The Church of Scientology Volunteer Minister’s core mission is to help — even in the midst of a pandemic

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 6, 2020

Whether help is needed at a natural or man-made disaster or a local neighborhood cleanup, Scientology Volunteer Ministers proudly get to work. But a pandemic required a completely different kind of response.

“When COVID-19 hit Colorado, the world seemed paralyzed,” said Patricia, a Volunteer Minister from the Church of Scientology in Denver. “Officials told us we were safer at home. But is ‘safer’ good enough?”

With the message “an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure,” the Church of Scientology created a How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center on the Scientology website, including three booklets containing the basic principles of prevention that can be read online or downloaded: How to Keep Yourself & Others WellHow to Protect Yourself & Others with a Mask & Gloves and How to Prevent the Spread of Illness with Isolation. There are also more than a dozen videos showing the simple actions anyone can take to keep themselves and others well.

The Church of Scientology in Denver mobilized a corps of Volunteer Ministers to provide this vital information to the community.

Following all state and local protocols for safety, the Volunteer Ministers donned masks and gloves, zipped up protective gear and hit the streets, handing out 11,000 copies of Stay Well booklets to businesses and door-to-door to local residents.

Their purpose: to help people with basic principles of prevention through these three educational booklets.

“Businesses gladly took the booklets and put them in clear view for costumers to pick up when they entered,” said a volunteer named Paul. “This is bringing calm to the environment,” said Diana. “In one shop, the employees decided to put copies in all the ‘to go’ bags of their customers.”

Copies of booklets come in boxes that fold into counter displays inviting people to “please take one.” On the back of the booklets, a QR code connects to the How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center.

Distribution of the booklets began in May around Scientology churches and missions across the globe. The Church of Scientology International Dissemination and Distribution Center printed five million copies of Stay Well booklets.

The Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers program is a religious social service created in the mid-1970s by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. It constitutes one of the largest international independent relief forces. Volunteer Ministers’ mandate is to be “a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others.” Their creed: “A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well.”

With California grappling with escalating COVID-19 cases, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers of the San Jose area rapidly went to work to help their community

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 5, 2020

To help their communities get through the pandemic, Volunteer Ministers are providing educational booklets — basic information on how germs spread, why masks are effective, how to put on a mask, how to wash your hands and how to stay well. They distribute three booklets: How to Keep Yourself & Others WellHow to Protect Yourself & Others with a Mask & Gloves and How to Prevent the Spread of Illness with Isolation.

The most popular languages for distribution of the booklets in San Jose are English, Spanish and Chinese. Teams of volunteers have brought them to restaurants for their takeout customers, to grocery stores, pharmacies, shops and banks. More than 100 businesses received displays inviting patrons to take the booklets. Volunteers also visited some 700 households to make these available to families throughout the community.

“There’s too much bad news out there and I see fear in my customers’ eyes and in their attitudes,” said the manager of a grocery store. “I truly appreciate that you are giving out solutions rather than contributing to the bad news.”

“Thank you so much,” said the manager of a bank. He put the booklets on the front island so all customers could see them and take them.

At a donut shop, a staffer grabbed the booklets as soon as the volunteers arrived and started to hand them out to patrons.

“California is really lagging behind most of the country,” said one of the volunteers from the Church of Scientology of San Jose. “But if everyone applied the simple information in these booklets, we could end this pandemic. That’s why it is so important to us to reach as many people as we can with this vital information.”

The booklets come in custom-designed boxes that fold into counter displays and invite people to “please take one.” On the back of the booklet, a QR code connects to the How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center on the Scientology website, where these and other prevention materials are available in 21 languages.

Distribution of the educational booklets began in May in communities around Scientology churches across the globe. The Church of Scientology International Dissemination and Distribution Center made this possible by printing and shipping five million copies of Stay Well booklets.

People can protect their family from the coronavirus, say the Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology San Diego. Their campaign to get educational booklets on prevention into the hands of local businesses and residents lets people know how.

    Press Release

    updated: Jul 20, 2020

The Church of Scientology San Diego took part in an international campaign to help their community get through the pandemic safe and sound.

When the pandemic began, the church created a series of booklets that make proven prevention easy to understand. All three illustrated booklets – How to Keep Yourself & Others WellHow to Protect Yourself & Others with a Mask & Gloves and How to Prevent the Spread of Illness with Isolation – are available in 21 languages to read or download from the How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center on the Scientology website along with dozens of videos and infographics that push home the message.

As soon as regulations permitted, Volunteer Ministers, dressed in protective gear, took off into their communities to share this information with businesses and residents.

“Wow, it’s so nice that you guys are doing this,” said the manager of a fast-food takeout store. “It’s very helpful.”

“This is very good information to give to people who are worried about what’s happening,” said the owner of a restaurant.

“Many people are scared about what is happening,” said an employee at a local boutique. “Thank you so much for passing this information out.”

The manager of a drug store was so interested in the booklets, he set up a display of 100 of them at the pharmacy checkout window and another display of 50 at the entrance to the store.

At a COVID-19 testing center, a doctor came out to meet with the Volunteer Ministers. After looking at the booklets, he asked to have sets of them for those coming to be tested.

“One of the homes we visited was a family of five,” said a Volunteer Minister from the San Diego church. “The woman who came to the door had the coronavirus two months ago and was in the hospital for a month. She told us how much she appreciated what we are doing and she took copies of the booklets for her brother and her neighbors so they can make sure they don’t get sick.”

Distribution of the educational booklets began in May in communities around Scientology churches and missions across the globe. The Church of Scientology International Dissemination and Distribution Center made this possible by printing and shipping out five million copies of Stay Well booklets.

The work of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers of South Africa since the country went under lockdown from the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Press Release

    updated: Jul 16, 2020

South Africa released an overview of the work of Scientology Volunteer Ministers since March 23 when the country went under lockdown.

With winter approaching in the Southern Hemisphere, the Church of Scientology looked at the possible ramifications of the coronavirus on the country and mobilized hundreds of volunteers to tackle the pandemic and encourage others in their work against this common enemy.

“Since day one, our priority has always been to assist essential services,” says Gaetane Asselin, President of the Church of Scientology in South Africa. “Our target was those who keep the country going, those who are the most vulnerable and those hardest hit by the pandemic.”

The best way to convey what they have accomplished over the past three months is in the numbers, according to Asselin, beginning with their work to clean and sanitize key facilities and vehicles:

    • Over 10,000 buildings, including many government buildings and hundreds of homeless shelters, orphanages, and homes for the elderly
    • Nearly 300,000 taxis, ambulances, metro police cars, and fire trucks
    • Tens of thousands of buses, sanitized at night, so millions of commuters can travel to work safely each day.

The Church of Scientology saw to the printing of 1 million copies of three educational prevention booklets and had them translated into ZuluXhosa and Sotho. Volunteer Ministers from the church have distributed more than 600,000 copies of these booklets so far to help everyone understand and implement simple prevention principles to keep them safe and well.

“Hundreds of volunteers worked 15-hour days, seven days a week for the last 100 days to get this done,” says Asselin. “The work is tough, but we are thrilled to be able to assist this way. We know how much this is needed and that’s what keeps us going. Our team has contributed some 250,000 volunteer hours, all funded by the Church, to safeguard essential services and those most vulnerable in the country.”

One community leader in Ekurhuleni said, “Your dedication, motivation and perseverance leaves me speechless.”

A horse trainer burst into tears when the volunteers arranged to sanitize her facility for free. “Nobody does this kind of thing these days,” she said. “This is exceptional.”

A court manager from Koster Magistrate Court thanked the volunteers for their “tireless effort in a time when we most needed help.”

“We have all been trained on the Volunteer Ministers technology developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard,” says Asselin. “It is this technology that helps us keep going in these difficult times. It gives us the certainty that no matter the challenges, something can be done about it.”

The Scientology Stay Well campaign assumes even greater importance in Colombia with the increase in new COVID-19 cases in the country.

    Press Release

    updated: Jul 15, 2020

Teams of Scientology Volunteer Ministers dressed in bright yellow jackets and protective gear picked up copies of educational booklets on prevention at the Church of Scientology Bogotá and saturated their neighborhood with information anyone can use to help themselves and others stay well.

With the message ”an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure,” volunteers brought thousands of copies of educational booklets to businesses and residences. These materials describe the basic principles of prevention in a way anyone can understand and put to use at home or at work.

The National Health Institute of Colombia reported a record number of 5,336 newly confirmed COVID-19 infections and 187 deaths on July 10, making the use of prevention even more urgent now than it was before.

Volunteer Ministers loaded up with boxes of three educational booklets: How to Keep Yourself & Others WellHow to Protect Yourself & Others with a Mask & Gloves and How to Prevent the Spread of Illness with Isolation

“When we entered one store, the manager told me he was one of the first cases of COVID-19 in Colombia,” said a Volunteer Minister (VM) named Juan. “He felt grateful, because having lived through it, he knows there is nothing more important than prevention. Managers of other stores were just as excited to know they are now part of a network of prevention help.”

“Neighbors and business owners were so happy to be able to promote prevention to others,” said a VM named Jorge. “Having this information created a sense of security and stability because they knew what to do and could share this with others,” said Nicolas, another Bogotá VM.

As for being able to help others with this information, the volunteers described it as “an amazing experience,” “phenomenal” and “unforgettable,” because they saw the impact of what they were doing. “At one store the manager said he wanted 10,000 booklets so he could place copies in every branch of his supermarket chain,” said Juan. “With tears in his eyes, he told us that he was putting the displays in the most prominent locations in each of the stores.”

The booklets come in custom-designed boxes that fold into counter displays and invite people to “please take one.” On the back of the booklets, a QR code connects to the How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center on the Scientology website, where these and other prevention materials are available in 21 languages—all free of charge.

With new COVID-19 cases on the rise, Sacramento Volunteer Ministers are working to get the numbers down.

    Press Release

“Prevention is important,” say the Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology Sacramento. “By implementing a few simple measures we can get the state back to normal.”

These measures are covered in a series of booklets Scientologists have been handing out to businesses and residences around town: How to Keep Yourself & Others WellHow to Protect Yourself & Others with a Mask & Gloves and How to Prevent the Spread of Illness with Isolation.

“Every place we went, people would pick up the booklets and start reading them right away,” said a Volunteer Minister named Nic. “One household we went to, the guy we spoke to had two friends who had the virus. He was super happy to know how to avoid getting it himself.”

“A neighbor of mine was surprised to find out the booklets were free,” said a Volunteer Minister named Florie. “She asked for more so she could share them with friends and we were happy to give her as many as she needed.”

When the Volunteer Ministers showed the booklets to the deacon of a local church he asked for and received copies to distribute to those served by the church food bank. These underserved families are among the most at-risk for infection.

Each of the booklets comes in a custom-designed box that folds into counter displays and invites people to “please take one.” On the back of the booklets, a QR code connects to the How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center on the Scientology website, which makes these and other prevention materials available in 21 languages—all free of charge. With new cases of COVID-19 in Northern California off the chart, understanding prevention and putting it to use at home and at work can give families a vital edge. Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology of Silicon Valley are making educational materials available to businesses and residents.

Their response to the record NorCal fire seasons of the past few years made the Volunteer Minister logo a familiar and welcome sight. Now, neighbors are seeing this logo on protective gear and bright yellow caps as volunteers respond to an entirely different kind of disaster with information to help people understand how to take charge of keeping themselves and others well.

These volunteers are visiting Mountain View businesses and residences with a series of booklets: How to Keep Yourself & Others WellHow to Protect Yourself & Others with a Mask & Gloves and How to Prevent the Spread of Illness with Isolation

“Everyone we spoke to thanked us for what we are doing,” said Ellie, a local Volunteer Minister. “I realized how lonely some people were in this neighborhood,” said Sid. “Elderly people especially really appreciated the interaction.”

These booklets are available in 21 languages, and with some 26 percent of the Mountain View population Asian and more than 21 percent Latino or Hispanic, the Chinese and Spanish editions were in high demand.

“People would stop their cars and ask for copies of the booklets,” said Sam.  “Everyone thanked us for what we are doing.”

On Friday, Tennessee announced 1,410 people tested positive for COVID-19, making it the state’s largest jump in new cases since the pandemic began. Volunteer Ministers from the Church of Scientology Nashville encourage sound prevention practices to bring this under control.

“We’re stepping up to take this pandemic down,” said a Volunteer Minister who took part in an initiative of the Nashville Church of Scientology to bring educational materials on prevention to the community. “When you follow the common-sense practices covered in the How to Keep Yourself and Others Well booklet, they work. It’s as simple as that.”

Part of an international campaign to help communities everywhere contain the pandemic, Scientology Volunteer Ministers of Nashville have provided “Stay Well” booklets to shops, restaurants and businesses to make simple information on prevention available to customers and clientele.

The Tennessee Department of Health announced on Friday that 1,410 people tested positive for COVID-19 that day – the state’s largest jump in new cases since the pandemic began. And on Sunday, Nashville’s Metro Health Department issued an order requiring masks or face coverings to be worn in indoor and outdoor public spaces. “Wearing a mask reduces the chance of contracting COVID-19,” said Dr. Alex Jahangir, chairman of Metro Nashville Board of Health. “Masks save lives.”

Based on the principle that an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure, the Volunteer Ministers dressed in their signature yellow jackets and caps and additional protective gear and loaded up with sets of three booklets: How to Keep Yourself & Others WellHow to Protect Yourself & Others with a Mask & Gloves and How to Prevent the Spread of Illness with Isolation.

Each booklet has a QR code on the back that goes to the How to Stay Well Prevention Center on the Scientology website, which makes these and other prevention materials available, free of charge.

“We have found that when people understand why they are doing things like wearing masks, they are more willing to do so,” says Julie Brinker, Director of Community Relations of the Church of Scientology Nashville.

Distribution of these booklets began in May in communities around Scientology churches and missions across the globe. The Church of Scientology International Dissemination and Distribution Center made this possible by printing and shipping out five million copies of Stay Well booklets.

International Volunteer Recognition Day was celebrated at an open house at the Church of Scientology in Seattle acknowledging its Volunteer Ministers Corps and their 15 years of service with Food Lifeline, a member of the national hunger relief group Feeding America.

Guest speaker Kirsten Riley, volunteer coordinator with Food Lifeline’s Hunger Solution Center in Seattle, acknowledged the Volunteer Ministers for their longstanding partnership with the group and their monthly work at the center sorting and repacking food for those in need.

“It’s our privilege to help Food Lifeline with its mission to end hunger in our state,” said Danar Hoverson who supervises the Volunteer Minister Corps in Washington. “We routinely work with groups such as Food Lifeline, the Queen Anne Food Bank, WAVOAD—Washington Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster—to help address real needs in our area.”

In creating the Volunteer Ministers program in the mid 1970s, Scientology Founder, L. Ron Hubbard wrote: “A Volunteer Minister is a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others.”

A Scientology Volunteer Minister in Kenya is infusing hope and kindness in the lives of the people of Western Kenya.

    Press Release

    updated: Nov 14, 2017

“Since your last seminar on honesty, church attendance has doubled,” wrote a Pentecostal pastor to Daniel, a Scientology Volunteer Minister from Western Kenya. “There were no absentees at the Sunday service, which was a trend before the seminar.”

The seminar he describes was in conflict resolution, presented to parishioners of the pastor’s church in the village of Seme. One parishioner told the pastor that he used what he learned to help him restore harmony with family members and neighbors.

These are the kind of stories that keep Daniel traveling from village to village throughout Kenya, sharing the Volunteer Minister technology developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard.

In an article published in Freedom Magazine, Daniel shared how he became a Volunteer Minister. Personal hardships in his childhood awakened him to the benevolence of others. A fire at the milling company where his father worked destroyed nearly 20 homes. “I was affected by the help my family and others received when this happened from good Samaritans and volunteers,” he said.

After completing his studies, Daniel took on managing a business school, but he became discouraged by some of his students’ inability to learn.

At the same time, he and his wife Margaret were having trouble in their marriage. “We differed on almost every subject, from family finance to parenting,” he said.

When he discovered the Scientology website, he became fascinated by Study Technology developed by Mr. Hubbard and took the online course in the subject. “I wanted to save my students and improve myself as well as my business and marriage by knowing how to know,” Daniel says.

The magazine describes how he was so impressed by the free course on that subject that he completed all 19 online courses, each on a different aspect life. These courses form the basis of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers (VM) program. His wife completed the courses too and they both share this information with anyone who wants to learn to improve their lives.

The week after his “Honesty and Integrity” seminar at the Pentecostal church in Seme, 90 people showed up for Sunday service to attend church and take part in the next seminar. Every seat in the church was filled and 15 people stood outside, straining to hear. Local residents were surprised to see four widows among the crowd. It seems that in the culture of the Luo people, a prominent ethnic group in the region, when a woman loses her husband, she also loses her rights. She is not permitted to attend to her farm, greet anyone with a handshake or participate in the life of the village. What these women learned at the first seminar gave them the courage to resolve to overcome suppression and be active members of the church.

Daniel has also taken on training other Volunteer Ministers, one of whom presented a seminar to a group of people with disabilities in the village of Yiro. Life for a disabled person is hard in the region. Most of them live in poverty, have to be carried wherever they go as they don’t possess wheelchairs, and depend on begging to survive. The chairman of the group is a banana farmer who now wants to use the technology of the Volunteer Ministers Targets and Goals Course to make his farm prosper so he can help raise the standard of living for himself and his fellow group members.

Daniel intends to continue his work and expand it to more villages in the region. “I have come to enjoy working as a Volunteer Minister and restoring spiritual values to my fellow human beings,” he says.

The Church of Scientology Volunteer Minister program is a religious social service created in the mid-1970s by L. Ron Hubbard. To make this technology broadly available, the Church provides free online training on the Volunteer Ministers website. Anyone of any culture or creed may train as a Volunteer Minister and use these tools to help their families and communities.

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 26, 2017

Although one of the most affluent communities in the United States, Seattle still suffers from homelessness and poverty.

One of the organizations dealing with poverty in the city is the Queen Anne Food Bank (QAFB), which serves 2,500 sack lunches each month. And their Food Bank program also provides 350 families with the groceries they need.

Church of Scientology Seattle Volunteer Ministers partners with the organization, sorting and packing food for QAFB customers.

QAFB recently began a new service, the Pack Program, an extension to their Monday-to-Thursday meal program that provides bags of food for the weekend. Scientology Volunteer Ministers donated 1,450 food items to the program to help get it off the ground.

Those willing to volunteer their time and resources should contact Queen Anne Food Bank at info@qafb.org or call (206) 216-4102.

The motto of the Church of Scientology Volunteer Minister Corps, “Something can be done about it,” was put into action this month as Seattle volunteers celebrated the holidays at Food Lifeline.

    Press Release

    updated: Dec 8, 2016

For more than a dozen years, Seattle Volunteer Ministers have been helping the homeless by volunteering with Food Lifeline.  Volunteer Ministers donate their time each month, sorting and packing food at the Food Lifeline facility that serves 275 food banks, meal programs and shelters in western Washington. Food Lifeline provides 91,000 meals daily to these programs.

“We have been proud to partner with Food Lifeline for many years and look forward to continuing our work with them in 2017,” said Danar Hoverson, who coordinates Volunteer Minister efforts for the local group.

Volunteer Ministers with the Seattle Church of Scientology recently completed a semiannual sock drive and delivered hundreds pairs of socks to local Seattle charities that support the homeless, including the Queen Anne Helpline, 157 Roy Street Men’s Shelter, and the Queen Anne Food Bank.

In a letter to the Church of Scientology of Seattle, the executive director of the Queen Anne Food Bank wrote, “The commitment to honoring the dignity of those we serve is exemplified through the Church of Scientology congregation through this generous and thoughtful donation.”

To address Seattle’s homeless situation, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has proposed opening new city-supervised tent encampments in addition to those already existing in the area.

With temperatures dropping across the region, the Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers have donated and delivered five new tents to provide needed shelter.

Volunteer Ministers follow The Scientology Handbook compiled from the works of humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard.  The book outlines tools that can be used to alleviate spiritual, emotional and physical travail and is available online at www.volunteerministers.org.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers Amazon Goodwill Tour brings help to another indigenous Amazon community.

On the banks of the Amazon River in Colombia in the village of Puerto Esperanza (Port of Hope), a bright yellow tent is attracting a lot of attention and visitors.

The village curaca—the leader of the indigenous people of the region—invited everyone to attend the opening ceremony, where he welcomed the Volunteer Ministers to his community. He was joined by the director of Civil Defense of Nariño—the westernmost department or state of the country—and a local Christian pastor who gave the invocation.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers Goodwill Tour has by plying the Amazon for the past decade, bringing practical help to those living in villages and working with public officials, educators, civil defense and religious leaders to assist them to deal with the needs of those they serve.

The Volunteer Minister program was created in the mid 1970s by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, who described the Volunteer Minister as “a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others.”

It is a broad initiative bringing effective physical and spiritual assistance to anyone, anywhere. Since its inception, hundreds of thousands have been trained in a wide range of skills that use Scientology fundamentals to alleviate physical, mental or spiritual suffering and improve any aspect of life—from communication and study to marriage and raising children.

The training is open to anyone who desires to help others and empower them to overcome difficulties and change conditions for the better.

Whether serving in their communities or on the other side of the world, the motto of the Scientology Volunteer Minister is “Something can be done about it.” The program, created in the mid 1970s by L. Ron Hubbard and sponsored by the Church of Scientology International as a religious social service, constitutes one of the world’s largest international independent relief forces.

15 Months Later, Nepal Still in Urgent Need of Help

    [ad_1]

Scientology Volunteer Ministers continue their work in Nepal, helping the country recover from the 2015 earthquakes.

    Press Release

    Jul 6, 2016

A permanent Scientology Volunteer Ministers center in Kathmandu is the center of a movement that continues to bring help to those left devastated by the 2015 Nepal earthquakes.

The center coordinates the work of thousands of volunteers working in villages throughout the country. And with more than 2 million still homeless because of the earthquakes, many of these teams of volunteers specialize in construction.

This past week nearly 1,000 Volunteer Ministers worked on construction projects, demolishing condemned structures, clearing out rubble and building houses in 17 districts including Kahtmandu, Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot, Laliptur and Tanahu.

But Nepal was struggling even before the earthquakes. The country already ranked near the bottom of the United Nations Development Human Development Index. And in 2011, according to the national living standards survey, more than 30 per cent of Nepalese subsisted on less than $14 each month. Increasing the standard of living and moving to a technology-based culture requires skills that are baulked by illiteracy and the quality of schooling in the country.

To help create a better future, Volunteer Ministers are working with schools to ensure youth learn the study skills they need to survive in today’s world. Each week they train hundreds of children and youth on the study technology developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard.

The Kathmandu Volunteer Ministers Center itself is a dynamic and lively activity, training volunteers from districts throughout the country on the 19 Volunteer Ministers courses so they can return to their homes and help their communities.

Whether serving at home or on the other side of the world, the motto of the Scientology Volunteer Minister is “Something can be done about it.” The program, created in the mid 1970s by L. Ron Hubbard and sponsored by the Church of Scientology International as a religious social service, constitutes one of the world’s largest international independent relief forces.

  • Helping Refugees Survive and Integrate Into Their New Home

Helping Refugees Survive and Integrate Into Their New Home

    [ad_1]

Forced to flee their homes, refugees in Brussels learn vital skills to gain employment in their new country.

The Churches of Scientology for Europe in Brussels, Belgium, hosted a Volunteer Minister seminar for a dozen Iraqi and Syrian refugees to help them adjust and survive in their new home.

In their own countries, most of these men held responsible, skilled positions in professional fields: They included engineers, business executives, a carpenter, a director and an optician. But as immigrants in a new and, to them, often confusion country, they have been unable to work in their fields or integrate into the local culture.

With the help of an Arabic translator, the men were taken through a seminar on communication skills from The Scientology Handbook, the textbook of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers, to help them overcome these untenable circumstances.

Tense and worried when they arrived at the Church, while doing the communication drills the men visibly  relaxed, laughed and enjoyed the training.

After the communication training, a local nonprofit delivered a workshop to help them gain employment in Brussels. They learned how to compile a CV and how to procure the Belgian equivalent of the certification  they had in the own countries. They also requested and received information on local customs and manners so they can feel certain and comfortable when they go for job interviews.

All agreed the tools they learned were highly beneficial and they were interested in having more training. They also wanted to set up these seminars for other refugees.

The Volunteer Ministers program was expressly intended for use by Scientologists and non-Scientologists alike. Anyone of any culture or creed may train as a Volunteer Minister and use these tools to help their friends and families and communities. And all are welcome to do so.

Equipped with effective technology to resolve virtually any difficulty, Volunteer Ministers live by the motto that no matter the problem, “Something can be done about it.”
