  • Suresh Krissna’s Baasha Anniversary Post Rekindles Memories of a Rajinikanth Milestone | Filmfare.com

    [ad_1]

Thirty-one years after Baasha first thundered into theatres, director Suresh Krissna took to social media to pay tribute to the film that redefined superstardom in Tamil cinema. Marking the anniversary, he shared a message on X that neatly captured why Baasha continues to loom large in popular culture.

A director looks back at the storm he helped create

“31 Years of Baasha. A phenomenon crafted by many legends. Rajinikanth — MASS redefined. Music that roared by Deva. Words that struck gold by Vairamuthu. A towering villain — Raghuvaran. Grace & glamour — Nagma”

The post immediately struck a chord with fans, many of whom flooded the replies with screenshots, dialogue clips and memories of watching the film in packed single screens. For Krissna, the message was not just nostalgia but a reminder of how Baasha became a collective effort of artists at the peak of their powers.

Released in 1995, the Rajinikanth led film told the story of a former gangster who lives a restrained, law-abiding life after making a dying promise, only to be forced back into the underworld when an old enemy resurfaces. It was a familiar arc on paper, yet the way Baasha unfolded on screen made it feel seismic. The slow reveal of Rajinikanth’s violent past, the carefully staged elevation scenes and the moral tension between restraint and revenge turned a routine gangster drama into a cinematic moment that audiences had never experienced before.

    The legends behind the phenomenon

Suresh Krissna’s anniversary post also served as a roll call of the film’s real heroes. At the top of the list was Rajinikanth, whose transformation from an auto driver to a feared don still defines the idea of mass cinema. Baasha did not just consolidate his stardom. It rewrote the grammar of how a hero could be presented, creating a template that countless films would attempt to imitate over the next three decades.

Raghuvaran’s name in the tribute is equally significant. His flamboyant, menacing antagonist brought a theatrical menace that matched Rajinikanth beat for beat. Their confrontations were not merely action sequences but psychological duels that elevated the drama.

Then came Deva’s music, described by Krissna as something that roared. Songs like Naan Autokaaran and Ra.. Ra.. Ramaiya were more than chart toppers. They became cultural markers, playing at festivals, rallies and celebrations long after the film left theatres. Vairamuthu’s dialogues too struck gold, with several lines entering the everyday vocabulary of Tamil pop culture, quoted by fans across generations.

Nagma’s presence added warmth and glamour to a narrative otherwise dominated by violence and power. Her character anchored Baasha’s quieter moments, reminding audiences of the life the hero was desperately trying to protect.

Today, Baasha is not remembered merely as a blockbuster from the 90s. It is remembered as a moment in time when multiple legends aligned to create something that felt electric. Suresh Krissna’s post captures that truth with simple gratitude, turning a social media update into a reminder of why Baasha remains etched in the collective imagination of Tamil cinema.

  • Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth to Reunite After 46 Years on Screen | Filmfare.com

    [ad_1]

At a recent event in Dubai, Kamal Haasan confirmed what cinephiles have waited decades to hear: he and Rajinikanth will share the screen again after 46 years. Their last joint outing was in Allauddinum Arputha Vilakkum (1979), where Kamal played the lead and Rajini took on the antagonist’s role.

With a playful analogy, Kamal explained why the reunion took so long. “Back then, we used to share one biscuit. Later, we wanted one each. Now we have decided to share again. The audience will decide if it is truly a ‘Tharamaana Sambavam’.” His words drew laughter, applause and instant buzz online.

He also put to rest the long-standing narrative of rivalry. “It was never between us. We have always been friends. Competition was something others imagined,” he said, making it clear that this collaboration is rooted in respect and camaraderie. Kamal added that they had often spoken about producing films for one another but the timing had never worked out until now.

    Lokesh Kanagaraj in the Mix

Details about the new project remain a mystery. There is no official word on the title, cast or release date. The strongest speculation is that Lokesh Kanagaraj, who has delivered some of the biggest Tamil hits in recent years, will be directing.

Lokesh has previously teamed up with both stars. He gave Kamal one of his biggest recent successes with Vikram and directed Rajinikanth in this year’s blockbuster Coolie. If he does helm this reunion, it will be the ultimate coming together of three of Tamil cinema’s biggest names.

Rajinikanth’s Coolie collected over ₹500 crore at the box office and quickly headed to streaming. Kamal, meanwhile, recently worked with Mani Ratnam on Thug Life and has Indian 3 and KH237 in progress. For both actors to clear their schedules for a joint project underlines just how special this film will be.

Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth to Reunite After 46 Years on Screen

    A Historic Return

Kamal and Rajini were the face of Tamil cinema’s golden age in the 70s and 80s. From Apoorva Raagangal and Moondru Mudichu to 16 Vayathinile, their films defined an era and set the benchmark for on-screen partnerships. Each brought a unique style to their roles while enhancing the other’s presence.

Nearly five decades later, the excitement surrounding their reunion speaks for itself. Fans across generations are eager to see how the duo’s chemistry translates in today’s cinematic landscape. Kamal put it simply at the awards: “This may surprise many in the industry, but for us it was inevitable.”

    Nag Ashwin

    Malayalam actress to headline

If Monday’s reports of Nag Ashwin teaming up with Rajinikanth was all about excitement, there seems to be more news to the story than what meets the eye. We have learnt that the director is all set to launch his new female-centric film. The official announcement of the project, which is set to go on floors soon, is expected to be made after the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Singeetham Srinivas Rao worked as the script consultant for Nag Ashwin’s earlier directorial Kalki 2898 AD, starring Prabhas. And at a time when Nag was toying with a few story ideas, he came across Singeetham’s story and chanced upon it. In fact, last year, there were reports that Nag Ashwin would helm a female-centric film that stars Alia Bhatt. But those reports turned out to be untrue. And we have now learnt that a Malayalam actress would headline the new-age female-centric drama.

Nag Ashwin’s film is reportedly written by Singeetam Srinivasa RaoNag Ashwin's film is written by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao

    Wrap up female-centric film quickly

Since Prabhas’s film Kalki 2 would take time, Nag Ashwin wanted to complete a couple of films in the meantime. And a film with Rajinikanth and female-centric films are the ones the filmmaker chose to take up. A source close to the development reveals that Nag Ashwin is very excited with the story and wanted to take the film on floors at the earliest. Since the film with Rajinikanth is likely to go on floors next year around October, the director wants to wrap up the female-centric film and then move on to the superstar’s project.

Rajinikanth reminisces about Sarath Babu: If he would see me smoking, he would snatch the cigarette

    [ad_1]

In a heartfelt homage to his late actor friend Sarath Babu on Tuesday, Superstar Rajinikanth recalled the latter’s exhortation to give up smoking, stating the late veteran would even snatch away the counterfoil and put it out if he caught him doing so. After paying respects to Sarath Babu’s mortal remains here, Rajinikanth declared that, in consideration of his friend’s opinions, he would refrain from smoking in front of the actor.

The 71-year-old Sarath Babu passed away on Monday in a hospital in Hyderabad while receiving care for multiple organ failure.

Talking to a reporter, Rajinikanth stated that he knew Sarath Babu before he became an actor and also that they were good friends. He also said that the late actor was a very good human being, a good friend and always had a smile on his face.

He said, “I have never seen him getting serious or angry. You all know that all the films I acted with him are very big hits, Mullum Malarum, Muthu, Annamalai and Velaikkaran. He had great love and affection for me…he would always regret about me smoking, will ask me to quit it for a long life. If he would see me smoking, he would snatch the cigarette and put it out. So, I won’t smoke before him.”

“In Annamalai, there is this important scene of challenging (Rajinikanth taking on Sarath Babu after their friendship turns sour) and took lot of retakes as the emotions did not come out properly. He got me a cigarette and after that I felt relaxed and the take was approved. He always advised me about good health but he is no more now,” he added.
