  • More Than 200,000 Pounds of Deli Meat Have Been Recalled by Boar’s Head

More Than 200,000 Pounds of Deli Meat Have Been Recalled by Boar’s Head

On July 26, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of Boar’s Head Provisions Co. ready-to-eat liverwurst products after a sample collected by the Maryland Department of Health tested positive for listeria monocytogenes. All ready-to-eat liverwurst products, as well as any other deli meats that were produced on that same line, are being recalled. This adds up to over 207,500 pounds of deli meat products.

This particular recall is part of a larger listeria outbreak on deli meats from earlier this summer. As of July 25, a total of 34 people have been identified as sick across 13 states, with 33 hospitalizations and two deaths. Samples from these sick people state that the products were produced between May 29 and July 12, 2024.

Food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, which can result in side effects including fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. The FDA warns that anyone who is pregnant, older than 65, or has a weakened immune system could have a serious infection. If you or someone you love is experiencing these symptoms after consuming deli meat, be sure to get medical attention immediately and safely discard the food. You can do so by throwing away these products or returning them to the place of purchase. Then be sure to clean out your fridge thoroughly to avoid cross contamination; listeria thrives and spreads in cold environments.

Recalled Deli Meats from the FDA

As for the Boar’s Head recall, here are the particular recalled deli meats to look out for.

First, the ready-to-eat liverwurst products produced between June 11 and July 17, 2024.

Other ready-to-eat deli meat products produced on June 27, 2024 were also recalled, which includes the following:

The FDA will continue updating the public on this listeria outbreak for deli meats, so be sure to keep a close eye on any updates posted on its website.

If I’m being honest, I’ve always been a zip-top plastic bag guy. Whether it’s wrapping up leftovers, packing sandwiches that I take to work, or portioning out meal prep ingredients, my fridge is usually full of the tight-sealing baggies. However, since my little sister is always pestering me about single-use plastics and trying to make my kitchen more sustainable (and since it’s the right thing to do, if you can) I decided to test out some reusable silicone bags. That being said, I’ve heard the horror stories about this sort of product leaking in the fridge — or being impossible to ever really get clean — so I knew I had to spring for some quality items. That’s why I chose the OXO Good Grips Silicone Reusable Bags. OXO is an editor-favorite brand that never disappoints in quality or style, so I knew their reusable bags were probably going to be up to snuff. Spoiler alert: They rock.

What Are the OXO Good Grips Silicone Reusable Bags?

These durable silicone bags from editor-favorite brand OXO feature a seamless design that makes them a snap to clean. The food-grade silicone construction keeps food fresh for longer, and the dust-resistant finish keeps unwanted particles away. Plus, they’re made with a wide opening for “fumble-free filling,” and the secure seal keeps food contained at home and on the go, and prevents those gnarly fridge leaks that I mentioned earlier. They’re available in a variety of flat and stand-up (we’ll get to that) sizes and colors as well.

Why I Love the OXO Good Grips Silicone Reusable Bags

These OXO Good Grips Silicone Reusable Bags do exactly what they say they’re going to do: keep food fresh, eliminate plastic bag usage in the fridge and on the go, and (probably) save you some money in the long run by not having to stock up on zip-tops all the time. However, the coolest part of the OXO Good Grips Silicone Reusable Bags, in my opinion, are the stand-up models. They’re essentially your standard silicone reusable bags, but they’re able to, well, stand up on their own while you fill them. I personally love this feature, since trying to fill a normal zip-top with food — especially straight from a pan — is usually a two-person job, where one person holds the bag open and one person pours. With the stand-up bags, this is no longer an issue.

Plus, I’m not the only one who’s a fan of these bad boys. “I’ve tried multiple brands of reusable silicone kitchen bags, and honestly most of them have been a disappointment,” one reviewer wrote. “In my opinion, OXO has finally cracked the code on making reusable silicone bags feel simple and usable, like conventional plastic bags. Actually, I would say this bag is even easier to seal than a traditional zip-top style bag. The lip of the bag is large and easy to align when you want to seal it up. There’s also a nice positive locking sensation when you push the two halves together, so you know it’s sealed.”

So, if you’re looking for some reusable bags that actually work, don’t spill in your fridge, and help you cut down on plastic (and save money in the long run) you can’t go wrong with the OXO Good Grips Silicone Reusable Bags.

Looking for a clever way to use up that watermelon? While you could always blend it to make watermelon popsicles or toss cubes in a refreshing feta salad, if you’re looking for something a little boozier (that isn’t a watermelon margarita, of course), then you’re absolutely going to love these watermelon-infused Tajin tequila bites.

To make it, cube the watermelon into bite-sized pieces. Transfer the watermelon bites into a jar that can seal, then pour tequila into the jar until it is completely full. Seal the jar and place it in the fridge for 24 hours. When it’s time to snack, simply pierce a piece of watermelon with a fork and sprinkle the outside with Tajin.

According to the creator, this snack is the perfect blend of salty and sweet, while simultaneously refreshing, making it the ideal snack to enjoy for a summer happy hour. And foodies on TikTok absolutely love it. “I gotta try this,” comments a TikTok user. “I’ll take 7 or 70 pieces,” says another.

Some viewers are also sharing their own renditions of this tasty, refreshing snack. “Needs a fresh squeeze of lime,” someone commented. Adding a dash or two of hot sauce, or even a sprinkle of salt, could also enhance the flavor of this boozy snack. Others even say this recipe works well with other sweet fruits, such as fresh sliced mango or even green grapes.

The best part? Once you polish off the watermelon bites, you’re left with a jar of watermelon-infused tequila, perfect for any clever cocktails you plan on making this summer, like a refreshing glass of ranch water, a Palermo cocktail, or a clever twist on a tequila sunrise.

While we love tasty strips of bacon or cured meats on a charcuterie board, it isn’t surprising to report that these particular foods aren’t the best for our health long term. While they certainly are great once in a while, eating them regularly can increase the risk of a number of chronic diseases — and another recent study has proven this point even further.

According to the recent study published by The Lancet Planetary Health Journal, reducing intake of processed meats — like bacon, hot dogs, and cured meats — by 30 percent could end in fewer occurrences of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer, and fewer all-cause deaths in a 10-year period. What’s more, the study also found that a 30 percent reduction in unprocessed meats — like beef and pork — also reduced the number of occurrences of the same conditions.

To find this information, researchers evaluated data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, evaluating different scenarios using previous risk models, evaluating the disease outcome for survey respondents with reductions of 5 percent, 10 percent, 30 percent, 50 percent, 75 percent, and 100 percent of processed and unprocessed meat consumption. Researchers concluded that a reduction of processed meat in one’s diet could “reduce the burdens of some chronic disease in the USA.” In terms of unprocessed meats, the study concludes that more research needs to be done before estimating the effects of reducing the amount of these types of meats in one’s diet.

The American Heart Association (AHA) has suggested a reduction in red and processed meats for heart health for some time now, given the way high saturated fat intake can increase the risk of chronic disease. One 2022 study even found that some chemicals (gut microbes) produced in the digestive tract after eating red meat could also be the reason for increased disease risk. The AHA recommends limiting saturated fat intake to only 13 grams a day.

What does it really mean to reduce your processed meat intake by 30 percent? The Cardiovascular Health Diet Index suggests keeping the average red meat consumption to no more than 200 grams a week, and processed meat consumption no more than 100 grams a week. To put this into context, a strip of bacon averages around 30 grams, so this recommendation advises limiting bacon intake to 3 or 4 slices a week max.

Jennifer Garner might be the most down-to-earth, relatable celebrity to have walked the red carpet. With the popularity of her Pretend Cooking Show on Instagram, the fact that she doesn’t take herself too seriously, and her genuine love and affection for her family, I’ve become a real fan. So when she and her mom, Pat, made their viral blackberry cobbler recipe on The Today Show, I was excited to try it.  What really convinced me, though, was when Pat said she’d already made it three times that week for several potlucks because “it’s easy and everyone loves it.” A dessert that promised to be both easy and crowd-pleasing? Sign me up!

Get the recipe: Jennifer Garner’s Blackberry Cobbler

How to Make Jennifer Garner’s Blackberry Cobbler

While it’s now known as Jennifer’s cobbler, the original creator of this now-viral recipe is Mrs. Lantz, a neighbor and longtime friend of Pat. Here’s how to make it:

Start by preheating your oven to 425°F and greasing a small baking dish. Add four cups of fresh blackberries to the pan. There’s no need to be precious about drying them, just give them a quick wash. Then drizzle a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice and a 1/4 teaspoon of almond extract over the berries for a little flavor boost, and toss everything to combine.

In a medium bowl, mix together one cup each of sugar and flour with a quarter teaspoon of salt. Lightly whisk an egg and stir it into the flour mixture. Then, use your fingers to bring it together in clumps. The mixture will be somewhat moist with some smaller clumps of batter formed, but not all of the dry ingredients will be incorporated into the crumble, and that’s “no big deal,” according to Jen. Pinch off clumps of batter with your fingers and rustically scatter them over the blackberries. It’ll create a delicious, crumbly topping as it bakes. Finally, melt six tablespoons of unsalted butter and drizzle it over the entire dish. Pop the pan into the oven for about 25 minutes or until golden and bubbling.

I’ve got to hand it to Jennifer and her mom; this cobbler is a winner. The first time I made it, my kitchen filled with the most delicious aroma of warm berries and butter. When I pulled it out of the oven, golden and bubbling, I knew we were in for a treat. The blackberries cooked down into a tangy, sweet jam that perfectly balanced the buttery, lightly crisp topping. My whole family raved about it, even my husband, who usually passes on dessert.

I also shared some with our neighbors and was told that their daughter’s eyes practically popped out of her head — it was that good. The following day, I was flooded with follow-up texts saying things like, “It’s very delicious … thanks again for bringing it over,” and “The best part was how crispy the top was. Best cobbler topping I’ve had!” and “If you have a link to the recipe, please send it!” Based on that, I’d say it was a huge success.

Tips and Swaps for Making Jennifer Garner’s Blackberry Cobbler

I can’t recommend making this cobbler enough. It’s the perfect combination of impressive and effortless — ideal for family dinners and potlucks. Plus, it’s endlessly customizable, so you’ll never get bored. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or a kitchen novice, this recipe is a surefire (easy) way to end any meal on a high note.

  • Shoppers Swear This Air Fryer Toaster Oven Is the “Best Investment” They Ever Made (It’s on Sale!)

Shoppers Swear This Air Fryer Toaster Oven Is the “Best Investment” They Ever Made (It’s on Sale!)

    [ad_1]

The Kitchn received compensation for this post, which was written and edited independently by our editorial team.

Before I got one for myself, I was a bit skeptical about toaster ovens. To be fair, I’m generally hesitant to buy any small appliance, but I couldn’t ever convince myself that it was worth sacrificing counter space for in my tiny kitchen. But like countless other shoppers who’ve left rave reviews online, as well as numerous Kitchn editors, I’m firmly on Team Toaster Oven now. It’s replaced nearly all of my other appliances; who needs a toaster and microwave when you have one of these bad boys? Even better, my toaster oven has an air frying function, so I don’t need one of those anymore, either.

Toaster ovens come in all shapes and sizes and prices, so it’s not always easy to know where to start. You want yours to have as many functions as possible, be easy to operate, and ideally, look nice on your countertop. You can be sure that Breville’s products will check those boxes; we’re fans of its espresso machines, microwaves, and a number of its toaster ovens, including the Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro. It’s a bit pricey, but we (and hundreds of shoppers) can tell you firsthand how worth it it is. Here’s why you should snag it while it’s going for $100 less.

What is the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro?

Like me, contributor Marshall wasn’t sure of toaster ovens until this one changed her mind. While researching models to give to her sister as a gift, Breville’s Smart Oven stood out to Marshall amidst a sea of ovens that toast unevenly, offer poor controls, and have overall faulty designs. “Breville solves all these problems, and improves on the competition,” she wrote. “In fact, I’d go as far as saying using it is a … delight.”

Why? “The Smart Oven actually makes it easy to toggle between functions — something I’ve never even bothered to do with other toaster ovens,” Marshall explained in her review. “Things are clearly labeled, and any adjustments within each setting (like number of slices of bread and desired darkness) are easy to figure out as well.” Further, it has a magnet that pulls out the rack for you, and you can slide the bottom out for easy cleaning. Most importantly, it has 13 settings: toast, bagel, broil, bake, roast, warm, pizza, proof, air fry, reheat, cookies, slow cook with high/low settings, and dehydrate.

Sure, it takes up about a cubic foot on your counter, but its multiple functions make up for it — and you can fit a 9- by 13-inch baking pan or 13-inch pizza inside of it. Best of all, with how little you’ll be using your full-size oven, you’ll save a ton of money on your electric bill, and you can turn the inside of your oven into extra storage!

    What QVC Shoppers are Saying

Several hundred more reviews echo Marshall and the above shoppers, so you can be confident that you won’t regret the splurge. Still, you don’t have to get the Smart Oven at full price. QVC is offering it at $100 less than usual. If you’re new to QVC, you can use the code HELLO30 for another $30 off, so if I were you, I’d hurry!

Buy: Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro, $299.95 (normally $399.95)

    [ad_1]

We independently select these products—if you buy from one of our links, we may earn a commission. All prices were accurate at the time of publishing.

Picture this: it’s a smash burger and a Cuban sandwich all wrapped in one. That’s right, the perfect two-in-one combination smash burger bursting with all kinds of flavor, topped with ham and cheese and pickles like a proper Cuban sandwich. Cameron Diaz shared this brilliant creation in partnership with William Sonoma at an event in Napa Valley, showing off her favorite Cuban smash burger sandwich that pairs well with a bottle of Avaline Rosé, from the wine company she co-founded. The recipe sounded intriguing enough to me, with ingredients that you wouldn’t normally see in a burger patty, so I had to give it a try. Here’s what I thought.

Get the recipe: Cameron Diaz’s Cuban Smash Burger

How to Make Cameron Diaz’s Cuban Smash Burger

Slice red onion and avocado, and place in a small bowl. Pour the pickling juice from a jar of pickle chips into the bowl, then place it in the fridge to quick pickle.

In another small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, yellow mustard, microbladed garlic, and sugar. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, mix together lime zest, lemon zest, orange zest, granulated garlic, granulated onion, cumin, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Add the ground beef and pork, and mix together until everything is evenly combined. Split the burger mixture into eight balls.

Heat up a griddle or cast iron skillet to medium heat. Smash the burger patty on the hot pan and cook on each side for two to three minutes. When you flip, add a slice of Black Forest ham, Swiss cheese, and pickle chips to the top of each burger. Transfer the cooked burgers to a sheet pan, then cover with another sheet pan or tented aluminum foil to let the cheese melt and the burger to set.

Spread the homemade aioli on brioche buns. Place the burgers on the buns, then top with the pickled onions and avocados. Serve with plantain chips and a glass of Avaline Rosé.

Although this recipe is quite involved for a smash burger, I have to admit, it’s worth the effort. The extra taste that you get from the zest and the seasonings, the golden aioli, and the added layers of ham and cheese really do make a difference in turning this burger into a gourmet experience. My family was ooh-ing and ahh-ing at how tasty this burger was, and we’ve already set a plan to make them again in the future. The patty was bursting with flavor and the creamy aioli paired well with the tangy pickles and onions. The taste was surprising and certainly not something I would expect from a smash burger.

After I finished my burger, I did walk away with two small edits, simply based on my own taste preferences. I don’t think the burger patties needed so much zest. Don’t get me wrong, I think the combination of the lime, lemon, and orange zest did add a unique flavor to these patties that I liked. But I think half the amount of zest would still give the burger that unique taste and not completely overpower the flavor.

Second, I would say to use half the amount of garlic as well. The garlic in the aioli was also incredibly overpowering, and while I am a big fan of garlic (I’m Italian, after all), I actually think it was a bit much for this patty. Use only one clove instead of two, and I think it would help balance out the flavor.

But all in all, this recipe was divine, and absolutely worth the extra effort.

The kitchen isn’t just a place for cooking and eating — it’s the central hub of the home and a great place to show off your personality. However, outdated hardware can easily tarnish the aesthetic, both metaphorically and literally. From worn-out cabinet handles to old-fashioned faucet designs, these seemingly minor details can make a big impact, turning a once-trendy kitchen into a very dated space.

To be sure your kitchen is up to date (and stays that way), I talked to top interior designers to learn about which kitchen hardware will stay on trend for years to come — and, just as importantly, which ones make your space look instantly dated.

    Outdated Kitchen Hardware

I hate to break it to you, but crystal knobs are out. According to Joyce Elizabeth Huston, cofounder and lead designer at Decorilla, “not only do they look dated, but they look out of style and cheap at the same time.” While these kinds of knobs were once loved for their glamorous appeal, they’ve fallen out of favor. Most have intricate designs that often clash with the sleek, minimalist style that characterizes contemporary kitchens.

    2. Highly Decorative Cabinet Handles

As the saying goes, less is more, and highly decorative cabinet handles can be too much for the space. Their elaborate patterns and ornate detailing don’t complement kitchens like they used to. “Handles that have intricate designs can look beautiful, but they will also make your kitchen feel and look less contemporary,” explains TileCloud interior designer Courtney Cole.

Plus, practicality plays a role in why they aren’t as popular; the complex designs can make them hard to clean, letting dust and grime accumulate in the crevices. As Huston says, “They definitely were used in the 1800s, but not anymore.”

“If you want your hardware to be modern, then ceramic knobs are out,” Huston says. Their colorful and unique patterns, while adding a touch of rustic or vintage charm, now seem out of place in modern kitchens, which more often highlight clean lines and minimalist design. “[Ceramic knobs] are pretty common in older homes, but because they were so popular decades ago, they’ll make your home feel a bit stuck in the past,” Cole adds. What’s more, ceramic knobs can be fragile and prone to chipping or cracking, making them less durable than other hardware.

    4. Overly Industrial-Themed Hardware

Overly industrial-themed hardware was once a top choice when it came to adding a rugged, edgy flare to kitchens, but it has started to feel dated in recent years. “While it became popular during the ‘farmhouse’ era, the pieces will instantly date your space,” says Will Zhang, director of design and product innovation at Emtek. “With the kitchen being a place we spend so much of our time, it’s better to avoid anything too trend-focused and instead opt for timeless pieces.”

These overly industrial hardware pieces often feature heavy, bulky designs with raw finishes like exposed screws, dark metals, and rough textures, which can make a space feel more like a factory than a home kitchen. While industrial elements can add character, when overdone, they can overwhelm the space and make it feel less warm and welcoming.

    Timeless Kitchen Hardware

Don’t worry, I also asked the experts what you should opt for instead of the dated features above. “If you want your kitchen to look more contemporary and modern, you should look for products that are more streamlined and polished in the way they look,” Cole says.

“When it comes to kitchen hardware, the simpler the knob or the pull the better,” Huston explains. “This Kela Matte Black Metal Cabinet is a great option because it has a sleek, simple, contemporary design. Black is my favorite because it’s sophisticated yet very versatile.” Additionally, one of the best things about simple knobs is that they’re minimalistic, making them timeless even if other parts of your kitchen change. “This Center to Center Bar Pull is another classic yet modern option that is great for the more traditional person but also has a very sleek aesthetic,” she adds.

    2. Brushed Nickel Hardware

Without a doubt, brushed nickel hardware has a classic appeal. “Hardware in a brushed nickel colorway will make your kitchen look timeless and elegant, but without the dated feeling that sometimes comes with timelessness,” Cole says. Plus, brushed nickel can seamlessly hide fingerprints and smudges.

“Another modern option is to go for chrome hardware,” Cole says. “The shine of chrome makes a kitchen look more clean, and because it reflects light, will make the space look more open and warm. This is one of my favorites in the kitchen, particularly if you want an über-modern aesthetic.” What’s more, the polished surface of chrome hardware creates a clean, contemporary look that complements a variety of kitchen styles, from minimalist to industrial.

The Final Verdict on Kitchen Hardware

“When making selections, it’s important to ask yourself if this is a decision you will still agree with in five-plus years,” Zhang says. “Additionally, I always recommend considering if the hardware works outside of the kitchen by taking into account the home’s theme and architecture. Finding continuity between your kitchen hardware and the home’s overall aesthetic typically leads to decisions that work better and last longer.” With all of these considerations in mind, now you’ll know exactly what to pick when you opt for kitchen hardware.
