  • Toyota pledges to invest $10 billion in its U.S. operations

Toyota on Wednesday said it plans to invest up to $10 billion in its U.S. manufacturing operations over the next five years.

Earlier this year, the Japanese automaker also pledged to invest $14 billion in an electric vehicle battery plant in Liberty, North Carolina, which the company said will create up to 5,100 new jobs. Production at the plant, Toyota’s only such facility outside of Japan, began on Wednesday, the company said.

“Today’s launch of Toyota’s first U.S. battery plant and additional U.S. investment up to $10 billion marks a pivotal moment in our company’s history,” Ted Ogawa, CEO of Toyota Motor North America, said in a statement. “Toyota is a pioneer in electrified vehicles, and the company’s significant manufacturing investment in the U.S. and North Carolina further solidifies our commitment to team members, customers, dealers, communities and suppliers.”

The North Carolina plant will assemble batteries to power the Toyota Camry HEV, Corolla Cross HEV, RAV4 HEV, and an additional, yet-to-be-announced electric car model. Toyota also said the hub will provide on-site childcare, a pharmacy, medical clinic and fitness center for workers.

Toyota, which started making cars in the U.S. in the 1970s, has invested a total of roughly $60 billion in its American factories, according to the company.

Transportation Department Secretary Sean Duffy on Wednesday praised Toyota for moving to expand its footprint in the U.S.

“Toyota’s move to expand production in North Carolina is the latest show of confidence in this administration’s efforts to reshore manufacturing, generate new, great-paying jobs and inject billions of dollars into the economy,” Duffy said in a statement.

Toyota’s announcement comes after Mr. Trump said while on a trip to Japan that the automaker would invest $10 billion in the U.S.

The Trump administration has emphasized the importance of bolstering the country’s domestic manufacturing sector, in part by imposing tariffs on U.S. trade partners and on certain industrial sectors, including automobiles

  • Toyota’s Hybrid-First EV Strategy Pays Off Even as Tariffs Bite Into Profit

Toyota has long been criticized for its cautious embrace of electric vehicles. But amid slowing demand, tariffs and the phase-out of tax incentives, the world’s largest automaker’s deliberate approach looks increasingly like a smart hedge.

The Japanese automaker reported yesterday (Nov. 5) that it sold 4.78 million vehicles globally between April and September, up 12 percent from the same period last year. That included 2.27 million hybrid electric vehicles, a record high. Still, U.S. tariffs took a toll: operating income fell by $3.3 billion from a year ago to $12.5 billion for the fiscal half-year.

Despite those geopolitical headwinds, demand for Toyota’s reliable passenger cars remains robust. CFO Kenta Kon told investors the company is struggling to keep up with demand, saying it can “barely cover the demand.” According to Kelley Blue Book, dealers typically aim to hold about 60 days of inventory on their lots. Toyota’s U.S. inventory, by contrast, is hovering around 30 days.

Toyota has long been hesitant to fully commit to battery-electric vehicles, but the company is a leader in the hybrid vehicle space, touting its more conservative, balanced approach to electrification as the right path forward. Battery-electric vehicles are only a sliver of Toyota’s global mix (just 1.4 percent of total sales in 2024). The long-term risk, of course, is that markets like Europe and China, which are racing toward a fully electric future, could leave Toyota lagging behind.

The company’s best-selling model, the RAV4, will be offered only as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid beginning in 2026. Retooling factories for the new powertrains will require temporary shutdowns, potentially tightening supply even further. A slimmer dealer inventory could also push up vehicle prices for U.S. consumers in early 2026.

Toyota’s small steps toward software-driven cars

The next-generation RAV4 also marks another turning point: it will be Toyota’s first software-defined vehicle (SDV). While startups like Tesla and Rivian built their cars around software from the start, Toyota’s move represents a major step into that domain. The new RAV4 will feature Arene, a Woven by Toyota software platform enabling over-the-air (OTA) updates—an early signal of Toyota’s digital ambitions and a reminder of how far it still has to go.

In typical Toyota fashion, the rollout is cautious. The 2026 RAV4 will debut features that rivals have offered for years, such as a smartphone-like cockpit interface, conversational voice commands and OTA updates. But those updates will be limited to ADAS systems and cockpit displays, not the deeper vehicle functions that Tesla, Lucid and others regularly tweak via software. The strategy underscores Toyota’s effort to catch up with competitors, especially those in China, which have already made software a core part of their vehicles.

Toyota now finds itself straddling two eras of the auto industry: one built on mechanical excellence and another driven by software, connectivity and climate regulations. Its hybrid-first strategy has cushioned profits as global EV momentum slows and tariffs rise. But the clock is ticking. If Toyota can extend its hybrid playbook into the software-defined, electrified era it’s hinting at with the new RAV4, it may retain its crown. If not, the conservative approach that once protected it could soon become its greatest liability.

  • Toyota recalling more than million vehicles in U.S. due to rear camera flaw

Toyota is recalling more than a million vehicles in the U.S. due to a problem with their rearview cameras that could increase the chances the vehicles could crash, the National Transportation Safety Board says.

The vehicles involved — some 1,024,407 —  are 2022-2026 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Solterras that have Panoramic View Monitor systems, the agency says.

“A software error may cause the rearview camera to freeze or display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse,” the NHTSA points out, adding that, “A rearview camera that fails to display an image can reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Toyota will fix the software issue for free, the agency says. Owners can contact Toyota’s customer service at 1-800-331-4331, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

  • Toyota brings Apple Maps EV routing to its newest models

Toyota battery electric vehicles (BEV) owners can now have Apple Maps help them plan charging stops along their route via CarPlay. Alongside an that the is now on sale, the automaker says all 2023 and newer battery-electric vehicles can now integrate real-time battery information to help drivers with iPhones find compatible chargers. In the US this would simply mean the bZ4X, which is being replaced by the bZ.

Apple Maps will take into account factors like battery performance and elevation changes when estimating battery percentages on arrival and charging times.

CarPlay is Apple’s in-car infotainment system offering maps, music, calendar tools, Siri and more. While it’s currently compatible with car models, EV-charger routing requires access to the car’s battery info, which means automakers must work with Apple to enable the feature.

The integration’s rollout remains pretty limited, and before today’s announcement the only compatible vehicles were the , the F-150 Lightning and the .

Toyota also said the 2026 bZ will have access to the Tesla Supercharger network, opening up more than 25,000 charging locations for the new model. The bZ features the , first created by Tesla before being open-sourced for the entire industry.

  • Woman dead, man rescued by 3 Samaritans after Mille Lacs County crash

Minneapolis mayoral candidates set to debate, and more headlines

    04:09

A 53-year-old woman is dead and a 24-year-old man was rescued by three Samaritans after a crash in Mudgett Township, Minnesota, the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office said on Friday.

The crash happened near the intersection of 280th Street and 100th Avenue around 6:24 a.m. Thursday. Responding deputies found a Toyota Camry in flames and a heavily damaged Lincoln Navigator. The driver of the Camry, identified by officials as Rachael Marie Morey of Rush City, Minnesota, died at the scene.

Deputies saw a person, later identified as Timothy Boros of Little Falls, Minnesota, being carried away from the Navigator by Samaritans. The Lincoln caught fire “moments later,” the sheriff’s office said.

Boros was taken to the hospital.

Investigators later learned that three men saw the crash happen and stopped to help. They used a cut-off saw in an attempt to get inside the Lincoln, and used fire extinguishers from their work vehicles to try and put out the fire, according to the sheriff’s office. The three men eventually broke the driver’s side door of the Lincoln and carried Boros away.

“Their efforts undoubtedly saved Mr. Boros from death or serious injury,” the sheriff’s office said.

A semitruck also involved in the crash sustained minor damage, according to officials. The driver of the truck, one of the three men who helped Boros, was not injured.

The sheriff’s office and the Minnesota State Patrol are investigating.

  • The Trump administration flubbed a detail on its Japan trade deal so it apologized and agreed to refund overcharged tariffs

Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s signing of an order to implement lower tariffs on automobiles and other Japanese imports as a step that addressed uncertainty for key industries.

The reduction to 15% from the previous 25% was agreed between the two sides on July 22.

“Tariff negotiations between Japan and the United States was the top priority for the government and we have put all our effort into achieving an agreement in a best possible way as soon as possible,” Ishiba said Friday. “The way it was achieved … is just excellent.”

The step on tariffs comes as the Japanese prime minister faces pressure from right-wing rivals within his party to resign over its July election loss.

In Washington, Japan’s top tariff negotiator Ryosei Akazawa and his U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also signed a joint statement, confirming a $550 billion Japanese investment in U.S. projects.

Akazawa said Trump’s order brings down tariffs on automobiles and auto parts to 15% and that there will be no stacking on the existing rate, and so-called reciprocal tariffs on most other goods are also set at the same rate without stacking. He said aircraft and aircraft parts will be excluded from reciprocal tariffs.

The two allies agreed on the deal in July but Japanese officials discovered days later the preliminary deal had added 15% on existing rates and objected. Washington acknowledged the mistake and agreed to fix and to refund any excess import duties paid.

Akazawa said he expected the order to take effect within two weeks.

Ishiba said Akazawa carried the prime minister’s letter to Trump, stating his wish to build “a golden era of Japan-U.S. relations” together, and inviting the president to visit Japan.

He welcomed the deal as a result of his consistent push for investment instead of tariffs and stressed that “it is important to implement the agreement faithfully and promptly.”

  • Keanu Reeves Speeds Around the Indy 500 Racetrack

Keanu Reeves Speeds Around the Indy 500 Racetrack

Keanu Reeves, the Matthew Perry-maligned actor known for (among other things) his respect for his stunt team, isn’t immune to a bit of daredevilry himself. The John Wick star has felt the need for speed for decades, and we’re not just talking about that 50+ mph bus trip. The custom motorcycle shop owner is also a regular spectator at Formula 1 and MotoGP events, and this weekend he’s taking it to the next level, driving in a set of races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), one of the most famous racetracks in the world.

The event is the final stop in the Toyota Gazoo Racing GR Cup series, which runs from Thursday through Sunday at the home of the Indianapolis 500 (among other races). The set of professional runs along the 2.439-mile, 14-turn course will see scores of drivers, many of whom are well-known within the professional motorsports community. There’s 27-year-old Gresham Wagner, who has already locked in the series’ top slot, or 20-year-old Westin Workman and Spike Kohlbecker (age 21), battling for second place this weekend.

Actor Keanu Reeves attends the 2010 Toyota Pro Celebrity Qualifying Race at the Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 16, 2010 in Long Beach, California.

    Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images

Then there’s Keanu Reeves, who made his GR Cup debut on Saturday at the age of 60—but this isn’t his first time on a competitive race track. The man in the Matrix, also a longtime Vanity Fair photoshoot standby, came in first in his class at the 2009 Long Beach Grand Prix Pro/Celebrity Race. While he’s put pedal to the metal onscreen many times since, Saturday was his first time back behind the wheel in a real-life, pro-level sense since he competed in Long Beach that next year, in 2010

Reeves looked relaxed and happy as he hopped into his spec GR86, a Saturday tweet from the IMS shows. But in the day’s first race, which opened at 9:50, Reeves spun out into the grass, the Associated Press reports.

His vehicle, known as the No. 92 BRZRKR car in a nod to his 2020 comic book, BRZRKR, was unscathed in the non-collision crash. The same was true of its driver, who lost control at the exit of Turn 9, which is near the midpoint of the 45-minute race. After returning to the track, Reeves finished 25th after a race where he ran as high as 21st and avoided at least one crash near Turn 14.

The actor will hit the bricks again on Sunday, but that’s not the only time the actor will be under intense circumstances that week. Reeves is expected to reteam with director Jan de Bont and actor Sandra Bullock on Tuesday for a special 30th-anniversary screening of Speed in Los Angeles, a film in which the young “hot shot” Reeves played was still years older than his competitors on the race track this weekend. Efforts by this correspondent to determine how Reeves manages not to age were unsuccessful as of publication time, but I started to develop a theory based on this conversation Reeves had with Vanity Fair last year.

    Instagram content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

“Keanu, are you online?” the actor was asked. “I’m not, no.” “Not on Twitter?” the interviewer pushed. “No,” he said. Correlation isn’t causation, but Reeves certainly provides some food for thought.

Deputies shoot carjacking suspect through rear window in chaotic confrontation in Pico-Union

Sheriff’s deputies shot a fleeing carjacking suspect after a chase Wednesday afternoon in Pico-Union, according to officials and footage of the scene.

Just before 2:30 p.m., deputies from the East L.A. Station started to pursue a suspect in a gray Toyota Camry, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The chase ended about 20 minutes later at Vermont Avenue and Venice Boulevard, where video showed the Toyota crashing into several cars and a light pole.

The front tires began smoking as the driver apparently tried to accelerate backward into the patrol cruiser that was boxing the suspect in from behind. The driver, still seeming to accelerate, leaned out the window and extended an open hand.

Seconds later, at 2:51 p.m., an unknown number of deputies opened fire, shooting into the rear windshield of the Toyota. Several rounds pierced all the way through the car, leaving five holes in the front windshield along with what appeared to be blood splatter.

After the gunfire ended, deputies using a bulletproof shield approached the vehicle and pulled someone from the passenger side of the vehicle.

Authorities said the suspect was taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

  • Georgetown PD: Local teen stole 2 cars

Georgetown PD: Local teen stole 2 cars

GEORGETOWN — A local teen accused of stealing two cars was arraigned Monday in Haverhill District Court, according to police.

Joseph Winthrop Lee, 18, of Georgetown was charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle (two counts); larceny of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene after property damage, resisting arrest, speeding in excess of posted limit and a marked lanes violation.

Lee was arrested shortly after police say he stole a 2010 Toyota Camry early Sunday and led officers on a pursuit that ended with the car veering into woods off Church Street in West Newbury.

He was later captured by officers with the help of Amesbury police K-9 Meatball and his partner, Thomas Nichols.

The arrest came shortly after local police responded to a suspicious gathering at the Georgetown Park and Ride involving two men and a 2022 Toyota Prius. The officers identified the vehicle as being stolen from a Newton address.

When approached by officers, the men fled. Lee then stole the Camry, police said.

The second car theft took place in the early morning of May 31 when a 2008 Toyota Prius was stolen from a Georgetown home. Several hours later, the Prius was found abandoned with a flat tire outside the Museum of Science in Boston, according to police.

Local police charged Lee with both thefts.

Lee is due back in court July 10.

In light of the two incidents, police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles.

“Practicing responsible vehicle ownership isn’t just about protecting your property, it’s also about protecting the lives and property of other people,” Georgetown police Chief David Sedgwick said. “Motor vehicle theft is often a gateway crime to other crime, such as speeding and reckless driving, both of which pose a threat to the entire community. On this occasion, the motor vehicles were stolen as a matter of convenience, and their theft could have been prevented.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers the following commonsense tips for helping to prevent vehicle theft:

Take your vehicle’s key and do not leave it in or on your vehicle; close and lock all windows and doors when parking; park in well-lit areas if possible; and never leave valuables in the vehicle, especially if they can be seen from outside.

  • Toyota recalling 100,000 big trucks and luxury SUVs due to engines stalling

Toyota recalling 100,000 big trucks and luxury SUVs due to engines stalling

Toyota is recalling nearly 100,000 Tundra pickups and about 3,500 Lexus LX 600 luxury SUVs to fix a problem that could cause their engines to lose power while driving.

In some of these vehicles, debris from the manufacturing process may have been left inside the engine which can lead to knocking, rough running and, in some cases, the engine stalling altogether while driving.

The vehicles involved are 2022 and 2023 model year Tundras and LX 600s. Only regular gasoline-powered versions, not hybrids, are involved in this recall, according to Toyota. (The Tundra is available in both gas-only and “iForce Max” hybrid versions.)

Toyota has not yet determined a fix. Owners of the potentially affected vehicles will be sent a letter by the end of July telling them that Toyota is working to figure out a solution.

Once a repair has been determined, owners will be instructed to take the vehicle to a Toyota dealer for free repairs.

When Toyota’s Avalon was introduced as the carmaker’s largest new sedan back in 2004, it was revered for its luxury, size, and value. After personal experience due to my family owning one, it lasted a memorable 230,000 miles with virtually no issues. After almost two decades, this model was discontinued largely due to the popularity of SUVs, but a Toyota sedan comparable to the Avalon called the Crown has arrived in 2023 with an impressive debut. Owners will appreciate its attractive exterior, amenities, a smooth ride, higher seating platform, and stellar fuel economy thanks to the hybrid powertrain. The Crown comes in three trims—XLE, the reviewed Limited, and high-end Platinum.

Presented in a prominent “Supersonic Red” premium paint, it complements the sedan’s other sporty physical elements, including the contrasting black grille; large, 21-inch, 10-spoked alloy wheels coming in two tones (19-inch is standard); “quad” LED daytime running lights package; rear LED lights extending fully across the rear; and panoramic roof. Overall, Toyota has made a head turner in the sedan market, for sure.

The XLE and Limited come with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine teaming with three electric motors and a continuously variable automatic transmission. Although the performance won’t have drivers white knuckling topping out at 236 horsepower, the gas stations will see less visits with a combined 41 miles to the gallon. (For more power, the Platinum boasts a Hybrid Max system, including a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder heart, pushing out 340 horses, which will hopefully be featured in Street Lines soon.)
