HAYWARD — Police are investigating after a 66-year-old man allegedly killed his wife in a Hayward apartment on Thursday evening.
Police responded about 5:46 p.m. after receiving 911 calls that a woman was yelling in an apartment in the 25000 block of Cypress Avenue in the city’s Jackson Triangle neighborhood.
As officers arrived, witnesses said a man was seen walking out of the apartment and left in a vehicle. Officers found the woman in the apartment with stab wound, police said in a news release.
Medical crews responded and pronounced her dead at the scene. Her name was not released.
About 8:26 p.m. Gary Barroga Garcia turned himself in to authorities in another city and he was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Anyone with information related to the case is asked to call Detective Niedenthal at (510) 293-7176.
CHICAGO (WGN) — An 11-year-old boy was fatally stabbed in Chicago while defending his pregnant mother against her ex-boyfriend, who was released from prison a day before the attack, police said. Crossetti Brand, 37, was charged Friday with first-degree murder in the death of Jayden Perkins, as well as attempted first-degree murder for allegedly stabbing Perkins’ 33-year-old mother.
Brand also faces charges of armed robbery, aggravated domestic battery, unlawful use of a weapon, violating a protection order and three counts of home invasion with a deadly weapon. Investigators said the deadly stabbing happened inside the victims’ home at the Peterson Plaza apartment complex on Wednesday, March 13.
Perkin’s mother was about to leave her apartment to take her two sons to school around 7:45 a.m., but as she opened the door, Brand allegedly forced his way inside and began stabbing her. According to court records, Perkins was trying to protect his mother when he was fatally stabbed in the chest. The boy’s younger brother witnessed the attack, authorities said, but was uninjured.
The woman was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. Officials confirmed Friday she was alert and expected to survive, along with her unborn child.
“This is something that should never had happened,” Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling said during a press conference Friday.
Brand had served a 16-year sentence in a 2015 case for home invasion, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and aggravated domestic battery involving a different victim, Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) and court records show. He was released from Stateville Prison on mandatory supervised release in October 2023, the IDOC confirmed.
“At that time he received a memorandum reminding him of the order of protection regarding victim one,” Assistant State’s Attorney Anne McCord Rodgers said.
Perkins’ mother reportedly dated the suspect more than 15 years prior and had an active order of protection against him in place. She registered herself in the IDOC system to receive alerts regarding Brand’s release from prison.
According to the court documents, the suspect allegedly sent the victim a text message threatening her and her family on Jan. 30. He then allegedly went to her home on Feb. 1, two days later, ringing the doorbell multiple times and attempting to pull the handle.
Prosecutors said the victim contacted the parole board, and Brand was taken back into custody, only to be released on parole weeks later on March 12, one day before the deadly stabbing.
According to a request for an emergency order of protection filed on Feb. 21, the victim wrote that Brand “sent me several text messages saying he would kill me and my family. He would wait outside my house and shoot me. I have pics.”
A screenshot of the Order of Protection filed by the mother of 11-year-old Jayden Perkins on Jan. 30, 2024.
A judge did not grant the request for the emergency order of protection and instead scheduled a hearing on the matter on March 13, but it was already too late. Court records paint a history of domestic violence against the victim by Brand, who violated an order of protection involving the woman three times back in 2008 — a case he received a three-year sentence for, according to the IDOC.
During Brand’s sentencing in that case, he was served with an order of protection that listed the victim and her mother as protected parties, prosecutors said.
“When he was served with this order of protection, he ripped it up in front of a judge in open court,” McCord Rodgers said.
Brand has several other felony and misdemeanor convictions, including a 2009 non-domestic related case involving possession of a stolen motor vehicle, where he was sentenced to four years in prison, and a 2005 battery case, where he served 10 days in county jail, records show.
“This is someone who should not have been on the street,” Snelling said.
According to the bond proffer filed in the deadly stabbing, Brand was captured on surveillance video several times, both near the crime scene and on CTA cameras, leaving after his alleged involvement in the attack.
Several other items were recovered with a red blood-like substance on them, including a knife, clothing, and a stolen cellphone belonging to the victim, prosecutors said. Results of forensic testing on those items is pending.
Perkins remembered for his kindness at vigil
On Friday night, family and friends of the 11-year-old boy killed gathered at the apartment complex where the attack happened. They said they are going to miss Perkins immensely.
The child was in sixth grade at Peirce School of International Studies.
Over 70 classmates, teachers and families also came together at the apartment complex Thursday night for a vigil.
The 11-year-old was remembered for his kindness, and a memorial has filled up the halls of Peirce — where he was known for uplifting his classmates.
“He sees when people need help or when they are feeling down, and he helps them. He comes up to them and… says a joke to try to make them laugh,” friend Mason Hamm recalled.
Perkins loved to dance and perform. He starred in school productions and was the narrator in last year’s Dr. Seuss play. This year he was scheduled to be Nemo in “Finding Nemo.”
Friends said they’re considering rewriting the script so it honors him.
“It’s not going to be the same without him,” Hamm said. “Jayden, we love you.”
Brand is due back in court on April 3. During Friday’s hearing, emotions ran high among family members of Perkins as Brand entered the courtroom. Several people were removed.
“Jayden was a bright light in his community. We grieve alongside his family and community as we reckon with this unthinkable loss. We pray for Jayden’s mother’s recovery. We will never forget Jayden, who was taken from us much too soon. May God rest his soul in eternal peace.” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement on Saturday morning.

HOUSTON, Texas – A Houston man is accused of using a machete to attack his own family members on Wednesday.
Neighbors who lives in the Vista at Westchase apartments say a man, who hasn’t been identified by police, attacked both his mother and sister just before 10 a.m.
The Houston Police Department tells KPRC 2 that officers, including the SWAT team, responded to the apartment building around 9:40 a.m. after getting reports of two women stabbed and slashed by a man. That same man then barricaded himself inside an apartment.
People that live nearby say one of the victims told them the suspect was her brother. She also said he stabbed their mother as well.
“I kept hearing, help me, help me screaming, help me, help me,” said Kiara Bailey, who walked outside of her apartment to find the teen laying on the ground bleeding. “So, I immediately ran back in the house and called ambulance. They was telling me to apply pressure, but it was too many stab wounds to even apply pressure.”
The mother was also laying on the ground, in the grass across the courtyard from Bailey’s apartment.
According to neighbors, the man was armed with a machete along with another long knife.
“It was the hand knife that you stick your hand into,” explained Jamia Hardy. “And you can, like, stab stuff with. He used one of those.”
The sister, who neighbor’s estimate to be in her late teens or early 20s, made it to a neighbor’s door to ask for help. You can follow her barefoot bloody footprints to the downstairs door where her handprint is left in blood.
“They had serious injuries. Lacerations to the deep laceration to the forearm,” said another neighbor, Eric Taylor.
“She kept saying her brother did it. Her brother did it. He’s in the house. He went in the house,” Bailey added.
The man barricaded himself inside the apartment where neighbor’s say the family lives.
Houston Police, the SWAT team and the Houston Bomb Squad all responded.
Some officers took refuge and vantage points inside the living room’s of some residents.
“They were in on our living room, but I can see why they used our living room because it’s a direct shot to the apartment, just in case he was to come out and backfire towards them,” Hardy said.
Neighbors say after about an hour standoff, the man surrendered to police. Cell phone video shows the moment officers dawning tactical gear and long rifles arrested the man.
“I seen he just bloody, bloody, just bloody. And he came out like nothing never happened,” said Pamela Cunningham.
The two women were rushed to the hospital, each with multiple stab and slash wounds.
Houston Police say they arrested the man and he will be charged with aggravated assault. Investigators have not yet released a motive.

An argument over snoring turned deadly in Pennsylvania last week.
According to WPVI, Christopher James Casey was arrested on Thursday for fatally stabbing 62-year-old neighbor Robert Wallace over a long-standing feud they had over the 55-year-old suspect’s snoring. Here’s what happened. Casey was eating dinner on Sunday when the victim suddenly went to his house in Hatboro and stepped onto his porch to remove the screen from one of the windows. Wallace proceeded to get into a heated argument with Casey about the loud nighttime noises he made.
After about 20 minutes of arguing through the window, the affidavit, obtained by WPVI, stated that Wallace calmed down and wanted to shake hands to end the fight. He even offered to help pay for nasal surgery to reduce Casey’s snoring. Wow! That was a kind gesture! However, Casey did not seem to be happy about it! He then unlocked the front door and allegedly stabbed Wallace several times in the chest with a large, military-style knife. Police wrote in the charging documents:
“Casey described Wallace as being very ‘volatile’ ‘very strong,’ ‘he’s angry’ type of person. Casey said he did not believe Wallace’s intention of ‘try to work this out’ and ‘shake hands’ and try ‘to fix this situation’ was genuine. As a result, Casey decided to ‘surprise him’ by stabbing Wallace with a knife.”
OMG?!
Per the affidavit, Casey called 911 following the attack, telling dispatchers that Wallace “broke my window.” He added:
“I attacked my neighbor. He came to attack me.”
When the Upper Moreland Township Police arrived at the scene, they found blood inside and outside the home. Wallace was about 50 feet from his house with stab wounds, and he was rushed to the Abington Hospital. However, he succumbed to the injuries. Casey also required medical attention at the hospital for what law enforcement stated was a self-inflicted and accidental stab wound on his leg.
At the hospital, Casey told police that Wallace had not been threatening him when he stabbed him in the doorway. But he noted that they were having “personal issues” for the past year and a half over Wallace’s complaints about his snoring. The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office stated that “the two men were known to Upper Moreland Police due to ongoing arguments, including arguments about the defendant’s loud snoring, which the victim could hear through the shared wall of the two residences.”
Following the attack, Casey was charged with third-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, and possessing instruments of a crime. He has remained in prison Friday with bail set at $1 million.

Welp, knife comes at you fast! The inmate accused of stabbing Derek Chauvin 22 times planned a “Black Friday” attack to symbolize “Black Lives Matter,” according to federal prosecutors.
Source: Hennepin County Jail / Hennepin County Jail
That certainly gives a new meaning to “reason for the season.” Authorities identified the federal inmate behind the “Shanksgiving” stabbing as John Turscak. He reportedly plotted on the ex-cop convicted of murdering George Floyd for a month.
When the big day finally came, Turscak was allegedly ready for Chauvin with an “improvised knife.” NBC News reports Turscak faces charges of attempted murder, assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
Dude in jail stabbed Derek Chauvin 22 times?? I gotta hear his side of the story
— Bearded Shinobi of the South (@_Homer_Pimpson) December 1, 2023
As BOSSIP previously reported, a fellow prisoner tried to carve Chauvin like a turkey on Nov. 24, the day after Thanksgiving. Unlike George Floyd, who suffocated to death for nine minutes, Chauvin received “life-saving measures” from staff at Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson. He was transferred to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
As soon as news of Chauvin’s stabbing made headlines, speculation spread about it helping him overturn his conviction. The attack came only one week after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his appeal.

Now that prosecutors have identified the inmate who stabbed Chauvin, there are even more questions than answers.

Who Is John Turscak, And What Did He Have To Do With The Mexican Mafia And FBI Before Allegedly Stabbing Derek Chauvin?
Source: Peter Dazeley / Getty
Many who wish nothing but the worst for Derek Chauvin celebrated his previously unknown attacker as a vigilante. Now that we know the man behind the “Shanksgiving” stabbing, some say it’s looking funny in the light. Chauvin’s supporters claim it proved his innocence. Meanwhile, several of the killer cop’s critics wonder how his attacker missed 22 times.
In light of the non-fatal stabbing of Derek Chauvin 22 times by another inmate, I have a pressing question involving the inadequacy of anatomy education in school.
Federal prosecutors claimed that John Turscak planned a “Black Friday” assault for the “Black Hand,” a symbol associated with the Mexican Mafia. According to court documents, he joined the Mexican Mafia in 1990.
Per the Los Angeles Times, he greenlit “assaults of individuals for infractions of Mexican Mafia rules.” He also reportedly collected “taxes” from drug dealers and street gangs in “return for Mexican Mafia protection and permission to engage in narcotics trafficking.”
The inmate accused of stabbing Derek Chauvin, the former police officer who killed George Floyd, said he attacked him on Black Friday because it’s “symbolic with the Black Lives Matter movement and the ‘Black Hand symbol’ associated with the Mexican Mafia criminal organization.” pic.twitter.com/lpPcjyE7Zv
Turscak took credit for the murder of a man in Folsom Prison in 1990. He claimed to authorize another man’s murder in 1998. In 1997, the FBI recruited him as an informant. The investigation led to indictments of more than 40 alleged Mexican mafia members and associates.
However, working for the feds only got him in more trouble. Federal prosecutors dropped him for admitting to “dealing drugs, extorting money, and authorizing assaults” while on their payroll. He pleaded guilty to racketeering and conspiracy to commit murder for a 30-year sentence. Turscak’s time was almost up. His release date was scheduled for June 3, 2026.
John Turscak “denied wanting to kill D.C. However, Turscak stated that he had been thinking about assaulting D.C. for approximately one month because D.C. is a high-profile inmate.”
Turscak, 52, is charged with four crimes, including attempted murder. Here’s the full filing. pic.twitter.com/gqu9ClLR04
Turscak waived his Miranda rights in his interview with FBI agents on Nov. 26. Although he reportedly claimed responsibility for planning out the assault and stabbing Chauvin 22 times, Turscak “denied wanting to kill” him. So he did all this for shanks and giggles?
lol They’re claiming that the dude who stabbed Derek Chauvin 22 times is a government plant
Its always gotta be some crazy conspiracy versus “the pig who murdered a man in cold blood got stabbed for being a pig who murdered a man in cold blood”
— Lexi Where This Goes, GOAT Arc (@LexiWhereShesAt) December 1, 2023
Some suspect Turscak knew he’d be safer with a life sentence than as a free man who turned on the feds and the Mexican Mafia. After all, he reportedly admitted to choosing Chauvin for his status. He reportedly spent a month thinking about a date and symbolic motive that would guarantee more major headlines. Then he wasted no time telling FBI agents all about it.
You stab a nigga 22 times, you’re a former FBI agent, and the man lived. Oh you wanted him to live with those scars. That was on purpose. We need to start calling Derek Chauvin “22” 🤣
Either way, Chauvin survived his serious injuries and remains in federal custody for the rest of his two decades behind bars. With these new charges against Turscak, he could face just as much additional time or more for the “Shanksgiving” shenanigans. Maybe that’s what Turscak wanted all along.
Federal prosecutors said former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was found guilty of murdering George Floyd, was stabbed 22 times by a fellow inmate in a federal prison in Arizona last month. The 52-year-old suspect has been charged with attempted murder.

The stabbing of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in federal prison on Friday has sparked conspiracy theories among various right-wing voices online, citing false claims about the death of George Floyd and comparing the situation to the death of Jeffrey Epstein.
In May 2020, Chauvin killed Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, by kneeling on his neck for nine minutes during a confrontation. The incident sparked mass nationwide protests calling for police reform and racial equality, and later led to Chauvin’s dismissal from the Minneapolis police force. A year later, he was convicted of charges related to Floyd’s death and sentenced to over 22 years in prison.
On Friday, the Associated Press reported that Chauvin had been stabbed by a fellow inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona. The Bureau of Prisons confirmed only that an inmate had been assaulted at 12:30 p.m. local time and left in serious condition. “Life-saving measures” were performed on the inmate, who was later transported to a hospital for further treatment. The inmate’s current condition remains unknown.
Newsweek reached out to the Bureau of Prisons via email for comment.

In reaction to the news, various right-wing voices on X, the platform previously known as Twitter, began circulating a new conspiracy that Chauvin’s reported attack was an intentional move to silence him. In circulating the theory, the users cited a widely debunked claim, once spread by former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, that Chauvin was not responsible for Floyd’s death, but rather he had died from drug-induced conditions. The claim also hinged on the debunked narrative that Floyd’s official autopsy was altered, which it was not.
Newsweek debunked these claims in a fact-check last month. While the autopsy noted that Floyd had some amount of fentanyl and other illicit drugs in his system, they were not found to have contributed to his death. While it also noted that he had not suffered “life threatening injuries,” Floyd’s death was attributed to “cardiopulmonary arrest” from “law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression,” and ultimately deemed a homicide.
“Tucker Carlson on Oct 20th: Derek Chauvin did not murder George Floyd. A month after this newly released toxicology report confirmed Floyd’s overdose death, Derek Chauvin was nearly Epsteined!” an X user going by “Eddie” posted. “Chauvin’s stabbing was also only a few days after [the Supreme Court] denied his appeal request.”
“My God, they gave other prisoners access to Chauvin, after he killed black Jesus? Still think that Epstein didn’t kill himself?” Richard Hanania, president of right-wing think tank Center for Study of Partisanship and Ideology (CPSI), wrote in his own post. “The federal prison system is run by incompetents picked for diversity reasons.”
“They’re trying to Epstein #DerekChauvin because the feds altered the autopsy and they can’t hide it anymore,” user “Salty Texan” wrote. “Derek Chauvin is an innocent man.”
Many of the users spreading the conspiracy have made allusions to the death of Epstein, the convicted sex offender found guilty of running a sex trafficking ring in which he provided underage girls for various high-profile individuals.
Epstein died in prison in July 2019, with the official cause being suicide by hanging. Despite that, numerous conspiracy theories, popular all along the political spectrum, claim that he was actually murdered in an effort to keep him from naming any of his famous clients. While widely accepted as fact by many, the theories have never been proven.
