Press Release

The Jazz Improvisation workshop in Italy combines a week of rigorous jazz studies with an exploration of the foods, wines, and sights that Italy has to offer. The workshop is perfect for instrumentalists and vocalists with different backgrounds who want to learn and become better musicians. You won’t want to miss out on this spectacular 6-day/7-night immersion in Jazz improvisation held in a supportive and focused atmosphere conducive to intensive study and mutual encouragement through individual and group instruction, ensemble-playing, jam sessions, and a faculty/student concert.

The program will be under the guidance of four stellar musicians and educators from NYC: Marc Mommaas (Tenor Sax/Composition: Co-founder NYJW and HJW, educator at The New School), Kenny Wessel (Guitar/Composition: Long Island University and CCNY, US Jazz Ambassador and long-time member of Ornette Coleman’s groundbreaking ensemble, Prime Time), Jeroen Vierdag (Dutch bassist of international fame), and the amazing Fay Victor (Brooklyn, NY-based singer and sound artist/composer with a unique vision for the vocalist’s role in jazz and improvised music).

We will be hosted in the “Agriturismo La Pineta” a working Farm/Vineyard located in the heart of Tuscany, owned by the family of New York Jazz Workshop co-founder Marco Chelo. Bring your family, bring your friends, because there is plenty to do for the guests while the musicians are in session. La Pineta offers double and single-occupancy rooms, 10 acres of green, a saltwater swimming pool nested between the vineyards and an ancient olive grove.

A few of the trip highlights include:

-Morning and afternoon music sessions (private lessons, masterclasses, and ensembles)

-Evening jam sessions

-A final concert

-Opportunities for excursions to Firenze, Pisa, Lucca, Pistoia, Montecatini Terme, Volterra, San Gimignano, Certaldo, Siena, Empoli, Livorno, Viareggio, and Vinci (the birthplace of Leonardo)

-Biological wine-tastings

-A trip to Roman Spa baths

-Home-cooked food prepared daily by the “La Pineta” chef

A total of 20 students (not including guests) will be accepted to the workshop so we encourage you not to wait too long with your reservation. Our personalized learning approach focuses on strengthening the participants’ learning process. Strengths are solidified and weaknesses are addressed in a positive and constructive fashion. After these six days, participants will walk away with a wealth of knowledge, tailored goals to bring home with them, and added experience in how to communicate on the bandstand. Plus, it will be a lot of FUN!

*The program is for adults only and a playing sample needs to be submitted with your registration.

Prices start at $980 and include all workshop instruction and daily lunch. Flights and lodging are not included in the price of tuition, but NYJW does have rooms reserved at La Pineta, as well as nearby accommodations, which can be booked during registration.
