  • Horiátiki recipe straight from Greek Islands at Hellas in Tarpon Springs

    [ad_1]

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. — Hella’s longtime Executive Chef, Emmanuel “Manny” Psomas, wrote the recipe for this traditional Greek Salad on a paper tablecloth in the middle of the bustling restaurant Hellas.

Hella’s Restaurant and Bakery is a mainstay in historic Tarpon Springs on Dodecanese Boulevard along the working sponge docks.

It’s late December, and lines stretch out the door of the bakery — employees take orders in clipboards as people wait.

Psomas wrote the recipe down after we lit cheese on fire and tasted the salad that’s on all the tables at Greek restaurants in Greece.

Psomas and his family are from the Greek Islands.

He began working at Bellas in the early 1990s and travels to Greece every year.

This way, he grows his culinary legacy in keeping with the traditions of Greece.

    Horiátiki

    Greek Salad

  • Gene Deckerhoff, voice of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is retiring

    [ad_1]

TAMPA — The voice of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is hanging up his microphone.

Play-by-play announcer Gene Deckerhoff and the team announced Wednesday that he will retire at the end of the season.

“Calling Buccaneers games has been one of the greatest honors of my professional career,” said Deckerhoff. “I’ve had the fortune to form meaningful relationships with players, coaches and staff members as well as interact with thousands of Buccaneers fans everywhere in the world.

“My wife, Ann, and I are grateful to the Glazer family for allowing us to be a part of the Buccaneers organization for so many wonderful years,” he said. “I am equally thankful to all the members of the radio crew and the partners I have had with me through the years — particularly Dave Moore, who has been by my side for the past 19 years. I will miss doing what I love, but now is the right time to step away.”

Deckerhoff has spent 37 years calling Bucs games on the radio, with more than 800 games and 1,100 touchdowns.

His “Touchdown, Tampa Bay!” line was used in two Super Bowl victories for the Bucs.

Only two other announcers have spent more than 37 seasons with the same team.

“For 37 seasons, Gene Deckerhoff’s voice has set the scene for the most iconic moments in our franchise’s history, and his signature calls will forever resonate with Buccaneers fans,” said Buccaneers Owner/Co-Chairman Bryan Glazer.

“His passion, authenticity, and unmistakable voice created memories that have been cherished and enjoyed by countless generations of Buccaneers fans. As he closes out his extraordinary journey, we congratulate Gene on a remarkable broadcasting career and wish him a well-deserved and fulfilling retirement.”

Deckerhoff retired from doing FSU sporting events in 2022.

He turned 80 years old this year.

  • Iowa holds off Vanderbilt for 34-27 win in ReliaQuest Bowl

    [ad_1]

    By  COREY LONG

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Mark Gronowski threw two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead Iowa to a 34-27 win over No. 13 Vanderbilt in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Wednesday.

Gronowski was 16 of 22 passing for 212 yards, throwing touchdowns passes of 10 and 21 yards to Reece Vander Zee and DJ Vonnahme, respectively, as Iowa got out to a 21-3 lead early in the third quarter.

Vanderbilt (10-3) rallied behind Diego Pavia. The Heisman Trophy runner-up threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Tre Richardson and a 16-yarder to Joseph McVay to pull the Commodores within 24-17.

The teams traded scores early in the fourth quarter, with Gronowski making it 31-17 with a 1-yard keeper and Pavia answering with an 11-yard TD run.

Iowa (9-4) pushed the lead back to double digits with a 44-yard field goal from Drew Stevens to cap off a 13-play, 49-yard drive that took more than seven minutes. Vanderbilt answered with a 37-yard field goal from Brock Taylor to make it 34-27, but Iowa was able to close out the game with Xavier Williams running for 11 yards on a third-and-1 with 1:55 remaining and the Commodores out of timeouts.

Pavia finished with 347 passing yards. Richardson caught six passes for 127 yards and Junior Sherrill had eight catches for 123 yards for Vanderbilt.

Vonnahme led the Hawkeyes with seven catches for 146 yards and Kamari Moulton rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown. Gronowski had 54 rushing yards.

    The takeaway

Iowa: The Hawkeyes are 4-3 in the ReliaQuest Bowl (formerly known as the Outback Bowl) in seven trips under coach Kirk Ferentz. It’s the 11th time Iowa has won nine or more games in a season under Ferentz.

Vanderbilt: Despite the loss, the Commodores set a school record with 10 wins and signed coach Clark Lea to a six-year contract extension in November.

  • Texas gets 41-27 Citrus Bowl win over Michigan in Orlando

    [ad_1]

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Arch Manning made big plays with his arm and his legs Wednesday in the Citrus Bowl, throwing two touchdown passes and putting it away with a 60-yard scoring run in a 41-27 victory that ended a rough month for No. 14 Michigan.

Manning was an easy choice as the Citrus Bowl MVP, and that was before he burst up the middle on his 60-yarder that gave the Longhorns (10-3) a 38-27 lead, the first time all game either team led by more than one score.

Manning was 21 of 34 for 221 yards passing, and he ran nine times for 155 yards.

He delivered a perfect throw to Kaliq Lockett on a 30-yard TD for a 31-27 lead, the first time Texas led since a field goal on its opening drive.

That was one play after he scrambled 15 yards for a first down on fourth-and-2. Manning twice converted on fourth down with clutch runs, both times extending drives that led to touchdowns.

Kyle Whittingham, who arrived in Orlando on Saturday to start meeting with players, watched from the box at the Citrus Bowl. The longtime Utah coach takes over a Michigan team (9-4) that produced a strong running game and played tough on defense despite missing its top two defenders who opted out of the game.

But there was no answer for Manning, who accounted for about 80% of the Longhorns’ offense.

Bryce Underwood, Michigan’s freshman quarter, kept the Wolverines in the game until a pair of late interceptions sealed it. He was 23 of 42 for 199 yards and two touchdowns, along with three interceptions in the last 18 minutes of the game.

Underwood, who ran for 77 yards, scampered for a 5-yard touchdown run by diving to touch the pylon, giving Michigan its last lead at 27-24 with just under 11 minutes to go.

Hisd pass was intercepted by Ty’Anthony Smith over the middle after Texas had taken the lead, and Smith picked him another along the sideline on the next drive.

Biff Poggi lost for the first time as Michigan’s interim coach. Poggi coached victories over Nebraska and Central Michigan when former coach Sherrone Moore served a two-game suspension related to the sign-stealing scandal from 2023.

Moore was fired three weeks ago for having an extramarital affair with a staffer, and he was arrested and charged with three crimes later in the day for breaking into the woman’s home.

Whittingham brings a history of toughness and discipline from his 21 years at Utah, which Michigan hopes can go a long way toward bringing some stability to a culture in chaos.

    The Takeaway

Michigan: Bryson Kuzdzal gave Michigan strength in the running with 82 hard-earned yards on 20 carries. He converted first downs on fourth-and short on three occasions.

Texas: While Manning ran the show for the Longhorns, they got great production from freshman running back Christian Clark, who had one touchdown and rushed for 105 yards on 20 carries. Texas was without its leading three rushers, all of whom are entering the transfer portal.

    Too much yellow

The field only looked like it was sprinkled with Cheez-It crackers from the bowl sponsor. Michigan and Texas combined for 21 penalties. The most devastating for Michigan was a blind side block on a second-and-2 from the Texas 10. Underwood threw an interception two players later.

    Up next

Michigan: New coach Kyle Whittingham fills out his staff. The Wolverines open at home Sept. 5 against Western Michigan.

Texas: Opens at home Sept. 5 against Texas State.

    [ad_1]

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The Space Coast saw a record number of launches of 109 for 2025. That shattered the previous tally of 93 last year.

As for the future, 45th Space Launch Delta Commander Brian Chatman said the current record could be broken soon.

    What You Need To Know

    • That shattered the previous tally of 93 last year
    • With more companies taking to the skies, there are plans for more launch pads to be activated in the new year
    • The number of launches could eventually reach 300 a year by 2035

“I think we’re going to break a hundred again next year; it’s going to be great, somewhere between 100 and 120 right now for calendar year 2026,” Chatman said.

In addition to players like SpaceX with more Falcon 9 launches, and the company’s Starship planned for a 2026 Space Coast launch, NASA’s Artemis II mission is cued up for a potential February mission.

Blue Origin is also prepping for its second New Glenn heavy-lift rocket launch.

  • Florida black bear hunt ends Sunday

    [ad_1]

FLORIDA — Today marks the final day of a statewide black bear hunt. It’s the first one in Florida since 2015.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) only issued about 170 bear hunting permits.

The commission says it set this limit to restrict the bear population from growing.

Even if hunters had 100% success this year, FWC said it believes the population would be stable and not decline in the future.

Hunters are not required to bring harvested bears to manual check stations, they only need to call FWC and report their results.

  • Bucs, Panthers both lose as NFC South remains unclaimed

    [ad_1]

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns, including a 63-yard toss for his first career score, and the Miami Dolphins beat the slumping Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20-17 on Sunday.

The Bucs (7-9) remained one game behind the Carolina Panthers (8-8) in the NFC South after the Panthers’ 27-10 loss to Seattle on Sunday. The Buccaneers would still clinch their fifth consecutive division title and sixth straight playoff berth if they beat Carolina in next week’s regular-season finale to force a two-way tie.

If Tampa Bay, Carolina and Atlanta all tie at 8-9, the Panthers would win the division.

But Tampa Bay has lost four straight games, seven of its last eight and has barely looked like a playoff team during that stretch. The Buccaneers’ last four losses have all been by one possession.

Despite three turnovers and being outgained 145-53 on the ground Sunday, Tampa Bay pulled within three after a three-play, 91-yard drive that Baker Mayfield capped with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Mike Evans with 54 seconds left.

A busted coverage by the Dolphins defense led to a 59-yard reception by Chris Godwin that set up the score, but Miami recovered the ensuring onside kick to end Tampa Bay’s comeback attempt.

Mayfield completed 33 of 44 passes for 346 yards with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Godwin on the game’s opening drive. The former No. 1 pick has thrown an interception in each game of the Buccaneers’ losing streak, including two on Sunday. The first was an underthrow to receiver Jalen McMillan that was picked off by rookie cornerback Jason Marshall Jr.

The second came as the Buccaneers were driving down the field midway through the fourth, trailing by 10. Mayfield, one play after somehow escaping a sack attempt by Quinton Bell and completing an 11-yard pass to Evans, threw a red-zone interception to safety Ashtyn Davis.

After the Buccaneers forced a Dolphins punt, linebacker Bradley Chubb stripped Mayfield on a sack, which Bell recovered.

Ewers completed 14 of 22 passes in his second career start for the Dolphins (7-9), who have already been eliminated from the playoffs. Rookie receiver Theo Wease Jr. took Ewers’ first TD pass 63 yards into the end zone, and tight end Greg Dulcich caught an 11-yard scoring pass.

Running back De’Von Achane had 18 carries for 83 yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry against Tampa Bay’s seventh-ranked run defense.

The Buccaneers took an early lead on a 16-play touchdown drive on their first possession of the game but gave up 17 straight points before Chase McLaughlin’s 33-yard field goal cut the deficit to seven points in the fourth.

McLaughlin had connected on 11 straight field goals from 55-plus yards entering Sunday but had a 55-yard attempt blocked late in the second.

Ewers led the Dolphins back down the field to set up Riley Patterson’s 33-yard kick that pushed the score to 20-10.

    Injuries

Buccaneers: G Michael Jordon (concussion) and LB Haason Reddick (concussion) left with concussions and did not return. … CB Jamel Dean (shoulder) left early in the fourth.

Dolphins: LB Chop Robinson (concussion), LB Jordyn Brooks (hamstring) and LB KJ Britt (groin) left with injuries. … WR Jaylen Waddle was playing through a rib injury.

    Up next

    Buccaneers: Host Carolina next weekend.

  • Retailers tap into AI to cut down on return fraud

    [ad_1]

ST PETERSBURG, Fla. — Return fraud is becoming a bigger problem for online retailers, and now companies are being forced to look at how they can crack down on the expensive issue.

According to the National Retail Federation, retailers are expected to hit nearly $850 billion in returns after this holiday season wraps up. According to David Sobie, the head of UPS-owned logistics company Happy Returns, nearly 1 in 10 items returned is fraudulent in some way.

Sobie says 83% of companies he and his team polled this year, consider retail fraud a very serious issue. Retail fraud can range from returning an empty box in hopes of a refund, to more complex schemes like returning a similar looking item of lesser value and hoping the employee processing the return doesn’t notice.

Now, retailers are starting to use AI as a way to crack down on this problem. Sobie is doing the same with a handful of his retail partners using his new Return Vision solution that utilizes AI.

Return Vision works by scoring a return based on different characteristics, and if it’s deemed a higher risk, an employee will open the return and process the item using AI. The technology catches things the employee could miss.

He used the example of returning a less-expensive cotton sweater in place of an expensive one.

“AI catches subtle differences,” he said. “It could be a different neckline, different stitching, or where the buttons are placed. Some things that someone doing their job and doing their job well may not catch.”

Getting caught processing a fake return could get a customer banned from using that online retailer or even result in legal action.

  • Clippers aim for season-best 3-game win streak at Blazers’ expense

    [ad_1]

Kawhi Leonard’s hot streak is inserting much-needed life into the Los Angeles Clippers.

Leonard looks for another superb outing and the Clippers seek a season-best third straight victory when they visit the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night.

Leonard scored 32 points in Saturday’s 103-88 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers and followed up with a season-best 41 in Tuesday’s 128-108 triumph over the Houston Rockets.

It marked just the second time the eight-win Clippers have won back-to-back games all season. Despite Los Angeles sitting in 13th place in the Western Conference, Leonard is confident the Clippers can make a run up the standings.

‘We all know how many games we lost early,’ Leonard said after Tuesday’s victory. ‘I don’t know how many games are left, probably 50-plus so, it’s a long season. So, anytime we put on this jersey, you got to compete and try to win a basketball game, and that’s what I’m taking pride in. I think everybody else is, too — win, lose or draw.

‘We don’t have a give-up mentality even though the record looks like that,’ he added. ‘But like I said, we got to compete.’

Leonard was 16-of-23 shooting against the Rockets and missed just one 3-point attempt while making four for the second straight game. He has scored 20 or more points in each of his last 11 appearances.

James Harden scored 29 points against Houston and has topped 20 in four of his last five appearances.

Harden also hopes the Clippers are ready to kick it into a higher gear with five consecutive home games following the visit to Portland.

‘I don’t know what it feels like to be in this position with this record,’ said Harden, 36, in his 17th NBA season. ‘So, I always feel like we’re better than obviously the record shows. We got an opportunity, these home games coming up, to take advantage of it and rack up some wins.’

The Trail Blazers dug themselves out of big holes in each of their past two games but were on the losing side both times.

Portland trailed by 21 in the third quarter against the Detroit Pistons before losing 110-102. The Trail Blazers rallied to take a 100-99 lead with 4:13 remaining before Detroit finished on an 11-2 burst.

One night later against Orlando, Portland trailed by 17 early in the third quarter and had a chance to tie the contest, but Shaedon Sharpe split two free throws with 38 seconds to leave the Trail Blazers down one before the Magic closed it out.

‘We’re just going to continue to fight, we’re not going to back off,’ Portland standout Deni Avdija said of the setbacks. ‘We believe in each other. … Those losses are tough, but you really learn from them. I’d rather lose close games like that then get blown out.’

Trail Blazers interim coach Tiago Splitter said the mood of the team remains strong despite difficult losses.

‘This effort is going to pay off sooner or later,’ Splitter said. ‘The most important thing is you have to compete and be in those moments to try and win basketball games.’

Avdija scored 25 points against Orlando and he has scored 24 or more points in nine of the past 12 games.

The Clippers have won 19 of the past 21 meetings with Portland, including a 114-107 home victory on Oct. 26. Leonard had 30 points and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles while Avdija scored 23 for the Trail Blazers.

  • Hornets carry modest momentum into clash with Magic

    [ad_1]

Hot-shooting rookie Kon Knueppel and the Charlotte Hornets look to continue a surge when they visit the Orlando Magic on Friday night.

Charlotte has won three of its last five games and Knueppel, the No. 4 overall pick out of Duke, leads all rookies in scoring with 19.4 points per game and is shooting 41.9% from 3-point range.

‘We’re just going to take one game at a time, compete and try to get a win every night,’ Knueppel said following Tuesday night’s 126-109 win over the Washington Wizards. ‘And going forward, I think if we play our brand of basketball and play the way we want to play, we’re going to have a good chance to do that.’

Knueppel was one of eight Hornets in double figures with 19 points against the Wizards, sinking 5 of 9 shots from behind the arc.

LaMelo Ball has been in and out of the Hornets’ lineup, appearing in 20 of 30 games this season dealing with ankle injuries. He is averaging 19.6 points and 8.7 assists, which would rank fifth in the NBA if he had played enough games to qualify.

Ball had a team-high 23 points with nine assists against Washington. Brandon Miller added 20 points, and Moussa Diabate delivered 12 points and 18 rebounds.

Second-year Charlotte coach Charles Lee believes the team is turning the corner due to its increased defensive intensity.

‘I feel like our defense continues to get better,’ he said on Tuesday. ‘The games that we win, our defensive rating is usually in a really good spot. And then offensively, I feel like ever since the game at Brooklyn (a 116-103 loss on Dec. 1), we’ve done such a better job of trusting the pass, playing the pass.’

Defense has been the Magic’s calling card for the last few years under coach Jamahl Mosley. That and injuries, unfortunately.

The Magic’s leading scorer, Franz Wagner, is currently dealing with a left ankle sprain and has missed the last two weeks, and Moritz Wagner is still out after tearing his ACL last season.

‘Whoever is out there on the floor, you’re asked to play Magic basketball, and that is playing hard, playing together, playing defense, playing for one another,’ Mosley said Tuesday. ‘This group will continue to show that as we get bodies back, whenever that may be.’

Orlando has won two of its last three games, most recently a 110-106 win in Portland on Tuesday. Desmond Bane scored 23 points, and Anthony Black added 22.

Orlando continues to rank among the worst 3-point shooting teams in the NBA at 34.3%, 27th in the league. Bane, brought over in a monster offseason trade with the Memphis Grizzlies, is shooting a career-worst 36.6% from downtown, but is coming off making a season-high four 3-pointers on seven attempts against the Trail Blazers.

Orlando defeated the Hornets 123-107 on Oct. 30 in Charlotte. The Magic have swept the last five meetings and won 10 of the last 11.

  • How some of Santa’s little reindeer relate to the weather

    [ad_1]

We all know that Santa travels the world on Christmas Eve on a sleigh pulled by eight… no, nine, reindeer! But are you aware of the weather tie-ins with Santa and his reindeer?

    What You Need To Know

    • Two reindeer are named after weather phenomena
    • Rudolph saved the day one Christmas Eve when fog covered most of the Earth
    • Santa uses forecasts from local meteorologists to plan his Christmas Eve flight

    (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu)

We’ve all heard the tale of Rudolph, and we’ll cover that part of the story in a moment, but first, let’s start with two of Santa’s original reindeer.

    The original eight

You know Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid, and Donner and Blitzen, but did you know that two of the reindeer are named after weather phenomena?

    But which ones?

If you guessed Donner and Blitzen, you are correct!

Donner, also sometimes called Donder or Dunder, is named after thunder. The name comes from the Dutch word for thunder.

Blitzen, also spelled Blixen and Blixem, is named after lightning. The name also comes from a Dutch word meaning lightning.

Santa’s reindeer were never officially named until the 1823 release of the poem, “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” also known as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” by Clement C. Moore.

    (AP Photo/Malin Moberg)

    Here’s an interesting reindeer fact.

In the story “The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus” by L. Frank Baum, the author listed ten reindeer. Flossie and Glossie are Santa’s lead reindeer, while Racer and Pacer, Fearless and Peerless, Ready and Steady, and Feckless and Speckless are the rest of the team.

None of these names are weather-related terms.

No offense to L. Frank Baum, but I’m glad we stuck with Clement C. Moore’s names for Santa’s reindeer.

    Rudolph leads the way

I think we all know the story of Rudolph.

This iconic reindeer showed up in 1939. Looked upon as a misfit (aren’t we all in some way), the other reindeer rejected Rudolph and made fun of him because of his red, glowing nose. Though that “little” abnormality came in handy “one foggy Christmas Eve.”

In an unprecedented weather event, one never seen before or seen since, an “outbreak” of fog blanketed most of the planet, and it became impossible for Santa to make his flight on Christmas Eve around the world.

All was lost until Santa realized that Rudolph and his incredible nose could lead the way.

This was Rudolph’s time to shine. (Pun intended.)

    (File Photo)

And the rest is history. From that time on, Rudolph has been Santa’s lead reindeer.

    Santa’s Christmas Eve forecast

Something you may not know is Santa Claus has a weather forecasting team at the North Pole.

Some elves specialize in forecasting the weather around the world. These meteorologists give Santa an overview of the weather around the globe on Christmas Eve, but Santa depends on local National Weather Service and TV meteorologists to provide him forecasts for cities along his flight path.

My daughter found out about this during a visit with Santa when she was about six years old.

I had taken her and her younger brother to see Santa a few days before Christmas. As we were next in line, Santa saw us, stood up, walked over to me and asked, “Gary, what kind of weather am I looking at on Christmas Eve?”

I gave him a quick forecast, he thanked me, walked back over to his chair and sat down as the next child climbed on his lap.

The expression on my daughter’s face was priceless.

“Santa knows you?” she asked as she looked up at me with a look of shock, confusion and pride. “Well, of course he does. Who do you think he gets his forecast from for this area? I’m a pilot, and he’s a pilot. I’m the perfect person to give him a ‘flight weather briefing.’”

Talk about a priceless memory that I will always remember.

    In the Christmas Eve sky

So on Christmas Eve night, if your skies are clear, look to the sky. You might see a red light moving across the sky. More than likely, it’s the beacon on an airplane, but it might, just might, be the glow of Rudolph’s red nose.

And if the weather is not so clear, rest well knowing that Santa’s got a well-trained team of reindeer pulling the sleigh and an accurate forecast so he can safely complete his Christmas Eve journey around the Earth.

I’ll finish my story with these final words.

My wish for all of you is to have a safe and Merry Christmas. And to Santa and the reindeer, have a good flight!

    Finding Your Passion

    — Apopka, FL —

In the middle of February, Delia Miller shared her journey of finding her passions and purpose. Combining her love of art, concern for the environment, and newfound passion for aviation, she has turned all of this into an inspiring project.

Her journey began with an opportunity to paint a mural in her hometown. Her path took a turn in an airport bathroom where she met a young, Black, female airline captain. The encounter spurred Miller to pursue aviation as a career path.

  • Florida bishops ask for immigration enforcement pause over holidays

    [ad_1]

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Catholic bishops in Florida are asking for a pause on immigration enforcement for the holidays. They sent a letter to President Donald Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis with the request.

    What You Need To Know

    • The Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops made an appeal to the president and governor to pause immigration enforcement during the holidays
    • Eight bishops from around Florida, including St. Petersburg and Orlando, signed the appeal
    • They argue the border is secure and enforcement efforts are now leading to the arrest of immigrants who haven’t committed crimes
    • A White House spokesperson has said President Trump is keeping his promise to deport criminal illegal aliens

“A pause during this holy season can lower the temperature within our partisan divisions, ease the fear and anxiety present in many of our immigrant and even non-immigrant families and allow all of us to celebrate with greater joy the advent of the Prince of Peace,” the appeal reads.

Eight bishops from around Florida, including St. Petersburg’s Gregory Parkes and Orlando’s John Noonan, signed it. It’s a move that’s being praised by religious leaders in St. Petersburg.

“I’m thrilled with what they did,” said Rev. Ben Atherton-Zeman of the Unitarian Universalist Church of St. Petersburg. “I stand side by side with my Catholic brothers and sisters on many issues, and this is one of them.”

But the White House is showing no signs of backing down. A spokesperson told the Associated Press via e-mail, “President Trump was elected based on his promise to the American people to deport criminal illegal aliens. And he’s keeping that promise.”

The letter from the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops argues that enforcement operations are now leading to the arrest of people who aren’t criminals.

“It’s not asking them to reverse their policies, which we hope they would, but we’re just asking them for a pause so that we can get beyond the Christmas holidays without people being paralyzed by fear,” said Archbishop Thomas Wenski of the Archdiocese of Miami.

The DeSantis administration has not yet indicated if they will be changing enforcement protocols during the timeframe requested in the letter.

  • Is your license plate frame illegal? Florida clarifies new plate law

    [ad_1]

TAMPA, Fla. — There’s been a lot of questions recently about Florida’s new license plate law.

    What You Need To Know

    • A Florida law went into effect Oct. 1 and established harsher penalties for anything that obstructs vehicles’ license plates
    • Confusion spread on social media about whether plate frames are legal
    • FLHSMV says the law does not prohibit the use of a license plate frame as long as it does not block the alphanumeric plate identifier or the validation sticker at the top right of the plate
    • FLHSMV does not consider the information on the bottom of the plate to be a primary feature on the plate. The top of the plate can be covered as long as law enforcement is able to identify the state that issued the plate

It went into effect on Oct. 1 and established harsher penalties for anything that obstructs your license plate — including fines or even jail time.

That’s led to many drivers wondering if their license plate frame is legal or not.

That includes Florida resident Belle King — known on social media as Pikabellechu — who has built a large following for her Pikachu collection.

She owns a Volkswagen decked out in the famous Pokémon, which includes a Pikachu license plate frame. When she heard about the law, she removed the frame.

    (Courtesy of Belle King)

“It’s been on my plate for 24 years. One of my fans actually gifted it to me. They were so excited that I put it on the car. It stinks that it’s coming off after all these years. But it is what it is,” King said.

Based on what she was seeing on social media, King removed the frame.

But a Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson said the law isn’t really about the frames.

“This is for vehicles that have an obstruction on their tag,” FHP Lt. Tara Crescenczi said. “Meaning, they have a mechanical switch that can block out the tag completely. Or they can use a switch to make the tag flip up. And really it’s about law enforcement trying to stop dangerous drivers or someone who has committed a crime.”

Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) also put out clarification on the new law.

FLHSMV said the law does not prohibit the use of a license plate frame as long as it does not block the alphanumeric plate identifier or the validation sticker at the top right of the plate.

In addition, FLHSMV does not consider the information on the bottom of the plate to be a primary feature on the plate. The top of the plate can be covered as long as law enforcement is able to identify the state that issued the plate.

Under that clarification, King’s plate should be OK.

“I thought as long as your numbers were showing, or in my case, my words were showing, and then your little registration tag. I was like, ‘OK that’s fine. Mine’s only covering a little bit of the top and the bottom’,” King said.
