     NYJW welcomes the new year with exciting winter class offerings for jazz enthusiasts of all skill levels. These ensemble-based classes, guided by world-renowned instructors, provide a dynamic and nurturing environment for musical development. Whether you’re starting your jazz journey or looking to enhance your skills, NYJW has a workshop tailored to your needs.

    The winter session includes regular live concert showcases at well-known jazz venues throughout the city, offering students a platform to demonstrate their skills and growth.

    NYJW’s curriculum extends beyond group workshops to include specialized courses in areas like Music Theory, Ear Training, Composition, and Counterpoint. Additionally, the workshop offers Private Lessons customized to the individual goals and interests of each student. NYJW’s  faculty, comprised of acclaimed jazz professionals, ensures an enriching and insightful educational experience, regardless of the instrument—piano, guitar, vocals, bass, drums, woodwinds, or brass.

    This year, NYJW continues its global musical exploration with trips to exotic locations. Alongside the annual two-week excursions to Italy for both Instrumentalists and Vocalists, NYJW is excited to announce a new destination: Salvador de Bahia in Brazil. These trips cater to both musicians and non-musicians, offering a diverse array of activities.

    NYJW is also expanding its offerings with innovative teambuilding programs for corporations. These initiatives demonstrate how musical concepts like leadership and creativity are vital in a corporate setting.     July 22-August 30 at the New York Jazz Workshop

    Located in the heart of Manhattan, NYJW is one of New York’s premier educational institutions, providing courses in improvisation, harmony, rhythm, individual instruments, and composition. Under the direction of some truly world-class faculty, the 12th Summer Jazz Music Workshop series will help all types of musicians refine their craft!

    The jazz music workshop series kicks off on July 22 with the Saxophone Masterclass led by NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman (sideman to Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, and many more jazz luminaries!). With over 500 recordings to his name and five decades of experience, Dave Liebman is a true wealth of knowledge. Pick up your horn and learn from the master!

    Marc Mommaas, the co-founder of the school will be conducting the second summer intensive, Jazz Improvisation on July 23-26, where musicians will sharpen their toolboxes and broaden their musical vocabulary along with drummer Tony Moreno and pianist Frank Kimbrough. Topics in this intensive include ear training, rhythm, composition, and more.

    For Brazilian music lovers and practitioners, July 27-29 brings the Brazilian Music Intensive with pianist Vitor Goncalves and percussionist Vanderlei Pereira. During this intensive students will perform the music of Jobim, Pascoal, Pixinguinha, and more in addition to learning about rhythms like choro, bossa nova, baiao, samba, maracatu, and the xote.

    July 30-August 2 is the 4-day Jazz Guitar Intensive with guitarists Kenny Wessel and Dave Stryker covering topics such as chord voicing, improvisation, and modal chord positions.

    Round out this week of guitar August 3-4 in the Country/Jazz/Blues Guitar Intensive! Led by Nate Radley, this program focuses on the three styles that emerged in the early part of the 20th century together, and have been influencing each other ever since.

    The Bebop to Hardbop Intensive on August 6-9 with Mark Sherman and daily special guests will expand students’ jazz vocabulary and open up new possibilities for improvisation. Topics include rhythm, form, improvisation, ear-training, and more.

    August 10-12 is the Piano and Keyboard Intensive led by the world-class combo of pianists Amina Figarova, Frank Kimbrough and Jacob Sacks. Such topics will include reading, ear training, technique, solo piano, duo, and sound.

    August boasts some incredible programs for singers of all levels. Olivia Foschi leads the Beginner’s Vocal Intensive from August 13-16 along with guest artist Loire Cotler. Topics include anatomy overview, breathing exercises, singing the major scale and melodies. August 17-19 features an Intermediate/Advanced Vocal intensive with Jocelyn Medina and guest Vitor Goncalves. Participants will learn about technique for basic repertoire, and are given vocal exercises and techniques based on their needs. August 20-23 brings forth another Vocal Intensive for Intermediate/Advanced students with vocalist Michelle Walker. Students will learn about such topics as improvisation, swing/time feel, breath and functional harmony.

    Saxophonist Darius Jones and drummer Vito Lesczak lead the second Jazz Improvisation Intensive from August 24-27. The intensive covers many compositional styles plus ideas on melody, harmony and rhythm.

    To close, the Jazz Composition for Beginners Intensive will be led by Marc Mommaas and special guest trombonist Doug Beavers on August 29-30. The intensive will also answer questions on how to avoid compositional ruts, and cover topics such as form, melodic considerations and melodic rhythm.

    The Jazz Improvisation workshop in Italy combines a week of rigorous jazz studies with an exploration of the foods, wines, and sights that Italy has to offer. The workshop is perfect for instrumentalists and vocalists with different backgrounds who want to learn and become better musicians. You won’t want to miss out on this spectacular 6-day/7-night immersion in Jazz improvisation held in a supportive and focused atmosphere conducive to intensive study and mutual encouragement through individual and group instruction, ensemble-playing, jam sessions, and a faculty/student concert.

    The program will be under the guidance of four stellar musicians and educators from NYC: Marc Mommaas (Tenor Sax/Composition: Co-founder NYJW and HJW, educator at The New School), Kenny Wessel (Guitar/Composition: Long Island University and CCNY, US Jazz Ambassador and long-time member of Ornette Coleman’s groundbreaking ensemble, Prime Time), Jeroen Vierdag (Dutch bassist of international fame), and the amazing Fay Victor (Brooklyn, NY-based singer and sound artist/composer with a unique vision for the vocalist’s role in jazz and improvised music).

    We will be hosted in the “Agriturismo La Pineta” a working Farm/Vineyard located in the heart of Tuscany, owned by the family of New York Jazz Workshop co-founder Marco Chelo. Bring your family, bring your friends, because there is plenty to do for the guests while the musicians are in session. La Pineta offers double and single-occupancy rooms, 10 acres of green, a saltwater swimming pool nested between the vineyards and an ancient olive grove. 

    A few of the trip highlights include:

    -Morning and afternoon music sessions (private lessons, masterclasses, and ensembles)

    -Evening jam sessions

    -A final concert

    -Opportunities for excursions to Firenze, Pisa, Lucca, Pistoia, Montecatini Terme, Volterra, San Gimignano, Certaldo, Siena, Empoli, Livorno, Viareggio, and Vinci (the birthplace of Leonardo)

    -Biological wine-tastings

    -A trip to Roman Spa baths

    -Home-cooked food prepared daily by the “La Pineta” chef

    A total of 20 students (not including guests) will be accepted to the workshop so we encourage you not to wait too long with your reservation. Our personalized learning approach focuses on strengthening the participants’ learning process. Strengths are solidified and weaknesses are addressed in a positive and constructive fashion. After these six days, participants will walk away with a wealth of knowledge, tailored goals to bring home with them, and added experience in how to communicate on the bandstand. Plus, it will be a lot of FUN!

    *The program is for adults only and a playing sample needs to be submitted with your registration.

    Prices start at $980 and include all workshop instruction and daily lunch.
