  • This 1999 Magazine About Comic Book Movies Is Like a Portal to an Alternate Dimension

    [ad_1]

There are surely better superhero movies than 2000’s X-Men, but there may not be a more important comic book movie in the history of Hollywood.

Yes, studios had attempted to turn comics into franchises before Fox made X-Men, and Warner Bros. had already had huge success with their Superman and Batman film series. Remember, though, where Superman and Batman were in the late 1990s.

At that point, the Christopher Reeve Superman saga had been defunct for over a decade, and Warners’ first attempt to reboot the Man of Steel flamed out in spectacular fashion when Tim Burton’s Superman Lives died a very premature death. In some ways, that was still a better outcome than what happened to the Batman franchise, which had become a laughingstock by the end of the decade thanks to the absurd Batman & Robin. It was the era of Steel and Spawn and The Shadow. Those who wanted to believe that comic book movies were juvenile junk had plenty of evidence to support their claims.

There had never been a major Marvel film in theaters at that point, and there was plenty of skepticism in the industry that such a thing was even possible. Fox had spent years trying to adapt Marvel’s X-Men comics, but the property’s enormous cast of characters, elaborate super powers, and exaggerated costumes all proved difficult to translate into a single live-action feature. When they finally did it in the summer of 2000, and the film proved to be a major financial hit across multiple demographics, it completely changed how Hollywood producers viewed comics as source material.

Which is why I was so fascinated by the debut issue of Flix!, which I recently acquired from a friend. Flix! was a publication by the staff of Wizard, the leading magazine in the 1990s about the worlds of comics and superheroes. Wizard #99 from November of 1999 came bagged with the first (and, as far as I can tell, only) issue of Flix! Its cover features an image of Wolverine’s claws with the caption “It’s On! X-Men Begins Filming! The Full Scoop Inside! Entire Cast Revealed!”

Only the cast they reveal is not completely accurate — and a lot of the information contained inside is incorrect, either because of bad intel or films that changed drastically during their development. That almost makes Flix! a time capsule from an alternate reality where Jim Caviezel was nearly in X-Men and Arnold Schwarzenegger played Doc Savage, as well as a pretty compelling document of a huge pivot point in the history of mainstream Hollywood. Join me on a look back at a time when the very idea that a major studio might create a Marvel movie was such a big deal that someone made an entire magazine out of it.

A Look Inside Flix!, a Short-Lived Magazine Dedicated to Comic Book Movies From 1999

The comic magazine Wizard tried to expand into comic book movies in the late 1990s with something called Flix!, all about the world of superheroes onscreen. 25 years later, it is a wild time capsule.

  • Darkseid Is Not the Big Bad of the New DC Universe, Says James Gunn

    [ad_1]

Darkseid is not coming to the new DC Universe any time soon.

That’s according to James Gunn himself, who is interviewed on the latest episode of the ScreenCrush Crossover Universe podcast. And the dude would know; he’s the co-CEO of DC Studios after all.

“Using Darkseid as the big bad right now is not necessarily the thing,” Gunn told us. As for why, he explained “For a lot of reasons: Because Zack [Snyder] did it so cool in his way. And because [of] Thanos in Marvel.”

We also grilled James Gunn about the multiverse, the end of Season 2 of Peacemaker, how it will set up the next batch of stories in the DC Universe, what he likes about the Salvation Run comics, and what he is bringing to his version of the story. He also spilled the beans about the upcoming Mr. Miracle TV show — the pilot episode is written and sitting on Gunn’s desk, waiting to be read.

  • The Single Most Important Scene in the Entire MCU

    [ad_1]

The Marvel Cinematic Universe really shouldn’t work. It’s too big and too complicated with too many different moving parts that need to be kept in the air at all times. In order to make it work you need a cinematic juggler as good as Kevin Feige to keep all the pieces where they need to be — and you need very important scenes that, especially in the MCU’s beginning, helped to ground the reality of this heightened world.

In our latest Marvel video, we take a look at one of those scenes — maybe the single most important scene in the 15+ history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It comes from 2012’s The Avengers, and it was the moment that brought everything that the MCU could be together for the very first time. See the scene, and learn why it was so vitally important to everything Marvel has done ever since, below:

  • Deadpool Almost Appeared in the ‘Peacemaker’ Finale

    [ad_1]

Peacemaker Season 2 is a wrap, and it left some pretty sizable changes for the 11th Street Kids and the new DC Universe as a whole. (We won’t spoil them for those who have yet to watch it.) But the season finale would have really blown people’s minds if series creator James Gunn had gone all the way with one of his big deals: A cameo from Marvel hero Deadpool.

All season of Peacemaker has hinged on the title character’s access to a trans-dimensional portal that allows him to visit alternate realities and travel through the multiverse. Speaking to Variety after the finale, Gunn was asked if there were any ideas for alternate universes Peacemaker could visit that he wound up not being able to use, Gunn said “I wanted them to open the door and see Deadpool in a room.”

READ MORE: Every DC Comics Movie, Ranked From Worst to Best

Gunn also revealed he got so far into the process of making the scene a reality that he “talked to Ryan Reynolds about it.”

Ultimately, Gunn said, he “would’ve had to go through some pretty, pretty big hoops to do that” and so it didn’t become a reality — but Reynolds “wanted to do it.”

Deadpool is perhaps the only character in all of Marvel who would make sense in the context of this sort of cameo, as his constant jokes breaking the fourth wall allow him to pretty much violate the rules of continuity and do whatever the heck he (or Ryan Reynolds) wants. Pretty much is the key phrase there though, as Marvel and DC’s lawyers still have some say about what he can or can’t get away with — and it’s hard to imagine the amount of paperwork that would be needed for an actual Marvel/DC crossover onscreen.

The full second season of Peacemaker is now streaming on HBO Max. If you do want to see Deadpool cross over into DC Comics, he recently met Batman in a just-released comic book, with a second one coming next month. And Superman and Spider-Man will meet in a crossover comic in 2026 as well. So Marvel and DC are working together, at least in the publishing world. So maybe Peacemaker will get to hang out with Deadpool at some point…

  • Why DCU’s ‘Supergirl’ Will Be ‘Rougher and Edgier’ Version of Hero

    [ad_1]

Supergirl makes a brief cameo at the end of 2025’s Superman when Clark Kent’s Kryptonian cousin lands back on Earth. It’s a comedic reunion as Kara Zor-El stumbles drunkenly into the Fortress of Solitude to retrieve her rowdy dog, Krypto, before leaving again to go party on planets with red suns, where she can get sufficiently plastered sans metabolic interference.

Unlike her optimistic and goody-two-shoes cousin, the new DC Universe’s take on Supergirl is chaotic, rebellious, potty-mouthed, and playfully vulgar—a tone that, for good reason, will continue when the Woman of Tomorrow headlines her own film next year.

According to Supergirl screenwriter Ana Nogueira, the tonal shift between the bright and cheerful on-screen Supergirls of yesteryear and the DCU’s messy, jaded party girl version played by House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock just makes more sense for the character based on her incredibly traumatic past.

“She watched Krypton completely be destroyed. I was always like, ‘I can’t get my head around the version of the character that is so sunny,’” Nogueira recently told Variety about her thought process regarding Supergirl’s big-screen characterization.

The screenwriter found the perfect inspiration when she read comic book author Tom King’s “rougher and grittier and edgier and funnier” stories about Kara in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow series, which was published between 2021 and 2022. “When I read it, I was like, ‘There she is,’” Nogueira explained.

READ MORE: Superman 2025 Villain Will Return in Man of Tomorrow

Supergirl will mark the Kara Zor-El version of the character’s third live-action theatrical film appearance. Supergirl received her own film, also titled Supergirl, in 1984, but the movie starring Helen Slater was panned by critics and flopped at the box office. Played by Sasha Calle, the superhero also appeared in 2023’s The Flash, which takes place in the DCEU timeline.

Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl is scheduled to fly into theaters on June 26, 2026.

Principal filming for Supergirl wrapped back in May. The film will mark the second feature-length title in James Gunn’s DCU, and continue the franchise’s “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters” story line era.

  • The Surprising MCU History Between Kang and Doctor Doom

Before it was called Avengers: Doomsday, the next Avengers movie was going to be called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. (Hopefully by now you don’t need us to explain the name change. If you do, we’re in trouble.)

But changing The Kang Dynasty into Doomsday is not as simple as swapping one character for another and changing a couple of movie logos. Even if we never see Kang onscreen again, we suspect that Kang and Doctor Doom had some history together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stuff that may have already happened that we just never saw. In fact, some events we did see throughout the MCU might be the direct result of their involvement.

  • Superman and Spider-Man to Meet in New Crossover

    [ad_1]

The two biggest names in comics are meeting for the first time in decades.

DC and Marvel announced today that they are going to print “two brand-new crossover comic books” in the spring of 2026 featuring a crossover between two of their top heroes: Superman and Spider-Man.

The pair of heroes met for the first time in the very first Marvel and DC crossover book, Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man — which was published 50 years ago.

In honor of its 50th anniversary in 2026, DC is reprinting a new Treasury Edition of Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man #1 on January 7, 2026. Then on February 4, they’re releasing DC and Marvel Present: Superman and Spider-Man Treasury Edition #1, which reprints a second Spider-Man and Superman crossover from the same period.

READ MORE: The Weirdest Marvel Comics Ever Made

Marvel and DC collaborated on several crossover comics in the years after that first meeting between Spider-Man and Superman. Then in the ’90s, they published a slew of crossover books (Darkseid and Galactus even had their own crossover!) and the companies eventually produced a joint mini-series where their entire universes met and battled called DC vs. Marvel (or Marvel vs. DC, depending on which company published a specific issue). The result of that fight led to a brief period where Marvel and DC combined their characters into an “Amalgam Universe” populated by the likes of Super Soldier (Captain America + Superman) and Dark Claw (Batman + Wolverine).

But then the crossovers suddenly stopped for years and years. (The companies have not always gotten along, as is the case with bitter business rivals sometimes.) Finally, Marvel and DC resumed producing crossover comics together in 2025, starting with Marvel’s Deadpool/Batman #1, which was released to comic book stores a few weeks ago. DC’s half of that combo, Batman/Deadpool #1, will be published on November 19.

Marvel and DC will announce the creative teams for their respective Spider-Man and Superman books at a later date.

  • James Gunn Just Dropped a Hint About the New Batman

    [ad_1]

So far little is known about Batman in the new DC Universe.

However, James Gunn recently dropped a little hint about what fans might expect from the caped crusader when he eventually makes his debut in the tentatively titled The Brave and the Bold.

Speaking on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast, the DC Studios co-head casually hinted that his vision for Batman is that of a brutal fighter, not necessarily the pulpy detective fans last saw in The Batman.

“I like the detective Batman, but I also really like the fighter Batman, that’s just the brute that’s fighting,” he shared.

Gunn also revealed that the visual aesthetic of the character matters much less to him than the superhero’s tone and story.

“There’s a religious aspect to so much of this stuff that’s very uncomfortable. Should Batman have white eyes? That’s [another] big subject of conversation … and it’s like, ‘Guys, that’s really what matters?’ But those are the things they care about,” Gunn said of fan expectations.

“None of those things are what’s most important to me. What matters is the character, the story, and I think we have a really, really good story now for what’s happening with Batman,” he added.

READ MORE: The Single Most Important Batman Scene Ever

The most recent live-action film adaptation of Batman from 2022’s The Batman, played by Robert Pattinson, is not part of the DC Universe, but rather part of a standalone series.

The Brave and the Bold, which will be the first official Batman film in the new DC Universe, is currently in development from It and The Flash director Andy Muschietti. Gunn, Peter Safran, and Barbara Muschietti will produce.

According to Gunn, the film will follow the story of Batman and his son, Damian Wayne.

“This is based on Grant Morrison’s great comic book run. Damian Wayne is my favorite Robin, he’s a little assassin who Batman tries to get in line and so this is the story of the two of them, and the beginning of sort of the Bat Family in the DCU,” the filmmaker shared in a DC Studios announcement in 2023, according to Polygon.

The movie will be released as part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters era, which also includes upcoming films Supergirl, Clayface, and Man of Tomorrow.

In July, Gunn told GamesRadar that a screenwriter is currently “hammering away” on the script.

Meanwhile, The Batman Part II is scheduled to release in theaters on October 1, 2027

  • ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Casts New Villain

    [ad_1]

A brand new villain has been added into the mix for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Deadline reports Black Lightning star Marvin Jones III has been cast to play Tombstone in the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Tombstone, AKA Lonnie Lincoln, is a New York crime boss and Marvel bad guy with superhuman strength. He often battles Spidey, as well as Daredevil, in Marvel Comics.

The character made his big-screen debut in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but Brand New Day will mark his first live-action appearance on screen.

Jones III will technically reprise the character of Tombstone, as he voiced the animated version of the villain in Into the Spider-Verse.

In that film, Tombstone is one of Kingpin’s personal bodyguards. The character appears at the beginning of the film during Kingpin’s murder of Spider-Man (Peter Parker) at Alchemax, then later during the attack at Aunt May’s house.

It’s also reported that Jones III will voice Tombstone again in the upcoming third Spider-Verse entry, Beyond the Spider-Verse, scheduled for release in June 2027.

Production on Brand New Day in Glasgow, Scotland, has been paused for a little over a week after lead star Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man, suffered an injury on set last Friday (September 10).

The actor was rushed to a local hospital reportedly following a botched stunt, where he was treated for a minor concussion before being released.

Directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to hit theaters on July 31, 2026.

  • ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Halts Filming as Tom Holland Is Hospitalized for Head Injury

    [ad_1]

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has paused production after lead star Tom Holland reportedly sustained a head injury during a stunt gone wrong on set.

Deadline reports the actor, who plays Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the sequel to 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, was briefly hospitalized and treated for a “mild concussion” Friday (September 10).

The film’s set in Glasgow, Scotland, was temporarily shut down amid the actor’s medical treatment, but a source told the outlet that Holland plans to return to filming in just a few days after he takes a short break “out of precaution.”

U.K. tabloid The Sun reports Holland sustained the head injury while filming a stunt which resulted in him falling on set.

It’s also believed a stunt actor sustained an injury and was taken to the hospital as well.

Meanwhile, Holland was back on his feet by Saturday (September 20) when he hosted a Posh Pub Quiz charity event at Christie’s auction house in London alongside his fiancée and Spider-Man co-star Zendaya.

The event was in partnership with Holland’s charity, The Brothers Trust, which he runs with his siblings Sam, Harry, and Paddy.

Production on Brand New Day officially began in early August with location filming in Glasgow and sound stage filming at Pinewood Studios in the U.K.

In March, Holland teased Brand New Day will be a “fresh start” for Peter Parker, as well as for fans of Spider-Man.

“I know we left you with a massive cliffhanger at the end of No Way Home, where Peter Parker sacrificed his identity to save the people that he loves most in the world. So, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a fresh start. It is exactly that. That’s all I can say. The film featured David Corenswet as the new Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Set a few years into the new Man of Steel’s superhero career, Corenswet’s Superman finds himself at the center of a political firestorm after he intercedes in the middle of a brewing war between two countries. At the same time, Luthor attempts to bring Superman down and send him to a secret prison that he built and overseas. Superman also features Superman’s dog Krypto, a disobedient but loyal pooch who Gunn based on his own dog Ozu.

Colorful, bright, and smart, Gunn’s Superman is one of the best interpretations of comics’ original superhero. As I wrote in my review back when the film debuted in theaters.

Krypto’s constant disobedience provides plenty of comic relief, but it’s also another smart facet of Gunn’s conceit for Superman. This guy’s such a normal bloke he can’t even get his dog to listen to him! Again, that might irk fans with a very specific, very narrow vision of Superman as an almighty, infallible savior. Personally, I found myself genuinely invested in the outcome of a comic-book movie for the first time in a long time. This Superman does something more impressive than make the audience believe a man can fly. It makes them care about the man doing the flying.

Superman will start streaming on HBO Max starting on September 19.

  • Superman and Lex Luthor Will Team Up in ‘Man of Tomorrow’

    [ad_1]

Superman will work alongside an unexpected ally in Man of Tomorrow.

According to director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn, the Man of Steel will team up with none other than his longtime nemesis Lex Luthor in order to face off against an even greater enemy.

“It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” Gunn said during a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show when asked about the upcoming sequel to 2025’s Superman.

“It’s more complicated than that but that’s a big part of it. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much,” Gunn added.

Which Villain Will Superman Face in Man of Tomorrow?

While it’s unclear which villain Superman and Luthor will be forced to put their noggins together to defeat, the Kryptonian hero has battled a number of majorly powerful, otherworldly foes in his comics over the years, including Doomsday, Brainiac, General Zod, and Darkseid, to name a few.

Of course, it’s also likely Lex will find plenty of ways to antagonize Superman in spite of their alliance, and we can probably count on the self-serving mogul to do something slimy or secretive to advance his own greedy desires on the down-low. Still, we’ve seen plenty of bad guys turn good or experience character growth in various superhero flicks, so we’ll give Lex a chance to surprise us.

It’s also possible the pair will have some help in their joint effort to save the world, with the Justice Gang likely to appear in the sequel, as well as potentially some characters from HBO Max’s Peacemaker spinoff series, the forthcoming Season 2 finale of which Gunn recently teased will directly set up the events of Man of Tomorrow.

The filmmaker first teased Lex Luthor’s involvement in Man of Tomorrow in a social media post on Sept. 3 when he uploaded a Jim Lee comic book illustration of Lex wearing his infamous Warsuit while standing next to Superman.

In the comics, the obsessed billionaire designs the suit to give himself the same strength and flying abilities as his adversary. Now it seems Lex could don the suit in order to assist Superman in their battle against whatever threat they’ll face in Man of Tomorrow.

During his chat with Howard Stern, Gunn also confirmed he plans to begin shooting the Superman follow-up in April 2026, just a little over a year ahead of the sequel’s scheduled July 9, 2027 theatrical release date.

  • Tom Holland Searches the Internet to See What Fans ‘Want From a Spider-Man Movie’

    [ad_1]

Tom Holland is for the fans when it comes to bringing Spider-Man to the big screen.

The Marvel star says he likes to go online and search for what fans are saying about Spider-Man to determine what they’d like to see in a movie about the web-slingin’ superhero.

“I have been actively sifting through the internet and trying to best understand what it is that the fans want from a Spider-Man movie, and that’s been my driving force in these pitch meetings,” Holland told LADbible in a new interview.

“I think the producers, at times were like, absolutely sick of me, but I think it’s really important, because we make these movies for [the fans],” he added.

To date, Holland has played Peter Parker in three solo Spider-Man movies, as well as two Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Captain America: Civil War.

When asked how much longer he sees himself playing Spidey on screen, the actor was cryptic. “I think with anything, it’s all about what’s in front of you, and right now what’s in front of us is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and focusing on making that movie worthy of the last film,” he said.

“In terms of my future in the character beyond this film, I don’t know the answer to that,” Holland added of his future with the series.

Holland is currently filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the next installment in his Spider-Man film series.

Back in March, Holland teased that the sequel will serve as a “fresh start” for Peter Parker, as well as for fans of Spider-Man.

“I know we left you with a massive cliffhanger at the end of No Way Home, where Peter Parker sacrificed his identity to save the people that he loves most in the world. So, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a fresh start. It is exactly that. That’s all I can say. That’s all I’ve been allowed to say, and I’m well over the hump of giving away spoilers,” he shared at Cinema-Con.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is being directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton. The movie is set to swing into theaters on July 31, 2026.

  • Channing Tatum Reveals Details of Failed ‘Thor’ Audition

    [ad_1]

Channing Tatum once unsuccessfully auditioned to play Thor.

The actor, now 45, told Variety his bid to appear in Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 film Thor ended in disappointment after he struggled to follow direction during the audition – years before he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe by making his debut as Gambit in Deadpool and Wolverine.

Chris Hemsworth, 41, went on to land the Thor role and has continued to portray the God of Thunder in the franchise.

Channing said about his disastrous attempt to get the part: “I didn’t really want to be Thor. But I wanted to audition in front of Kenneth Branagh.”

He added: “After I did one take, (Kenneth) was like, ‘You’re not allowed to move. Put your hands on this chair.’

“And I froze. He nailed my crutch. I spent the next five years really trying to learn stillness.”

Although he missed out on the role of Thor, Channing went on to develop a solo Gambit film at 20th Century Fox, part of the X-Men franchise.

The project was originally set for release in October 2016 but was repeatedly delayed due to script rewrites and other setbacks. In November 2017, Variety reported Lizzy Caplan had joined the cast as the female lead.

The film was later scrapped entirely after Disney acquired Fox.

Speaking to Variety in 2022, Channing admitted he was left deeply disappointed.

He said: “I shut off my Marvel machine. I haven’t been able to see any of the movies. I loved that character. It was just too sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play him.”

That changed with his surprise appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine, released in 2024.

Channing shared a statement on social media after the premiere.

He said: “I thought I had lost Gambit forever. But (Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds) fought for me and Gambit. I will owe him probably forever. Cause I’m not sure how I could ever do something that would be equal to what this has meant to me.

“I love ya buddy… I’m so grateful to be in this movie. It’s a masterpiece in my opinion. And just pure bad ass joy. I was literally screaming in the theater.”

In a full-circle turn, Channing’s Gambit and Chris’ Thor are set to appear together in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on 18 December 2026.

  • ‘Eternals’ Director Reveals Why the Movie Flopped

    [ad_1]

Chloé Zhao is opening up about why she believes Eternals performed poorly and was so “divisive” for fans and critics alike.

Zhao, who directed the 2021 MCU film Eternals, admits having too much at her fingertips allowed production to spiral out of control.

In an interview with Variety, Zhao revealed that unlike her upcoming new historical drama film Hamnet, which had a smaller budget and therefore more limitations to help main focus, Eternals came with too much “money and resources.”

Eternals had, like, an unlimited amount of money and resources. And here we have one street corner that we can afford, to [stand in for] Stratford … Eternals didn’t have a lot of limitations, and that is actually quite dangerous. Because we only have that street corner [in Hamnet], suddenly everything has meaning,” she said.

Another reason Zhao feels the film did poorly was due to its delayed theatrical release date.

Eternals was planned to be released soon after Endgame, and not at a time when everyone is having an existential crisis [at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic]. The film itself is about existential crisis, both for humanity and God. So I think we definitely felt [the divisiveness] was coming,” she explained.

That said, Zhao did expect from the beginning that there might be some push back to her unique vision for Eternals, which merged her more artsy, naturalistic, character-driven approach to filmmaking with Marvel’s big-budget spectacles.

“In this case, we truly stepped out of the box that I think the world put us in, and met in the middle because of our shared interests. And by truly doing that, it made a lot of people uncomfortable on both sides. But there are also people who are more comfortable with the order of their world [being] disturbed. And then they look at our love-child and go, ‘Oh! This touches different sides of me!’ I like that,” she shared.

“I completely understand the divisiveness coming from critics and the fans. Because when you take this to extremes that are seen as opposition — the world I come from and the world of Marvel, that has been divided in a way that’s so unfair and unfortunate — and to merge the way we did, I actually see the reaction as a testament to how much we had merged with each other; how uncomfortable that might make people feel,” Zhao added.

Zhao is best known for her work on independent films. In 2021, she won the Academy Award for Best Director for her 2020 film Nomadland. The film follows a widowed drifter (Frances McDormand) who leaves her home in Nevada following the Great Recession to travel the American West in her van.

  • ‘Eternals’ Star Signed for Six Marvel Movies That Never Happened

    [ad_1]

Kumail Nanjiani says the poor response to his MCU film Eternals “shattered” him, especially considering none of the other projects he had signed on for at the time have happened.

During an appearance on the Working It Out podcast, the actor, who played Eternal-turned-Bollywood-star Kingo in the 2021 movie, explained how the negative discourse surrounding Eternals ended up being a huge letdown for him both personally and professionally.

“I talked about how I was in this big movie. It came out right after Covid, so I had a year and a half at home to just be like, ‘Oh, when this thing comes out!’ But then it came out and it got really bad reviews and it didn’t do that well,” Nanjiani explained.

The actor also revealed he signed on for six movies and other projects that simply never happened after the film’s failure to catch on like other entries in the MCU.

“I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to be my job for the next 10 years.’ I signed on for six movies. I signed on for a video game. I signed on for a theme park ride. They make you sign up for all this stuff. And you’re like, ‘This is the next 10 years of my life, so I’ll be doing Marvel movies every year and, in between, I’ll do my own little things, whatever I want to do.’ And then none of that happened,” he shared.

READ MORE: Why the DCU Is Nothing Like the MCU (According to James Gunn)

Directed by Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) and released on November 5, 2021, Eternals was a critical and commercial disappointment, drawing middling reviews and making $402 million at the global box office against a $236 million budget.

During an appearance on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast last year, Nanjiani admitted he read “every review” when the movie came out.

“The reviews were bad, and I was too aware of it. I was reading every review and checking too much. It was really, really hard because Marvel thought that movie was going to be really, really well reviewed, so they lifted the embargo early and put it in some fancy movie festivals and they sent us on a big global tour to promote the movie right as the embargo lifted,” Nanjiani shared.

“I think there was some weird soup in the atmosphere for why that movie got slammed so much, and I think not much of it has to do with the actual quality of the movie,” he continued.

Nanjiani also revealed he sought therapy after the response to the film took a toll on his mental health, and that he still talks to his therapist about the experience to this day.

“[My wife] Emily says that I do have trauma from it. We actually just got dinner with somebody else from that movie and we were like, ‘That was tough, wasn’t it?’ and he’s like, ‘Yeah, that was really tough,’ and I think we all went through something similar,” he added.

As for fans, there remain a number of frustrating loose ends from the film that were likely going to be explored in a potential sequel or future MCU crossovers that simply never came to fruition. These include Dane Whitman’s (Kit Harrington) mysterious family ancestry and destiny as Black Knight, the Celestial Arishem’s kidnapping of Eternals Sersi, Phastos, and Kingo at the end of the film, and the story of the Eternal Eros (Harry Styles), who appears in a mid-credits scene.

Last year, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said there were no plans for an Eternals sequel at that time.
