  • A Publix sold a $250,000 lottery ticket. Another store had second win in 23 days

There was one jackpot win but two big winners among Wednesday’s Powerball, Florida Lotto, Cash4Life and Fantasy 5 drawings.

The Florida Lotto top prize in Saturday’s drawing will be $14 million after nobody hit the main drawing sextet of 2, 4, 43, 48, 52 and 53. But a Quick Pick ticket bought at a Naples Publix, 13550 Immokalee Rd., had the Double Play numbers — 12, 21, 29, 34, 47, 51 — and is worth $250,000.

For the second time in 23 days, Supermercados El Bodegon at 4704 Forest Hill Blvd. in unincorporated Palm Beach County sold a Fantasy 5 jackpot winning Quick Pick ticket. This time, it was for the evening draw, which came up 1, 11, 17, 23 and 31 and was worth $115,069.

These tickets must be cashed at the Florida Lottery main office in Tallahassee or one of the nine district offices throughout the state. The office in Palm Beach is a half mile east of El Bodegon, in Palm Springs at 4360 Forest Hill Blvd. and can be reached at WPBRC@flalottery.com or 561-640-6190. Appointments can be made, but aren’t necessary.

  • Publix sold Friday and Saturday’s only big money Florida Lottery jackpot winner

Two days of the major money Florida Lottery draw games produced only one big winner, someone who bought the ticket at a Publix.

Nobody won the top prize in Mega Millions, Powerball, Jackpot Triple Play (next draw: $2 million), Florida Lotto (next draw: $13 million), Cash4Life or three of the four Fantasy 5 drawings.

Saturday’s midday Fantasy 5 drawing came up 8, 13, 25, 30 and 33, which matched a Quick Pick ticket bought at a Plant City Publix, 2202 Jim Redman Pkwy. That’s a $60,090 hunk of luck.

This ticket needs to be cashed at the Florida Lottery main office in Tallahassee or one of the nine district offices, such as the one in Tampa at Centerpoint Business Park, 1911 U.S. 301 N. Like most of the offices, it’s open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments can be made, but aren’t required, at TAMRC@flalottery.com or 813-744-6134.

  • Here’s why bags of popcorn have been recalled at Publix and other stores

Peanuts and popcorn don’t always go together as shown by peanuts being the reason Cabot Creamery popcorn has been recalled nationwide.

Both manufacturer Jody Inc. and Publix announced the recall of Cabot Creamery Sea Salt Caramel Cheddar Popcorn on Friday.

READ MORE: Publix recalls ice cream after a possibly ‘serious or life-threatening’ mistake

Wednesday, Jody Inc. “was notified by The Farmer Companies, Inc. that it received two customers complaints of peanuts found in their bags of the product.”

Problem is, peanuts aren’t supposed to be with the popcorn. So, peanuts won’t be listed with the ingredients as a present allergen. What’s not a problem for most folks can be a mildly bad to ultimately bad problem for those with a peanut allergy.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the affected product,” the Jody-written, FDA-posted recall notice states.

  • Another radioactive shrimp recall involves Publix and Albertsons store brands

The latest recall of possibly radioactive shrimp yanks frozen shrimp sold under four brands, including store brands of Albertsons stores and Publix, was issued Friday.

AquaStar out of Seattle issued the recall.

All these recalls concern shrimp from Indonesian manufacturer PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, which does business as BMS Foods. In Miami, Los Angeles, Houston and Savannah, Customs & Border Protection agents found man-made radioactive isotope Cesium-137 (CS-137) in shipping containers. Follow-up FDA testing found Cs-137 in one sample of breaded shrimp.

“At this time, no product that has tested positive or alerted for Cesium-137 (Cs-137) has entered the U.S. marketplace,” the FDA said in the most recent update on Oct. 7. The agency says investigation has “determined that product from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati violates the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act in that it appears to have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with Cs-137 and may pose a safety concern.”

  • Publix to allow open carry in Florida stores, prompting mixed reactions from shoppers

Shoppers are split after supermarket chain Publix announced it will now allow customers to openly carry firearms inside its Florida stores.

The decision comes about two weeks after an appeals court ruling overturned the state’s ban on open carry

Under the law, businesses and private property owners can choose whether to allow or ban open carry on their premises.

They say it’s “where shopping is a pleasure,” but now, customers may see fellow shoppers walking the aisles with a pistol on their hip at their neighborhood Publix.

Some Publix customers support the move, others express safety concerns

“I believe it can cause unnecessary stress and drama,” Publix customer Scott Gonzalez said. “It needs to stop being political and it needs to be more about the safety of our community.”

Some shoppers say the change gives them a sense of awareness and control.

“I feel like if you’re going to carry a gun, I’d rather know that it’s on your person than be caught off guard and have it brought out without me even being aware,” customer Erica McKeon told CBS News Miami. “At least I can walk away from the person if I see a gun and I’m not comfortable.”

Others worry the sight of firearms in stores could cause anxiety.

“As someone that has a concealed carry permit, I’m not that against open carry,” customer Dominic Carissimi said. “But in terms of other people that aren’t used to being around guns and things like that, it can cause unnecessary, like, I guess, stress and anxiety.”

McKeon added, “I support our governor and I believe that if he’s allowing this that he has our best interests in mind.”

Publix cites compliance with Florida law and respect for customers

A Publix spokesperson released a statement, saying in part:

“Publix follows all federal, state and local laws. Treating customers with dignity and respect is a founding belief at Publix. In any instance where a customer creates a threatening, erratic, or dangerous shopping experience—whether they are openly carrying a firearm or not—we will engage local law enforcement to protect our customers and associates.”

Publix runs stores in eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

The grocery chain has more than 1,421 supermarket locations in those states, and over 900 location in Florida.

Open carry laws in other states where Publix operates

Several of the states where Publix operates already allowed some form of open carry, even before Florida’s recent policy change.

In Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, gun owners can generally carry firearms openly without a permit, though each state has its own set of restrictions.

Alabama, Georgia and Kentucky all have so-called “permitless carry” laws, which allow most adults legally allowed to possess a firearm to carry it openly or concealed.

North Carolina and Tennessee also permit open carry, while South Carolina’s legislature recently joined that group by passing a law allowing people to carry handguns openly without a permit.

Virginia also allows open carry, though its rules are more restrictive than most of its southern neighbors. Local governments there can prohibit firearms in certain public areas, and restrictions apply to specific types of guns, including semi-automatic weapons in some localities.

In all, that means nearly every state on Publix’s operating map already permitted open carry in some form.

It is unclear if the grocery chain allows open carry in its stores in other states beside Florida. In 2019, Publix’s publicly stated that it “respectfully requests that only law enforcement officials openly carry firearms in our stores,” even in states where open carry is legally allowed.

Winn-Dixie takes a different stance on Florida open carry

While Publix is allowing open carry, competitors like Winn-Dixie say they will not permit customers to openly carry firearms inside their stores.

  • ‘I want to revitalize downtown’: Former Walgreens is now Azalea Fresh Market

Photo by Donnell Suggs/The Atlanta Voice
A rendering of the Azalea Fresh Market on Peachtree Street. Rendering provided by City of Atlanta

There was no red ribbon outside the front door of the Azalea Fresh Market as political dignitaries and business leaders waited for the exact moment to begin the first tour of the store. The market is located at the corner of Peachtree St. and Edgewood Avenue, and directly across the street from Woodruff Park.

What was once a Walgreens with people sitting and sometimes lying outside is now supposed to be an answer to changing downtown Atlanta’s status as a food desert. The store resembles your average Publix, with clean floors, well-lit sections, fresh fruit and vegetables, and high-end candies, like Tony’s chocolate bars.

Photo by Donnell Suggs/The Atlanta Voice

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, Invest Atlanta President & CEO Dr. Eloisa Klementich, and Savi Provisions President Paul Nair attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“I want to revitalize Downtown,” Dickens said as he and others were given a tour of the first floor of the market by Nair, some of his family members, and staff. “This is our vision coming true.”

According to Nair, Azalea Fresh Market was designed by architects at the Savannah School of Art & Design (SCAD). The second floor, which was not part of the Mayor’s and media’s tour on Thursday morning, will have two restaurants. The second floor will be accessible via escalators and an elevator. The store will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.

Asked about what could be done to prevent any security issues with the market being open till 10 p.m., Dickens said there will be plenty of eyes on the first supermarket in the Five Points area in decades.

“We are very well aware of the need to maintain safety and security. Businesses thrive when they don’t have the uncertainty of crime,” Dickens said. “We made a commitment to this location, to Savi, and to the residents and businesses of downtown, that we are going to make sure it is safe.”

Photo by Donnell Suggs/The Atlanta Voice

Dickens said there are cameras and security systems in place for added security. The 61st Mayor of Atlanta added that the Atlanta Police Department, Georgia State Police, and the Central Atlanta Progress Downtown Ambassadors are all routinely on the scene and will provide an extra layer of security.

Photo by Donnell Suggs/The Atlanta Voice

“I think there’s a lot of eyes on this,” Dickens said. “So, when you have a lot of activity, the more shoppers you have, the more business that is going on, and that provides safety.”

During the tour at the back of the store, Dickens credited Nair for the prices of the protein powder. Dickens said he uses similar products and pays equal prices for them.

“We absolutely want to be cheaper than Walmart,” Nair told Dickens.

The Olympia Building, home of the large Coca-Cola clock on top of the building, in which Azalea Fresh Market is housed, has been a landmark for many years. The nearly 100-year-old building has been home to several businesses, including bank branches, and Tom Pitt’s Soda Fountain in the early 1900s.

Azalea Fresh Market is not a cheap solution to Downtown Atlanta being a food desert, but it is an answer.

“Y’all did it,” Dickens said to Nair and company. “We set the vision and y’all made it happen.”

Just hear those sleigh bells jingling … because Christmas is almost here! With only days remaining until Christmas Eve, now is the time to start making your grocery list and checking it twice — especially if you have plans to host a dinner or party this holiday season.

While you are bound to head to the grocery store to get everything you need well in advance of the big day, you certainly wouldn’t be the first to run out of the essentials, like eggs, milk, and sugar, at the last minute. Before you head to Publix in a pinch on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, you’ll want to be aware of the store’s hours to help ensure your last-minute errands go off without a hitch.

    What Are Publix’s Christmas Hours?

Every year Christmas Eve is celebrated on December 24, and this year the holiday falls on a Sunday, and Christmas Day follows on Monday, December 25. Publix will open its doors for regular store hours on Christmas Eve and most locations will close at 7 p.m., although hours will likely vary from store to store, so you’ll want to check with your local Publix for store-specific information. On Christmas Day, however, Publix will be closed. The store will reopen and resume business as usual on Tuesday, December 26.

Publix is beloved not only for its wide assortment of grocery items, but also for its wealth of prepared foods, including its made-to-order subs. If you’re planning to visit Publix for the first time this holiday season, there are a handful of things you should know before you go, not the least of which is that Publix’s bakery is not to be missed.

  • $200,000 worth of supplies distributed to Palm Beach County schools during giveaway event

$200,000 worth of supplies distributed to Palm Beach County schools during giveaway event

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. — Hundreds of students in Palm Beach County will receive free, new school supplies next week thanks to the annual Tools for Schools program.

For the 20th year, Red Apple Supplies, the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County‘s free teacher resource store, partnered with Publix Super Markets to distribute more than $201,000 essential school supplies to teachers from 120 Title I district schools.

Teachers and principals drove up to the Red Apple supply store in Riviera Beach as early as 8 a.m. to receive the supplies from volunteers, forming a line long enough to wrap around the building and continue down the street.

Volunteers loaded cars up with supplies while others served hot chocolate and sweets.

Education Foundation Chairman Jim Moore also served as a disc jockey for the event while a barbershop quartet serenaded drivers while they waited for the supplies. Santa Claus even paid a visit to the event.

Palm Beach County Superintendent Michael Burke said the event is especially needed with one in five district students at the poverty level.

“This goes a long way to make sure kids have the supplies they need to stay in the classroom,” Burke said.

Dwayne Dennard, the principal of Pahokee middle and high schools, seconded Burke’s words, emphasizing the need for supplies.

    WPTV

Dwayne Dennard, the principal of Pahokee middle and high schools, explains the importance of the free school supplies for his students.

Dennard said 99% of the students in his two schools are on a free or reduced meal program, indicating a significant financial need.

“Without these supplies, a lot of our kids cannot reach their full potential,” Dennard said. “There are some kids that we lost because we didn’t have these types of supplies. It’s a great opportunity for parents and students with the way inflation is now.”

The supplies distributed included everything from notebooks to headphones and more.

Burke said the supplies will be distributed to students in school next week.

  • JustBOGOS, First of Its Kind Grocery Savings App, Expands to Android

JustBOGOS, First of Its Kind Grocery Savings App, Expands to Android

JustBOGOS provides those who don’t have the time to clip coupons or search the weekly ads, with a way to save effortlessly on groceries.

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 7, 2017

JustBOGOS, the first-of-its-kind grocery savings app, is now available on both Android and iPhone, with the recent launch of the Android app.  The free app saves Users money effortlessly on their groceries by distributing BOGO (Buy One, Get One) alerts to ensure that Users never miss their favorite grocery BOGO deals again.  The app currently sends alerts to Florida residents who shop at Publix, Winn-Dixie and Sedano’s supermarkets, and last month began expansion into North Carolina with Publix alerts.

JustBOGOS is a simple yet revolutionary concept.  After a User signs up and confirms their location and preferred grocery stores, they gain access to a consolidated “at-a-glance” summary of all local Buy One, Get One sales currently available across multiple supermarkets:  All in one place.  Then, each week when new BOGO’s become available, Users receive an alert which contains the quick-reading list all of the new BOGO’s.

The app has been featured twice on the front page of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel’s Money section, lots of new Users join daily, and last month expanded outside of Florida, beginning with Charlotte, North Carolina. The startup is also seeking business partnership opportunities.

    Jason Taub, Founder, JustBOGOS

Items are sorted by store and department, and can be added to a custom Shopping List for quick in-store access.  Users can also add their favorite brands or products to their list of Favorites within the app, for custom alerts when any of those items become BOGO in their local supermarkets.  Between these features and the built-in Notepad feature, users have on-the-go access to their grocery shopping list and complete control over the type of alerts they receive and how they’d like to receive them – Via app notifications, email, or both.

Knowledge is power.  With JustBOGOS, knowledge equals savings and Users are always in-the-know of what’s currently BOGO at any given moment, allowing them to stock up on their favorites.  JustBOGOS provides those who don’t have the time to clip coupons or search the weekly ads, with a way to save effortlessly by receiving instant notifications of which BOGO sales are currently available and where to get them.

The initial concept launched in 2014 in the form of email-based alerts from JustBOGOS.com.  Due to the popularity of the free service, work on the iOS app began quickly, and the app for iPhone and iPad launched in November 2015.  Most recently, in late 2016, the Android version of the app was launched.  The app is available in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, completely free.  Those who prefer email-based alerts only can sign up at www.JustBOGOS.com.

When JustBOGOS Founder Jason Taub was asked where the idea came from, he explains how he grew tired of driving to the grocery store, picking up the weekly ad, manually searching for his favorite BOGO sales, only to find out that none of them were available.  He wished there was a way he could receive an alert every time his favorite groceries became BOGO.  The problem was, there was nothing out there like it.  So that’s when Taub set out to build it.

JustBOGOS is continuously expanding.  The app has been featured twice on the front page of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel’s Money section, lots of new Users join daily, and last month expanded outside of Florida, beginning with Charlotte, North Carolina.  The startup is also seeking business partnership opportunities.

The app is available to both iOS and Android Users by searching for “JustBOGOS in the app stores, or by going to www.JustBOGOS.com.

    Press Release

    Feb 17, 2016

JustBOGOS, the South Florida based startup which sends free grocery BOGO (Buy One, Get One) alerts and provides a consolidated list of all local BOGO’s across multiple supermarkets, has launched version 1.2 of the app which is available for iPhone and iPad.

The latest version of the JustBOGOS app includes a variety of speed and stability enhancements, enabling it to become the most user-friendly, in-store grocery savings app.  After all, who wouldn’t want a simple, consolidated list of all BOGO’s from multiple supermarkets, at their fingertips while on-the-go?

Since the launch of the app just several months ago, the response has been tremendous. It has received such positive feedback that new features are in the works and the growth for JustBOGOS looks more promising than ever.

    Jason Taub, Founder

The app allows Users to browse All BOGO (Buy One, Get One) sales across multiple local grocery stores, in a consolidated, quick-reading list sorted by supermarket and department.  While browsing this list of All BOGO’s, Users can select the items they intend to purchase and they are added to their JustBOGOS Shopping List, another in-app feature, for quick access while in the supermarket.

The app also sends Custom BOGO Alerts.  Here’s how it works:  Users add their favorite or most frequently purchased groceries to their virtual JustBOGOS Cart.  The moment any of these items goes BOGO at a supermarket in the User’s location, they receive an alert.  With the JustBOGOS app, the days of missing favorite grocery BOGO sales are long gone.

The Shopping List feature consolidates all selected BOGO’s from multiple supermarkets into a simple, categorized list.  A Notepad is also included for free-form reminders.  All User data and settings from within the app are instantly synced and can be accessed from any desktop computer, tablet, or web browser within any mobile device.

The JustBOGOS app is free to download and available in the App Store for  iPhone and iPad – Download here.  For those without an iOS device, JustBOGOS offers their popular email alerts which can be obtained by signing up at JustBOGOS.com.  Let the effortless savings begin!
