REDWOOD CITY – A Redwood City man was arrested Wednesday on multiple felony charges after he allegedly discharged a firearm during New Year’s celebrations.
According to police, the suspect discharged his weapon “numerous times” outside an apartment building on Stambaugh Street shortly after midnight on Jan. 1. Officers who were called to the scene recovered spent and unspent .45 caliber and 9mm ammunition, but were not able to identify any suspects.
“During the New Year’s holidays, the discharging of firearms is all too common and normally difficult, if not impossible to identify perpetrators. These random and negligent acts are particularly dangerous to the community, as there are typically large numbers of community members out celebrating, just as in this case,” police said in a statement Thursday.
According to investigators, multiple people, including children, were in the area at the time the suspect was shooting.
Following months of investigation, police were able to identify a suspect. On Wednesday evening, officers served a warrant at the suspect’s home in Redwood City.
During the search, police said they located a .45 caliber handgun and .45 caliber and 9mm ammunition. A records check determined the firearm did not belong to him or anyone he knew.
The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Juan Jose VeraGaleana, was arrested and booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility, police said. He is accused of unlawful discharge of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm in public and possession of a fake ID.
According to court records, VeraGalena was arraigned on Thursday. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for July 3.

In New York City, the ball dropped at midnight in Times Square. In Sydney, Australia, more than 1 million people saw fireworks light up the night sky over the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Here’s a look at how people around the world brought in the new year.

In the winter of 1996, the Counting Crows’ lead singer Adam Duritz composed the lyrics for a song that would be called “A Long December,” eventually released on Britney Spears’ birthday (three short years before the world would know who Spears was), December 2nd. Leaving the entire month to let listeners either take the song as a call to suicide based on its sound, or as an urging to have hope for the new year based on the lyrics themselves. The ones that naively assure, “It’s been a long December and there’s reason to believe/Maybe this year will be better than the last.”
Such a foolish statement to make, of course. Especially for anyone who’s lived more than a decade on this planet. But, as it is said, “Hope dies last” (thus, 28 Days Later proves humans keep going even when they should very clearly commit suicide). They say it’s the greatest testament to human strength and fortitude, but sometimes one can’t help but think it’s the greatest testament to human stupidity…and willful selfishness. The fact that, year after year, the worse the world gets, the more people become invested in the idea of their own personal well-being and “growth.” As though “turning inward” and becoming increasingly blind to the collective injustices wrought upon humanity is the best and only way to cope. Maybe it is.
In 1996, the Year of Our “A Long December,” things were still, objectively speaking, slightly more “hunky-dory” than they are now. At least, one has to admit, climate change-wise. Hence, 2023’s transition into 2024 marking headlines like, “World will look back at 2023 as year humanity exposed its inability to tackle climate crisis, scientists say.” But since when has anyone ever listened to scientists (as 2020’s pandemic very clearly demarcated)? Not until it’s too late and the forewarning guidance is effectively rendered useless. Even on the U.S. political front, things were undeniably, let’s say “more manageable.” Not only was it pre-Clinton sex scandal, it was pre-existence-of-Trump-as-a-presidential-thought. With the advent of 2024, and the unfathomable reality that Trump somehow has yet another viable shot at the presidency despite being impeached twice, well, that should be enough to indicate, without a shadow of doubt, to even the most Pollyanna-esque of optimists that things don’t really get better with a new year. The more time wears on, in fact, the more it all has the potential to go horribly awry rather than become increasingly “repaired.” Perhaps that’s why when Duritz sing-speaks, “Maybe this year will be better than the last,” it sounds rather half-hearted and unconvincing.
Written in response to a friend being run over by a car and getting badly injured, Duritz’s intent was to reflect on the pain of the past, while also looking forward to the “promise” of the future (even if, the older you get, the more society renders you invisible). At that time, it was Duritz’s glamorous present he might have chosen to reflect on, which, one supposes, he kind of did by including Courteney Cox in the video, directed by Lawrence Carroll. Indeed, it was after appearing in the video that the two started dating…this also being not long after Duritz already dabbled with another “Friend’s” vagina: Jennifer Aniston. So yes, his 90s present offered plenty to feel positive about. So did a lot of people’s 90s present, in fact. It seemed as though a general hopefulness had washed over most of the decade, in spite of it heralding the twenty-four-hour “tabloid news” cycle that would create a new breed of desensitization in the twenty-first century.
But before that aspect of political fear-mongering and overexposed celebrity culture became so absurd, Duritz was able to feature Cox in his video with little fanfare (or not as much as there would have been in a post-TMZ world). With the segments divvied up to give both parties essentially the same amount of screen time, Cox is mostly shown in a dark, uber-depressing room that smacks of a prison cell as she sits on a bench next to a table and holds crumpled-up notes in her hand. The video also features a bevy of dates, including August 6th (incidentally, the same day that Hiroshima was bombed), indicating the temporal progress of the year, ergo the forceful and fierce passage of time that eventually portends all of our demises. This much is evoked via the scenes of Duritz and Cox featured throughout the video that soon become nothing more than Polaroid snapshots—the moments of their lives reduced to mere “recorded memories” (so it is that Duritz notes, “I can’t remember all the times I tried to tell my myself/To hold on to these moments as they pass”). The snow falling ambiently for most of the video also emphasizes the point of winter, the ultimate symbolism of “the end” of something. Whether an actual life, or the signal of a new beginning. However mundane or inauspicious it might be.
Cox’s “character” in the video gradually grapples with that reality. Slowly coming to accept Duritz’s (and most people grasping at straws for some sliver of hope) philosophy that “life is what you make of it”—or some shit. No matter how ugly it all might get. The important thing, they insist, is to maintain a positive outlook (e.g., “It’s been so long since I’ve seen the ocean/I guess I should”). Yet even Duritz, for as optimistic as he tries to remain throughout this melancholic-sounding song, lets a more than faint trace of “cynicism” trickle in with the line, “And the feeling that it’s all a lot of oysters, but no pearls.” Perhaps the only truly honest observation Duritz makes throughout the still beloved “New Year’s single.”
Which is why it’s so fleeting—barely detectable in the song for the undiscerning ear. Instead, all anyone can really hear is the hopeful tinge of, “It’s been a long December and there’s reason to believe/Maybe this year will be better than the last.” Even though, as any pragmatist knows, the lyrics, of course, should go, “It’s been a long December and there’s absolutely no reason to believe/That this year could possibly be better than the last.” The laws of devolution simply can’t make it so. And oh, how the devolution keeps progressing.

The first New Year’s-themed movie premiered in 2008 and it wasn’t until nearly 10 years later that viewers got another film focused on the December 31 or January 1 event. 2017’s Royal New Year’s Eve centers around a prince and his unlikely princess falling in love on the special night.
“I love fairy tales, I found them beautiful [growing up]. I love the suspense and I love smiling and crying at all the right moments,” Royal New Year’s Eve star Jessy Schram said during a behind-the-scenes interview in December 2017. “It’s fun to get to play the twinkle in someone else’s eyes.”
There are a few elements that Hallmark Channel viewers can count on when they snuggle in to watch a holiday film — and the actors and actresses have come to expect the classic moments too. While celebrating 2022’s Countdown to Christmas launch at Radio City Music Hall in New York City last month, Us Weekly […]
The following year, Adelaide Kane made her Hallmark debut in A Midnight Kiss, which focuses on the planning of an epic New Year’s Eve party.

We’re less than 48 hours away from 2024, and everyone is gearing up to celebrate New Year’s Eve. While it’s one of the biggest party nights of the year, I prefer a cozy indoor NYE to a packed bar or crowded city square. And I’m not alone: New Year’s Eve is amateur hour, a sloppy drunk mess that is a total blast in your youth but serves diminishing returns as you age. And if you have little kids, your energy has likely been sapped by the sugary highs and lows of the holiday season, as well as trying to figure out how to entertain your children while they’re out of school.
So if your idea of a rockin’ NYE is curling up on the couch in cozy jammies, watching your favorite NYE film, and enjoying a bottle of Martinelli’s sparkling cider, you’ll likely be tuning in to watch the ball drop. But what New Year’s Eve special should you watch? Unfortunately, Miley Cyrus won’t be returning to host NYE on NBC. The singer crushed it last year with co-host/godmother Dolly Parton and a variety of special guests, but NBC will be airing Sunday Night Football instead (snooze!). Let’s take a look at our options for ringing in 2024:
Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2024
If you’re old enough to remember who Dick Clark is, this special is probably for you (also don’t forget to stretch and take your antacid!) Ryan Seacrest returns to host ABC’s annual coverage live in Times Square, alongside co-host Rita Ora. They will be tagging in remote co-hosts Jeannie Mai in Los Angeles and Dayanara Torres in Puerto Rico. This is the Cadillac of NYE shows, with big names, big performances, and international coverage.
Performers:Megan Thee Stallion, Jelly Roll, Sabrina Carpenter, and Tyla hit the stage in New York. Los Angeles performers will be Aqua, Bebe Rexha, Coco Jones, Doechii, Ellie Goulding, Green Day, Janelle Monae, Loud Luxury, Ludacris, Nile Rodgers and Chic, Paul Russell, Renee Rapp, Thirty Seconds to Mars, and Two Friends. The show includes a live performance from Post Malone in Las Vegas, Ivy Queen in Puerto Rico, and Newjeans in South Korea.
Okay, where do I watch it? The broadcast starts at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
New Year’s Eve Live With Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen
CNN gets in on the NYE fun by getting Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen super-drunk and letting them riff. While I still prefer the O.G. Anderson Cooper/Kathy Griffin team-up, I do enjoy the chaotic gay energy of the Andys, which gets more unhinged as the evening goes on. CNN reporters will also be tagging in from across the globe for a nice look at international celebrations.
Performers: Enrique Iglesias, Maroon 5, the Jonas Brothers, Flo Rida, Miranda Lambert, Darius Rucker, and Rod Stewart. You can also expect appearances from Patti LaBelle, Jeremy Renner, Neil Patrick Harris, David Blaine, Bowen Yang, and Matt Rogers.
Okay, where do I watch it?8 p.m. ET on CNN. You can also stream the special on CNN Max and CNN.com for TV subscribers.
Cynthia Erivo & Friends: A New Year’s Eve Celebration
If you’re a Broadway fan, then this is the NYE special for you. Wicked star and Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo hosts this live show from the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Erivo will be joined by fellow Broadway stars and Tony Award winners Ben Platt and Joaquina Kalukango for the event.
Okay, where do I watch it? 8 p.m. ET on PBS. The show will also be streaming on PBS.org and via the PBS app.
Country music fans will want to tune in for CBS’s annual offering of the best in country music live from Nashville. The show is hosted by hosted by Cody Alan along with CBS anchor Lonnie Quinn, who will join Dustin Lynch for a performance in Times Square.
Performers: Trace Adkins, Grace Bowers, Kane Brown, Jackson Dean, Hardy, Cody Johnson, Elle King, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Parker McCollum, Megan Moroney, Old Dominion, Brothers Osborne, Jon Pardi, Carly Pearce, Thomas Rhett, Blake Shelton, Trombone Shorty, Morgan Wallen, Lainey Wilson, and Bailey Zimmerman.
Okay, where do I watch it? 7:30 p.m. ET on CBS. You can also watch it live and on-demand if you’re a Paramount+ with Showtime subscriber.
What are your NYE plans? Let us know in the comments!
