  • Orange County driver killed when pursuit suspect crashes into their vehicle

    [ad_1]

A police pursuit that started in Anaheim on Wednesday night ended with the suspect’s vehicle colliding with another car, killing the driver, officials said.

A driver who fled a traffic stop led Anaheim police into the neighboring city of Placentia, said Anaheim police Sgt. Eric Anderson.

The suspect crashed into another vehicle near the intersection of Bradford and Madison avenues, killing the other driver, Anderson said.

A third vehicle was then struck in the crash and that driver suffered minor injuries, he said. The suspect who fled police was taken into custody.

“I saw a car driving like at least 70 mph, and he ran the red light, so I was able to break in time,” Maria Torres told KABC. “I just saw the cops running behind him. It seemed like it was a pursuit, so I called 911 and it confirmed that it was a pursuit. It must’ve been like less than a foot away from hitting me.”

The identity of the driver was not immediately available. Police did not provide details on why they had initially contacted the suspect.

  • ‘Wild and dangerous’ police chase halts traffic on I-270 in Montgomery Co. – WTOP News

    [ad_1]

A “wild and dangerous police pursuit” that started in Frederick County, Maryland, came to a stop on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County.

WTOP Traffic Reporter Dave Dildine reports on the wrong way driver during the police pursuit

A “wild and dangerous police pursuit” that started in Frederick County, Maryland, came to a stop on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County.

It happened Friday during the afternoon rush. WTOP’s Traffic Center fielded several calls from panicked listeners who said they saw someone driving southbound on I-270 “lane-splitting the northbound lanes and going head-first into oncoming traffic,” WTOP Traffic reporter Dave Dildine said.

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook that its deputies were involved in the pursuit as it continued into Montgomery County. The driver of the vehicle, a man, was detained and the sheriff’s office said there is “no further threat to the community.”

The pursuit came to a stop when the driver crashed near the Comus Road overpass in Clarksburg, Dildine said.

WTOP’s news partner 7News reports that the man then jumped out of the car while holding a child, using them as a hostage.

All lanes of I-270 were shutdown for more than an hour during the standoff. Hundreds of drivers idled in place between Route 121 and Route 109 as police worked to bring the situation under control.

The Maryland State Highway Administration diverted northbound traffic at Father Hurley Boulevard while southbound drivers were sent onto Route 109 into Hyattstown. Long backups formed on nearby Route 355 and Route 27.

All lanes of I-270 reopened shortly before 7 p.m.

WTOP’s Abigail Constantino and Dave Dildine contributed to this report.

  • Priceville police pursuit ends in Hartselle with one teen dead and multiple injuries

    [ad_1]

    Generate Key Takeaways

Sep. 7—A high-speed Priceville police pursuit Saturday evening ended in a crash that caused multiple injuries and killed a 17-year-old in Hartselle who was not in the car being chased, according to authorities.

The wreck comes less than two weeks after another Priceville police pursuit reached 120 mph and went 28 miles before ending with the chased vehicle crashing into other vehicles in Huntsville.

On Saturday night, Hartselle police said that at about 8:30 p.m., “… Priceville Police Department was engaged in a vehicle pursuit that entered the jurisdiction of the City of Hartselle on Highway 36. As the pursuit approached the intersection of Highway 31 the suspect vehicle entered the intersection and a vehicle crash occurred, resulting in multiple injuries and 6 transported to local hospitals. The suspect has been taken into custody.”

Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn on Sunday said a 17-year-old died in the wreck and another person was at UAB Hospital in critical condition.

The chase, which went about 8 miles, went through downtown Hartselle before reaching the busy Alabama 36/U.S. 31 intersection where the crash occurred.

The identity of the suspect being chased, the Priceville police officer in pursuit, and the identity of the teen who was killed have not been released. It also was not clear what prompted the pursuit, although a dispatch from PPD at the time indicated it was for a “moving violation.”

The Priceville police pursuit on Aug. 28 was prompted by a 17-month-old Decatur felony warrant, according to authorities. Decatur police discontinued the chase when it reached high speeds on Interstate 565.

    [ad_1]

BRIGHTON, Colo. — The 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office on Friday filed multiple charges against a man accused of a woman’s death and a string of incidents that occurred in Brighton and Adams County last week.

The Brighton Police Department said this case started shortly after 11 a.m. on Aug. 28, when officers responded to Murphy’s Express off E. Bromley Lane after receiving reports that a suspect had approached a man at a fuel pump, showed his firearm and tried to steal the man’s car. The man refused, and during their altercation, “a shot was fired,” police said.

The suspect fled on a bicycle. The victim had a minor injury.

Suspect arrested after allegedly shooting at Brighton PD, fleeing from police

Police were able to gather a description of the suspect. A few blocks from Murphy Express, they found evidence that was connected with the suspect, but no other details on that were released.

When officers spoke with witnesses, their descriptions of the suspect matched the suspect from Murphy’s Express. One witness, who knew the suspect, provided information about where he may have gone, police said.

When officers found the stolen car, they saw the suspect, identified as James “Jaime” Benavidez, 50, of Brighton, inside. They tried to stop him, but he drove off and led officers on a pursuit while firing several rounds at police, the department said.

  • Child unharmed during police pursuit in Denver metro area; two people arrested

    [ad_1]

AURORA, Colo. — A child was unharmed, and two people were arrested following a police pursuit in the Denver metro area Wednesday.

Around 5 p.m., detectives with the Aurora Police Department’s Robbery Investigative Unit spotted a Volvo sedan that was connected to a home invasion that occurred earlier in the day in the 1300 block of Idalia Court. The Volvo was seen driving near East Colfax Avenue and South Peoria Street.

Aurora PD said its detectives started following the vehicle while additional officers responded to the area as backup.

Officers initiated a traffic stop on the Volvo near Quebec Street and Northfield Boulevard. The driver did not stop, according to Aurora police, and a “pursuit was authorized.”

During the pursuit, the Volvo crashed into an uninvolved vehicle in the 5100 block of Quebec Street. The uninvolved driver was not injured, according to police.

Officers detained the Volvo’s female driver and the male passenger. Detectives also found a “young child” in the vehicle. The child’s age is not known at this time, but Aurora PD said they are approximately 3 years old.

Aurora police said officers did not previously see the child due to the Volvo’s dark-tinted windows. The department identified the Volvo passenger as the child’s father.

The child was unharmed and was returned to their mother, who came to the scene after the crash.

The man and woman were booked into the Aurora Municipal Detention Center. Aurora PD said the woman was arrested for felony eluding and child abuse. She is also suspected in the Idalia Court home invasion, but charges are pending further investigation.

The man was booked on an outstanding warrant, and additional charges are pending further investigation.

The Denver Police Department is investigating the crash, according to Aurora PD.

  • New Trump executive order relaxes chase policies for US Park Police – WTOP News

    [ad_1]

The U.S. Park Police now has a less restrictive policy when it comes to police pursuits. The Trump administration is framing it as part of its stepped-up efforts in D.C.

The U.S. Park Police now has a less restrictive policy when it comes to police pursuits. Officials in President Donald Trump’s administration are framing the change as part of its stepped-up crime effort in D.C.

The new police pursuit rules are part of an Aug. 25 White House executive order, which said park police can use all applicable laws to maintain public safety and public order.

“The Director of the National Park Service shall, subject to the availability of appropriations and applicable law, hire additional members of the United States Park Police in the District of Columbia to support the policy goals described in Executive Order 14333,” the order said. “The United States Park Police shall ensure enforcement of all applicable laws within their jurisdiction, including the Code of the District of Columbia, to help maintain public safety and proper order.”

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who oversees the U.S. Park Police, explained the new rules during a recent Cabinet meeting, which he said are a significant change.

“I was shocked to find out when we were talking to them that, ‘you pull somebody over and they just drive away and you can’t pursue them?’ and they said, ‘No we can’t,’” Burgum said. “We got that rule changed in 24 hours because of President Trump’s leadership.”

He said previously, suspects would mock police when they fled, saying you can’t pursue us.

“The next night they had so much fun, they pulled people over, they chased them, they stopped them,” he said. “The bad guys in the cars said, ‘You’re not supposed to chase us. You’re breaking the rules.’”

But, in a statement, the Fraternal Order of Police said, “Senior Leadership from the Fraternal Order of Police, the United States Park Police, and the Department of the Interior — on behalf of directives from the White House — negotiated an interim vehicle pursuit modification to our current General Order.”

The statement said Park Police recognizes the need for “levelheaded judgment and safety for the public and our officers,” and said the interim pursuit policy will be in effect until a permanent policy is negotiated with the agency.

“We support a policy that responsibly balances enforcement with safety and look forward to its permanent implementation,” the police union said.

  • Pedestrian struck and killed during police chase in East Orange, New Jersey

Pedestrian struck and killed during police chase in East Orange, New Jersey

    [ad_1]

EAST ORANGE, New Jersey (WABC) — An investigation is underway after a police pursuit of a vehicle ended with a pedestrian being struck and killed in East Orange, New Jersey.

The incident unfolded around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, beginning as a police pursuit that started in Bloomfield.

Mailman Anthony Gordon was out delivering just a few blocks away when he saw the cops chasing after someone.

“Four law enforcement cars – they came down with sirens on. High speed,” he said.

The chase eventually ended in East Orange, where a pedestrian was struck on Park Avenue between Washington Street and Glenwood Avenue in the Marin Park area.

A tan vehicle, a black sedan and an ambulance were all involved in the crash. The airbags of the ambulance deployed after being hit by the sedan.

A witness told Eyewitness News reporter Michelle Charlesworth that the victim was walking on the sidewalk when they were struck.

“They were coming up Prospect. He was going at least like 60. So, by the time he came past Glenwood – he tried to make that left by the school and he didn’t make it. He clipped some car and that’s when he hit somebody else,” said witness Raheem Rogers said.

Rogers says he saw one man taken into custody.

He says he sits on the porch all the time and watches people speed through the area.

“It’s like a raceway. People just speed through here,” he said.

Residents say a police pursuit is extra risky in the area because of how many pedestrians there are. There’s a day care and bank nearby, and a playground right across the street.

Gordon said it could’ve been him that got hit.

“I’m just happy that I wasn’t in the area when it happened because this is my delivery area also, so, I’m just happy because I could have gotten hit too,” he said.

Who police were pursuing, and why remains unclear.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating the crash.

  • The 91 Freeway standoff began with a domestic violence investigation, ended in a suicide

The 91 Freeway standoff began with a domestic violence investigation, ended in a suicide

    [ad_1]

A police pursuit that halted traffic for six hours on the 91 Freeway began with a Corona police investigation of a man accused of violating a domestic violence retraining order and ended with his suicide on the roadway.

Efrain Quezada, 40, of La Puente was being investigated by the Corona Police Department days before the Friday pursuit, said police Cpl. Tobias Kouroubacalis.

Corona officers were actively searching for Quezada, who was accused of stalking, making criminal threats and violating a domestic violence restraining order.

When officers found Quezada on Friday at around 8:05 a.m. they tried to conduct a traffic stop in the area of McKinley Street and Griffin Way in Corona, but he refused to pull over.

Instead, he led officers on a chase on the westbound side of the 91 Freeway for about 15 minutes before he stopped his blue four-door sedan in the middle of the roadway.

The Anaheim and Corona police departments used their armored vehicles to box in the sedan so he couldn’t move the car.

“Nearly the entire time, [Corona Police crisis negotiators] were on the phone with him, off and on, trying to negotiate a peaceful surrender,” Kouroubacalis said.

Both sides of the freeway were closed for about six hours because of the standoff. The California Highway Patrol directed motorists behind the standoff to exit the freeway.

The negotiation process proved fruitless, and Quezada ended his life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound around noon, Kouroubacalis said.

Traffic on the eastbound side of the 91 Freeway began flowing again around 12:45 p.m., but the westbound side remained closed until 3:48 p.m. as the Orange County Coroner’s Office and forensic team conducted their investigation , according to the Caltrans District 12 account on the social media platform X.

During the standoff, law enforcement vehicles created a barrier between Quezada and the miles-long line of waiting drivers.

Kouroubacalis said he is aware that people complained about the traffic.

“Our response to that is, if it was their family member or friend, they would want us or any law enforcement agency to take reasonable efforts to bring him out of the car peacefully,” he said.

“We did everything we could to get him to voluntarily comply with us and come out of the car, but it just did not work,” Kouroubacalis said.
