Church of Scientology Joins the Celebration of 200 Years of Central American Freedom

Every year on Sept. 15, Central Americans of Los Angeles celebrate the day Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Honduras declared independence from Spain

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 14, 2021

Sept. 15 marks the 200th anniversary of Central American countries declaring their independence. Working with leaders of the Los Angeles Guatemalan and Salvadorian communities, the Church of Scientology Los Angeles launched this celebration early, taking part in two parades and hosting two festivals over Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 4-5.

First was the Guatemala Bicentennial Parade down Hollywood Boulevard, organized by the Guatemalan Chamber of Commerce. The Volunteer Ministers of the Los Angeles Church of Scientology partnered with the Chamber, hosting food drives this year to help deal with increased food insecurity because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers in their signature yellow T-shirts walked down the boulevard in front of their float. They carried a 12-foot banner bearing their motto: “Something can be done about it.”

The parade route ended at the Church of Scientology at L. Ron Hubbard Way in East Hollywood, where the Church organized an Independence Day festival featuring music, salsa dancing, and food from an assortment of Hollywood’s favorite food trucks.

Sunday was dedicated to the equally joyous celebration of El Salvador’s independence, beginning with a two-mile parade down Hollywood Boulevard organized by Festival Independencia Salvadoreña. Volunteers from the Scientology-sponsored United for Human Rights initiative, working with parade organizers, invited paradegoers to the Independence Day party at the Church of Scientology, right at the end of the parade route. Sunday’s celebration was rich in Latin American culture, with traditional music and dancing.

The Church of Scientology Los Angeles is an Ideal Scientology Organization, configured to serve its parishioners in their ascent to spiritual freedom and to serve as a resource for the entire community.

The Church sponsors humanitarian programs that provide practical solutions to some of the most pressing issues communities are confronted with today. Voices for Humanity, an original series on the Scientology Network, features, among many others, the work of Guatemalan human rights activist Cynthia Guerra and Salvadorian drug-prevention champion Hugo Angulo Rogel

The Church of Scientology Los Angeles is also featured on the Scientology Network in the program Inside a Church of Scientology.

Scientology Network was launched with a special introduction by the religion’s ecclesiastical leader David Miscavige in 2018. Programs are available on DIRECTV 320, at Scientology.tv and through Apple TV, Fire TV, Roku, YouTube and mobile apps for smartphones and tablets.

    Press Release

    updated: Nov 22, 2019

Scientology Network’s VOICES FOR HUMANITY, the weekly series presenting heroic change-makers from a variety of faiths, cultures and nations, working to uplift communities, announces a new episode featuring activist Rosalba Cordero.

Mexico has become a killing field—nearly a hundred murders every day while Mexican prisons serve as “colleges of crime” with over 80 percent of those released returning to criminality. Saving Mexico’s future by salvaging youth, Rosalba and José Cordero fight against moral decline that enables Mexico’s drug cartels to traffic kids into a life of organized crime. Their campaigns in schools and prisons across Mexico carry a powerful message of moral values, bringing new hope for their nation.

    ABOUT ROSALBA CORDERO

Born in Mexico City, Rosalba recognized at a young age that many crimes and injustices stemmed from lack of basic moral values. Rosalba vowed to find some way to spare children from the trauma she suffered. Discovering The Way to Happiness, a common-sense guide to better living, Rosalba and husband José founded a nonprofit to forward the book’s precepts. Their Social Development and Recovery of Values Association educates young people in schools and across Mexico’s prison system. Using The Way to Happiness, Rosalba and José have created real criminal reform in prisons across Mexico State and Mexico City—with 99 percent of graduates of the program living lives free of crime. Their efforts to restore morality and peace have earned them recognition by the Mexican federal government.

Uniting Cultures Through Art at the Church of Scientology of the Valley

Bridging cultural differences and creating friendship and understanding through music and dance

    Press Release

    updated: Aug 26, 2019

In a world where racism and discrimination are headline news, a prince of the Buganda Kingdom of Uganda, singer-songwriter Saava Karim, is uniting cultures through music and dance. Through his nonprofit BantuFest and an annual concert of the same name, hosted this year by the Church of Scientology of the Valley, he brings together diverse communities in the name of friendship and equality.

The array of colorful ethnic costumes on stage and throughout the auditorium showed the universal appeal of the concert, with performers from Uganda, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Guatemala and America. The evening was capped by the exotic taste of Ugandan delicacies served to all attending.

The word “Bantu” means “a group of people.” Thus “BantuFest” is a term coined to mean a gathering of people from all walks of life for a worthy cause. BantuFest is raising funds for a childbirth hospital in Uganda, a country where some 7,500 women and girls die in childbirth or pregnancy each year. BantuFest also sponsors drug prevention, medical assistance, school programs to promote local culture, and assistance to creative artists in Africa.

There is always something exciting going on at the Church of Scientology of the Valley in North Hollywood, California. The church, which was dedicated in March 2017, makes its auditorium and conference rooms available for nonprofit and cultural programs and has become a hub for the community, including hosting the Los Angeles tour of the Philippine Ballet Theater earlier this year.

    Press Release

    updated: Dec 18, 2018

Scientology Network’s DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE, the weekly series providing a platform for independent filmmakers to air films on important social, cultural and environmental issues, presents A New Color, a beautiful portrait of a renowned muralist that examines her use of art to bridge cultural differences, premiering Dec. 21, 2018.

DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Scientology Network.

The travels and conversations of artist, educator, activist and great-grandmother Edythe “Edy” Boone were filmed by documentarian Marlene “Mo” Morris in an exploration of the artist’s life and passions.

Boone is perhaps best known for her participation in the creation of the famous anti-colonialist, multicultural mural of mythical women, MaestraPeace, on the Women’s Building in her hometown of San Francisco. Boone has painted joyful and provocative murals that explore music, the AIDS epidemic, poverty, racial discrimination and inequality. She teaches art to youth and seniors, discussing social issues wherever she goes.

    ABOUT MARLENE “MO” MORRIS

Marlene “Mo” Morris is an Independent filmmaker and social justice activist. As a first-time documentary director, Morris captured Edy Boone in action and her reflections on nearly eight decades of social justice work pursued through her art. Prior to this film, Morris had a career as a mediator and immigration attorney. Morris has worked as a producer for nonprofit and educational videos on topics ranging from ecology, domestic abuse, Jewish choral music and restorative justice.

This deeply personal film has been warmly received by critics who called A New Color “beautifully crafted.” The emotionally rich film is “empowering and full of strong minority women being generous and proud,” wrote one Boston critic and a Berkeley critic described the film as “a vehicle to discuss inequality and racial justice.”

    ABOUT DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE

For this reason, the Scientology Network provides a platform for independent filmmakers who embrace a vision of building a better world.
