  • Southminster Partners With Memory & Movement Charlotte to Ease Care Access

Southminster Partners With Memory & Movement Charlotte to Ease Care Access

    [ad_1]

Southminster’s mission has long included a commitment to collaborate with like-minded organizations to accelerate impact on all generations across Charlotte Mecklenburg’s broader community. The community’s latest initiative has given birth to a new partnership with Memory & Movement Charlotte, a nonprofit practice providing comprehensive clinical and diagnostic expertise for individuals with cognitive and movement concerns.

The practice focuses on education, support, and empowerment for both patients and those who care for them. Their work greatly enhances the lives of families on a daily basis. “Dr. Edwards and his amazing staff, especially his nurse Shelly, have walked this difficult walk with me and my husband in indescribable ways,” said Georgia Ann Porcher. “They have truly partnered and supported the caregiver through this long journey. My family joins me in thanking them for their skill and compassion as we continue down this road.”

According to Ben Gilchrist, President and CEO at Southminster, “We are now going a step farther in our collaboration by expanding our Embrace Clinic to include a satellite location for Memory & Movement. This expanded access will not only enhance health outcomes for our residents but for those living in the greater Charlotte region.”

“We could not manage this journey of my husband’s dementia without Dr. Edwards and Memory and Movement Charlotte (MMC),” says Eutha Hobson. Chuck Edwards is a personal friend of my husband from his medical practice days. It has truly been a blessing to be able to see Dr. Edwards at Southminster, where we live. The support from MMC has been a godsend for our family.”

    Southminster Patient Scholarship

The Southminster Patient Scholarship program was designed to eliminate financial barriers some patients and caregivers face when attempting to access quality care in our region. Specifically, the scholarships assist families who need help affording Memory & Movement Charlotte’s annual fee and also help offset the cost of clinical services for patients who need assistance.

Dealing with a progressive memory or movement condition is incredibly difficult, and the scholarship fund relieves the additional stress of financial concerns. In calendar year 2022, 68 patients applied for and received full or partial scholarships. Since September, clinical fees were waived for patients who do not have sufficient insurance coverage and fees were waived for patients who entered hospice. Physicians waived annual fees for an additional 62 patients, many of whom have significant financial need but were unable to complete a scholarship application.

“We are committed to treating every family in need of our services, regardless of their ability to pay,” said Dr. Charles Edwards II, M.D., Founding Physician at Memory & Movement Charlotte. “Scholarship support makes it possible for us to keep that promise in a way that is financially sustainable. We are deeply grateful to Southminster for their critical role in helping us meet the increasing demand for compassionate, comprehensive care.”

“Partnering with another non-profit in this manner means people experiencing Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and related conditions now have another way to access the best in diagnosis, treatment, support and education that our region has to offer,” said Tracy McGinnis, VP Philanthropy & Strategic Initiatives at Southminster.

  • Southminster’s $140 Million Expansion Reflects a New Era in Senior Living

Southminster’s $140 Million Expansion Reflects a New Era in Senior Living

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Jan 5, 2023 14:00 EST

Following a national trend in recent years, foresighted couples and singles have begun jockeying for positions on waitlists at Life Plan Communities like Southminster when they reach their late-60s or 70s, instead of their 80s. In order to embrace this evolution and remain on the leading edge of senior living in the Sunbelt city of Charlotte, Southminster has strategically analyzed and anticipated evolving demographic demand and embarked on a well-thought-out eight-year expansion journey.

In 2020, it completed its first three-phase expansion that included Embrace Health at Southminster, a new person-centered model for higher levels of care. According to Mary Cooper, Chief Operating Officer, who championed this new model of care early on, “The neighborhood design of our small-house model ensures that residents and families always remain central to decision-making regarding their care as their needs change.”

Along with this 200,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art health center, Southminster’s $140 million expansion included 86 new apartments that increased total Independent Living residences by 27 percent. Southminster had been fully occupied for about four years prior to the groundbreaking, and their waitlist doubled during construction.

Never willing to slow down, Southminster has now embarked on its next strategic plan, “Driving Toward Excellence 2022-2035.” It encompasses objectives ranging from diversity, equity and inclusion to technology and data analytics, land acquisition and cultivating innovation. According to Lisa McClellan, Vice President of Human Resources, “Our eye will always be on staffing and recruiting initiatives, but we are increasing our focus and energy toward employee retention and engagement. COVID took its toll on gatherings and engagement opportunities, so we are redesigning our HR priorities to fit the needs of our people.”

Immediate construction within the most recent strategic plan includes renovating two dining rooms and the main corridor beginning in January 2023. Southminster will also implement a new master site plan that includes outdoor amenities such as outdoor patios and fire pits, walkways, and exercise spaces.

Part of the plan in this new era of senior living involves philanthropy and making an impact on the broader community. Tracy McGinnis, Southminster’s Vice President of Philanthropy and Strategic Initiatives, reports that since its inception, Southminster’s fund has distributed over $13 million in financial support to residents living on its South Charlotte campus. Since expanding its philanthropic mission more than six years ago, Southminster has given over $3 million in philanthropic support to various non-profits across Charlotte Mecklenburg.

Southminster recently announced a collaboration with The Ivey, a Charlotte non-profit devoted to serving individuals living with early memory or cognition concerns and their caregivers through programs designed to optimize brain health for aging well. It also strengthened its partnership with The Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte, a local non-profit with a mission that includes offering lifelong learning, free transportation, and Medicare counseling to seniors across Mecklenburg County.  “We believe in collaborating with like-minded organizations to accelerate impact across all generations through education, the arts, and building healthy communities in Charlotte Mecklenburg,” McGinnis said.

According to Ben Gilchrist, Southminster President and CEO, “Our living, breathing strategic plan will enable expanded services to a broader market throughout the region in the years to come. The future is bright indeed.” For more information on Southminster, please visit www.southminster.org.

  • Home Assist Health: 10 Signs Senior Relative May Need In-Home Care

Home Assist Health: 10 Signs Senior Relative May Need In-Home Care

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Dec 7, 2022

With holidays just around the corner, many families are gathering or visiting senior relatives, creating the perfect opportunity to check on the well-being of aging seniors. Travel has been limited the past few years for many families, so some signs that your aging loved ones may need in-home care may have gone unnoticed.

Sara Wilson, CEO of Home Assist Health, a Phoenix-based nonprofit that serves 1,200 seniors and individuals with disabilities in their homes annually, notes, “Seniors often don’t want to ask for help because they are afraid of being put in a long-term care home or being moved from where they are most comfortable, their homes. The good news, many families don’t realize seniors can stay in their own home and have help come to them.”

Wilson shares that if you visit senior family members this holiday season and notice the following, it may be time to have a conversation about home care:

10 Signs Your Senior Relative May Need In-Home Care

    1. Not keeping up with house cleaning/yard work
    2. Missing appointments or meetings/obligations
    3. Poor personal hygiene or bladder control issues
    4. Difficulty with mobility or standing
    5. Car accident or difficulty driving
    6. Depression, seclusion or changes in mood
    7. Loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy
    8. Multiple chronic illnesses they are trying to manage, like diabetes or high blood pressure
    9. Gained or lost a significant amount of weight; trouble chewing, swallowing or taking medication
    10. Recent fall

    Next Steps for Care

If concerned, consider taking the next step by contacting organizations like Home Assist Health that provide free phone interviews and in-home evaluations. Determine if a loved one has insurance for home care, which may come from a Medicaid Long-Term Care benefit, Select Medicare Advantage Plans, or Private Long-Term Care Insurance Plan. For those without home care benefits from insurance, there are other payment methods for accessing care at home. Visit https://homeassisthealth.org to learn more.

  • Sparr Heights Estates Receives Company’s First-Ever Electric Bus

Sparr Heights Estates Receives Company’s First-Ever Electric Bus

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Nov 3, 2022 15:00 EDT

Sparr Heights Estates, a Sinceri Senior Living Community based in Montrose, California, received the company’s first-ever electric bus on Friday, Oct. 14. The delivery of the bus included a ribbon cutting and celebration amongst the staff and residents, who were able to give the vehicle a test ride.

The electric bus is a large feat for the community as they move toward cleaner and more efficient energy. Electric vehicles emit fewer greenhouse gasses and air pollutants and contribute positively to local air quality.

The bus is a 2022 Ford E-Transit, which offers exclusive features, including a fully electric engine, smart technology, and an average range of 126 miles per trip. This all-electric vehicle will allow the community to charge it on-site, reduce the costs of traveling operations, and decrease their CO2 emissions significantly.

In addition, there will be an estimated 40% lower cost versus comparable buses that operate using gasoline. It also requires less maintenance, fewer moving parts, and eliminates the need for oil changes. The bus charges within 8-11 hours, which will allow Sparr Heights Estates to charge it overnight and be ready for traveling activities every day.

Rachel Rudiger, Sinceri’s V.P. of Environmental Operations, stated, “Sinceri Senior Living is plugging into the future—and the future is electric. In addition to the environmental benefits of our first zero-emissions community van at Sparr Heights Estates, going electric will reduce the ongoing maintenance and preventative care substantially.”

The electric bus is the first step in taking part in California’s ambitious goals on climate change, petroleum reduction, adoption of zero-emission vehicles, and renewable fuels. California’s Clean Transportation Program, which was established in 2007, then extended to 2024, plays a vital role in supporting the state’s sustainable, long-term, economic development. Sparr Heights Estates, as well as Sinceri Senior Living, are looking forward to active participation in the program and continuing to expand into sustainable energy solutions.

  • Diversifying Menu Options in Senior Living Communities

Diversifying Menu Options in Senior Living Communities

    [ad_1]

Being older has never been so popular. More than 55 million Americans are 65 and up and make up a higher percentage of the U.S. population than ever before.

Baby boomers are a huge part of it: Every day, 10,000 of them turn 65 until 2030, causing a “silver tsunami” of changes in the senior living industry.

Food plays an important role: Many of today’s prospective residents have traveled more and eaten better than earlier generations. The three-meals-a-day concept is giving way to all-hours availability. Upscale and organic options like roasted apple and brie grilled cheese and gourmet burgers are replacing senior communities’ menu mainstays like split pea soup and meatloaf.

That may sound like an upgrade, but a lot of people might appreciate a more diverse menu. More than 13% of today’s U.S. seniors were born in other countries. Many moved to America decades ago – and people from all over the world enjoy eating a wide variety of dishes. And yet, the traditional foods of your culture often remain staples of what you cook and eat. So what are the options if you might want to change where you live — by moving to an independent or assisted living community —  but not what you eat?

    More Roti, Less Mashed Potatoes

Many senior communities offer a weekly international food theme, like Taco Tuesday or Italian night. But the majority of the menu is still traditionally Western. That works for most, but not everyone.

“Indian food is so important to our residents that, when they reach the assisted living stage, nobody moves out because they’d have to contend with mashed potatoes and green bean casserole,” says Iggy Ignatius, chairman and founder of ShantiNiketan Retirement Communities in Tavares, FL. “It wouldn’t be spiced up the Indian way.”

While scoping out a second career in social work, Ignatius noticed that many fellow Indians who’d moved to America in the ’70s and ’80s didn’t want to retire to India and leave their children and grandchildren behind.

“There were a lot of retirement communities in America, but no Indian retirement communities. They served food, but not Indian food,” Ignatius says. “I saw that as a niche and thought, if I started something like that, maybe it’d be my social work.”

Though it’s not marketed as an exclusively Indian community, 100% of the residents in the 300-home community are Indian. Of those, many are vegetarians for religious or cultural reasons. As an optional add-on to housing, ShantiNiketan offers a food club. A board of advisors creates the menu and two cooks prepare the dishes. Lunch might be mixed dal (lentil stew) with cabbage, potatoes, green beans, salad, roti (a type of flatbread), rice, yogurt, and pickles. Dinner options include uttapam (pancake made with fermented lentil rice batter), chole puri (a chickpea dish) and radga (potato, white peas, and cilantro) patties.

ShantiNiketan’s Food Club was a major factor in the decision-making process for Leela Shah, who came to America from central India in the early 1960s for college and built a life and family here with her husband, Atul.

“When we first came to America and adjusted to Western cuisine, our weekly diet included American food, but mostly we eat Indian,” she says. “I worked very hard all those years and wanted the option to cook or not cook if I wanted to in our later years.”

With backgrounds in pharmaceutical chemistry, the Shahs were also concerned about nutrition.

“There’s fancier food in other communities, but nutrition is important to us and here we can eat everyday Indian food that’s balanced, healthy, and affordable,” she says. “If it’s not spiced the way we like it, we bring our own black or red pepper to make it hot.”

    Keeping It Spicy

Diversity is always on the menu at Priya Living, an Indian-inspired independent living community with four locations near Indian communities in California, and two more planned in Michigan and Texas.

Where many senior communities have a central clubhouse for dining, Priya Living has a “marketplace” that’s open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and offers a chai bar, hot bar, refrigerated grab-and-go section, and provisions you can purchase and cook in your room. It’s mostly, but not exclusively, vegetarian Indian food, with some chicken, lamb, and goat options and themed international days that include Italian, Mexican, Chinese, and Indo-Chinese cuisines.

“Besides the price and layout, the number one question we get is, ‘What kind of food do you serve?” says Anjan Mitra, Priya Living’s head of innovation and former founder and CEO of Dosa, a family popular Indian restaurant in San Francisco. “The Indian style of cooking is very different. It’s not uncommon for us to use 15 different spices in a dish, but they have to work with each other. People are invested in the food — they want it to be familiar — but they’re not invested in cooking it anymore.”

    An Issue of Identity

As a teenager, Yuji Ishikata cared for his aging grandmother. Once a wonderful cook, she spent her final years eating prepared homestyle Japanese meals similar to what Ishikata now makes for other seniors as the chef of the nutrition program at J-Sei, a Nikkei cultural organization in San Francisco’s East Bay area.

In addition to Japanese meals served at their 14-bed residence facility, J-Sei offers home-delivered lunches Monday through Friday to people 60 or older in their delivery area who can’t shop for or prepare their own meals.

“Losing touch with the Japanese food they’ve eaten their entire lives would be like losing their identity,” Ishikata says. “Whatever else is changing around them, food offers comfort, nostalgia, and familiarity.”

Ishikata sends out around 150 meals every weekday from a set monthly menu that includes chicken teriyaki with broccoli and unagi donburi, or eel over rice, Kazue Nakahara’s favorite dish.

For Nakahara, 76, who’s third-generation Japanese-American, J-Sei’s meal delivery eliminates the large amount of preparation and “fuss” she says Japanese food requires above Western dishes like spaghetti and meatballs.

But her real motivation is comfort: Nakahara’s Japanese-born husband, Hidetaka, 80, has gravitated more to the food of his childhood as he’s aged.

“Before he’d make a fried egg and bacon for breakfast. Now he prefers onigiri, or rice balls, and some miso,” she says. “The older he gets, the more Japanese he gets.”

The Oct. 2 transaction is part of a new venture to support the strategic expansion of Discovery Senior Living’s national portfolio.

    Press Release

    Oct 13, 2022

Funds advised by Lee Equity Partners, LLC (“Lee Equity”) and Coastwood Senior Housing Partners, LLC (“Coastwood”), two specialized investment firms, announced the signing of an agreement to invest in Discovery Senior Living (“Discovery”), one of the nation’s largest and most innovative senior housing operators. The recapitalization will fund Discovery’s continued expansion and operational platform enhancements as it positions itself to meet the evolving needs of all industry stakeholders and take advantage of the myriad of opportunities in the maturing industry.

This partnership will usher in the next stage in Discovery’s journey to expand its proprietary National and Regional Brand Management structure, enhance its Experiential Living Operating Programs, as well as continue the evolution of its state-of-the-art business processes focused on delivering a modernized platform producing more transparent and predictable outcomes.

“This strategic recapitalization purposefully combines the strengths and successful experiences of three companies and the resultant innovation-focused efforts will allow the acceleration of Discovery’s ability to execute its vision of creating a scaled company that outperforms the marketplace, addresses some of the legacy industry paradigms and of course focuses on delivering a customized and holistic resident and team member experience,” said Richard J. Hutchinson, CEO, Discovery Senior Living.

“Discovery Senior Living represents the ideal platform to build a leading national senior living operator due to the strength of its team, centralized services, and national and regional brand operating structure. The secular growth tailwinds and consolidation opportunity within senior housing management are very similar to those we observed in the third-party hotel management sector with our Aimbridge Hospitality investment. We seek to replicate that success in partnership with Richard Hutchinson and the Discovery team, as well as Dan Decker and the Coastwood team,” said Yoo Jin Kim, Partner, Lee Equity Partners.

“We believe the partnership among Discovery, Coastwood and Lee Equity will be unique in the senior living industry. Discovery contributes its highly scalable platform and best-in-class senior living operations. Coastwood contributes decades of senior living investment and operating experience. Lee Equity contributes its expertise in business and healthcare services along with its buy-and-build experience. We are excited to combine our capabilities to lead the industry with improved quality of care, technology innovation, and data-driven outcomes,” said Dan Decker, Chairman, Coastwood Senior Housing Partners, LLC. Mr. Decker will assume the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Discovery Senior Living upon closing.

Hutchinson also added, “After nearly 30 years of working in this industry, I could not be more enthusiastic about pushing forward with the natural evolution of our company and industry and believe we will continue to attract the absolute most forward-thinking owners, capital partners and individuals who want to be a part of our dynamic culture and the future of our industry.”

The family of companies in the agreement include Discovery Management Group, Morada Senior Living, TerraBella Senior Living, Discovery Development Group, Discovery Design Concepts, Discovery Marketing Group, and Discovery At Home, a Medicare-certified home healthcare company. The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, is expected to close in Q4 of 2022.

With headquarters in Southwest Florida, Discovery Senior Living currently owns and operates a national, multi-branded portfolio of more than 110 communities in 19 states.

  • Senior Living Communities Like the Carolina Inn Enhance Wellness

Senior Living Communities Like the Carolina Inn Enhance Wellness

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Jul 29, 2022

As people age, focusing on health and wellness is critical to preserving the best quality of life. That’s one reason why senior living communities that bring together housing, meals, socialization, and care have become so popular.

Independent Living is for individuals who can care for themselves but are ready for a more carefree lifestyle without the hassles of maintaining a large home. Independent Living can be found in attached villas or single-level homes, eliminating the need for climbing stairs, or in apartments. While these residences have kitchens, dining plans are typically offered so residents can share meals together in a common space. Other benefits of Independent Living communities are group activities, events, educational programs, and on-site amenities—things many seniors cannot get when aging in place. The Carolina Highlands in Fayetteville, for example, has a wellness center with fitness equipment along with dozens of resources to enhance a person’s social, emotional and physical well-being.

The next level of care is Assisted Living, which is well-suited for those who need help with daily activities such as personal hygiene, grooming, mobility, and medication management. Assisted Living communities offer person-centered care and 24-hour supervision. For instance, The Carolina Inn has trained staff on-site around the clock and the highest licensed nurse-to-resident ratio for Assisted Living communities in the area. Located in Fayetteville’s Village Green neighborhood, The Carolina Inn also offers a wide variety of Life Enrichment programs to support health, fitness, personal growth, and socialization. Dining, which includes three nutritious meals per day, is one of the highlights of The Carolina Inn and many Assisted Living communities since making healthy choices is instrumental to overall wellness for seniors.

Memory Care is a specific category of Assisted Living. Some properties are designed solely to accommodate individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or memory issues. Others have special Memory Care wings or staff trained to care for those exhibiting behavior associated with memory challenges such as confusion and agitation. The Carolina Inn provides encouragement and companionship in a protected environment to support those in the early stages of memory loss so they can continue to live with a sense of purpose.

Seniors needing the highest level of care can move to Skilled Nursing for 24-hour hands-on attention and monitoring. Staffed with licensed nurses and medical professionals, Skilled Nursing provides medical care for short-term recovery after an operation or hospital stay and long-term accommodations for those with cognitive disorders, neurological conditions and chronic illnesses that limit mobility. Services such as rehabilitation, and occupational, physical and speech therapies are offered to help residents regain independence.

CareListings Now Utilized by 15,000+ Senior Care Facilities in the United States

    [ad_1]

Seattle tech startup aims to solve the critical caregiver & nursing shortages in the senior living industry by building the nation’s largest employment network exclusive to CNAs, LPN/LVNs, RNs, and caregivers in senior care.

    Press Release

    Jul 28, 2022

CareListings, the nation’s largest employment network exclusive to caregivers & nurses in senior care, is now utilized by over 20% of all senior care facilities in the U.S. to source candidates and reach families seeking care. This includes over 15,000 skilled nursing facilities, assisted living homes, home care agencies, and home health & hospice agencies.

“We launched four years ago to provide a better way for families to find senior care options and have now become the most comprehensive resource for caregivers & nurses to find senior care employers. It is a privilege to help so many facilities and caregiver heroes who continue to go above and beyond for our elderly loved ones throughout the Covid pandemic,” says the founder and CEO of CareListings, Carl Rogers.

In addition to millions of people using CareListings to explore senior care options annually, thousands of experienced CNA, LPN/LVN, RN, and caregiver job seekers are now signing up every month on CareListings to access employment opportunities in all 50 states.

“The critical caregiver & nursing shortages in senior care are best addressed by connecting facilities directly with candidates for employment, not by overpaying temporary contractors or staffing agencies. With so many facilities struggling financially, it is more important than ever to improve the financial well-being of their employees vs paying third-party contractors.”

    About CareListings

CareListings is the nation’s most comprehensive resource for families and healthcare professionals exploring senior care options online, with direct contact information for over 150,000 long-term care providers for free – including assisted living homes, home care & home health agencies, skilled nursing facilities, hospices, dialysis facilities, and other types of senior care providers.

Senior care employers hiring nurses and caregivers have the ability to update their business listing information, post job listings, and browse employment profiles for nearby caregiver & nurse job seekers at no cost. CareListings’ optional premium services are subscription-based and allow senior care facilities to reach even more families and source more candidates directly, without referral or placement fees.

Caregiver and nurse job seekers in senior care can create a centralized profile on the platform and notify hiring managers of their interest in available positions.

CareListings is based in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, and serves families, caregiver job seekers, and senior care employers across the United States. Learn more at carelistings.com.

Announcing Healthcare Snap, a Free Medicare Tool Democratizing Medicare Cost Transparency

    [ad_1]

HealthcareSnap.com announces the beta launch of its revolutionary, easy-to-use platform for those who are enrolled or aging into Medicare to empower healthcare savings, enable discovery of affordable doctors, compare and anonymously share Medicare costs.

    Press Release

    updated: Jul 26, 2022

In a company statement, “Healthcare Snap was created because, in our experience, traditional Medicare tools are too difficult and expensive to use. Healthcare Snap will remove barriers to Medicare cost discovery, increase innovation, and allow the ones who are most affected by Medicare costs to empower their futures.

“Medicare data intelligence is lacking at scale in the industry, and our proprietary software leverages over a billion of the latest available healthcare cost records from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that is trapped in obscure, user-unfriendly government website databases to make them available for research with a beautiful, easy-to-use interface that increases transparency and price discovery for how doctors charge for Medicare at the national, state, and city levels.”

Healthcare Snap dynamically displays data for over 8 million different medical conditions and procedures that doctors are charging Medicare for across 73 medical specialties like dermatology, oncology, neurology, and psychology in 50 states and over 15,000 cities. We also display local doctors and medical facilities, along with the amounts doctors charge Medicare, ranked lowest to highest with their respective medical codes, and give the user the opportunity to create free, anonymous accounts and share their healthcare experience for any given doctor or procedure.”

Future product features and iterations are already in development. We are building tools to decentralize government healthcare data access like Doctor and HCPCS cost calculators and enable Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage plan detail comparisons.

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 24, 2020

The unique needs of older adults and demands associated with the current pandemic are creating an extremely challenging situation for all of those involved in senior care. Industry leaders are forging relationships in the interest of broadening their reach and delivering a diverse and comprehensive set of resources to seniors and their loved ones across the country. One such partnership, recently announced by WellQor Behavioral Health and Senior Care Authority, allows clients access to resources from both organizations.

In this time, the needs of the senior population are becoming increasingly complex. The threat of the pandemic to senior populations is a major driver of stressful complications in selecting the right care options. Nevertheless, problems that came before the pandemic have not ceased to exist, and they exacerbate the stress that seniors and their families across the country are dealing with right now. People are burdened with balancing a number of different care options that are essential to their wellbeing. The process of aging and transitioning can be overwhelming, prompting issues with family conflict, anxiety, and depression. When industry leaders collaborate, we can centralize care options and make life easier for seniors and families.

A partnership between WellQor and Senior Care Authority means clients of both organizations can take advantage of their complimentary services. Those working with Senior Care Authority can have access to WellQor services aimed at mediating family conflict, monitoring emotional wellbeing, and normalizing stressful transitions. Likewise, seniors working with WellQor can be referred to Senior Care Authority, where qualified care advisors can help educate families and manage their care and living options. Working with families is a specialty of both companies, offering a great synergy in this endeavor.

The care advisors at Senior Care Authority are now uniquely positioned to ensure the emotional wellbeing of their clients. According to CEO Frank Samson, “our clients come to us looking for answers on how to care for their loved ones, and that can be an incredibly stressful time. Now, we can refer them to WellQor before that stress becomes overwhelming, giving the families we serve another option for peace of mind.”

WellQor is now able to refer clients to resources beyond the scope of mental and emotional wellness. According to CEO David Schwam, “partnering with Senior Care Authority allows WellQor to connect clients with resources we can’t provide. The families we work with are often faced with complex decisions related to available care options, and we want them to be able to live as safely and independently as possible despite the challenges they may be facing. By partnering with Senior Care Authority, we now have a nationwide team of experts in eldercare management available to assist in these situations.”

Ensuring access to comprehensive care is true to the mission of both WellQor and Senior Care Authority. Press Release

    updated: Mar 12, 2018

At 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, St. Catherine’s Village will welcome Dr. Thomas Mosley to its Commons Activity Room for an hour-long educational seminar. While the program is free and open to the public, seating is limited so reservations are required.

Dr. Mosley, professor and neurological expert will share the latest advances in Alzheimer’s and dementia research happening now at the University Of Mississippi Medical Center’s (UMMC) MIND Center. Attendees also will have the opportunity to take a virtual look at the new Gertrude C. Ford MIND Research Center in UMMC’s state-of-the-art Translational Research Center.

We are thrilled to have someone of Dr. Mosley’s expertise and standing speak to our residents, their families and anyone who is concerned about the cognitive health of their loved ones.

Mary Margaret Judy, Executive Director at St. Catherine’s Village

The MIND—Memory Impairment and Neurodegenerative Dementia—Center is one of the country’s leading research and clinical care services working to crack the code of Alzheimer’s disease. By combining pioneering research, population-based studies and more than 30 years of data with brain imaging and genetic technologies, the clinical team is making discoveries about Alzheimer’s and its risk factors. The disease affects 5 million Americans and more than 40 million people worldwide.

The mission of the Gertrude C. Ford MIND Research Center is to uncover the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s and related dementias and to develop new treatments. Since the center opened, researchers have not only advanced the understanding of how the brain ages but also identified multiple factors that predict the development of dementia. Uncovering causes and risk factors can lead to improved management and possibly even prevention of cognitive decline with age.

Dr. Mosley is the MIND Center director. A professor of medicine-geriatrics, he has an extensive background in clinical neuropsychology, behavioral neurology and population-based studies in neuroepidemiology. His research efforts have been largely devoted to uncovering how and why the brain changes with age and his contributions have been recognized with several awards. His work has led to discoveries about the brain that show that cognitive decline begins much earlier than previously thought—an insight that could translate into earlier detection and treatment. His latest work promises to push the frontiers of science and medicine by bringing together state-of-the-art brain imaging and powerful new genetic technologies.

“We are thrilled to have someone of Dr. Mosley’s expertise and standing speak to our residents, their families and anyone who is concerned about the cognitive health of their loved ones,” said Mary Margaret Judy, executive director at St. Catherine’s Village. The continuing care retirement community (CCRC) offers two facilities for memory care: Campbell Cove and the Hughes Center. Both are licensed by the State of Mississippi as “Alzheimer’s Assisted Living” facilities and together, they offer a warm, home-like environment for individuals facing memory loss.

The architecture at Campbell Cove and the Hughes Center follow design principles to minimize obstacles so that residents can maintain their independence as long as possible. For example, buildings feature wayfinding cues and circulation paths to guide people from one place to another. They also have small yet distinctive neighborhoods that allow for individual privacy while supporting family-size gatherings.

Campbell Cove accommodates 36 individuals in three color-coded wings, each with a common living room and dining area along with 12 furnished private bedrooms. In the center is a large multipurpose area, arts and crafts room, recreation center, and kitchen. A secure walking garden and landscaped patios give residents the opportunity to spend time outdoors in a familiar and protected setting.

The Hughes Center was created for individuals with advanced memory challenges and offers a calming ambiance for small-group sensory-stimulating activities. Each of the two distinct neighborhoods has 12 furnished private bedrooms and a common living room, dining room, kitchen, and screened-in porch and covered patio.

Beyond the architecture, programming at the two facilities is person-centered with scheduled—but also unplanned—activities to enhance each resident’s quality of life. The staff follows a social model of care to support each person’s capabilities and affirm his or her dignity.

St. Catherine’s Village offers skilled nursing dedicated to memory care, as well. A total of 24 private bedrooms with in-room showers are available for this living option, which combines person-centered memory care with skilled nursing services.

Unparalleled services and facilities are the hallmark of St. Catherine’s Village, as is companionship, a caring staff, access to on-site resident-centered nursing care, and a mission-focused environment. The ministry encourages residents at all levels to enjoy the fullness of life, health, and faith.

It is the first retirement community in Mississippi to earn accreditation by CARF-CCAC. This “commitment to excellence” seal signifies that the campus exceeds the standards established by the nation’s only accrediting body for CCRCs.

St. Catherine’s Village is a service of St. Dominic Health Services, Inc. and is sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, Illinois, who have owned and operated St. Dominic Hospital since 1946.

Located on 160 acres in Madison, St. Catherine’s Village provides the right care at the right time through independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing as well as memory care.

The free seminar on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia is being held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 29 in the Commons Activity Room at St. Catherine’s Village, 200 Dominican Drive in Madison.

The public is invited, but seating is limited so reservations are required. To ensure a seat, call (601) 856-0123, email village@stdom.com or log onto www.StCatherinesVillage.com.
