Philadelphia is ready for a big 2026 and it plans to start the new year off with a bang — literally.

Three firework shows, including one capping a free concert by LL Cool J on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, are scheduled for Wednesday night. New Year’s Day brings the 125th annual Mummers Parade.

To accommodate the New Year’s revelers, SEPTA plans to operate additional late-night service on its subway and Regional Rail lines. But there’s no need to wait until midnight to celebrate. For people who prefer to be asleep when 2026 begins, there are plenty of afternoon and evening parties taking place.

Here is a guide to the biggest celebrations this week, including the best viewing spots.

    New Year’s Eve Concert

The Parkway and nearby roads will be closed before and during the event. Concertgoers must pass through metal detectors. Sanitation trucks will block roads near the Parkway, and police will use drones, helicopters and a marine unit to ensure safety.

The 125th annual Mummers Parade will kick off New Year’s Day 2026 at City Hall starting at 9 a.m.

The Mummers Parade, recently named the best holiday parade in the country, takes place Thursday on South Broad Street.

From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Mummers’ four divisions — fancies, comics, wenches and string bands — will march 1 1/2 miles from City Hall to Broad Street and Washington Avenue. Spectators can catch performances at three intersections along Broad Street — Sansom, Pine and Carpenter streets.

The string bands will perform at a special viewing area at 17th and Market streets before making their way to City Hall. They will begin setting up at 11 a.m. on Market Street between 17th and 21st streets, and on John F. Kennedy Boulevard between 17th and 20th streets.

Reserved bleacher seating is set up at City Hall, where the judges are stationed, but tickets are sold out. The 28th annual Fancy Brigade Finale — a pair of performances at the Pennsylvania Convention Center — also is sold out.

Various road closures and parking restrictions will begin taking effect on New Year’s Eve and continue until the parade concludes.

The parade is being broadcast on WDPN-TV (MeTV2) and simulcast on WFMZ-TV Channel 69.

  • Dry January isn’t just a month away from alcohol. It leads to long-term reductions in drinking

    [ad_1]

Abstaining from alcohol for short periods of time — like Dry January — leads to reduced drinking in the long run and various physical and psychological improvements, new research shows.

Researchers at Brown University analyzed 16 studies that evaluated Dry January, the month-long sobriety challenge, and found that participants reported improved sleep, better moods, weight loss, improved concentration and more energy. They continued to drink less alcohol afterward and showed an improved ability to refuse drinks.

MORENot happy with how you look in photos? There’s a psychological explanation

Avoiding alcohol for a month also reduces liver fat, improves insulin levels and lowers cancer-related growth factors, Suzanne Colby, one of the study’s authors and a professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences, told the Boston Globe.

Even cutting back on alcohol led to similar benefits, Colby said.

“They still had some reduction in drinking that was sustained and part of that was they still gained confidence for reducing or refusing drinks in social situations, which I think is a big part of the effect: Learning how to navigate socializing without drinking, which can be really challenging to do because they are really intertwined.”

Dry January began in the United Kingdom in 2013. Each year, millions of people participate by vowing to not drink alcohol, or reduce their consumption habits, during January. Participants tend to be younger, female, have higher incomes and a college degree, the Brown University researchers found. Participants also tend to be heavy drinkers.

The analysis, published in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism in September, analyzed data from more than 150,000 Dry January participants, mostly from the U.K.

The Dry January participants that found the greatest success in abstaining from alcohol formally registered on the Dry January campaign website, used guides like the Try Dry app or received daily coaching emails, the study found. The campaign’s success at targeting heavy drinkers — a group difficult to reach through intervention programs — led the researchers to recommend expanding outreach on the benefits of the Dry January and investing in tools that keep participants on track.

“The effort leads to sustained moderation: most participants continue to drink less alcohol rather than increasing consumption afterwards,” Megan Strowger, who led the study as a postdoctoral fellow and now works at the University of Buffalo, said in a press release“Overall, participating in Dry January allows people to pause, reflect and rethink their relationship with alcohol, including how it affects their social life, mental health and physical health.”

Americans have shown a growing wariness to drink alcohol as its health implications have become more publicized. A Gallup poll released in August found that 54% of adults say they drink alcohol. That’s the lowest reported percentage since 1939.

In January, the U.S. surgeon general published an advisory report that linked alcohol use to seven types of cancer. A study published in March suggested alcohol consumption at any level increases the risk of dementia.

For people interested in eliminating alcohol consumption, experts recommend tracking one’s progress, participating in a social environment that supports the goal of staying sober or trying “Damp January,” which consists of cutting back on drinking rather than giving it up entirely.

“There is so much more support for living an alcohol-free lifestyle now,” Colby said in the press release. “It is more socially acceptable than ever to be ‘sober curious’ or alcohol free. Social norms have shifted, in part with the help of influencers on social media sharing the benefits of sobriety and reducing the stigma of not drinking.”

  • Looking back at 2025: Michelin Guide graded Philly’s food scene and weighed in on cheesesteak spots

    [ad_1]

    December 29, 2025

Three city restaurants received one of the most coveted culinary awards, and a handful of others were recognized by reviewers.

Philly’s one-star restaurants can expect more business and recognition from the “Michelin bump,” which could also make it more difficult for customers to book reservations. An analysis from Chef’s Pencil found that for every star a restaurant receives, menu costs increase by an average of $100 per person.

Amanda Shulman, owner of Her Place Supper Club, said this month that her staff has already seen a jump in email inquiries since the November ceremony. Owner and chef of Provenance, Nicholas Bazik, said their waitlist is typically around 50 people long on any given night.

Restaurants can gain or lose stars over time, so the pressure is on for chefs and their staff to maintain their award-winning levels of service, but the owners are welcoming the pressure.

“We keep doing the work every day and that’s all we really want to do,” said Chad Williams, who owns Friday Saturday Sunday with his wife, Hanna. “We’re just happy to get the recognition and it kind of puts a little more fire under us.”

  • Joel Embiid out for Sixers-Thunder on Sunday with two injury designations

    [ad_1]

Joel Embiid (right knee injury management; right ankle sprain) will miss the Sixers’ road game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday afternoon, according to the team’s initial injury report for the game unveiled on Saturday, which also lists Paul George (left knee injury management) as probable:

Embiid, whose right knee issue led to him missing eight consecutive games earlier in the season, has experienced multiple scares there over the last two games, including Friday’s game in Chicago in which he surpassed 32 minutes for the first time in 2025-26. This is the first mention of any right ankle issue for Embiid this season.

Also out for the Sixers are Kelly Oubre Jr., whose absence due to a left knee LCL sprain has officially reached the six-week mark, with no substantive information available about his potential timeline to return; and Trendon Watford, who has now been out for more than a month with an adductor strain and similarly has no timetable to be back on the floor.

Both players are limited to individual on-court work; Oubre seems a bit closer to ramping up than Watford though it is unclear if either one is anywhere near close to that point
