BRACKENRIDGE, Pa. — Authorities in Pennsylvania are looking for a gunman they say shot and killed a police officer and wounded another during a foot pursuit near Pittsburgh on Sunday.
State Attorney General Josh Shapiro, the governor-elect, identified the slain officer in a tweet as Brackenridge Police Chief Justin McIntire.
“Today’s tragedy in Brackenridge is a devastating reminder of the bravery of those who put their lives on the line every day to protect us,” Shapiro said in the tweet. ”Police Chief Justin McIntire ran towards danger to keep Pennsylvanians safe — and he made the ultimate sacrifice in service to community.”
The shootings happened in separate incidents just blocks apart in Brackenridge, an Allegheny County town northeast of Pittsburgh. The gunman carjacked a vehicle after the shootings Sunday afternoon and is considered “extremely dangerous,” assistant police Superintendent Victor Joseph told a news briefing reported by WTAE-TV.
Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies were looking for a suspect identified as Aaron Lamont Swan, 28, of the nearby city of Duquesne. Police spokesman Christopher Kearns told reporters that Swan had been sought for a parole violation involving a weapons charge.
Brackenridge police didn’t immediately release the officers’ identities. The slain officer was shot in the head, said police spokesman Christopher Kearns. The second officer was wounded in the leg and was expected to survive, he said.

PITTSBURGH — Penguins coach Mike Sullivan thought his team wasn’t playing with emotion throughout the first half of Tuesday night’s game against the New York Rangers.
Then a red-hot power play came to the rescue.
Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust each scored with the man advantage as Pittsburgh beat the Rangers 3-2 to stop their seven-game winning streak.
“We weren’t playing that hard and for some odd reason, we weren’t in a game that we should’ve been,” Rust said. “I think getting those power-play goals really kind of gave us a shot in the arm.”
It was the first meeting between the division rivals since their first-round playoff series last season. New York rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to eliminate Pittsburgh, winning Game 7 at home in overtime.
Sidney Crosby scored his 18th goal and had an assist for the surging Penguins, who have won eight of nine. Pittsburgh is 15-3-2 in its last 20 games overall.
Malkin extended his point streak to nine games and tied Sergei Fedorov for the second-most points in NHL history among Russian-born players.
Tristan Jarry made 26 saves and ran his winning streak to seven. He also has a career-best 13-game point streak, tied for fourth-longest in team history.
Chris Kreider scored twice for the Rangers, who lost for the third time in 11 games. Igor Shesterkin stopped 21 shots but lost on the road in regulation for the first time this season.
“I thought we played a great game,” Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. “We worked hard and competed hard. It’s too bad for those power-play goals we gave up late in the second, but overall we played real good hockey.”
Kreider scored off the rush 22 seconds in when he sent a puck toward the net from the side wall that deflected past Jarry. Pittsburgh native Vincent Trocheck extended a five-game point streak with his first of two assists on the night.
New York took control for a while, but couldn’t finish. The Rangers were awarded three power plays and hit three posts in the next period and a half, while the Penguins couldn’t manage a shot for more than 10 minutes.
“It was a lackluster kind of performance for the first half of the game,” Sullivan said. “Somewhere in the middle of the second period, we started to get some life and we played with some juice. When we got the first power-play goal, it gave us a boost of energy.”
Malkin tied the game on the power play at 14:24 of the second. He beat Shesterkin with a blocker-side wrist shot from the top of the left circle, as the Penguins scored a power-play goal for the ninth straight game. Pittsburgh has 13 power-play goals in the last nine games.
Rust scored a second power-play goal in the final 15 seconds of the period. He tipped Pierre-Olivier Joseph’s shot behind Shesterkin to put Pittsburgh in front for good.
“In the absence of emotion, it’s hard to be at your best in this game,” Sullivan said. “Over the course of an 82-game schedule, sometimes you have those moments. But the first power-play goal got us going and we started to play from there.”

A bridge in Pittsburgh that collapsed in January, hours before President Joe Biden was scheduled to visit the city to tout his landmark infrastructure funding law, is expected to reopen by the end of December.
The Fern Hollow Bridge may reopen to traffic before Christmas if installation of railings, lighting and line painting can be completed this week, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said.
The 447-foot-long, four-lane bridge fell about 100 feet into a park below early on a snowy Friday morning due to a “structural failure,” according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
A bus and four passenger vehicles were on the bridge when it collapsed, according to the federal safety board’s latest report. At least four people sustained injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
State officials, including Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf, said that the federal bipartisan infrastructure law that passed last year is one of the reasons repair of the Fern Hollow Bridge is able to be completed in just 11 months after it collapsed.
The $1.2 trillion federal infrastructure package was signed into law in November 2021 after receiving bipartisan support in Congress.
“Thanks to new funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $25.3 million in federal funds were made available for the project and the project was able to proceed quickly without affecting funding for other critical projects in the region,” Alexis Campbell, press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, said in a statement sent to CNN on Thursday.
Following the collapse of the bridge, the governor and mayor issued a disaster emergency declaration to speed up the repair process. This allowed the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to manage the design and construction. Once the project is completed, the city of Pittsburgh will assume jurisdiction over and maintenance responsibility of the bridge.
Some work will continue after the bridge reopens and isexpected to last through the winter and spring.
It will take years to see the full impact of the infrastructure law, which provides funding for everything from bridges and roads to the nation’s public transit, broadband, water and energy systems.
The money isn’t released all at once. The law will provide roughly $550 billion of new federal investments over the next five years. Plus, major infrastructure projects – like building a new highway, adding a berth to a port or constructing a new airport terminal – take time.
But the fact that states and cities know the money is coming can allow them to move faster than usual, said Adie Tomer, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution who leads a team focused on infrastructure policies.
The Fern Hollow Bridge is just one example. The law has already supported repairs on more than 2,400 bridges, according to the USDepartment of Transportation.
“Without the new BIL funds, we would have been scrambling to find the money to quickly replace the Fern Hollow Bridge, and other important projects would have been impacted,” said Wolf in a statement released in October when Biden returned to Pittsburgh to see the bridge repair progress.
In Nebraska, a state transportation official told lawmakers on Tuesday that a long-delayed, 600-mile expressway system could be completed four years ahead of schedule.
The official credited the federal infrastructure law as one of the main reasons the department was able to accelerate work, according to a report from the Omaha World-Herald.
More than $185 billion from the infrastructure law has been announced and is headed to states, tribes, territories and local governments, with thousands of specific projects identified for funding thus far, according to the White House.
The funds are delivered in two ways: through formula programs that send money directly to states and through competitive grant programs that require state and local agencies to apply.
A lot of the formula programs have long been sending federal money to states on an annual basis, but are now delivering much more funding for the five-year period covered by the infrastructure law.
For example, the Federal Highway Administration released nearly $60 billion to states in October through 12 formula programs to support investment in roads, bridges and tunnels; carbon emission reduction; and safety improvements. That’s an increase of $15.4 billion compared with fiscal year 2021, the last fiscal year before the infrastructure law was implemented.
Dozens of major, specific projects have been selected for funding through grant programs over the past year. Funding for the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America grant program (known as INFRA), which is meant for freight and highway projects of national or regional significance, increased by more than 50% this year. About $1.5 billion was released for 26 transportation projects in September.
In August, the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity program, known as RAISE, released $2.2 billion for 166 specific road, bridge, transit, rail, port or intermodal transportation projects across the country. In 2021, the program could only afford to fund 90 projects.
The infrastructure law also created new funding programs, like the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program, which released $615 million to states this year. That money can be used for installing public electric vehicle charging stations.

In Deshaun Watson’s home debut for the Browns (6-8), his scoring toss to People-Jones came with two minutes and 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter to put Cleveland 13-3 up.
Watson, who was banned for 11 games for alleged sexual misconduct, finished 18 of 28 for 161 yards in wintery conditions, adding 22 more on the ground.
Browns rookie Cade York made two field goals but missed two others, while Baltimore’s All-Pro Justin Tucker – the league’s most accurate kicker – had a rare off night, missing with a 48-yarder to end the first half and then having another attempt blocked in the second.
Tyler Huntley, who was only cleared from concussion protocol a few days ago, started again in place of Lamar Jackson (knee), who missed a second straight. But Huntley but couldn’t get Baltimore going, finishing 17 of 30 for just 138 yards.
Huntley made a critical mistake in the third quarter, when he was intercepted at the Cleveland nine-yard line by Denzel Ward – the Ravens trailing only 6-3 at that precise moment.
Watson then directed a 91-yard scoring drive, delivering his TD strike to Peoples-Jones which proved to be enough to close out a crucial victory.

Two children and a young adult died in a home fire early Saturday morning in Pittsburgh, authorities say.
A woman was taken to the hospital and is reported in serious condition, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire said. Another woman and eight children were safely evacuated.
A firefighter was taken to the hospital and treated for an arm cut.
The three-alarm blaze occurred just after 2 a.m., officials said.
A vent at an underground natural gas storage well in Western Pennsylvania has been spewing massive amounts of planet-warming methane into the atmosphere for more than 11 days and attempts to plug the leak have thus far failed.
Owner Equitrans Midstream said the well at its Rager Mountain storage facility, located in a rural area about 1.5 hours east of Pittsburgh, is venting about 100 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, according to initial estimates.
If accurate, that would total 1.1 billion cubic feet in emissions so far, equal to the greenhouse gas emissions from burning 1,080 rail cars of coal.
Pennsylvania environmental regulators issued the company notice of five potential violations of state law. As a precaution, the Federal Aviation Administration has restricted aircraft from within a 1-mile radius of the leaking well.
A written statement provided Friday by Equitrans spokeswoman Natalie Cox said “there are no immediate public safety concerns” and the company has been working with a specialty well services company to plug the leak, which was first reported Nov. 6.
The Rager facility is in Jackson Township, at the heart of the Marcellus Shale formation that has seen a boom in gas production since the introduction of hydraulic fracturing more than a decade ago. Residents living as far as four miles away from the leak told The Associated Press on Friday they could hear the roar of pressurized gas escaping from the well and could smell the fumes.
Tracey Ryan, who homeschools her two young children at her house about three miles away, said the air reeks of sulfur and the noise is so bad she has had trouble sleeping.
“When you’re laying in bed at night, it sounds like a jet plane taking off,” said the 39-year-old mother. ”It’s unreal, the noise that’s coming, and it’s constant. … Everybody just keeps telling us we’re safe. But it doesn’t feel safe if you can hear it and smell it.”
Methane, the primary component of natural gas, is colorless and odorless. But when the gas is processed for transport and sale, producers add a chemical called mercaptan to give it a distinctive “rotten egg” smell that helps make people aware of leaks.
Methane’s earth-warming power is some 83 times stronger over 20 years than the carbon dioxide that comes from car tailpipes and power plant smokestacks. Oil and gas companies are the top industrial emitters of methane, which, once released into the atmosphere, will be disrupting the climate for decades, contributing to more heat waves, hurricanes, wildfires and floods.
The new leak comes as the Environmental Protection Agency on Nov. 11 updated proposed new rules intended to cut methane and other harmful emissions from oil and gas operations.
The Rager facility has 10 storage wells with a total storage capacity of 9 billion cubic feet of natural gas. Equitrans announced Thursday the leak had been stopped when workers flooded the leaking well, but the hiss of venting gas returned early Friday morning.
Cox cautioned the estimate of 100 million cubic feet of natural gas leaking per day is preliminary and the company would be unable to provide an accurate account of the gas lost until an inventory verification study is completed.
The initial estimate would potentially put the Rager leak as smaller but comparable to the daily emissions from the worst uncontrolled gas leaks in U.S. history — a 2018 blowout at an Ohio gas well owned by a subsidiary of ExxonMobil and the 2015 disaster at the Aliso Canyon storage facility in California.
The citations issued against the company by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection include failures to properly maintain and operate the gas facility, creating a public nuisance and producing a “hazard to public health a safety.” The company was also cited for failing to provide state inspectors “free and unrestricted access.”
Lauren Camarda, spokeswoman for the state environmental agency, said that when members of a state emergency response team first arrived at the site on Nov. 7 they were initially barred from entering and told “access was restricted to critical personnel only.”
Cox said that when the state team arrived, Equitrans’ contractors were still in the process of implementing a safety boundary to avoid introducing a potential ignition source that could ignite the highly flammable methane leaking into the air.
The gas is coming from a vent designed to relieve intense pressures building up in the well and prevent a blowout. Cox said the company is now withdrawing gas from four storage wells to reduce the overall pressure in the field. Efforts to plug the leak were expected to continue through the weekend, including attempts to plug the well with concrete.
Nearby residents said a resolution can’t come soon enough.
Edana Glessner, who runs a wedding venue 3.6 miles from the well site, said the smell was making her nauseous and impacted her business.
“You could hear it during the last wedding we had,” she said. “And it smelled, but everybody was OK with it. We said we’re really sorry.”

Their defense was lights out. Sauce Gardner continues to impress as a rookie, as well as D.J. Reed in the secondary. They’ve also got a good pass rush, making an incredible quarterback in Josh Allen look very uncomfortable. The run game was also there, even without star rookie Breece Hall – they rushed for over 170 yards.
I’m very impressed by what the Jets are doing this season. And it was a great way for this team to bounce back after a difficult loss to the New England Patriots. They are proving they’re no fluke.
I’ve been speaking to a lot of Jets players this season and they genuinely are not surprised by where they’re at. It’s what they expected; they believed they could be this team. They’re a confident bunch.
2) Tua tops 300 yards once more
Another week in the NFL, and another game where Tua Tagovailoa throws for over 300 yards and three touchdowns, this time against the Chicago Bears. It is becoming a regular thing now for the Miami Dolphins.

They’re so hard to stop because he is so quick with his decision-making – the ball comes out of his hand so fast – and the receivers are so fast too. He is throwing the ball in under two and a half seconds, and by that time Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are already 25 yards down the field.
As a result, defenses are terrified of being beaten deep, so they give Miami a lot of the middle of the field and their offense are feasting on that.

He has been missing for most of this season, but he arrived in a big way on Sunday with 211 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns. Yes, it was against a poor Carolina Panthers team, but I want to see if the Bengals can stick to this style going forward and more of a balanced attack?

The Los Angeles Rams continue to be hugely disappointing this season. They’ve been dreadful in the fourth quarter of games – outscored 71-10 in the final period. That’s on coaching, but also their big players not being able to close out games.
They played really soft on defense. They allowed Brady a deep pass down the middle and then he was able to work the sidelines before throwing the game-winning touchdown in the closing seconds. It was classic Brady, and a great moment in what will most probably be his last season.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been pretty awful – not terrible, but certainly bad by their standards – yet they’re in first place in the NFC South, with no one running away with that division. And weirdly, because of the respective strength of their divisions, as it stands the 4-5 Bucs aren’t in a dissimilar spot to the 6-2 Bills in terms of controlling their division and their destiny.

There have now been three games this season where the Raiders have led by 17 and have lost. That’s unforgivable, and it’s the sort of thing that will get head coach Josh McDaniels fired. And these NFL owners aren’t afraid to pull the trigger… we’ve seen it already this season with Matt Rhule in Carolina and most recently with Frank Reich at the Indianapolis Colts.
He’s now firmly on the hot seat, because that team simply can’t close out games. How can you run the ball for three-straight weeks with Josh Jacobs to the tune of about 200 yards per game, but then you get a 17-point lead in this game and yet you can’t run it to save your life?
Also, Davante Adams had nine catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns in the first half… and then just one grab for zero yards in the second. That is shocking!
Player of the Week: Joe Mixon
I left him out of my NFL Fantasy Football team, which absolutely destroyed me. But it has to be Mixon after his five-TD day for the Bengals.

Not only did it keep Chicago in the contest, but it was one play of many that he made in a really entertaining game that offered hope for the future of the Bears and their fans.
Fields is an incredible talent who is going to grow as a passer. But for now, let him do his thing, let him run free. He has made the Bears one for the more entertaining teams in the NFL in recent weeks.
And I loved the clip of Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel shouting at Fields as he ran out of bounds at one point on the Miami sideline… he was basically saying, ‘please, stop it!’

Coach of the Week: Kevin O’Connell
I’m a bit conflicted about this choice, because Kevin O’Connell is an offensive-minded coach, but his Minnesota Vikings unit does tend to get bogged down at times in games.

They’ll score fast in games, then will follow it up with about six punts in a row, before then finding another way to score again.
Yet, this team are 7-1, are on a six-game winning streak and every one of those wins has been by one score. You look back to last year, and this Vikings team lost a lot of heartbreakers; this season, they’re finding a way to get over the line, and I think that is down to a coach who gives his players such confidence.
You can see their team spirit come through in the way they celebrate as a team – on the field, in the locker room and even on the plane! They had an old curmudgeon as a coach before in Mike Zimmer, who wouldn’t have allowed those sort of things.
Whatever magic formula they’ve found, it’s working, because they’ve practically assured themselves a playoff spot already at only the halfway point of the season.

Jeff Saturday as the new interim coach of the Colts really is a head-scratcher.

I really like Reich, but I think it was inevitable that he was going to get fired as the Colts’ season was heading south. They made a change at quarterback, fired the offensive coordinator… that was really the only logical next move.
It was textbook from owner Jim Irsay really, all the way up until the hiring of Saturday. I believe he now becomes the first head coach in the league to have never coached at NFL or college level – he has only coached high school football before.
He was an All-Pro player for the team though, and was a really good leader. During the NFL lockout of 2011, he was a key negotiator in completing the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the NFL and NFL Players’ Association. There’s obviously something about him.
But it’s one to keep an eye on, because it’s a hugely unconventional move by the Colts. I’m curious but also dubious.

The Green Bay Packers were a team widely though to be in the market for some new additions to their flagging football team ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline, but the 4pm ET cut-off passed without a deal being done.
Packers (3-5) fans watched on as their division rivals strengthened, the NFC North-leading Minnesota Vikings (6-1) bringing in tight end T.J. Hockenson from the Detroit Lions, and the Chicago Bears (3-5) adding star receiver Chase Claypool from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
It is on offense too that the Packers are most in need of help, the team themselves linked with Claypool, as well as Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans, in the hopes of solving the league’s 26th ranked scoring offense (18.1 points per game) and 22nd in passing (217.4 passing yards per game).
Wide receiver is a position the Packers are badly lacking depth at following on from the trade of their No 1 wideout Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders in the offseason. A four-game losing streak leading into Tuesday’s trade deadline strengthen the belief that Green Bay would be forced to make a move with their playoff hopes fading.

“If you’re a Packers fan, you’ve got to really be frustrated right now,” Sky Sports’ Jeff Reinebold said on the latest Inside The Huddle podcast. “Certainly Aaron Rodgers.
“I hope somebody took away the remote control of his television and put it in a drawer.
“The Minnesota Vikings, who are hot, go out and get Hockenson, because Irv Smith is on injured reserve for six to eight weeks. They give up a second-round draft choice to get a really good tight end out of Detroit.
“You just wonder with the Packers, how serious are you about winning?”

Commenting further on the Claypool deal, Reinebold believes it benefits both parties, with the Bears securing their second-year quarterback Justin Fields a much-needed weapon on offense and the Steelers getting a player off their books who had become “kind of a distraction”.
The 24-year-old Claypool has topped 850 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons in the NFL, while his rookie year in 2020 saw him also tally 10 receiving touchdowns.
“Claypool; here’s a guy that in his rookie season goes off, he looks as if he’s going to be the future as wide receiver number one in Pittsburgh,” Reinebold said.
“For the Bears, it’s a great trade because they’re desperate for talent on offense. And it’s a fresh start and for the Steelers, they get rid of a guy that had become really kind of a distraction with some immature behaviour.
“I don’t think he’s a bad kid, he just needs to grow up a little bit. Hopefully he’ll help Justin Fields and the Bears.”
‘Dolphins show they’re committed to winning’
As well as the Claypool and Hockenson deals, on a hugely busy trade deadline day, the Denver Broncos traded pass rusher Bradley Chubb to the Miami Dolphins (5-3), with running back Chase Edmonds heading the other way as part of the deal. The Dolphins also added San Francisco 49ers RB Jeff Wilson Jr to their backfield.
Another pair of running backs also swapped homes, with the Indianapolis Colts moving Nyheim Hines to Bills and Zack Moss sent the other way in the deal, while the Jacksonville Jaguars traded for suspended Atlanta Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley.

With the last two Super Bowl winners, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2020) and Los Angeles Rams (2021), achieving success in large part due to loading up on superstar talents such as Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford via free agency or trade, Reinebold believes teams are trying to be similarly aggressive.
“It goes back to, sadly, a guy we’ve lost; Ted Thompson, who was the general manager for a lot of years in Green Bay, was a ‘draft and develop’ guy. But I’m not sure if that philosophy works in this day and age,” Reinebold said.
“We talk about the Les Snead [Rams general manager] effect in the NFL, creating a team of superstars and continuously depending on trades, free agency and that mode, as opposed to the draft – bringing in to your football team what are proven players.
“And we say it all the time; it’s a copycat league. What’s hot is what’s hot. At the moment, that approach seems to be the way to do it in the NFL.

Latavius Murray ran in a one-yard go-ahead touchdown with 1.43 to play after Travis Etienne had put the Jags up 17-14 with a one-yard score amid his 156-yard performance.
K’Waun Williams then crowned the win by intercepting Trevor Lawrence at the 35-yard line on the first play of the Jaguars’ ensuing drive.
Denver improved to 3-5 on the season with the much-needed victory having arrived in the UK facing scrutiny over a sputtering offense behind Russell Wilson and with trade speculation lingering over wide receiver Jerry Jeudy and star edge rusher Bradley Chubb.
Doug Pederson’s Jags meanwhile fell to 2-6 after their fifth straight defeat having led 10-7 at half-time thanks to Evan Engram’s opening touchdown and Riley Patterson’s field goal followed by Jeudy’s score.

Denver took the lead for the first time in the contest through Melvin Gordon’s one-yard touchdown run with five minutes to play in the third quarter after Wilson had connected with tight end Greg Dulcich for 38 yards amid a nine-play 98-yard drive starting at their two.
The teams then exchanged four straight three-and-outs by way of the Broncos’ second-ranked defense – also tied-first in EPA/play – and a sack from Jags No 1 overall pick Travon Walker followed by a sloppy false start penalty from Denver.
DJ Jones sacked Lawrence for a loss of seven on third-and-nine to derail the Jags’ eight-play drive with 8.51 remaining, celebrating by pretending to sip a cup of tea in an ode to his British hosts.
Penned in at his own end zone on third-and-10 with seven to play, Wilson threatened a field-flipping sucker-punch when he spotted KJ Hamler and Dulcich two-on-one downfield, only for his pass to land between the Broncos duo much to the relief of Jags defenders.
The Jags subsequently took the lead with Etienne’s one-yard touchdown run at the end of a six-play march boosted by Christian Kirk’s 25-yard reception and the second-year running back’s own run of 11.
But Wilson responded with a 47-yard toss to KJ Hamler, who followed up with a nine-yard burst before Murray burrowed through the bodies to complete the defining drive.

Wilson, having almost been intercepted on the opening throw of the game, was picked off on Denver’s next drive when Tyson Campbell jumped Courtland Sutton’s route to wrestle the ball away at the sideline.
The Jags capitalised emphatically as Lawrence floated a 22-yard strike to Engram on a corner route at the back of the end zone to cap the ensuing possession.
Jacksonville squandered an opportunity to extend their advantage as Lawrence was intercepted by Justin Simmons at the goalline having benefited from four Broncos penalties in a 13-play drive that ended pointless.
Riley Patterson’s 37-yard field goal handed the Jags a 10-0 lead after Etienne’s 49-yard burst before Jeudy scooted in on a six-yard jet-sweep touchdown to put Denver on the board with three minutes to play in the half.

Six people were injured in a shooting outside of a Pittsburgh church where a funeral was being held for a 20-year-old man who had recently been shot and killed, Pittsburgh Police Commander Richard Ford said. Two people, including one teenager, have been charged with attempted murder in connection with Friday’s shooting, authorities announced Saturday.
All six of the victims were in stable condition after the attack that Ford called a “targeted shooting.”
Ford initially reported that six people were shot. However, the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department later clarified that only five people suffered gunshot wounds, and the sixth person was wounded while trying to escape the scene.
Just after 12 p.m. Friday, police received a ShotSpotter tip that five shots were fired in the area of the Destiny of Faith Church, Ford said. Another alert came in shortly after about an additional 15 shots fired.
Police responded to the church, where a funeral was ongoing for John Hornezes, who was one of the three killed in a shooting in the city on Oct. 15, according to CBS Pittsburgh. The Friday shooting happened outside of the church, Ford said.
The latest on the shooting on Brighton Road from Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Acting Police Chief Thomas Stangrecki and Commander of Major Crimes Richard Ford:
Four victims self-transported to the hospital, according to Ford. One person was transported from the scene in critical condition. A sixth victim had left the scene and was then transported to the hospital. One victim was taken to Pittsburgh’s Children’s Hospital while the others went to Allegheny General Hospital, Ford said. Their ages were not released.
The victim who was in critical condition was upgraded to stable condition, police said later Friday afternoon.
Police do not yet have a motive for the shooting, but Ford said “there’s reason to believe there was obviously specific people targeted.”
Ford added that there were “multiple” suspects and that police had “good video” of the incident.
Late Friday night, Pittsburgh Public Safety reported that two people of interest had been detained. On Saturday, the department announced that 19-year-old Shawn Davis and a 16-year-old boy had been arrested in connection with the shooting on charges of criminal attempted homicide, criminal conspiracy, aggravated assault and firearms charges.
“This is probably, in my pastoral ministry that I have been doing over 30 years, this has been one of the most devastating days of my life, I would say,” Rev. Brenda Gregg, the pastor at the Destiny of Faith Church, said during a Friday afternoon press conference.
PITTSBURGH — Luca Stanzani threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Owen Glascoe then completed the 2-point conversion with a toss to Michael Love and Long Island beat Duquesne 50-48 in double overtime Saturday.
Duquesne’s Ayden Garnes blocked Michael Coney’s 24-yard field goal attempt with 1:25 left in regulation, and with 24 seconds to go, Coney missed a 52-yard attempt to force the extra sessions.
Stanzani was 22 of 27 for 346 yards passing with four touchdowns and an interception. The Sharks (1-7, 1-3 Northeast Conference) erupted with four touchdowns in the third quarter for a 35-21 advantage. It marked the Sharks first-ever, four-touchdown quarter since joining the FCS ranks in 2019.
The Sharks entered the contest with a 10-game losing streak that started Nov. 6, 2021 with a 34-26 home defeat against the Dukes. Since moving to the FCS level, Long Island has posted a record of 5-27.
Joe Mischler threw for 414 yards and five touchdowns but had three interceptions for the Dukes (2-6, 1-3).

Police responded to the church, where a funeral was ongoing for John Hornezes, who was one of the three killed in a shooting in the city on Oct. 15, according to CBS Pittsburgh. The Friday shooting happened outside of the church, Ford said.
The latest on the shooting on Brighton Road from Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Acting Police Chief Thomas Stangrecki and Commander of Major Crimes Richard Ford:
Four victims self-transported to the hospital, according to Ford. One person was transported from the scene in critical condition. A sixth victim had left the scene and was then transported to the hospital. One victim was taken to Pittsburgh’s Children’s Hospital while the others went to Allegheny General Hospital, Ford said. Their ages were not released.
The victim who was in critical condition was upgraded to stable condition, police said later Friday afternoon.
Police do not yet have a motive for the shooting, but Ford said “there’s reason to believe there was obviously specific people targeted.”
Ford added that there were “multiple” suspects and that police had “good video” of the incident. Late Friday night, the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department reported that two people of interest had been detained in connection with the shooting. Their names were not released.
“This is probably, in my pastoral ministry that I have been doing over 30 years, this has been one of the most devastating days of my life, I would say,” Rev. Brenda Gregg, the pastor at the Destiny of Faith Church, said during a Friday afternoon press conference.
Mike Doyle, a Republican, is running to represent the Pittsburgh area in Congress.

Oddly, a first-time Republican congressional candidate shares his name with a long-serving Democratic congressman, and the potential for confusion at the ballot box has Summer Lee’s campaign on the offensive.
Lee, a progressive Democrat, is running against the Republican Doyle for control of Pennsylvania’s 12th, which was redrawn along with districts across the country after the 2020 Census. The problem is that many people in the new 12th district were part of the old 18th district, which was repped by the Democratic Doyle.

Lee’s campaign released a short video Wednesday to try to set the record straight.
“I’m running against an extreme anti-choice, pro-NRA Republican who wants to cut Social Security & Medicare,” she tweeted. “Your vote in #PA12 is a vote for a far-right GOP majority or against it.”
“We always knew it was going to be an issue,” Lee’s campaign manager, Abby Gardner, told HuffPost.
Campaign staffers saw “an uptick in confusion” among residents in the area after mail-in-ballots went out to voters in early October, she said.

West Pennsylvania resident Anita Gordon, 79, told HuffPost she filled in the oval for the Republican Mike Doyle on her mail-in ballot by accident. She only realized her error when checking Nextdoor, the neighborhood social media app.
“I liked the Democratic Mike Doyle. I mean, he had been in Congress for quite some time,” Gordon said. “I had no idea. To think that there would be a Republican with that name ― that was unbelievable.”
Asked whether she thought the Republican candidate’s campaign had been clear about his political position in its messaging, Gordon replied, “I can’t say yes.”
Gardner told HuffPost that she believes the Doyle campaign is not going out of its way to make a clear distinction between the Democratic veteran and the Republican newbie. She said that some voters told her they just weren’t thinking when they saw Doyle listed as a Republican, because Pennsylvania allows candidates to cross-file to multiple parties in certain other elections, including school board and judicial seats.
“I think the entire purpose of his campaign is to confuse people. I think they’re not interested in clarifying, because his website does not identify that he’s a Republican. His literature doesn’t identify that he’s a Republican. His yard signs say, ‘Democrats for Doyle.’”
The Doyle campaign did not return HuffPost’s request for comment.
Back in May, Doyle told an opinion columnist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that “it felt too much like a gimmick to run against the current congressman ― also named Mike Doyle ― in a head-to-head race.” He said he decided to throw his hat in the race after the incumbent announced his retirement and the borders of the district shifted to be less favorable to a Democratic candidate.
“My name is on the ballot,” he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette two weeks ago. “But it’s not me. There is a gentleman with the same name as me who is running in the new 12th District, which is part of the old 18th District. That’s about the only thing we share in common is the same name.”
The Jewish community in Pittsburgh came together to honor the memory of those who were murdered four years ago at the Tree of Life Synagogue. The ceremony comes as antisemitism is on the rise nationwide and as fallout from Kanye West’s antisemitic comments continues. Elise Preston has the details.

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is expected to return to action on Monday night
Mac Jones looks poised to return to action when the New England Patriots take on the Chicago Bears in Monday Night Football.
The second-year quarterback has been nursing a high ankle sprain suffered in the Week Three defeat to the Baltimore Ravens, paving the way for rookie play-caller Bailey Zappe to step in.
Zappe has since led the Patriots to back-to-back wins as a starter having recorded a completion percentage of 81 in a shutout victory over the Detroit Lions before throwing for 309 yards and two scores against the Cleveland Browns.
“I think it [his ankle] feels pretty good,” Jones said on Friday. “Just trying to work through all the stuff to be able to play in an NFL football game. I want to be able to go out there and help the team, and once I’m there, I’m there. I’m definitely making a lot of progress, and we’ve done a good job with the treatment.
“Gonna try to do my best to put the hours in to get ready. Definitely moving better, so I feel pretty good.”

Jones has endured a difficult start to the season after completing 64 of 97 passes for 786 yards and two touchdowns to five interceptions prior to his injury against the Ravens.

“Tyquan [Thornton] didn’t have a big variety of routes at Baylor. But he’s a smart kid. He has a good skill set. He’s picking those things up like everybody, every rookie,” said Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
“The passing game in the NFL is quite different from college. A lot of refinement. But he gets better every day. We’ll see how it goes. Like you said, it’s only been a couple of weeks out there in the regular season.

Tom Brady has apologised for comparing playing an NFL season to being in the military, saying it “was a very poor choice of words.”
Brady opened his weekly press conference on Thursday by apologising for the comment he made in his ‘Let’s Go!’ podcast.
“Earlier this week, I made a statement about playing football and the military and it was a very poor choice of words,” Brady said. “I just want to express that to any sentiments out there that people may have taken it a certain way. So I apologise.”

On the podcast, Brady had told his co-host Jim Gray and Brooklyn Nets basketball star Kevin Durant, “I almost look at a football season like you’re going away on deployment in the military – it’s like, ‘Man, here I go again.’
“There’s only one way to do it. And I think, Jim, we’ve talked from time to time just about how do you enjoy the certain moments of it? The reality is you can really only be authentic to yourself, right?
“Whenever you may say, ‘I want to make sure I spend a little more time doing this’, when it comes down to it, your competitiveness takes over and as much as you want to have this playful balance with the work balance, you’re going to end up doing exactly what you’ve always done, which is why you are who you are.”
Some members of the military community took to social media following Brady’s comments to express their disappointment.
Brady has shown support for the military in the past, including a 2018 trip to visit U.S. Army and Air Force troops at Al Udeid Air Base in Doha, Qatar.
Brady and the Buccaneers are currently 3-3 through the first six weeks of the 2022 NFL season. The 45-year-old, record seven-time Super Bowl winner had initially retired in the offseason before changing his mind and returning for another year.
Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles has defended his management of Brady this week, saying the legendary quarterback does not receive special treatment.

Brady missed the team’s walk-through practice on Saturday, prior to their 20-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, as he was allowed to attend New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s wedding in New York on Friday.
Brady has also been granted Wednesdays off this season as a ‘rest day’ and he took an 11-day break during the team’s preseason training camp for personal reasons.
“He works as hard as anybody,” Bowles said. “Special treatment? There have been a few guys that have missed meetings and some practices for some special thing. It just doesn’t get publicised because they’re not him.
“It just kind of comes with the territory. You don’t worry about it too much.”
Then asked if Brady is as “locked in” as he has been in the past, Bowles answered, “yes.”
