  • Reboot It All You Want, the Spider-Man Universe Is Doomed to Fail

    [ad_1]

No matter who is writing or drawing his adventures, there are a few immutable facts of Spider-Man. He always embodies the lines that closed his very first appearance by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in Amazing Fantasy #15, that with great power must come great responsibility. And regardless of how often he screws up in his pursuit of that motto, Spider-Man will always try to get things right. He makes tons of mistakes — making a mess of things may as well be his true super power — but he never stops trying to fix them either.

So in a way, the news that Sony is now looking to relaunch its Spider-Man universe following the failures of movies like MorbiusMadame Web, and Kraven the Hunter is very much in keeping with that universe’s animating spirit. That was my first thought when I heard, from Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman on The Town podcast, that Sony’s broader Spider-Man universe was not dead. Rothman instead claimed that Sony would return to it eventually with a “fresh reboot [with] new people.”

Why not try again? After all, that’s what Peter Parker would do!

READ MORE: The Spider-Noir Series Will Be Available in Color and Black and White

To their credit, Sony has been making Spider-Man movies for 25 years now (a staggering number for those of us Olds who remember when there were zero Spider-Man movies) and over that time they’ve produced some of the century’s very best superhero films. They had the good sense to give Sam Raimi control of the series back in the early 2000s, and he delivered two era-defining blockbusters. Then they were canny enough to collaborate with Kevin Feige and Marvel on a new franchise, and all of the films they made together with Tom Holland as Peter Parker have been extremely entertaining.

So you can’t say that Sony does not understand Spider-Man — or at the very least they’ve hired people who understand him and gave them enough creative freedom to use that understanding properly. Unfortunately, no matter what Sony does from here on out — no matter who Sony hires — any Spider-Man universe reboot is doomed to fail.

That’s because the deal that first brought Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe starting with 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, and then continuing through two Avengers movies and four solo Spider-Man films, limits what the character can do in films Sony makes without Marvel and Feige’s direct involvement.

While the specific terms of the arrangement between Marvel and Sony have never been disclosed, it’s obvious that Holland is largely restricted to appearances within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (where his Spider-Man movies are set) and not in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, where all of the company’s other superhero titles take place. Through six such SSU movies, Holland made only one blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo. That was in 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage — during a scene where Venom is briefly transported to the MCU.

Surely Sony would have stuck Holland in one of these “Spider-Man movies” somewhere if they were allowed to under the terms of their Marvel agreement. Instead, Holland will next appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, coming to theaters this summer. Marvel and Sony brought back most of the same producers, writers, and stars from the previous Holland Spideys for this project, and I’m pretty optimistic it will be as satisfying as the earlier trilogy.

That’s not the problem. The problem is that even though Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a Sony Spider-Man movie, it’s not technically in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. It’s in the MCU.

In the years since Spider-Man shifted over to the MCU, Sony has produced six Spider-Man movies without Spider-Man in them, a concept that sounds like a joke from The Studio — except even Matt Remick wouldn’t make a Kool-Aid Man movie without the Kool-Aid Man in it. Sony’s done that six times!

Even under the best of circumstances, an entire universe dedicated to just the Spider-Man corner of Marvel Comics would be a tough assignment. The rights to adapt Spider-Man comics gives Sony a huge library of characters to exploit — almost all of them conceived to work in counterpoint to Spider-Man himself; to expose different aspects of his personality, or to challenge him in specific ways. By and large, they were never designed to exist on their own. Remove Spider-Man from the equation and you’ve removed most of what makes them interesting.

That’s how you wind up with a film as lifeless and pointless Morbius (a scientist turned vampire, who was conceived as a dark echo of Spider-Man’s own origin) or a thriller about Madame Web, an elderly blind woman who spent most of her early comic appearances confined to an elaborate throne — not exactly the ideal central figure for an action movie.

Madame Web has never even starred in a monthly Marvel comic book. But she got a movie because Sony held her rights because she debuted in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man comic. Compare that to Marvel’s movie universe, where Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Ant-Man were all individual heroes with solo series before Stan Lee and Jack Kirby bundled them together as a team. They could stand on their own before they stood as a group — which is why almost all of them have worked as anchors of solo movies as well in addition to The Avengers sequels.

As long as Marvel and Sony’s current deal remains in place, with Tom Holland firmly stuck in the MCU, a separate Spider-Man universe is a lost cause. The only way it could work is if Sony put another Spider-Man into it who was exclusively under their control — something that I’m not even sure they are allowed to do under their agreement with Marvel. And even if they technically could create a second movie Spidey, I doubt they would, because multiple simultaneous live-action Spider-Man franchises would create confusion in the marketplace, might hurt the box-office prospects of both series.

If Sony is going to let Marvel produce their Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland for the foreseeable future, then their best bet is to double down on the good Spidey films they were already making: The animated Spider-Verse franchise. Into and Across the Spider-Verse are the opposite of Sony’s live-action Spider-Man universe in almost every single way. They are gorgeous and funny and deeply true to the spirit of Spider-Man as a character.

Best of all, they are filled with a comical amount of Spider-Men and Women: Peter Parker, obviously, but also Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, a noir Spider-Man, a future Spider-Man, a robotic Spider-Man, a cartoon ham Spider-Man, a Spider-Man that’s a horse, and so on. Instead of trying to milk any tiny amount of creative juice these minor Marvel characters might possess, the Spider-Verses crammed every interesting version of the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler into a single story — and the results speak for themselves.

  • Is Kang Coming Back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

    [ad_1]

We know that Avengers: Doomsday is going to feature Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. It’s kind of right there in the title. You wouldn’t call the movie Doomsday and then have Earth’s Mightiest Heroes square off with Paste-Pot Pete. And the Doom storyline should continue into Doomsday’s sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars.

But what about after that? What other villains are left to feature in major roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? And is it possible that the next Marvel villain after Doctor Doom … could be Kang?

It’s unlikely, but it’s not impossible. And in our latest Marvel video, we’ll explore the possibility of a Kang return and discuss the other big theories about the future of Marvel villainy. Watch the full ScreenCrush staff discussion below:

  • ‘Spider-Noir’ Will Be Available In Color and Black-and-White Versions – And So Is the Show’s First Trailer

    [ad_1]

It’s only appropriate to watch a noir Spider-Man in black and white. But the new Spider-Noir TV series coming to Amazon’s Prime Video — starring Nicolas Cage as the title character — will be available in two different formats. Fans can watch it in either “Authentic Black & White” or in “True-Hue Full Color.”

Fittingly, there are two different trailers for the show; one in black and white and one in color. First, here is the black and white version, introducing the live-action version of Spider-Man Noir, who Cage previously voiced in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

READ MORE: Every Spider-Man Movie and Spinoff, Ranked From Worst to Best

And here is the color version of the same trailer. (Black and white just looks better, in my opinion)…

The Spider-Man Noir character was created by writers David Hine and Fabrice Sapolsky and artist Carime Di Giandomenico, with a costume designed by Marko Djurdjević. He was just one of several “Noir” versions of classic Marvel characters that the company published in the late 2000s and early 2010s. (There was also X-Men NoirDaredevil Noir, and Iron Man Noir, among others.) He got a major boost in profile from his inclusion in Into the Spider-Verse, with a wry vocal performance by Cage. (Interestingly, Noir is a bit of a comic relief figure in Spider-Verse, but the TV show looks darker and more overtly noirish.)

The Spider-Noir TV series is produced and co-showrun by Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot. They also developed the series, working with the Spider-Verse producing team of Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal.

Noir is now Cage’s second live-action Marvel superhero; he previously played Ghost Rider in two movies that were released in 2007 and 2011. In a million years, I would never have predicted we get a Spider-Man Noir TV series before we got a new live-action Spider-Man series. Granted, I would never have predicted a Spider-Noir TV series period.

Here is the series’ official synopsis:

Spider-Noir is a live-action series based on the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir. Spider-Noir tells the story of Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), a seasoned, down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life, following a deeply personal tragedy, as the city’s one and only superhero.

Spider-Noir will debut on Amazon’s Prime Video on May 27. It will premiere prior to that on the MGM+ linear broadcast channel on May 25.

  • Jason Momoa’s Lobo Debuts in New ‘Supergirl’ Trailer

    [ad_1]

Aquaman is now the Main Man.

After headlining two solo Aquaman movies, and appearances in Batman v Superman and Justice League, Jason Momoa has managed to jump DC Universes to the new one being overseen by Superman director James Gunn. Momoa will play Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl movie and today Gunn shared the first good look at Momoa in costume as the character.

There’s a little more of Momoa in action as Lobo in this new 30 second teaser as well.

READ MORE: The Worst Performances Ever in DC Movies

Lobo — who’s nickname is “The Main Man” — was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen in the pages of a comic called Omega Men in the early 1980s. A ruthless alien bounty hunter, he gradually accumulated a loyal fanbase thanks his outlandish outer space adventures and his snarky attitude.

He was kind of like Deadpool before Deadpool. And he grew so popular by the middle of the 1990s that when DC and Marvel did their first major crossover miniseries in 1996, DC vs. Marvel, and the two companies squared off all their biggest heroes in fights, Lobo got the honor of fighting Wolverine. (He lost, in a fight determined by fan voting, but still.)

The character has appeared in various cartoons before, but he’s never been portrayed in live-action before. DC has discussed the possibility of a Lobo movie for well over a decade, with filmmakers like Guy Ritchie and Michael Bay involved at various points. One presumes that if Momoa’s performance in Supergirl is well-received, it could reignite those discussions again.

    Here is Supergirl’s official synopsis:

“Supergirl,” DC Studios’ newest feature film to hit the big screen, will be in theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures, starring Milly Alcock in the dual role of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El.  Craig Gillespie directs the film from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira.

Supergirl is scheduled to open in theaters on June 26.

  • Best Superhero Movies on Netflix (January 2026)

    [ad_1]

There was a time when most blockbuster movies and popular television series found their way onto Netflix. Yet as the market for streaming grew, the amount of superhero movies on the service decreased. However, Netflix still hosts some of the best superhero movies ever made.

What are the best Superhero movies on Netflix as of January 2026?

Today, Netflix is more frequently associated with superhero streaming series than movies. They produced a number of mature series based on the world of Marvel Comics, like Daredevil. They also stream most of the Arrowverse shows based on DC Comics, thanks to a long-running licensing deal with The CW. Despite that, and most of these properties slowly making their way to Disney+ and HBO Max, there are still some fine superhero movies to be found on Netflix.

    Hellboy (2004)

In 1944, a group of Nazi sorcerers led by the infamous Rasputin tried to summon several demons into their service. Thanks to the efforts of an Allied strike force and scholar Trevor “Broom” Bruttenholm, they failed. However, an infant demon was discovered in the aftermath. Broom adopted this Hellboy as his own son, and trained him to become a force for good.

Six decades later, Broom and Hellboy are employed by the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. With their aid, the BPRD have become humanity’s first line of defense against various monsters and magicians. Unfortunately, Rasputin’s allies have resurrected him, and they are determined to finish what they have started.

There have been four films to date based upon Dark Horse Comics‘ superhero Hellboy and two cinematic reboots. Despite this, many feel that the first effort remains the best. This is largely due to the efforts of Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who scripted and directed the film. It is also thanks to Ron Perlman‘s masterful performance as the noble demon. It is also notable as the only Hellboy film adaptation to date to merit a sequel.

    The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

Peter Parker is a brilliant but socially awkward teenager with dreams of becoming a scientist. This leads him to seek out a former colleague of his father, Dr. Curt Connors, who is studying cross-species genetics. A lab accident leads to Peter being bitten by a genetically-altered spider and becoming something new… The Amazing Spider-Man.

When Connors is similarly transformed into a monstrous lizard man, Spider-Man must step up to save the city. This is made more difficult thanks to the efforts of NYPD Captain George Stacy, who thinks Spider-Man is more menace than superhero. This, in turn, endangers Peter’s romance with classmate Gwen Stacy, who just happens to be Captain Stacy’s daughter.

Marc Webb faced a serious challenge following after Sam Raimi in developing a new Spider-Man film franchise. It is debatable how well he succeeded. However, The Amazing Spider-Man does have a devout fandom for several reasons.

Many fans prefer Andrew Garfield‘s more wise-cracking take on Peter Parker than the more brooding variant played by Tobey Maguire. Another selling point for the movie is Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and her chemistry with Andrew Garfield. Such is her popularity that many hope she may still find her way into the MCU as Spider-Gwen.

    Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Miles Morales was a smart student, struggling to fit in and live up to the standards of his NYPD officer father. Chance leads to his being bitten by a radioactive spider and gaining powers similar to those of the city’s greatest hero, Spider-Man. It also leads to Miles being entrusted with the only way to stop New York’s worst crime-boss from traveling between dimensions and wrecking reality after Spider-Man dies.

In over his head and untrained in his new powers, Miles doesn’t think it is in him to be a hero. Fate intervenes again, giving him an unlikely teacher in the form of another Peter Parker from another world. Unfortunately, this Spider-Man is not the superhero he once was. However, with more and more Spiders showing up, Peter will have to remember what comes with great power. And Miles will learn that anyone can wear the mask.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a revelation upon its release. Beyond being a blockbuster success, it was a critical smash. Even those critics who normally turn up their noses at superhero movies praised the film for its innovative concept and revolutionary animation. It ultimately earned 52 industry awards, including the Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Best Animated Feature Film.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

There have been many incarnations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Despite this, their story did not differ much from film to film, or cartoon to cartoon. That changed with the 2023 animated superhero movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

The film opens with the standard origin of four baby turtles and a rat being mutated into humanoid creatures by mutagenic ooze. However, this group of turtle boys hide themselves from the world because of their foster father Splinter’s fear of humanity. Not because of some need to maintain a superhero secret identity. Despite this, his sons long to be a part of the world above their home in the sewer.

The existence of the Ninja Turtles is uncovered by aspiring teen journalist April O’Neil, after they recover her stolen moped. This leads to a partnership, as the TMNT help April investigate a series of crimes tied to the sinister TCRI. It also leads to the discovery of another found family of mutants, pressured into a life of crime by their charismatic leader, Superfly.

Mutant Mayhem was notable for being one of the few times the Ninja Turtles actually seemed to act like real teenagers. It was also marked by a unique visual aesthetic, and for how well it merged ideas taken from a wide scope of earlier adaptations. The end result was a reboot that won over a new generation of fans while satisfying the old guard.

    KPop Demon Hunters (2025)

Long ago, demons preyed on humanity. Hither came three young women, warrior poets who mixed song and sorcery to fight the demons. They created the Honmoon; a mystic barrier that limited the power of demons on Earth. Through the centuries that followed, three women in a generation would be chosen as the new guardians of the Honmoon. Today, those guardians are Huntrix – a K-pop idol group consisting of rebellious Mira, innocent Zoey, and confident Rumi.

Huntrix are challenged in popularity by a demon-backed idol group called the Saja Boys. This leads to a battle of the bands for the souls of the world. However, Rumi has a secret; a half-demon heritage that threatens to break up the band and her friendships with Zoey and Mira.

Some may question the inclusion of KPop Demon Hunters on a list of superhero movies. Certainly it is more heavily influenced by Korean culture and mythology than traditional comic book heroics. Yet at its core, the movie is a magical girl story, with summoned weapons, colorful costumes, and secret identities. That makes it a superhero movie by most metrics, in terms of story if nothing else.

How we picked the best Superhero Movies on Netflix in 2026

As noted earlier, there is little in the way of superhero movies on Netflix in 2026. However, there were still enough titles to make narrowing the list down to a top-five difficult. To that end, these movies were assessed based upon their influence, awards won, and success in establishing an on-going franchise.

  • Robert Downey Jr. and Timothée Chalamet Want the Day ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Dune 3’ Both Open in Theaters to Be Known as ‘Dunesday’

    [ad_1]

These days it can sometimes feel like movie theaters go weeks and weeks between major releases. But arguably the two biggest movies of 2026 — Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three — both open on the same day this year, December 18.

Movie theaters are sure to be thrilled (and packed). There hasn’t been that kind of a day in multiplexes since July 21, 2023, the day that both Oppenheimer and Barbie both opened in theaters. Movie lovers dubbed the dual releases “Barbenheimer.” The hype around the competition helped make both movies massive hits.

Marvel star Robert Downey Jr. was in Oppenheimer so he is surely aware of that. Which might explain why he and Dune star just offered up their own suggestion for a “Barbenheimer”-style nickname for December 18: “Dunesday.”

You can watch the stars offer the suggestion at a Marty Supreme screening in the video below:

READ MORE: Every Marvel Cinematic Universe Movie, Ranked From Worst to Best

    I gotta say … it’s a pretty catchy name.

Doomsday is the first Avengers movie since 2019, and Downey’s first return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe since then as well. Dune: Part Three is director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the first Dune sequel novel, Dune Messiah, and it will supposedly conclude his trilogy of films based on the popular sci-fi books.

Both movies should be huge hits. But unlike Oppenheimer and Barbie, which presumably appealed to very different audiences, Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday would seemly target the same core group — namely huge, titanically obsessive nerds, dorks, and geeks.

Will the excitement around both lift up both movies’ fortunes? I guess we‘ll see. The fact that the competing stars are now hyping the films collectively with a nickname suggests Marvel and Warner Bros. do not plan on shifting either film’s release off that key date.

Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part 3 both open in theaters on December 18. On Dunesday? Are we doing this?

  • Marvel Launches Countdown Clock to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Premiere

    [ad_1]

Remember when Marvel spent an entire afternoon, hour after hour, slowly revealing a room full of director’s chairs? That’s nothing! Now they’re got a YouTube video counting down the 11+ months until Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters.

Earlier today, Marvel launched a YouTube stream simply titled “DOOMSDAY CLOCK.” It features the same Avengers logo, the phrase “DOOMSDAY IS COMING” and the countdown graphic that’s been attached to each of the four weekly Doomsday teasers that have played in theaters in front of Avatar: Fire and Ash.

I’ve embedded the stream below, just in case you want to stare at this thing tick down the hours minutes and seconds until Doomsday premieres next winter. (As I write this, over 4100 people are doing exactly that, so you wouldn’t be alone.)

At the same time, Marvel and the Russo brothers’ company released the HD version of the fourth Doomsday teaser, featuring the returns of Black Panther, M’Baki, Namor, and the Fantastic Four’s Ben Grimm.

The debut of this stream raises some questions. Is Marvel literally going to keep this thing live and counting down for the next 11 months? Will it occasionally change? Will it include other previews or clips from the movie? At this point, it’s just a ticking clock.

Avengers: Doomsday is the first Avengers sequel since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, and the return of its directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, to Marvel. The cast includes pretty much every single person who has appeared in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to date, including Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, and Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

    Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to open in theaters on December 18, 2026. That’s 11 months, 4 days, 14 hours, 9 minutes, and 27 seconds from now. 26 …. 25 … 24 … 23 …

  • The Official X-Men ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Teaser Debuts Online

    [ad_1]

At this point, we’ve got the pattern. Each week, a new Avengers: Doomsday teaser has debuted in theaters in front of Avatar: Fire and Ash. For a couple of days, you can only see it in the theater (or on social media in extremely grainy bootleg copies). Then it comes to the internet in full HD. Wash rinse repeat.

The first teaser revealed that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers would be back in Avengers: Doomsday, despite his supposed retirement in Avengers: Endgame. The second featured Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, who we already knew was one of the main Avengers returning for this fifth Avengers movie.

The third teaser is the most intriguing so far, as it features the returns of Fox X-Men stars Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and James Marsden as Cyclops — who is seen wearing the character’s classic ’90s Jim Lee-designed costume for the very first time.

You can watch the full teaser below:

In case you missed them, here are the two previous Avengers: Doomsday teasers.

Although not shown in the first teaser, the returning X-Men cast for Doomsday also includes Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique, and Channing Tatum’s Gambit from Deadpool & Wolverine.

Additional confirmed stars beyond Evans, Hemsworth, and the cast of the X-Men franchise include Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, the combined casts of Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Robert Downey Jr. as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Doctor Doom. Based on the size of the list alone, I have to assume this film is 14 hours long.

  • James Gunn’s Unique Take on Supergirl Compared to Guardians

    [ad_1]

Supergirl is similar to Guardians of the Galaxy because it does not “religiously” follow its source material, DC head James Gunn says.

The upcoming DC Universe blockbuster will be loosely based on author Tom King’s 2022 comic run Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Gunn has now explained the movie will be like his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, as Supergirl will retain the “core” of King’s original story, while also venturing into new territory.

Speaking on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast, the 59-year-old filmmaker said: “I think it’s a space fantasy, which is like Guardians in a way, but it’s based on the Tom King book, but it doesn’t follow it religiously, but it has a lot of the core of that there.”

He added: “We’re not adapting Woman of Tomorrow religiously. We’re taking elements of it […] The tone and the general approach and the structure are inspired by it, but we are not telling that story.”

The Superman director noted he was “really excited” for people to see Supergirl and Milly Alcock as the titular Kryptonian heroine.

He added: “It’s going to be awesome”.

The first trailer for Supergirl introduced a bruised, world-weary Kara Zor-El (Alcock) as she drifts through space, haunted by Krypton’s fall and numbing her pain on her 23rd birthday. When she crosses paths with the vengeful Ruthye (Eve Ridley), flashes of lost worlds, brutal fights, and a tease of Lobo (Jason Momoa) set up a cosmic revenge story that promises a harder, sharper edge to the DCU.

The upcoming movie, which lands in cinemas in June 2026, also stars Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Emily Beecham as Alura and David Krumholtz as Zor-El.

The official synopsis for Supergirl reads: “When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”

Supergirl director Craig Gillespie previously teased the film was “really an anti-hero story.”

Speaking with media after debuting the first trailer for Supergirl, Gillespie said: “This is really an anti-hero story.

“She’s got a lot of demons, a lot of baggage coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life.”

Gunn added Supergirl was not perfect “at all.”

The Peacemaker creator said: “So many times female superheroes are so perfect. She’s not that at all … Like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while.”

  • Ryan Coogler Reveals Cancelled ‘Black Panther’ Plans

    [ad_1]

Ryan Coogler wanted Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter to feature in Black Panther.

The 39-year-old director revealed that when Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger and Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaue were confirmed to be the antagonists of his 2018 Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, Coogler had also pitched the Spider-Man villain to be the big bad for Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa to face off with.

However, Coogler explained he had to drop Kraven the Hunter after Sony Pictures — who owns the movie rights to Spider-Man and his villains — rejected his pitch, as the studio had plans to produce their own spinoff flick about the character.

During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Coogler said: “When I took that job, Joe Robert Cole, who’s my co-writer on both the Panthers, [he] had been working with Marvel and they had a line, so when I showed up, it was like, ‘Hey, we have our villains. Our villains are Klaue and Erik Killmonger.’ That had been decided upon.

“The outline of villains was Klaw and Kilmonger, but they weren’t sure. They weren’t sure. Klaw felt slightly modular to them, and obviously, it was the great Andy Serkis, so I’m hyped to work with him … I’m a big Spider-Man fan, especially Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Kraven is in that. He’s also great in the books.

“I was like, ‘Yo, can I have Kraven in the movie?’ They were like, ‘We don’t think so, but let us check.’ So, they hit Sony, and Sony was like, ‘Absolutely not.’ They came back to me like, ‘Yo, we can’t do it.’ So, I was like, ‘Okay.’”

Black Panther follows T’Challa (Boseman) as he returns home to Wakanda to claim the throne after his father’s death and step into his role as king.

When a powerful outsider (Jordan) challenges his rule, T’Challa must confront his nation’s past and decide what kind of leader – and hero – he will become.

Following the 2022 sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — which saw Letitia Wright’s Shuri take on the mantle from T’Challa after Boseman passed away from colon cancer in 2020 — Coogler confirmed he was working on the third instalment.

Speaking during the Sinners panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles, he teased: “If it was anybody but you, I would say, ‘I can neither confirm or deny.’ But we’re working on it hard. So it’s next. Yes, it’s the next movie.”

Coogler also confirmed he was writing a role for Denzel Washington for the third Black Panther film.

Speaking on the 7pm in Brooklyn podcast, the director said: “Denzel is family at this point. I’ve been trying to work with him since day one.

“I think he’s the greatest living actor, and in terms of what he means to our culture, forget about it. I’ve been talking to him about this for a long time.”

  • The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ X-Men Teaser Reveals Dr. Doom’s Plan

    [ad_1]

The following post contains spoilers for the third Avengers: Doomsday trailer. Can you spoil a trailer? Debatable. But we’re warning you anyway.

The first Avengers: Doomsday teaser reintroduced Steve Rogers. The second focused on Thor and his daughter, Love. The third … is all about the X-Men.

While it mostly features Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto, the part that really has our attention is the stuff with Cyclops, played by James Marsden, and finally wearing his classic Jim Lee X-Men costume in live-action for the very first time. The trailer shows Cyclops screaming in rage, unleashing a massive optic blast, surrounded by the ruins of the X-Mansion. Look closely and you’ll even see the legs of a massive Sentinel robot.

There’s only one thing that could get this character this mad — and it basically confirms everything we suspect about the plot of Avengers: Doomsday. Our latest Marvel breakdown video goes through the X-Men Doomsday teaser, and explains how it reveals Doctor Doom’s master plan and connects the entire Marvel multiverse. • Steve Rogers Returns in the First ‘Avengers Doomsday’ Trailer

    [ad_1]

At this point Avengers: Doomsday is now a full-fledged Marvel Cinematic Universe reunion. It stars and is directed by people who all claimed they were done (done!) with Marvel after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

Not so much. First Marvel coaxed back Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Endgame (and Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War) to direct Doomsday, after the project was retooled following Jonathan Majors’ firing. (It turns out Kang’s dynasty wasn’t all that dynastic.) Then they got Robert Downey Jr. to come back and play Doctor Doom, even though Downey’s Iron Man heroically sacrificed himself to save half of the universe in Endgame.

Now the first teaser for Doomsday, which opens in theaters about a year from today, confirms that Chris Evans, whose Captain America supposedly retired from superhero stuff at the end of Endgame, will appear in the film as well. Following its debut in theaters ahead of Avatar: Fire and Ash, you can now watch this clip below in a non-crappy bootleg version:

READ MORE: Every Marvel Cinematic Universe Movie, Ranked From Worst to Best

So clearly Avengers: Doomsday is. folksy domestic drama about former superhero Steve Rogers taking care of his cherubic newborn baby. Sounds great, to be honest. (I presume everyone sees the wedding ring on Steve’s finger in the YouTube thumbnail, right?)

In addition to Downey and Evans, the film will also feature Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie (as the new Captain America who took over for Steve Rogers after he “retired”), Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Channing Tatum, Tom Hiddleston, the combined casts of Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and many more. Based on the size of the cast list alone, I have to assume this film is 14 hours long.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18, 2026.

  • First ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Teaser Confirms Return of a Huge Marvel Star

    [ad_1]

The following post contains spoilers for the trailer of Avengers: Doomsday. By extension, I guess, it contains spoilers for Avengers: Doomsday. That’s where we’re at these days.

Avengers: Endgame apparently wasn’t the end for Steve Rogers after alll…

The first teaser for Avengers: Doomsday is now playing in theaters in front of Avatar: Fire and Ash. (As of yet, it hasn’t been posted online.) And the minute-long clip is all about an actor who didn’t even appear in that endless array of director’s chairs that Marvel spent an entire day hyping a couple of months ago: Chris Evans, who played the original Captain America, Steve Rogers, from 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger to 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

Endgame was supposed to start Evans’ “retirement” from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But the Doomsday trailer shows Evans, his old Captain America costume, a baby (?!?), and the phrase “Steve Rogers Will Return in Avengers: Doomsday.” So there you go.

The teaser also includes a countdown to the film’s release similar to the official one posted by the Russo brothers on their Instagram account. It’s counting down the 12 months until Doomsday’s release next holiday season.

READ MORE: 20 Actors You Forgot Were in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The confirmation that Evans will appear in Doomsday means that the film marks the return of both Marvel stars who supposedly called it quits with Endgame. The film was also supposed to mark the farewell for Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man; Downey’s casting as the MCU’s Doctor Doom was revealed back at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

In addition to Downey and Evans, the film will also feature Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Channing Tatum, Tom Hiddleston, the combined casts of Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and many more. Based on the size of the cast list alone, I have to assume this film is 14 hours long.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18, 2026. Our full breakdown of the Doomsday teaser is below.

  • Avengers: Doomsday Teaser Breakdown: Every Easter Egg You Missed

    [ad_1]

The following post contains spoilers for the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer. Can you spoil a trailer? Debatable. But we’re warning you anyway.

The first teaser for Avengers: Doomsday is playing in theaters starting today; you can see it in front of screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash. As of this writing, it’s not available online — but ScreenCrush has seen it and we are here to give you a full breakdown of what this teaser contains and what that means for the film and the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Most importantly: The teaser is all about Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, who “retired” from superheroism at the end of Avengers: Endgame, but is the only Marvel hero onscreen in this Doomsday teaser. (The teaser even ends with the phrase “Steve Rogers Will Return in Avengers: Doomsday.”) It also shows Steve’s Endgame costume, and it also reveals Evans holding a baby — apparently the child of Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter.

Want to know whether Steve has ever had a baby in the comics? Want to know what Marvel animated film starred a child of Captain America? Watch our full Doomsday teaser breakdown below:
