We’re stepping out of our comfort zone today, and we hope you’ll come along on this journey with us. Here are some of our main takeaways from Lybi Ma’s How to Be Less Miserable!

Book Overview: How To Be Less Miserable

Summary: As human beings, we are all predisposed to a negative mindset. This tendency is a byproduct of the evolution of our species. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors had to stay vigilant at all times—what if a man-eating predator was lurking in their midst? It was more important to be aware of potential danger than to find food. It’s part of our genetic code, and we’ve carried this innate predisposition that something bad is about to happen to us into the twenty-first century. Even the most optimistic among us aren’t immune.

How to Be Less Miserable offers current research on the human brain’s tendency toward negative thinking, why we do it, why it’s so hard to stop doing it, and how we can use evidence-based methods to overcome the patterns that lead to anxiety, depression, and more. The author covers a wide range of topics, including:

    • healthy ways to pursue happiness
    • how to overcome stress and anxiety
    • tools for dealing with emotions
    • building resiliency and mental flexibility
    • the importance of social groups
    • the perils of social media
    • personal growth and the pursuit of passions
    • being kind and true to yourself

The strategies found in this book are based in large part on wisdom from the experts and researchers Lybi Ma has worked with throughout her career. They provide helpful and meaningful ways to manage and overcome negative thinking. Ultimately, How to Be Less Miserable is for anyone searching for a different way to think about emotional and mental health.

Understand That Failures & Mistakes Will Pass

You know when you go to bed and start replaying every single embarrassing moment or negative interaction that has ever happened to you? (Don’t @ us; we’ve been in the same boat.) This cycle will only continue as long as you let it happen. Instead, try to interrupt these thoughts as soon as you notice them. Accept that these failures and mistakes are bound to happen and that they’re meant to help you grow, not to make you cringe or beat yourself up about them daily.

Give Yourself Permission To Feel Good

We know; this seems like a no-brainer. But How to Be Less Miserable reminds us to allow ourselves to be happy. Rather than worrying about how long a happy moment or good feeling will last, let yourself enjoy it just because you can. It doesn’t have to be something earth-shattering like a picturesque proposal in the Swiss Alps. It can be feeling joy from reading one book or clearing out a junk drawer. Celebrate the small wins whenever you can. We promise it’s not a trap.

Stop Trying To Be In Control 24/7

We’re going to hold your hands when we say this. You can’t control every aspect of your life. Sorry! Life will not hesitate to throw your carefully planned schedule into disarray. What matters most is your ability to adapt to these unknown factors and manage your emotions. It will seem very scary to let go of your control at first. But once you accept that not everything will go the way you wanted or planned, then you can feel at peace. It may not be pleasant, but it will ultimately turn out okay.

Lybi Ma’s How to Be Less Miserable serves as a much-needed reminder for us to stop dwelling on the negativity and despairing over every mishap. Instead, we should allow ourselves to feel good and let go of things we can’t control.

How to Be Less Miserable by Lybi Ma goes on sale October 14th, and you can order a copy of it here!

Introduction: Honest Divine Dialogue Reviews and Complaints in 2025

Search interest for “reviews” and “complaints” around Divine Dialogue has grown steadily in 2025. This reflects a common consumer pattern: before purchasing, people want to know not only the promotional highlights but also the frustrations, challenges, and refund experiences of real users. In this cultural moment, where manifestation methods and spiritual‑meets‑science claims circulate widely on TikTok, Reddit, and YouTube, audiences are more skeptical than ever. They want evidence, transparency, and consumer protection, not just lofty promises.

Divine Dialogue is marketed as a “neutral, powerful manifestation technique” blending elements of prayer, meditation, and intention setting. The promotional materials reference concepts like “Quantum Hologram Prayer,” parallel universes, and mentorship by mystical groups such as the “Malachim.” While these narratives capture attention, the core offer is simpler: a series of short videos guiding users through five‑minute daily exercises involving breathing, visualization, and concise spoken phrases. The promise is that this structured routine can improve finances, relationships, energy levels, and overall wellbeing.

From a reviews and complaints perspective, readers want to know: How realistic are these claims? Are the testimonials representative or anecdotal? Is the refund policy genuine and easy to use? And perhaps most importantly, is this a scam or a legitimate digital program? These questions are fair, especially given the broader history of self‑help and manifestation products that sometimes overpromise and underdeliver.

The introduction of this review sets the stage for a consumer‑first analysis. Our aim is to frame Divine Dialogue in a balanced way-acknowledging the appeal of simple daily rituals while also emphasizing the need for realistic expectations. We’ll look closely at the strengths of the program (short, accessible routines; long refund window; inclusive framing for religious and secular users) alongside the common concerns (exaggerated claims, reliance on metaphysical language, limited independent verification). In doing so, we aim to give you a clear picture of whether this program deserves a trial run in your daily routine.

Finally, it’s important to remember the cultural context: programs like Divine Dialogue resonate because they promise control, clarity, and transformation in uncertain times. Whether you view it as a spiritual tool, a structured self‑discipline practice, or simply a motivational system, your experience will depend heavily on personal consistency and mindset. Treat it as a framework to focus your intentions-not as a guaranteed life overhaul.

What Is Divine Dialogue and How Does It Work?

Divine Dialogue is presented as a spiritual/manifestation program that condenses complex ideas into a five‑minute daily ritual. At first glance, it may sound like a mix of prayer, meditation, and affirmation, but the marketing materials emphasize that it is “10X more powerful than manifestation alone.” The idea is that by speaking certain short phrases in a structured sequence-after finding a quiet space, eliminating distractions, and setting a clear intention-users align themselves with desired outcomes.

The practical framework appears straightforward: watch the introductory videos, learn the seven “keys” to effective prayer or intention, and then practice daily. The program suggests you can use Divine Dialogue to focus on a range of goals: attracting relationships, improving finances, boosting energy, or enhancing overall wellbeing. Secular audiences may interpret the system as a mantra‑based meditation routine, while spiritual audiences may embrace it as a new form of prayer rooted in mystical traditions. Either framing relies on the same behavioral principle-consistent repetition of meaningful cues can shift mindset and behavior.

The source content also weaves in storytelling: a narrative involving the “Malachim,” or angelic intermediaries, and references to “Quantum Hologram Prayer.” These details lend an air of mystique, but for practical users the important takeaway is that the program gives you scripts and steps. For example, one of the practices described involves choosing a quiet space, repeating a focused intention three times, and visualizing a specific outcome. This aligns with psychological concepts like visualization, goal priming, and ritual reinforcement.

From a consumer perspective, it’s helpful to separate the story elements from the actionable tools. If you resonate with mystical language, you may find the metaphors motivating. If not, you can strip away the narrative and treat Divine Dialogue as a short daily habit anchored in intention and spoken focus. Either way, the core mechanism is about dedicating a small, consistent window of time each day to reinforce priorities, clarify desires, and set a positive mental state.

Another feature worth noting is accessibility. Because Divine Dialogue requires only a few minutes, it is less demanding than many meditation programs or manifestation courses that ask for 20-30 minutes per session. That makes it approachable for busy professionals, parents, and students. It is also marketed as suitable for both atheists and religious individuals, positioning itself as a flexible system rather than a faith‑exclusive ritual. This inclusivity is part of its appeal.

Still, the program should be viewed realistically. While rituals can improve focus, mood, and motivation, there is no guarantee that speaking a phrase will produce immediate external results like money or relationships. The most reasonable interpretation is that Divine Dialogue can serve as a catalyst-a tool to align mindset, reduce distraction, and encourage consistent action. Those benefits are worthwhile on their own, even without the extraordinary claims.

In short, Divine Dialogue is best understood as a hybrid of guided prayer and mindset coaching, packaged in digital lessons and daily exercises. If practiced consistently, it may enhance clarity and motivation. If approached expecting instant miracles, it may disappoint. The value lies in how you use it.

    Explore How Divine Dialogue Works

    Ingredient Breakdown

Unlike a supplement with a physical label, Divine Dialogue is a digital program. Instead of vitamins or herbal extracts, its “ingredients” are features: structured rituals, short lessons, and digital content designed to support consistency. Understanding these components helps clarify what you are actually buying and how to evaluate the program against alternatives.

    Core Features Described:

    • Introductory Module: Outlines the “Secret of Prayer” and sets expectations for how the program is intended to be used. This functions like orientation before you begin daily practice.

    • 5‑Minute Dream Life Video: A concise exercise meant to show that even a small daily ritual can shift focus. For many users, this is the foundation of the system.

    • Seven Keys Series: Seven videos that each dive deeper into what makes prayers or intentions “effective.” While metaphysical explanations are used, the practical takeaway is building consistent habits, clearing negative associations, and reinforcing focus.

    • Mindset Reset Sessions: Content aimed at reframing prior beliefs about prayer or intention, replacing unhelpful patterns with affirming scripts.

    • Supplemental Guidance: Lessons on tracking progress, recognizing “scientific” or measurable outcomes, and cultivating humility and gratitude alongside success.

    Delivery Format

100% digital. Once purchased, customers gain access through a member’s area. There is no shipping or physical component, which means you can begin immediately. This format also allows updates, though it depends on whether the publisher actively adds or revises content.

    Expected Use Cases

The features are marketed as versatile: they can be applied to financial goals, relationship intentions, energy and vitality, better sleep, emotional resilience, and even fertility or chronic stress. It is important to recognize that these are aspirational use cases-results depend on individual engagement and context.

    Label/Verification Disclaimer

Just as supplement reviewers advise checking labels and third-party testing, digital programs require similar caution. Always confirm exactly what modules, lessons, or bonuses are included at the time of purchase, because publishers may change or rename features over time. Treat “ingredient breakdowns” as a snapshot, not a permanent guarantee.

    Why This Matters

A clear feature breakdown helps potential buyers avoid disappointment. Many complaints in the self-help and manifestation market stem from vague expectations. Knowing that Divine Dialogue consists primarily of videos, scripts, and daily practices allows you to evaluate whether that matches what you need-or if you prefer a different style of guidance (apps, coaching, or written manuals).

Pros and Cons of Divine Dialogue

When it comes to any spiritual or manifestation-based program, potential users want to weigh the positives against the negatives before committing. Reviews and complaints about Divine Dialogue reveal both sides of the coin, and in the interest of transparency, here’s a balanced assessment based on user experiences, program details, and typical consumer concerns.

    The Pros of Divine Dialogue

    1. Accessible to All Backgrounds: One of the standout features of Divine Dialogue is that it claims to work for anyone regardless of their spiritual or religious background. Whether you identify as a Christian, Buddhist, atheist, or simply “spiritual but not religious,” the system is positioned as universal. This inclusivity has been noted by reviewers as refreshing because it removes the sense of needing to belong to a specific faith community.

    2. Simple and Structured Practice: The core practice reportedly takes only a few minutes a day, which makes it less intimidating compared to longer meditation or manifestation rituals. Busy individuals appreciate that they don’t have to overhaul their schedule to integrate the technique. The structured guidance, including video modules and step-by-step processes, makes it easy for beginners to follow.

    3. Stories of Rapid Results: A major appeal is the numerous testimonials describing noticeable shifts in life circumstances-financial improvements, relationship breakthroughs, or enhanced peace of mind-sometimes within days. While outcomes differ widely, these stories fuel curiosity and motivate many to try the system themselves.

    4. Affordability Compared to Coaching: According to the program’s materials, the full Divine Dialogue package is priced at $39, a fraction of the cost of one-on-one coaching sessions or other high-ticket manifestation courses. This low entry point is considered a pro by budget-conscious consumers who still want access to structured spiritual tools.

    5. Money-Back Guarantee: Another benefit often highlighted is the 365-day refund policy. This full-year guarantee provides a layer of safety for hesitant buyers, reassuring them that they can test the program without long-term financial risk.

    The Cons of Divine Dialogue

    1. Extraordinary Claims Without Peer-Reviewed Evidence: Critics point out that while the program references scientific terms like quantum physics and parallel universes, it does not provide peer-reviewed studies validating its specific prayer techniques. Skeptics consider this a red flag, classifying the claims as pseudoscience. This disconnect between marketing promises and traditional science remains one of the biggest criticisms.

    2. Over-reliance on Testimonials: Much of the program’s credibility rests on anecdotal stories and personal accounts. While these can be inspiring, they don’t guarantee that new users will experience the same results. Complaints online sometimes revolve around expectations not being met as dramatically as advertised.

    3. Possible Misalignment with Traditional Religion: Some religious consumers have voiced discomfort with the blending of prayer, quantum concepts, and manifestation principles. Certain reviewers argue that it may conflict with doctrinal teachings, especially in conservative faith contexts.

    4. No Physical Materials: The course is fully digital, which can be inconvenient for individuals who prefer physical books or guides they can reference offline. While the digital nature ensures instant access, some see the lack of tangible materials as a drawback.

    5. Potential for Misinterpreted Expectations: The marketing language occasionally suggests life-changing results in very short timeframes. This can set unrealistic expectations. A number of complaints come from users who felt let down when major changes did not occur immediately, even though the fine print emphasizes results may vary.

    Conclusion of Pros vs Cons

Overall, Divine Dialogue presents a mix of promising features-accessibility, ease of practice, affordability, and inspiring testimonials-balanced against potential drawbacks such as skepticism about scientific claims, reliance on personal stories, and occasional misalignment with traditional religious teachings. The decision ultimately depends on whether a consumer is open to experimental spiritual practices and willing to test them with realistic expectations.

The Biggest Complaints About Divine Dialogue

While many testimonials about Divine Dialogue lean positive, no program is without its share of criticism. Examining complaints from verified customers and skeptical reviewers provides essential balance and helps potential buyers make an informed decision. Below, we outline the most common grievances associated with Divine Dialogue, alongside factual responses where applicable.

    1. Shipping and Access Concerns

Unlike traditional products, Divine Dialogue is a 100% digital program. Some customers reported initial confusion, expecting physical materials or printed guides. This occasionally led to complaints about “not receiving the product.” In reality, the course is delivered instantly through online access after purchase. The lesson here is that buyers must be aware upfront that no physical shipment will arrive; access requires a reliable internet connection.

    2. Refund Policy Frustrations

The program advertises a 365-day money-back guarantee, which sounds generous. However, a few reviewers have complained about delays in processing refunds or confusion about the proper procedure. It is important to note that the official materials specify refunds must be requested through the email address in the member’s area, and ClickBank (the payment processor) ultimately manages these transactions. Complaints here highlight the need for clearer instructions and faster customer support responses.

    3. Overhyped Expectations

One of the most recurring criticisms is that Divine Dialogue’s marketing suggests immediate and dramatic results. Some users entered the program expecting overnight financial windfalls, miraculous healings, or instant soulmate connections. When changes didn’t manifest within days, frustration led to complaints. While the course materials do encourage patience and consistent practice, the promotional tone may contribute to inflated expectations.

    4. Pseudoscience Accusations

Skeptics frequently point out that Divine Dialogue incorporates terms like “quantum physics” and “parallel universes” without offering peer-reviewed scientific validation. This has led to accusations that the program oversells itself by associating with science in ways many academics would reject. For scientifically minded consumers, this lack of empirical evidence is a primary complaint and a barrier to trust.

    5. Religious Compatibility Issues

Some individuals raised concerns about whether Divine Dialogue aligns with their faith traditions. While marketed as universal, critics from conservative Christian, Jewish, or Muslim backgrounds sometimes view the blending of manifestation techniques and prayer as incompatible or even heretical. This can lead to rejection of the system on theological grounds rather than its practical outcomes.

    6. Customer Service Responsiveness

Though not widespread, a handful of complaints mention slow responses from customer support when dealing with login issues, billing questions, or refund requests. Given the spiritual and personal nature of the program, delays in communication can frustrate buyers who are already skeptical.

    7. Lack of Long-Term Data

Finally, critics point out that most testimonials highlight short-term wins-immediate shifts in luck, relationships, or mood-but there is less evidence about long-term, sustained transformation. Without multi-year studies or broad independent reviews, some consumers feel cautious about investing, even at a low entry price.

    Balanced Perspective on Complaints

Complaints about Divine Dialogue often center around customer experience, expectations management, and philosophical disagreements. While the program does provide a low-cost entry point and a generous refund window, consumers should be mindful of the limitations: results vary, compatibility with faith traditions is subjective, and scientific validation is lacking. Transparency about these concerns can prevent disappointment and help buyers approach the program with realistic expectations.

Positive Reviews: Why Customers Like Divine Dialogue

Despite the complaints and skepticism, many users report highly positive experiences with Divine Dialogue. These reviews often highlight not only personal transformations but also the sense of empowerment that comes from having a simple, structured practice for prayer or manifestation. By looking at what satisfied customers say, we can better understand why the program has generated attention across social platforms and in spiritual communities.

    1. Accessible Language and Simple Practice

Many reviews praise Divine Dialogue for stripping away complex religious jargon or overly mystical explanations. Instead, it presents short, repeatable prayer structures that take just minutes a day. Customers note that this accessibility makes it easy to integrate into daily routines without requiring advanced training or prior spiritual experience.

    2. Reported Breakthroughs in Daily Life

Numerous testimonials describe tangible improvements: unexpected financial windfalls, reconciliations in relationships, or enhanced energy and focus. On Reddit threads, for example, users have mentioned small but meaningful synchronicities-like running into an old friend, landing a freelance project, or enjoying improved sleep quality-soon after starting the program. These modest but uplifting shifts encourage people to continue practicing.

    3. Emotional and Mental Benefits

Beyond external results, many users describe internal transformations. Positive reviews frequently mention reduced stress, a stronger sense of optimism, and heightened mental clarity. For some, this creates a ripple effect: when stress levels go down, decision-making improves, and daily interactions become more fulfilling.

    4. Success Stories Shared on Social Media

TikTok and YouTube creators have begun experimenting with Divine Dialogue, documenting their experiences in short-form video content. The transparency of these firsthand accounts adds credibility for some viewers. Several influencers highlight that the program’s prayers feel more like guided affirmations or mantras-something they find motivating and easy to stick with.

    5. Inspiring Case Studies

On personal blogs and podcasts, reviewers often share deeper stories. One case involved a woman who reported using Divine Dialogue to overcome insomnia after years of poor sleep. Another described newfound confidence that helped them pursue a business idea they had delayed for years. While these stories are anecdotal, they illustrate why so many people feel enthusiastic about sharing their positive outcomes.

    6. Affordability and Perceived Value

A recurring theme among satisfied customers is the program’s low cost compared to the perceived benefits. At $39, many say it feels like a low-risk investment in personal growth, especially when weighed against more expensive self-help or manifestation coaching programs.

    7. Community Appeal

Some reviews mention that Divine Dialogue has sparked new conversations in online groups and spiritual circles. People enjoy discussing which prayers or methods worked for them, creating a sense of community and shared exploration. For a program that blends spirituality with self-help, this social dimension adds extra appeal.

    Balanced View of Positive Reviews

Although individual results vary and extraordinary claims should always be viewed critically, the volume of positive testimonials suggests that many users find value in Divine Dialogue. For some, the appeal lies in practical results; for others, it’s the emotional stability and hope the practice provides. This explains why, despite its detractors, the program continues to grow in popularity across different platforms.

See Why Customers Recommend Divine Dialogue

Is Divine Dialogue Legit or a Scam?

When it comes to spiritual and manifestation programs, one of the biggest questions potential buyers have is simple: Is this legit, or is it just another online scam? Addressing this upfront is critical, especially when reviews and complaints about Divine Dialogue are often mixed. To answer fairly, let’s evaluate both the legitimacy signals and the red flags associated with this program.

Legitimacy Signals That Support Divine Dialogue

    1. Clear Refund Policy: Divine Dialogue offers a 365-day money-back guarantee. While complaints exist about slow refund processing in some cases, the fact that such a long-term refund window exists at all suggests that the creators are confident in the product and willing to put financial accountability in writing.

    2. Transparent Pricing: The program is currently priced at $39, and this information is consistently displayed across the official sales page. Unlike predatory scams that add hidden fees or subscriptions, Divine Dialogue appears to use a straightforward one-time payment structure, with ClickBank as the payment processor-another signal of credibility since ClickBank enforces refund policies.

    3. Documented Testimonials and Case Studies: The official sales page features extensive testimonials, some of which include detailed stories. While these are not peer-reviewed scientific studies, they do provide anecdotal evidence of user satisfaction. The volume of testimonials helps demonstrate that real individuals have at least engaged with the program.

    4. Compliance Disclaimers: The inclusion of FTC disclosures, health disclaimers, and ClickBank statements indicates awareness of compliance rules. Scams often omit these legal safeguards; Divine Dialogue makes them visible.

    Potential Red Flags and Criticisms

    1. Extraordinary Claims Without Scientific Validation: Divine Dialogue frequently references concepts like quantum physics, parallel universes, and immediate results. These claims are not supported by peer-reviewed research, leading skeptics to label the program as pseudoscience. For some buyers, this lack of scientific backing is a dealbreaker.

    2. Overhyped Marketing Language: The sales materials sometimes suggest that users may experience instant wealth, miraculous healings, or guaranteed soulmate connections. While aspirational language is common in self-help niches, exaggerated promises can lead to disappointment if results don’t materialize as quickly or dramatically as implied.

    3. Mixed Compatibility With Faith Traditions: Although marketed as universal, some religious critics argue that Divine Dialogue conflicts with traditional teachings. For conservative or orthodox faith groups, this blend of spirituality and manifestation techniques can feel illegitimate.

    4. Reliance on Testimonials Over Data: The program relies heavily on anecdotal reviews, with little third-party or independent analysis. This makes it difficult for consumers to verify outcomes beyond personal accounts.

    Balanced Verdict: Legit or Scam?

Divine Dialogue does not fit the mold of an outright scam-it offers transparent pricing, a generous refund policy, and documented user experiences. However, it does lean heavily on extraordinary claims without the scientific evidence to back them up, and this makes it polarizing. For open-minded individuals seeking a spiritual or manifestation practice, it may feel legitimate and worthwhile. For skeptics looking for hard science and guaranteed results, it may come across as overhyped or misleading.

Ultimately, whether Divine Dialogue is “legit” depends on the expectations you bring into it. If approached as a spiritual experiment with realistic expectations, it may deliver personal benefits. If approached as a promise of instant miracles, disappointment is likely.

Learn the Facts About Divine Dialogue

    Expert Insights and Industry Research

To evaluate Divine Dialogue fairly, it’s important to step outside of marketing claims and look at how experts in related fields view programs like this. While Divine Dialogue itself has not been the subject of peer-reviewed research, we can consider perspectives from spiritual studies, consumer psychology, and the self-help industry to better understand its appeal and limitations.

    1. Insights From Spiritual Leaders

Many spiritual teachers emphasize the importance of intention-setting, meditation, and structured prayer as tools for personal growth. While not all endorse Divine Dialogue specifically, they agree that practices which focus attention and align inner belief systems often help people feel more centered, optimistic, and empowered. This aligns with user reviews that describe reduced stress and greater clarity of mind after practicing Divine Dialogue.

    2. Psychology of Belief and Expectancy Effects

Consumer psychology research demonstrates that belief in a practice can significantly influence outcomes. Known as the expectancy effect, when people believe something will help them, they often begin to notice improvements in their lives, even without direct scientific mechanisms. This suggests that the structure and ritual of Divine Dialogue may help amplify personal motivation and positive perception, regardless of its metaphysical claims.

    3. Industry Data on the Self-Help and Manifestation Market

According to industry reports, the global self-help market-including manifestation courses, coaching, and digital programs-has grown significantly in the last decade. The appeal of accessible, low-cost, self-directed programs like Divine Dialogue reflects a consumer demand for solutions that promise both empowerment and affordability. Compared to high-ticket coaching packages that can cost thousands, Divine Dialogue stands out for its lower entry price, which expands its reach.

    4. Affordability vs. Accessibility

One theme echoed in consumer research is that affordability plays a major role in program adoption. At $39, Divine Dialogue falls far below the average price point for manifestation or spiritual coaching, which often runs between $300-$2,000. Experts note that low-cost programs lower financial risk, making them more appealing to skeptical but curious consumers.

    5. Skepticism From Scientific Communities

On the other hand, physicists and psychologists often remain critical of programs that frame themselves in terms of quantum mechanics or neuroscience without peer-reviewed backing. From this perspective, Divine Dialogue is seen less as a scientific breakthrough and more as a spiritual or self-help ritual framed in scientific-sounding language. This helps explain why some reviewers accuse it of pseudoscience.

    6. Consumer Sentiment Trends

Industry research into self-help satisfaction suggests that while initial enthusiasm often drives sales, long-term satisfaction varies. Programs that offer clear structure, daily practices, and accountability tend to retain more positive user reviews. Divine Dialogue’s structured daily prayers and easy-to-follow system seem to align with these traits, explaining why many positive testimonials emphasize simplicity and consistency.

    Balanced Expert Perspective

Experts across spiritual, psychological, and consumer fields suggest that Divine Dialogue’s appeal lies less in its scientific claims and more in its ability to create consistent, empowering habits. While skeptics dismiss the quantum language as unverified, supporters emphasize that the psychological and spiritual benefits are still real for those who practice with intention. This positions Divine Dialogue as a hybrid product: part spiritual tool, part self-help framework, and part motivational system.

Comparing Divine Dialogue vs Alternatives in 2025

When considering a program like Divine Dialogue, many consumers naturally want to compare it with alternatives on the market. The self-help, manifestation, and spiritual coaching industry is filled with options ranging from high-cost seminars to downloadable PDFs. To make a balanced decision, it helps to evaluate Divine Dialogue alongside its peers in terms of cost, transparency, cultural presence, and consumer trust.

    1. Divine Dialogue vs. Law of Attraction Courses

The most obvious comparison is with Law of Attraction programs, many of which gained mainstream attention through The Secret and related media. While both emphasize intention, belief, and manifestation, Divine Dialogue positions itself as a structured prayer system rather than purely visualization. Supporters argue that the use of spoken words in Divine Dialogue feels more tangible than simply “thinking positively.” Critics, however, note that both approaches face the same challenges of unverifiable scientific claims.

    2. Divine Dialogue vs. Meditation and Mindfulness Apps

Apps like Calm or Headspace provide guided meditations for stress relief, focus, and better sleep. Unlike Divine Dialogue, they don’t promise wealth, soulmates, or rapid external change. Instead, they emphasize mental health and emotional balance. For skeptics, meditation apps may feel more credible; for seekers of tangible, life-changing results, Divine Dialogue’s bold promises stand out as more aspirational.

    3. Divine Dialogue vs. Coaching and Workshops

Manifestation and spiritual coaching programs can cost anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars. These often include live sessions, group calls, or retreats. Divine Dialogue offers similar concepts-structured prayers, daily rituals, mindset reframing-but at a fraction of the cost ($39). The trade-off is that it lacks direct community accountability or personalized coaching, which some consumers find motivating.

    4. Divine Dialogue vs. Traditional Religious Practices

For many, prayer within religious traditions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, etc.) already provides a framework for asking, reflecting, and finding peace. The difference is that Divine Dialogue frames prayer as a tool for immediate, personal results-emphasizing outcomes like money, health, or relationships-whereas traditional prayer often emphasizes surrender, gratitude, and alignment with divine will. This makes Divine Dialogue attractive to those who want results-driven spirituality but controversial among religious purists.

    5. Divine Dialogue vs. Manifestation Journals and Affirmation Programs

Another common alternative is the use of manifestation journals or affirmations. These tools focus on writing or repeating empowering statements daily. Divine Dialogue’s difference is that it offers a guided, pre-structured approach instead of requiring users to create their own affirmations. For some, this guidance removes the guesswork; for others, it feels limiting compared to self-directed practices.

    6. Transparency and Refunds Compared

One area where Divine Dialogue compares favorably is in its refund policy. Many manifestation programs are non-refundable or limit refunds to 30 days. Divine Dialogue’s 365-day guarantee is unusually generous, helping it stand out in an industry where buyers often feel locked in after purchase.

    Balanced Comparison Verdict

Compared to alternatives, Divine Dialogue’s biggest strengths are affordability, structure, and its clear refund policy. Its biggest weaknesses are its reliance on bold promises and lack of independent scientific validation. For consumers seeking a low-risk, structured entry into manifestation practices, it may be appealing. For those who want evidence-backed results or community accountability, alternatives like coaching programs or meditation apps may feel more reliable.

Pricing, Refund Policy, and Where to Buy

One of the most practical concerns for any consumer exploring Divine Dialogue is cost. Pricing transparency and refund accessibility are critical factors in whether a program like this feels trustworthy. Here’s a detailed look at what buyers can expect when it comes to the financial side of Divine Dialogue.

    1. Official Pricing Structure

Divine Dialogue’s official website currently lists the program for $39, down from previous advertised prices of $97 and $170. This discount is presented as a limited-time offer, though such pricing strategies are common in the digital product world. Regardless of the marketing language, $39 remains the entry price as of 2025.

Pricing Disclaimer: Always check the official website for the most current pricing and promotions, as they may change without notice.

    2. Value for Money

Compared to traditional coaching, manifestation seminars, or high-ticket spiritual courses-which can run anywhere from $500 to several thousand dollars-the $39 price point positions Divine Dialogue as one of the most affordable options in the manifestation niche. Many positive reviews highlight that the low cost made it easy to take a risk on the program without significant financial strain.

    3. Refund Policy and Consumer Protection

A standout feature of Divine Dialogue is its 365-day money-back guarantee. Buyers who are not satisfied for any reason can request a refund by contacting the support email provided in the member’s area. Refunds are processed through ClickBank, a reputable digital retailer known for enforcing refund compliance.

Some complaints online mention delays in receiving refunds, but overall, the extended guarantee period is much longer than the typical 30- or 60-day window offered by similar products.

    4. Where to Buy Divine Dialogue

The program is exclusively available through the official website: Visit the Official Divine Dialogue Website

Because of the rise in counterfeit or unauthorized resellers, it is strongly advised to avoid purchasing from third-party marketplaces like eBay, Amazon, or unverified websites. Buying direct ensures access to the latest version of the program, the proper refund guarantee, and official customer support.

    5. Digital-Only Access

It’s important to note that Divine Dialogue is a 100% digital program. No physical books, DVDs, or printed guides are shipped. Once purchased, access is granted via an online member’s area. While this ensures instant delivery, some buyers accustomed to physical materials have expressed disappointment. Being aware of this in advance prevents confusion.

Balanced Verdict on Pricing and Refunds

At $39, Divine Dialogue offers an unusually affordable entry into the manifestation and spiritual self-help market. The refund policy provides a safety net, though refund delays are a possibility. Buyers should also remain cautious of third-party sellers and ensure they purchase through the official site for full protection.

    Safety, Risks, and Responsible Use

Spiritual and manifestation programs often raise questions about safety, responsibility, and potential risks. While Divine Dialogue is not a physical supplement or medical treatment, it still requires a thoughtful approach. The way individuals engage with the practice can determine whether the program is empowering or disappointing. Here’s what potential users should keep in mind.

    1. Safety in Spiritual Practice

From a general standpoint, Divine Dialogue is safe to use. The practice involves structured prayers, affirmations, and mindset exercises. Unlike physical interventions, there are no direct health risks. However, users should approach it as a complementary practice rather than a substitute for medical, financial, or therapeutic guidance.

Disclaimer: Divine Dialogue is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure medical or psychological conditions. Anyone facing serious health or mental health concerns should consult a qualified professional.

    2. Risks of Unrealistic Expectations

The biggest risk lies in expectation management. Some buyers may approach Divine Dialogue as a guaranteed shortcut to wealth, relationships, or healing. When results do not arrive as quickly or dramatically as hoped, disappointment can lead to negative reviews or financial regret. For responsible use, consumers should view it as a spiritual experiment or personal development tool rather than a promise of instant miracles.

    3. Responsible Financial Decisions

While the $39 price point is relatively low, users should avoid investing in multiple spiritual programs at once with the hope of solving life’s challenges instantly. Responsible use means treating Divine Dialogue as one potential tool among many-similar to meditation apps, journaling, or therapy-and not as the sole solution to deep-seated issues.

    4. Compatibility With Religious Beliefs

For some, Divine Dialogue may feel like a supplement to their existing faith practices. For others, it may feel incompatible or even contradictory. Responsible use means being mindful of how the program aligns-or conflicts-with personal religious or philosophical values. It is advisable for religious individuals to consult trusted spiritual leaders if they have concerns.

    5. Emotional and Psychological Wellbeing

Practices that encourage daily reflection and positive focus can be uplifting. However, individuals with severe mental health challenges should be cautious. While Divine Dialogue may provide emotional comfort, it should never replace professional therapy or psychiatric care. In some cases, relying solely on spiritual practices without professional help could delay necessary treatment.

    6. Ethical Use of Practices

Finally, responsible use also involves ethical intention-setting. The program itself cautions against using prayer to harm others or manipulate situations unfairly. Ethical engagement ensures that spiritual practices contribute to positive, constructive outcomes rather than negative consequences.

    Balanced Safety Verdict

Divine Dialogue appears safe as a spiritual and self-help practice, with the main risks tied to unrealistic expectations, religious compatibility, and overreliance on it for serious life challenges. Approached responsibly-with realistic goals, ethical intent, and support from professionals where needed-it may serve as a positive daily ritual for those open to it.

Learn How to Use Divine Dialogue Responsibly

    User Testimonials and Case Studies

One of the strongest appeals of Divine Dialogue is the volume of testimonials and personal stories shared by users. While these accounts are anecdotal and not a guarantee of results, they provide insight into the diverse ways people apply the program in their lives. To illustrate the range of experiences, here are expanded case studies and representative testimonials from different types of users.

    1. The Skeptic Turned Believer

Mace, a self-described atheist and skeptic, initially dismissed Divine Dialogue as “woo woo.” However, after seeing his wife’s positive transformation, he decided to test it. His testimonial describes small but meaningful synchronicities, such as reconnecting with an old friend and seeing his son excel in sports, which he attributed to using the prayers. While he admits these events could be coincidences, the timing convinced him otherwise. His story represents those who approach the program reluctantly but find value in unexpected ways.

    2. The Healing Seeker

Lisa T., who struggled with insomnia and disappointment in traditional prayer practices, reported profound improvements after two weeks of Divine Dialogue. She highlighted the clarity of the instructions and the simplicity of the 10-word prayers as game-changing. Lisa’s experience demonstrates the program’s appeal to those who feel let down by conventional spiritual practices and are looking for fresh approaches.

    3. The Financial Turnaround

Some users highlight financial improvements as their primary success story. One customer described receiving an unexpected tax refund check soon after beginning the practice, while others mention feeling more confident in business negotiations or seeing new job opportunities. These accounts emphasize the role of Divine Dialogue as a confidence-building tool that may indirectly lead to improved financial outcomes.

    4. The Relationship Builder

Several testimonials emphasize the impact on relationships. One user described meeting their future spouse shortly after beginning the program, attributing the encounter to Divine Dialogue’s focus on intention-setting. Others highlight improved communication and reduced conflict with existing partners, suggesting the program helps foster a more mindful, positive approach to relationships.

    5. The Health and Energy Booster

Some case studies describe improvements in perceived health and vitality. Users report better sleep, reduced stress, and increased daily energy. One man in his 40s claimed that consistent practice gave him the “mental sharpness of his 20s,” enabling him to focus more effectively at work. While these outcomes are subjective, they highlight the psychological benefits users associate with the program.

    6. Diverse Backgrounds, Shared Enthusiasm

Testimonials come from people of various backgrounds-religious, spiritual, and secular. This diversity underscores Divine Dialogue’s broad appeal, particularly to those seeking non-denominational tools for self-improvement. Whether from social media platforms like TikTok or personal blogs, these reviews often share a common theme: empowerment through a structured daily ritual.

    Balanced Perspective on Testimonials

It’s essential to note that testimonials reflect individual experiences and are not predictive of universal results. Some users describe profound shifts, while others report only subtle changes. Nonetheless, the variety of stories demonstrates how different people apply Divine Dialogue to their personal lives, often with positive outcomes that reinforce their decision to continue.

Bonus Tips: How to Avoid Divine Dialogue Complaints

While Divine Dialogue offers a structured spiritual practice and a generous refund policy, many of the complaints associated with it come from confusion, mismatched expectations, or avoidable issues. By taking a few precautionary steps, prospective buyers can minimize frustrations and ensure a smoother experience.

Final Verdict: Should You Try Divine Dialogue in 2025?

After examining reviews, complaints, testimonials, and expert insights, the big question remains: is Divine Dialogue worth trying in 2025? Like many programs in the manifestation and spiritual self-help space, the answer depends heavily on individual expectations, goals, and worldview. Here’s a balanced recap to help you decide.

    The Pros in Review

    • Accessible and simple: The program offers structured daily practices that can be integrated into any schedule.

    • Inclusive: It is designed to be non-denominational, appealing to people of diverse spiritual and secular backgrounds.

    • Affordable: At $39, Divine Dialogue costs significantly less than coaching or seminars.

    • Refund protection: A 365-day money-back guarantee reduces financial risk.

    • Positive user stories: Many testimonials describe improved clarity, peace of mind, and meaningful life shifts.

    The Cons in Review

    • Extraordinary claims: References to quantum physics and instant miracles lack scientific validation.

    • Inflated expectations: Marketing language sometimes promises results faster than most users will experience.

    • Mixed religious compatibility: Some faith groups may find its blending of spiritual and manifestation practices problematic.

    • Digital-only delivery: No physical books or guides are included, which some users find disappointing.

    • Reliance on anecdotal evidence: Testimonials are powerful but not a substitute for objective research.

    Who Might Benefit Most

Divine Dialogue may be a good fit for individuals who:

    • Enjoy experimenting with manifestation, prayer, or intention-setting tools.

    • Want a structured daily ritual that doesn’t require hours of meditation or journaling.

    • Appreciate affordable, low-risk entry points into personal growth programs.

    • Are open to spiritual frameworks outside traditional religious structures.

    Who Should Approach With Caution

On the other hand, Divine Dialogue may not be ideal for:

    • Skeptics who demand peer-reviewed evidence for spiritual practices.

    • Consumers expecting instant financial or relationship transformations.

    • Individuals deeply committed to religious traditions that discourage alternative spiritual frameworks.

    • Those facing major health, financial, or psychological issues who might rely on it as a substitute for professional help.

    Balanced Final Verdict

Divine Dialogue is neither a scam nor a miracle cure-it is a structured spiritual and manifestation program with both benefits and limitations. Its affordability and refund guarantee make it relatively low-risk, while its bold claims and reliance on anecdotal evidence mean results are far from guaranteed. For those open to experimenting with new spiritual practices, it may provide meaningful benefits. For skeptics or those seeking hard scientific proof, disappointment is more likely.

Ultimately, whether Divine Dialogue is “worth it” depends on your mindset. If approached as a spiritual tool for exploration rather than a guaranteed solution, it can offer value in 2025.

Hina Khan on how to escape habits that get in the way of success – MoneySense

    Who are your money heroes?

My money hero is my dear friend Bob Proctor. I met him in 2014, and—because we lived in the same city—we became friends. He became one of my greatest mentors. The celebrated self-help author and lecturer, who had only one month of high-school education, taught me so much about money. I understood what money truly is, the law of compensation and so much more.

The law of compensation has three parts: the need for what you do, your ability to do it and the difficulty there is in replacing you. The part that an individual needs to focus on is the second part: your ability to do it, and getting better at what you do. This is why I tell people it is important to get your reps in. I am forever learning and growing and getting more effective at what I do.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I have changed my relationship to time and I don’t think of having “free time.” I think in terms of activities and being present. For example, I love writing on the weekend. Some may look at that and say I should not be working on the weekend. But for me, it doesn’t feel like that. It is simply time. We all get the same amount, and it can’t be managed. We can manage our activities, and that is what I focus on. I have a lot of space in my calendar that might be considered free time but I don’t look at it that way. So, I have no need to fill it.

Perhaps it is like this: All of my time is free time. I have the freedom to choose how I will spend the time.

If money were no object, what would you be doing right now?

I am so grateful to say I would be doing exactly what I am doing now. Every week, Monday to Friday, I run The Rise calls. These calls are from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. EST. We start with writing our goal and then some teaching. These calls create a peak state for my clients, which they then carry with them throughout the day.

When I talk about a peak state, I mean they are connected to their goal and what they want to create. It is not about working hard; it is the opposite. They are focused to they can create their day based on the clarity of their goal and it fuels them for the day. They have order in their mind. They are not starting the day in a reactive state.

I often say my clients get more done by 10 a.m. than most people do in an eight-hour day. When you control your mornings, you control your day. And that is one of the reasons our clients are incredibly successful. Regardless of my finances, I would be setting my alarm to do these calls.

What was your first memory about money?

This is such a great question. I think my early memories around money were that it caused tension. It was a source of conflict in our home. I think that created a belief that money was not good, that it led to conflict, that it created complications and could damage relationships. The impact that had was in my revenue. Raising prices and receiving money used to be difficult for me. And that is not a great thing when you are an entrepreneur.

  • Paradigm Shifts: A Complete Change in Worldview

Paradigm Shifts: A Complete Change in Worldview

Discover the power of paradigm shifts in driving individual and societal transformation, from overcoming cognitive dissonance to fueling scientific revolutions.

When’s the last time you changed your mind about something?

Many people are stuck in their beliefs and worldview, especially once we reach a certain age. Our map of reality is shaped most by early life experiences, including lessons we’ve learned from parents, teachers, and friends.

A worldview can be hard to break out of on a purely psychological level.

Once we are set in a view, we seek new information that continues to confirm these beliefs by only looking at sources that already agree with us. When new information contradicts these beliefs, we can easily ignore it or distort it to keep our map of reality intact.

Accepting that we are wrong about something can be hurtful to our ego and pride, and in many ways our brains are designed to protect ourselves from this discomfort by simply ignoring contradictory information unless it has a real world effect on our lives. As Philip K. Dick once said, “Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.”

The average person isn’t primarily driven by a search for truth, they just need a map of reality that is good enough to navigate their lives effectively and not get themselves into too much trouble, which includes social pressures to conform to certain beliefs or stay silent about others.

People can go through radical changes in beliefs though. Young adults and teenagers may go through “phases” as they come-of-age, where they question what they’ve been taught, rebel against orthodoxy, and search for their own meaning or purpose in life. These transformative years can lead to paradigm shifts that last a lifetime, such as adherence to new political, religious, or philosophical ideologies. Many may still return to their old beliefs later in life, but with a fresh new perspective.

Learning about a new worldview, ideology, or philosophy doesn’t mean you need to adopt it – and it doesn’t necessarily lead to a paradigm shift. Often times learning about radically different belief systems can give us a firmer understanding of our current beliefs. There’s wisdom in learning about worldviews you find wrong, mistaken, or incorrect; at the very least, it will give you a better understanding of where other people are coming from.

Paradigm shifts aren’t just new or updated knowledge, they represent a complete change in your perspective that makes you see and interpret old knowledge in a different way.

This shift in perspective can be jolting and uncomfortable at first. We depend on worldviews to make sense of reality, so deep changes in perspective can often make reality feel more confusing or unstable at first.

We often need to re-evaluate old knowledge and experiences through a new lens, and re-integrate them into a new and better map of reality. This is a mental shift that can sometimes take months or years before it is fully developed.

    My Paradigm Shifts

My mind has changed a lot over the past decade, which hopefully is a sign that I’m learning and growing. When I first started this website over 15 years ago, my worldview was very different than what it is today.

A few ways my mindset has changed:

    • Less Individualistic – During my college years, I explored a lot of libertarian philosophy that emphasized the individual over the collective. This is a common starting point in many “self help” circles too, which have an ethos of “take responsibility” and “pull yourself up by your boot straps.” While I still believe strongly in individual responsibility and initiative, I’ve grown to recognize the “no man is an island” mantra and focus more on the importance of social support, community-mindedness, and asking for help. This understanding has led to changes in my political and economic views too.
    • Less Materialistic and Money-Focused – It’s a bit embarrassing looking back on it, but I used to want to be rich and famous. I think a lot of it is just part of America’s narcissistic culture, where everyone strives to become some type of celebrity. As I get older, I’ve discovered new core values that have helped me focus on the more important things in life. I’ve also learned that a lot of my drive for money was really a drive for independence, and those aren’t the same thing. A person can make a lot of money and be trapped in their career to sustain their luxurious lifestyle, but a person of more modest fortune, who can be happy with less, often has more independence because they can then focus on other things in life. That was a counter-intuitive idea for me that took awhile to process.
    • Focus on Social and Cultural Forces – When I was younger, and likely a product of my libertarian days, I used to focus more on the importance of economics rather than culture. Generally, I saw things like music, art, and film as just a peripheral aspect of society, but now I’m beginning to understand their central importance. Every culture reflects and propagates a certain set of values, and a culture that promotes harmful and destructive values will lead to a harmful and destructive society. When I look at today’s world, I see a lot of cultural forces going in the wrong direction. I’m not pro-censorship in anyway, but I find many aspects of our culture need to be analyzed, criticized, and abandoned if they are hurting the happiness and health of a people.

This is how my mindset has shifted over the years – and my mind will likely keep changing as long as I stay open to new information, new knowledge, and new experiences. At this point, most of my learning has happened outside of school and that’s a path I will continue on for the rest of my life.

    The Structure of Scientific Revolutions

One of the most popular discussions on the topic of paradigm shifts is Thomas Kuhn’s 1962 book
    The Structure of Scientific Revolutions.

Kuhn describes that scientific progress isn’t just an accumulation of facts, which he calls “normal science,” but also periods of “revolutionary science,” where anomalies are discovered that force scientists to look at a field in a completely new way.

Common examples of paradigm shifts in science include:

    • The Copernican Revolution in the 16th century, where there was a change from geocentrism (“earth is the center of the universe”) to heliocentrism (“sun is the center of the solar system”)
    • Newtonian Physics in the 17th century, where classical mechanics discovered by Isaac Newton replaced previous models of Aristotelian physics.
    • Darwin’s theory of evolution and natural selection in the 19th century, which changed how humans viewed themselves in relation to animals and nature.

Often there is initial resistance to accept new paradigms, which can go through heated periods of controversy and criticism among contemporary scientists and laymen.

However, once these new paradigms were adopted, they allowed for research and discoveries into new phenomenon which ultimately expanded the boundaries of science and learning.

New paradigms completely change how a scientific field is looked at. Thomas Kuhn used the example of the duck-rabbit optical illusion to demonstrate how new paradigms can change how we see old information:

    duck-rabbit optical illusion

A duck or rabbit? It depends on your perspective.

New paradigms can take awhile to be fully adopted. Old facts need to be looked at through a new lens. New books, research, studies, lectures, and textbooks need to be re-written from this new perspective, leading to a type of cognitive restructuring of society. The philosopher Immanuel Kant referred to the advancements of Greek mathematics and Newtonian physics as “revolutions in thinking,” and they take time to process.

Generally, new scientific paradigms are better than old ones because they have more explanatory power over understanding natural phenomenon and predicting future outcomes.

The best measure of scientific truth is its predictive power: if a new paradigm fails to better explain or predict a natural occurrence over a previous paradigm, then there’s no real point in replacing the old model (from a scientific perspective).

Paradigm Shifts: An Antidote to Cognitive Dissonance

Paradigm shifts are spurred on when new facts don’t fit into old worldviews. This leads to feelings of cognitive dissonance which is when someone is forced to hold two contradictory beliefs at the same time.

Often the only way to reconcile this disconnect between facts vs. experience is to find a completely new paradigm that accounts for all old and new knowledge. This may require recognizing wrong or mistaken beliefs from your past, or cultivating a worldview with more complexity and nuance.

Cognitive dissonance is a painful experience that most people choose to ignore or avoid. Many people double-down on wrong beliefs when they are passionately invested in them, which leads to excessive confirmation bias and conspiracy theories when beliefs continue to be held unchecked.

At the same time, cognitive dissonance can be a catalyst for change – it’s a signal that we need to adjust our understanding of reality. This can become a real avenue for transformative thinking as long as you are honest with yourself, seek out diverse sources of information, and open-minded enough to see things in a new light.

    Conclusion

Paradigm shifts are a part of learning and growing on both an individual and societal level. They are necessary for both radical self-improvement and radical scientific progress.

While it’s important not to “change your mind just for the sake of changing your mind,” honest searches for knowledge and truth inevitably come up against walls that require a paradigm shift to get over and move onto the next stage.

  • Have you stopped listening? Have all of us?

Have you stopped listening? Have all of us?

Most of what I’ve written here, I recently shared in my monthly note with my insider crew – my subscribers. About once a month, I send a personal note about what I’m thinking about and working on. This note had such a strong response that I thought it would be beneficial to share part of it on my blog, too.

It’s about listening. Or rather, being open to the idea that our minds are never really made up. Decisions, thoughts, and ideas are not, in fact, concrete.  We may also have differing opinions from one another, which is okay – just because we may not agree, it doesn’t mean we have to cast labels on each other.

What we think today isn’t set in stone. We may even find that the root of our suffering is actually stemming from thoughts and beliefs that don’t serve us – so we must be open to evolving.

Something I’ve been thinking a lot about recently, and have spoken in depth about during my classes with the Culinary Nutrition Expert Program, is confirmation bias. My objective in teaching this program is not to be the voice in everyone’s head. I don’t want anyone ever to do something because “This is what Meghan said”. Instead, I challenge my students to ask critical questions and seek out the answers, and learn to trust in their own wisdom and their own thinking.

Confirmation bias is the practice of seeking out and favouring information that confirms our existing beliefs. It effectively closes us off from seeking out, let alone assimilating, new information. We are more inclined to seek information that confirms what we already believe or supports our assumptions. We look for evidence to confirm what we think – this is easier and it ensures we’re right. (I have spoken about this before as it relates to creating magic in our lives.)

There are many ways this function of human nature is designed to be protective, but there are also times where it becomes self-limiting.

I’ve been reading a really great book called You’re Not Listening, What You’re Missing And Why It Matters by Kate Murphy. It has me thinking a lot about what kind of listening I am doing, and also if anyone is listening to anyone anymore, or just seeking confirmation. Basically, are we all just trying to be right?

Have we stopped listening because we’re all so focussed on being right?

We live in a time when most of our daily conversations are had via keyboards and screens, where social media is anything but social, and where opinions and beliefs are becoming stronger than ever as we experience greater levels of long-term chronic fear (and with that stress), shutting down the amygdala, the part of our brain responsible for critical thinking.

The result of this is that too quickly, rather than being able to have conversations, share ideas, get clarifications, respectfully disagree without making it personal (or taking it personally), or putting someone in a box and throwing an extreme label on that box, it has become the reflex to cast a judgement, make assumptions, delete, and move on. Or sometimes even throwing a hateful comment their way first, before moving on. (Being the recipient of these on a weekly basis, they’re not effective if the goal is for the recipient to actually care. A kind, respectful, human response goes a lot further.)

As such, we continue to fill our feeds and our lives only with the information and people that support our existing beliefs. This limits our own potential for growth.

    Are you listening?

We’ve stopped listening. And when we stop listening, we stop accepting new information into our awareness. We block the opportunity for our minds to be changed, our actions to be changed, or to accept that perhaps we have the same objective but different ideas on how to get there. We lose the opportunity to accept that maybe we’re not right. Maybe we have more to learn, and that’s okay.

There is power in conversation, in being able not just to hear but also to actively listen, share ideas, perceptions and experiences, and be okay with the fact that we’re not all going to agree, or that two differing ideas could both be right.

We’re all trying to find our way through the chaos and unknowns of life right now and to do so, we need less separation and more listening. We may need to respectfully disagree, but taking the time to understand different perspectives can go a long way.

With all the chaos out there, I’ve started meditating again and it has been hard. Really hard. Meditation and yoga and walking in silence and journaling and whatever else you do to calm your mind and process stress is super easy when you are not experiencing heightened levels of stress.

This is how I recognized that I needed to jump back into it. The first time I sat to listen to my breath and let my mantra come, I checked the time about 23,456 times in twenty minutes. It was excruciating, but I kept sitting. It’s the bubbling. Stress coming out can feel a lot like it does coming in. But I am committing to it.

The other thing I am working on doing more of is being in my kitchen and cooking. It has always been my go-to activity for stress relief but lately, it’s been all about just getting the next meal done. And so with my team functioning so well and I’m not as needed day-to-day, I can take the time to get back to creating.

Though both of these things feel like they are just for me, meditation benefits the meditator and everyone around that person, just as cooking does.

Is there something you’ve reconnected with in the last little while that has been a source of joy and calm for you? Do share!

It seems to me that if we can all reconnect with the sources of joy in our lives, we just might be able to remember who we are, our source, tune into that intuition and as a result, become more open to new thoughts, ideas, inspiration and each other.

Thank you for reading. Thank you for always being so open to listening.

Rumination vs. Savoring: The Neural Dynamics Between Positive and Negative Thinking – The Emotion Machine

Rumination is the cornerstone of depression and anxiety. It’s characterized by an excessive replaying of negative thoughts and memories. A new study finds rumination activates the same brain regions as savoring, or the replaying of positive thoughts. Can depressed people learn to use their brains’ natural abilities in a more constructive way?

  • Best of 2023: Recap, Articles, Worksheets, and the Future

Best of 2023: Recap, Articles, Worksheets, and the Future

An honest review of 2023, featuring stand-out articles, practical worksheets, and a preview of the near future at The Emotion Machine.

Another year is coming to an end. It’s time for my annual recap and roundup of best articles.

To start, I’ll say this year was a good year for me overall. Not excellent, not bad – but “good.” It was more turbulent than past years and I certainly had low moments, but I adapted quickly and made a couple major habit changes that are going to payoff big in the future.

Despite the chaos, I was remarkably consistent in my output this year. After a decade working on this site, creating new content is almost automatic for me. There’s no reason to assume I’ll be slowing down anytime soon, as new ideas and new projects are constantly coming to mind.

The most successful endeavor this year has been my addition of self-improvement worksheets.

Last year I pledged to make one new worksheet per month, so we already have a nice collection of 12 available going into the new year. These have received a lot of positive feedback so far and I’ll keep making new ones in 2024 (already have a long list of ideas).

I’ll share more on my goals for 2024 soon, but let’s first take a look at the best self-improvement content that was published at The Emotion Machine in 2023…

    Best Articles/Worksheets of 2023

    Near Future Plans

I haven’t yet worked on my goals timeline, an annual tradition I do at the beginning of every year, but I’ll give you a quick peak at my main work goals in the near future:

    • Worksheets – As mentioned, I will definitely continue making one new worksheet each month. They are easy evergreen content and I’ve received compliments on them. The “Daily Routine” PDF will be coming out mid-January 2024.
    • Coaching – I’m bringing this back. Took most of the year off to focus on website but I think coaching is one of my better and more rewarding strengths. I already set up a calendar for easy scheduling and updated my coaching page.
    • Podcasting – I have too many thoughts per day that could be turned into valuable content but never materialize anywhere. “Everyone has great ideas, but not everyone acts on them.” Just pressing the record button and letting my mind riff is easy content that I think people will find interesting. I just need to suck it up and do it. I already have a Soundcloud (with a lot of old content) that I just need to reactivate.
    • Literary Agent – This is new territory for me. I’ve been working closely with an upcoming author friend and we’ve been making plans on finishing her first manuscript and sending pitches to publishers. She just finished the rough draft last week, but I’m going to be working with her more closely on editing, feedback, and reaching out to publishers once we have things tidied up. I still need to do more research but it could be a good avenue for me. It plays on multiple strengths: 1) Understanding the creative process, 2) Motivating people to actually finish their projects, 3) Finding people who have talent and potential, 4) Rooting for other people’s success. It feels like a natural outgrowth of a lot of my past work with creative people (at music venues, art galleries, and coaching various writers, artists, musicians, and filmmakers).
    • Articles – This isn’t changing. I’ll still be publishing at least one new or updated article every week. These make up the backbone of the website and I have no shortage of ideas and no reason to stop writing them anytime soon. If you want me to write about a specific topic, just use the contact page and let me know. I have many interests but it’s easier for me to cater to what you guys want. Feedback makes the site better.

All in all I’m excited about 2024, and the ideas above feel like a perfect balance between “sticking with what works” vs. “trying new things.”

    Join Me In 2024

If you find this work valuable to your life and want more, join me and support me going into the new year.

My entire archive currently has over 850 articles covering a wide-range of subjects in psychology and self-improvement; and there’s plenty more to come in the future. I’m just getting started.

To be honest with you, some of my earlier articles may not have aged as well as others. When you consistently produce content over 14 years, you inevitably release some less-than-stellar pieces. It’s a part of the process – having both “winning streaks” and “losing streaks” is a universal theme in life.

Over the years, my beliefs, values, and interests have also shifted since I first started this site. There are things I wrote in the past that I don’t wholly agree with today. However, I choose to keep these old posts accessible because people often need different advice at various stages of their lives.

I bet that’s not the hottest sales pitch you’ve ever heard. At heart, I consider myself a teacher more than a salesman, and that means being sincere, honest, and truthful before everything else. If you’re looking for “one trick” to magically fix your life, you’re in the wrong place. I don’t have those – never found them.

All I can do is offer an array of tools, advice, and guidelines. You ultimately have to figure out what applies (or doesn’t) to your life. In truth, 80% of the content on this site may not interest you at all, but there’s that 20% that could be just what you need at this exact moment in your life.

What I can promise you is that I’m one of the most dedicated writers on self-improvement currently going. I’ve seen thousands of other “self help” sites rise and fall over the years, but I keep chugging away no matter what.

If you want to align with my commitment to happiness and well-being, then your first step is to join me.

Better yet, get a Yearly subscription, for two simple reasons: 1) You’re committing yourself to a year of self-improvement, and 2) It’s cheaper. I’m honestly saying this from a self-improvement perspective and not a sales one.

    Let’s Go…

  • 4 Japanese Concepts That Will Improve Your Well-Being

4 Japanese Concepts That Will Improve Your Well-Being

Embark on a journey to well-being with these four profound Japanese concepts: Ikigai for purpose, Moai for community, Hara Hachi Bu for mindful eating, and Kintsugi for resilience. Discover insights to a healthier and happier life in the modern world by embracing the ancient wisdom of Japanese culture.

Culture is a powerful force that influences the type of person we become. In the pursuit of well-being, different cultures can often teach us different lessons on what it means to live a good life.

First, what is culture? The American anthropologist Edward T. Hall created the “Cultural Iceberg” framework to help us analyze the many factors that determine what a culture is. The theory illustrates that only 10% of culture is what we see (language, diet, music, fashion), while 90% of culture is hidden from us (beliefs, values, norms, and expectations).

Here’s what the “Cultural Iceberg” looks like:

    cultural iceberg

Generally we see the culture we grew up in as the default mode of being. This includes how people dress, what people eat, and what music they listen to, but also deeper aspects of life such as beliefs, values, morality, and how people approach life from a broader perspective.

Culture, tradition, and social norms shape our map of reality, the choices we make, and how we navigate our world. If you’re raised in a society that only values materialistic goals like money, fame, or popularity, you’re naturally going to live a life in accordance with those values, especially if they go unquestioned.

When we explore new cultures through traveling, reading, or meeting new people, we learn that there are many different ways we can approach life and the way we were raised isn’t necessarily the only way to live.

One simplified but general way we can categorize different types of culture is Western vs. Eastern ways of thinking. Western cultures tend to be more individualistic, rational, and materialistic, while Eastern cultures tend to be more collectivist, holistic, and spiritual.

Keep in mind, these are broad categorizations. Every country and culture is different. This also isn’t a judgment of “right” or “wrong” ways of thinking, but rather observing different personality types on a cultural scale.

My experience from a Western perspective is that learning about various aspects of Eastern culture and philosophy (such as Buddhism, Taoism, or Confucianism) gave me a taste for different ways to look at the world and different perspectives on life that I otherwise wouldn’t have been exposed to.

One popular country to look at is Japan which has a rich history, deep cultural roots, and long-held traditions that have been passed down over multiple generations. In this article, we’re going to cover four powerful Japanese concepts that provide universal lessons on how to live a healthier and happier life. Each concept reveals core values and beliefs that shape the way many Japanese people live.

These powerful ideas include: Ikigai (“a reason for being”), Moai (“meeting for a common purpose”), Hara Hachi Bu (“belly 80% full”), and Kintsugi (“golden repair”). Now let’s dive deeper into each one!

    Ikigai

    a reason for being

The Japanese concept of “Ikigai” is about finding a purpose in life. It directly translates to “a reason for being,” and it’s often described as the intersection between what you love, what you are good at, and what the world needs.

Ikigai is a combination between intrinsic motivation (an activity you enjoy doing) and extrinsic rewards (an activity that creates value in the world and improves people’s lives). Psychology research has shown that ikigai is associated with elevated feelings of dedication, accomplishment, meaning, and fulfillment.

This is in contrast to a lot of other cultures that just see work as a means to a paycheck or higher income, rather than reframing work as something that serves a higher purpose, both to yourself and society as a whole.

Ikigai has been shown to benefit both physical and mental health. It can reduce stress and anxiety, which contributes to longer lives and less risk of cardiovascular disease and other ailments. In addition, ikigai is associated with greater resilience in the face of negative events. One interesting study found that ikigai helped people better cope with stress after an earthquake or natural disaster.

Here’s a visual of what constitutes ikigai:

    ikigai

If you can find activities that meet all of these requirements, then you’ve found your ikigai.

Discovering your ikigai can take time and patience though. It involves careful introspection, understanding your strengths, passions, and talents, and finding ways to use those powers to fulfill the needs of the world.

Once you find your ikigai, it’s important to align your daily activities with it if you want to build a more purposeful and meaningful life.

    Moai

    meeting for a common purpose

Human connection is vital for our well-being, and the Japanese practice of “Moai” emphasizes the strength of communal bonds.

Moai refers to a group of people who come together for a shared purpose, providing emotional, social, and even financial support. Often a moai includes family, friends, and neighbors within a local community. They will see each other frequently, talk and catch up on each other’s lives, and organize group activities such as game nights, fitness groups, music performances, or dance parties.

This tight sense of community provides an important sense of belonging. It also comes with physical benefits like healthier lifestyles, exercise, social connection, and financial support if someone finds themselves in a tough situation.

In today’s world, many people are suffering from loneliness and depression. One major cause of this is hyper individualism and atomistic lifestyles that no longer promote community values. Many Americans report having zero close friends and only 38% say they have “5 friends or more.” This is in stark contrast to the moai way of life which can often include 10-12+ lifelong friends.

While there’s plenty of research showing the physical and mental benefits of social support, one of the most common examples of moai can be found in Okinawa, Japan, which has been identified as a “blue zone.”

Blue zones are places around the world that are associated with better health and longevity. Often there are high numbers of centenarians in them (or people who have lived over 100). The recent Netflix documentary Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones by public health researcher Dan Buettner has a great episode dedicated to Okinawa that shows how the moais work there.

Many health professionals and experts are now claiming we are in a “loneliness epidemic,” with over 1 in 4 adults saying they feel socially isolated. This can have serious health consequences such as increased risk of anxiety, depression, heart disease, stroke, dementia, and overall shorter lifespans. The negative effects of loneliness have been compared to the effects of daily cigarette smoking.

As communities continue to decline and feelings of social alienation increase, the moai mentality is needed now more than ever.

    Hara Hachi Bu

    belly 80% full

In a culture often associated with healthy living and longevity, the Japanese concept of “Hara Hachi Bu” teaches us the art of mindful eating. Translated as “belly 80% full,” this practice encourages moderation in our meals.

Obesity is a growing problem around the entire world. Recent reports show that 39% of the global population in 2023 is obese or overweight, and this is a sharp increase from 23.9% in 2008. If this trend continues, researchers predict that over half of the global population will have obesity by 2035.

One factor in this rise in obesity is having abundant access to ultraprocessed foods, including the convenience of fast food and junk food. The modern diet is filled with supernormal foods that hijack our natural instincts for sugar, salts, and rich flavor, which is why many people end up over-eating during meals or late night binging.

The lesson of Hara Hachi Bu is more relevant now than ever. By reminding ourselves to only eat until we are 80% full, we encourage slower and more mindful eating. This lets you enjoy your meal more by paying attention to each bite and savoring it, rather than quickly moving from one bite to the next without fully appreciating it.

Many people eat unconsciously. Often it’s eating while watching TV/movies, checking their phones, scrolling social media, or socializing with friends. Their main focus is on one thing, while eating is just something happening in the background. These distractions can lead you to eat more than you otherwise would.

Slowing down your eating will lead to less consumption, better digestion, and improved body awareness of how you respond to certain foods, the best times of the day to eat (or not), and what it feels like to be “50% full” → “80% full” → “100% full” → “110% full.”

Adopting Hara Hachi Bu not only contributes to physical well-being by maintaining a healthy weight but also cultivates a mindful approach to eating that can lead to a stronger connection with the food we consume.

    Kintsugi

    golden repair

Derived from the Japanese words “kin” (golden) and “tsugi” (repair), Kintsugi is the art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum.

    Here’s what it looks like:

    kintsugi

Instead of hiding the cracks and flaws, the practice of kintsugi embraces the broken parts by highlighting them in gold. It celebrates its imperfections, while at the same time making them stronger and more beautiful.

Many find inspiration when applying this concept to their personal lives. It helps them to accept the challenges and obstacles they’ve had to face over the years – the physical, mental, and emotional battle scars – and see them as jumping points for growth and improvement.

No one’s life is perfect. We all suffer from weaknesses, flaws, insecurities, and vulnerabilities. Our instinct is to hide them, ignore them, or deny them, but the paradox is that when we accept them is when we actually become stronger.

Kintsugi promotes resilience, growth, and grit. It shows that no matter how many times you get broken, you can always repair yourself in gold.

    Conclusion

Each of these Japanese concepts – Ikigai, Moai, Hara Hachi Bu, and Kintsugi – offers a kernel of wisdom that we can all apply to our daily lives.

While these ideas are ancient, they are more relevant to modern living than ever before. Ikigai teaches us meaning and purpose, Moai teaches us social connection, Hara Hachi Bu teaches us mindful eating, and Kintsugi teaches us growth and resilience.

Which concept do you need to embrace the most right now?

  • Advanced Bodyweight Workout Circuit (Full Body Routine At Home) | Nerd Fitness

Advanced Bodyweight Workout Circuit (Full Body Routine At Home) | Nerd Fitness

Want to get strong but hate the gym?

    No problem!

With today’s Advanced Bodyweight Routine, you can burn fat, build muscle, and get a great workout in! All with no gym membership required!

It’s the kind of workout we build through our online coaching program. If you’re in a hurry, sign-up for our free weekly newsletter and we’ll send you PDFs of our “Work Out at Home” guides!

If you’re ready, click the sections below to get right into the action:

    Alright, let’s do this thang.

    The Advanced Bodyweight Workout

This is the Advanced Bodyweight Workout (Do 3 Circuits):

    • 10 One-Legged Squats – each side
    • 20 Bodyweight Squats
    • 20 Walking Lunges (10 each leg)
    • 20 Jump Step-Ups (10 each leg)
    • 10 Pull-Ups (or inverted bodyweight rows using your kitchen table)
    • 10 Dips – Bar Stools
    • 10 Chin-Ups (or inverted bodyweight rows with an underhand grip)
    • 10 Push-Ups
    • 30 Second Plank

See our section below on advanced bodyweight exercises to see how to do each of these movements!

I do use a door-frame pull-up bar in the video, but you can do table bodyweight rows (see the video below) if you can’t do a pull-up yet or if you don’t have a pull-up bar!

Another option is to do dowel rows, as we outline in The 5 Best Pull-up Alternatives:

This gif shows Jim doing a row on chairs

Lastly: this workout will have you sweating like a pig and leave you sore all over the next day.

If you’re just moving beyond the Beginner Bodyweight Workout for the first time, this workout might seem ridiculously difficult, which is fine.

The goal will be to go through as many circuits as you can without breaking form.

    “WHAT IS A ‘CIRCUIT’?”

As Coach Lauren describes in the video above, in a circuit routine you’ll do each exercise in succession without a break in between (if you’re able).

    • Once you’ve finished all exercises in the circuit, do it again.
    • If you’re still able after the 2nd run-through, go for a 3rd.
    • Because all of these exercises come one after another, you’re bound to get tired – that’s okay!

Our goal is to give you a full-body workout that leaves you panting.

“HOW LONG SHOULD A BODYWEIGHT WORKOUT LAST?”

Go at your own pace, but the above 3 circuits and your warm-up and cool-down will take you about 25-30 minutes.

And speaking of warming up and cooling down…

Before you start, do a WARM-UP

Don’t forget to warm up. You can run in place, jump rope, do a few push-ups, pedal on a stationary bike, jog up and down your stairs, etc. Since we are doing advanced movements here, the warm-up becomes even more critical.

Also, if you want to stretch and cool down after your workout, here’s a routine you can run through:

If you are following this bodyweight workout plan because you’re trying to get in great shape without needing a gym, download our free-guide: Strength Training 101: Everything You Need to KnowIt’ll provide an exact plan to follow for growing strong.

The 21 Best Advanced Bodyweight Exercises

This LEGO knows lifting himself up is a great advanced bodyweight exercise.

Let’s go through each movement in the Advanced Bodyweight Workout Circuit, so we can ensure you’re doing each move correctly!

    1) BODYWEIGHT SQUAT

Do a proper bodyweight squat to work out your legs

If you want even more instruction, here’s how to do a proper bodyweight squat:

    2) ASSISTED ONE LEGGED SQUAT

A small stool can help when you first start doing one legged squats!

    3) ONE-LEGGED SQUAT (PISTOL SQUAT)

The one legged "pistol" squat is a great advanced bodyweight movement.

    4) WALKING LUNGE

This gif shows the walking lunge, a great way to do bodyweight exercises in your own home!

    5) JUMP STEP-UPS

Jump step-ups are perfect bodyweight moves you can try on your stairs.

    6) ASSISTED PULL-UPS (WITH BAND)

Staci using a band for an assisted pull-up, a great exercise for a bodyweight circuit.

A resistance band is a great tool to help build strength for proper pull-ups. It’s part of our arsenal for getting your first pull-up.

    7) NEGATIVE PULL-UPS

Staci jumping up to do a negative pull-up., a great movement until you can bring regular pull-ups into your circuit.

If you don’t have a resistance band, you can do negative pull-ups instead. Jump and hold yourself above the bar, and then slowly, under control, lower yourself to the ‘starting position’ of a pull-up. Then repeat!

This is a great way to build up enough strength to eventually get your first pull-up.

    8) PULL-UP

A pull-up would be considered an advanced bodyweight movement, great for including in your at home training.

We have a full guide on proper pull-up form so you can hone your technique.

    9) CHIN-UPS

A chin-up is a pull-up, but with your hands facing towards you.

Much like a pull-up, but with your palms facing toward you.

Here’s a video going over proper pull-up and chin-up form:

If you can’t do pull-ups or chin-ups, you have another option…

    10) INVERTED BODYWEIGHT ROW (OVERHAND)

A bodyweight row like this is a great "pull" exercise you can while building up strength for pull-ups.

An inverted bodyweight row can be a great “pull” exercise if you can’t do a pull-up yet, or if you don’t have a proper pull-up bar nearby. Because a good sturdy table can be used for inverted rows:

    11) INVERTED BODYWEIGHT ROW (UNDERHAND)

A underhand inverted bodyweight row can be exchanged for a chin-up while you build up your strength.

    12) ASSISTED BODYWEIGHT DIPS

A resistance band is a great way to get started with this bodyweight exercise.

With a resistance band, you can start performing assisted dips. A great exercise while you build up strength for normal dips.

    13) BODYWEIGHT DIPS

Bodyweight dips are a great exercise to include in an advanced circuit.

    14) KNEE PUSH-UP

Knee push-ups like this are a great way to progress to a regular push-up!

    15) ELEVATED PUSH-UP

Do elevated push-ups to work up to regular push-ups

    16) REGULAR PUSH-UP

This gif shows Staci doing a push-up in perfect form.

We have a whole article on how to do a proper push-up, but we also cover it extensively in this 5-minute video:

    17) DECLINE PUSH-UPS

Decline push-ups like this are a great way to progress your bodyweight exercises.

    18) KNEE PLANK

If you can't do a normal plank, start with doing them on your knees until you can advance.

    19) PLANK

The plank is a great bodyweight exercise to engage your core muscles.

    20) SIDE PLANK

Doing a plank on your side is a great way to progressive this bodyweight movement.

    21) JUMPING JACKS

Jumping Jacks are a great cardiovascular bodyweight exercise

As I said earlier, this whole routine is scalable based on your ability. For example, here is a sample routine for somebody who has conquered the Beginner Bodyweight Workout but can’t do the full routine above:

    • 10 Bodyweight Squats
    • 10 Walking Lunges
    • 15 Jump Ups
    • 3 Assisted Pull-Ups (or 6 inverted bodyweight rows – overhand grip on table)
    • 8 Dips (or 10 decline push-ups if these are too tough)
    • 3 Assisted Chin-Ups (or 6 inverted bodyweight rows – underhand grip on table)
    • 10 Push-Ups
    • 30 Second Plank
    • 30 Jumping Jacks

“WHAT IF THE ADVANCED BODYWEIGHT WORKOUT IS TOO EASY FOR ME?”

Hm, well then, can you do 4 circuits instead of 3? Or have you tried a circuit that would make you worthy of a Spartan?

    • Your exact routine
    • How long it took you
    • Which exercises wore you out
    • Exactly how many reps you did

Then make sure you do more next time!

“HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO THE ADVANCED BODYWEIGHT WORKOUT?”

Do this routine 2-3 times a week, but never on consecutive days. It’s a message we really strike home in our guide, “How Often Should I Work Out?

You don’t build muscle when you’re exercising, you build muscle when you’re resting, so try not to do a strength training routine (of the same muscle groups) two days in a row.

  • Faucets in McCarthy’s district are running dry after years of drought. Constituents want him to do more | CNN Politics

Faucets in McCarthy’s district are running dry after years of drought. Constituents want him to do more | CNN Politics

    CNN
     —

Shortly after Benjamin Cuevas and his family moved into their new home three years ago in Tooleville, California, he realized something was horribly wrong.

In the middle of the day, the water pressure would drop completely. Cranking up both hot and cold could only coax a little drip out of the faucet.

Then there was the water itself, contaminated with chemicals from agriculture runoff and treated with so much chlorine that it turned his family’s black clothing gray in the wash. His daughter and her baby live in the house, and Cuevas’s wife only bathes her granddaughter in the bottled water they receive from the county for drinking.

Cuevas is not alone; the entire town of under 300 people faces the same water crisis. In many rural parts of the state, faucets and community wells are running dry after years of drought and heavy agriculture use pulls more water from the same groundwater residents use.

One local nonprofit told CNN that about 8,000 people in the San Joaquin Valley need thousands of gallons of hauled water just to keep their taps flowing – and that number is growing.

Benjamin Cuevas stands next to a town water tank in Tooleville.

Newly elected House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has represented Tooleville for the past decade – though the small town is just outside his newly redrawn congressional district. The Republican lawmaker has long represented Kern and Tulare counties, and his redrawn seat adds portions of Fresno County.

Throughout his tenure, this region of California has spent more time than any other part of the country in exceptional drought – the US Drought Monitor’s most severe category – a drought scientists say has been made more intense by human-caused climate change. Recent rainfall has put a dent in the region’s surface drought, though experts have told CNN it will do little to solve the ongoing groundwater shortage.

Tulare, Kern and Fresno counties have endured more than 200 weeks in exceptional drought over the past decade, according to Drought Monitor data.

Multiple people CNN spoke to for this story said McCarthy and his office don’t often engage on this issue in the district, especially compared with neighboring members of Congress. And they wish he would do more with his power in Washington – especially now that he holds the speaker’s gavel.

McCarthy proposed an amendment this past summer to set up a grant program to help connect small towns like Tooleville with larger cities that have better water systems. The measure passed the House but died in the Senate. But as more and more wells go dry, McCarthy has made a point to vote against other bills addressing climate change and drought, including the Inflation Reduction Act and the bipartisan infrastructure law.

“In my experience, he has never engaged with us on any of these kinds of emergencies,” said Jessi Snyder, the director of community development at local nonprofit Self-Help Enterprises, who focuses on getting hauled water to entire communities that have gone dry.

Cuevas moved to Tooleville three years ago.

In a statement to CNN, McCarthy’s office said he has been “a staunch advocate on water issues in the Central Valley and California” since he was first elected to the House. McCarthy has joined his colleagues to “introduce broad legislative solutions every Congress related to this topic since our water situation continues to worsen,” his spokesperson Brittany Martinez said.

But McCarthy does not mention climate change when talking about his district’s drought, and his office did not respond to questions from CNN about whether he believes climate change is playing a role. Instead, he often blames the drought on state mismanagement of water and has called for new and larger dams and reservoirs to be built to capture rainwater during wet years.

Water experts in California say that’s missing the new reality.

“Part of what’s happening now is the reality that there is no more new water,” said Peter Gleick, co-founder and senior fellow of California-based water nonprofit Pacific Institute. “The knee-jerk response of politicians has always been build another dam; find more water. There is no new reservoir that’s going to magically solve these problems. It’s now a question of managing demand.”

When a call comes in from yet another community whose well has run dry, it’s a race against time for the staff at Self-Help Enterprises.

The Visalia, California-based nonprofit has a self-imposed deadline of just 24 hours to drive out to the impacted community with emergency tanks to keep water flowing for showers, laundry and cleaning, as well as with five-gallon jugs of higher-quality water for drinking.

“The team goes all hands-on deck,” Tami McVay, Self-Help’s director of emergency services, told CNN. “Everybody knows what their role is, and they just go get it done. And we move forward to the next one.”

A tanker truck makes a water delivery in Tooleville.

Rick Jackpot Fernandez of Kyle Koontz Water Hauling hooks up a hose to one of the town's water storage tanks.

These days, there’s always a next one. Snyder said the summer of 2022 marked “a new level of crisis” as entire small communities of 80 to 100 homes started running out of water, in addition to individual homes.

“It’s been a real struggle because it’s hard to provide a backup source of water to a whole community instead of one household,” she said.

More than 1,400 wells were reported dry last year, according to the state of California, a 40% increase over the same period in 2021. Self-Help staff see this in person on the ground. New families are flowing into their hauled water program, but none are leaving. During the dry, warm-weather months, McVay estimates her nonprofit fields around 100 calls a day, dropping down to about 30 per week in the winter months.

The punishing multi-year drought is what Brad Rippey, a meteorologist at the US Department of Agriculture, calls California’s “latest misery.” California has spent eight of the last 11 years in drought, with the last three years being the driest such period on record, state officials said in October. Human-caused climate change – which is raising global temperatures and making much-needed rain and snow less frequent in the West – is contributing to the severity, Rippey said.

“The impacts are multiplying. You have these droughts piling on top of droughts with cumulative impacts,” including wildfires, he added.

To supplement the dwindling groundwater supply in Tooleville, officials in Tulare County and nonprofits like Self-Help deliver five-gallon water jugs to the residents for drinking and 16,000 gallons of hauled water into tanks for washing their clothes, doing dishes and taking showers.

Six five-gallon jugs of water are delivered to a resident's home in Tooleville.

There’s so much demand in the warm months for the hauled water that a 16,000-gallon delivery lasted some communities just a few hours before needing to be refilled, Snyder said.

“We literally cannot pump the water out of the tanker trucks fast enough to fill the storage tanks,” she added. “We can’t ever get ahead of it; physics is against us. It’s nuts and really stressful.”

California’s extreme heat wave this summer pushed water usage even higher as residents watered grass and farms pumped more for crops. In Tooleville, Cuevas watched as the orange and lemon trees in his yard withered and died. Outdoor watering restrictions meant he couldn’t save his trees, even as some of his neighbors flouted the restrictions with noticeably green lawns.

“Everything just perished,” Cuevas said. “It’s not a good feeling to see other people enjoying [the water], while you’re doing your part.”

Seeing the nearby Friant-Kern Canal every day – which carries melted snowpack water from Northern California to Central Valley farms – is a nagging reminder of what his family doesn’t have.

“It’s terrible,” Cuevas told CNN. “Just joking, I’d say I’ll go out there and put a hose [in it] running right back to my house.”

Tooleville resident Maria Olivera has lived in town since 1974.

    Olivera cooks with bottled water.

As Cuevas’s own trees died, commercial farms in the area were still producing – although their future is also uncertain. Farms are also having to drill deeper wells to irrigate orange groves and acres of thirsty pecan and pistachio trees.

With this rush on groundwater, shallow residential wells don’t stand a chance. In West Goshen, a small town that sits outside McCarthy’s district in Tulare County, resident Jesus Benitez told CNN he burned through three well pumps – costing $1,200 a piece – during the warmer months when his neighbor, a farmer who grows alfalfa and corn, started irrigating his crops.

“They’ve got the money to go every time deeper and deeper in the ground; we don’t have that luxury,” Benitez said.

Two town wells in nearby Seville nearly ran dry this summer, said Linda Gutierrez, a lifelong resident who sits on the town’s water board. Across the street from the town’s wells is a pistachio farm, and when they start irrigating, the groundwater level plummets, she said.

But she doesn’t blame the farmers. Like many who live in the area, her husband is a farm worker. There’s a lot of pride in the region’s far-reaching agriculture, and many feel it should be sustained.

“You can’t not have farmers because you need food, but we have to have water in order to survive,” Gutierrez said. “There’s a very tricky balance to establish. Right now, if they don’t irrigate, we have water, but also a year from now we have no food.”

A water usage notice is posted on a fence surrounding the Yettem-Seville water storage tanks.

As big of a societal problem as drought and water shortages are, they are also intensely personal. Self-Help’s McVay gets emotional when talking about school children in the area getting beat up because they don’t have clean clothes or ready access to a shower.

“They don’t have water in their homes to take baths, or brush their teeth, or have clean laundry, and they’re getting bullied,” she said. “Being made fun of because they’re taking baths at the local gas station bathroom. It’s not fair – the stress that it causes the parents because [they] start to feel like they’re failing as a parent.”

Multiple local and state elected officials and leaders of nonprofits focusing on water delivery in the San Joaquin Valley said McCarthy isn’t engaged enough on what they consider one of his district’s most dire crises.

McVay said outreach from McCarthy’s office on dry residential wells is “slim to none, and I am not saying that to discredit them at all.”

“I have had more conversations, more engagement and just more wanting to know how they can assist from Congressman Valadao and his office than probably any other on the federal side,” McVay added.

Snyder said Rep. David Valadao, a Republican representing neighboring Kings County as well as portions of Tulare and Kern, and his staff “will show up in a community at the time of a crisis” and are actively engaged on how they can support efforts to get people water.

Other members of Congress, including Democratic Rep. Jim Costa and Republican Connie Conway, who left office earlier this month, have also been more accessible and engaged on the issue, Snyder said.

    “Kevin McCarthy, no,” Snyder added.

While McCarthy is popular in his district and influential among California and Central Valley Republicans, California state Sen. Melissa Hurtado, a Democrat who represents parts of the San Joaquin Valley plagued by drought, told CNN there are concerns that McCarthy’s ambition for House speaker has superseded his district’s needs.

“He’s focused on that leadership position instead of actually working on issues to address the impacts of his district,” Hurtado told CNN. “Quietly, the word out there is it’s been a while that he’s actually delivered something for the region, given his focus on the leadership position. Maybe that’s part of his greater vision for helping this region out.”

McCarthy’s office did not respond to questions about how he’ll use his position as House speaker to address climate change-fueled droughts in California and around the nation. Nor did it respond to the critiques about his lack of engagement.

“The Leader has consistently worked in a bipartisan, bicameral fashion to deliver this life-giving resource for the families, agriculture producers and workers, and communities in the Central Valley and throughout California, and our Republican congressional delegation heavily relies on his steadfast leadership and decades of expertise when crafting their own pieces of water legislation,” McCarthy’s spokesperson Martinez told CNN in a statement. “When Democrats have held the majority, they time and time again blocked the progress and innovation of their House GOP colleagues.”

McCarthy delivers remarks to supporters alongside Ronna Romney McDaniel, Republican National Committee chair, and Rep. Tom Emmer on November 9.

In July, McCarthy spoke on the House floor about Tooleville’s plight, seeking to set up a federal grant program to help connect it and other small towns to larger cities’ water supply.

“In our district, the community of Tooleville has run out of water as the groundwater table drops and aging infrastructure fails or becomes obsolete,” McCarthy said at the time. “Tulare County advises me that if California’s droughts continue, more small and rural communities in our district with older infrastructure could meet the exact same fate.”

McCarthy’s measure authorized a grant program but didn’t contain any funding. And even though the bill passed the House, it died in the Senate, and it’s unclear whether it will come up again in the new Congress.

Connecting Tooleville’s water infrastructure with that of nearby Exeter has been a decadeslong pursuit that is finally close to happening thanks to a state mandate and funding. The project will mean more reliable and cleaner water for residents like Cuevas. But it’s expected to take eight years for the two systems to fully merge.

The Friant-Kern Canal carries melted snowpack water from Northern California to Central Valley farms.

McCarthy is also co-sponsoring a bill with Valadao that would enlarge certain reservoirs and kickstart construction on a new reservoir in the Sacramento Valley. But some nonprofit leaders and local officials say these solutions would prioritize agriculture over residents.

“We need more solutions beyond storage and dams,” said Susana De Anda, executive director of the San Joaquin Valley-based environmental justice nonprofit Community Water Center. “[McCarthy] lacks understanding of the real critical problems we’re experiencing around the drought and our communities.”

Seeking to attract younger voters concerned about climate change to the Republican Party, McCarthy last year convened a Climate, Energy and Conservation Task Force to develop the party’s messaging and policies around the issue. And House Republican delegations have attended the last two United Nations climate summits.

Cars drive past a sign on the outskirts of Tooleville.

But all indications suggest that addressing human-caused climate change is not going to be a focal point of McCarthy’s now that he has the speaker’s gavel. McCarthy and House Republicans have shown they don’t want to move away from planet-warming fossil fuels, and few in the party are willing to connect global temperature rise to worsening droughts and extreme weather.

McCarthy dissolved Democrats’ Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, and he has vowed to investigate Department of Energy grants for electric vehicle components, as well as alleged “collusion” between environmental groups and China and Russia to “hurt American Energy,” according to a recent statement.

“Our representatives don’t talk about climate change; it’s a real problem,” De Anda said. “Climate change is real. Our communities are the canaries in the coal mine. We get hit first.”

It’s part of the reason Cuevas is hoping to move away in a couple years. He’s hopeful the water situation will improve by connecting Tooleville to a larger town’s water system; otherwise, he’s afraid he won’t be able to entice another buyer due to the water issues.

“I’m happy I had a chance to buy it, but we are planning to move,” Cuevas told CNN. “Right now, if I try, I ain’t going to get nothing, not even what I paid for the home.”
