Help and Friendship is What Disaster Relief is All About, Say Scientology Volunteers

As the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Hurricane Ida Disaster Response Team members wrap up two weeks of service in Louisiana and head home to their families and jobs, what they will long remember is the warmth, friendliness and courage of the people of Louisiana.

St. Charles Parish is finally heading back toward normal: Schools are about to reopen, and power is restored in some 90 percent of homes. Knowing they made a difference, Scientology Volunteer Ministers who arrived in the region two weeks ago have headed home. They look back with fond memories of the warm and gracious people they met and helped.

The team cleaned out flood-damaged homes, chopped up and removed fallen trees, pulled down broken branches from trees to prevent them from falling on unsuspecting passersby. And they provided Scientology assiststechniques that have come to be known as “spiritual first aid.” Assists help people overcome the loss and confusion so often experienced in times of disaster.

On arriving in Louisiana, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers logged onto crisiscleanup.org to locate neighborhoods most in need of help. By connecting with the Mount Zion Baptist Church, they found out which parishioners needed assistance. Often, when they finished one project, someone next door or across the street also needed a hand, which they were happy to provide.

“I am truly grateful and blessed that you all were generous enough to assist me and my family during these difficult times,” said one person whose home they took care of.

“One woman thanked us over and over again,” said the Scientologist leading the project. “She had tried to get help but no one had come. Now she could go see her grandbabies. We were so happy to be able to help.”

“Your team members have been in my prayers and thoughts every day since our meeting at Mount Zion Baptist Church,” said a parishioner. “Each of you are a wonderful blessing. You are difference makers.”

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers program is a religious social service created by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. It constitutes one of the world’s largest independent relief forces.

A Volunteer Minister is “a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring truth and spiritual values to the lives of others.” Their creed: “A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well.”

The Founder of the Scientology religion is L. Ron Hubbard and Mr. David Miscavige is the religion’s ecclesiastical leader.

Scientology Volunteers Carry On With Their Hurricane Ida Disaster Relief

    [ad_1]

Providing what local residents need and want can take a unique turn, as it did this week for the Scientology Volunteer Ministers helping in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana.

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 18, 2021

The Scientology Hurricane Ida Disaster Response team continues its work in neighborhoods where it is still a long road to recovery from the category 4 hurricane that battered the region. Ida is the second most intense hurricane to hit Louisiana, causing an estimated $50 billion in damage. Only Katrina was more severe.

The Volunteer Ministers returned to Mount Zion Baptist Church, where earlier this week they removed a fallen tree from the parking lot, making it easier for the neighborhood to access food and supplies from the church, as a designated POD (point of distribution). This time their task filled a very different need.

When Ida struck, the storm toppled trees and snapped off and propelled branches into the graveyard, making it inaccessible to the congregation it has served for over 100 years. The deacon and several parishioners approached the team asking for their help to clean up the cemetery so a funeral could take place.

The age of the graves, tightly packed together, made using tractors and other heavy equipment impossible. So the Volunteer Ministers used chainsaws to clear out the road to the graveyard, cut up the trees and carry out the debris. They also freed up a fallen power pole, making it possible for the power company team to restore power to the church.

One of the trees crushed two graves when it fell. When the volunteers began cutting up the tree, they were attacked by a swarm of bees from a hive inside the trunk.

Just as that happened, the power company arrived and thanked them for freeing up the power pole which made their work go much faster. Noticing the trouble the Volunteer Ministers were having with the beehive, the power company employees brought in a truck with a crane, lifted the tree out of the graveyard—beehive and all—and put it down safely outside the cemetery.

Returning the following morning to complete the task, the volunteers gained first-hand knowledge of just how capricious Louisiana weather can be. Their work began that day in cold pouring rain but by 2 in the afternoon, the temperature shot up 20 degrees—steam literally rising from the ground. This was followed by another torrential downpour.

Despite the weather and the bees, ants, beetles, spiders, mosquitos and snakes in the muddy ground, a text like the one they received from one of the neighbors they helped on another day made the effort all worthwhile. “Your team members have been in my prayers and thoughts every day since our meeting by the Big Tree at Mt Zion,” it read. “Each of you are a wonderful blessing and you are difference makers.”

The Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers program is a religious social service created in the mid-1970s by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. It constitutes one of the world’s largest independent relief forces.

With the events of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City, Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige called on Scientologists to redouble their efforts to aid their fellow man. He issued a directive entitled “The Wake-Up Call,” which inspired astonishing growth within the Volunteer Minister program.

As of September 11, 2001, there were 6,000 Volunteer Ministers worldwide. Today, they are among the world’s most widely recognized independent relief organizations, with over 200,000 Volunteer Ministers on call internationally.

The tools of the Scientology Volunteer Minister are contained in The Scientology Handbook. A Scientology Volunteer Minister is a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by helping restore purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others. Volunteer Ministers live by the motto, “Something can be done about it.”

Church of Scientology Thanks Portland Leader for His Solutions to the Homeless Crisis

    [ad_1]

Oregon has a disproportionately larger population living on the streets when compared with other states. But one man is been taking the problem into his own hands, and he is making a difference.

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 16, 2021

At a community open house and forum, the Church of Scientology Portland recognized local activist and humanitarian Homer Williams, founder and CEO of Oregon Harbor of Hope, for his efforts to help resolve the homeless crisis, currently one of the state’s most pressing social problems.

Oregon Harbor of Hope shelter provides homeless people with essential services to help them stabilize their lives. Williams has found most people are surprised that nearly half of those using his shelter facilities go to work every day. They simply can’t afford the high cost of housing.

A retired real estate developer, Williams recognizes that “the city, county and state are working hard to address our crisis, but they cannot solve this problem alone. The private sector must get involved to help turn this problem around. This is our city. This is our home. These are our homeless. We can make a huge impact and give people hope. They need our help.”

Williams has devised a four-point plan which he presented to those attending the open house at the Church:

    1. Home Share Oregon: This is a computer program that matches people who have extra bedrooms in their homes with people who can afford only a small amount for rent. The matching service includes a long list of compatibility questions, background checks and legal services. It is free to use thanks to the support of donations and grants. There are well over 1 million spare bedrooms in owner-occupied homes in Oregon. If only 2 percent of those rooms were rented to people who can’t afford the cost of an apartment, 20,000 people would have a safe and affordable housing option not currently available. That is more than the 14,655 homeless in Oregon reported by the Department of Housing and Urban Development for 2020.
    2. Hotel/Motel Conversion Program: Willams says this is the most cost-effective way to immediately provide housing. These conversions can be done in months rather than years at a fraction of the cost for new construction.
    3. Managed Community “Pods”: Prefabricated tiny homes uniquely designed for easy assembly in a community along with modular service buildings to provide residents access to kitchens, showers, restrooms, laundry facilities and outdoor gathering areas. They provide residents the resources for a good night’s sleep, their own address, space, and access to centralized resources designed to provide job placement opportunities and ultimately, help to find a home of their own.
    4. AdoptOneBlock: A program to urge residents to sign up online, pick a block, select the cleaning supplies they will need, which are delivered to them to clean the chosen block. Some 2,800 people have signed up as “block ambassadors.” Williams expects to have over 10,000 by the end of the year.

In presenting the Church’s acknowledgment to Williams for his work and vision, Public Affairs Director Cherie Gross spoke of the partnership Harbor of Hope has with the Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology Portland. She said that Williams and his nonprofit organization are living examples of the motto of the Volunteer Ministers, that no matter the circumstances, “something can be done about it.”

Scientology: Helping Haitian First Responders Restore Peace of Mind to Survivors

    [ad_1]

In the final two sessions of a five-part seminar in the town of Jérémie, Scientology Volunteer Ministers train firefighters, Haitian Red Cross, Haitian National Police and other community leaders to help restore peace of mind to those suffering from the frequent disasters that plague this Caribbean nation.

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 9, 2021

Volunteer Ministers of the Scientology Haiti Disaster Response Team completed a five-day seminar Tuesday, September 7, that trained 97 first responders and community leaders to deliver Scientology assists—techniques developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard that address the emotional and spiritual effects of stress and trauma.

Arranged by former Jérémie mayor Yvon Janvier and cosponsored by GRADE: Groupe d’Appui au Développement et à la Démocratie (Support for Development and Democracy Group), and Fondation Communautaire Haïtienne (Haitian Community Foundation), Haitian National Police officers, the Haitian Red Cross, firefighters and community leaders also learned search and rescue and first aid skills.

Disasters are a tragic fact of life in Haiti. Two days after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake ravaged the island’s southwestern peninsula leaving thousands homeless, Tropical Storm Grace lashed the region with up to 15 inches of rain and 35-mile-per-hour winds. And the country was already reeling from the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse a month before.

Janvier told Scientology Volunteer Ministers headquarters in Los Angeles that as dire as the physical needs of his people are, he is even more concerned about their state of mind. He wanted to train a corps of first responders and local leaders in Scientology assists to bolster courage and restore optimism in his community. And the seminar did just that.

The final two days of the seminar concentrated on information contained in two Scientology Tools for Life courses: “Assists for Illnesses and Injuries,” and “Solutions for a Dangerous Environment.” Both are available free of charge on the Scientology website and the Volunteer Ministers website and some of those attending logged on to the courses through their phones to watch videos that introduce the subject and study the course materials presenting Mr. Hubbard’s technology in written form.

“I would like to thank you for this initiative,” said Belizaire, a local community leader. “I really enriched my knowledge and learned many things that will be useful to my community. I hope this will not be the last seminar for our town.”

“This has helped many people discover that life can change,” said Mariela, a member of the nonprofit Women’s Movement for the Development of Grand Anse. “And every person who discovers this technology is an opportunity for this community. May it go on and on.”

“From these days training with the Volunteer Ministers and Los Topos Azteca, I added so much to my knowledge as a police officer,” said an officer from the Haitian National Police. “I will share what I learned with my colleagues, my family and those around me. My heartfelt thanks.”

The Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers program is a religious social service created in the mid-1970s by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. A Scientology Volunteer Ministers Disaster Response team spent many months in Haiti to help the country recover from the 2010 earthquake and to train and establish Volunteer Ministers groups throughout the island that have continued to serve their communities ever since.

A Volunteer Minister’s mandate is to be “a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring truth and spiritual values to the lives of others.” Their creed: “A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well.”

Scientology Haiti Disaster Response Volunteers Team Up With Local Clinic to Provide Help

    [ad_1]

Nurses, who arrived in Les Cayes from Carrefour last weekend, are caring for injured survivors of the August 14 Haiti earthquake at a clinic in Camp-Perrin, a commune in the Les Cayes Arrondissement.

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 2, 2021

Ten nurses, wearing the bright-yellow T-shirts of the Scientology Volunteer Minister, helped set up a mobile clinic in Camp-Perrin, Haiti, and immediately started triaging and caring for patients.

Camp-Perrin is one of the communities hardest hit by the August 14 earthquake that left an estimated 12,000 injured and destroyed more than 52,000 homes. With so many in need of care and so few resources, the mobile clinic will perform a vital function.

The nurses, trained Scientology Volunteer Ministers, were part of a group of two dozen who traveled to Les Cayes last weekend to join the disaster response team.

In addition to their medical skills, they are also experienced in the administration of Scientology assists—techniques developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard covered in the Assists for Illnesses and Injuries Course on the Volunteer Ministers and Scientology websites. By addressing the emotional and spiritual factors in stress and trauma, assists can speed healing and ease discomfort.

The Scientology Haiti Disaster Response Team is also providing Scientology assists at the OFATMA (Occupational Accidents, Illness and Maternity) Hospital in Les Cayes which, like other hospitals, is struggling to keep up with those in need of attention and care. And they are training a team of 100 rescue workers on assists and other Volunteer Ministers technology such as communication and organizational skills to help them cope with the current crisis.

In creating the program in the mid-1970s, Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote that a Volunteer Minister “helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring truth and spiritual values to the lives of others. … A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana August 29. A Scientology Volunteer Ministers disaster response team is on the ground and their international headquarters has put out a call for more trained volunteers to help the region recover.

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 31, 2021

Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana Sunday, August 29, as a Category 4 storm—ironically, on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. One of the worst storms to hit the area since 2005, Ida has created power outages and flooding of low-lying areas creating massive damage.

Storm surge, extreme winds, and flash flooding knocked out 1,437 Louisiana cell towers and 18 water systems serving about 255,000 residents. More than a million are without power.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers headquarters in Los Angeles is calling for trained Scientology Volunteer Ministers who can join the Hurricane Ida Disaster Response to contact the Volunteer Minister hotline at (800) HELP-4-YU or 1 (323) 960-1949.

Scientology Volunteers Train Haiti Nonprofits on How to Help Traumatized Victims

With thousands injured and hundreds of thousands homeless after the 7.2 magnitude Haiti earthquake, first responders see Scientology assists as the key to providing needed help.

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 28, 2021

At 7.2 magnitude, the earthquake that struck Haiti on August 14 was twice as powerful as the one that hit the country in 2010. And the destruction is massive.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers in Carrefour and Les Cayes are working with nonprofits and first responders to train them on how to address the emotional and spiritual factors in the stress and trauma of those they are trying to help. They do this with seminars on Scientology assists—techniques developed for this purpose by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard.

In Les Cayes, close to the epicenter of the earthquake, Scientology Volunteer Ministers provided a seminar this week to a team of first responders who knew they needed a way to address more than the physical needs of the victims they help. “The session on illnesses and injuries assist procedures will help us save more lives,” said one of the rescue group members. And the leader of the group wants to continue training his team on all 19 chapters of the Scientology Handbook, the textbook for training a Volunteer Minister.

Stevenson, who leads the team of Volunteer Ministers serving in Les Cayes, was devastated by the January 2010 earthquake. Some 300,000 were dead. “I thought my life was over,” he says. But he happened to meet two Volunteer Ministers and they invited him to a seminar, which restored his hope and revived his will to live. Active as a Scientology Volunteer Minister ever since, he shares this technology with others, confident that by getting it into broad use, “it will help save my country.”

On August 26, while visiting communities heavily affected by the 14 August quake, U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Samantha Power, while pledging funding, also said, “Perhaps the most important lesson (from 2010) is that no development agency and no army or diplomatic corps can just import a perfect humanitarian response from afar. You need local expertise and local leadership to reach communities in need.”

It is just this kind of grassroots disaster response that Haitian Scientology Volunteer Ministers have provided for more than a decade. And it is seeing the difference the technology makes in others’ lives that inspires them to set aside their own concerns and help in the aftermath of this disaster.

In creating the program in the mid-1970s, Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote that a Volunteer Minister “helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring truth and spiritual values to the lives of others. …A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well.”

Famed search-and-rescue specialists Los Topos, featured on a National Geographic documentary for their work following the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami, add their skill and muscle to the fight against time to locate survivors in the rubble of the Haiti earthquake

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 26, 2021

A team of search-and-rescue specialists and highly trained Volunteer Ministers flew out of Miami today, headed for Port-au-Prince. There they continue their journey to Les Cayes by the fastest means possible to join the search-and-rescue teams scouring the rubble for more than 300 people still missing from the Aug. 14 7.2 magnitude earthquake. They will also connect with some 100 Haitian Volunteer Ministers who immediately deployed and have been providing relief in their communities since the disaster occurred.

Los Topos, led by founder Héctor “El Chino” Méndez, has partnered with Scientology Volunteer Ministers (VMs) at major disaster sites for more than a decade. It was in 2010 in Haiti, after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake, that they first formed a partnership. Together, they have responded to the Japan earthquake and tsunami in 2011, the Nepal earthquake in 2015, the Mexico earthquake in 2017, and numerous other natural disasters.

Los Topos means “the moles” in Spanish — a nickname earned for their ability to enter impenetrable rubble through impossibly narrow and precarious openings to rescue buried survivors.

Flying in with Los Topos are highly experienced Volunteer Ministers who will coordinate the VM response on the ground. Veterans of numerous disasters, they will coordinate and direct the work of the Haiti Volunteer Ministers on the island’s southern peninsula — the region most affected by the quake.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers (VMs) from across Haiti have arrived in Les Cayes after a series of disasters left the city in ruins. Days after the city was decimated by a 7.2 earthquake, Tropical Storm Grace triggered mudslides on the island, adding further challenges to relief efforts. UNICEF estimates that some 1.2 million people are affected including a half-million children.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers headquarters in Los Angeles immediately reached out to Haiti VMs to ensure they and their families were safe and to coordinate the response. The volunteers then met with the Civil Protection Coordinator and other officials and are providing relief in Les Cayes. Meanwhile, additional resources including search and rescue specialists, nurses and additional Volunteer Ministers are being readied to deploy to the region.

The VMs in Les Cayes are working with other relief organizations including the police chaplains to provide aid and help people salvage what they can from the ruins.

A new video on Scientology.org shows what Scientology Tools for Life mean to those who have completed the courses and how they have changed their lives.

    Press Release

    updated: May 13, 2021

“When I started learning these 19 Tools for Life Courses, I couldn’t stop,” says a Johannesburg school principal in a new video on the Scientology website. “They are related to my everyday life and living.” Featured in a video on the Scientology website in the new interactive timeline, 20/21—A Look Back and a Look Ahead, she is one of more than 11,500 people in South Africa who have taken Scientology Tools for Life courses since the pandemic began.

After completing all 19 free courses on the Scientology website, the principal was moved to tears. Now she can help people—people she doesn’t even know yet.

Before the Scientology Tools for Life courses, a teacher from Tembisa, South Africa, couldn’t handle people who were angry and she lacked the confidence to deal with her pupils. The courses have made a huge difference in her life and work.

A reserve police officer from Mmametlhake finds it much easier now to communicate. A woman from Ekurhuleni who never considered helping others before is now volunteering every day.

A bishop from Pretoria sees this knowledge as the key to eradicating poverty and hunger. A pastor from Mmametlhake says the Scientology courses completely changed how she counsels her congregation. Now she can listen and understand, and she has a spiritual toolkit to empower them. A pastor from Pretoria says, “These courses helped me be a better person.”

The textbook of the Volunteer Minister is the Scientology Handbook, with each Tool for Life course covering one chapter. A minister from Bloemfontein who has learned these tools says the Scientology Handbook is so powerful, he calls it “the Book of Life.”

This video is part of a new interactive timeline showing the Church’s global pandemic response, illustrated by more than 1,200 images and 14 videos at “20/21: A Look Behind & A Look Ahead.” It shows how Scientology Volunteer Ministers reached out with help in the face of this global catastrophe. Ten months into the COVID-19 crisis, Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology Budapest continue to raise donations and deliver supplies to those in need.

    Press Release

    updated: Jan 23, 2021

Many Hungarian families, already challenged financially before COVID-19, depend on the country’s charities to make it through these trying times.

Because of the pandemic, food insecurity or hunger have become facts of life for many families in the country.

Raising donations of food and goods and working with other Hungarian charities, the Volunteer Ministers (VMs) from the Church of Scientology Budapest continue to serve those in need. And as winter deepens, with the country under lockdown to fight the third wave of the virus, those needs increase dramatically.

So the VMs continue their work to distribute durable food, fresh fruit and vegetables and hygiene products to at-risk families.

“We believe that we are all stronger when we come together,” says Timea Vojtilla, who heads up the Budapest VMs. She posted on Facebook thanking everyone who donated or helped with these activities.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers also learned that Tündérpakk Foundation—a charity they frequently work with—was collecting jackets for needy neighbors and the homeless.

“It’s cold out there,” posted Vojtilla. “Very cold. This could cost people their lives in the midst of a pandemic. This is why we decided to support the Tündérpakk Foundation’s coat giveaway. Some of the coats we collected, we simply hung up on Tündérpakk’s door for people to come by and take them. The rest, we delivered to the head of the foundation.”

Tündérpakk Foundation is a nonprofit founded and run by two mothers because, they say on their website, “it is part of our lives to help our fellow human beings.”

“Thank you for your selfless support of those in need in Budapest and throughout the country,” posted Vojtilla about Tündérpakk. “We love helping with you!”

The Scientology Volunteers Ministers of Hungary are headquartered at the Church of Scientology Budapest, whose new home was dedicated in 2016 by Mr. David Miscavige, ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion. The Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers program is a religious social service created in the mid-1970s by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard.

A Volunteer Minister’s mandate is to be “a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others.”

Churches of Scientology of Italy join forces to help in the aftermath of the 6.4 Croatia earthquake.

    Press Release

    updated: Jan 16, 2021

It was far from a typical New Year for families in Sisak-Moslavina County of Croatia and parts of Zagreb this year. Volunteer Ministers of Northern Italy responded to the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck December 29 leaving eight dead and severely damaging more than 9,000 buildings, including the region’s largest hospital. The worst earthquake to hit the area in 140 years, it has generated some 700 aftershocks over the past two weeks.

Back in Padua after a week in Croatia, Ettore Botter, a Volunteer Minister who also oversees the humanitarian campaigns of the Church of Scientology Padua, describes his first visit to the region as “a week of intense but very satisfying work.”

Thanks to the rapid response of the Civil Protection Volunteers of the Scientology Community (Pro.Civi.Co.S) of Turin and Milan, Botter’s team was able to bring urgently needed supplies to displaced families in Sisak, Petrinja and Glina—among the cities hardest hit by the disaster.

Learning of the devastation, Italian Scientologists immediately raised funds and collected supplies to bring basic necessities to the region including winter clothing, hygiene products, baby food, portable stoves, and plastic sheeting for damaged homes to prevent further destruction to furniture and other possessions.

Pro.Civi.Co.S volunteers launched a second collection drive and Botter, who marks 20 years as a Volunteer Minister this year, will return to Glina with a team of Volunteer Ministers from Hungary.

The following year, Volunteer Ministers of Italy formed Pro.Civi.Co.S, which was entered into the registry of the National Department of Civil Defense.

A Volunteer Minister’s mandate is to be “a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others.”

Northern California Scientology Volunteer Ministers speak of the red devil sky, reflecting the devastation of the Glass Fire decimating Napa and Sonoma counties. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Wednesday in Napa, Sonoma and Shasta Counties. And the National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning of critical wildfire weather conditions for portions of the greater Bay Area and Santa Cruz mountains from 1 p.m. Thursday, October 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, October 2.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers responding to the fires apply the basic principles of prevention as outlined in the How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center on the Scientology website: The correct use of masks and gloves, handwashing, disinfection protocols, and isolation at the first sign of illness.

    • Volunteer Ministers are taking part in a fire-alert team to notify residents by phone ahead of time with orders from officials related to evacuations and needed precautions.
    • They distribute food and drinks to food banks.
    • They provide emotional and spiritual care calls.
    • They connect children and seniors with first responders, medical staff and other essential workers by having them write letters and thank you notes and making sure the letters arrive.

Any Volunteer Minister wishing to help should contact their local Church of Scientology or email Volunteer Ministers’ headquarters: disasterresponse@volunteerministers.org.

The world owes a debt of gratitude to emergency workers who risked their lives at the World Trade Center in 2001 and the many thousands more who continue to do so at disaster sites every day.

On the 19th anniversary of the collapse of the Twin Towers, in the year of COVID-19, with forest fires burning throughout California, and a record hurricane season in full play, Scientology Volunteer Ministers salute first responders and health care personnel who put their lives on the line to protect the lives of others.

9/11 served as a wakeup call to Volunteer Ministers everywhere. Within hours, they were on-site, providing support to emergency personnel and bringing order to the chaos.

“As any New Yorker would tell you, to see the Twin Towers erupt and then disintegrate was a living nightmare,” said one of the first Volunteer Ministers to arrive at the scene. “Over 25,000 people were gotten out of the towers because of the work of first responders, civilian fire wardens, strangers assisting others, police, firefighters, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice that day in service to others.”

Volunteer Ministers arrived from across the U.S. and abroad to help at Ground Zero. They cared for the physical needs of emergency workers with food, water and clothing. They helped exhausted police and firefighters cope with fatigue and shock using Scientology assists, techniques developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard that address the emotional and spiritual factors in stress and trauma.

“Not only did 9/11 inspire Scientologists to become active Volunteer Ministers, it was also a turning point for volunteerism overall,” says Joava Good, Deputy Director of the Churches of Scientology Disaster Response. “Since then, the amount of collaboration among churches, nonprofits and government agencies has increased beyond anything we’ve ever seen before. If the intention of this outrage was to overwhelm us, to drive us into apathy, I believe it had the opposite effect—it brought people of goodwill everywhere together as a united team.”

This year, a novel coronavirus created an entirely different kind of disaster than any Volunteer Ministers had to confront before. The most effective measures were researched for ensuring the safety of Scientology staff and parishioners, and implemented internationally as protocols under the direction of Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige.

The Church of Scientology created the How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center on the Scientology website and published three booklets containing the basic principles of prevention.

Volunteer Ministers from Scientology Churches and Missions across the globe distributed 5 million copies of these booklets to help their communities get through these trying times safe and well.

    updated: Sep 3, 2020

When thunderstorms triggered flash floods, destroying some 3,000 homes on the Greek island of Evia last month, a team of Volunteer Ministers from the Athens Church of Scientology reached out with help.

Volunteers cleaned out caked mud that coated the floors and helped carry out furniture to dry. They stripped out soggy carpeting. They did whatever was needed to keep the mildew and mold from destroying homes.

“We also applied simple Scientology procedures called assists to help people over the emotional shock they suffered,” said the lead Volunteer Minister. Assists are techniques developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard that relieve the emotional and spiritual factors in stress and trauma.

Volunteer Ministers respond to disasters great and small. Whether helping a neighbor cope with a family problem or an upset at work or traveling to another city or halfway around the world in the wake of fire or earthquake, they live by their motto that no matter the situation “Something Can Be Done About It.”

A month ago, with COVID-19 holding steady in a low range, it looked like Hawaii would be open for business before Labor Day. But a surge in cases makes that out of the question, according to Gov. David Ige and Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell who announced new restrictions August 18.

Volunteer Ministers from the Church of Scientology of Hawaii believe understanding the principles of prevention is vital for overcoming this setback.

They took part in a campaign to distribute educational booklets to Honolulu businesses and households on the basis that “an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure.”

The Church of Scientology has published three booklets containing the basic principles of prevention: How to Keep Yourself & Others WellHow to Protect Yourself & Others with a Mask & Gloves and How to Prevent the Spread of Illness with Isolation. These can be read online or downloaded free of charge at the How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center on the Scientology website in 21 languages (including Japanese and Chinese). There are also more than a dozen videos illustrating the information from the booklets.

“You never know who you are going to meet when you knock on a door,” said one of the Volunteer Ministers. “A Korean YouTuber lived at one house. She took a video of us giving her the booklet. She recently moved to Hawaii and said many Koreans are afraid to travel here because of the quarantine, so she wanted to help people back home feel less worried about coming to Hawaii.”

“One man wanted to share the information with his mother and granddaughter who were coming over. He took a copy for each of them. There was the mother of a young baby who had decorated her door with handmade flowers. She was incredibly thankful and sweet,” said the Volunteer Minister. “It was such a fulfilling and worthwhile experience to do this.”

Distribution of the educational booklets began in May in communities around Scientology Churches across the globe. The Church of Scientology International Dissemination and Distribution Center printed and shipped 5 million copies of Stay Well booklets.

With Kansas in the Red Zone, Scientology Volunteer Ministers Urge Prevention

The White House Coronavirus Task Force has just designated Kansas as a COVID-19 “Red Zone.” Two weeks ago, it placed central Illinois counties on alert. Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology Kansas City are working to bring the pandemic under control by educating the community on prevention.

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 20, 2020

Volunteer Ministers from the Church of Scientology of Kansas City are tackling COVID-19 with education.

“We are all in this together,” says the lead KC Volunteer Minister. “By applying proven principles of prevention, we can get through the pandemic and move on.”

In May, the volunteers distributed thousands of educational booklets to local businesses, churches, and nonprofits so they could in turn provide them to those they serve. And they’ve visited hundreds of households to make sure people have what they need and know how to keep themselves and their families and friends well.

The Church of Scientology has published three booklets containing the basic principles of prevention: How to Keep Yourself & Others Well, How to Protect Yourself & Others with a Mask & Gloves and How to Prevent the Spread of Illness with Isolation. These can be read online or downloaded free of charge in 21 languages at the How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center on the Scientology website.

“I really loved handing out these booklets,” said one of the volunteers. “Everyone was so appreciative.”

“People need this information,” said the public outreach representative of the KC Fire Department about the booklets he received on behalf of the firefighters.

A minister who is active in the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce was about to join a Zoom conference when the volunteers came by to bring him copies of booklets. He told them he was concerned about his parishioners—language can be such a barrier to understanding. He was thrilled that the volunteers brought him copies in English and Spanish and found them so informative he wanted to present them to the dozens of Hispanic leaders he would be joining in the conference.

“We met with one pastor who had many questions about personal health,” said the lead volunteer. “He was impressed to see that all of his questions were answered in the booklets. He found the information on isolation very helpful because it shows people how they can stop the spread of the virus.”

“You can tell it means a lot to people that we are going out to their homes just to help them,” said a Volunteer Minister. A car pulled up and two teenage boys asked the volunteers why they were going door-to-door. When they showed them the booklets the boys lit right up. One of them asked for five copies for his friends. He was really happy someone was looking out for his neighborhood.

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 14, 2020

As soon as South Africa’s President Ramaphosa announced the National State of Disaster on March 15, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Disaster Response team moved into action. They immediately began decontaminating COVID-19 hotspots and they have not slowed down since.

Beginning with essential services such as police and fire departments, they extended their help by forming partnerships, beginning with the Department of Social Development with whom they decontaminated over 900 buildings, including shelters and orphanages.

They extended their reach to clinics, hospitals, the Departments of Roads and Transport, Environmental Health, Arts and Culture and ultimately every municipality in Gauteng.

Mid-April, they took on daily disinfecting of entire fleets of taxis.

With more than 200 partnerships from Gauteng to KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Eastern Cape, the Volunteers have provided decontamination to 19,000 buildings, 558,000 vehicles, and railway and bus stations. They have contributed some 350,000 volunteer hours to fighting the pandemic.

While they continue these services, a priority of the Volunteer Ministers is the empowerment of others. In that regard, they have handed out 1 million copies of educational booklets on preventing the spread of the virus in English, Zulu, Xhosa and Sotho.

They are also offering training to anyone wishing to join their ranks. Their 19 Tools for Life courses are all available free of charge through the Scientology and Volunteer Ministers websites.

Caroline, a volunteer who recently completed these courses, said, “The Scientology Tools for Life Courses made me a better person than before. Most of all, I can understand other people’s behavior and am more able to assist them through life’s challenges.”

The principal of a school said, “It is amazing to see how many leaders were produced through participation in this training and these leaders are changing the lives of others for the better.”

The officer of a South African Police Service (SAPS) station described the training as an “eye-opening experience for me personally.”

Three booklets and more than a dozen videos on the How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center provide proven prevention principles in 21 languages. French Scientologists share these resources with their communities.

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 12, 2020

With new cases of COVID-19 nearly doubling in France in recent weeks and so much hinging on bringing the pandemic back under control, French Scientologists urge their communities to learn and adopt the basic principles of prevention.

When the pandemic began, the most effective measures were researched for ensuring the safety of Church staff and parishioners, and these were implemented internationally as protocols under the direction of Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige.

To make this prevention information broadly available, the Church of Scientology published three educational booklets: How to Keep Yourself & Others WellHow to Protect Yourself & Others with a Mask & Gloves and How to Prevent the Spread of Illness with Isolation.

With the motto “an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure,” as soon as restrictions eased in France, Volunteer Ministers, dressed in protective gear, provided thousands of complimentary copies of the booklets to local businesses and residents.

These booklets have been made available in 21 languages to read or download free of charge from the How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center on the Scientology website, along with more than a dozens videos and infographics that push home the message.

“The lockdown was hard on everyone,” says Michel, a Volunteer Minister from Paris who helped with the distribution. “People were happy to finally have restrictions lifted so they could get their businesses going again.”

“Shop owners and managers appreciate having simple booklets that explain what people can do to keep themselves and their friends and families well,” says a Volunteer Minister named Luca. “We dropped off a box of booklets at a clothing shop and the next day the owner asked for another box and told us how fast the booklets were going. The owner of a pizzeria asked for a display of 100 booklets and another 100 to hold in reserve to have plenty on hand for his customers.” People would stop the volunteers on the street and ask for copies.

“The answer to this new outbreak is simple,” says Michel. “We can bring it back under control. The answers are all in these booklets. We urge people to visit the How to Stay Well Prevention Resource Center.”

Scientology Volunteer Ministers have distributed some 5 million copies of Stay Well booklets across the globe. The Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers program is a religious social service created in the mid-1970s by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. It constitutes one of the largest and most visible international independent relief forces.
