  • City approves Phillies’ plan to expand New Era team store at Citizens Bank Park

City approves Phillies’ plan to expand New Era team store at Citizens Bank Park

As one of MLB’s top-ranked teams for attendance, the Phillies want to do something about the cramped space inside the New Era team store at Citizens Bank Park. The shop has been so busy in recent years that the Phillies opened up a tented area outside to handle crowds of customers.

This week, the team received approval from the Philadelphia Art Commission to move forward with a plan that will expand the size of the team store. The shop is at the corner of Pattison Avenue and Citizens Bank Way, next to the third base gate. Review and approval by the art commission is required for such renovations because the land is city-owned and leased to the team.

The Phillies’ plan calls for adding more than 3,500 square feet of floor space to the shop. The expansion project will include creating another 3,500 square feet for storage space in the main concourse and on the suite level above the shop. The team hopes to complete the work during the nest two offseasons.

At a meeting with the art commission on Wednesday, team officials said the expansion will utilize part of an existing landscaped area in front of the store. The team also will convert unused space inside the ballpark to make the shop larger. Project renderings show the renovated space would match the current facade of the team store using a similar canopy roof design and pink masonry.

The team store renovation would require the removal trees outside the stadium, but the Phillies plan to include other landscaping as part of the redesigned entrance area at the third base gate.

Another rendering shows the Phillies’ proposed expansion of the New Era team store at Citizens Bank Park.

During the team’s presentation to the art commission, the Phillies said they’ll need to remove six trees from the plaza outside the shop and replace them with new landscaping. Team officials said the goal is to make the store more visible by using low-lying plants. Members of the art commission approved the project on condition that the Phillies look for ways to plant more trees and create shaded areas around the shop.

The Phillies told the art commission their philosophy for the ballpark has changed since it opened in 2004. Although Citizens Bank Park was designed to help fans get off the street and into their seats as soon as possible, there has been a growing emphasis on finding ways to engage fans in areas surrounding the ballpark.

On the other side of the third base gate, the Phillies said they created the Pass & Stow pub and installed a wooden pergola with shaded seating to give fans places to relax. Team officials told the art commission they will explore ways they can tweak the design to address the comments they received, although such adjustments are not required.

The Phillies did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the team store expansion.

Planning documents submitted to the city list Ewing Cole as the project architect and Pennoni Associates as the civil engineer.

The New Era team store stocks a mix of jerseys, hats, Phillies-branded souvenirs and other fan apparel. Plans to expand the space come as Citizens Bank Park prepares to host the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, which is expected to bring in fans from around the United States and will have its own line of merchandise.

Recent upgrades at Citizens Bank Park include last year’s installation of the PhanaVision video board, which replaced a much smaller screen that had been there since the ballpark opened. Before the start of this season, the team also installed a new outfield scoreboard.

The Phillies rank third in home attendance this year, averaging 41,398 people per game. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers (48,403) and New York Yankees (41,816) average more fans in their ballparks.

Earlier this year, the Phillies announced they are joining Comcast Spectacor in a long-term development plan to add amenities to the Sports Complex in South Philadelphia. The $2.5 billion master plan calls for new restaurants, stores, fan plazas, a concert venue, a hotel and future residential development.

Police investigate video of man getting knocked out by Yankees fan outside Xfinity Live!

Police are investigating a viral video that shows a man getting smacked to the ground by another man wearing a Yankees jersey outside Xfinity Live! in South Philadelphia.

Police provided few details about the altercation when contacted Wednesday afternoon. The video began circulating on X, formerly Twitter, on the World Star Hip Hop account just before 1 a.m. Wednesday. The Yankees have been in town the last three days and completed a series sweep of the Phillies this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. Police didn’t say whether the incident happened Monday night or after Tuesday night’s game that went into extra innings.

In the video, a man wearing an Aaron Judge Yankees jersey is seen shouting at a man in a black shirt outside Xfinity Live! near the corner of 11th Street and Pattison Avenue. It’s unclear from the video what led to the argument. The man in the Yankees jersey goads the other man to “swing” at him and start a fight as fans are seen walking away from the ballpark in the background. Then the Yankees fan gets in the man’s face and shouts insults at him before clubbing him on the side of the head and knocking him to the ground. (NOTE: The video below contains explicit language).

Police didn’t say whether the man who was knocked out was injured or taken to a hospital. Police also didn’t say whether a suspect had been taken into custody. Authorities said anyone with information about the incident can call the Philadelphia police tip line at (215) 686-TIPS.

Surveillance video shows gunmen shooting into South Philly takeout spot, people ducking for cover

Surveillance video shows numerous flash bangs as two gunmen get out of an SUV and open fire on a South Philadelphia Chinese takeout restaurant and more gunshots appearing to come from someone inside the vehicle.

Five men in total were hurt in the shooting at the Twin Dragon takeout restaurant at South 27th and Dickinson streets in the Grays Ferry neighborhood shortly before 10:25 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2024, Philadelphia police said.

A slowed-down section of the video released on Wednesday, July 3, shows the driver of the black Jeep Grand Cherokee also appearing to fire a gun several times as the two other gunmen attempt to get into the SUV to escape.

One of the masked gunmen — both with hoods over their heads — appears to limp back to the getaway vehicle.

At least one person inside the store began firing back, Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said Tuesday morning. Another angle of the video shows people inside the store ducking for cover

Five men — aged between 21 and 45 — were hurt, four were shot in the legs and one was struck in his arm, police said.

Police transported one man to the hospital, while the other four arrived in private cars, investigators said. They were all hospitalized in stable condition at area hospitals as of Tuesday morning.

Five customers inside the takeout, including a child under the age of 10, were not struck by bullets, Small said.

Investigators found evidence of at least 40 shots being fired outside the takeout and another 12 being fired from inside, Small said. Police found at least one gun at the scene.

At least one gunshot victim was being held as a suspect, Small said Tuesday morning. Police didn’t elaborate on that Wednesday.

Police also held a vehicle that was used to bring a gunshot victim to the hospital so it could be investigated for clues.

Police urged anyone who recognizes the gunmen to call 911 immediately. The police department’s Shooting Investigation Group asked that anyone with information call them at 215-686-8271 or submit a tip anonymously by calling or texting 215-686-TIPS (8477).

This wasn’t the first time a shooting took place at this same Chinese takeout restaurant as a teen was shot there while begging for his life back in 2017.

  • South Philadelphia pizzeria serving up some of the best slices in the US, New York Times says

South Philadelphia pizzeria serving up some of the best slices in the US, New York Times says

The New York Times shared a list of the “22 Best Pizza Places in the United States” and one South Philadelphia pizzeria made the cut.

The Times named San Lucas Pizza – located along Bouvier Street near McKean – as one of the best.

Husband and wife duo Valentin Palillero and Eva Mendez, opened San Lucas Pizza back in 2005, according to Times.

At first the couple sold traditional pies that were familiar to the historically Italian neighborhood but they wanted to switch things up and incorporate new flavors.

“Using the same simple crust as a base, new recipes used ingredients found in Mexican cuisine: slightly smoky guajillo sauce, spiced pork, black beans, flecks of onion and chopped cilantro,” Times Writer Regan Stephens wrote. “Nowadays, these varieties, served with a side of lime wedges, are as popular as the originals. But they’re also a vivid link in a neighborhood that’s been an epicenter of Italian and Mexican immigration, roughly three-quarters of a century apart.

Stephens calls San Lucas Pizza “a vivid link in a neighborhood that’s been an epicenter of Italian and Mexican immigration.”

“We are very happy. For a long time we worked, for like 18 years working at the pizza shop, so we are very happy,” Palillero explained to NBC10.

  • Aramark workers at Wells Fargo Center will strike again next week

Aramark workers at Wells Fargo Center will strike again next week

Aramark workers at the Wells Fargo Center will strike Thursday, April 25, interrupting a 76ers playoff game, employees announced at a City Council meeting

This is the second time workers declared a strike as they negotiate for a new contract with the food company.

“We are fans of the team, but I must announce at this time, we will be starting another strike again on Thursday for the playoffs,” Carlton Epps, who works for Aramark at all three stadiums, said during the meeting.

Bartenders, concession workers, cooks, servers, dishwashers and warehouse employees represented by the Unite Here Local 274 union have been in negotiations for the past few months. Workers seek higher wages and full-time benefits, as they often work at all three sports complex venues – Wells Fargo Center, Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field – but their hours at each are counted separately. Thus, many work the equivalent hours of a full-time job without health care benefits.

Workers gained the support of City Council members earlier this month, and they spoke at Thursday’s meeting regarding Resolution 240295 for official council support. The union authorized a strike in March after 92% of workers voted in favor. The council adopted the resolution during the meeting.

Hundreds of workers held a strike April 9, picketing outside the stadiums. As a result, Unite Here said that workers and Aramark resumed negotiations. However, it said the latest proposal from Aramark offered only a $0.25 hourly raise.

It shouldn’t be this way with a company as large as Aramark for workers to only be offered a $0.25 raise. It’s ridiculous,” worker Fred Motley said. “We shouldn’t have to struggle to afford basic health care necessities. We need family-sustaining wage increases.”

Aramark has separate contracts with each venue. Contracts with Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field also recently expired and will need to be renegotiated. Workers, though, are seeking a single contract for all three stadiums.

Despite being injured, he managed to run back to his house on nearby South Lambert Street to get help, police on the scene said.

Police officers rushed the man to the hospital, where he was listed in stable condition early Monday morning, police said.

No word yet on the circumstances and motive of the shooting. No weapons were recovered, investigators said.

  • Family throws surprise birthday party at Eagles tailgate for Vietnam veteran

Family throws surprise birthday party at Eagles tailgate for Vietnam veteran

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Eagles fans woke up bright and early Sunday morning to tailgate ahead of the game, some of fans celebrating a lot more than the best team in football.

“The first time I cried was the ’80 Super Bowl when the Raiders beat us,” said Dan McAlee, who has been an Eagles fan since he was six years old.

This game became one of his all time favorites before the team even took the field. The Vietnam veteran’s entire family surprised him for his 70th birthday.

“I went to help the bus driver move his truck off the highway and they were all on board. I got on there and there they all were,” he said.

In a sea of thousands of Eagles fans, Dan wasn’t the only one celebrating his big day with a tailgate.

“I turned 30 today, so it’s a good day. All my friends and family are here having a great time,” said Rob D’Adrea from Northeast Philadelphia. He boarded a bus to the stadiums with 75 of his closest friends and family, bringing plenty of games and lots of good food.

“We have smoked jerk chicken, we have smoked pull pork here, baked mac and cheese,” he said showing off their spread, which is, of course, the center of any good Eagles tailgate.

“We got the breakfast sandwiches, bacon egg and cheese, pork roll egg and cheese. We got the tater tots, and the mimosas. Most important part, the mimosas,” said Courtney Bartkowski from Ewing, New Jersey.

She and her friends started the day off right. Eagles fans far and wide wanted to show Tennessee why Philadelphia is the best football city.

“This is a city like no other. Everybody has a great time when they come to Philly,” said Shelley Holt from Lawrenceville, New Jersey.

It helps Eagles fans are cheering on the number one team in football. It’s the gift that keeps on giving for lifelong fans like Dan.

“I think this is the best team that I’ve seen in a long, long time,” he said.

Dan’s actual birthday isn’t until January. Now that he’s had his party he is hoping for one more present; an Eagles trip to the Super Bowl.
