  • Virtua Health, ChristianaCare decide not to merge operations

    [ad_1]

Virtua Health and ChristianaCare have abandoned a planned $6 billion merger, the health systems announced Thursday.

The health systems – two of the largest in the area – signed a letter of intent in July to explore the possibility of joining forces. The plan would have merged 600 health care sites in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland into one system and would have affected about 30,000 employees. Merging would have generated an estimated $6 billion in annual revenue.

MORE: Drinking tea instead of coffee may be better for your bones

But the health systems “have mutually agreed to terminate the Letter of Intent,” they said in a statement. “After thoughtful evaluation, both organizations have determined that they can best fulfill their missions to serve their communities by continuing to operate independently.”

The health systems did not detail why they decided against merging, but their statement said they are “committed to providing high quality, compassionate care and advancing the health and well-being of the patients and communities they serve.”

Virtua Health, based in Marlton, has five hospitals in South Jersey. The health system operates two satellite emergency departments, 42 ambulatory surgery centers and 400 other sites. It has a cancer care affiliation with Penn Medicine and a pediatric partnership with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In 2019, Virtua took over Lourdes Health System, including its hospitals in Willingboro and Camden.

ChristianaCare is the largest health system in Delaware with four hospitals, a Level I trauma center and a freestanding emergency department.

  • Eagles-Commanders Week 16 injury report, with analysis

    [ad_1]

The Philadelphia Eagles have a few new additions to their injury report, and they’ll have a short week to get ready for their Saturday Week 16 matchup with the Washington Commanders. The Commanders will be without starting quarterback Jayden Daniels, who the team has decided to shut down for the rest of the season.

Here’s the Eagles-Commanders injury report, with analysis.

    051020EaglesLogo2020
Player  Injury  Tues*  Wed  Thurs Status
    RT Lane Johnson Foot DNP
    iDL Jalen Carter  Shoulders  DNP
    RB Saquon Barkley  Stinger  DNP
    LG Landon Dickerson  Calf  DNP
    OT Fred Johnson  Ankle  DNP
    FB Cameron Latu  Stinger  DNP
    RB Tank Bigsby  Illness  Limited
    EDE Jaelan Phillips  Knee  Full
    LB Zack Baun  Hand  Full
    OT Cameron Williams  Shoulder  Full

    Tuesday notes (Walkthrough, estimation only):

    • Lane Johnson is still not yet practicing, but he is expected to make his return to the field Saturday against the Commanders. We’ll see.

    • Jalen Carter still isn’t practicing yet either, though the Eagles defense has been stellar without him the last two weeks.

    • Landon Dickerson played through his calf injury Week 15, and did not look right.

    • Saquon Barkley’s stinger was unknown until now. The Eagles are just two days removed from their win over the Raiders, so we’ll get a better sense if his injury is serious if he continues to be a DNP on Wednesday. He seemed fine in the locker room after the Raiders game, for whatever that is worth. Same with Fred Johnson.

    • Jalen Hurts seemed to hurt his lower leg on an awkward tackle against the Raiders, but he does not appear on the injury report.

Notable players on IR, PUP, suspension, etc.

S Andrew Mukuba (IR, eligible to come off of IR after Week 16): Mukuba has had an up and down rookie season, but was beginning to earn the trust of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. On the season, Mukuba has 46 tackles and 2 INTs. He will be eligible to come off of IR next week, though Marcus Epps has played well in his absence.

WR Johnny Wilson (IR, knee/ankle, out for the season): Wilson is a massive receiver at 6’6, 228 who carved out a dirty work role as a physical blocker his rookie season in 2024, though sometimes he was a little too aggressive, as he committed four penalties (3 holding, 1 OPI). He wasn’t much of a threat as a receiver, catching only 5 passes for 38 yards and a TD. He played a little over 400 snaps, and actually started four games.

EDGE Ogbo Okoronkwo (IR, triceps, eligible to come off of IR at any time, season could be over): Okoronkwo was signed to provide edge depth. He played in just one game (4 snaps) before tearing his triceps.

EDGE Azeez Ojulari (IR, triceps, eligible to come off of IR at any time): Ojulari was the presumed third EDGE defender in the pecking order when he signed with the Eagles as a free agent, but he is now no better than the EDGE7.

FB Ben VanSumeren (IR, knee, out for the season): VanSumeren was poised to take on a bigger role in the Eagles’ offense in 2025 as a full-time fullback, but he tore his patellar tendon on the opening kickoff of the season. His season is over.

iOL Willie Lampkin (IR, season over): Lampkin is an extreme oddity, in that he is a 5’11 offensive lineman who only weighs 290 pounds. He looks like a player you’d create in Madden just for fun. However, coming out of North Carolina he received glowing reviews for his play on the field, and he played well in the preseason after signing with the Rams as an undrafted rookie free agent. The Rams waived Lampkin with an injury designation. The Eagles then claimed him and placed him on their IR.

The Eagles activated Lampkin’s 21-day practice window, which expired. He won’t play this season.

OT Myles Hinton (IR, Eagles opened up 21-day practice window on 11/19): Hinton is a sixth-round rookie who was up and down in training camp. The Eagles placed him on IR with a back injury, and he has not been on the active roster all season.

The Eagles activated Hinton’s 21-day practice window, which expired. He won’t play this season.

OT Cameron Williams (IR, eligible to come off of IR at any time): Williams struggled in training camp, and landed on IR. This is effectively a redshirt season for him. Williams did have his 21-day practice window activated last Thursday, but he remains unlikely to play this season.

Player  Injury  Tues  Wed  Thurs  Status
    LT Laremy Tunsil  Oblique  DNP
    LB Bobby Wagner  Knee/Rest  DNP
    DT Eddie Goldman  Concussion  DNP
    TE Colson Yankoff  Ankle  DNP
    QB Jayden Daniels Elbow Limited
    CB Jonathan Jones  Rib  Full
RB Chris Rodriguez Jr.  Groin  Full
    OT George Fant  Knee  Full
    DE Drake Jackson  Groin/Knee  Full

    Tuesday notes

    • Jayden Daniels has been shut down for the season, in case you missed that. Marcus Mariota will start at quarterback.

    • Starting LT Laremy Tunsil left the Commanders’ Week 15 win over the Giants, but returned to the field later in the game. He did not practice on Tuesday. With the Commanders holding Daniels out for the rest of the season, it’s not out of the question that they might also make sure Tunsil doesn’t make his injury worse by playing hurt. His status will be worth monitoring throughout the week.

Notable players on IR, PUP, suspension, etc.

TE Zach Ertz: Ertz had 66 catches for 654 yards and 7 TDs in his first season with the Commanders in 2024. In 2025, he had 50 catches for 504 yards and 4 TDs before he tore his ACL against the Vikings Week 13. He remains second on the team in receiving yards. His season (maybe his career?) is over.

CB Marshon Lattimore: Lattimore looked cooked when he was healthy this season, committing 9 penalties in 9 games. He tore an ACL in November and his season is over. With Lattimore and Trey Amos (below) both on IR, the Commanders’ starters at CB will likely be Mike Sainristil, Noah Igbinoghene, and Antonio Hamilton. So, the Eagles should have some matchup advantages there.

CB Trey Amos: Amos is a second-round rookie who started 8 games this season. 32 tackles, 6 PBUs, 0 INTs. He was up and down this season. Too many missed tackles. He suffered a fractured fibula in November and his season is over.

DE Dorance Armstrong: Armstrong’s season was off to a strong start, as he had 5.5 sacks in 7 games before suffering an undisclosed season-ending knee injury.

DE Deatrich Wise: Wise was set to be part of the Commanders’ D-line rotation this season, but he suffered a season-ending quadriceps injury Week 2.

RB Austin Ekeler: In 2024, Ekeler had 733 yards from scrimmage as the Commanders’ third down back. He tore his Achilles Week 3, ending his season.

WR/RS Luke McCaffrey: McCaffrey had 11 catches for 203 yards and 3 TDs as a receiver, and he was the team’s primary kick returner before suffering a likely season-ending collarbone fracture Week 9 against the Seahawks.

DE Javontae Jean-Baptiste: Jean-Baptiste is a rotational defensive lineman who had a nice start to the season, with 6 tackles and a sack in the Commanders’ first three games. He suffered a torn pectoral muscle way back in Week 3. Usually that’s an injury that players can recover from in-season if they occur early enough, but the Commanders will likely just shut him down for the season.

  • Man accused of causing deadly Uber crash in Philly turned himself in

    [ad_1]

The man who police say caused a crash that killed an Uber passenger and injured the driver during a hit-and-run while fleeing from officials in Philadelphia turned himself into authorities after more than a day on the run.

    Léelo en español aquí

NBC10 crews captured the moments that Joseph Cini, 35, was surrounded by family as he walked into Philadelphia police headquarters in Philadelphia on Dec. 16.

This all began on Monday, Dec. 15, 2025, at 7:14 a.m. on the 900 block of North Watts Street when members of the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve a warrant against Cini for an alleged domestic assault.

Cini then fled the scene in a Nissan Maxima, traveling eastbound on Girard Avenue from Watts Street, police said.

As he drove away, Cini crashed into an Uber, a red Jeep Patriot, according to investigators. Cini then fled the scene on foot northbound on 8th Street.

A 63-year-old woman, identified by police as Angela Cooper, who was a passenger inside the Uber was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:24 a.m. The Uber driver, Pastor Stephen Thompson, was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was placed in stable condition.

According to his wife, Jenelle Thompson, he has several broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

“He’s doing well. He’s resting right now. He’s still in a lot of pain. But he’s alive,” Jenelle said.

On Tuesday night, the members of the House of Triumph Outreach and Worship Center, where Stephen is the pastor, handed out food to those in need in Kensington.

“Ultimately this is God’s work. And I would get in trouble because he’s my husband first but he’s also my pastor. So, I would get in trouble by my pastor because he’s like, ‘You still have able people to help you do the work. Just because I’m down, doesn’t mean God’s work is down,’” Jenelle said.

It’s a mission they do every Tuesday night, but this time without Pastor Stephen.

Police have not yet revealed if Cini is facing any charges.

  • Philly DA’s office shares new details on Nicetown slaying of 93-year-old man

    [ad_1]

The man charged in the Dec. 3, 2025 slaying of 93-year-old Lafayette Dailey, inside his Nicetown home, knew him “in a neighborly way,” officials with the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office said in Monday.

Officials said, following an investigation into the slaying, investigators found no signs of forced entry into the home on the day Dailey was killed.

Coy Thomas, 53, has been arrested and charged in the crime.

On Monday, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner opened an event to discuss the arrest and charging of Thomas, by saying Dailey was well-known in his community and was a family man, friend, neighbor and military veteran.

“Lafayette Dailey, who’s picture is right here, shouldn’t have been in the crosshairs,” said Krasner. “That never should have happened. But, it did and there is no tolerance in this office for the victimization of vulnerable people.”

In detailing the evidence that their office has, allegedly, found in this case, Assistant District Attorney Ashley Toczylowski said police became aware of the crime after Dailey’s friends at a senior center in Philly’s Ogontz neighborhood expressed concern after he wasn’t coming in a regularly as usual.

Friends and family members went to the home, she said, where they found Dailey’s body after he had been stabbed to death.

An investigation, she said, revealed that, at some point on Dec. 3, 2025, Thomas was spotted on surveillance footage entering the home.

But, she said, investigators found no signs of forced entry, because Thomas and Dailey knew each other “in an neighborly way.”

Surveillance video, Toczylowski said, also showed Thomas leaving the home alone, hoping into Dailey’s vehicle and driving away.

“A vehicle, we know, that only he drove,” she said, noting no one else had access to the car.

After the slaying, she said, Thomas sold the vehicle.

Along with taking the car, Toczylowski said that Thomas also stole Dailey’s wallet. He then, she said, attempted to use his credit cards at several businesses in the area.

Inside the property, she said, investigators found the home “ransacked a bit.”

“We also know there was some kind of struggle,” she said.

Thomas has been charged with homicide, robbery, theft and related offenses following this incident.

He is currently being held without bail, according to court documents.

  • Philadelphia schools to open late Monday due to snow and bitter cold

    [ad_1]

Philadelphia schools will open late on Monday, Dec. 15, as the region cleans up after the weekend snowstorm and deals with bitter cold temperatures.

All School District of Philadelphia schools – including Early Childhood Centers and the Dr. Constance E. Clayton Education Center – as well as archdiocesan high schools and Catholic elementary schools in Philly will operate on a two-hour delay on Monday.

“Students who arrive late due to weather-related challenges will not be marked late, or will be excused if absent, upon receipt of a note from a parent or guardian,” a school district spokesperson wrote. “Staff who arrive late will be marked with an excused lateness. All outdoor activities scheduled for tomorrow will be moved indoors.”

You can view the full list of school delays and closures across the region here.

Several inches of snow fell across the Philadelphia region late Saturday into Sunday morning. While the snow is gone, bitter cold temperatures are gripping the region. Temperatures will be in the teens late Sunday night and feel below zero across the area. The cold continues on Monday with highs around 30 and temperatures that feel like the upper teens throughout the day.

  • Joel Embiid questionable, Tyrese Maxey doubtful for Sixers-Hawks on Sunday

    [ad_1]

Joel Embiid (left knee injury management) is questionable to play when the Sixers face the Hawks in Atlanta on Sunday night, according to the team’s initial injury report for the game unveiled on Saturday afternoon, which also lists Tyrese Maxey as doubtful due to the illness responsible for him missing the team’s win over the Indiana Pacers on Friday:

Embiid, who has yet to appear in two games during any three-day span during the season, said he felt “great” after posting his strongest performance of the season to lead the Sixers to victory on Friday night, intimating he was eager to play again on Sunday. However, Embiid acknowledged that to this point the team’s plan to manage his left knee has included multiple days off in between all games. With four-day layoffs before and after this potential first try at playing two games in three nights, perhaps the Sixers feel the time is right to give it a shot.

Maxey was not in attendance as Embiid, Paul George and VJ Edgecombe led the Sixers to their 14th victory of the season; he went from probable to questionable to out due to an illness. It was Maxey’s first absence of the season. It is unclear whether or not he traveled with the team to Atlanta on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Sixers remain past due on substantive updates about the statuses of Kelly Oubre Jr. (knee), who has been sidelined for a month, and Trendon Watford (adductor), whose absence has lasted multiple weeks. The latest information on both is that, according to Sixers head coach Nick Nurse on Thursday, neither player is doing live on-court work, only individual activity.

  • Eagles-Raiders Week 15 injury report, with analysis

    [ad_1]

The Philadelphia Eagles lost their third straight game on Monday night to the Chargers, but at least they escaped L.A. without any new significant injuries. Their Week 15 opponent, the Las Vegas Raiders, are expected to be without starting quarterback Geno Smith.

Here’s the Eagles-Raiders injury report, with analysis.

    051020EaglesLogo2020
Player  Injury  Wed*  Thurs Fri  Status
RT Lane Johnson  Foot  DNP DNP DNP Out

    Wednesday notes (Walkthrough, estimation only):

    • There is some optimism that Lane will play in this game, but his DNP is not a great start to the week.

    • Carter was considered “week-to-week” after the procedure on his shoulders. He could miss another game. We’ll see.

    • Dickerson left Monday night’s game with his calf injury, but returned to the field later.

    Thursday notes

    • Dickerson went from limited on Wednesday to a non-participant on Thursday, though it certainly makes sense to get him some rest.

    • Fred Johnson was added to the report today, which is not ideal with Lane Johnson already hurt. Johnson’s addition to the injury report perhaps explains why the Eagles opened the 21-day practice window for Cameron Williams on Thursday.

    Friday notes

    • Lane Johnson and Jalen Carter are both out, as expected.

    • Fred Johnson is good to go.

    Wednesday notes

    • Several reports have emerged that Geno Smith will not play in this game. Smith injured his right shoulder in the third quarter of the Raiders’ loss to the Broncos on Sunday. He also suffered a cut on his right hand.

Former Eagle Kenny Pickett filled in and played well, completing 8 of 11 passes for 97 yards and a TD against a good Broncos defense.

Smith has had a horrendous season. He leads the NFL with 14 INTs, and his total EPA of -70.73 is ranked 70th in the NFL, only ahead of Titans rookie Cam Ward. The Eagles might very well rather face Smith.

    • Last week, Crosby was on the Raiders’ injury report with a knee injury. He was limited on Wednesday, and he did not practice on Thursday or Friday. He played all 74 snaps against the Broncos, and had 4 tackles and a sack. He has 9 sacks and 2 forced fumbles on the season, and is pretty clearly the Raiders’ best player. My bet is that he’ll play on Sunday, but we’ll keep an eye out for reporting on him throughout the week.

    • Miller is the starting LT. He is on IR, but he returned to practice on Wednesday for the first time since Week 4. He was a first-round pick in 2018, and is Vegas’ best offensive lineman, by far. He suffered a high ankle sprain and a hairline fracture Week 4 against the Bears. Stone Forsythe filled in, and has started the last nine games for the Raiders.

    • Chinn is second on the team with 104 tackles. Like Crosby, he also played all 74 snaps against the Broncos.

    Thursday notes:

    • With the exception of Geno Smith, all of the Raiders players who did not participate in practice on Wednesday were limited on Thursday. That’s a positive development for them.

    • Kolton Miller was still limited. The guess here is that he won’t play, especially since the Raiders have nothing to play for.

    Friday notes

    • Smith is officially out. Pickett will start.

    • Miller is officially out as well.

Notable players on IR, PUP, suspension, etc.

LT Kolton Miller (IR, 21-day practice window opened on Wednesday): As noted above.

RG Jackson Powers-Johnson (IR, eligible to come off of IR at any time): Powers-Johnson was the Raiders’ starting RG to begin the season. He was the Raiders’ second-round pick in 2024. He suffered an ankle injury against the Broncos Week 10, and his season is likely over. The Raiders’ current starter at RG is Caleb Rogers, a third-round rookie.

CB Kyu Blu-Kelly (will soon be on IR, season over): Blu-Kelly is a starting corner. He had 40 tackles and 3 INTs before suffering a ruptured patellar tendon against the Broncos Week 14. His season is over. The Raiders’ other regular starting corner is Eric Stokes. Third-round rookie Darien Porter filled in for Blu-Kelly after he went down.

  • Philadelphia police spread holiday cheer to families with ‘Shop with a Cop’ event

    [ad_1]

Philadelphia police are spreading holiday cheer and ensuring hundreds of deserving families have what they need this season.

On Thursday, the Philadelphia Police Department hosted its 5th annual Shop with a Cop event at the Walmart in South Philadelphia on Columbus Boulevard.

Officials noted that this year’s event was the largest Shop with a Cop event to date, with nearly 600 families participating.

Families, who police identified as most in need, participated in a day filled with shopping, festivities, and community spirit.

Festivities included a children’s petting zoo, mummers performers, face painting, games, and so much more.

Officials said that during the event, each child also received a $150 Walmart gift card, lunch and the opportunity to take home seasonal clothing and school supplies.

“When you have the opportunity to give kids gifts during this Christmas, especially during these challenging times, when a lot of families can’t afford it. What a special day,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel told NBC10. “It takes you back to those days as a child, coming down and having toys under the tree. I think about the children out here today who won’t experience that. If you could bring that experience to them. I’m just so proud of the support we received, and more importantly, the police officers who volunteered their time.”

This event was made possible with the support of the police department’s long-time partners, the Philadelphia Police Foundation and Walmart.

Philadelphia has always been crazy about its sports culture, but recent shopping suggests fans there are a different breed of loyal altogether.

A recent study found that Philly sports fans spend more on supporting their favorite teams than the average American consumer does on holiday shopping and Christmas gifts.

This highlights just how deeply entrenched the city’s love of sports actually goes.

Whether it’s merchandise, traveling to games, sports betting, or just buying tickets to watch the games, the figures indicate that when it comes to being passionate about sports, Philly fans aren’t afraid to let their wallets do the talking.

Spending Levels That Outpace Holiday Budgets

The study took a look at how much people tend to spend on Christmas gifts across the nation. It found that, on average, consumers spent around $870 per person. While not a meager sum by any stretch, Philadelphia sports fans generally exceed that figure through team-related spending, regardless of which sport they enjoy most. On average, Philly fans were willing to fork over approximately $944 each year to follow and support their favorite teams. That figure was generally split between gear, tailgates, trips to catch live games, and other related entertainment like online sports betting.

Sports betting alone has become a major driver of sports-related entertainment for local fans. With Pennsylvania boasting one of only seven fully regulated iGaming markets (online casinos included), local fans have plenty of digital platforms to turn to. The market has also branched out considerably over the years, and many fans now regularly use niche options like the best Bitcoin betting sites.

The appeal of these sites comes from their use of cryptocurrencies as a payment method. While Bitcoin is the most popular and widely used option, other tokens like Ethereum and Solana also feature regularly on these specialized sites. By exploiting the benefits of blockchain technology, crypto betting sites offer more private experiences, instant payouts, and a wide range of sports and markets to bet on.

For those who can’t regularly make it to games, online sites like these and other modern options like streaming services and social media help fans engage with their favorite teams in a variety of ways. This has translated into a democratization of sorts that now helps sports fans feel closer to their favorite teams and players. The fact that they can interact with and even directly reply to posts on social media pages has resulted in a surge of new avenues for fans to spend on sports, and Philly fans have embraced all of them.

How Team Culture Drives Spending Habits

The gap in Philly fans’ spending habits for sports teams vs. holiday shopping shows how much weight sports carry for locals. Many fans attend several games a year across the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers, and Flyers. Special events like playoff runs, rivalry games, or stadium visits boost yearly totals. These costs climb once food, jerseys, travel, and parking enter the mix.

Some fans start spending early in the year. Others build their budgets around key dates like opening day or major matchups. High-demand games often draw higher prices. Families who attend games together may spend hundreds in a single outing. The survey placed Philadelphia among the highest spending markets in the United States, trailing only a few cities with strong football and baseball cultures.

A City Known for High Emotion and High Loyalty

Philadelphia fans often describe themselves as part of an extended sports community. This mindset surrounds each team with a shared sense of identity. When teams succeed, the city lights up. When teams struggle, people stay committed. Despite holiday shopping already surging this year, this emotional link helps explain why local fans spend more than the national holiday shopping average.

Season ticket holders make up a portion of this spending. Some fans keep their seats for decades. They treat renewals as part of yearly planning, much like household bills. Season ticket packages run far above casual single-game purchases, which pushes the average higher.

Travel adds more weight. Fans often take trips to see away games in nearby states. Washington, New Jersey, and New York each host teams that face Philadelphia clubs regularly. These trips often include hotel stays, meal,s and transportation. Some groups turn these events into long weekends, which adds to the total yearly outlay.

The Broader Picture Behind the Numbers

The study that produced these figures compared spending habits across major US cities. Philadelphia ranked near the top not only for total dollars spent but also for consistency across all four major sports. Many cities show strong spending in one sport. Philadelphia maintains strong spending across the board.

Even during the off-season, the spending does not fade. Many fans keep buying shirts, hats, and jerseys during roster moves or draft announcements. Preseason excitement sparks new purchases. Sports radio stations and local news outlets keep stories active, which keeps fans thinking about their teams year-round.

Philadelphia’s position near the top of the spending chart shows how deep the bond between fans and teams runs.

The yearly totals reflect long traditions passed across generations and the high-energy sports culture that shapes daily life in the region.
