  • The Essentials With Rita Hazan: High-Low Skincare, Anguilla and Working With Beyoncé

Even if you don’t know Rita Hazan by name, you know her work. The New York City native has been behind the hair color transformations of some of the biggest pop stars since the late ‘90s, from Mariah Carey’s first foray into lighter locks (and eventual blonde makeover) for her 1997 album, Butterfly, to Jennifer Lopez’s post-Selena honey highlights and Katy Perry’s full range of rainbow colors. And then there’s Beyoncé, who first came to Hazan in 2013 and has been working with her ever since.

But Hazan’s impact in the beauty industry extends far beyond her impressive list of celebrity clients. In the male-dominated field of hair coloring, Hazan carved out her own path: First by developing a coloring technique that defied (and eventually set) trends, then with the opening of her namesake salon and product line. “I didn’t even think about it as a woman; I just really loved doing color,” Hazan tells Observer of what drove her to take risks. After attending beauty school at 17, Hazan immediately went to work at Oribe Canales’ legendary Fifth Avenue salon, where she assisted color director Brad Johns (whose clients famously included Christy Turlington and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy) through much of the ‘90s. “I got promoted, and that’s where I was doing a little bit different hair color. Brad was all about chunky, very golden highlights, and I went the opposite way of that,” Hazan says. “My family background is Egyptian and Jewish, and we like to be blonde, but we don’t like to be goldy,” she adds of what inspired her more seamless approach to blonde color.

By the early 2000s, Hazan’s work with Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez and Jessica Simpson had established her as the go-to colorist for pop It girls and up-and-comers alike. “If you wanted to create an image or change your look, you would come to me,” confirms Hazan. All the while, she was still busy at Oribe with her usual clients, one of whom first planted the idea of opening her own salon. “I was like, ‘Who the hell wants that headache?’” Hazan laughs. “But I told my client I’d think about it, and when I went home and said something to my mom, she said, ‘If you want to, just open your own place.’ So I did, and that was it.”

    Rita Hazan Rita Hazan.

After establishing her Fifth Avenue salon as the place for A-listers and those in the know, Hazan developed her own product line, which most famously introduced the world to the first root cover-up spray (inspired by and developed for her clients as an at-home solution for grays in between color appointments). But after 20 years in the industry, Hazan was introduced to her most famous client to date: Beyoncé. “About 12 years ago, [hair stylist] Kim Kimble called me and was like, ‘Beyoncé wants to be blonde but her hair keeps turning orange, and I told her, Rita is the only person that’s going to get you the color that you want. Can you do her hair?’” Hazan recalls of the singer’s first visit to her salon. Hazan delivered, and the two have been working together ever since. The colorist is behind every Beyoncé hair look of the past decade, from her bright blonde at the 2015 Met Gala to her more dimensional, “sunwashed” color during the 2023 Renaissance tour.

“We’ll go back and forth on color ideas, but I’m always making sure it looks good for video and with movement—Beyoncé is flipping her hair and she’s up and down when she’s onstage, so every aspect of her hair has to look beautiful,” Hazan says of their collaboration process. “She also grew up in a hair salon, so she understands what’s possible and what’s not.”

This fall, Hazan is sharing her coloring expertise through open classes at her salon, now located on the Upper East Side. “I really like educating, and everybody is always asking me about going blonde without it getting damaged or brassy, so I’d like to do classes in the salon that are affordable and open to anybody who wants to come in,” she says. In between creating buttery blonde color for her clients (Hazan’s top trending color for fall), Rita Hazan spoke with Observer about her current essentials—from the red lip that’s become part of her everyday uniform to the at-home hair gloss with results so good, she uses it in the salon.

  • This Key Hair Staple Is a Must for Keeping Your Curls Juicy AF

This Key Hair Staple Is a Must for Keeping Your Curls Juicy AF

According to veteran celebrity hairstylist and Flawless by Gabrielle Union co-founder Larry Sims, deep conditioning offers a more intense treatment than a typical conditioner since its designed to rebuild and strengthen brittle hair that heat, chemicals, or stressors have damaged. This is especially crucial for individuals with curly hair, as its crucial to incorporate deep conditioning into wash day routines to deliver nourishment and preserve the integrity of their curls.

“Like all hair products, deep conditioners are best selected to target the specific needs of your hair type,” Sims begins. “Curly hair types thrive when ultra-moisturizing and protein-rich deep conditioners like the Flawless Repairing Deep Conditioning Masque are used within a wash day regimen.” This particular product stands out to him due to the formula’s combination of biotin, creatine, and rice oil complex that works to repair any existing damage while delivering hydration and the reduction of frizz.

When looking for a deep conditioner that would work best for curly hair patterns keep an eye out for ingredients like argan oil, coconut oil, and shea butter and avoid any containing alcohol or sulfates; as they’ll dry out your strands. Incorporating a deep conditioner in your wash day routine is quick, easy, and effective. “After using your favorite shampoo, apply your deep conditioner to damp hair. Make sure the product is fully saturated on your hair, leaving no curl behind,” says Sims. “Massage the deep conditioner into hair from root to ends using fingers, or consider using a wide-tooth comb or brush to ensure each strand is coated.”

For a quick shower routine, Sims recommends leaving the deep conditioner in the hair for 5 to 10 minutes or, for a more intense process, cover hair with a shower cap and sitting under a hooded dryer for extra saturation and nourishment to the curls. Next, rinse with cool water to seal in moisture before applying the next step in your styling routine.

Below, take a look at our picks for the best deep conditioners on the market based on our testing and thousands of glowing reviews across Sephora, Ulta, Dermstore, and more.

  • Trust Me—These Are the 20 Best Shampoos and Conditioners for Every Curl Type

Trust Me—These Are the 20 Best Shampoos and Conditioners for Every Curl Type

When on the hunt for curl- and coil-friendly shampoo and conditioner, one sentiment should be kept in mind above all else: No one routine will work for everyone. What’s more, products that may have worked for you for months at a time may no longer have their desired effect and lead to you having to switch up your entire routine. It’s best to go into your search for shampoo and conditioner taking note of what your hair needs at the moment, whether that’s a frizz fighter or a moisture quencher.

I also pay attention to the weight and consistency of the formulas I come across, taking the time to consider how certain products impact the look and feel of my strands after use. My 4c curls, for example, are low-porosity, so they benefit the most from shampoos and conditioners that help draw in and retain moisture. My hair also works best with products that are lightweight and possess detangling properties that can save me time in the morning.

Most, if not all, of the shampoo and conditioners included in this product roundup are also sulfate-free, meaning they forgo the popular ingredient so that your hair is not stripped of its nourishing natural oils, and for those of you who have color-treated hair, there’ll be no fading. While I prefer products that are gentle on my curls and tough on my scalp by removing impurities, I’ve also made sure to include a few of my top picks for shampoos and conditioners that deliver deep cleansing and curl definition.

  • How I Turned My Regular Bangs Into Effortless French-Girl Bangs

How I Turned My Regular Bangs Into Effortless French-Girl Bangs

Like many other things we Americans romanticize about the French, I’ve always been in awe of how these ladies seem to keep their fringe bangs looking effortless and fresh. My personal experience with bangs is that they look effortless and fresh for all of 10 minutes, and then they end up stuck to my face, swept to the side mixed in with the rest of my hair, or just generally unruly.

After many, many trials and errors, I came to the conclusion the trick is in the styling itself. It’s not like French women don’t experience the same wind, heat, and humidity that we do, so it must be something they’re doing differently from the start that keeps their hair intact. With this in mind, I reached out to one of L.A.’s top hairstylists Linet K. to find out where I’m going wrong—and how to turn my regular fringe bangs into effortless French-girl bangs.

Linet walked me through a step-by-step tutorial on how to achieve said fringe bangs, so today I’m sharing the same routine with you below—and it’s actually much easier than I imagined. The key is all in the blow-dry technique, and being as uncoordinated as I am, if I can do this, so can you. Promise. Keep scrolling to learn the easiest way to style fringe bangs, plus see the recommended products you’ll need to ensure they stay put all day.

  • Things My Friends Keep Stealing From Me

Things My Friends Keep Stealing From Me

Since I write about products for a living, it’s safe to assume I own a lot of them. After all, I’m a consumer first and a writer second.

I like to find products that make me feel my best, so if enough people are claiming that a certain makeup brush changed their life, I will be trying it. I try to stay ahead of trends and weed out the ones that’ll last. Finding the top influencer rated products that actually work is my hobby.

I’ve been influenced by both brands that are actually worth it like Skims and Beis, and brands that actually aren’t worth it like Drunk Elephant and Tarte. It’s all a part of the process. Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn.

And because I’m under the firm belief that if you love something, buy two of it, you can imagine my room is a shopper’s paradise for my friends. You need perfume, makeup, clothes, bags? Come to me.

This is a long-winded way of saying my friends often steal my stuff. But that means these products are so worth it that they can’t help but take it from me. Here are my most “borrowed” items:

    Dior Forever Luminizer Highlighter

    Dior

This product makes me want to be a better person. The icy white highlight is unmatched – it’s what my friends liken to “snow queen” vibes. It’s perfect for your eyelids or as a highlighter.

The pan is huge, so it’ll last forever and the classic quilted Dior packaging makes it the perfect purse compact.

    Oribe SuperShine Cream

This cream speeds up your blow drying process and even has a pearlescent hue. My hair never feels healthier than when I use it and the shine rivals the sun. If you want the perfect blow out, use the tiniest bit of this cream.

Oribe sells salon-quality hair products, but they can be expensive. The SuperShine Cream is worth every penny and will last a lot longer than your usual leave-in since you need such a small amount.

    Beis Convertible Weekender Bag

I know TikTok has forced Beis down our throats, but it’s for a good reason. Shay Mitchell has single-handedly solved every traveler’s problem. The Convertible Weekender is perfect because the bottom fully unzips so you can keep shoes or dirty clothes in the bottom half.

While you may be scared to get the full-size because of how large they seem in videos, I’ve found that both the larger Work Tote and Weekender bags fit everything I need without being unmanageable.

    Voluspa Tahitian Coconut Vanilla Candle

    Sephora

I love a subtle island smell that isn’t overpowering or nauseating. The Voluspa Coconut Vanilla candle is exclusive to Sephora and smells almost identical to Brazilian Bum Bum Cream. All candles are actually made with coconut wax, so you’re getting a refreshing, non-artificial coconut scent.

I’m addicted to this scent and the Voluspa jars are perfect to reuse and repurpose. I’d take this candle over Diptyque any day.

    Ray Ban 1969

What my friends have dubbed the “Joe Burrows” are their favorite staple to steal. The rectangle frames are reminiscent of the famous Cartier shades, but hundreds of dollars cheaper. The brown frames are also refreshing compared to the classic black, so I was sold.

These are my go-to sunnies for when I’m making a fashion statement. The brown lens doesn’t block the sun as much, so they’re perfect even indoors a la Anna Wintour.

  • 10 Products To Keep In 2023, 10 Products To Leave Behind

10 Products To Keep In 2023, 10 Products To Leave Behind

2022 brought so many product recommendations my bank account wishes I hadn’t seen. My entire TikTok FYP is filled with makeup routines and the next hottest product. Everyone tells me I need to have this product, so I tell my bank I need to have that product.

I want to feel as confident as a supermodel even if I don’t have the throngs of makeup artists and hair stylists they do. If they’re plugging a product, I’m probably going to try it. But, in the age of the everyday influencer, it’s getting harder to tell what’s a paid advertisement and what’s not.

@thehennaali Save your money 💸 Makeup I will not be buying again! #makeup#makeuprecommendations#makeuphaul2022#makeupreview#ratingmakeup#beautyproducts#antihaul#rembeauty♬ original sound – sophia

That’s right – some videos don’t tell you if it’s a paid promotion when it’s really an ad. Brands are sending free products to TikTok’s finest in exchange for rave reviews – even if the product doesn’t deserve it.

@scortezzbeauty The all time BEST products of 2022 #top5#recommendations#makeup♬ original sound – Scortezz Beauty

Take Bobbi Brown’s clean beauty line, Jones Road, for example. It was hyped up to be the “no-makeup makeup” holy grail until products started rolling out. The foundation ended up leaking oil and separating from the foundation which is a pretty bad sign even if it can be mixed. Several users reported that it separated even while on their faces. It was an overall disaster.

Since the year’s almost over, I’m rounding up all of the viral products I purchased and giving you the low down. The good, the bad, and the downright ugly. We are leaving no stone unturned.

Here are 10 things to keep this 2023, and 10 to leave in 2022:

    The Viral Products That Work…

    1. Paula’s Choice Liquid Exfoliant This BHA/AHA treatment does literally everything. It clears stubborn blackheads and exfoliates all the dead skin cells that clog pores, crack makeup, and give you acne. It’s glass skin in a bottle and if I could take one thing to a deserted island it would be this.
    2. Hero Cosmetics Mighty Surface PatchesYou know about pimple patches, but these surface patches cover way more ground so you can tackle problem areas, not just pimples. I wear these a few nights a week when breaking out and I’m clear by the weekend.
    3. La Roche Posay Cicaplast Balm If there’s anything I hate, it’s dry skin. I tried a retinol that caused my face to shed, and this miracle balm moisturizer healed my skin overnight while locking in my skincare perfectly.
    4. Makeup By Mario Skin EnhancerI’m a Makeup by Mario stan. High quality products that don’t break the bank? Yes please. This is a bronzer used often on Kim K (and me). It blends easier than a normal contour while snatching my cheekbones.
    5. Oribe Supershine CreamOribe can be a bit pricey, but for 10 ounces of incredible product, this is a steal. My hair looks glossy and fresh out of the salon when I use this.
    6. Dior Backstage FoundationIt’s your skin, but better. Dior created a lightweight, glowy foundation that covers redness without caking. At $40, it’s high end without hurting the wallet.
    7. ONE/SIZE On Til Dawn Setting Spray – If you’re tired of your makeup sliding off by the end of the night, this setting spray will do the trick. It mattifies your makeup and makes it completely waterproof.
    8. Olaplex Set I heavily damaged my hair when I bleached it, but consistent usage of the Olaplex line saved my life. It restores the protein in your dry, damaged hair to fully heal it to the cuticle. Keep up with the products and you’ll see results after a few months.
    9. Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Liner and Lipstick Charlotte Tilbury took off during the pandemic, but the Pillow Talk line will forever remain my fave. Charlotte herself always says the Pillow Talks are everyone’s perfect lip shade, and she’s not wrong.
    10. Rhode Lip Treatment I didn’t want to love another celebrity product, but this one is worth all the money in my account. It hydrates your lips with peptides and cupuacu while also functioning as a gloss.

…And The Viral Products That Don’t

      1. Haus Labs – Every. single. review. told me that Lady Gaga’s brand would change the way I viewed makeup. So when I ordered the foundation and it dried out on my face and cracked immediately, I was heartbroken. When my roommate got the lip oil and was even underwhelmed, I knew that was enough to leave it.
      2. The Good Patch – Any wellness patch in general, really. The hangover cures never work, and I never feel any calmer when I wear the relaxation ones. It’s a placebo effect waiting in the impulse-buy section – avoid!
      3. Glamnetics Press On Nails – The at home manicure is trending, but these popped off after 12 hours of being on my nails. I don’t want to continuously glue my nails on, so these are a pass.
      4. Charlotte Tilbury Mini Magic Cream – I’ve already voiced my opinions on CT’s mini products being highway robbery. The mini Magic Cream is the size of my pinky, for far, far too much money.
      5. Self Tan Water – I’m sorry, but this is just not for me. I can’t see where the tanner is going on my body, so I end up half-tanned and look ridiculous. I’m sticking with a tinted tanner.
      6. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze – The laminated brow trend is fun, but expensive eyebrow products just aren’t it. I’ve been disappointed by every eyebrow product over $12.
      7. Mario Badescu – I loved the Drying Lotion back in the day when I had a pimple, but it flakes off so quickly and just doesn’t do what a pimple patch can. Most of Mario Badescu’s products are underwhelming for me, so I’m leaving them behind.
      8. Expensive Mascaras – Much like eyebrow products, expensive mascaras have never been worth it to me. I’ll take L’Oreal Telescopic and Maybelline Sky High over a $30 tube.
      9. Benefit Benetint – Not nearly pigmented enough for my blush preferences. I understand wanting the natural look, but this won’t give me much of anything.
      10. Drunk Elephant – While I’m sure their products are great, at this price range there are more reputable skincare brands. I like to keep my skincare affordable, so this is staying in 2022.
