remind at-home viewers that “sometimes it’s a word that just doesn’t want to come into focus for you.”

Needless to say, we probably won’t be seeing any movies for Puentin Tarantino anytime soon.

  • Prosecutors seek to recharge Alec Baldwin in fatal ‘Rust’ shooting – National | Globalnews.ca

Prosecutors seek to recharge Alec Baldwin in fatal ‘Rust’ shooting – National | Globalnews.ca

Special prosecutors said Tuesday they are seeking to recharge actor Alec Baldwin in the 2021 fatal shooting on a Western movie set in New Mexico by presenting evidence to a grand jury.

New Mexico-based prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis said they’ll present evidence to grand jury within the next two months, noting that “additional facts” have come to light in the shooting on the set of the film Rust that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

In February, Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the 2021 incident. On-set armourer Hanna Gutierrez-Reed was also charged.

At the time, prosecutors wrote that the 30 Rock star was not present for mandatory firearms training before filming on Rust began.

    Story continues below advertisement

He was instead provided on-set guidance but prosecutors allege he was “distracted and talking on his cell phone to his family.” The training session was scheduled for an hour but was only 30 minutes long due to Baldwin’s “distraction” on the phone.

Baldwin, a co-producer of the film, was pointing a gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal on the film’s set on outside Santa Fe when the gun went off on Oct. 21, 2021, killing her and wounding director Joel Souza.

However, the charges were dropped in April, after “new facts were revealed that demand further investigation and forensic analysis,” the prosecutors wrote at the time.

They said they were informed the gun might have been modified before the shooting and malfunctioned. They later pivoted and began weighing whether to refile a charge against Baldwin after receiving a new analysis of the gun.

    Story continues below advertisement

The recent gun analysis from experts in ballistics and forensic testing based in Arizona and New Mexico relied on replacement parts to reassemble the gun fired by Baldwin — after parts of the pistol were broken during earlier testing by the FBI. The report examined the gun and markings it left on a spent cartridge to conclude that the trigger had to have been pulled or depressed.

Now, Morrissey and Lewis will look to recharge Baldwin.

“Additional facts have come to light that we believe show Mr. Baldwin has criminal culpability in the death of Halyna Hutchins and the shooting of Joel Souza,” Morrissey and Lewis said in an email obtained by The Associated Press.

“We believe the appropriate course of action is to permit a panel of New Mexico citizens to determine from here whether Mr. Baldwin should be held over for criminal trial.”

    Story continues below advertisement

Baldwin has said he was told the gun was “cold” — an industry term meaning it did not contain any ammunition with an explosive charge — and he never pulled the trigger. It has not been determined how live rounds made it onto the set.

Gutierrez-Reed, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering in the case. Her trial is scheduled to begin in February.

Gutierrez-Reed has blamed the shooting on other factors including possible sabotage, Baldwin’s lack of training, and a failure by Baldwin and assistant director and safety coordinator David Halls to ask her for extra checks.

Baldwin settled a lawsuit last October with the cinematographer’s husband, Matt Hutchins, in a deal that made Matt an executive producer on the movie.

In March, Halls pleaded no contest to a conviction for unsafe handling of a firearm and received a suspended sentence of six months of probation. He agreed to cooperate in the investigation of the shooting.

Robert Irwin shares emotional animal milestone tied to his late dad, Steve – National | Globalnews.ca

It’s a big week for Australia’s favourite wildlife family, The Irwins.

Robert Irwin, the 19-year-old son of late wildlife expert Steve Irwin, announced that a turtle had hatched at the Australia Zoo — and it carries a very special connection to his dad.

Robert choked up with emotion as he shared on an Instagram video that the zoo had welcome its very first Irwin’s turtle, the first time the rare freshwater species was bred in a zoo since Steve discovered the reptile species during a hunting trip in 1990.

“This is one of the highlights of my entire life and one of the most special moments ever for Australia Zoo. This is the very first Elseya irwini, or Irwin’s turtle, ever hatched for any zoological facility anywhere in the world,” he explained.

The video shows a photo of Steve with the one of the turtle species, before cutting to footage of Robert releasing the baby into a pond at the zoo.

“For the first time, we’ve got a little baby, and he’s gonna get his first swim in a brand new pond.”

Choking back tears, Robert reflected on what this milestone would mean to Steve.

“It’s just so surreal,” he said, he voice wavering. “And all those stories from Dad about just how amazing and beautiful they are… I don’t get emotional that much, but I just know Dad would be really proud, Dad would be stoked,” he said.

Steve was killed in 2006, at the age of 44, after he was fatally pierced by a stingray barb while filming a television episode on the Great Barrier Reef.

He was mourned by people worldwide, many of whom tuned into his educational nature programming over the years, including the hit show The Crocodile Hunter.

Now, Robert and his sister, Bindi Irwin, are continuing their dad’s legacy of working with animals and both frequently share memories of Steve’s life and conservation work.

In the caption for the video, Robert called the turtle’s birth “a special moment.”

“I think Dad would be pretty proud that we’ve become the first to successfully breed the turtle that he discovered,” he wrote.

  • Josh Duggar to stay in prison until 2032, appeal in child porn case rejected – National | Globalnews.ca

Josh Duggar to stay in prison until 2032, appeal in child porn case rejected – National | Globalnews.ca

Josh Duggar will remain in prison for many more years, after his appeal for a new child pornography trial was rejected.

Duggar, whose large family was the focus of TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting, was convicted in 2021 for downloading child sex abuse images and is currently serving a 12.5-year prison sentence.

Court documents obtained by several media outlets show that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit chose to affirm the reality star’s previous judgement in his child porn case last week, meaning he will continue to serve out his sentence.

It also means he won’t be released from prison until Oct. 2032.

Federal authorities investigated Duggar after Little Rock police detectives found child sexual abuse material was being shared by a computer traced to Duggar. Investigators testified that images depicting the sexual abuse of children, including toddlers, were downloaded in 2019 onto a computer at a car dealership Duggar owned.

    Story continues below advertisement

In April of 2021 he was arrested by Homeland Security and held without bond, until his trial eight months later.

His lawyer filed an appeal in October of last year, asking for a new trial, and during a February 2023 hearing lawyer Justin Gelfand argued that his client’s phone was seized while Duggar was trying to obtain legal representation when federal agents raised his place of business ahead of his 2021 arrest.

Duggar’s lawyers also argued that statements he made to investigators during the search of the business should not have been allowed at trial since his lawyer wasn’t present. Prosecutors said Duggar asked the agents, “What is this all about? Has somebody been downloading child pornography?” and that he declined to say whether he had looked at such material online, comments that were later used as evidence in the trial.

    Story continues below advertisement

The appeals panel said that although Duggar was read his rights, the agents questioning him made it clear that he wasn’t in custody and was free to leave. The panel also noted that he wasn’t arrested at the end of his questioning.

“To the contrary, he ended the interview on his own and then left the dealership — hardly an option available to someone in custody,” the court ruled.

TLC canceled 19 Kids and Counting in 2015 following allegations that Duggar had molested four of his sisters and a babysitter years earlier. Authorities began investigating the abuse in 2006 after receiving a tip from a family friend but concluded that the statute of limitations on any possible charges had expired.

Duggar’s parents said after the allegations resurfaced in 2015 that he had confessed to the fondling and apologized privately. Duggar then apologized publicly for unspecified behavior and resigned as a lobbyist for the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian group. Months later, he also publicly apologized for cheating on his wife and admitted to having a pornography addiction, for which he then sought treatment.

Heartwarming Mr. Dressup documentary sure to delight Canadians of all ages – National | Globalnews.ca

There are few personalities that unite Canadians quite like Mr. Dressup.

For 29 years, spanning an impressive 4,000 episodes, the beloved children’s show host appeared on television screens across the country, inviting kids to explore his iconic Tickle Trunk alongside a legion of puppet sidekicks, including the cherished duo of Casey and Finnegan.

And although many are familiar with the character portrayed by Ernie Coombs, far fewer know the endearing story of how Mr. Dressup came to be a mainstay on Canadian TV.

Now, a new documentary is set to explore that, taking a deep dive into the Mr. Dressup’s legacy as well as his profound impact on children’s programming.

‘Mr. Dressup: The Art of Make-Believe’ begins streaming on Prime Video Oct. 10.

    Amazon Prime Video

“There’s not enough time to discuss the things that I learned (while making the documentary),” Rob McCallum, the director of Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe, told Global News.

    Story continues below advertisement

“What really strikes me, if we want to get real for a second, was that as much as this was a kids’ show on the surface – made for kids to feel safe and feel loved by everybody – watching it with my kids it became much more about ‘Wow, I’m still learning from Mr. Dressup’. And, boy, I wish I was more patient like Ernie. I wish I was more in the moment and not distracted with everything that’s going on outside my home…how come we can’t be a little bit more like Mr. Dressup?”

Weaving together interviews from Canadian celebrities like Michael J. Fox, the Barenaked Ladies and Bif Naked, with archival footage from the show and stories from the late Coombs’ personal life, Mr. Dressup: The World of Make-Believe takes a closer look into the life of a man known for his kindness, inclusiveness and creativity.

“Ernie’s programming, and the programming around that timeframe, really focused on creativity from its simplicity,” Jani Lauzon, a puppeteer on the show, told Global News. “You can really create something out of nothing, and that was the incredible beauty of the show. All you needed was a piece of paper and some scissors and some glue or tape and you could create something.”

Global News sat down with McCallum, Lauzon and fellow puppeteer Jim Parker to discuss all things Mr. Dressup, the documentary, and the endearing and lasting relationship Coombs maintained with fellow children’s show host, Fred Rogers, of Mr. Rogers Neighbourhood fame. Watch the interview above.

  • Pamela Anderson raves about new natural, makeup-free look: ‘It’s freedom’ | Globalnews.ca

Pamela Anderson raves about new natural, makeup-free look: ‘It’s freedom’ | Globalnews.ca

Pamela Anderson is done with makeup.

For the last few months, the Ladysmith, B.C.-born Anderson — who for much of her career was best-known as a Hollywood bombshell and Playboy model — has ditched her makeup almost entirely, opting instead for a relaxed, fresh-faced look with her freckles on full display.

Even at the most high-profile events, like last week’s Vivienne Westwood Paris Fashion Week show, Anderson has done away with social norms and embraced her natural beauty.

The former Baywatch star wore only a light coat of mascara and vintage designer clothing from her own closet to the Paris event.

In an interview with Vogue France before the Vivienne Westwood show, Anderson, 56, said the choice not to wear a full face of makeup came subconsciously.

    Story continues below advertisement

“I was dressing in these beautiful clothes, and I thought, ‘I don’t want to compete with the clothes.’ I’m not trying to be the prettiest girl in the room,” she explained in the interview released Tuesday. “I feel like it’s freedom. It’s like a relief.”

Anderson did not have a glam team or stylist for the event, which are nearly ubiquitous for any celebrity.

“You have to challenge beauty sometimes,” she explained, adding that her mother had always said Anderson would one day tire of wearing makeup.

“If we all chase youth, or we’re all chasing our idea of what beauty is in fashion magazines and everything, we’re only going to be disappointed, or maybe a little bit sad.”

    Story continues below advertisement

Anderson said as a woman in the public eye, she wants to be a role model for others and prove that women of any age do not have to abide by rigid beauty standards.

    A ‘natural beauty revolution’

Many of Anderson’s fans, along with other celebrities, have praised Anderson for her new makeup-free look.

Actor Jamie Lee Curtis applauded her for not wearing makeup. In an Instagram post Sunday, Curtis, 64, said Anderson has launched the “natural beauty revolution.”

Curtis shared two photos of Anderson from the Isabel Marant show at Paris Fashion Week on Sept. 28.

“This woman showed up and claimed her seat at the table with nothing on her face,” she wrote. “I am so impressed and floored by this act of courage and rebellion.”

    Story continues below advertisement

In the comments, some of Curtis’ followers took issue with the actor’s categorization.

“I think that rather applauding women wearing no makeup, we should be applauding that she seems to have found her comfort zone and seems to be embracing what that is for her at that age,” one Instagram user wrote. “I don’t think we should start applauding less makeup, more makeup, etc., but rather women embracing what THEY want to do in the moment and not what anyone else wants them to do.”

Another chided that Anderson’s makeup-free look is “great but women should not be labeled brave for feeling comfortable in their own skin.”

Curtis made another post about Anderson only days later. She shared two stills from the Vogue France interview.

    Story continues below advertisement

    “FREEDOM IS BEAUTIFUL!” Curtis wrote.

Many others on social media echoed Curtis’ sentiment and shared their admiration for Anderson.

    Story continues below advertisement

In August, Anderson said she stopped wearing makeup after her friend and makeup artist Alexis Vogel died from breast cancer in 2019. The star told Elle she felt “better” not wearing makeup since Vogel’s death.

“I did notice that there were all these people doing big makeup looks, and it’s just like me to go against the grain and do the opposite what everyone’s doing,” she explained. “I think we all start looking a little funny when we get older. And I’m kind of laughing at myself when I look at the mirror. I go, ‘Wow, this is really…what’s happening to me?’ It’s a journey.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger warns ‘over-babying’ can create ‘generation of wimps’ – National | Globalnews.ca

Arnold Schwarzenegger wants young people to be comfortable with failure and struggle — characteristics he claims are necessary to develop mental resiliency.

In a Wednesday interview for SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, the 76-year-old action star worried that modern society is raising “a generation of wimps and weak people” overly concerned with hurting feelings.

“It’s nice to be considerate, I totally agree with that,” Schwarzenegger defended. “But let’s not over-baby the kids, and let’s not over-baby the people.”

Schwarzenegger said adults should be teaching children to be “tough” and “go through those painful moments.”

He argued those who baby themselves will never be able to reach their full potential.

Schwarzenegger compared the human mind to a bicep — just like the muscle, the mind needs resistance and pain in order to grow, he said.

    Story continues below advertisement

The former California governor maintained you can only become a strong person if you fail, get up again and continue to work hard.

“The more you struggle, the further you’re going to go, and the stronger you’re going to get,” he said. “You have to be able to struggle, and if you’re not able to, work on that.”

The Terminator actor continued: “The more you experience the things that you really don’t like, the more you can grow, and the tougher you get, and the more you can handle. It’s just that simple.”

Schwarzenegger told Stern the U.S. was not built by people “who slept in.”

“These were ballsy women and men that went out at 5 in the morning, and got up, and struggled, and fought and they worked their butts off. That’s what made this country great.”

Schwarzenegger appeared on The Howard Stern Show to promote his new book, Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life.

The self-help style book teaches readers Schwarzenegger’s “seven tools” for finding purpose in one’s life — clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back.

Grimes sues Elon Musk, claims he won’t let her ‘see my son’ – National | Globalnews.ca

Grimes, the mother of three of Elon Musk‘s children, has sued the billionaire businessman over parental rights, claiming he hasn’t let her see one of their two sons, multiple outlets are reporting.

The Canadian singer, whose real name is Claire Boucher, has claimed Musk will not give her access to one of their children, according to documents filed in the Superior Court of San Francisco last week.

The call to action aims to have the court name the legal parents of a child when they are not married.

Though the docket for the case is public, the filings are sealed. It seems Musk has not yet responded to the petition.

Grimes has not requested child support or custody rights, which are commonly filed with such a petition. The singer, 35, and Tesla CEO, 52, were never married but had three children together in their on-again, off-again relationship which began in 2018.

How Elon Musk and Grimes hit it off

The dispute, it’s believed, is centred around the couple’s youngest child, named Techo Mechanicus, whose birth last year was kept secret until this September, when his existence surfaced in a New York Times review of Musk’s biography.

Techno Mechanicus was born via surrogate in June 2022. His nickname, Tau, is a reference to the Greek letter that represents two times the value of pi, an irrational number important in geometry and mathematics.

Tau roughly equals 6.28, a nod to Musk’s birthday on June 28.

Musk and Grimes share two other children together: X Æ A-12, their three-year-old son who goes by X; and Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, their one-year-old daughter who goes by Y.

In total, Musk has 10 known living children: six with his first wife Justine Musk (one is deceased), three with Grimes, and two with Shivon Zilis, a Canadian executive who works at Neuralink, one of Musk’s companies.

    Story continues below advertisement

Zilis had twins in 2021 after Musk offered to be her sperm donor, according to Elon Musk, the biography by Walter Isaacson. This took place while Grimes was expecting the pair’s second child and she was unaware of the arrangement Musk had made with his employee.

In a since-deleted post on X last month, Grimes wrote: “Tell Shivon to unblock me and tell Elon to let me see my son or pls respond to my lawyer,” in response to a post from Isaacson.

Grimes added that the “situation” with Musk and Zilis’ twins was responsible for “utterly ripping my family apart.”

In a follow-up post, Grimes apologized for the statement, saying it was a “gut-level reaction to a thing that has been very hard for me.”

    Story continues below advertisement

“Communication about the twins wasn’t handled super well in the past, but I now totally understand what happened and totally forgive the situation.”

Grimes added in the post that she wished she could show “how cute little Techno is,” but the singer’s priority “is keeping my babies out of the public eye.”

Global News has reached out to Grimes for further comment.

Man with alleged ties to Tupac Shakur’s death indicted on murder charge – National | Globalnews.ca

Just over 27 years to the day after hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting, a suspect was arrested and charged with murder in Las Vegas on Friday, a long-sought development in one of the most high-profile open investigations in recent memory.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department told a press conference that Duane “Keefe D” Davis was arrested Friday morning. An indictment was handed down by a Nevada grand jury later that day, Clark County District Attorney Steven B. Wolfson said.

“It has taken countless hours — really decades — of work by the men and women of our homicide section to get to where we are today,” McMahill said.

“This investigation began on the night of Sept. 7, 1996. It is far from over.”

Tupac Shakur: Las Vegas attorney says authorities ‘didn’t surrender’ in pursuit of arrests

Davis, 60, is the only living person suspected to have been involved in the shooting. He has long denied being the one who pulled the trigger but has admitted publicly — including in his 2019 tell-all memoir, Compton Street Legend — to being in the vehicle that pulled up next to Shakur’s that fateful night.

    Story continues below advertisement

Wolfson told reporters Davis was being charged with open murder with use of a deadly weapon with a gang enhancement for his alleged involvement in the killing.

“We have an aiding and abetting statute which provides that if you help somebody commit a crime, you can be equally as guilty,” he said.

Las Vegas police Lt. Jason Johansson went further, describing Davis as the “shot caller for this group of individuals” who “orchestrated the plan that was carried out to commit this crime.”

The arrest comes two months after Las Vegas police raided Davis’ wife’s home July 17 in neighboring Henderson. Documents said police were looking for items “concerning the murder of Tupac Shakur.”

In this Monday evening, July 17, 2023 image taken from police body camera video provided by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, an unidentified man and woman are seen as SWAT officers raided a home in the nearby city of Henderson, Nev., in connection with the 1997 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur near the Las Vegas Strip.

Police reported collecting multiple computers, a cellphone and hard drive, a Vibe magazine that featured Shakur, several .40-caliber bullets, two “tubs containing photographs” and a copy of Davis memoir.

    Story continues below advertisement

In the book, Davis said he broke his silence over Tupac’s killing in 2010 during a closed-door meeting with federal and local authorities. At the time, he was 46 and facing life in prison on drug charges when he agreed to speak with the authorities.

“They promised they would shred the indictment and stop the grand jury if I helped them out,” he wrote.

He has described himself as one of the last living witnesses to the shooting.

Johansson, who laid out the timeline of the investigation, said many of the facts outlined in the indictment had been known by detectives for decades. But police were unable to obtain the “necessary evidence” needed to move forward with an arrest and prosecution until recently.

He said additional information was first obtained in 2018 that led investigators back to Davis.

Shakur was 25 when he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip on the night of Sept. 7, 1996. The rapper was in a BMW driven by Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight in a convoy of about 10 cars. They were waiting at a red light when a white Cadillac pulled up next to them and gunfire erupted.

    Story continues below advertisement

Shakur was shot multiple times and died a week later.

In 2018, after a cancer diagnosis, Davis admitted publicly in an interview for a BET show to being inside the Cadillac during the attack. He implicated his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, saying he was one of two people in the back seat where the shots were fired.

The shooting happened shortly after a casino brawl that same evening evening involving Anderson, Shakur and others. Both Davis and Anderson were members of the South Side Compton Crips, a gang whose members had allegedly attacked an associated of Shakur earlier in 1996.

Anderson denied any involvement in the Shakur shooting. He died two years later in a shooting in Compton, Calif.

Shakur’s death came as his fourth solo album, All Eyez on Me, remained on the charts, with some 5 million copies sold. Nominated six times for a Grammy Award, Shakur is largely considered one of the most influential and versatile rappers of all time.

Shakur was feuding at the time with rap rival Biggie Smalls, also known as the Notorious B.I.G., who was fatally shot in March 1997. At the time, both rappers were in the middle of an East Coast-West Coast rivalry that primarily defined the hip-hop scene during the mid-1990s.

Wolfson said Shakur’s family was “welcoming” the news of Davis’ indictment and was “pleased” justice was being served after so long. He added the family was unlikely to attend Davis’ arraignment.

In a statement Friday, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, the rapper’s sister, described the arrest as a victory.

“This is no doubt a pivotal moment. The silence of the past 27 years surrounding this case has spoken loudly in our community,” she said. “It’s important to me that the world, the country, the justice system, and our people acknowledge the gravity of the passing of this man, my brother, my mother’s son, my father’s son.”

McMahill took time to praise the investigative team, including detectives who had since retired from active duty but attended Friday’s announcement.

“I know there’s been many people who did not believe that the murder of Tupac Shakur was important to this police department,” he said. “I’m here to tell you that was simply not the case.”

    Retired detective says arrest overdue

Greg Kading, a retired Los Angeles police detective who spent years investigating the Shakur killing and wrote a book about it, said he would not be surprised by Davis’s indictment and arrest.

    Story continues below advertisement

“It’s so long overdue,” Kading told The Associated Press during a recent interview. “People have been yearning for him to be arrested for a long time. It’s never been unsolved in our minds. It’s been unprosecuted.”

Kading said he interviewed Davis in 2008 and 2009, during Los Angeles police investigations of the killings of Shakur in Las Vegas and the slaying of Biggie Smalls.

Kading said also that he talked with a Las Vegas police detective about the case, including after the SWAT raid in July at the home in Henderson.

The former Los Angeles police detective said he believed the investigation gained new momentum in recent years following Davis’s public descriptions of his role in the killing, including his 2019 tell-all memoir.

“It’s those events that have given Las Vegas the ammunition and the leverage to move forward,” Kading said. “Prior to Keefe D’s public declarations, the cases were unprosecutable as they stood.”

    Story continues below advertisement

“He put himself squarely in the middle of the conspiracy,” Kading said of Davis and the Shakur slaying. “He had acquired the gun, he had given the gun to the shooter and he had been present in the vehicle when they hunted down and located both Tupac and Suge (Knight).”

Kading noted that Davis is the last living person among the four people who were in the vehicle from which shots were fired at Shakur and rapper Marion “Suge” Knight. Others were Davis’s nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, Terrence “Bubble Up” Brown and DeAndre “Freaky” Smith.

“It’s a concerted effort of conspirators,” Kading said, adding that he believed that because the killing was premeditated Davis could face a first-degree murder charge.

“All the other direct conspirators or participants are all dead,” Kading said. “Keefe D is the last man standing among the individuals that conspired to kill Tupac.”

The days of sharing your Disney+ password are coming to an end – National | Globalnews.ca

Sharing is caring … unless it’s your Disney+ password, apparently.

Disney has announced it will begin cracking down on password sharing in Canada starting Nov. 1, 2023, meaning those who do not live in the same household will no longer be able to share an account for the streaming site. (Technically, Disney’s terms have never permitted password sharing, but it has not been enforced in the past.)

In an email to Canadian subscribers this week, the platform outlined plans to coincide the crackdown with the launch of its ad-supported membership this fall, which it outlines in updates to its Subscriber Agreement.

“Unless otherwise permitted by your Service Tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household. ‘Household’ means the collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside therein. Additional usage rules may apply for certain Service Tiers,” the amended agreement reads.

“We may, in our sole discretion, analyze the use of your account to determine compliance with this Agreement. If we determine that you have violated this Agreement, we may limit or terminate access to the Service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this Agreement (including those set forth in Section 6 of this Agreement).”

Subscribers are now asked to switch to a new plan before the policy changes take place.

Disney+ follows Netflix, which announced earlier this year that it would clamp down on password sharing. The platform also joins Prime Video, Netflix and others in offering tiered subscriptions with ads.

Netflix now allows users who subscribe to its highest tiers to continue sharing their passwords with people outside their household, so long as they pay an additional $7.99/month. Disney+ may have plans to follow suit, as its new agreement outlines that different service tiers will come into effect, although it hasn’t yet outlined the terms for the various tiers.

While the updates will come into effect on Nov. 1 for most of Canada, Quebecers can expect to see the update on their next billing date on or after Nov. 1.

Titanic crew member’s weathered skeleton key sells for $131K at auction | Globalnews.ca

A key used aboard the Titanic that was recovered in the aftermath of the ship’s sinking has sold at auction for US$131,250, after being passed through four generations of a crew member’s family.

The weathered skeleton key with a brass plate inscribed with “PANTRYMAN” belonged to first-class saloon steward Alfred Arnold Deeble, and was found on his body.

A key once owned by 1st class saloon steward Alfred Arnold Deeble, who died in the Titanic sinking, has fetched $131,250 US at auction.

    Provided/RR Auction

Boston-based RR Auction sold the lot through online bidding that concluded this past weekend.

    Story continues below advertisement

On April 14, 1912, RMS Titanic struck an iceberg and sank in the cold Atlantic about 700 nautical miles from Nova Scotia, killing 1,497 of the 2,209 passengers and crew on board.

Deeble’s body was recovered by Halifax-based cable ship, the MacKay-Bennett, one of 337 bodies plucked from the Atlantic after the tragedy.

He was buried at Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax, and part of the auction lot includes a 2011 photo of his great-niece, Linda Jo McNulty Davis, visiting his gravesite.

The auction lot includes photos from the Deeble family, and a photo of his great-niece visiting his gravesite in Halifax in 2011.

    Provided/RR Auction

McNulty Davis’s grandmother, Lily Deeble, was instrumental in bringing the key home to her family.

Not only did she lose her brother Alfred in the sinking, but her fiancé John Herbert Strugnell — another Titanic steward — also perished.

    Story continues below advertisement

“Any Titanic artifact with a well-documented lineage is of the utmost desirability. That this originates directly from the family who witnessed dual tragedies in the deaths of saloon stewards Alfred Arnold Deeble and John Herbert Strugnell makes it all the more poignant,” said Bobby Livingston, executive vice-president with RR Auction, in a statement.

An express package from Nova Scotia

Deeble, was born in Clerkenwell, London in 1877, had served in the Royal Navy and had a career as a singer.

In 1912, he was employed by the White Star Line and was on Titanic’s maiden voyage.

Documents on the Nova Scotia Archives’ RMS Titanic Resource Guide tell the story of Deeble’s key — and his sister Lily’s efforts to get it back.

On a piece of yellowed paper documenting his death, Deeble was marked as body no. 270. Initially, he’s unidentified and listed as wearing black pants, a white coat with buttons and a green raincoat.

His effects include a gold watch, a gold ring, and “one bunch keys.”

Alfred Deeble’s remains were recorded as body no. 270 and recovered by the MacKay-Bennett.

    Nova Scotia Archives

In pencil, someone later notes the keys say “Pantryman” and “Chief Storekeeper,” but Deeble’s name appears to be misspelled as they try to identify him.

    Story continues below advertisement

Months later, a letter from White Star Line to Nova Scotia’s deputy provincial secretary, Frederick F. Mathers, on Oct. 4, 1912, asks for his belongings.

“Our Southampton Office has received a request from both the Board of Trade and the sister of this member of the crew for the effects found on the body,” the message begins.

“They ask us if we will place the matter before you, so we ask you to kindly give the case your consideration.”

The White Star Line wrote to Nova Scotia’s deputy provincial secretary to ask for Deeble’s effects on behalf of his sister.

    Nova Scotia Archives

On Oct. 8, 1912, Mathers wrote White Star Line back to say he had indeed sent the items, which he valued to be $30.

“The effects in this case are of little value, and I am therefore sending you today by express a package containing these effects,” he wrote.

    Story continues below advertisement

From then on, the key remained in the family and was first passed down from Lily to her daughter, according to RR Auction.

The auction house called the artifact “remarkable” and said it now “transitions into a new chapter of its storied journey.”

Shakira charged with tax evasion for 2nd time, accused of owing $9.5M – National | Globalnews.ca

Though it may seem like celebrities use their money Whenever, Wherever, the Spanish government has accused Shakira of concealing her income.

Prosecutors in Barcelona on Tuesday announced new charges against the singer, who they claim failed to pay 6.7 million euros (over C$9.5 million) in taxes on her 2018 income.

This is the second time the 46-year-old has been accused of tax evasion in Spain.

According to The Associated Press, officials alleged Shakira used an offshore company based in a tax haven to dodge taxation in Spain. Prosecutors also claimed the Grammy-winning singer failed to declare millions of euros from advance payments she earned for her El Dorado World Tour in 2018.

Shakira has not commented publicly on the new fiscal allegations against her. She was reportedly notified of the charges while in Miami, where she lives.

    Story continues below advertisement

An investigation into Shakira’s financial reporting in Spain began in 2018. She was charged with tax evasion later that year and accused of skipping out on more than 14.5 million euros (about C$20 million) owed between 2012 and 2014.

Prosecutors argued that since Shakira apparently spent more than half of the 2012 to 2014 period in Spain, she was required to pay taxes in the country, despite Spain not being her official residence.

When she was first charged with tax evasion, Shakira’s representative said she’s “always acted in accordance with the law and under the advice of the best tax experts.”

The new charges are part of a separate case that was opened in July 2023.

The singer will face trial in November.

Shakira has been linked to Spain since she started dating now-retired soccer player Gerard Pique. The couple, who have two children, lived together in Barcelona until last year, when they ended their 11-year relationship.

Over the past decade, Spanish tax authorities have cracked down on soccer stars like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for not paying their full due in taxes. Those players were found guilty of tax evasion but avoided prison time thanks to a provision that allows a judge to waive sentences under two years in length for first-time offenders.

Rob Schneider cancels Canada trip after man who fought for Nazis honoured in Parliament – National | Globalnews.ca

Comedian Rob Schneider said he’s cancelled an upcoming visit to Canada after a parliamentary tribute last week honoured a Ukrainian Second World War veteran who fought for Nazi Germany.

On Friday, 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka was honoured in the House of Commons with a standing ovation across party lines. The tribute has triggered international outrage, as it was later revealed Hunka fought in Ukraine for the First Ukrainian Division, a German-armed Nazi military unit.

During his speech, House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota described Hunka as a “war hero.” He invited Hunka to be honoured while Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is Jewish, was present for his first official visit since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

On Monday, Schneider told his social media followers he “just canceled my trip to Canada” in reaction to the incident.

    Story continues below advertisement

The 59-year-old comedian, whose father is Jewish, described the tribute as “beyond the pale,” “despicable” and “outrageous.”

Schneider also called Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a tyrant and referenced the “peaceful trucker protests” that blocked several areas around Parliament Hill for three weeks and subsequently led to dozens of arrests. Demonstrations also shut down at least four border crossings elsewhere in the country.

The former Saturday Night Live cast member wrote several more posts on X, formerly Twitter, chastizing “stupid fing Canadians” for not knowing Hunka fought for the Nazis.

“This guy fought for Hitler! Not like what we call people Hitler today. THEE Hitler! Like in actual Adolf Hitler,” Schneider wrote.

    Story continues below advertisement

He said even Canadian actor William Shatner should apologize.

“I also feel I should apologize now for once DATING a girl who was Canadian,” Schneider prodded. “I apologize. I also apologize for every Hockey game I’ve watched and for all the maple syrup I’ve drizzled on my pancakes.”

Global News reached out to Schneider’s publicist for comment but has not received a reply.

On Friday, Rota described Hunka to the House of Commons as a veteran who fought for “Ukrainian independence against the Russians.” In reality, the First Ukrainian Division to which Hunka belonged (also known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division) was a voluntary unit that was under the command of the Nazis.

    Story continues below advertisement

Though Rota apologized for honouring Hunka in Parliament, he resigned on Tuesday following pressure from the NDP, the Bloc Québécois and Jewish groups across the country.

His resignation takes effect at the end of business day Wednesday.

“I must step down as your speaker. I reiterate my profound regret for my error in recognizing an individual in the House during the joint address to Parliament and President Zelenskyy,” Rota said in the House of Commons.

“That public recognition has caused pain to individuals and communities, including the Jewish community in Canada and around the world, in addition to survivors of Nazi atrocities in Poland, among other nations. I accept full responsibility for my actions.”

“My intention was to show that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is not a new one; that Ukrainians have unfortunately been subject to foreign aggression for far too long and that this must end,” Rota said on Monday.

    Story continues below advertisement

“I have subsequently become aware of more information which causes me to regret my decision to recognize this individual. I wish to apologize to the House. I am deeply sorry that I have offended many with my gesture and remarks.”

Hunka is a constituent of Rota’s Ontario riding, Nipissing-Timiskaming.

Schneider is a comedian and actor best known for his stint as a cast member and writer for NBC’s series Saturday Night Live from 1988 to 1994. He went on to star in numerous films including Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo and The Benchwarmers.

Ads are coming to Amazon Prime Video — or you can escape them for a fee – National | Globalnews.ca

Amazon Prime Video customers will soon start seeing ads while streaming movies and shows, unless, of course, they want to pay more for their subscription.

Customers in Canada will begin seeing advertisements in “early 2024,” the tech giant announced Friday, but did not give an exact date for the switch.

“To continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time, starting in early 2024, Prime Video shows and movies will include limited advertisements,” the company said in its statement, adding that it will “aim to have meaningfully fewer ads” than traditional broadcasters or its rivals.

Subscribers will be able to opt out of seeing ads during their streaming sessions, provided they’re OK with forking over a bit more cash.

While a pricing plan hasn’t been announced for Canada (Global News reached out to Amazon and is awaiting a response), the company said it will roll out an ad-free tier for U.S. customers at an additional $2.99 per month.

    Story continues below advertisement

Currently, American Prime memberships cost $14.99 per month or $139 per year, while Canadians pay $9.99 per month and $99.99 per year.

Customers will get an email in the weeks leading up to the advertising rollout, which will include the option to sign up for the ad-free tier. Amazon says there will be no change to the current price of a Prime membership in 2024.

Live events and sports, however, will continue to feature ads in the ad-free tier, the company said in its announcement.

Amazon is just the latest streaming platform making the what-feels-like-inevitable move to include ads in their once ad-free services. Rival streamers Netflix, Disney+ and Crave all offer ad-supported tiers of service, at a lower cost.

The introduction of ad-supported streaming is just one of the ways media companies are trying to make their streaming businesses profitable — many have also implemented crackdowns on password sharing in recent years.

Taylor Swift sends voter registration numbers surging with a single post – National | Globalnews.ca

On National Voter Registration Day in the U.S., Taylor Swift urged her millions of fans to Speak Now and let their democratic voices be heard. Her callout led to “record-breaking traffic” to Vote.org,  a non-profit voting registration website, which said it saw the most sign-ups in years thanks to the pop star’s help.

Swift shared a message on her Instagram story Tuesday morning asking her fans if they had registered to vote yet for the upcoming 2024 U.S. elections.

“I’ve been so lucky to see so many of you guys at my US shows recently. I’ve heard you raise your voices, and I know how powerful they are. Make sure you’re ready to use them in our elections this year!”

Taylor Swift announces ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ at final U.S. concert to fans’ elation

Within the hour that Swift made her post, traffic on the Vote.org website shot up 1226 per cent, according to Vote.org CEO Andrea Hailey.

    Story continues below advertisement

“Our site was averaging 13,000 users every 30 minutes — a number that Taylor Swift would be proud of,” Hailey wrote in a press release shared with Global News.

Thirteen, as Swifties would know, is the pop star’s lucky number.

In total, 35,252 people registered to vote through the site on Tuesday, an improvement of 22.5 per cent compared with last year’s campaign. Vote.org states that this year’s National Voter Registration Day was the most successful since 2020, a year that saw now-President Joe Biden face off against then-incumbent Donald Trump in a highly contentious election.

This year’s voter registration numbers were helped in part by surging interest among young people. Compared with last year’s drive, there was a 115 per cent increase in 18-year-olds registering to vote.

“Time and time again young people are showing up and demonstrating they care about their rights and access to the ballot box,” Hailey said.

In a tweet, Hailey added: “Wanna know something even more wild? We see an 849% increase here compared to 2021. 849%! This generation’s eagerness to participate is a game changer. They are the future, and their energy will shape the outcomes of upcoming elections.”

    Story continues below advertisement

Vote.org says it is “seizing on this momentum” to announce plans to register eight million voters before Americans go to the ballot box in 2024.

“We’ve already launched our registration program with our youth efforts across campuses, influencer engagement, radio, digital, social media and direct voter contacts. The 2024 election is already here, and now, it’s time to turn this enthusiasm into votes,” Hailey said.

Until recently, Swift was famously reticent to discuss political issues in public. That all changed in 2018 when she came out in support of Tennessee Senate candidate Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, while slamming his Republican opponent Marsha Blackburn on her track record with LGBTQ2+ and women’s rights.

“In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now,” Swift wrote at the time. Blackburn went on to win the Senate election.

In 2020, Swift endorsed Biden and Kamala Harris’ campaign, saying at the time that she believed America “has a chance to start the healing process it so desperately needs,” under their leadership.

Russell Brand denies sexual assault claims as police urged to investigate – National | Globalnews.ca

NOTE: The following article contains disturbing content. Please read at your own discretion.

Four women have accused comedian Russell Brand of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse as part of an exposé published by three U.K. news agencies.

The Sunday Times, The Times of London and Channel 4’s investigative program Dispatches shared the allegations from Brand’s accusers this weekend. All four women, who were unnamed, said Brand, 48, sexually assaulted them between 2006 and 2013, at the height of Brand’s mainstream fame.

Brand has vehemently denied all of the allegations made against him.

The comedian posted a video before the reports were made public and said two “mainstream media” companies had reached out to him about the story. He said he received “extremely disturbing” letters outlining the allegations against him.

    Story continues below advertisement

“Amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute,” he said. “These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies and, as I have written about extensively in my books, I was very, very promiscuous.”

Brand said, despite his promiscuity, “the relationships I had were absolutely, always consensual.”

“I was always transparent about that then, almost too transparent, and I am being transparent about it now as well,” he continued.

Brand, who in recent years has become somewhat of a lifestyle guru and political commentator, questioned whether there is “another agenda at play.” He implied the allegations against him were part of a “coordinated media attack” conducted in retaliation for his public skepticism of mainstream news organizations, politics and his affiliations with podcasters like Joe Rogan.

    The allegations against Brand

The four women whose allegations were included in the bombshell Brand exposé have accused the comedian of abusive, emotionally manipulative — and in some cases, predatory — behaviour.

One accuser said Brand began a relationship with her when she was only 16 and he was 31 years old. The woman said Brand often referred to her as “The Child” throughout their three-month relationship, which she also alleged was emotionally abusive. She said Brand asked her to read passages from Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita, about a middle-aged man who kidnaps and sexually abuses a 12-year-old girl.

    Story continues below advertisement

The woman told the media outlets Brand sexually assaulted her at his home shortly before their relationship ended. The anonymous accuser claimed Brand forced her to perform oral sex on him, and said he “engaged in the behaviours of a groomer.”

A second accuser alleged Brand raped her without a condom in his Los Angeles home in 2012. The woman said she was treated at a rape crisis centre the same day. (The Times independently confirmed the woman’s medical records.)

After the alleged rape, the woman said she texted Brand “When a girl say(s) NO it means no.” Brand reportedly replied and apologized over text.

The third woman accused Brand of sexually assaulting her in 2013 while they worked together in Los Angeles. She told the press that he threatened to sue her if she told anyone else about his apparent mistreatment.

The fourth accuser, who met Brand in the U.K., said the comedian was “physically and emotionally abusive” to her.

Among other allegations included in the multi-outlet exposé, Brand’s former personal assistant Helen Berger said she saw Brand share “intimate pictures of women” with his friends.

NOTE: The video below contains sexually graphic descriptions. Please watch at your own discretion.

    Story continues below advertisement

In separate allegations, a runner said Brand once flashed his genitals at her in a dressing room and implied that she ought to perform oral sex.

Comedian Daniel Sloss told The Times he was aware of forums used by other female comedians and entertainers to warn one another about Brand and other alleged Hollywood abusers.

A number of old clips from Brand’s time as a radio DJ for the BBC and MTV U.K., where he started his career, have also resurfaced in the U.K. reports. One such radio clip sees Brand offer to bring his assistant to meet Jimmy Saville — the late media personality who sexually assaulted hundreds of people. Saville requested she be nude.

    Story continues below advertisement

Will there be a police investigation?

London’s Metropolitan Police said they are “aware of media reporting of a series of allegations of sexual assault” but have not received any official reports, according to the BBC.

“If anyone believes they have been the victim of a sexual assault, no matter how long ago it happened, we would encourage them to contact police,” the agency said.

The Los Angeles Police Department released a similar statement, claiming it has never been told “of any incidents, reports or allegations regarding Russell Brand or any of the accusers.”

Regardless, the U.K. chair of the Commons women and equalities committee, Caroline Nokes, and the pensions minister, Laura Trott, have both called for there to be a police investigation into Brand.

Nokes, in an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Today program, said the allegations against Brand are “incredibly shocking and criminal.”

“I would very much hope that complaints will be made both to the Metropolitan Police and indeed in the States, because this merits and needs a criminal investigation, because for too long we have seen men – and the perpetrators of these sorts of crimes are almost invariably men – not being held to account for their behaviours and their actions,” she said.

    Story continues below advertisement

    The fallout

A number of Brand’s former employers, including Channel 4, the BBC and Banjiay U.K., which produced the Big Brother spinoff hosted by Brand, Big Brother’s Big Mouth, have launched investigations into Brand’s conduct while an employee.

The comedian also had his publishing deal with Pan Macmillan imprint Bluebird suspended amid the outpouring of allegations.

“These are very serious allegations and in the light of them, Bluebird has taken the decision to pause all future publishing with Russell Brand,” a Bluebird representative told Variety.

Brand was slated to release a followup to his 2018 book Recovery: Freedom from our Addictions. It is not yet clear what will happen to Brand’s latest written work.

Brand rose to fame as a standup comic in Britain in the early 2000s, which led to starring roles on Channel 4 and later BBC Radio, where he capitalized on a reputation for outrageous behaviour and risqué banter.

He later made the jump to Hollywood, appearing in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall in 2008 and the remake of Arthur in 2011. Brand was married to U.S. pop star Katy Perry from 2010 to 2012.

In recent years, he transformed himself into a political commentator and influencer posting YouTube videos on subjects such as personal freedom and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Adlakha, an expert in the field, emphasizes that CBD usage can vary widely among individuals due to differences in body composition and sensitivities to cannabinoids.

When asked about recommendations for determining the appropriate dosage of CBD, Dr. Adlakha explains: “There are no regulated guidelines for CBD dosing, although it is recommended to start at lower doses (i.e., 10-25mg) and then dose up slowly to find the ‘sweet spot.’ Everyone’s body composition and sensitivities to cannabinoids can be very different from one another.”

Everyone is different, so beginning slowly until achieving the desired effect is best. Without regulations in place to safeguard dosing guidelines, it’s best to start slow. Unlike prescription medications, where doctors prescribe…

Ashton Kutcher resigns from anti-child-sex-abuse board following backlash – National | Globalnews.ca

Ashton Kutcher is stepping down as chairman of the board of an anti-child-sex-abuse organization he co-founded, called Thorn, as he continues to face fallout and outrage for supporting rapist Danny Masterson.

TIME magazine reports that his wife, Mila Kunis, is also stepping down in her role as an observer on Thorn’s board.

“Victims of sexual abuse have been historically silenced and the character statement I submitted is yet another painful instance of questioning victims who are brave enough to share their experiences,” Kutcher wrote in a letter dated Thursday to Thorn’s board, which was shared on Thorn’s website as well as with TIME.

“After my wife and I spent several days of listening, personal reflection, learning, and conversations with survivors and the employees and leadership at Thorn, I have determined the responsible thing for me to do is resign as Chairman of the Board, effectively immediately,” Kutcher wrote. “I cannot allow my error in judgment to distract from our efforts and the children we serve.”

Kutcher and Kunis made headlines late last week when it was revealed they wrote letters of support for Masterson, asking the presiding judge for leniency while determining sentencing for Masterson, who was found guilty of two counts of rape.

The co-stars, who are now married, were once main characters on That ’70s Show alongside Masterson. Their letters vouched for Masterson’s “exceptional character.”

“I do not believe he is an ongoing harm to society,” Kutcher wrote, while Kunis described Masterson as an “outstanding role model and friend.”

Outrage over the letters ensued, prompting the couple to share a video to Instagram Sunday where Kutcher explained that Masterson’s family had asked them to write character letters detailing “the person that we knew for 25 years so that the judge could take that into full consideration relative to the sentencing.”

“The letters were not written to question the legitimacy of the judicial system or the validity of the jury’s ruling,” Kunis said.

The couple were just two of a reported 50 people who wrote letters of support to Judge Charlaine Olmeda.

However, the letters didn’t appear to do much to sway the judge’s mind, and Masterson was sentenced to 30 years to life behind bars.

And while Kunis and Kutcher have both been subject to much scorn and vitriol – including very public draggings from several fellow celebrities – Kutcher’s come under additional scrutiny for his advocacy in the anti-child-sex-trafficking space.

“The mission must always be the priority and I want to offer my heartfelt apology to all victims of sexual violence and everyone at Thorn who I hurt by what I did,” Kutcher wrote to Thorn’s board. “And to the broader advocacy community, I am deeply sorry. I remain proud of what we have accomplished in the past decade and will continue to support Thorn’s work. Thank you for your tireless advocacy and dedication to this cause.”

Thorn was founded in 2009 by Kutcher and his then-wife, Demi Moore, under the name DNA Foundation. Thorn develops tools and technology to help tech companies remove child sex abuse material from online spaces, as well as assist law enforcement in identifying victims.

“Ashton founded Thorn over a decade ago with one goal in mind: to protect children from sexual abuse and give them the childhood they deserve,” Suzanne Bell, a board member at Thorn, said in a statement.

“His unwavering dedication and commitment to Thorn throughout its journey have enabled the organization to become the leader that it is in the child safety ecosystem. It has been my privilege to join him on this mission.”

  • Drew Barrymore tearfully apologizes, but her talk show will continue during strike – National | Globalnews.ca

Drew Barrymore tearfully apologizes, but her talk show will continue during strike – National | Globalnews.ca

After harsh blowback, Drew Barrymore shed a few tears while apologizing to the currently striking Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) — but said she will continue production of her daytime talker The Drew Barrymore Show.

In a video posted to Instagram on Friday, Barrymore, 48, tried to offer an explanation for her decision to resume filming despite the ongoing writers’ strike.

“I believe there’s nothing I can do or say in this moment to make it OK,” Barrymore started. “I wanted to own a decision, so that it wasn’t a PR-protected situation, and I would just take full responsibility for my actions.”

In the video, Barrymore appeared makeup-free and was wearing a slouchy pink sweater with her glasses on her head. At times, she seemed to be reading something behind her camera.

“I know there is just nothing I can do that will make this OK to those that it is not OK with. I fully accept that. I fully understand that,” she said as she became visibly emotional. “There are so many reasons why this is so complex, and I just want everyone to know my intentions have never been in a place to upset or hurt anymore. It’s not who I am. I’ve been through so many ups and downs in my life, and this is one of them.”

“I deeply apologize to writers. I deeply apologize to unions,” she said.

Barrymore tried to answer questions about why she would choose to continue the show amid the strike — and without her team of WGA writers.

“I certainly couldn’t have expected this kind of attention, and we aren’t going to break rules and we will be in compliance. I wanted to do this because as I said, this is bigger than me and there are other people’s jobs on the line,” she said.

Barrymore said she does not have a “PR machine behind her.”

“I didn’t want to hide behind people, so I won’t, and I won’t polish this with bells and whistles and publicists and corporate rhetoric,” she said. “I’ll just stand out there and accept and be responsible.”

She spoke about how, since The Drew Barrymore Show first launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, she’s always envisioned the production as “a show that was there for people in sensitive times.”

“I weighed the scales and I thought, ‘If we could go on during a global pandemic and everything the world has experienced through 2020, why would this sideline us?’” she said. “So, I want to just put one foot in front of the other and make a show that’s there for people, regardless of anything else that’s happening in the world, because that’s when I think we all need something that wants to be there being very realistic in very realistic times. So that is my why.”

In a statement released Sunday, Barrymore said that she personally owns the decision to resume production of The Drew Barrymore Show.

“I own this choice,” the 50 First Dates actor said in a statement. “We are in compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind.”

Already, Barrymore’s apology has not been well received. Many of her critics, and upset WGA members, said if she were truly sorry, she would cease filming The Drew Barrymore Show.

Since the release of her initial statement, many WGA members and supporters have questioned whether Barrymore is a “scab” or will employ “scab writers” in place of union members. (A scab is someone who crosses picket lines to work in place of a striking employee.)

This week, Barrymore’s decision to resume production saw her dropped as the host of the 74th U.S. National Book Awards.

“The National Book Awards is an evening dedicated to celebrating the power of literature, and the incomparable contributions of writers to our culture,” the foundation wrote in a statement. “In light of the announcement that ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ will resume production, the National Book Foundation has rescinded Ms. Barrymore’s invitation to host the 74th National Book Awards Ceremony.”

Resuming production of ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’

The Drew Barrymore Show began taping new episodes at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City this week, despite little sign of resolution in the ongoing writers’ strike.

As a result, episodes of the talk show filmed during the strike will not employ any writers who belong to the Writers Guild of America (WGA).

The decision angered members and supporters of the WGA, several of whom protested outside the CBS Broadcast Center during this week’s filming. Numerous striking staff writers from The Drew Barrymore were in attendance and carried picket signs while they chanted, “We don’t get it. Shut it down!”

Writers Guild of America, East said any writing currently being done on The Drew Barrymore Show is in violation of the WGA strike.

Barrymore’s work as host of the talk show is not in violation of any strike rules. According to Variety, actors on CBS’ The Drew Barrymore Show are covered by a different SAG-AFTRA contract than the one currently in dispute.

New episodes of The Drew Barrymore Show are expected to air starting Sept. 18.

The Drew Barrymore Show is not the only production making the choice to return despite ongoing strikes. Warner Bros. Television’s The Jennifer Hudson Show and CBS’s The Talk are also set to return to production in the coming weeks. These productions will also continue without employing WGA writers.

  • ‘The Blind Side’ parents say they never intended to adopt Michael Oher – National | Globalnews.ca

‘The Blind Side’ parents say they never intended to adopt Michael Oher – National | Globalnews.ca

Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy have hit back at Michael Oher, claiming there was “never an intent to adopt him” despite the former NFL player’s bombshell lawsuit alleging he was tricked into entering a conservatorship.

The Tuohy couple filed their response to Oher’s lawsuit on Thursday in the Shelby County Probate Court in Tennessee. In the legal filing, the Tuohys said they “are ready, willing, and able” to end Oher’s conservatorship.

Oher, whose life served as inspiration for the book and film The Blind Side, filed a lawsuit against the Tuohys that accused them of using a conservatorship to gain control of his finances. He claimed Sean and Leigh Anne have made “millions” profiting off his name and story since the Oscar-winning movie was released in 2009. Oher has never been a fan of the movie about his life.

In the new filing, the Tuohys, both 63, “vehemently deny” that they ever told Oher, 37, he would be adopted.

They note that though they “occasionally” called Oher “son,” the word was always used “in the colloquial sense.” The Tuohys said they have always felt Oher was like a son to them, just not in a legal sense. The couple does not believe calling Oher “son” ever caused him “any irreparable harm,” as he claimed in his own lawsuit.

They asked the court to dismiss Oher’s request for financial compensation. Oher also asked for the Tuohys to file a fulsome accounting of his finances, which the couple admitted they have never done.

The Tuohys have maintained they established a conservatorship when he was 18 to help Oher obtain health insurance and a driver’s licence and be admitted to college. They said the conservatorship allowed Oher to skirt NCAA rules that may have impeded his ability to play football for the University of Mississippi, where the Tuohys were donors.

In his lawsuit, Oher said he did not know about the conservatorship until February 2023. The Tuohy couple claimed Oher was aware of the arrangement and pointed to his 2011 memoir I Beat The Odds as proof, since Oher referred to the Tuohys as his “legal conservators.”

Oher previously argued the Tuohys saw him as “a gullible young man whose athletic talent could be exploited for their own benefit.” He’s asked for a full accounting of the money earned off the use of his name and story.

    Story continues below advertisement

The Tuohys claimed they “never negotiated any contract with 20th Century Fox or others” in regard to the movie The Blind Side. They said arrangements were made by Michael Lewis, who wrote the book The Blind Side.

The Tuohys said the payment from the film was split between them, Oher and the couple’s two biological children, Collins Tuohy and Sean Tuohy Jr.

They claimed everyone, including Oher, “received a portion of the money paid to Michael Lewis which was something less than US$225,000” (about C$304,500).

“It is important to note that (Oher’s) share was paid to (the Tuohys) who paid the taxes due on these funds for some period of time but still cut a check for a full share (20%) to (Oher),” the legal filing reads.

Oher has not yet commented publicly on the Tuohys’ legal response.

The Tuohys claimed last month that Oher has, in the past, attempted to extract money from them and threatened to plant a negative story in the press if the Tuohys didn’t pay him US$15 million (just over C$20.2 million).

Oher was the 23rd overall pick in the 2009 draft out of Mississippi, and he spent his first five seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, where he won a Super Bowl. He played 110 games over eight NFL seasons, including 2014, when he started 11 games for the Tennessee Titans. Oher finished his career with two years in Carolina.

He released a new memoir about his life last month, titled When Your Back’s Against the Wall: Fame, Football, and Lessons Learned through a Lifetime of Adversity.
